Oh, No: Stupak to Hold Press Conference Announcing Vote at 4pm
— Ace

This probably means he's going to announce a deal for his vote, and that Barack Obama's executive order is plenty enough for him, and that he's a yes.

As Drew's been writing, Stupak really wants to vote for the bill -- in fact, Drew keeps saying he's willing to pay Nancy Pelosi for the privilege of doing so.

Incidentally, Obama's EO cannot overturn the law. (Or at least that used to be the case, when we lived in a Republic.) If the law says x, a contradicting EO saying Y is null and void.

Even if there is some way to avoid a contradiction there, a subsequent law explicitly overruling the EO would trump it. And Democrats have a majority for that.

11 I mentioned 2 theories before.  One is that he wanted to vote for this bill so much but the Catholic bishops tore off his fig leaf.  So he's just going to announce his vote and announce the "deal" without anybody getting a chance to complain until it's too late.

The second?  The bloc is not holding and they won't be united.  My basis is Marcy Kaptur's defection early this morning.  She didn't want to wait on the bloc to decide.

But I am as pessimistic as Ace, I think the bloc will split and it will be enough for Nancy.

28 Stupak, like most of the Democrats, is a socialist first and anything else after that.  Morality and his belief in the doctrines of the Catholic Church mean less to him than the chance to take control of the economy.  If he says he accepts Obama's executive order to prevent funding of abortion, he is a liar.  The Catholic Church has already said it will not prevent public funding of abortion.  Stupak simply can't resist the opportunity to take control of the economy.

He is a liar.

72 More and more relevant are the words of de Tocqueville, via the modern miracle of copypasta: (Soft despotism) covers the surface of society with a net-work of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided: men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting: such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to be nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd.

He is NOT an idiot!

He is a craven liar who claims to care for unborn children, but it's bullshit to both get him elected in his district and to fit in socially at his club church.

He wanted to vote for this bill, he did. He got what he knows is a useless fig leaf that will leave multitudes of bloody murdered babies in its wake.

And he's 100% okay with that.

100%.

If I'm paying the subsidy on any insurance  policy that does so, it's a no go.

Rule #1:  Democrats are LIBERALS above all else.  LIBERALS.

Rule #2:  Any supposed moderate stance they hold is always subject to Rule #1.

As I've be posting for a week or so, this is going to pass.  If not today, next week.  If not next week, next month.

What is the R leadership prepared to do to fight the next battle?

Organized protests and mass refusal to submit to the law followed by a blizzard or court challenges?

Dear Congressman Stupak,

I'm not a member of your congressional district, but a pro-life Catholic.  I've had faith in you, over these many weeks, that you would vote NO against this Health Care bill, which in spite of all the promises and gimmicks, will in the end, provide Federal funds for abortion.

You may protest that this Bill will not do so, but God will know.  Which you chose.  A HC bill, over the weakest of his children.  I'll pray for your immortal soul.  It didn't help Senator Kennedy, who on his death bed, asked the Pope for forgiveness.  An underling instead responded.  Wishing you the strength, to accept God's judgement.

I'll pray for you, nonetheless.
