Obama's State Of The Union: Iraq
— DrewM

There was simply too much to put in one post (and no, I won't be going through all of it) but the Iraq part, all two paragraphs of it, were despicable. Not so much for what he said but what he left out.

As we take the fight to al Qaeda, we are responsibly leaving Iraq to its people. As a candidate, I promised that I would end this war, and that is what I am doing as President. We will have all of our combat troops out of Iraq by the end of this August. We will support the Iraqi government as they hold elections, and continue to partner with the Iraqi people to promote regional peace and prosperity. But make no mistake: this war is ending, and all of our troops are coming home.

Tonight, all of our men and women in uniform — in Iraq, Afghanistan, and around the world – must know that they have our respect, our gratitude, and our full support. And just as they must have the resources they need in war, we all have a responsibility to support them when they come home. That is why we made the largest increase in investments for veterans in decades. That is why we are building a 21st century VA. And that is why Michelle has joined with Jill Biden to forge a national commitment to support military families.

The 5 times he used the name Iraq in those paragraphs were the only mentions in the whole speech. What words didn't he use? Victory. Freedom. Or anything that recognized the fruits of the incredible sacrifices millions of men and women in our military and their families made to make it possible.

You see, the war is just "ending". Kind of like a movie or something. Times up, the lights come on, you don't have to go home but you can't stay here.

As I tweeted last night during the speech: "According to Obama the Iraq war is over. Any word on who won?"

Oh and this 'ending'? Yeah, he inherited that from Bush too but you don't hear him mention that do you?

I doubt W. cares much about what this childish little man says or thinks about him. Bush signed up for the big leagues and if Obama can't do anything but bitch about him, well, that's part of the deal. Besides, Bush only looks better by comparison. But for a serving Commander in Chief to fail to acknowledge the victory of American troops is beyond shameful, it's unpardonable and even un-American.

6 That little snit fit over Iraq really highlighted his worst trait – a stubborn refusal to admit error. Obama was against the war in Iraq, so to him the war in Iraq is a bad thing, the facts be damned.

Acknowledging our success in Iraq would force him to admit he was wrong about the war and the surge.  His unwillingness to give credit to the troops who fought and died to secure victory in Iraq is disgraceful.  Of all of the speech's small moments, this was perhaps the smallest.

In the history of this nation, in a time of war, has any president at the state of the union not thanked our military men (and women as applicable) in harm's way?

My son listened to the entire 71 minutes of agonizing bull shit of him blaming "Washington" that he apparently has no connection to just to see if he shouted out to the soldiers, sailors, marines, etc.

I'm starting to think he is blaming George Washington or Washington State or Washington Irving because he is, to a large extent, Washington. Somebody needs to tell him.

He didn't.

So how's that war of necessity going in Afghanistan?  Any word?  Still necessary, or is it a war of choice now?  How's that surge going, or has Bammy pulled the plug on that yet?

Hey military folks, just remember the country loves you, and is grateful for the sacrifices you've made, and celebrates your successes as well as mourns your losses.  Even if this tool doesn't.

President Obama acknowledged deep anger that citizens are feeling while outlining a list of specific steps aimed at improving the nation's fiscal outlook. He also pleaded with Congress to set aside its differences

From the Boston Globe today - I don't think "pleaded" is accurate.

Or anything that recognized the fruits of the incredible sacrifices millions of men and women in our military and their families made to make it possible.

Don't worry - he's got people for that - Mrs. Obama and Mrs. Biden!

24 I'm proud of my young Marine.  However, his POS "commander-in-chief" keeps me awake at night.  My kid had a very interesting discussion with me, which I won't repeat here, regarding his CoC, and the opinion of literally everyone he's come into contact with.  Suffice it to say, he knows what he signed onto and is well prepared to serve his country, and the jackass occupying the Oval Office.

25 I've said it before and I'll say it again, Obama hates the U.S. military.
I've read both his silly books and I've listened to his babblings for more than a year, and I can't point to any "proof" of his attitude, but I genuinely think that he can't stand us (veterans) or them (active duty soldiers).

Very common attitude for academic types.  The whole postmodern philosophy focuses on divorcing symbols from meaning, and then reassigning meaning in which ever way pleases them most.  Which is why they have trouble with the meaning of 'is'.  Jeff Goldstein will be happy to tell you more than you could every possibly want to know about that kind of thing.  Not surprisingly, Chomsky is a big proponent of that crap, as are liberals in general.  It's not lying if the words don't mean anything anyway.

90 I guess he knows his moonbat base would go absolutely berserk if he ever used the words "war" and "victory" in the same sentence. Unnuanced concepts like victory are for the "cowboy" Bush. The evil imperialist Satan is not supposed to even engage in such shameful actions, much less fight to WIN.

Remember when Bush gave the SOTU speech, he would always point out people in the audience and have them recognized by the assembly for their heroism or good works?

Did you notice that the only other people that Obama referred to besides himself during the whole speech were Michelle and Biden?

Not even a single reference to the dear, departed Lion of the Senate, Ted Kennedy.

Obama is redefining narcissism every single day.

Given who's president, I'm not going to hear what I'd like to hear. But even he could have said something like,

"At long last, our nation's combat mission in Iraq is finally accomplished. America will continue to support Iraq, its government and its people, as they hold elections and grow its democracy and increasingly take responsibility for its own security. The men and women in our armed forces served with valor and with honor in Iraq, for which we owe them our gratitude and so much more." Then segue into the VA thing.

Not admitting that the invasion was ever justified, supporting democracy (if only in words), honoring those in the military and taking a cheap shot at Bush. Again, I wouldn't have said it this way but it would've worked for him. Instead, he reprised his role as the know-it-all dad from his Wednesday evening television show.

Heh!  I can only imagaine the "Non-profit Foundation" that he will set up after he's out of office.  He'll donate his Peace Prize money to it, and yeah, he will rake in huge amounts of dough in honorariums and lecture fees.  He's going to make our other First Black President look like a piker and low level grifter.  It will all be entertaining to watch as Bill Clinton already loathes Obama, and once Teh Bamster starts poaching off Clinton donors, that's when the real fun will start!

That pompous ass made another comment near the beginning of his speech that was very telling, a comment to the effect that he wasn't elected to comply with the wishes of the people, but to do what he determined to be the right thing to do, from which you can draw your own conclusions.

That degenerate already considers himself and his wife to be annointed royalty, and he has the mindset of a dictator, who even regards members of his own party condescendingly, all of which is bizzare, considering that he is an incompetent, dense, obtuse, shallow and incredibly stupid empty suit without the credentials to be POTUS. I hope that you realize that this country is now being run by a madman.

Obama also disgracefully failed to mention the pullout of the Marines from al-Anbar province leaving behind a (for the middle east anyway) a near-model for safe civil Iraqi society.

The fact that the Teleprompter did not mention this was a slap in the face to the Marines. Disgraceful but not the least bit surprising.

Re: the precedent's relationship with the military

Watch what he tries to do vis a vis the GI Bill and college funding.  It's already been floated here in IL -- the IL State Veteran's Grant stays, but only if taxes are raised and/or the colleges have to eat the cost of the program (which is unlikely to almost impossible).  The need based grants are not touched because "going to college is a right for every Illinoisian!!!".  Essentially the need based grants will continue to be funded because it's social justice (and those grants are usually a bogus waste of time -- nobody is getting their education paid in total by those grants, not even paid partially), but there need to be budget cuts because the taxpayers need a break...so the veteran's grants have to go.

I'm pretty sure mister chicken molester is going to try that one on a national level -- military don't need to be getting any free education at the taxpayer's expense..not when we have poor people in real need of an education.  That'll be the approach.  They've already scouted the territory with the comments about military getting free, government healthcare, and then the payroll freezes -- the meme about the military being one of the biggest social welfare/socialist organizations out there has already been given its marching orders for some time now (if the ravings of the lefties on my local paper site are to be believed); started a couple months back and the rhetoric has ramped up since.

144 -- I think many in the military should be expecting this.  The tone seems to be among quite a few that they fully expect any and all promises and reassurances made to them completely broken, and worse, with the public's approval (or at least the public will do nothing to stop it).

This is not the sort of thing one really wants one's military thinking.

The military protects the civilians, but we civilians need to protect our military too -- that's the take away from me at least.
