— Ace I'm listening in now. Missed the beginning.
Obama: There will be an administration response on Sestak coming "shortly" (days not weeks; how about tomorrow, a Friday, I'm thinking) he claims will satisfy people. He claims "nothing improper" happened.
Top Kill Feed: They have it playing in the corner on Fox. This isn't what I expected success to look like.
OH MY GOD: 5,000 barrels of oil per day?
They might have underestimated slightly on that.
The new estimate: Up to one million gallons per day.
Correction: I wrote that they thought 5,000 gallons were leaking per day, now revised up to 1,000,000.
A reader says I have that wrong -- it was 5,000 barrels, now increased to 1,000,000 gallons. At 55 gallons per barrel, this works out to 275,000 barrels -- so it's not a big a jump as I thought, but still huge.
Whoops: 42 gallons per barrel for crude, so around 230,000 barrels per day.
Uh-Huh: Defending his dealings with BP, he says there was a lack of "urgency" regarding efforts to clean up/enforce safety provisions, but none of the "corrupt practices" of the previous administration occurred in the "current administration."
Doesn't Support Boycotts Against Arizona, But Of Course Is "Examining" Law. BTW, I'm watching clips of his answers now; he ended the conference 15 minutes ago.
I'm So In Charge and In Command I Don't Even Know If MMS Director Elizabeth Birmbaum Was Fired or Resigned. The press is pressing him on this (small, I think) issue. It's emblematic, though, that President Present can't even commit to a position on this.

That is a lot, but don't forget how unimaginably huge the world is. There are twenty thousand million million gallons of water in that ocean.
The spill is kind of a big deal. But kind of. The Gulf spill in '79 was much worse, and the ocean didn't give a fuck.

"There has been over 30 days of leaking oil and Governor Jindal has repeatedly attempted to get permission from the EPA to build sand bars to protect the wetlands. Would you agree that your failure to order the suspension of EPA regulations and oversight, in this limited situation, actually made a manageable situation with regard to the oil washing into the the wetlands worse than it otherwise might have been?
Follow-up question:
What is keeping you from issuing an order to the EPA since it has become obvious to even the most casual observer that there are two issues involved with this spill:
1. capping the well
2. protecting the coastline
It seems one is not necessarily dependent on the other.

After golf games, fund raising and vacations that is
As an example of the government's hands-on approach, Obama said that BP had wanted to drill a single "relief" well in an effort to eventually stop the leak in several months if all else failed. Instead, the administration insisted on two relief wells being drilled, Obama said.

And why the hell is DHS telling Texas authorities to do the DHS job?
Ask the Obama Man.
The Department of Homeland Security is alerting Texas authorities to be on the lookout for a suspected member of the Somalia-based Al Shabaab terrorist group who might be attempting to travel to the U.S. through Mexico, a security expert who has seen the memo tells FOXNews.com.
The warning follows an indictment unsealed this month in Texas federal court that accuses a Somali man in Texas of running a “large-scale smuggling enterprise” responsible for bringing hundreds of Somalis from Brazil through South America and eventually across the Mexican border. Many of the illegal immigrants, who court records say were given fake IDs, are alleged to have ties to other now-defunct Somalian terror organizations that have merged with active organizations like Al Shabaab, al-Barakat and Al-Ittihad Al-Islami.

OH MY GOD: 5,000 gallons of oil per day?
They might have underestimated slightly on that.
The new estimate: Up to one million gallons per day.
I am more than highly skeptical. Ixtoc I, which everyone remembers, was about 6 times worse than this (By current official estimate), and it was also the worst accidental spill in history, and the environment recovered in about 5 years; And everyone remembers that. They think it was bad but we got over it and improved technique. They need people to think that drilling is just to dangerous, in order to keep traction on their "Drill nowhere, ever" meme, they need this to have a greater impact than Ixtoc I which was plugged after months of leaking.
The first step in that plan is to modify the official spill estimate so that it is worse than Ixtoc I. So that instead of calling it "The worst spill in US History" which wouldn't even rank in the top ten world wide nor the worst in the gulf (Ixtoc I again), you can call it "The worst accidental spill in history" and with a real generous estimate of one million gallons a day you can even call it "The worst oil spill ever"
Step 2, play up the environmental impact.
Step 3, Highlight how safety engineering failed to prevent the disaster, and how big oil attitudes toward the possibility spill made it inevitable.
Step 4, declare that oil drilling is inherently risky to the environment, and the risky attitude of private companies oil drilling for profit places everyone in huge danger. A problem which can only be solved by
Step 5, Government takeover of oil drilling. So that the government not motivated by profit or saving money can make sure appropriate safety precautions are in place and only necessary wells are drilled; None of this reckless "anywhere we can get oil" attitude.
From there we can go to rationing, controlling your commute, whatever the opportunities are endless, and acts as a good fallback if global warming cap and tax falls apart.

It was an expensive locally owned flooring place, too, not Lowes or some place like that. We had used them a couple of years ago to do window treatments, so we thought they would be ok for this.
Anyway, we had been planning on doing some built-ins around our fireplace and talked to them about it before the floor job, yet they still futzed around. Needless to say, they are not getting that job. Nor are they getting the carpet job we're doing this summer.
Very frustrating.

I'd have to agree with Dave.
Neoconservative Rick Perry isn't just adding PC liberalism to the Republican Party in Texas and nationally. He wasn't just bashing AZ with his "we're too good for that" response. Too good? Wasn't "good" for Perry's administration to authorize Dept. of CPS to kidnap every non-adult from their homes re:Eldorado USING A FALSE COMPLAINT FROM A LYING PRECINCT CHAIRMAN OBAMA SUPPORTER IN COLORADO.
On security matters, Perry's administration allowed the burning destruction of the Texas Governor's Mansion.
Rhetorical lip service to appease voters aside, Rick Perry is not doing what the Texas Governor could, and isn't interested in getting politically involved in actually securing the Texas/Mexico border. He wouldn't support Texas legislation to enable cohesive organization between the Texas Rangers, border sheriffs, and STATE border patrol agents to secure traffic incoming from Mexico. After all, Perry wants the damned highway from hell as badly as McCain wants amnesty for illegals with or without the "danged" promo fence.

who are these guys claiming to now know it was millions of gallons/day? One "expert" was some college kid, some guy figured millions but claimed the 21 inch pipe was five feet. I'd guess it was may be double what they estimated at first (and that estimate was not be BP).
Huge numbers play well with histrionic reporting, and with the far left, and with most of the lefty reporters. Actual reports of oil are usually shown with a close up of little globs, and a sobbing reporter.
Yes, there will be some damage, but the left and nuts are disappointed they can't say "see, we must shut down all oil production and move straight to wind powered cars".

Exactly. Almost all the "reporting" I've seen from the MFM has been conjecture and hypotheticals - "This could be the worst environmental disaster since the dinosaurs got whacked by that meteor", "Scientists say it could be gushing 80,000 barrels a day", "If a hurricane comes, Louisiana will be all oily for centuries". No facts, no desire for facts.
Yes, there will be some damage, but the left and nuts are disappointed they can't say "see, we must shut down all oil production and move straight to wind powered cars".
Well, they're going to do this anyway. Look at Barky's "opened eyes", as if he never understood that there are risks in drilling, as there are risks in every arena of life. Fucking bubble-wrapped magical thinking shitheads everywhere, unable to imagine that life involves compromise.

On an earlier thread re: BP oil leak I wrote that the USCG gave permission to BP 36 days ago to perform the "top-kill" procedure but then nothing happened.
I was incorrect. I researched this and the USCG was going to perform a controlled fire surface burn of the oil (don't know they decided not to do this) - not a Top-Kill Procedure with mud. Sorry for the mis-information.
I'm such a damned Moronette today!

That is TWENTY-THREE THOUSAND EIGHT HUNDRED NINE.
Not 230,000 barrels. Sorry to be a stickler, but your number is off by an order of magnitude.
That being said, why have they suddenly switched from reporting bbl/day to gallons/day?
Many people will look at the number and go 'BP must have lied because they were off by a factor of 200 (1 million barrels vs. 5000 barrels)'.
They'll never notice the original measurement was bbl/day and the new measurement is gallons/day.

Move the decimal point over one position. 23,000.

I heard that. Rush is totally correct. Said that they wouldn't have to paint Obama as caring if he really was. The fact that it had to be supplanted into the brains of the poor, unwashed masses is exactly because he doesn't care. It's mucking up his real agenda: the realignment of our society. That's all he cares about....that, and wagyu beef, golfing, parties and perks.

O and commies and Saudis don't want offshore drilling...O and commies and Saudis let this destroy La. just to make a point.
Employment whistleblowers....Fired then rehired occurring in Census worker figures...
The list is endless.
Coal mine accident.....don't want coal to be mined...saudis and commies can't get rich on coal.
Where did all those cynics go?
Frank and Dodd...creators of financial crisis, creating laws for new crisis.

This is a great point. If the DOJ isn't immediately on this corruption like a chicken on a junebug then Obama is a part of the coverup.

SCHUYLER, Neb. (AP) -- ACLU Nebraska is calling on Schuyler Community Schools to abandon a district policy that would require students to show proof of residency.
A letter from the ACLU to superintendent Robin Stevens says the policy violates state and federal laws that allow for free public education.
The policy gives parents and guardians a one-week deadline to provide documentation establishing residency and threatens criminal prosecution and expulsion for giving false information.
Stevens says the district's attorney didn't see a problem with the policy, which was passed by the school board on Monday. Stevens says that was the first of two required votes for a policy to be enacted.

The CNN folks actually had the sense to react incredulously at Obama's remark that "the only thing I regret about my decision to increase drilling is my assumption that the oil companies had their act together."
Even Wolf Blitzer took that as passing the buck yet again. And what's her name actually said on the air "after a year and a half, blaming the Bush administration is wearing thin."

I am sure the media was all over the Idiot 'n Chief asking what he meant by "corrupt practices" of the previous administration. If he is going to slander someone in that manner he should be made to back it up. I want to see some people prosecuted if they were corrupt.
I wish that Pres.Bush would suspend his "silence out of respect for the office of President" stand and challenge Toonces on his constant attacks on the Bush Admin. as being corrupt. I would make him spell it out with actual facts not just his general vague statements and blanket smears. Make him answer and don't let up until he breaks.

Well if it didn't take 500 Pascals to suck soda through a straw, or 1000 watts to power a bicycle we might have switched by now. I mean really, the Meter is an arbitrary unit after all, you could have at least set up the system so acceleration due to gravity was an even number.

I'm sure I agree with Ace on something in this, but I'm not bothering to read the whole thing because you don't need an engineering degree to know that a barrel of beer, a barrel of whiskey, a barrel of crude oil, a barrel of finished product, and a barrel of Ace-blows-it-out-his-ass-again-bullshit are not the same size.
Political Science major, weren't you Ace? Would five minutes on Bing have fucking killed you or something? Congrats on your smart military credibility.

Ace baby 42 gallons in a barrel of crude oil; but 55 gallons in a drum of refined gasoline or other petroleum product.

What do you expect when the US elects Jayson Blair as President?
"I was in control from the moment the explosion happened, however I can't be held responsible for why it took so long to stop the leak." Only a Democrat could get away with saying something like that.

Defending his dealings with BP, he says there was a lack of "urgency" regarding efforts to clean up/enforce safety provisions, but none of the "corrupt practices" of the previous administration occurred in the "current administration."
That's ... it's just ...
Wow.

"When I woke up this morning and I’m shaving, and Malia knocks on my bathroom door and she says — did you plug the hole yet Daddy?"
"I reassured her that my Administration was doing everything to remedy the oil spill along with enacting new laws to stop global warming and create green jobs. I also pointed out to Melia that I inherited this mess from the previous administration and their failed policies and corrupt practices. And finally since I found MaliaÂ’s question impertinent and unlike anything that the main stream media would dare to ask me, I snapped my fingers and had a Secret Service agent remove her from the bathroom and placed in Time Out."

At her weekly legislative briefing being televised on C-SPAN right now, Nancy Pelosi is actually blaming the oil spill in the gulf on President Bush, and members of the press corps are actually buying it. This is insanity.
Is it any wonder that this administration has accomplished absolutey nothing productive? Their incompetence has the blessings of the imbeciles in the media. I'm incredulous that the people in the media are that stupid. Argh!!! They're so stupid that it is mind-boggling!!!!!
Posted by: Natasha & Boris at May 27, 2010 12:55 PM (ITzbJ)
First press conference in 310 days and the press conference lasts for over an hour, and yet CNN and FOX show only two 30-second sound bites from that press conference, both of which pertain only to the oild spill in the gulf????? Nothing about the economy. Hothing about Iran. Nothing about about Sestak. Nothing about Korea. Just more tedious bullshit about the oil spill. What is wrong with that picture?
The media aren't worth shit anymore, and we have a useless administration which has accomplished absolutely nothing productive in the past 16 months. That entire administration is the most incompetent administration in the history of this country, and Obame is absolutely useless, also. That empty suit doesn't have any leadership skills, none whatsoever. He is a just a l;azy, useless bullshit artist living like royalty at the taxpayers' expense.

Obama doesn't know if the head of MMS was fired or quit. He can't give a straight answer concerning whether or not Sestak was offered a job to leave the race or not.
