Oh, God: RedState Was Exaggerating For Effect, Or Something
— Ace

You're doing it wrong.

With apologies to RedState readers (and Dan Riehl who is rather upset about the whole post from this morning), IÂ’ve had no hesitation in stringing the media along like Folks has done. He wanted his fifteen minutes of fame and got a week. Now he needs to show us what he has and, if he has what he says he has, let Haley supporters make up their minds. No one needs to humor him with another week of sensational salaciousness. There are kids and a husband involved in this mess too.

I have no clue if anyone is behind Will Folks doing this. He really could feel aggrieved for some reason and just want to take out Nikki Haley. But I have a theory, I have some facts, and IÂ’ve drawn some inferences to form my opinion. LetÂ’s go below the fold and down the rabbit hole.

LetÂ’s stop playing the Will Folks game of stringing everyone along and letÂ’s just get to what I actually know and what I think. And IÂ’ll dispense now with the third person, which is really over done.

That said, read on, because RedState does have some interesting stuff suggesting a paid hit. But honestly -- just say that. Yeah, I know, "this is like what Will Folks is doing" but Will Folks is disreputable for that.

Similar reaction at Hot Air.

Including, alas, the sad fact that while many of these calls are explainable, there is the matter of a 2:24 am call that went on for two hours.

20 There are two other troubling things about the phone calls. First, when the story broke, Haley claimed she "barely knew" Folks. Obviously this was untrue. Second, it's hard to see what legitimate business would keep them up till all hours of the night in 2007. Haley wasn't even campaigning that year. Moreover, she ran unopposed in 2006, and faced only token opposition in 2008. (She won in '08 with 83% of the vote.) tiny.cc/ajhy7

This is far worse than pathetic calls for Fiorina to step down, and that was pretty bad.  Not Erickson's best month.

Without getting weirdly girly about this entire mess, what if it wasn't a physical affair but an emotional one? I mean, we all agree she probably wasn't bumping uglies with the ugly, but what if there was an emotional element to their "work relationship"?

Even better, what if she starts describing this at the Tuesday night debate? It would then become essentially a Lifetime movie of the week.

42 Ace, you and the (other) asshats at Red State and HA are turning this 'story' into some sort of National Enquirer super expose.

When any of you get any hard facts which can be independently substantiated, by all means  let us know.

In the meantime, please spare us your breathless, hyped-up innuendos ("on the one hand it could be true; on the other, maybe not".)  A person's reputation is on the line here, consequently, this is not the time to engage in prurient speculation. Either go out and dig up the facts yourself, or wait for the facts to come to you, and then report objectively on those facts.

He's such a weird fuck he could have drawn Haley into being his de facto shrink on call. Sometimes people are too nice for their own good. Folks could have been droning on and on about how his mom never let him lick the spoon when she was baking cookies, and Haley was on the other end sawing wood.

It's happened to me, I've fallen asleep when my friends call me and start yakking late into the night.

54 with regards to a 2:24AM phone call lasting 2 hours...i'm not going to make excuses for her, because i kind of think something happened between them...

But....as someone who had a phone thing going on with a girl (who lived on the other side of the country)...there really are plenty of possible reasons...

-someone died? consoling?
-maybe someone was confiding in the other about something of a personal nature (relationship problems? family problems?) folks seems like the kind of douche who'd act compassionate and interested in whatever a relatively attractive woman is saying while he's jerking off on the other line with porntube running in the background...
-the thing about phone sex....and the ladies should comment on it..i just don't see it stretching on for 2 hours....but, who knows? folks seems like an imaginative SOB....he was probably regaling her with his fantasies of beating her...
-a brilliant strategy idea or plan that had took 2 hours to plan out?
-maybe she couldn't sleep and she was in the mood to gossip with her "girlfriend"

having said all that...apparently she felt comfortable initiating a phone call at 2 in the morning...so what does that tell you...they were close, they definitely had a close friendship...

-if she did hook up with him, i'd go with the generic reason...she was missing something in her life intimacy-wise and she knew douchebag with no life was more than happy to listen to her...

-things went south, and he got pissed.

58 Can I ask why this matters?  If the woman is capable of doing the job, if she has the credentials then why should she be subjected to this?  I never felt Sanford should resign either.  The dems don't resign, heck the dems get away with a lot of things with impunity, so why do republicans have to play by the rules?

I mean, if there is something else, besides some stupid affair, then come out with it already, but if not, these folks should just shut up already.  Unless this candidate did something while in office that would be offensive then the only people she has to answer to are the hubby of 13 years and the two kids, period.

Notice, Mrs. Spitzer is still around.  Sure, he's out of office but his offense was to cross state lines....but she is still there next to old eliot.

62 Kensington, Yeah, but you know, in a murder trial, a matching ballistics report doesn't prove you did the crime. Because you can't prove it's the same gun, just a similar gun. They say "the bullet was CONSISTENT with" the gun the defendant owned, not that it was, necessarily, the same gun. Consistent with -- that doesn't prove things but it is probative. On its own, it isn't conclusory, but it is relevant. These late night phone calls don't prove anything per se but they are consistent with *something.*

Lets just say she was bumping uglies with him, is that really so far outside the realm of possibility? Yea, the guy's an ugly fat pasty fuck, but perhaps he's a smooth talker and it started out as some sort of emotional affair, husband got deployed or something and at the time he was a close confidant. Maybe she felt like she was doing the guy a favor giving him some pity poontang and that anyone who took one look at him and one look at her would never possibly believe it.

There have been a few times in my life where I've witnessed these same events go down, mainly within the work place and a couple of those times it involved this exact same scenario and I've been like "wtf ? Him? Her? No way !" so it can happen.

Maybe it didnt happen at all and he's just being paid to do a political hit, that's what I hope it turns out to be in the end.

I guess the thing that gets me in these scandals is how long the politician prevaricates before coming clean. I have no opinion about this particular situation, but I think what disappoints people is that they go into these types of scandals wanting to believe the politician when he/she claims "I categorically deny that anything improper happened" and usually end up disappointed at some time in the future when the politician finally admits "yeah, I rode that joystick like I was trying for the high score in Pac-Man."

It isn't the affair, it is the cover-up that annoys me.

"But I like you soooo much as a friend"
"We have a good friendship and I don't want to ruin that."
"Let's just be friends, is that OK?"

I'm just sayin if long late night chats with chicks = sex, I'd have a few more notches on the bed pole.

And after vesting a lot of time in the approach and "making the move" and getting one of the above lines, jilted might be a good description.

However,
All that said, this clearly shifts the odds closer to "They did it" all I'm saying here is that there is still room for doubt. I put my current Bayesian Belief at 50-50.

86 You people all have serious reading comprehension issues or you would understand why Intrepid Boy Reporter Erick Erickson had to do this.  Erick Erickson was brilliantly trying to make a point about the utter douchebaggery of Will Folks by ironically and fearlessly becoming as big of a string-along bullshitter as he is.  You were all just too dumb to understand this genius tactical maneuver.

The fact that Erick Erickson has to come back here with yet another follow-up article explaining his position, just as he had to do after the mass purging of Birfers from the site; just as he had to do after calling the GOP a racist party that didn't want a black man in the Senate; just as he had to do after publicly mocking wacko fringe elements at the same time he was endorsing Rand Paul 100000000000% in the Kentucky primary, says everything about the thick-headedness of you people.

Erick Erickson is so far above you plebes that the first-person just isn't sufficient anymore.  And now Erick Erickson will hear no more from all of you people who Just. Don't. Get It.

The rest of you, stay tuned tomorrow for a series of special guest diaries offering perspective on our grassroots, take-no-prisoners takeback of our party from the entrenched good-old-boy insiders, written exclusively for RedState by all 218 Republican members of Congress.

102 Here is a poll taken after the news broke. Haley extends her lead. The smarmy little turd moves into 2nd place. As I said before, Nikki is my State Rep. I have no reason to doubt her, 2 hr phone calls not withstanding. My reasons are simple. Her credibility has always been unchallenged in this city.(Lexington, SC). She has made some real enemies who would stop just short of the felony line to destroy her and lastly, she has a husband and two sons, 8 and 11, who are her world. I'm not saying I think it's impossible she would not have an affair. I'm not that naive. I am absolutely certain that she would not brazenly lie in order to win an election and damage her family. This is not a large city. She would be ruined if she lies and fights this and it is proven true. Her sons would be humiliated and her husband shamed. Based on her life history, I can't see her doing this.I have no reason to believe she did it and her lifetime of proven integrity to say she didn't. If this were to be true, I will come back here and say I was fooled and she is a duplicitous witch. I am very comfortable with my convictions on Nikki.

Erik needs to learn that there are various levels of funny.  There is the top level - Richard Pryor/Chris Rock funny.

There is a second level - Ron White type funny: not on the top level, but for the most part pretty good.

There is a third level - the either you love them or can't stand them level - Jerry Seinfield/Dane Cook.

There is a fourth level - mildly amusing but, really, you wonder if they are worth the 10 bucks a pop and 2 drink minimum you are paying. Think anyone who has ever been a sidekick for Howard Stern

There is a fifth level  - the really not funny level. Think Sinbad, think Carrot Top level.

There is a sixth level - your a comedian bordering on being a douchbag. Erik, this is your stop.

Lesson: Erik - leave the comedic attempts to the professionals. Or the better commentators here at the AOSHQ. Focus on things that you can accomplish, like, oh, not sucking so much when you are on CNN.

Oh, and Happy Memorial Day Weekend, everybody.

@102

Well it's the people in her district that would have the best read on the situation. I went to your link, I found this interesting:

"The other big surprise in the governorÂ’s race was Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer, whose campaign has been marred by the “poor people = stray dogs” controversy, rising in the poll to second place at 20.7 percent. Barrett was nestled in third at 14.1 percent."

So the Lt. Gov puts his fat foot in his mouth, and now attempts to disable his biggest challenger by planting a bogus non-affair story.

Where's the recorded messages, a la Gennifer Flowers? Remember, she had those recordings out faster than you could say: Billy C's my daddy!Where's the guilty party barricading himself in a bathroom, against the National Enquirer reporters who have busted him? Where's the stinkin' blue dress?? This is a piss-poor takedown attempt by South Carolina's version of the political Keystone Kops.

+10000.  Pride cometh before a fall, and Erickson's head (and those of Moe Lane, and Neil Stevens, and at least half-a-dozen other people there) had gotten so big it couldn't fit through the virtual door anymore.  Their collective attitude of being the driving force behind the modern conservative movement passed the point of obnoxiousness a long time ago.

146 2 hours in one instance is stupid anyways. I've had friends that talked constantly all the time every damn night from midnight to whatever time they were tired by then. Now those people were actually bf/gf's but it seems to me it's more of a strategy/consultation/etc type of call. Especially when they're being paid on a salary and not by the hour so there are friends of mine that do work in the hours they're not "on duty" or heck even consult with other co-workers over plans for the next day. Politics is changing all the time so has anyone checked what was going on in South Carolina at the time when the call was placed? A bill proposed? Some kind of PR trip? Whatever the fuck.

156 Let me get this straight, some are reading and paying attention to Red State and Hot air. These two blogs have something in common. What is that you ask? They both censor comments in a Little Stalin Football sorta way. You're a birther or even a just-show-us-the-former --bannned. You use the word revolution or secession---banned. Quite interesting really. Ban the words islamist or marxist? How 'bout socialist or deficit? It's a slippery slope folks and no one should stand for it or frequent places that like it. Little Red Footballs indeed. Little beta-allah footballs as well.

166 curious, you're right... I just didn't realize that kind of thing was even suspicious.  Of course they call eachother, if he was working for her independently.  I guess the late night is supposed to indicate something secretive, but I would think affairs are kept away from family hours.  I guess I just don't know how that stuff works, but this obviously is nothing.

We're going to keep seeing non-evidence touted as 'tough to explain'.  They have nothing.  The attention is already well below apex now and they would have dished what they had if they had anything.

We can pretty much bank on Haley being untouched, I think.

I want to shill one more time, though.    This smear tactic will continue to be used to the advantage of the most corrupt, unless we go ahead and show it backfires.  She's going to need to talk about her views, her accountant skills, her reform attitude, and what she plans to do for her state in fighting a very tough an entrenched group of crooks.  She can't overcome all the scandal smear without funding, so if you have a spare ten or twenty, please go to nikkihaley.com and see if you like what she stands for.

Remember, absolutely no hard evidence of this affair exists.  don't let that ruin a reformer

Posted by: laceyunderalls at May 28, 2010 05:26 PM (qTPJy)

600 calls isn't many for a parasitic hanger-on (a REALLY parasitic one).  And she hasn't denied that they never had ANY relationship, just any personal relationship that would violate her marriage vows.  It's pretty obvious that they had a professional relationship over the years.

172 Very likely Haley was cheating on her husband with two little kids. Anyone who knows anything about both politicians and women and particularly, attractive women, would not be surprised. The hotter the chick, the bigger the douchebag.

I could see Haley finding her husband a "Kitchen Bitch" and figuring a douchebag would be "hotter." Plus being a pol, she's in danger of Clinton disease, or Edwards Syndrome, or Newsome gruesome, or Spitzer's Symptoms -- thinking you can get away with anything. It's an occupational hazard.

Folks wife, if anything, figures he's more worthwhile because a married lady screwed him. A married lady who is hot. Recall allegedly this affair took place before his marriage. Its just more validation her husband is desired by other women.

190 I still think it's Bauer because he has the most to lose. He's currently the Lt. Gov, if he loses here where else does he go? US House, he'd have to move into a Republican district, problem is that all of those are already held and he'd look like a total carpetbagger. US Senate, yeah right, he has no chance against DeMint and Grahamnesty would never allow him to challenge for that seat. If he doesn't get into the governor's office he has nowhere else to go.

His only hope right now is to finish in second place while also preventing Haley from getting 40+% in order to force a runoff, then try to pick up the majority of McMaster and Barrett supporters.

I have always thought Fast Andy was a piece of shit and hopefully this will be the end of his political career.

191 Alright, honest question here from an liberal non-troll usual lurker: What is the backstory on the snark and sometimes-outright animosity from the AoSHQ folks towards RedState? I mean, aside from the really dumb thing Erick did today? Not talking about little pissing match gossip stuff, either - what's the real conflict about? Is it country-club Republican vs. actual grass roots? Insider vs. outsider? SoCons vs. MilBlog? Seriously, I've been reading the site for better than a year and this explosion took me by surprise.

FWIW, I read this site more often because it's just funnier and waaaay less full of itself. But it just seemed from reading this thread that it went deeper than that.

193 A more serious point. I read here a LOT. I hardly ever post but I enjoy the comments and the snark and the crudity and the moronness. I'm having trouble finding this situation funny at all.  I know it's because I know (sort of)  and support the person involved. I've voted for her and followed her success because she is someone I respect and admire. She's local and sort of family. Also, she is very important to this state. God, what a cesspool SC is when it comes to politics. She is the only person in this race and the only one of her political generation who is serious about reforming the culture of politics here.  I don't know why she was on the phone ar 2:00 AM with this guy, but until proven otherwise, based her her track record, I'm giving her the benefit of the doubt. And she never said she did not have a relationship with him, just that it was not improper or sexual . You would have to live here to understand how much politics rules Columbia and the surrounding cities, and how the local tribal bloodsports are carried out. Think of the opening scenes of The Godfather Part Two and you're getting close. It is often said in a situation like this that only two people know what really happened, but in this case I am betting that there are at least a half dozen, probably more
.I know that objectivity and distance can be an asset in keeping a clear eye, but cynicism and disillusionment can be corrosive to the soul. I guess I can't blame anyone for being cynical, what with politicians being, well, politicians. Just don't blame me for being trusting of Nikki Haley. I've known about her and observed  her character for a long time.  She is nothing like what she is being portrayed. I trust her. Thanks for letting me ramble. This is just very hard for those of us with real hopes for change in this state.

214 #193

For me, it is a couple things.  First, and most important, is that they don't have much credibility with me.  When you read their take on a race, you're getting the race as they wish it were not as it is. Example- their calls for Fiorina to drop out to clear way for Devore.  That is laughable stuff.  Another example is the Illinois governor primary.  They got behind a longshot, which is fine.  What is not fine is misleading people into thinking he's got a chance.  He didn't, and we almost got the worst candidate from it.  The guy that ended up winning, has a fine record from their standpoint too but they didn't acknowledge he had a shot at all.  They hyped up their guy instead.

Then there is the arrogance.  They take themselves so seriously, when much of what they do is amateurish and self destructive. This is the latest, and greatest, example.  Now you have Ace here, who will play games from time to time, but every time he does it he is giving you a wink and nod somewhere so you know what the game is as he is playing it.  He's not going to hurt the cause, and may help, by taking this route.  Not those guys at Redstate.   They stumble all over themselves again and again, and this is the last straw for me.

ItÂ’s not surprising that Folks has at least some evidence to support his claim, even if he is lying (which I think he is)- because if he didnÂ’t have something he could point to, he probably wouldnÂ’t have made the claim. Does anyone know if the Haley story is getting play on Maddow, Olbermann, and Matthews? Five bucks says they have a SEAL team ready to deliver day-long coverage of the South Carolina governor's race once or if Folks drops something that resembles a smoking gun....

You KNOW MSNBC is dying for this story to break....

I don't think it will get play, at least not yet.  I could be wrong though because I don't pay attention to them unless they're being ripped on here.  Now if she wins the primary and becomes the Republican gubernatorial candidate then it will get play because it allows them to play one of their favorite cards: "Republicans are hypocrites!!!!"

I get the feeling you won't be getting linked evidence to this.  So you'll probably have to look up Haley's denials yourself for either confirmation or refutation of the stupid one's claim.

227 Yeah, I'd be interested in the source of the "barely knew" meme, too, since a googlatory look at the innerweb shows that phrase appearing only on political commentary blogs (most prevalently on Lefty sites like kos and democraticunderground). 228 What bothers me about this the most is that there is no evidence anything bad happened. Records showing calls were made PROVE NOTHING about an affair. Now, if I were to go public tomorrow and claim I had an affair with Obama, the media would not take me seriously even if I had worked on his campaign and had the same phone records. Because this "scandal" hurts a conservative, then the media swoops in and implies it is true even when there is no evidence. MAKES ME SICK!

Which is why teasing up a smoking gun that doesn't exist is so damn self destructive.  The right play is to either ignore it, or state the updates as he leaks them and state that we still don't really have any proof of anything yet.

A lot of this story is being kept alive by our side.  Now I can't blame Ace, or others, for linking up to it when a presumed "friend" boasts about having a smoking gun.  With friends like that, who needs enemies?  If I'm Ace, I'm highly pissed about this right now.

I don't think you have anything to really base this on.  I think late night calls are not that big a deal for many people, and she already admitted they worked together.  This is a lot of calls, and that means basically nothing.  If that's enough to convince you, then I'm afraid just about everyone has some oddball thing in their lives that would look funny out of context.  Also, many of the people who wind up working for a politician also were friends or volunteers first.  Politicians rely on tons of volunteers.  I can't speculate with any accuracy, because we're being fed extremely cherry picked details.  With that in mind, I think the case against Nikki Haley is very weak.  The guy hasn't even come out and explicitly said they had sex or even an affair at this point, as far as I know.  Even though attention is waning.

On your other point, I agree people can still vote or not vote for her with this in mind (though I don't trust people who lie to their spouses).

What's super frustrating about this specific case is that Red State has helped fuel the fire, the scandal, and the attack.  They put themselves out there as the opposition to Folks, and they had nothing.  That really hurts their cause.  I remember they kept saying 'tune back in!  Cliff hanger!'  They are profiting off this scandal. They are just a different type of Will Folks.  There's a certain type of republican who is all about the political game, and not about the principles, or standing up for what's right.

Erick has always struck me as a game player first.

This is a fair point.  We don't know if the calls are accurate.  In fact, we know for sure this is the type of record Folks has lied about before (like those emails from his battered wife he chopped up).  For all I know, he used a start time and end time of different calls.  I know that's kinda silly.  For all I know, the call wasn't really to her, or was on hold for a while, or a late night meeting.

And Pajama Momma has a great point too.  It's been a long time since I had a friend of the opposite sex who wasn't my wife, but it's not unusual out there.  Lots of people have close friends, and Folks clearly is trying to destroy Haley for a reason.  This fits well with that 'his advances were spurned'.   Folks likes to hurt women he thinks he's in love with... we already know that.

Maybe the call was a friendship sort of thing.

It's so easy to wildly speculate about this call because it's a cherry picked vague but plausible 'hmmm'.  It is almost completely meaningless.  Seattle Slough's interpretation, that this exposes some kind of deception, is utterly unfair.

Posted by: Lex Luthor, Ruler of Australia at May 28, 2010 08:38 PM (dUOK+)

255 Steve, thanks for your comment, I found it very insightful.  I had some of the same thoughts about what was happening to Haley, and you confirmed some of my gut instincts on the matter.

And very well said about the corrosiveness to the soul.

~RI

<blockquote>195 A more serious point.

It is often said in a situation like this that only two people know what really happened, but in this case I am betting that there are at least a half dozen, probably more.

I know that objectivity and distance can be an asset in keeping a clear eye, but cynicism and disillusionment can be corrosive to the soul.

And there it is.  McMaster's people once again harshly attack Haley.  McMaster is a real piece of work.  There's nothing here.  A cherry picked piece of data that isn't verified, and only comes from a guy we already know lies and misquotes his battered wife.  Even if it were completely accurate (which is just plain unlikely), it could mean anything.  A 2 hour call could mean he was on hold during some late night project.  It could be a setup.  It could have been to someone other than Haley, but on a line associated with her.  It could have even never have happened.

But McMaster wants you to conclude that it's proof.  Why?  Because this isn't an attack from democrats, it's an attack from the corrupt against a reformer.  McMaster is not going to make any improvement to South Carolina.  Other than redistricting, which isn't a huge deal in this state anyway, there is no fundamental difference between McMaster and Sheheen.

And polls are pretty clear that the GOP nominee will win, no matter this scandal.  This is a very red state.  Telling people to abandon Haley over absolutely nothing but the cherry picked BS from a proven liar is terrible and self serving.  If that's really the best argument McMaster has, we need to stick to Haley.  All this talk about how she's a super sexy tart makes me sick too.  True, she's not hideous, but she's basically an average looking woman who has an incredibly good record fighting corruption and being fiscally smart.

As I said in the last thread before I flipped out and helped derail it, this kind of attack has been waged against Chris Christie.  Should we abandon him?  It was levied against Mccain, W, W's wife, Clarence Thomas, Justice Alito, Sarah Palin and her husband, and a very long list of others.  Usually with much more evidence than this "he claims they had a lengthy phone call!"  Usually with less of a denial from the victim, too.

The argument to abandon any candidate that is merely accused is something that will cost us every single reformer.  The corrupt know this works and will employ it.  When the GOP settles on a 2012 nominee, someone will be paid to assert an affair with that person.

Please make sure this tactic backfires, check out nikkihaley.com, and if you like her agenda, give her some money.  *THAT* is the best way to kill this scandal.

RE # 265 Lex:

1.  Try as you might to make me McMaster, or blame McMaster for Folks, or hide the fact Nikki first claimed she barely knew Folks, you are on a five day bender on the Vista if you think (a) the GOP has a cakewalk against Sheheen or (b) rank-and-file South Carolinians are going to vote for somone with a big, fat adultery cloud hanging over them.

2.  Anyway Nikki's lil buddy Erick Erickson says is Andre Bauer dontcha know, so why ya so down on Henry.  I suppose Nikki folks are going to hold everyone accountable for Folks (who is an admitted douche-nozzle), but I don't seem to recall our AG being on the phone witll Will for a couple of hours after midnight in a non-election year.

3.  Basic examination of most statewide SC races in the past 4-5 election cycles show a fairly consistent 55:45 advantage to the GOP, in both non-presidential and presidential election years.  That means if just 5 pecent flips, its a toss up.

4.  In case you missed it, our last governor - (formerly) a close ally of Ms. Haley -  imploded so completely and pathetically that he probably would hae been impeached if weren't (a) for the extrame bathos of his national humiliation, and his abject self-mortification and (b) the fact that his removal would have resulted in swearing in Governor Bauer, which was un-palatable on a bipartisan level.  The Democrats have been grooming Vincent Sheheen for years, and this is their best opportunity to take back the Governor's Mansion since Jim Hodges.  Dont think for a minute this is a cakewalk for the GOP.

5.  We need our best candidate.  I thought  that was Nikki.  But its not.  I'm sorry you don't like McMaster (trying to equate him to Sheheen is just plain stoooooopid though).  I'm going with the safe bet.  Im not paid by him.  Just making the smart play.

6.  But if you and Erick-efffing-Erickson want to keep playing footsie with damaged goods, then vote how you will.  I could care less.  I will be curious, however, to see if Jenny Sanford, paragon of domestic virtue, will be standing by Nikki come Tuesday.
