Oh Goody. ANOTHER Election.
— Russ from Winterset

Just what we needed. Another chance to point fingers & scream at each other. I'm referring to the upcoming election for the Chairman of the RNC, which is currently held by Michael Steele.

Courtesy of Hot Air, I found this article at the National Journal's Hotline that discusses all the different factions that are lining up against Mr. Steele.

A Golden Nugget of Classical Goodness from the comments: "Steele has done a great job for the Republicans and brought in the Tea Party. He should stay in his position and we will fight for him." Oooooooookay. Saying that Steele "brought in" the Tea Party is a little like saying King George III "brought in" the the Continental Congress and the American Revolution, but I will concede that he has been at least friendly towards the Tea Parties.

Here's the thing: If you believe that Michael Steele has done a good job of leading the Republican Party, you need to believe that he set out to decentralize power on the right by helping alienate the Tea Party coalition and causing them to bypass the RNC with direct contributions to their favored candidates. If you think that this is a good thing, but don't believe that Steele set out to make it happen, voting for him would be like voting for Mr. Bean or Inspector Clouseau. Rewarding incompetence.

If you think that he's done a bad job and should be replaced, which way do you go with his replacement? There's talk of Reince Priebus, the chairman of the Wisconsin Republican Party, throwing his hat into the ring. I think this might be the best option out there. He's Steele's top assistant at the RNC, so he's not a completely new face who has to learn on the job; however, looking at how the Republican Party kicked ass & took names this year in the Badger State, he seems to be a proven winner.

Let's face it, no matter how the issue is resolved, the GOP will be labeled as racist in the media for deposing their first black chairman on the heels of a big legislative win. I think we need to dig in our heels and take the criticism, because the stakes are MUCH larger in the next election. 2012 isn't just another chance to take the Senate and increase our margin in the House - it's a freakin' Presidential year. Whether the Tea Party stays on the outside or they get one of their own into leadership at the RNC, the next chairman of the RNC will need to be a coalition builder between all factions on the right. Building "hip hop coalitions" and giving interviews to Al Sharpton will be the least of our problems in the next cycle. We need someone who can rally the faithful, and I'm afraid that Michael Steele isn't up to the job.

13 You know, I'm not sure if this is the right job for Palin since the RNC chair is expected to woo very large fundraisers instead of small individual ones; however it may be a better route for her than running for office. Nevertheless... it would be delightful to see the spontaneous spattering of grey matter on the walls of MSNBC if Palin got the job.

20 I think the republicans need to think first and make sound decisions.  I'm wondering if Michael Steele's heart isn't really with the people of Maryland and if maybe he's thinking of taking another crack at that guy he lost to the last time.  That's a valid reason to step down and maybe Karl rove can run Micahel's campaign and he can have some nice contributions from the RNC and everyone is happy....

36 The job is three parts:
1.) Raise money
2.) Provide resources for a great GOTV operation, since its not something candidates automatically know how to do
3.) Stay out of the news

He failed at one and three totally, and arguably failed at two as well since he didn't raise money.  Say what you like about grassroots donations, but the parties work at their best when big dollar donations are flowing in. Steele managed to piss everyone off who is a big money donor.

And if anyone thinks parties are pointless, see the DailyCaller article about how weak state parties are partly to blame with the influx of unvetted (well, unqualified) candidates and how it played a part in Reps losing some races.  The party structure can always use new blood, but it also needs a serious revamping, because its no longer good at the things it is designed to do well.

39 Also, the reason anyone like Palin or Romney or anyone else who you would be good at the job wont run for it, is that its a position where if the party is to succeed, you have to put your own ambitions on the backburner and focus solely on everyone else running. Steele couldn't do this. Ironically, this kind of selfless behavior would be likely to boost anyone's name in the long run, but no one in politics can see more than 18 months in advance.

Except that the Republican establishment is exactly that, well funded and entrenched, and not about to "go" or do ANYTHING on demand by the majority of Americans, the Tea Party movement now for example.

Buckle up, it's going to be a bumpy ride. The GOP establishment already knifed Michele Bachmann, and will pummel the Congressional Tea Party Caucus with sabotage within it (Cornyn) and from without (Cantor).

Rick Perry's going to run for potus, and Palin will gladly be his running mate. We'll see about the "constitutional governance" America gets from either one.

This is true.

I have a prepared text upon receiving a call from the RNC (or even the Rep. Cal. 73 To answer an above question: Saul A is a prick and is just like Steele; in it for himself, not the party.

And, to be a prick, we got Steele BECAUSE everyone thought we needed an 'in your face' chairman. I bet if someone were to go find the post from two years ago talking about Steele you'd find a whole host of people on the comments bitching about how "I dont know who this Duncan fellow is, but Steele, he's black! And Black=awesome!" or some other such nonsense.

The point - none of us get to vote for the chairman. The state party committee does. And if you'd like a say, call your state party once the nominees all declare.  I really wish Ace or someone would go over the job of the party chair so that everyone is on the same page.

74 There's a story told about Frank Robinson, which probably is apocryphal, but it ought to be true.

Robinson was a great baseball players: a Hall of Famer, and the last man to win the triple crown. And he was the first black man to be hired as a major-league manager.

The story goes that during the press conference when Robinson was introduced as manager of the Baltimore Orioles, a reporter asked him what it meant for him to be the first black manager. And he replied, "What this means is that I will be the first black man to be fired as a major-league manager." Which he was, because the Orioles of that era were pretty terrible.

Like I said, the story is probably apocryphal; but if it's true, it says a lot about Robinson's character: He knew he was hired to do a job, and that sooner or later every manager is fired, and he accepted that it would have nothing to do with his race: only with whether his team won.

I would hope that Michael Steele would show the same grace and maturity. But I really doubt it.

83 I'll play devil's advocate and say something nice about Steele.  The RNC was utterly effed up before Steele became chair.  It was the RNC voting members that picked him in and they are the ones that will never make an awesome choice like Michelle Malkin.

84 Steele needs to go.
The difference between conservatives and leftists is that we try to get the best person for the job. Screw the identity politics.
Let them call us racist--they'll do that anyway.
But what will they do when we run the most qualified, most perfect man for the job of president in 2012--and he happens to be black?

Now, it is possible for the Tea Party to actually become a viable third party. I do not discount that. I am just noting that it is not as easy as some here smuggly conclude it to be.

That's not even what they are claiming. They are saying it will become the second party. Which is even more unlikely.

No third party has ever risen to be a major party in US History. The earlier second party has to die first. This is true of the Federalists, who died after opposing the War of 1812, and the Whigs, who died over slavery issues before the formation of the Republican Party arose as a coalition of opponents to the Kansas Nebraska act.

It is far easier for a major party to change its positions and absorb the third party.

86 On the other hand, Mitt Romney isn't doing anything, to all appearances.

87 I agree, people like me have crow to eat about Michael Steele. I wanted a black guy (basically because the Democrats had one). I recalled that Blackwell had weighed in on creationism and so I ruled him out. And I recalled that Steele hasn't pounded that particular chicken and was furthermore likeable, and had a not bad administrative track record in Maryland. I had no idea that Steele was going to morph into an insecure, fame-seeking, dithering fool.

88 The idea of bypassing the RNC and giving directly to candidates is almost enough to make me jizz in my pants.

The apparatchiks and good old boys in the Republican party are to blame for it turning away from fiscal conservatism.

The US already has one criminal conspiracy masquerading as a political party, we don't need two.  We don't need a Republican party comprised of Murkowskis, we need one comprised of Reagans.

Tempe Tea Party!

93 @64 Saul Anuzis is actually a pretty stand up guy, I have known him for years. He is a dedicated individual who would do one hell of a job at focusing on helping the republican party get the right people into office.
