Oh, Dear: Reid Promises to "Reform" Filibuster in Next Congress
— Ace

I emphasize "next Congress" because the majority then just could be the GOP, and this is a great softening-of-the-ground for the GOP stripping the Democrats of the filibuster.

I also think it's hysterical that Harry Reid still thinks he'll be part of the next Congress.

"The filibuster has been abused," Sen. Harry Reid said at a reporter's briefing this afternoon. "But next Congress, we are going to take a look at it. And we're going to make some changes in it.”

Speaking of Harry Reid, do non-Nevadans realize the Democrats' most likely candidate for governor there is one Rory Reid, son of Hapless Harry?

He's doing better than his dad -- he only trails GOP rival Brian Sandoval by 18 points. He also trails GOP contender Mike Montandon by five.

I really can't wait to gang-tickle the Reid family in November.

2 What makes Reid think that the GOP wouldn't filibuster a filibuster rule change.

3 I believe the term you're looking for is hate-tickle.

4 Even if Harry miraculously makes it back, he's going to get turfed for his leadership position in favor of Schmucky Chucky or Dick Turban.

5 They'll have to install a podium with microphone in Harry's basement. And his family can paste pictures of senators on the wall so Reid thinks he's in the chamber doing business. He can make all the speeches he wants and, fortunately, all the telephones in the room aren't plugged in.

What's that level higher than a supermajority, the 66% one?  Becuase, IIRC, it takes 66% to change Senate rules.

Harry's always been a dreamer.

7 Ahh yes.  Harry would know all about abuse of the filibuster.

9 I'm not sure any promise made by Reid is credible at this point, regardless of the term in question.

Note that just FOUR WEEKS ago, Reid came out publically AGAINST filibuster "reform":

========

Reid nixes filibuster reform effort:

By Paul Kane
Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.) on Thursday dismissed an effort by some Democrats to eliminate the filibuster, saying the chamber's procedures were designed to prevent the majority party from unilaterally changing the rules.

Minutes before a pair of colleagues formally unveiled their proposal to eliminate filibusters, Reid told reporters he adhered to the long-standing Senate rule that only a two-thirds majority could change the chamber's rules. This high hurdle -- established decades ago in an effort to prevent a party with a simple majority from ruling the chamber with an iron fist -- would require eight Republicans to join the 59 members of the Democratic caucus to alter the rules, something Reid said is not going to happen.

Harry Reid's only hope is to fool everyone with a faux tea party candidate as a spoiler.  Even then, I doubt it will work.

Harry "this war is lost" Reid is a gonner.

btw - It should be hammerer home that saying "the war is lost" while our men and women are still in the field, and doing so for partisan reasons, is an unforgivable offense.  The man is a disgrace.

11 Now is the winter of their discontent
Made glorious summer by this son of Reid;
And all the clouds that low'r'd upon our Congress
In the deep bosom of the elections buried.

18 Hypocrite Harry on the filibuster. . .when Bush was President:

-----
The filibuster is far from a procedural gimmick. It's part of the fabric of this institution we call the Senate. It was well-known in colonial legislatures before we became a country, and it's an integral part of our country's 214-year history.

The first filibuster in the United States Congress happened in 1790. It was used by lawmakers from Virginia and South Carolina who were trying to prevent Philadelphia from hosting the first Congress.

Since then, the filibuster has been employed hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of times. It's been employed on legislative matters, it's been employed on procedural matters relating to the president's nominations for Cabinet and sub-Cabinet posts, and it's been used on judges for all those years.

One scholar estimates that 20 percent of the judges nominated by presidents have fallen by the wayside, most of them as a result of filibusters.

Senators have used the filibuster to stand up to popular presidents, to block legislation, and, yes, even, as I've stated, to stall executive nominees.

The roots of the filibuster are found in the Constitution and in our own rules. In establishing each house of Congress, Article 1, Section 5, of the Constitution states that each house may determine its rules.

In crafting the rules of the Senate, senators established the right to extended debate. And they formalized it with Rule 22 more than a hundred years ago — I should say about a hundred years ago. This rule codified the practice that senators could debate extensively.

Under Rule 22, debate may be cut off under limited circumstances: 67 votes to end a filibuster of a motion to amend the Senate rule. That is what is being attempted here.

But, no, we are not going to follow the Senate rules. No. Because of the arrogance of power of this Republican administration who controls the Supreme Court, the House, and the Senate. It's not enough that they come to the people's body and say, "Let's take our chances by a fair ball game."

Because he lives in the moment. The past and the future are totally irrelevant to him and Pelosi.

28 taylork - No, what they are holding onto is a belief that they have to fight the good fight to keep their core constituency from wandering off stoned on election night. They need something to excite the kids, upset the African-Americans, and scare the Seniors -- and it has to be big this time.

30 Barry told Harry that he wold write an executive order appointing Harry Nevada's Senator for life. All he has to do is pass health care.

Posted by: Buzzsaw at March 10, 2010 10:44 AM (tf9Ne)

31 Mallamutt - my personal fear is that Obama floods the economy with cheap dollars in September (once he gets all four of the Fed governors in) hoping to "stimulate" the economy - before the election - and have the inflation kick in after the elections. He will blame the crashing value of investments on "evil Wall Street republicans" to the Seniors, the kid and the African Americans will enjoy the cash. I don't see another path forward.

Posted by: Jean at March 10, 2010 10:49 AM (YNOod)

32 No matter what Harry is saying now, and even assuming for the sake of argument that he's going to be around next Congress to influence what happens, if (ie when) the Dems lose seats in the next Senate, they're simply not going to be ABLE to change the rules of the filibuster.

I think he realizes this himself, and what we're hearing now is a sort of displacement of the anger the Democrats have at being procedurally unable to ram through their tremendously unpopular Obamacare legislation.

Instead of blaming their sh#tty bill, they're blaming process.

He pretty much has to talk like that. It wouldn't be very prudent (no matter how truthful) for him to come out and say, "Well, since my ass is grass after 2010, I don't give shit one about this anymore."

Harry can be like Kramer in the Seinfeld episode when he constructs Merv Griffin's set in his apartment and then lives as if he's conducting a talk show.

I watched the movie District 9 last night and found the aliens more endearingly human than Reid.  Not to mention smarter.....

39 Good ole Harry. He can be counted on to utter an asinine statement daily. What I am wondering is, if he and Biden are having a gaffe contest? If the voters of Nevada are smart, they will send Harry back to the backwater of Searchlight Nv. Hell, he really should be sitting in a jail cell in Carson City or Ely. Maybe there will be a God and make my dream come true.

40 "Gang tickling" - hahahahaha!  Picture this: Crips and Bloods on a sweltering LA Saturday night, paired off in the street, eyes slitted and fixated on each others' tattooed tears and howling with laughter as calloused gangsta hands roam immodestly across bodies writ with braille-ish scars and prison ink.

43 I'm just curious, but how may actual filibusters have we actually had in the US Senate in the past 4 years?
