— Ace The heat island effect: The fact that most weather stations have had cities (or towns, at least) grow up around them, so that what once used to be a patch of grass in the shade of trees is now most likely a paved-over heat-absorbing slab of asphalt with building and car exhaust blowing at it all day long.
Critics of claims of catastrophic warming have always pointed out this problem. The weather stations you are using, they say, are simply different than they were in the 1940s. Then, they were in fairly cool, natural places; now, they are largely in urbanized areas, with the heat of human and mechanical activity pumping them with artificial heat all the time.
Oh, don't sweat that, came the response. You see -- we have a study. Our study shows the heat-island effect is no big deal. Not at all! We can use those stations which were once wreathed in shady leaf and now sit upon baking black asphalt with only the most trivial of adjustments.
Yeah, well.
You know how these "studies" tend to be.
Surely the most worrying sign for the thuggish enforcers of "settled science" is that even the eco-lefties at the Guardian and the Independent, two of the most gung-ho warm-mongers on the planet, are beginning to entertain doubts. From the Independent:
Professor Jones and a colleague, Professor Wei-Chyung Wang of the State University of New York at Albany suggested in an influential 1990 paper in the journal Nature that the urban heat island effect was minimal – and cited as supporting evidence a long series of temperature measurements from Chinese weather stations, half in the countryside and half in cities, supplied by Professor Wei-Chyung. . . .However, it has been reported that when climate sceptics asked for the precise locations of the 84 stations, Professor Jones at first declined to release the details. And when eventually he did release them, it was found that for the ones supposed to be in the countryside, there was no location given.
Oh, right. Very scientific. From the Guardian:
It also emerges that documents which Wang claimed would exonerate him and Jones did not exist. . . .Wang said: "I have been exonerated by my university on all the charges. When we started on the paper we had all the station location details in order to identify our network, but we cannot find them any more."
Ah, yes. The old dog-ate-my-tree-rings excuse yet again.
And, as the link notes, this is almost more of a media scandal. Because they allowed these charlatans to claim whatever they liked, so long as it fit the narrative, and thereby encouraged and nurtured the greatest anti-scientific fraud in history.

If you go to surfacestations.org, you can see a very long list of stations with pictures. But even the bulk of the "small village" stations are still way too close to what there is of the village. And yet they get market "Rural."
The themometers that are honestly in the freaking wilderness (at ranger stations, trailheads, etc.) are much flatter than most of the other "rural" stations. And by adding crap stations into the mix, you're diluting the real data so much you can't ever get anything out but pure crap.

I sincerely hope, that all the morons realize that not everyone has the time to get "now for the rest of the story" from the center-right blogs (MSM - forget it!)
I'm sure you've all set up your first tier of email recipients. The truly informed that know the MSM has a liberal agenda, AGW is a crock, etc. You depend on them, to filter the info they pass onto the next level.
Next, I'm sure, you have your 2nd tier email recipients. Not red meaters, but generally there, ie get it. And you trust them to filter to their network.
And so it goes. To fight the Left, and their head pat, lap dog, agenda driven propagandist/media, we need to inform the folks via email. Recall, not everyone has the time, or is politically attuned, to what's "really" happening.
Spread the word. America's citizens are decades away from learning the skills the former Soviet citizens, who were stuck with Pravda, acquired. Sifting thru the shit & lies, to gain a kernel of truth.

The American media companies are completely invested in the AGW narrative, because turning their back on it now would be an admission that their news operations are completely biased and political. Given how much Rupert Murdoch personally believes in AGW, it's a small miracle that he allows Fox News to report the truth on the subject.

As I understand it, their latest argument is that the "heat island effect" must be accounted for because it IS a warmer section of the country and must be worked into the averages.
The problems is how they work it into the averages. In additon, they lose sight of the the purpose of the tracking of the temperatures in the first place. That purpose was to correlate increased temperatures to increases in CO2, not increases in concrete.
As more and more of these revelations come out I have come to the conclusion that NONE of the AGW studies have any scientific validy. They have ALL been adulterated to the point of fraud.
That, however, will not stop the politicians.

Memo:
The disappearance trope has grown old. We need something to appear as the result of global warming AGW, something really nasty and more sinister than a slowly rising sea level, which ultimately makes something disappear anyhow. I recently came across an article in a farmers magazine about how higher temperatures have caused fire ants to move into the Tennessee Valley, but that fucking place just got slammed with about a foot of snow. But you get the idea.
----M
Re the above:
You can bet your Brit ass something has appeared, reappeared to be precise, as the result of AGW. It is my erection. You can read about it or actually see it if you happen to be a dark-skinned nubile who inhabits the subcontinent.
Your point is taken, though. Some undergrads reminded me recently about the correlation between bong hits and alien sightings. We don't need Spielberg aliens but mean, nasty bastards like the ones who took Travis Walton in the last reel of Fire in the Sky. The hot undergrad I nailed claimed there were fewer aliens now that AGW has Mother Gaia in its grip but we could just flip that theory. On the other hand, to use your insect example, cockroaches live in all weather extremes and would fit an appearance theory regardless of the temp. And if this freaking cold keeps up we can continue to claim it too is the result of AGW and will draw polar bears south into Harvard Commons. We are talking about real flesh eating bears now, not the cute cuddly Coke commercial ones drowning and all. I can hear your mind clicking: same thing as the alien approach but more plausible.
I'll scour some term papers I graded a few years back for more ideas.

Memo update:
Along the same lines, the lost excuse also needs to be replaced.

Sahib, I planted a spy story just the other day to explain how those emails got out. You know, the ones that went public after we got drunk and sent them to websites rather than the newspaper and television reporters who are in on this goof. What do spies do? Well, one thing spies do well is steal vital information. You get the point.
Lighten up. They really ran with the spy email hack crap and laughed as much as I did. You Brits are way too tight-assed. In fact, an impotent version of you will be a character in my next bodice ripper.

I think the atmosphere is just about right, and we should start thinking about doing something about that pesky moon, before the only thing we have to eat, are liberals.
Not that I mind, but we need a lot more efficient methods of trapping them. ~Docjohn52
I say we use leg hold traps baited with lattes, or alternately, you could string marlin fishing line at neck level across bicycle paths.

The whole AGW arguement is arrogance-- Mankind has very little power over the earth-- what man creates, Mother Nature -- or God-- can destroy (or restore) in seconds or minutes...
