Obama's TSA Nominee Withdraws
— DrewM

First concrete fallout from Scott Brown victory?

The Obama administration's choice to lead the struggling Transportation Security Administration withdrew his name from consideration Wednesday, just weeks after revelations that he had provided misleading information to Congress prompted several Republicans to suggest his nomination would not move forward without a fight.

Erroll Southers, a former FBI agent and homeland security specialist, was presented as a leader who would improve the TSA's sprawling operations and improve passenger screening to prevent such attacks as the attempted Christmas Day bombing of a Detroit-bound airliner.

..."It is apparent that this path has been obstructed by political ideology," he said. "My nomination has become a lightning rod for those who have chosen to push a political agenda at the risk of the safety and security of the American people. This partisan climate is unacceptable and I refuse to allow myself to remain part of their dialogue."

Oh shove it up your ass. There were plenty of substantive reasons to vote against this guy, including his past history of breaking privacy rules (perhaps even laws), the possibility he'd support unionizing TSA workers and oh yeah, a rather nuanced view of the nature of the threats he'd be facing at TSA.

Getting cloture on his nomination was going to be a challenge before last night, this morning it likely became impossible.

Buh-bye.

Check.

Harry Reid wants to rush through his confirmation without any hearings.

Check.

Come to find out this proposed TSA head wanted to unionize TSA workers, potentially allowing for our national airport security to be held hostage to union leader thugs who are demanding better snack machines for the TSA break rooms

Check.

Jim DeMint wants to ask some questions, which is his job to do in his role as committee ranking member.

Check

Unlike most corncob smokin', cousin pokin', chicken chokin' rednecks who have idiot cousins, I've only got a liberal sister in San Francisco. It's esssentially the same thing.

She keeps the tube tuned to CNN with occasional hits from MSNBC.  That stuff will make you go deaf, dumb and blind with hair on your palms.

Anyhoo, right after the PantyBomber lit the damp squib on Christmas Day, I got a note from said liberal sister saying that a "Senator Dimwit" had prevented Obama's TSA nominee from being confirmed and so we were all in great parallel.  I gather that "Dimwit" is the favorite name for Senator DeMint on all them there sophisticated CNN and MSNBC cable news shows. Course my dear Sis hadn't figured out that our New Messiah had failed to nominate anyone for the TSA vacancy until September.  Old Senator Dimwit had only held things up for 2 months whilst Captain Zero had delayed things for 9 months.

Well long about this time, other Senators had figured out that Erroll Southers was giving them the old shuck and jive, and had been "less than candid" in his testimony before the Senate.  All of a sudden there were half a dozen other Senators who joined "Senator Dimwit" in putting a "hold" on Southers' nomination. After that it only took another two and a half weeks for Southers to become road kill looking up at the underside of the Obama bus.

All of which proves that Obama can and will nominate some goofy sacks of shit for various posts, and the Senate will confirm most of them--but if you're caught lying  to the Senators, well, you'll probably become "road kill".

93 @65: I don't believe this is an actual copy. It lacks a sufficient number of "I"s and "My"s to be viewed as authentic. Perhaps you received this from Lucy Ramirez?

94 You know, they should have had "solid B+" below F in that grade list.

That's what I would have picked.

95 O/T: Palin to campaign for McCain. She is now dead to me.

Posted by: Barbarian at January 20, 2010 09:38 AM (EL+OC)

96 I gues the B+ the libs hand out at school is in actuallity D-ish work.

97 Dingy Harry has the look of an old perv hanging out around an elementary school in his old beat up Crown Vic, eyes darting nervously up and down the street, just waiting for school to let out.  But that's just me.

98 dananjcon, I'm inclined to give Hillbuzz some credit this time for their good work in the Brown campaign.

99 Anyhoo, right after the PantyBomber lit the damp squib on Christmas Day, I got a note from said liberal sister saying that a "Senator Dimwit" had prevented Obama's TSA nominee from being confirmed and so we were all in great parallel.

If your sister ever dumped a police officer boyfriend, would she be all right with it if he ran checks on her new boyfriends?

Hey Really GROOVY CIGARETTE SMOKING MARXIST NEARLY REAL FAKE PRESIDENT McDIMWIT!!

This tea bag was unprecedented!

102 Jane D'oh 100 , he reminds me of the principal of a failing school. I don't get the "perv" vibe. I get the "uninspired, dour hack and loser" vibe.

104 I wonder how many packs of Marlboros Barry smoked yesterday.  I bet he's really enjoying the anniversary of his blessed immaculation.  Ah, jeez, am I the only one who still feels like dipping today?

Posted by: Peaches at January 20, 2010 09:42 AM (9Wv2j)

105 Dip away, Peaches.  My nips are still raw.

Front page of Politico had a piece on the Obamas giving up Wednesday night cocktail parties.  The humanity!

107 85 I don't know why she's upset. The system worked like it was supposed to. They read him his rights on the spot (or did they)?

108 101 I agree, just snarking on their lack of sense of humor.

Posted by: dananjcon at January 20, 2010 09:48 AM (pr+up)

109 No way, Jane.  The haters are trampling on his partying?  That is just so wrong.  It's not like he's good at anything else.

110 Marlboro's??? C'mon, Opie is a KOOOOOOOOL smoker.

111 O/T: Palin to campaign for McCain. She is now dead to me.

Agreed!  And I didn't really care for the way she threw her support to Brown, uh, late last night.  And I think her tv gig is a huge mistake.

Posted by: Peaches at January 20, 2010 09:50 AM (9Wv2j)

112 I'm fine with Palin campaigning for McCain - it sends a pretty clear signal that the likes of Steve Schmidt should STFU since McCain himself obviously has no problems with her.

113 114 O/T: Palin to campaign for McCain. She is now dead to me.

Agreed!  And I didn't really care for the way she threw her support to Brown, uh, late last night.  And I think her tv gig is a huge mistake.

a) That she campaigns for McCain doesn't surprise me.  She's said good things about him even when he hasn't returned the favor.  She feels as if she owes him for giving her national prominence.  It's probably not the best idea, given that it's a reasonably contested primary, but that's the way Palin rolls.

b) I have no doubt that she reached out to the Brown people offering help if they wanted it.  It was very wise that she was not available to be demagogued, even if the libs did try.  Her support would have been counterproductive.

c) I'm not a big fan of Palin 2012, so I think the TV gig is a good idea for her.  They'll ease her in and eventually, she'll be debating some of their more rational liberals.

Agreed on all points

115 I'm actually a little sketchy on the TV thing. I think sdhe does best when she is outside of the "inner circle" so to speak.

Posted by: jcjimi at January 20, 2010 10:04 AM (NEj2I)

116 116  117  I am more than happy to be wrong about this, because I really like Sarah.  And you make excellent points, AmishDude.  I, too, am very uneasy with all the Palin 2012 talk, I think that would be a fatal mistake.

117 I gotta throw that sock away, it's nasty.

"It is apparent that this path has been obstructed by the matrices of political ideology.  His nomination has become a lightning rod for those who have chosen to push agreement between subject and verb.  This partisan climate is unacceptable and I refuse to allow myself to remain part of their dialogue which is free of inappropriately used big words."

122 Erroll Southers, a former FBI agent and homeland security specialist, was presented as a leader who would improve the TSA's sprawling operations and improve passenger screening to prevent such attacks as the attempted Christmas Day bombing of a Detroit-bound airliner.
