Obama's "CyberShield" will be reading your email contents
— Purple Avenger

The program is codenamed "Einstein"

The Obama administration lifted the veil Tuesday on a highly-secretive set of policies to defend the U.S. from cyber attacks...

...Homeland program known as Einstein...

...The program is designed to look for indicators of cyber attacks by digging into all Internet communications, including the contents of emails, according to the declassified summary...

DHS? An Obama program called Einstein? What could possibly go wrong?

When screaming doesn't work, they fall back on intimidation.)

25 This smart, sensible program is why I remain bullish on Obama. This is a true conservative move. It is the essence of true conservatism: good government that works to keep us safe. Once again, Obama proves that he is smarter than his critics. And wiser. And more temperate. And more compassionate and sophisticated and intelligent and mature. Let the wingnuts scream. Obama's protecting them, too. If only they were wise enough to see it. No, this program isn't perfect. It won't let us see inside that vile Sarah Palin's uterus. But it reminds me of why I look upon our brilliant Oakshottean President with pride every day, and thank my Saviour that he is here to deliver us from the Neocons and the Christianists. Know Hope.

Can't say I'm surprised with this, I've been reading about the push to give the Executive branch control over the Internet in case of a "cyber attack."  They even ran "war games" a few weeks ago and claimed that a virus starting on smart phones could take down the Internet and the power grids.

So rather than publicly announcing the findings and telling people "if your phone or computer is acting strange and you suspect it's got a virus, unplug it, disconnect it from the Internet, or remove the battery."

No, the best response is to give the Government unfettered control over the Internet.  No problems with that at all.

Critical infrastructure or classified military systems operating on the public internet is the problem, not the public internet.  That sort of shit needs either dedicated lines, and/or "callback" modems and physical separation from the public internet, period.  Anything less is a bogus vulnerable architecture.

Crackability per se isn't necessarily the issue with this sort of thing, its the compute power needed for a quasi-real-time crack.  Even a relatively weak encryption can take gobs of compute power to bust it in a time frame where the information isn't stale/useless by the time you've cracked it.

In the case of a wildfire type internet outbreak, that crack time better be measured in the tens of seconds if you wanted to be able to put a plug in it before potentially millions of machines were affected.

America suffered an extreme, psychotic break with the onset of the credit crisis and manifested the worst part of the pathology on Nov 4th.  People made the most frivolous choice possible at one of the most consequential of times.  It was, without a doubt, a declaration of national suicide.  Now, many people are waking up to what they did.  But, a great deal of damage (much irreparable) has already been done and their suicidal vote, while in the throes of that deep psychosis, is still operative and eating away at the very fabric of this nation.

I used that reasoning on a lefty friend recently re ObamaCare. "Y'know, the Democrats aren't going to be in power forever. Someday the Republicans will be back, and they'll inherit all that machinery and power structure. The minute they do, BAM! You get your miscarriage investigated by the police. You have to explain to a doctor approved by Sarah Palin why you want a vasectomy. You're not sure who knows you have irritable bowel syndrome." It freaked him out a bit.

110 Way long ago, in the early '80s, my brother and I were both in the Marines. We'd heard from somewhere that there was a huge super computer complex that was listening into half the telephone convos at any one time and screening calls for drug related words as part of the War on Drugs.

We didn't know if it was true or not. But we decided to have fun with it, just in case.

So, our phone convos went like this:

Me: Hey bro, hows the cocaine?
Him: Not bad bro, how's your cocaine?
Me: All good. Hey, I got 15 days cocaine time coming up next month. Can you get cut loose?
Him: Yeah. Where you want  to go for cocaine?
Me: Pattaya Beach?
Him: No, the cocaine there sucks and it's too expensive. How about Subic Bay?
Me: Yeah. The cocaine there is good.
Him: When you leaving for your cocaine?
Me: 10th next.
Him: See you there. Happy cocaine to you. Viva La North Korea.
Me: Happy cocaine to you too, bro. Commies Rule.

We never once got a visit, a letter or anything. We were so disappointed.

111 In one of the Brad Thor books, the terrorists would use a yahoo mail account that they all could access. A message would be written and saved in the draft folder. The intended recipient would log in, read the message and then delete the draft. Since it was never sent out into the internets, it couldn't be monitored.

I know it's fiction, but just wondering if such a simple solution was feasible.

Sure, and quite secure if accessed only from public library computers.  Of course some server somewhere still contains the draft, but even that could be typed in using an uncrackable coding -- when the email account ID/passwords are handed out, you'd just hand out a set of "one-time pads" as well.

One-time pad encryptions are not machine crackable.

161 I wonder why they're in so much trouble?

Operating costs.  UPS/FedEx don't even come close to physically stopping at (or at least driving by) almost every deliverable address in the nation on an almost daily basis.

UPS/FedEx also have FAR fewer company operated brick/mortar locations they have to maintain.  A huge amount of the facilities cost the Post Office absorbs has been farmed out to OfficeMax, Office Depot, and Pack&Ship type places.

If UPS/FedEx had to operate as pervasively on a daily basis as the post office does, they'd suddenly be in deep trouble too and an ordinary letter would cost well over a dollar to send.

UPS and FedEx also have zero interest if you're defrauded by someone using their service; too bad for you; better luck next time.  The whole Postal Inspectors arm of the post office that tracks down and builds cases to prosecute mail frauds has to be operating at a paper loss, but something that affords citizens a lot of protection.

I've had some dealings with the Postal Inspectors in the past over a small eBay purchase that totaled just over $10.  When I sent the complaint form in, I wasn't expecting much because the amount was so small, but a few months later the crooked seller did send my $10 back and seemed irritated I'd sic the Feds on him over a paltry $10.  Apparently the postal inspectors are very serious and relentless about mail fraud, even when the transaction value is small.  I find some measure of comfort in that.  Even if we have to pay for it, that's a value that private enterprise is largely unequipped to provide or have any interest in.

Posted by: Purple Avenger at March 04, 2010 05:19 AM (+JHKW)

Yea, it is.   It gets cheap rates, but in exchange for that, its delivered to the post office barcoded, presorted, etc.  Just the barcoding alone allows for completely automated sorting/handling.  Junk mail is a money maker for the post office.

Depends on what day of the week it is, and whether or not Barry's Worf is an "official spokesbeing" that day.....

Interesting tidbit I saw displayed while Lt. Worf was going on about the necessity for the Feds to micromanage my child's lunch choices for school....

the Board of education in Jackson MS got over 35 million in Porkulus bucks.....

Do a quick thumbnail, most counties in the US average a minimum of 4 districts per county.

4* 35 million=140,000,000

Ohio for example has 88 counties

88*140,000,000=12,320,000,000

50 states*12,320,000,000=616,000,000,000

So if we gave every distrcit the treatment that jackson MS got it'd "only" cost 616 billion dollars......

I better shut up or I might give Jugears the Clown ideas......

April 15, 2010.     10 airplanes.        Al Qaeda.
Obama called.          Panetta ok'd.           Blow me.

This ought to keep them busy for awhile.

181 Sounds like I will have to use a jpeg for my signature in every email from now on and encrypt the following text in it. Fuck you jug eared douchebag marxist and your Wookie too.

Ok, I know it's already been said in this thread, but weren't we reminded, and aren't we still constantly reminded by the left that BOOOOSH and the Rethuglicans/Wingnuts/Eeeeevil Neocons/Rightards/etc trampled on, shredded, and wiped their asses with The Constitution because of the Patriot Act?  Even though not a single fucking one of them can give any real example about a citizen who had their rights infringed upon because of it.

I guess now that Obummer and his merry band of fucktards have refined things to feed their leftist knobslobbers their daily allowance of nuance, The Constitution has been restored in their tiny little mindthoughts.

I'm not ready to denounce this thing completely yet, but this is the sort of shit the left went full pants-on-head retard about for years.  And you still hear about it in cesspools of rabid ignorance like the NYT online comments section.

These folks are gonna make a maniac outta me yet.

185 I thought they were already doing this. Does this just put a patina of legality over it?

Posted by: ParanoidGirlInSeattle at March 04, 2010 07:30 AM (RZ8pf)

186 So, the govt. can't profile suspected terrorists, but they can invade the privacy of legal, law-abiding citizens.  Color me not surprised.

189 You expect anyone to swallow this bilge? Conservatives were all  for this sh*t when Bush and Cheney were the ones proposing the loss of our Constitutional rights, all in the name of 'national security' and 'public safety'. Now, because it's a Democrat, suddenly you're all against it. Stop the f*cking hypocrisy.

Posted by: JEA at March 04, 2010 08:01 AM (ZO0u/)

190 And I, JEA, certainly never advocated the violent overthrow of the government during the blood-thirsty reign of Bush/Cheney or donated money to HAMAS. Nor did I try to buy uranium for my Iranian paymasters.

195 Jug Ears Anonymous,

What bilge your jug-eye moron ran on "stopping the illegal Bush actions" early on until he calculated he may in fact get the big chair.....

Hypocrisy is when a party spends 6 years shitting itself for atttention and then when it finally gets the birthday biy chair through their passive-aggressive actions pretends their shit doesn't stink.

So it is OK with a Dem doing it now, eh?

You expect anyone to swallow this bilge?

I haven't seen you denouncing Obama's flavor of the day yet.  Surprise us.

The burden of being such a brilliant mind, like Obama, is that he sees his own mistakes, sometimes immediately.

So every time he changes from excoriating the previous administration for an idea to embracing and furthering that idea, that is only proof of his incredible, supreme brilliance.

Now if you'll excuse me, I've got to get ready for my three-martini lunch with Van Jones.

JEA = useful idiot.

This is the kind of dolt that will sing hosannas to the commie government even after they've thrown his ass into a death camp. Right up until the bullet smashes into the back of his head, he'll be praising dear leader.
