— DrewM Um. really?
A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey of likely voters finds Obama with 42% support and Paul with 41% of the vote. Eleven percent (11%) prefer some other candidate, and six percent (6%) are undecided.Ask the Political Class, though, and itÂ’s a blowout. While 58% of Mainstream voters favor Paul, 95% of the Political Class vote for Obama.
But Republican voters also have decidedly mixed feelings about Paul, who has been an outspoken critic of the party establishment.
Obama earns 79% support from Democrats, but Paul gets just 66% of GOP votes. Voters not affiliated with either major party give Paul a 47% to 28% edge over the president.
Paul, a anti-big government libertarian who engenders unusually strong feelings among his supporters, was an unsuccessful candidate for the Republican presidential nomination in 2008. But he continues to have a solid following, especially in the growing Tea Party movement.
Drudge was teasing this but I thought it was going to be some wacky polling group we'd never heard of.
I imagine this is just an Anybody but Obama thing that simply has Paul's name in the "anybody" slot. I mean, if I got a call asking, "In a match up between Ron Paul and Barack Obama, who would you vote for?" I guess I'd say Paul. But even knowing I'd never face that in reality, I'd shower for awhile. A long time actually.
I don't get why Rasmussen chose to poll Paul in that slot. There's just no one in the world who honestly believes this is even within the realm of possibility which will make this poll and other ones he releases easier to dismiss.
For some context, Michael Barone explains why Rasumussen polls tend to be more Republican friendly.

Bwhahahah! And from Public Policy Polling, it gets even better:
Americans are now pretty evenly divided about whether they would rather have Barack Obama or George W. Bush in the White House. 48% prefer Obama while 46% say they would rather have the old President back.

It will be interesting to see how the MSM spins this. They will want to "shepherd" the GOP primary voters into nominating the most defeatable candidate in 2012- the same way they did in 2008. Ron Paul and Huckabee are probably at the top of their short list.

Pelosi/Reid/Obama's profligate spending will soon compel this nation into a dramatically cheaper isolationist foreign policy and defense posture. By the end of Ogabe's term, we'll be visibly retreating and pulling back, because there simply won't be any money to continue on.
Long term, that will be a disaster of course, but it dovetails nicely with Her Doktor's thinking in the short term.

Bingo. Or put another way, Ron Paul's dangerous ideas have support of no other elected republicans and next to no other Americans, while Obama's dangerous ideas have the support of the majority of the other branches of gov't (hopefully not so in 2012, but nearly), most appointed beaurocrats and gov't lawyers, regulators, etc., and a large minority of the populace. Paul Bashers: get real and face the fact that he has been spot on about issues at home.

That rests the case for, and against, Ron Paul.

Perhaps they thought better of it while contemplating the prospect of a nationwide revolt by all businesses who are simply complying with disclosure laws and accounting principles, and telling the truth about the burden of the DemsÂ’ crushing mandates.

As opposed to Obama's stagflationary paper currency? I'm not so sure bringing back a gold standard wouldn't be bad. Even the leftists had their Bretton Woods.

OT: Obama's nuke summit is a dud in the foreign press (surprise, surprise).
Look for the story in the yellow box.
Doesn't matter, as Iran's going nuclear with in a month (but they won't have a nuke "for a year", sure).
In the end, there will be only chaos.

And you run a modern, multi-trillion dollar economy on the gold standard...how?
Until 1971 we did (in inflation adjusted dollars--thanks paper currency!--we had a multi-trillion dollar economy then too).
Now gold standards are not perfect I grant you--they tend to have bank panics every 20 odd years. But as I watch the Obamunist Porkulus and now Socialized Medicine endgame play out, I can only see the current course ending in stagflation. I don't know if it will exceed the 1970's, but if it does, we are Weimar Republic screwed.

Guess what? Bretton Woods was not the gold standard. It was the dollar pegged to a fixed price of gold (35 bucks). And the demands of the world economy overwhlemed it. It fell apart.
So referencing a failure from 40 years ago is not going to go down in my books as an argument in favor of anything....

You can't (at least without a massive revaluation of currency) because there's not enough gold in the world. What you could do, though, is base currency on a basket-of-goods weighted toward gold and other precious metals.
My problem with Paul isn't his policy positions, it's his conspiracy-mongering. You could make a damn good argument to end the Fed without resorting to crackpot theories about evil international Jew bankers. You can be against the Iraq war without saying 9-11 was an inside job and endosring Cynthia McKinny.
The other thing that pisses me off about Paul is that he loads every spending bill up with pork for his district and then votes against it, because he knows it would pass anyway.

Because, to pay for the Great Society, LBJ basically printed money, as well as raising taxes. Foreign investors saw what was coming and redeemed their dollars for gold. What is so surprising about that?

Again, I will repeat. Ron Paul's foreign policy is crackpot, and because that is important, he should never be elected to any office that even remotely deals with it. Which means frankly he shouldn't be in the House either.
But those of you who wanted "Compassionate" conservatism, you Bushyrovies who thought you could create the "permanent Republican majority" by handing out entitlement goodies, or by Hispandering and letting the borders go, hey, who created Ron Paul? In effect, YOU did.
Ron Paul's strength is that he was in opposition to the hash the GOP Bushyrovie establishment was dishing out.

Gross oversimplification. You (and Paul) assume that the U.S. economy exists in a vacuum. Books have been written on the factors that led to Bretton Woods demise and those factors were not limited to American economic policies.

What Curmudgeon said. Not being an economic souper-genius I can't say whether or not a return to a commodity-backed currency is the right thing or even possible at this time, but I would like our government to behave as though our currency were commodity-backed and stop debasing the dollar. I think Paul is on the money with his move to audit the Fed and it should be noted that he is not the only politician who wants this. He wants to cut both the size and scope of government, and yes, I have heard all of the "he puts in for earmarks" talk but none other than Tom Coburn has shot that down.
I part with Ron Paul on the vast majority of his foreign policy beliefs. There was a time when the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans were our best defenses, but the ability to produce a backpack-sized nuclear device renders oceans moot. Additionally, in the past nation states went to war to acquire territory and resources; today, we have enemies who are not formal nation states and who care nothing about conquest but only destruction.
I freely admit that a good number of his supporters creep me out.
I don't think Ron Paul would be the best choice but he is a far sight better than the current occupant, though I suspect that this is irrelevant as I don't believe he has a chance to win the nomination.

For a time, we did have a "Volcker standard" and a "Greenspan standard", both of whom as Fed chiefs were said to make decisions to raise or lower interest rates based upon what gold and other precious metals were doing. A "sort-of-gold standard".
But it looks like Demunist fiscal policy will overwhelm that and Bernanke is throwing in the towel. Perhaps he is legitimately afraid of deflation, but I'm betting on stagflation.

That explains why we need a good navy, but I will need more elaboration on why that requires foreign army bases that are not there for the purpose of supporting current war operations. And since China is building war ships, why not let them look after their own trade interests? The Europeans should be quite capable as well. And the Russians. Besides - we still have a massive trade deficit, and aside from energy (and that's debatable) we don't import anything we can't make ourselves (albeit at higher cost). Some minor trade disruption might not be all bad.
Let someone else police up the world. I don't fall into the Ron Paul crowd, but our current levels of military commitments around the globe are probably unsustainable. Remember how Reagan killed the USSR - he forced them to spend so much on their war machine that it bankrupted them. Let's not do that to ourselves. Keep the nukes in top working condition, develop missle defense, keep up anti-terror operations. Aside from that, worry about our own soil. We could use a few divisions on our souther border - we're being actively invaded through it at this very moment.

I'm ambivalent about Ron Paul. But he is not a racist. About 25 years ago, a member of his staff published an opinion piece of his own in Ron Paul's newsletter without Ron Paul's permission, and for which Ron Paul apologized profusely at the time, and for which he has since apologized on several other occasions, also.
So to hold that against him is disingenuous, mean and petty, and a stretch, also. Ron Paul is perhaps a wee bit eccentric on foreign policy. But he seems to be a decent guy, more conservative on some domestic issues than many Republicans are, and he sticks to his principles, unlike some Republicans, also. I don't always agree with the man, but I respect him. A racist? That is bullshit.
