— DrewM A couple of things...
It's old, 1999, and she's obviously changed her mind.
Still, it's not quite the kind of thing a candidate wants to have to talk about or having people talking about in general.
Added bonus...Bill Maher says he has more unaired clips of her from back in the day and he'll be playing them once a week unless O'Donnell agrees to come on his HBO show.
What could go wrong?
O'Donnell has canceled her scheduled appearances on Face the Nation and Fox News Sunday. That may or not be related to this disclosure but it's not a good thing.
I know it's not going to change the minds of a lot of her supporters but obviously this isn't gong to help with actual voters in Delaware. A candidate who is relatively unknown and already comes with some baggage needs to make voters more comfortable with them not less. She needs to be focusing on the issues and not whether or not she was a witch. And personally, I don't think Maher is bluffing. I'm sure the clips with be equally stupid but also equally distracting.
This is the vetting thing Ace was talking about. You can get by without this stuff coming out when you are the sacrificial lamb against Joe Biden. When you are a national symbol of a movement? Not so much.
I will also say this...she's getting far more vetting than Obama ever did. It's not right and it's not fair but it is reality.
At some point it becomes too much and voters either roll their eyes and say they don't care about this unending parade of embarrassing news and support her while others will hear it all and simply are impervious to her policy message.
The question is, which group is bigger?

Yeah, premiums will go up for a number of Americans - costs will go up for everybody.
However, once the "subsidy" checks kick in (come 2013), the "price" of health-care will be lower for core Democratic voters. This is the big trick of this monstrosity - it effectively shifts the cost of healthcare completely to the upper middle class while, at the same time, providing another sacred cow entitlement to over 50% of Americans.
If Obamacare isn't repealed prior to enactment, it will be the final nail in the United States' coffin. Once 52-53% of the population starts getting government-subsidized healthcare, it's over.

She could arrange with an impressive preacher friend for a new confirmation in Christ this Sunday. Perhaps Billy Graham's son?
All in all, though, she hung out with "those" people. So, she understands all sorts. That's a plus. She has the New Age vote.

One Villager: Well, we did do the nose.

Villager: And the Hat. But she's a witch!
Villagers: Yeah! Burn her! Burn! Burn her!

You are eventually going to say something stupid and it will come back to bite you. Yes, you need to go on the Sunday shows (don't cancel that stuff), but if a guy like Maher is actually a friend of yours, you are doing something wrong (yes, I'm talking to you too Ann Coulter).
This is like the lonely studious girl in any 80s movie trying to look cool by hanging around and sucking up to the cliquish popular chicks who are just going to use her and stab her in the back. Don't do it.

Wait - Democrats are free thinkers so they will be more inclined to vote for her
Fiscal Conservatives/ Social Liberals are free thinkers so they will be more inclined to vote for her.
Delaware doesn't have enough bitter clinger Social Conservatives to matter, so our opposition won't hurt her.
So I don't see how this can matter.
Posted by: Oldcat at September 18, 2010 11:14 AM (Jp/J9)
So, this is relevant how? Is she currently a witch? DDid she perform sacrifices or did she do something kind of dumb? Young adults do a lot of dumb shit, yet that isn't who they are years later.
Note that while the clip itself is 11 years old, she doesn't say WHEN this happened. I wonder why the clip doesn't show that; I'm betting that the 'when' is in it and Maher doesn't want to play it.
Are you certain it was 'not vetted' and instead 'vetted but it doesn't matter because it was way in the past'?
As for Bill Maher, she shouldn't go on his show. That lying sack of shit is going to release the clips, regardless.

She did something really stupid, religiously, as a kid and then, when she matured, she became Born Again and renounced her past actions. I'm not seeing any problems here.
I know quite a few people who did stupid stuff like that, specifically with people who turned to various forms of outsider religions such as Wicca, who later matured a bit and became hardcore Christians.
The admission that she did something like that as a kid probably helps her with the youth vote, who likely connects with that kind of behavior.
Maher pulling this clip out of his ass also comes across as a blatantly partisan tactic considering he's outright blackmailing her to appear on his show and there are a number of infamous clips known to exist of some other politicians which will never see the light of day.

There's a new fad all the kids are into these days: it's called providing 'proof' and 'evidence'. There is plenty of both for the assertion that ACORN was a corrupt organization and that Communism is the worst ideology to ever grace the planet. There is not a whole lot of it to suggest that Obama is a Muslim, aside from some circumstantial crap. If you honestly believe Obama is a Muslim you are a conspiracy theorist. 80% of the country agrees with me on this one, so I don't really feel like I have to justify myself to you.

When a candidate admits to marijuana and cocaine use, and is a vociferous opponent of the "War on Drugs", that's relevant.
When a candidate admits to slatternly and deviant behavior, and has since utterly repudiated said behavior, her past is not just irrelevant it's evidence that she understands opposing positions and came to her position on the basis of experience.

I'm not a big fan of O'Donnell, but this story is rather ridiculous. She experimented with witchcraft, then had a "Road to Damascus" experience. This also explains why she is so socially conservative in some areas. I actually think this would win her more votes among certain segments of the population.
But for Heaven's sake, Castle lost, O'Donnell won. The pundits & political scientists can keep using their models to predict election results (since that's their job, obviously), but fighting over the primary isn't going to do us any good. It's over.

Yeah, that's the ticket. Its also about as truthful as 99% of the crap that gets published about her.

Aw, come on. Go ahead and rave about her canceling, but it's only fair - at the same time - to point out that she canceled in order to attend previously scheduled events. Events the staffer who agreed to the Sunday shows did not know about. O'Donnell had six staffers at the time - NO scheduler. OK, they should be better organized, but this is still not how you make it look - that she's running scared from the shows. Simply not true.

It's what the public sees that matters, not what the people who want CO'D to win think. Add this to some of the other allegations about her, proven/provable or not, and "normal" (unaware) voters won't want to be bothered. It's that simple.

No conservative candidate should ever do an interview on any of the MFM shows without an ironclad contract that no editing of the answers will be done.
Everyone said the same shit about Sarah Palin after her interview on ABC but then we later found out the lying bastards had traded answers between questions to make her look stupid. Some people don't know that and they still to this day talk about how "unprepared for that interview" she was.
Angle and Paul have the solution to that bullshit now, don't do interviews on shows run by lying assholes. The worst they can do is accuse you of avoiding them.
In the meantime you go on on shows that are more honest. Chris Wallace is a liberal asshole but I don't think that Fox would allow him to actually do editing that traded answers between questions. Other bad editing yes, but not as dishonest as that.

The salient question Drew is when you will stop writing in the O'Donnell pejorative. Hell . . . Sinatra sang about witchcraft and Obama spoke of reptilian brain lobes. And . . . drum roll here . . . Mr. Obama and the 111th Congress passed and signed Obamacare into law against the will of the people whilst overtaking the entire private student loan market . . . and have sued the State of Arizona in Federal Court over a legislative action promulgated and passed by the Arizona legislature. On top of attempting to try KSM within the United States Civilian Court system.
And now on to Bill Maher . . . Mr. Maher is the one who equated retarded children to dogs on his show and stated terrorists flying planes into buildings on suicide missions were not cowards in the true sense of the word . . . and even went so far as to suggest the United States military were the cowards since they fire missiles.
So should we concern ourselves as to what Mr. Maher may have up his sleeve or should we perhaps focus on the subject matter of the nation and whether Ms. O'Donnell will be more in line with supporting a constitutional form of a representative republic?
Drew, we had a dust up earlier this week and you are attempting to inject the same milquetoast (oh, no O'Donnell) approach into the equation . . . and now your best source of problematic O'Donnell fodder is centered on what Bill Maher may decide to do and how his influence may jeopardize C'OD.
When Reagan ran . . . I suppose you would have been concerned over the Bedtime for Bonzo movie - I can imagine how you would have aired your concern over as much . . . . " People . . . there is a rumor that Reagan may run for president . . . but did you know he was in the Bedtime for Bonzo flick . . . you know the one with the chimpanzee. . . Be aware because Eric Sevareid is coming out with a special on this . . . be afraid, be very afraid.
Drew . . . the point is over ideological content and the constitutional disposition of the country for this is it . . .
We buy you books and all you do is eat their covers.
Buck up!

A couple of things...
It's old, 1999, and she's obviously changed her mind.
Eh, this statement is factually acurate, but misleading. Yeah, the tape is from 1999, but she isn't saying that in 1999 she was dating witches. She is talking about dating witches about 10 years prior to that.
So yeah, about twenty years ago she went on a date with a witch. Kinda like Fairuza Balk The Craft.
Which is kinda hot...
Bunk.
Posted by: ed at September 18, 2010 12:25 PM (Zsqn4)
I guess I don't see what the big deal is. She was being kind of "girlish" and "flirty" and trying to be OUTRAGEOUS on a COMEDY SHOW... and she was kind of giggling the whole time.
She never said she "was a witch" - she only said that she "dabbled in witchcraft" by having hung out a few times with kooky acquaintances who considered themselves witches, and she giggled the whole time she talked about it - making it clear the SHE never joined up with them -- only that she was around them at times. Heck if she liked what they did and believed in that stuff, she probably would have joined up in a coven herslef, but did she? Hell, no.
And to me, she looked like she was trying to get attention on the show and that was about the most "outrageous" claim to fame that she could think up to brag about -- to get attention. I don't think it even looks like she is really telling the truth - it looks like she is exaggerating -- again -- to get attention from the other folks on the show. Period.
Everyone of us has run into a couple of theatrical or "goth like" people who claimed to be "witches" etc. Like some dorm mates who were way into playing fanasy games or who hung around the dorm or school cafeteria or were present at social functions or worked at the local theater and went to coffee with the rest of the sat at our table at lunchtime and bragged about how they were "into magic" etc. So they went to DragonCon and played fantasy games and were into the Harry Potter stuff - before there was a Harry Potter. Big deal. That doesn't make the rest of the school dorm "witches" also.
The only bad thing is her poor word choice -- calling it "dabbling" when she clearly wasn't into it herself.
If she can get out there fast and explain it away, it won't last -- but if she hides from it then it could do some damage and make her look kooky.
BUT, in that video she looks so YOUNG, you can hardly recognize her..so it's not like this happened last year. And if she is talking about something she ran into at High School - please!
Yeah, i don't think it HELPS her, but it may not hurt her if she explains that she was goofing around exaggerating on a COMEDY SHOW.

One thing people forget is that only DE citizens will be voting in November for DE elections. Do you think this is actually the first time anyone in DE has ever heard this shit? IIRC, she has lived there for a long time. It's a very small state. Kind of like a 'small world' in related industries that span the entire nation/world. Shit gets around pretty damn quickly. It's incredibly hard to hide.
She was smart to cancel the morning shows to, instead, interact with actual people who will be voting. She has a very limited amount of time to travel the state for meet & greets. That is a hell of a lot more important than speaking to a Sunday morning, national pundit farce. How many of her potential voters will be in church or doing other more important things? Meeting a candidate face to face, and having the ability to speak with them first hand is a much smarter strategy.
Those that want to continue to beat up on her, most of you won't be voting for her, nor do you have the ability. Fine, she's not your choice, but you're giving ammunition to the enemy. Real smart...effin' brilliant.

Anyway, Team O'Donnell needs to spend the weekend learning political Jiu Jitsu, and no sleep. Things like this can be taken away from the left pretty easily, especially with as much of a joke as Maher is - a few wisecracks about voodoo, rituals and "a little pagan on the side" or whatever, combined with either completely ignoring Maher or making him part of the joke (no going on his show in either case), could disarm this and the next piece of irrelevancy he wants to throw out.
Ironically, Rove would be good at this.
I wonder what would happen if she called him and said, "Okay, so you think I wasn't the best pick, but I'm here now. What can I do better here?"
Give someone an opportunity to *invest* themselves in you. Works wonders. Cognitive dissonance is a powerful force.

The Devil in Hell we're told was chained
A thousand years he there remained
He neither complain nor did he groan
But was determined to start a Hell of his own
Where he could torment the souls of men
Without being chained in a prison pen
So he asked the Lord if he had on hand
Anything left when he made this land
The Lord said yes there's a plenty on hand
But I left it down by the Rio Grande
The fact is ol' boy the stuff is so poor
I don't think you could use it as the Hell anymore
But the Devil went down to look at the truck
And said if he took it as a gift he was stuck
For after lookin' that over carefully and well
He said this place is too dry for Hell
But in order to get it off his hand
The Lord promised the Devil to water the land
So trade was closed and deed was given
And the Lord went back to his home in Heaven
And the Devil said now I got all what's needed
To make it good Hell and he succeeded
And he called it poontang!

The vast majority of us have done wacky things. I spent years reading New Age and Witchcraft garbage. Doing that REVEALED to me that it was garbage.
Those of us who understand what's what, typically look back on those wacky things as PART of what led us to where we are - either because of the consequences or the later realization of how wacky it really was.
People don't magically incarnate as "liberals" or "conservatives". They mature from the former into the latter. I'll happily cop to ANYTHING I did 11 years ago because I know it was part of what opened my eyes to what's destroying our culture now. O'Donnell should do the same, IMHO.

Sometimes I wonder why anyone would ever want to serve in public office knowing that everything they have ever done or said will be aired on TV; Especially someone who hasn't been groomed to be a politician. We talk about wanting regular people to run for office. "Regular" people make mistakes in their lives, they learn and discover things, sometimes stupid, things as they grow up, and hopefully come to a point where they are functioning adults. Can you imagine politicians in 10- 20 years from now having all their pictures and videos from facebook and myspace aired all over TV. Should be fun.

The reason why the news shows want her is so they can run Maher clips during the O'Donnell interview and then run the camera up tight for the close-up in order to catch (hopefully) some flop sweat over stuff she said a dozen years ago. Nothing about current events, policy, or even campaign chit-chat. Just raw character assassination. That's why Fox wanted Rover there, to mop up the blood.

For those who want to know why O'Donnell was on Mahrer's show,Maragert Carlson column today explains it was due to her SALT connecton:
O'Donnell remains blissfully unperturbed before the camera. Back when she headed up SALT (Savior's Alliance for Lifting the Truth), she was a guest multiple times on Bill Maher's show Politically Incorrect. She blithely ignored the reaction of the audience and other guests who hooted when she said she wouldn't lie to Hitler even to save a Jew hiding in her house and that sex was for procreation only, and that today's youth was going to hell in a handbasket. By flirting with and turning to Maher, she kept him in her corner. He may have been using her as grist for his mill but was not immune to her charm, recognizing the degree to which the camera loved her.

What do you want? People to just mindlessly line up behind whatever shit candidate is put forward, refusing to acknowledge how bad the situation is? This is like blaming the 2008 election on everyone who criticized McCain as a weak candidate or called him a Rhino.

I could be wrong, but does anyone here notice the unprecedented trolling by "moderates" here that supported Castle
Or it could be that frustrated "moderates", baffled at how reason failed to penetrate the minds of the O'Donnell fanclub, are now pouncing on these revelations like a cat with a ball of yarn.

I'm thinking 0.
Thing that really strikes me is that we're willing to take a candidate with many faults just because she isn't that other guy. Castle deserved to lose the election, because he was a bad senator & far from conservative, but I think it should be acknowledged that O'Donnell isn't the best candidate. Nevertheless, she won, & the voters in Delaware have a choice in November. Let's see what they decide.

Both candidates were technically "weak." We're past that. I want people in Delaware - I'm in PA so I don't matter - to vote for the conservative before the libtard. Unless Marty McFly is around with his flux capacitor, we go with the hand we're dealt.

She declined that invitation, because she was doing other shows that day/night. O'Reilly tapes @ 5:00pm. She had other obligations.
Frankly, the only ones she has to convince are DE voters. Not those that have no vote in DE elections.
I care just as much as anyone about who serves in the Senate, but I don't have a say in DE. We can all bitch for whatever side we are on, but in the end, the primary is over. If people really give a shit about taking the Senate, maybe it would be best if we don't work to shoot ourselves in the foot over something that wasn't our decision to make. It was DEs, and they, so far, have made it for the Republican candidate of their choice.
Spreading crap about their candidate won't change the primary votes, but it could damn sure change the general votes, so if that is what you want, have at it.

Wicca is considered witchcraft, and the Federal Bureau of Prisons accepts it as a religious concept, and allows Wicca services at Federal penal institutions. Many state institutions also follow the Federal example.
So if the DOD agrees it's an acceptable religious practice, it has been effectively mainstreamed. Except if you're conservative?

Well heck, if we start accepting someone who pretended to be a witch back when she was in her 20's, that would make us......*heads explode*
And just how many of the Dem's supporters are STILL pretending to be witches, even into middle age? Maher just wants to get ratings, and O'Donnell is the hottest ticket out there right now - that's all this is, and we would do well to just ignore his pathetic bleating......

There's a big fucking difference between a Charlie Rangel or Eleanor Holmes Norton and a Mike Castle. Mike Castle had the 70% approval rating he had because everyone knew him and they knew what he was about. His votes may have sucked from time to time but he wasn't a hack in it for himself. If he was he'd have switched to the Senate long ago.
How many times have you ever heard anything about Mike Castle before this primary?
On Cap and Trade, the only difference was we paid for Castle and the other two Democratic votes cost us nothing.
And I don't think being ineffectual in your career is a good reason to get promoted. Quite the reverse.

Instead of feeding Bildo the Dildo's ego and giving him the opportunity to derail her PERFECTLY VALID campaign, why don't we be stronger than that and support her MESSAGE and CONSERVATISM. I hope O'Donnell is tougher than that, tougher than you, and ignores him completely.
Oh, and moonrocks...the primaries are over. Get over the asshole RINO-whining shit for now and start backing people, or fuck off. This tongue clucking and chin stroking is for pussies. Besides, it's not time for that, it's time to get to work.

The RÂ’s have held both houses of Congress a total of 6 years since 1945. The Dems have had both houses 22 of those years.

Why did anyone give a shit about some racist radical church Barack Obama went to 10 years ago? 'Cause it was a long time ago, ya know? He's grown up since then! All that matters is how much CHANGE he will bring to Washington!
What difference does it make that 15 years ago Mitt Romney told someone he thought a woman has a right to an abortion. 'Cause it was a long time ago, ya know? He's like, totally pro-life now!
Posted by: rockmom at September 18, 2010 04:51 PM (w/gVZ)
Let's see, because dating wiccans and dabbling in witch craft TWENTY years ago when you were barely an adult, and since then NOT engaging in it (actually engaging in the opposite) is pretty much proof that you have changed.
Similarly, a lot of us thought differently about abortion when we were younger. And have totally changed our minds since. Mitt's flip-flop isn't unheard of nor even uncommon.
Obama sat in that church for years, and, when asked about what he heard there, lied by saying he didn't hear it. And he never did say 'what was happening there was wrong.' Oh, it's also consistent with his behavior over the years and follows with who his best buds are both then and now.
On top of that, it was only discussed when someone UNEARTHED it. Unlike Christine, who admitted what she did years ago.
But I'm sure you can't see the difference, given that you were totally in the tank for Castle, being an 'ex-lobbyist for the banking industry' yourself, I believe you said on hotair. You thought Castle was great because of his ties to the banking industry. Haven't you actually met him when you were a lobbyist?
Proof that you aren't about 'conservatism', but ARE about YOUR friends maintaining power, I'm guessing so you can continue to eat at the government trough while the country goes into the shitter. "Hey, as long as I get mine!"
And now you understand why some of us are on RINO hunts.

Notice how DrewM. presents the post without any commentary offered in O'Donnell's defense.
He could contrast the revelations O'Donnell freely made on national TV about her past with Obama's admittted Cocaine and Marijuana use, and how he was defended to the hilt by the MFM.
He could have pointed to Barney Frank's running a male prostitution ring from his apartmartment.
Did Chappaquidick kill Ted Kennedy's career?
He didn't mention any thing like this in his post because that would have been defending O'Donnell. Whereas, the point of this post was to trash her, destroy her chances for winning that seat while saying "I told you so".
DrewM, you are a lowly coward.

Rand Paul abducted O'Donnell and forced her to worship Aqua Buddha.
IMHO canceling her talk show appearances is worse than her dabbling in witchcraft.
Besides, it's not like this kind of shit us unprecedented:
- "You're absolutely right that John McCain has not talked about my Muslim faith," (with pictures) - Barack Obama
- "The man I met more than 20 years ago is a man who helped introduce me to my Christian faith, a man who spoke to me about our obligations to love one another, to care for the sick, and lift up the poor. I can no more disown him than I can disown the black community." - Barack Obama on Rev. Wright.
- "Have you heard any new jokes about Chappaquiddick?"- Ted Kennedy
And to be fair and balanced:
- "That's what we have to make sure that we're praying for, that there is a plan and that that plan is God's plan."- Sarah Palin, at Wasilla Assembly of God, on the Iraq War
- GW Bush's DUI
The problem here is not so much what she did, it's that stuff like this only gets spun up by the media if it's a Republican.

Republicans aren't that bad at winning elections. They held the Senate from 1981 to 1987, from 1995 till January 3, 2001, from January 20, 2001 till June 2001, and from 2003 till 2007. They held the House from 1995 till 2007. And they have won 7 of the last 11 presidential elections.
The problem is that the Republicans never govern as conservatively as they campaign, so that they not only piss off their constituents, they also continue leftist policies that (as always) blow up in their faces (e.g., Fannie and Freddie). So they slowly but steadily lose ground.

I was brought by the Buraq, which is an animal white and long, larger than a donkey but smaller than a mule, who would place its hoof at a distance equal to the range of vision Then he [Gabriel] brought the Buraq, handsome-faced and bridled, a tall, white beast, bigger than the donkey but smaller than the mule. He could place his hooves at the farthest boundary of his gaze. He had long ears. Whenever he faced a mountain his hind legs would extend, and whenever he went downhill his front legs would extend. He had two wings on his thighs which lent strength to his legs.

I don't want a republican party that grows the government slower than the alternative. Slow or fast it doesn't matter. Either way we pay and they enrich themselves.
That has been going on for 80+ years. Obama has pressed the accelerator to the floor. Given this trend we will be bankrupt (think 1000% inflation) in 10 - 15 years.
I don't want this to come to pass. It will if we don't change.
I want a republican party that actually shrinks the government.

The debate was if O'Donnell was electable in blue Delaware where views are far to the left of here.
We all agree that we would rather have O'Donnell than Coons. Okay?
The question of electability remains however, and is made worse with this.
Candidates can withstand mistakes, gaffs and attacks - and sometimes are made stronger by them.
But no candidate can withstand ridicule for very long. And the concern is not what Bill Maher will do - it is what SNL will do.

1025 - "I don't care about this video. Everybody knows catholic girls often get involved in this stuff. The story here is that she explored and left it."
Who is "everybody"? Is this factoid from the Cliff Clavin Book of Well Known Facts? I'm a cradle Catholic, your blanket accusation is offensive. We in Delaware know that the eyes of the nation are on our upcoming election. The Democrats who make up most of the electorate are not going to spend one second of their time rationalizing away Miss O'Donnell's quirks and foibles. Neither will the Independents. And over half of the Republicans were not backing her in the first place.
We don't appreciate a candidate whose archive of media appearances provides a treasure chest for Jon Stewart and Bill Maher to have fun with. Coons proved by his tenure as a corporate attorney at W.L. Gore that he is no Marxist. That nickname may play well in the blogosphere, but it's we Delawareans who will be voting. The more these clips surface, the more moderate Coons appears. I haven't read all the posts yet, don't know if her "human brain on mouse" remark was referenced. And that was from 2007. This campaign is a slow-moving train wreck. So many of the national punditry will have egg on their face by the end of October. (Hannity, Rush, Palin and company)

Since when did making crazy, nonsensical public statements in the heat of a political campaign become a disqualification for a Senate seat held by Joe Biden for three decades?
