Oh What A Difference 22 Months Make
— DrewM

Remember this little gem from Kos?

Break their back, crush their spirits

See, here's the deal -- we're going to win the White House, we're going to win big in the Senate, and we're going to rack up big gains in the House. Republicans know this and are preparing for the worst. Now think of 2004 -- we really thought Kerry was going to pull it off. Remember that? And remember how utterly devastated we were when Bush pulled it off? The pain was so much worse because we expected to win.

So with conservatives bracing for the worse, they won't experience the kind of pain we did. Not unless we deliver a defeat even worse than their worst nightmares. And I'll be honest with you -- I want them to hurt as much as we did. I want their spirits crushed, their backs broken.

So the way we do that is we deliver a defeat worse than they ever imagined. We do that by winning states that have no business turning Blue -- like North Carolina, Georgia, Indiana, and so on -- states that were easy Bush victories in 2004. We do that by electing a 60-seat supermajority in the Senate. We do that by defeating their leadership, like Mitch McConnell in the Senate. We do that by defeating their heroes, like wingnut go-to hero John Shadegg. We do that by making sure a record number of Americans reject conservative ideology, leaving it utterly discredited.

The day after the election, I want to see an electoral battlefield littered with defeated Republicans, their ranks demoralized, their treasury in heavy debt, and no real leadership to take the helm. I want a vacuum so complete, that a bloody leadership battle between the neocons, theocons, and corporate cons shakes the GOP to its core, and leaves it fractured and ill-equipped to stymie the progressive agenda, much less ramp up for an even bleaker (for them) 2010.

There's more but I like freezing on the idea 2010 will be "even bleaker" for the GOP than 2008.

Let's check in with NutRoots 2010 to see, shall we?

Signs that all is not well showed up in other places. Many of those in attendance openly expressed concern that President Obama is losing momentum in pushing their causes. "I've definitely never heard more cursing by speakers at a political conference than at Netroots Nation," Philip Klein of the American Spectator told me. Markos Moulitsas, the founder of the liberal website DailyKos, railed against "bullshit Democrats" at last night's kickoff event. He urged Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer to run in the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate in 2012, when moderate Democratic Senator Max Baucus will presumably be seeking re-election. Mr. Baucus is blamed by liberals for sinking the chances of a "public option" in this year's health care bill.

Mr. Moulitsas was preceded by Ed Schultz, the liberal host who appears daily on MSNBC. He divided his speech between appeals to liberals to "stick it" to "ruthless, callous, rotten-to-the core Republicans" and raging about his disappointment with the Obama administration. "The White House has a war room. I think they have a sissy room too," he told attendees. At times he sounded like a spurned suitor. "I busted my ass for Obama," he said. "He don't come to Ed, he goes [and gives an interview] to Bret Baier on Fox News in my time slot."

As the man says, Heh.

I think the left does protest too much. I mean they got health care, blown up baseline domestic spending (and deficits) as far as the eye can see thanks to a useless 'stimulus' plan and grabbed a boat load of power through "Wall Street Reform". They are also making inroads on Don't Ask, Don't Tell, ending our involvement in Iraq and while they didn't get Cap and Trade, they can now move on to EPA regulations which will likely be worse than what Congress would have passed. Oh and don't forget two unimpressive but reliably liberal Supreme Court Justices.

Sure they didn't get total control of the health care syste but unless the monstrosity that did pass is repealed, it will just be a matter of time until they do. They also haven't gotten immigration amnesty or across the board tax increases but the latter is likely coming down the pike soon enough.

And yes, We're still in Afghanistan but that's as much their fault as anyone's. They are the ones who spent 5 years bitching about The Good and Necessary War (Afghanistan) vs. Bad Imperialism for Oil (Iraq). Gys, don't get pissed because people took you seriously. Beside, no matter what he says, Obama is pulling the plug on that next year in order to run on some sort of "victory" in '12.

It's natural that the base always wants more, especially given the margin of their victories, but it's not too shabby.

(See the update for a fuller list of so-called Obama "accomplishments")

Even with all of that, it's obvious that the reports of the Republican party's demise were premature. The question is, what will they do when if they get all the levers back in 2012?

Right now, Republicans aren't saying much and that's ok. The Democrats are unpopular and we should ride that wave this year since even if we win both houses this year, the impact will be limited while Obama is in office. Remember how often Bush rolled the Reid/Pelosi gang for two years? Presidents matter.

Still, at some point, the Republicans are going to have to layout a more positive agenda of what they will do if given another chance.

Until then, enjoy the tears of Kos and his friends. They are tasty. And good for you.

Update: Via Allah, Obama addresses Nutroots via video. Note the "greatest hits" clip package in the middle courtesy of MSNBC.

But FNC is a propaganda arm of the GOP.

Alas poor Rorick.......They will never learn. When they have a chance to rule they fuck it up so badly and act like such douchebags that they lose. Republicans only lose when there has been a major scandal or when the market has to correct itself or when they act too much like the left.

That being said, I think they have major inroads in making the american population lazy and stupid as dirt.

9 You laugh, but Democrats in 2008 sound no different to me than Republicans in 2004.  Remember all that talk about "permanent Republican majority"?

The worm turns.  As much as I'm gonna enjoy this election (and hopefully the one in 2012), I've been around long enough to know the Trent Lotts and Denny Hasterts will eventually get control again and mess everything up.

The republicans are not out to destroy the country and provide reparations for the world. They have no desire to create a one world marxist government and, through environmental regulations, take us back to the 15th century. They may contain arrogant douchebags but I'm somewhat heartened by thinking that public school educated non-reading public might realize that people like Pelosi and Obama are out to control them, not out to provide them with a utopia.

I also think this "racist" crap has about run it's course. They elected Obama because they thought it would heal the wound, but instead he has made it fester and pus, dripping its acrid stench into every tile of the public square. Excising it and its putrid purveyors is obviously the only answer and I hope it happens soon before the hawkers of this consumptive disease sell it to another generation.

The thing that gives me hope is that the next generation of young people has more kids from conservative families than from liberal ones.  Let's face it - the Left has pretty much guaranteed their "power" demise simply by virtue of the fact that more of them either abort their babies and/or have fewer children than those of us on the Right.

They still haven't figured out that you have to keep reproducing in large enough numbers to replenish your stock.  Also, one of their "core" constituencies - blacks - have such high numbers of abortions that they have pretty much guaranteed themselves a permanent minority status.  There are a LOT of black conservatives who have several kids per family that they are raising up to be conservative as well.

And what the Left REALLY doesn't understand is that if they allow a lot of illegal aliens to come here and take up residence, pretty soon their progressive agenda is going to be co-opted into a Hispanic agenda, because there will be more of them in the Democrat party than any other ethnic group - whites included.

A LOT of Hispanics are conservative, which is good for our side as well.  All around, I'd say that the Progressive agenda is going to die a well-deserved death over the next couple of decades.....

The more recent influx from Cuba and South/Latin America is a VERY different story, and we all know the deal with immigration from across our own southern border.

How "progressivism" came to be:

With the decline of clerical power in the 18th century, a new

kind of mentor emerged to fill the vacuum and capture the ear

of society. The secular intellectual might be deist, sceptic or

atheist. But he was just as ready as any pontiff or presbyter

to tell mankind how to conduct its affairs. He proclaimed, from

the start, a special devotion to the interests of humanity and an

evangelical duty to advance them by his teaching. He brought

to this self-appointed task a far more radical approach than his

clerical predecessors. He felt himself bound by no corpus of

revealed religion. The collective wisdom of the past, the legacy of

tradition, the prescriptive codes of ancestral experience existed to

be selectively followed or wholly rejected entirely as his own good

sense might decide. For the first time in human history, and with

growing confidence and audacity, men arose to assert that they

could diagnose the ills of society and cure them with their own

unaided intellects: more, that they could devise formulae whereby

not merely the structure of society but the fundamental habits of

human beings could be transformed for the better. Unlike their

sacerdotal predecessors, they were not servants and interpreters

of the gods but substitutes. Their hero was Prometheus, who stole

the celestial fire and brought it to earth.

Paul Johnson,

Intellectuals, 1988.

It's going to take more than two or three elections to roll this crap back. It will take a generation to try to restore the country to where it SHOULD be, and that's if we are lucky.

Losing a couple of electoral cycles will not fundamentally change the Democratic party.  It will take years in the wilderness, and an objective media, for them to gain some introspection and for some kind of respectability return to their party. They have ruled the Congress for most of the last 78 years (since 1932).  Even when there were periods when the Republicans gained control of the Senate (a couple of times) and the House (in '94), they did not have a strong enough majority (and a President, in '94)  that was willing to roll up the sleeves and undo the entitlements and socialism/statism that is part of the present Federal Government.

Face it, people loves them entitlements. The people are going to have to totally rethink the nature of the Government before we can make any real progress.

I fear my blood pressure is going to be rather high when my son is in high school. I just hope that I'm giving him a good grounding now in conservative ideas and in questioning everything, so that by the time he gets ot high school he won't be swayed.

Of course I have this year's 3rd grade social studies curriculum ahead of me, which could cause me to finally "out" myself fully at the school if it goes as poorly as I fear it is going to. (They'll be learning about how people can change communities--Cesear Chavez is one of the case studies. Also learning about global trade and the effects on other countries.)

I moved my son from an english class taught by a vet who had graduated from the citidel-------he said his favorite book was "Native Son" and that's all it took. Can't trust the biographies on some of these people----gotta wait to see what comes out of their mouths

59 I believe that the "conservative hispanic" myth is based on the original Cuban immigrants to South Florida.

I thought it came from the large percentage of Hispanics with blue & white robed Virgin Mary statues in their landscaping.

It appears to me that Obama and the left have succeeded in implementing large portions of the progressive agenda. And I have little confidence in the GOP's ability to reverse their gains. Republican Party politicians by and large lack the courage and the will and the intellect to do what needs to be done. They are weasels, most of them. Even if they gain control of Congress in November they'll probably blow it, just like they always do. Just watch. Repeal ObamaCare? Yeah, sure. I'll believe it when I see it.

Obama carried about 3/4 of the "Hispanic" vote, and when you back the Cuban immigrant community out of that equation and just count Mexicans and Central Americans, you hit a number that is slightly over 90%.

If you think European Socialism is bad, just wait until you get a whiff of Central American Socialism!

One of the fundamental problems we face is that a conservative politician is something of an oxymoron.

Liberalism is about power - so it makes sense that liberals will be attracted to public office. And for those with a bit more slick then business sense, the corruptocrat route also works well. But why would someone who disdains government power want to really work hard to acquire...to then minimize it?

Posted by: 18-1 at July 24, 2010 04:53 PM (bgcml)

68 Oh I should also say that part of my fear is because both 3rd grade teachers are very openly liberal--one still had her Obama/Biden sticker on her car at the end of the school year. So, whichever teacher my son gets, I'm pretty much guaranteed a liberal slant.

This.  As Derbyshire says, both parties are taking us to the same place.  It's just that Democrats are taking us there at a faster pace.  Anybody who thinks the government is going to shrink by one dollar as a result of Republican victory is delusional.

That's why the Tea Party is so important.  It's a real social movement that has the potential to get people thinking about that "nature of government."

75 Appropriate to the weekend on which the movie Salt premieres, Kos and Co. do their best imitation of Veruca Salt.  Despite all the goodies they got from their filibuster-proof Senate and their Progressive majority in the House, they focus instead on those items on their wish list that didn't get delivered.

This is their recipe for snatching defeat from the jaws of victory: rather than use their crushing majorities to crush their enemies' will even further, they did as Leftist movements always do and turned their anger inward against "splitters," "cowards" and "squishes."  Of course, all of this could have been avoided if Obama's and Pelosi's policies actually worked -- which is to say that this disaster for the nutroots was inevitable.

Of course I have this year's 3rd grade social studies curriculum ahead of me, which could cause me to finally "out" myself fully at the school if it goes as poorly as I fear it is going to.

Guess you're going back to school. Parents shouldn't have to read their children's textbooks just to see how they can combat the bias.

I told my daughter it was a pack of lies and to not believe a word of it. Of course she went back to school and told the teacher. The teacher said they would not be covering that chapter and to let me know that.

If my kid came home with that Howard Zinn history book I would be parked at the school board the next day - Vic

I thought about this a long time. And later I found out I was not alone in thinking this.  But I read parts of the book along with my son, and we had a lot of talks about what the book was about (leftist revisionism), rather than "true history".  I've read enough history to realize that there is more than one point of view, and sometimes shades of gray, but I decided to use this to teach my son a different lesson.

I had some success, but he is still young (just 16) and impressionable. Like most kids of his generation, he is going to be exposed to this crap for most of his young adult life, and he has to learn how to handle it, and learn for himself why it is a pack of lies, why it is destructive.  What it means to be an "American", and not just a member of the "lumpenproletariat" to be manipulated by others.  This is  a tough lesson we are all going to have to work to impart on our children if we are to take back our country. At some point, they are going to have to pick up the fight.

I do know that he ended the school year with a rather low opinion of his AP History teacher.  That, in itself, was a minor victory for reality. And yes, I do have a copy of Johnson's "Modern Times" on my bookshelf.  I am going to get him to read it someday soon, along with a few other history books I've got.

Uphill all the way.

130 Liberals explained: They HATE themselves...seriously...and therefore they hate everybody else.
It's human nature...if you are not happy with yourself it shows in your attitudes towards others. "I'm worthless...and SO ARE YOU!"

Posted by: truth at July 24, 2010 08:54 PM (XSD4n)

Consider an alternative explanation.  Liberals regard themselves highly and they especially are convinced that they are right about how the world ought to work.  In the aftermath of the 2008 elections, they naturally assumed that the economy would be fixed instantly, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan would end immediately, Gitmo would be shut down promptly, and they would be lauded as heroes of the working man and woman for bringing them the bounty of free health care.

What actually happened was pretty much the exact opposite of all that.  And not only are they faced with the fact that their favored policies have failed to fix the economy or end the wars or even shut Gitmo, they are faced with the fact that the voters are crapping all over the wonderful health care gift the Liberals got for them.

So what's a Liberal to do?  He can't admit that the conservatives are right.  And he certainly can't admit that he was and is wrong.  So the only thing left to do is to blame the people he elected for being incompetent and not doing the Liberal agenda right -- because no other explanation makes sense to them.

135 Thomas Sowell talks about the rejection of religion and history and the acceptance of the social planner in "Visions of the Annointed". It's interesting to note that Thomas Aquinas partly gave rise to the enlightenment by attempting to prove that man could find truth using his God given reason. That concept had previously been lacking in a complete subjugation to revelation. With the rediscovery of the classical works during the crusades and the advent of european philosophers, the social engineer was born. Those that rejected history and sought responsibility free utopias led to the greatest blood baths in history, Those that accepted history and responsibility created something once great. I've always noted that the "-isms" which dismiss the individual for the sake of the collective believe in man's intrinsic barbarism while those that protect the individual believe in man's intrinsic worth. The barbarian must be controlled by the state and the worthy individual can live in liberty. Interestingly, individual leftists are amoral barbarians, fucktards, murderers, and assholes.

My son is 13 and for most of his 'tween years through now, he has been hit with a wall of liberal crap at school.  We're in SC, so I don't think it's quite as rapid a indoctrination as some other parts of the country though.  But the saving grace for our kids is going to be us.  My son is decidedly conservative, has a view of liberals that rivals Mark Levin and his red flag goes up at school all the time.  He knows bullshit when he hears it.  He's not quite at the stage to "argue" with his teachers, but I'm hoping he'll hone his skills as the years go by.  I firmly believe that if we reach our kids at home with those conservative ideals we hold dear, they will have the armor necessary to repel that crap when it is spewed in the classroom.

Spot on back at you.  The Liberals will cling to "I blame Bush" like my college-graduating daughter clings to the stuffed bunny she got on the day after she was born, and for the same reason: they need the security.  But the rest of the electorate, people whose very identity isn't bound up in the rightness of Liberalism, are already wondering when the vaunted Obama magic is going to kick in.  Using Obama's preferred metaphor, the voters are way past caring who drove the economy into the ditch: they called for a tow truck back in November 2008, and it hasn't shown up yet.

And we have to be all over that like a wet t-shirt.

If you have any spare time, get involved with local elections. Don't be pushy, just make sure it's fair. Volunteer to help, don't make a big presence of yourself, just keep your ears open.

Also, if you can do things like, when they have their local Craigslist "help elect 5 billion commies" ads, and they have orientation meetings, go find out what's going on there. Maybe just listen real attentively and say you may not have enough time but you'll get back to them.

If it turns out to be the Organization Formerly Known As ACORN, they have an awful habit of running their mouths about their plans, maybe something you can have the proper authorities follow up on.

Speaking of proper authorities, it would be a good time to find out who they are and start pestering them about cases we've already heard about that nothing has been done about, and get ready to pester them about new cases.

You're dead on, they WILL cheat, they always do, we just need to make them accountable.
