— Gabriel Malor CBS says a "rough schedule" for tomorrow's House activities looks like this:
2 p.m.: The House will debate for one hour the rules of debate for the reconciliation bill and the Senate bill.3 p.m.: The House will vote to end debate and vote on the rules of the debate.
3:15 p.m.: The House will debate the reconciliation package for two hours.
5:15 p.m.: The House will vote on the reconciliation package.
5:30 p.m.: The House will debate for 15 minutes on a Republican substitute and then vote on the substitute.
6 p.m.: The House will vote on the final reconciliation package.
6:15 p.m.: If the reconciliation bill passes, the House will immediately vote on the Senate bill, without debate.
All times Eastern.
[DrewM.] Added: There's rumors that Nye of VA announced he was a yes. As of 9:15 eastern Roll Call says that's not true. No guarantee that it won't change shortly but there you have it.
10:15pm- Nye is a no. Again, it's not clear if these are passes from Nancy or a sign she's in trouble.
Update [Gabe]: 11:00pm -- The Rules Committee has clarified that the vote for the Senate bill has to come before the vote on the reconciliation bill. Just to get the order right.

If the House passes the bill unamended, it goes straight to Obama.
however
If they add amendments, the Senate if forced to reconcile the bill.

No, it isn't legal. It doesn't become legal upon House passage - only upon the bill becoming law with the President's signature (or non-veto).
Is the reconciliation package the Senate bill plus amendments? If so, then what happens if the reconciliation package passes but the non-amended Senate bill fails?
Posted by: Ghost of Lee Atwater at March 20, 2010 07:54 PM (zLhuq)
The Senate bill is not amended per se by the reconciliation bill. Which means that if the House passes the Senate bill, the Senate and the President are completely free to ignore the reconciliation bill and declare the unamended Senate bill the law of the land. And that prospect is what House Democrats have to focus on: if the only way a House Dem can live with the Senate bill is if the changes in the reconciliation bill are enacted, then there's no way that Member can vote for the bill... unless they're delusional, stupid, or lying to themselves about what they can live with.

The deem & pass gimmick they wanted to do earlier would have them deem the original Senate bill passed without a vote and send the reconciliation package on to the Senate.
Tomorrow, the only vote that matters is the original Senate bill vote.
That's my take on it.

exactly right stuiec! and the Senate won't have time to f*ck with the House "amendments" "fixes" or whatever you want to call them because they are so behind in their work. they really are.
so the House members think they can blame the SEnate? fine. let's get rid of all the Dem Senators, too. hey, sounds good to me.

So, when Orrin Hatch was sounding off yesterday, it was about the amendments? ObamaCare will become law if they vote on the Senate bill, but the Senate can throw out whatever aspects they so choose?

As soon as they pass the senate bill Obama can sign it. The amendments have to go to the senate and they have to either pass them or go to conference to change them into something the senate can vote for and then the house has to revote the changes.
The house members are taking a HUGE chance. The senate is not going to approve/pass the changes in the amendments. They might accept a few to keep the house happy but they don't have to and they have to have 60 votes not 51 to do it.
Essentially if the house likes the senate bill they should pass it but if they think that the senate is going to approve of their changes they are CRAZY. They aren't going to get shit.
What has happened here is that the senate wouldn't/couldn't pass the house bill so Obama MADE the house pass the senate bill that they hated by making deadlines and bribes and threats. They won't ever get the bribes because they have to go through the appropriations committee in the senate. The only thing they will get is the promised punishment if they embarass the ONE.

Now, how many overall Dem votes will be determined by what happens with their individual amendments?
Posted by: Miss'80sBaby at March 20, 2010 04:10 PM (J46Fi)
vic, i thought the Byrd rule applied to reconciliation stuff that had passed one house & was going over to the other house to be "reconciled". so far, the House hasn't passed anything to be reconciled. once they pass those amendments tomorrow, those will go over to the SEnate & that is where "reconciliation" & the Byrd rule come into play.
but i'm not sure. you know, we're learning alot of stuff.

Now, if they decide to use reconciliation in the senate to pass the house changes they only need 51 votes BUT they have to be fiscal, deficit reducing, and applicable. If not then they have to go through the normal senate process and are subjectible to the filibuster.
Hatch was saying that the senate isn't going to pass their shit. The Oklahoma senator said that if they try to put bribes through then the senate will cut them out with a scaple.
The House is just passing the senate bill with no benefits to themselves. They are going to OWN the cornhusker kickback, the Louisana Purchase, etc etc just as much as the senate.

Then the House will be stuck with the Senate bill. This is probably why a lot are still no's.

That's a point worth mentioning. Some Dems got passes, and others had to die. But IF this bill passes, nobody is safe. Nancy Pelosi might think only a dominatrix could take her place (that's her dog in this fight - she will be out of office altogether, if her constituents think she's incompetent, just like Obama has put his presidency on the line), but Scott Brown won Ted Kennedy's seat. Every Democrat is vulnerable, IF this passes. While only the marxists will lose their jobs, if enough Democrats vote no. As to the sleepers, they will be outed eventually. The Dems will keep pushing more unpopular legislation.

Once the house passes the senate bill the senate has no reason to use reconciliation---it doesn't benefit them in any way. They will probably just hose over the house.

Jebus, now that we know about Hillbuzz's disgruntled dems, we know how they operate:
LetÂ’s use Louise Slaughter as a case study, and see how well we can investigate who her main political funding sources are.
All of this information is publicly available, but it does not turn up automatically in casual searches. So, the people funding the Left can indeed be identified, but it takes legwork and determination the regular person doesn’t usually possess. ALL of this data can be found — for FREE — just using your computer if you are inclined to spend the time looking for it.
These boyz are out for blood and they know how to play.

Besides not having time to deal with it, the Senate won't have any motivation to deal with it either. They'll have their health care bill, the one they themselves passed, so why bother amending it? (Yeah, yeah, they'll have those embarrassing Cornhusker Kickback and Louisiana Purchase and Gator-Aid deals to explain away, but those would be the only things they'd consider changing -- and those aren't worth the effort.)
And the cool thing is that every single Democrat incumbent in the Senate has his or her fingerprints all over this -- they ALL voted for those embarrassing special deals and weird taxes and the health care purchase mandate.

WhatÂ’s Next
The House first needs to pass the Senate bill and the reconciliation changes. The Senate bill would become law as soon as Obama signs it. The Senate would have to pass the reconciliation bill as well before it can become law.
Republicans are vowing to use every procedural tactic they can to block the reconciliation bill and they may challenge its provisions. If the Senate parliamentarian rules with Republicans on a challenge, Democrats might have to vote on a changed bill, which would kick it back to the House again.
The No. 2 Senate Democrat, Dick Durbin of Illinois, yesterday said the Senate aims to finish its work by March 26. ThatÂ’s the day lawmakers are scheduled to leave for a two-week recess.
Posted by: stuiec at March 20, 2010 04:24 PM (W+GYq)
So there's two possibilities here:
1. The average member of the "Deemocratic" party caucus actually thinks you can amend a law that hasn't become a law yet; OR
2. The average member of the Deemocratic party caucus thinks that by voting against certain positions (the Cornhusker kickback and all associates/related bribes, as well as the overall crappy bill itself) before they vote for them will somehow innoculate themselves. Hey maybe they can say something like "well, I actually voted against that provision before I voted for it". That kind of justification couldn't possibly blow up in their face, right?

By doing exactly NOTHING. If Pelosi wins tomorrow, she sends two bills out of the House: the unamended Senate bill from Christmas to President Obama, and the reconciliation bill to the Senate. If the Senate simply tosses the reconciliation bill in the trash, Obama is still free to sign the Senate health care bill into law. Given that all 59 incumbent Democrats voted for it just last December, do you think they will be at all upset about getting that exact same bill signed into law?
The amazing thing is that Pelosi is letting herself be completely rolled by the Senate, but no so amazing when you consider that she's desperate for any first step toward socialized medicine.

The problem I see her procedurally is that I don't understand how they think they can amend a bill. You can amend a law (that's why we have constitutional amendments, the consitutional is a law or laws--amend means to fix by adding). You can't amend a bill because it isn't a law until it is passed and signed.
To do this properly, they should pass the senate bill, let dickhead sign it, then pass amendments and send them to the senate.
I'm really surprised that these congressmen (except for some like McKinney and that impeached judge) think that they can pass shit that the senate is going to pay any attention to.
Senators look at congressmen like horses look at goats.

This bill is a disaster for dems politically and for Americans economically. As soon as the bill is signed insurance companies have to insure people with pre existing conditions. That was supposed to be offset for companies from all the new insureds they will get.
Problem is that the additional people being insured won't happen until 2014. All of our insurance will skyrocket as soon as it is signed.
One way to play it though may be to cancel your insurance and buy it back if you get sick because the mandates don't kick in until 2014 either.
Either way it's going to be Kaos.

ItÂ’s Not a Health Bill [Alan Reynolds]
The “reconciliation bill” is not a health bill but an anti-health
bill. It relies heavily on price controls, taxes, and fines to punish
doctors, hospitals, and innovative companies that produce prescription
drugs and medical devices. If we treated farmers, food companies, and
grocery stores the way Congress threatens to treat the health
industries, would anybody expect food to become better or cheaper?
Furthermore,
the 3.8 percent tax on both labor and investment income is not a
“Medicare tax”: It’s a surtax on income that goes into the slush fund,
not the Medicare trust.
And the bill could not possibly cost “only” $940 billion, unless it contained a sunset provision repealing the law after 2019.
In
fact, new spending is negligible for four years. At that point the
government would start luring 16 million more people into MedicaidÂ’s
leaky gravy train, and start handing out subsidies to families earning
up to $88,000. Spending then jumps from $54 billion in 2014 to $216
billion in 2019. ThatÂ’s just the beginning.
To be unduly
optimistic (more so than the CBO), assume that the new entitlement
schemes increased by only 7 percent a year. At that rate spending would
double every ten years — to $432 billion a year in 2029, $864 billion a year in 2039, and more than $1.72 trillion in 2049.
Can
anyone imagine that the new taxes and fines could possibly grow by 7
percent a year? On the contrary, most of the claimed revenues are
either a timing fraud (treating $70 billion for long-term-care premiums
as newly found treasure) or self-defeating. The hypothetical tax on
Cadillac plans (suspiciously postponed until 201
, for example, is
designed to discourage employers from offering such plans and employees
from wanting them — that is, it’s designed to yield less and less over
time.
Moreover, the accumulating penalties on reporting joint
incomes above $250,000 — a 39.6 percent tax, a 3.8 percent income
surtax, a 0.9 percent Medicare surtax, and rapid phasing-out of
deductions and exemptions — would greatly discourage any activity that
would push income above $250,000. Most obviously, no sensible family
whose income is normally below that pain threshold would be so foolish
as to sell enough assets to let capital gains push them over the line.
If
even half of the punitive tax plans are enacted, I plan to launch a
“249 Club” whose members pledge never again to report more than
$249,000.

Most of the Dems who will be voted out of office don't care. It's more important to them that their lifelong goal of a Government run health care system be enacted than it is to be re-elected. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for them, and they won't screw it up.
I get a real kick of out the celebrating when there is one "no"vote announced in between 3 "yes" votes.
To repeat...the NO votes were given permission. They have no impact on the bill's passage. And I'll be here to keep the realistic info coming!

Maybe it's in Pelosi's bottled water.
Posted by: HeatherRadish at March 20, 2010 04:50 PM (OkT2m)
The problem I see her procedurally is that I don't understand how they think they can amend a bill. You can amend a law (that's why we have constitutional amendments, the consitutional is a law or laws--amend means to fix by adding). You can't amend a bill because it isn't a law until it is passed and signed.
Posted by: dagny at March 20, 2010 08:31 PM (Qpll4)
OK, time for clarification.
You can amend a law by passing another law.
You can amend a bill by introducing an amendment in your own house of Congress (i.e., the House of Representatives or Senate) and getting a majority of your peers to vote for it. The amendment becomes part of the bill -- but the bill does not become law at that point.
If one house passes a bill and the other house amends it during debate (e.g., if the Senate passes a health care bill and the House amends it), then the House version of the bill has to go back to the Senate for another debate and vote. The conference committee process is designed to make that back-and-forth quicker by letting selected members of both houses convene to come up with a mutually acceptable compromise, which then has to be voted on -- without further amendment -- by both houses in order to be eligible for the President's signature.
Because Scott Brown made a Republican filibuster harder to break in the Senate, Pelosi is desperate for a way to commit the Senate to changing its own health care plan while bypassing any Senate procedure that can be filibustered. Thus the reconciliation dodge, using a procedure meant only for budget items and specifically to reduce the deficit: reconciliation isn't subject to the filibuster rule. But it only applies to laws already passed, and thus Pelosi cannot offer any guarantee that once the House passes the Senate bill to make it eligible for reconciliation, the Senate will pass any further law (reconciliation or otherwise) to change its own health care plan.
Posted by: stuiec at March 20, 2010 04:50 PM (W+GYq)
The reconciliation package is smoke and mirrors.
It is meaningless. To become meaningful, it would have to go to the senate and then back to the house.
So then, the passed "Senate Bill'' (with all it's imperfections) will become law - as of - the second Nancy's gavel hits and Obama's Rose Garden signing ceremony is scheduled. Which will, be right away.

That won't help. You'll also have to be in good standing with the approved government health plan(s) and placidly obeying all of Papa Doc Obama's new rules. Otherwise, if you earn more than three times "poverty" income (I thinks that's roughly $60K for a family) the IRS is going to come after your sweet self, and slap you upside the head with penalties.
And do you really think the current proposed tax increases will be the end? When we have a bunch of new illegal aliens Democrats added to the plans, why Congress will have to steal more money from us, just to stave off total economic collapse.
Add to that whatever the President-for-Life wants to spend to make Iran, Indonesia, Kenya and other beloved friends of America into little socialist paradises, and the cost will be beyond staggering.
Osama Obama's ego will soon make it impossible for the government printing presses to keep up with the demand for currency worthless paper.

I'm in the hope for the best-prepare for the worst mentality.
I spent a good part of the past few days in bars and places were this bill should be on no one's radar. Rather everyone is talking about it--and not kindly. And I live in libtard nation so that's a good sign. Young peole I've talked to (thanks 52%!!) don't understand the mandate and why it's not even effective for anothoer four years. Baby steps with them. No need to try to explain the deficit. I was just happy to see they knew this much.
I honestly think we could take back the House if every single one of our candidates campaigned on one single platform: repeal. Repeal the parts that are unconstitutional via the judiciary and the parts unpopular back through the House and Senate chambers. True that sounds easier said than done, but bit by bit I think it can be done.
The media has spent the past few week regurgitating the Dem talking points that we'll love! the bill once we see how good it is for us. Are they in for a wake up call. Most likely one they've never seen.
In short, regardless of tomorrow's vote, we will survive.

They don't care how little you make--the fine for not having "acceptable" insurance is $2500 or 2.5% of income, whichever is greater, because if you're at 300% or less of "poverty"* they expect you to take their subsidies. And military coverage--the gov't's own fucking insuranc--may not be "acceptable." They haven't decided yet, but they refuse to add a rule saying it is.

Hardly likely. Pelosi will not release any of her spare votes yet, not until the vote on the House floor opens and she gets a real count of how many Yeses she can bank. Anyone voting NO solely because of a pass from Pelosi will have to vote Yes first and then will be given permission to go back and change his vote before the vote closes.

Not if he felt his presidency was in the balance so he had to stay here until the last minute to do everything he could to get this pile of crap passed. One could also say he wouldn't have made his little public appearance and pep talk earlier today if he already had the votes. Then again, perhaps they already have them and his appearance and pep talk was his way of giving those Democrats from red districts that vote "No" a boost for November because it would look like they have a backbone by thumbing their nose at him. I don't know and neither do you. The point is, every piece of evidence you point to as indicating that the Democrats already have the votes to pass it tomorrow could also be easily seen as indicating that they don't have the numbers to pass it yet.

Problem with this is the fact that all the weaker willed, smaller minded than normal dems that Pelosi has dealed out the Pass cards to in the Past AREN'T getting them this time- Boccieri, that witch from Colorado, etc.
They need all the votes they can get.
Plus, I am convinced they already have the final vote ringer in place- a safe seat so no one has to walk down the aisle to the catcalls of "Buh- Bye!" like Marjolie Mahjevens-wht the hell ever-sky did after casting the deciding vote for Clinton's tax package in 1992-
it is Lynch. He is a safe seat, he is a union guy, and a part of the leadership team- and he seems to be catching NO heat for his supposed "ooposition" based on the cadillac tax.
They have their ducks in a row- yes. but they DO NOT have the votes...YET.
KEEP UP THE PRESSURE. we kill it here, they do not get this thru before Easter break, I do not see how they can at all this session- it will be dead.
Unless, of course, Obama says "fuck it" and signs it into law by executive order at the Easter Egg Roll (I got $20 on that one.....)

I honestly think we could take back the House if every single one of our candidates campaigned on one single platform: repeal. Repeal the parts that are unconstitutional via the judiciary and the parts unpopular back through the House and Senate chambers. True that sounds easier said than done, but bit by bit I think it can be done.
We already have the House. It's the Senate that's in play. Governors and statehouses could be swept, too.

Umm, The Won went to Copenhagen to claim the Olympics for Chicago, and went home empty handed.
But if it does pass, the November campaign starts immediately. Use this blog and others to get information out on the republican house & senate candidates, who they are and how to support them. Get out indivdually and work phone banks and walk precincts delivering literature. We will have to do for free what Seiu pays its thugs to do (no not kneecap people) - we will need to get out the vote and vote these traitors out.
The Founding Fathers fought a war of independence, when only about 30% of the colonists wanted independence. The Founding Fathers fought and won. WE CAN WIN if we fight these treasonous cowards. Around 60% of Americans right now don't want this healthcare bill shoved down our throats. Just wait till taxes go up immediately. We can win in November and we will if we stay focused.

UPDATE: Rep. Sanchez's DC number is no longer taking voice mails. The best number to call her at is at her Santa Ana campaign office. We've updated the script in Neighbor to Neighbor with the new information. If you live in congressional district 47 (Central Orange County), let Rep. Sanchez know that you support the President and want the health reform bill to pass:
714-839-4431
We need one more California Member of Congress to commit to voting YES on health insurance reform. Please make calls NOW to constituents in Congressional District 47, home of Loretta Sanchez. Rep. Sanchez voted Yes for health reform last fall. Tell people to let her know she MUST support it NOW.
Why would Sanchez be undecided? Any CA folks who can call in their "support" to her?

It's odd, Fox is like the only whip count that has us in trouble. The rest look OK for us, or are neck and neck. It seems like they are being very aggressive with putting people who are undecided or leaning in a firm position in their tally.
The way I see it, it will be close either way probly 4 votes give or take either side so it really isnt hard for anyone to be close in the end in their predictions.
The FDL one, and The Hill both look pretty positive for us, but then you turn on the TV and they act like its a done deal. Just gotta hope I guess!

Sauropod is another axelrod payroller.
Just wait until the taxes start and docs start retiring rather than be forced to work for free. People are pissed about the economy & job market and are in no mood to start funding another multi-trillion dollar entitlement program for leeches. A lot of the coverage in this bill is Medicaid coverage. Medicaid is paid for by the states. Most states are on the verge of bankruptcy. Right now medical care in the states under Medicaid is going unfunded. Hospitals and pharmacies are going broke.
If this passes, it will be worse for Obama than if it fails.

Riots? Yes. Food riots when people are compelled to choose between paying heavy fines or feeding the family. Anyone who think there aren't millions of people out there, not on welfare, who can't afford to pay the fine or buy the insurance is on drugs.
There is no slack left today for millions of people. None. It ain't there. Many are already defaulting on mortgages to keep the power on or feed the family, and you think they aren't going to do something drastic when you tell'em they gotta cough up another $2,500 in fines? Dream on.

bob, today I was in wally mart and I witnessed a lively discussion between two women, both black. but both were joined in their lively discussion by white women and one woman from el salvador. You could see the manager watching to see if these ladies would come to blows. Anyway, while i was standing there observing it occurred to me that the two original participants one black woman was obviously upper middle class and the other one was obviously middle class. As near as I could tell as the man in front of me online filled me in. They innocently started talking about this bill to one another. The upper middle class black woman apparently was telling the other woman why she is being played by the gummit and why stuff like this isn't good for black people, it only keeps them down. The middle class woman was basically saying well you make enough money, more than me so you should pay more taxes. It was funny cause the woman from el savador was watching just like me and finally couldn't stay quiet anymore and began talking about ruining this country and how it is starting to look like venezuela and man when she said hugo's name she made it sound like the dirtiest word on earth....the man in front of me said "i was half expecting her to spit after she said hugo with that much venom"....It was like a slice of America....they shouted, they talked, they realized that it is not so much a race issue but a class issue and that instead of fighting among themselves that they were really all on the same page and loved this country and love their liberty and want the people, all the people to have opportunities. So thanks to Wally mart for having exactly three cashiers open on Saturday.
My point is, they aren't going to forget about this. They, everyone are talking about it in Walmart on a Saturday. There is no going back from this. We are forever changed. People have begun to ignore PC and have stopped worrying about being criticized or having someone punch them. They have observed this, they have been thinking and they are going to have their say, even if it is in Wally mart on a saturday.

I'm going to go and ride my horses tomorrow; I don't care if it rains. I'm not going to follow this vote closely, because what would be the point? One way or the other, it will be voted on, and at this point there is nothing anyone can do about it (except perhaps to say a prayer for divine providence, which probably isn't a bad idea).
I tend to enjoy myself and take a relaxing break -- it's always good to do that during the lulls.
Tomorrow I think we find out just how many hidden enemies Mz. Pelosi has...and perhaps how many the precedent does too. I think we might find out who has their eyes on the Speaker position. The long knives may be out tomorrow; it will at least be interesting.

To me it would be hard to claim that the House passed the Senate bill unchanged if they vote for the "fix" first. Hard to fix a bill that does not yet exist. I thought for reconciliation to be used a bill had to be law first and then budgetary fixes could be voted on through reconciliation. In the case of voting on the fixes first says the House wants changes to the Senate bill. Any changes have to be run back to the Senate and the filibuster comes into to play. Only if the Senate bill passes first with out any changes should a reconciliation process come into play.
I know its a technicality but procedurally I can't see how the House can play this scheme legally. The courts may have to make this decision as the Democrats want to rule by fiat without concern for the public.

The margin will be tiny whether it passes or fails and it won't make a bit of difference unless it passes with 217, which would provide the GOP with the ability to say every "Yes" vote was the one that passed the lousy health care bill. The polls say that as much as 73% of the public is against ObamaCare, and that's going to be a pretty precise hit on everyone's daily life and pocket at a time when such things are already under considerable stress. Add to that the feeling that government has been a debacle for quite a while (under both parties) and you've got conditions that could make it a lot worse than the summer of '68.

Posted by: stuiec at March 20, 2010 08:29 PM
I don't think so. I think this was the plan from the beginning. The whole Reconciliation/Slaughter/Deem and Pass crap was just a cover for the House Dems. They dragged this out so they could say to their constituents, "see we tried to change it." But the intention was to pass the Senate bill all along. Pelosi used all this other stuff to cover the so-called Blue-Dogs' and others' asses. They had to know the Senate would never accept the amendments, it was all a scam. The so-called Reconcilitaion bill will die a slow death and the Senate bill will become law, and that's what all these disgusting Libs wanted all along.

Two quick thoughts on the above:
1. You can't just count the number of people who showed up in DC for the tea party rally today without also counting the numbers who were there on previous rallies. My family was there on 9/12, but we're not going back every time they have another rally. Ignore us, because we weren't there today, at your peril. (And I will be working to defeat lots of supposed "pro life" "fiscally responsible" Ohio Democrats for the balance of this year.)
2. Even more people are going to realize this is a bad bill when they find out they can't get health care coverage 6 months from now because they can't afford it. They will be looking for the government handout and will be told: wait 4 years. Not a single person who was brought up as an example for why we need this bill will be helped in 2010 - the media won't report it, but the blog-o-sphere will. There is no way people will like this legislation more in 2010 or 2011 or 2012 than they do now because it will not help anybody in 2010 or 2011 or 2012, but it will increase health insurance costs, hurt job creation, cause people to lose their jobs, and cause people to lose their current health insurance.
3. Bottom line: Dems. don't. care.

True, they have been, but they've held solid here. Outside of maybe Cao, not a single defection in the entire Congress.
Obama's healthcare summit gave me the first confidence I had in years that Republicans in Congress are learning how to throw a punch (and that's coming from someone who was originally against it). This also has to be at least somewhat humiliating to our guys who were in the Gang of 14 group. I think they're finally learning.

And then Drew claimed that two of the "maybes" went "No"? Isn't that supposed to mean we're in good shape?
OTOH, Gabe's last "maybe" list didn't add up to the number he said (off by one, by my count), and it sounds like some of the Stupak "No's" that he's counting (I think) may actually be "Yes".

478 Oh, they'll keep plugging -- but perhaps without Nanzi the not so fair. I'm not so sure something might be underfoot to deep six her botoxed ass. Malignant narcissists have a problem: they can't stand to share the limelight -- since the inaugeration there have been manueverings among the top Dems to try and step into the stagelight with their one and only. They're willing to stab each other in the back -- have been doing it or trying to get into position for 18 months, and one big problem: their one and only doesn't like to share the theater, let alone the stage.
Perpare for even more mayhem and little resolution tomorrow -- Reid was first; now it may be Nanzi's turn.

So far, they've been handling it in pieces. Cantor & Boehner have been focusing on House rules, logistics, taking apart the bill line-by-line, while Ryan is offering his own plan & having the CBO budget DeathCare to the best of their ability. They've scored some points, though I don't know how much it will do. But at least their not rolling over & doing nothing.

The solution is to take the house, separate the budget bills such that the HCR crap is isolated from anything people need or care about. Then cut it to the bone, so deep they can't afford phones, computers, staff, etc. - that $50B they need to implement is their Achilles' Heel. The Antideficiency Act is our friend.

Elections have consequences. And all those good conservatives who couldn't bear to hold their noses and vote McCain/Palin can now pat themselves on the back. While Obama and Pelosi have spent the past week literally kicking arse and taking names, the Republican "leadership" has been sitting on its thumbs, worrying over the whip count and simply watching the dominoes fall. When Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh can mobilize tens or hundreds of thousands, but Mitt Romney and... er... well, I guess just Mitt Romney... can't even emerge from hiding to make a single, compelling argument to Fight-Fight-Fight... then, as Corporal Hicks said, "Game over, man! Game over!"
Dem lawmakers are not worried about losing their seats in November. That's a hypothetical. Voting "No" and facing a primary challenge orchestrated by an angry and vengeful Nancy Pelosi is a given. The Republican party, at this time, simply has no one strong enough or smart enough to go head-to-head against the Dems and win.
As an interested and friendly neighbour (yes, it's spelled with a "u") from the north, I can only say... good luck with that. I'm a big fan of America, but as an interested friend I've been worried about you lately. This whole Obama/The One thing has been kind of creepy. But as of tomorrow night, I guess I should really just say... "welcome." Because it's not like I'm losing a great neighbour... it's more like I'm gaining another 300 million countrymen.

I think we're off track discussing whether or not we'll ever be able to repeal this bill. Wrong conversation.
The big question is whether or not we'll be able to pass a Republican version of Health Care Reform in a few years.
I think the left is betting that this bill will be such an abortion that Americans will accept a conversion to a single-payer, government-run system.
Maybe the GOP should start running on simplifying health care and offering more choice to citizens. Perhaps the government could provide catastrophic coverage to all citizens while promoting a free market for more comprehensive insurance. I think that would be a better option than just pushing for repeal.

The cost of those plans (or more accurately - the allowable costs under the contract, and maximum employee contribution) would be very low, so the rest of the insurance agencies customers would have to bear the cost -- if any companies took the bait. A quasi-Federal entity -- Indian tribe, DC city government, somebody, maybe more then one -- would offer a package to all comers and get a backdoor subsidy to cover the real costs. De Facto public option, and the long slide into socialism continues.
Posted by: Jean at March 20, 2010 06:37 PM (CPefM)
Posted by: Deanna at March 20, 2010 10:02 PM (JXlgX)
My take on it is that the Reconciliation/Demon Pass ploy wasn't aimed at fooling the constituents, but rather at fooling the Dem House members themselves. It was an effort to convince the weak-minded in their caucus that their vote would have "plausible deniability," when none of their constituents would find it either plausible or deniable.

504 Facts are stubborn things and I'm a compulsive picture straightener.
In the last two Presidential elections, 62,041,000 voted for Pres. Bush in 2004 and 59,935,000 voted for John McCain in 2008, a decline of 2,106,000.
Similarly, 59,028,000 voted for John F'ng Kerry in 2004 and 69,457,000 voted for B. Obama, an increase of 10,429,000.
McCain lost the popular vote by 9,522,000, so I hardly think the 2.1 million who voted in 2004 and stayed home in 2008 were the deciding factor.
Distribution/concentration of the votes to maximize Electoral College totals (286 for Bush in 2004, 385 for Obama in 200
had to be the result of where the extra 9.5 million democratic party Obama voters showed up.
BTW, I've confused Hicks and Hudson too. There is even a scene where the new Lt. mixes them up. Pvt. Hudson was the emotional one, Corporal Hicks was the hero (other than Ripley).
Now, on to the ONT!

CountdeMonet, You will see that Obama ran up HUGE popular vote totals in californaia, illinois, and new york. Just those 3 states accounted for a huge percentage of that 9 million gap. Those are 3 of the bluest states and gets the same elctoral votes whether he wins by 1 or 1 million.
Bottom line, all a GOP person has to do in 2012 is win the 2004 bush states, by 1 vote each if need be, and they beat Obama. Due to electoral college changes the GOP person could even afford to lose a few of the 2004 bush states and still win.
You will find that many or almost all of the red states Obama turned blue were by 8% or less. Many were 5% or less in the worst year for republicans in my life time. A turn around in 2012 is not hard to see at all.

The largest form of civil disobedience was some jaywalking. Gotta give props to the Capitol Hill Police - they were pretty cool. I'm happy to report they didn't give Grandpa or Grandma a wood shampoo for stepping off the curb.
The biggest surprise of the day was the M-4 assault rifles the cops were sporting. The second-most-asked question I heard after "Where can I find a bathroom?" was "what kind of gun is that?"
