Oh Man...
— Ace

Look, I hate to be the bearer of unfortunate truths but...

It is what it is.

O'Donnell tells THE WEEKLY STANDARD that while she does pay rent on what is technically her legal residence with campaign funds, she also has a separate permanent residence, the location of which she won't disclose "for security reasons." O'Donnell said that her campaign office and home were vandalized in 2008, and she's fearful that her opponents will do the same this year. Says O'Donnell:

They’re following me. They follow me home at night. I make sure that I come back to the townhouse and then we have our team come out and check all the bushes and check all the cars to make sure that—they follow me.

That’s what’s disgusting, as you can see from the YouTube videos. They knock on the door at all hours of the night. They’re hiding in the bushes when I’m at candidate forums. In 2008 they broke into my home. They vandalized my home. They wrote nasty notes on my front door, on my front porch. They jeopardized my safety. They did the same thing to our campaign office. They broke into our campaign office. They vandalized our campaign office. They stole files. My campaign signs that had my picture—they put a spear in my mouth poked out my eyes, and cut out the part of my heart, and wrote nasty names all over those campaign signs.

I would be a fool to be pressured into disclosing where I live, when I know that the stakes are even higher this time. What makes me think they wont do the same distasteful things they did in 2008 when the stakes are even higher, when we’re even more viable. I mean come on, John, you’re a class act. You don’t want to—you know that this is a security issue. You know what they’re capable of.

Is O'Donnell suggesting that Castle supporters vandalized her office in 2008, when she was running for Senate against Joe Biden? “I’m not sure who did it, but I know for a fact that Mike Castle and [Delaware GOP chairman] Tom Ross were campaigning against me,” O’Donnell says. “They’ve been sabotaging my candidacy since 2008. So who knows who did it back then.” O'Donnell says there are no police reports of the 2008 break-in because she didn't want to make an issue of it at the time. She claims to have pictures of vandalized signs.

She also won't rule out a third party spoiler bid, should she lose.

More about this candidacy at Townhall. Mark Levin continues supporting her... but only because he hates the living guts of Mike Castle. Which, yeah, I get it.

But.

But.

Jim Geraghty links this "trainwreck" interview, which I don't think is really a trainwreck.

The problem is the interviewer is so antagonistic it comes off as an ambush, which makes her seem sympathetic. A lot of it is quibbling over her self-puffery about "winning two counties" (out of three) in Delaware in 2008. (She didn't, and didn't even come close in one of them.) But, whatever, insurgent candidate, sometimes you have to bend the truth, maybe.

To be fair, she also says she had nothing at all to do with that Liberty.com gay-affair thing, and disavows it, saying "Take the high road."

That's perfectly possible. When you're a little itty-bitty candidate you can't be too choosy about who will work for you, since no one wants to. You might have to settle for the bottom-feeders.

Still, all that, sure, sure, the system is pounding an underdog upstart, yeah, but... there's this following business.

I'm sure this all appears very unseemly to O'Donnell's supporters. The establishment media all ganging up on this upstart to aid a RINO.

I know it looks ugly.

All I can say is... Well, either she was followed and vandalized and all that in 2008 by Mike Castle (who wasn't even running against her; and her own bid was a forlorn-hope give-up by the party) or she wasn't.

It's kind of one or the other.

One thing, though, is that there are "campaign trackers" who go around with videocameras taping candidates as often as possible. To catch them in a "Macacca" moment. So it's not at all kooky to suppose she is being taped in public, frequently, by Mike Castle's people.

In fact, that's surely happening.

But... it's also sort of SOP at this point. It's not something to get all weird about. It sucks, yeah, but this is how the game is played. Everyone's taping everyone, hoping for that golden gaffe.

To defend her a little more, too: I'm told that in that video where her body-people get in the faces of tapers -- yeah, those guys are probably Castle campaign trackers.

So, in that case, it's really not a thug jumping ugly with an average citizen. It's one political pro getting in the face of another political pro. Kind of like a papparazzi knocking over a person to get a picture -- if that person is an ordinary citizen, we say it's bad. If the person knocked over, though, is just another papparazzi, we say, who cares. It's how they play their dirty game.

But, still. Altogether: I just don't find this candidacy credible.

8 Ace,  I think that interview was bad, and I'll tell you why.  In NY we have a tea-party candidate self-funder running for governor by the name of Carl Paladino.  About a month ago, back when I was enthusiastic for him, he gave an interview to a Buffalo-area conservative talker, and it quickly devolved into shouting and filibustering.  He's rebounded a bit since then, but if you are a conservative candidate who has hostile interviews with sympathetic hosts (she repeatedly notes that Gaffney endorsed her in '06) it makes you look like a fool.

For the love of God, she even accuses the host of being on Castle's payroll.  That's pathetic.  This woman is a con artist and a crook.  If federal election laws were enforced more strongly, she'd be in jail for misappropriation of funds right now.  That bloggers - influential ones, mind you - would endorse a crackpot as a means to put the fear of Heaven in Castle is beyond my comprehension.

To my mind, she was already toast because of her non-existent CV. And the desperate, lame-o, gay outing thing. I don't care if she thinks she has plausible deniability on that. She owns it regardless.

Now she tries to cover up her lack of valid residency with paranoid blithering about skulking enemies in the bushes. Because as we all know, paranoid blithering about skulking enemies in the bushes is so acceptable to the voters.

Sounds like she should be pushing a shopping cart full of her earthly possessions as she babbles.

A laughing stock. Turn the page. Pull the chain. Whatever.

35 Continued support for O'Donnell from Levin (in italics)
Now more than ever, she deserves our support.
Simply because she's capable of repeating ultra-con talking point like a freakin parrot?

Our families and our country are at a perilous point.
True.

Castle has voted to bankrupt this nation and our children.
True

And he will undermine a conservative majority.
No more then the Maine Gurlz

He needs to be defeated.
Desirable.  But if O'Donnell wins the Biden's Seat goes to a Democrat who will surely undermine a Republican Senate (which you may not get without Castle), more votes to bankrupt the nation and our children

These tactics, where Castle uses his favorite blogs and a new website he has created, to smear O'Donnell should motivate you even more.

It's called politics Mr. Levin and much of what you are calling smears is turning out to be the truth.  There was no really qualified Republican challenger to actually displace Castle.  The goal now has to be to put a conservative into the at-large seat and take out Castle down the road. Meanwhile, Castle won;t be so destructive if the Republicans are in the majority because McConnell can screw him over in assignments if he doesn't, at least partially, toe the line.

Vic 39, I like your posts, and I tend toward the dooooooom / fringe-Right contingent myself; but you're off base here.

First, we've primaried out so many RINOs already this year, that we can afford to install one or two in their place. Except that it's going to be in Democrats' places, here (and, Kirk willing, in IL) - which is a total net Win for us.

Second, even if you don't think that shifting purple to red and blue to R-voting-purple is a good time, then think that we will at least avoid a PR nightmare by sending O'Connell back home to collect stray cats. If Castle wins, the MSM will ignore Delaware and hope that Castle doesn't start tearing down the narrative of Those Crazy Tea Baggers. If O'Connell wins, the MSM will be running hit-pieces on The Republican Party Extremist Nightmare - and running down the vote totals for our fresh new prospects, like Rand Paul and Sharron Angle.

So, it's more like: tails we win, and heads we fail to lose.

To defend her a little more, too: I'm told that in that video where her body-people get in the faces of tapers -- yeah, those guys are probably Castle campaign trackers.

Which is all the more reason for her "people" to behave respectfully. Those idiot wannabe goons played right into her opponents' hands. For as much as this lady is a professional candidate, you'd think she'd have learned some simple campaign survival tactics by now.

I never heard her on Hannity, because I can't bear to listen to more than 10 mins. of his show. He probably thinks she's the bee's knees because she's a manic Catholic.

92 So if Castle is so bad, why can't somebody who isn't crazy from Delaware run?

Posted by: Bevel Lemelisk

1. The party wouldn't allow it. She was the only one who would run against Biden, and they gave her token support. Castle refused to run against him and secure the seat.

2. What makes you think that we aren't all crazy?

3. Political vandalism here is chronic, as is cheating at the polls.

example: I was once Republican checker working at a polling place in Wilmington where the registration cards and I were the only things white for a 1/2 radius. I watched as a local pol came in repeatedly to the polls, literally waving money. The third time he did it, a black lady bigger then I body checked him and hustled him out the door. That is something you don't learn in civics class.

Castle would have to move far to the right to achieve the level of RINO. He had a rating of 20 in 2007! That means he voted with the Dems 80% of the time. Hell, there are Dems who are to the right of him! In fact, it looks like Coons is to the right of him!

Castle needs to be defeated.  We don't educate the voters about the value of conservatism by nominating RINOs.  Why not educate them with candidates like O'Donnell?  Why can't we run conservatives in liberal states?  Maybe it will set the table for the future.

Ace I agree with you but it's not that extreme. A fairly Conservative candidate, and Mike Castle is not even nominally Conservative, can win in blue states with the right personality and charisma. People forget differences on issues when they come to actually like and trust  a candidate. Look at Obama. It's much tougher with House races as they can run 70% Dem  but the Senate is statewide so it's a little easier. Jim Demint isn't going to win a Senate seat in New England any time soon but Kay Baily Hutchinson could.

Comment 142

Dear Ace:

I live in VA.  Northern VA.  Where in 2009 we elected Ken Cuccinelli as AG.  And when I canvassed door-to-door in my neighborhoods, I heard that Ken was too conservative to be elected.

And now that Ken is AG, he has filed suit against ObamaCare, the EPA cap and trade rules, and filed suit to get Michael Mann's records at UVA.

I am sure that if we would have elected a safe, moderate candidate, we would have that same record of activism.  Not.

I don't know if DE would vote for a consevative, but it all depends on who turns out.  If you have 100% turnout, then a candidate who only has support of 30% won't win.  But if you only have 50% turnout, they have a shot.

And who do you think are more enthusiastic supporters-moderates or conservates?  Who is willing to canvass door-to-door, make phone calls, and post signs?  I have yet to see the "March-of-the-RINOS" providing overwelming volunteer efforts, at least in my overwelming blue neighborhood.

In a low turnout election, you might be surprised.  Besides, why do conservatives act like abused prison wives in blue states?

And why when conservatives say bat-shit crazy things, they are unelectable.  One ill-advised interview, they are toast.

57 states?

J-O-B-S is a three letter word?

Don't actions speak louder than words?  I seen Mike Castle in action.  He is a disaster.  Another member of the Lindsey Grahamesy/McVain team.

All kidding and obvious jokes aside, this interview does elicit some serious questions:

In 2008 they broke into my home. They vandalized my home. They wrote nasty notes on my front door, on my front porch. They jeopardized my safety. They did the same thing to our campaign office. They broke into our campaign office. They vandalized our campaign office. They stole files.

Where are the police reports?

Then there's the piece about her reporting only $5800.00 of earned income. Her rent (on the one residence that's not her super-secret hiding place) is $1k per month, minimum. So that leaves her $6200 in the hole just rent wise.

This is pretty bad. She's an uber conservative on the social issues, but gets an "F" for Fiscal retard.

You're right. I sneaked into Dem party HQ during one of Biden's victories (1990 or 1996). he boasted about defeating the "rich Greenville types". He lives in Greenville, or rather, Montchanin, which is where the social climbers built as close to Greenville as they could.

I don't know about Palin but I would be willing to bet money 1 of our president's is going to be from Alaska or very similar and soon. People are truly longing for a different mentality to emerge in our leaders. It seems to peek out occasionally from different politicians but then they eventually conform. Not in politics really so much as actual personality. Someone is going to resist and they are going to really change this country. We are due for a Teddy Roosevelt type and only a rural conservative can bring that to the table honestly anymore. IMHO.

he fits the suit. I'm not saying Ace believes that. In the 'mind' of the Delaware Republican party, this is all that matters. This state would be far better off if they dropped the pretense of primaries, did a caucus and then supported candidates or left slates open.

Posted by: Blue Hen at September 02, 2010 01:20 PM (R2fpr)

152 I live in VA. Northern VA. Where in 2009 we elected Ken Cuccinelli as AG. And when I canvassed door-to-door in my neighborhoods, I heard that Ken was too conservative to be elected. Scoob, the district Ken represented was arguably the most conservative one left in Northern Virginia (indeed it was the *only* Republican state senate seat left). Ken won his state senate races because he had a great operation which overcame the marginality of the district, but his vote share decreased each time. He likely would have survived in 2011, but not 2015. He won his AG race because Deeds collapsed and McDonnell ran an excellent campaign. Shannon and Wagner were collateral damage. When your party standard bearer goes down by 20 points, it's very hard to make that up. Note that Ken lost Fairfax County while McDonnell won it narrowly (the first statewide candidate to win it since 1997).

154 Please tell me that when I click on a Castle ad, it costs him and the state party money. That would be some small consolation.

Posted by: Blue Hen at September 02, 2010 01:24 PM (R2fpr)

155 *Because Delawarers are nutty. Who knows. But it's what the polls say.* People often times hold up William Roth as an example (of Kemp/Roth & the Roth IRA). The problem is that Roth didn't retire, he *lost*. And the state has only gotten more liberal since then. There are only three counties in Delaware and the population is concentrated in one: Newcastle County, which is also the most liberal. Castle is relatively strong here because he started out here as Newcastle County Executive. He will win Newcastle County and if you do that you almost cannot lose Delaware.

I'm Catholic as well, attend Mass most Sundays and sometimes during the week.

People of any denomination who are hyper-religious are a turn off to me, I've heard Hannity torture one of his regular callers because the kid was living with his girlfriend. Hannity just hammered the guy about "Living In Sin". The caller was taking it in a good-natured way, but Hannity was on some kind of crazy mission, judging by the tone of his voice.

If I were the caller I would have reminded Sean that when I die, it's not Sean Hannity who will be sitting in judgment of my life, but a far more worthy and perfect Being.

The worst part was, this particular caller was a self-described liberal, and probably could have been "flipped" if Hannity had a little more finesse. But he's such a blockhead most of the time.

157 Rocks, there are 3 counties in DE and two of them are fairly conservative or at least Republican. The third county is batshit crazy liberal.

Guess which county holds 80% of the populace.

I know what you are saying. Rosa Delauro is my Representative. But states are not just districts or counties. The right candidate makes people forget what party they belong to. But I would agree with Ace, O'Donnell will never be that candidate. But I would still vote against Castle in a primary. If the Senate comes down to one seat then the Dems are in control anyway. They can flip someone if they try hard enough because there is always a very liberal republican in the Senate and the Dems can offer them unlimited Union cash. I could certainly see castle pulling a Jeffords if he could flip the senate.

158 *Hannity just hammered the guy about "Living In Sin".* Yeah I've heard him do this before too and it is a bit grating. Statistically "shacking up" reduces the chances of a succesful marriage. But Cuccinelli did better than Bolling (Lt.-Gov.), both in my 2:1 Dem precinct and statewide.  Bolling message was not to "break the chain".  If there was a Rep. candidate running on a moderate message, it was Bolling.  And he did less well than Cuccinelli.

163 We have several drama queens in the GOP who would go Specter if it meant they got some more attention. That is why we need a margin of 3-4 so they don't get too cocky.

Posted by: sifty at September 02, 2010 01:36 PM (PJJWW)

164 Scoob, That does not surprise me. I always believed Bolling was the weakest of the three because all he did was essentially coast on McDonnell. It wasn't a moderate message, it was no message. I don't want to pick on Cuccinelli. I disagree with him on certain things and think he brings alot of the froth of the left on himself but I've met him and he's a good guy and overall has been a good AG. The problem I've noticed is whenever I talk to a 'independent' (those mythical creatures) these days the response seems to be "McDonnell seems to be doing OK, What's up with Cuccinelli?". Which I suppose is better than the populace having no knowledge of current events (which seems to be the norm, see the victory of The One) but isn't that good from a VA Republican standpoint. Incidentally, did you see the profile the Washington Post did on Cuccinelli a few weeks back? It was surprisingly favorable. Almost beyond simply "objective" which would have been good enough (since the Post's editorial board clearly hates him with the passion of a thousand suns) but it actually crossed the line almost into puff piece. Not that I'm complaining. I'll take a favorable WaPo piece anytime...but it was...shocking. /sidebar

I disagree with him probably 65% of the time, but he's been invested in the Delaware GOP for his entire life. Even through the dark times over the past few years he personally helped recruit and fund local candidates to keep the legislature from going totally batshit insane. He will vote against us alot of the time and piss us off a lot of the time, but he's not Jumpin' Jim Jeffords. I wish this rumor would die.

183, Chris,

Yes, I saw the puff-piece in the Wash post.  First, the press trys to destroy them, and then they try to co-opt them (maybe I am just being paranoid).  The Wash post has been hostile and has not influenced Ken.  Maybe the Post is trying a different tack to influence him.  Or maybe the reporter is one of a handful of conservatives at the Post.

Regarding independents, what do they think about the moon-bats on the left?  What about Webb's and Warner's vote on Obamacare?  Does that make them too extreme?  In another state, what do they think about moon-beam Jerry Brown?

I am just tired on conservatives being on the defensive about every little detail of their candidates, while the left gets a pass.  If our candidate misspeaks, it is a disaster.  If their candidate misspeaks, it is excused.  I am tired of playing by their rules.

I don't expect universal agreement with conservative candidates.  But who has the nerve to actually file suit and fight the excesses?  Again, actions speak louder than words.  With Cuccinelli, he fights and I am very pleased with him.  I will defend him to the hilt (until he pisses me off ).

Castle has shown his colors with the Cap and Trade and Disclose Act votes.  He will provide cover to the Dems.  He needs to be defeated.

Posted by: Scoob at September 02, 2010 01:45 PM (T7+JL)

170 Scoob, Since I've been critical of him, I will, in fairness, also give you one nugget of information about Ken which is part of what I mean about his "superior organization": He engages people who would not normally vote for him and many of whom probably still don't, but he engages them anyone. The police and fire unions in his senate districts endorsed him more often than not if I recall, not because they agreed with him on everything, but because they felt comfortable with him as he would always make the effort to reach out to them and let them know he was open for discussion. Now, "reaching out" is a cliche in politics and there are some people who are just never going to vote for you (I believe Levin, since he was mentioned in this thread, calls them Drones). But many politicians don't even try and sometimes the results can be surprising. Those same unions endorsed Republican Steve Hunt in that special election this January. Because they loved Hunt? No. Because Hunt talked to them and Dave Marsden didn't even bother. A similar thing is going on with the police & McDonnell. They aren't very happy with the liquor privatization bit, but they are holding their fire (pardon the pun) because they trust him. /sidebar2 *f our candidate misspeaks, it is a disaster. If their candidate misspeaks, it is excused. I am tired of playing by their rules.* Oh I agree with you. It's frustrating as hell. And it's also not fair. But it is reality and it's just what Republicans have to deal with. Should we continue working to change it? Absolutely. But in the meantime Republicans need to bring their A game, that's just the way it is.

171 Mark Levin So the Weekly Standard is now promoting Mike Castle? What kind of interview is this? http://bit.ly/cY0AbJ This stuff has been bouncing all over the Internet today. I saw some of it on Hotair, among other places. Keep tabs, folks. First McCain, now Castle. And by the way, Weekly Standard, how does Castle pay his mortgage/rent? I think we, the taxpayers, pay it, right? What's lost in all of this is we, the people, and the manner in which Castle has supported a fairly radical agenda, regardless of the Weekly Standard's effort to spin it. The mid-terms are crucial for our future, yet some of these folks just cannot give up their old ways. Pathetic.

174 People who think Mike Castle's advantage won't hold up are insane.  Short of the sorts of senility allegations that dogged GOP predecessor Bill Roth, Delawareans LOVE Mike Castle and will happily vote for him as a fitting end to a long career.

You have to remember, Castle wasn't just the state's lone Congressional representative for the past decade, he was a highly popular two-term governor before that.  At this point most Delaware voters feel like they know this guy like they know a favorite uncle.  And Castle probably HAS met damn near every voter in the state: in a small state like DE you win by retail-level campaigning and it's quite literally possible to visit every town and every population center in the state during the course of a single campaign.
