— Ace At Wired:
Late last year, O’Keefe and fellow activist Joe Basel went into the Detroit and Chicago offices of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) with a hidden camera. They pretended to be scam artists, asking employees there to participate in a complex kickback scheme involving federal incentives for first-time home buyers. In the excerpted footage shown to me by O’Keefe, the staffers seemed only to happy to comply. The law says that the tax credit maxes out at $8,000 for an $80,000 home. On the tape, O’Keefe asked a staffer, “What if I bought a place for $50,000, but the seller and I agreed to write down $80,000 as the purchase price?”
“Flip it any way you want,” the staffer replied.
What if the place is worth much less — like only $6,000?
“Yup, you can do that.”
Thanks to WQ.
Leftists are having conniptions in the comments, there, insisting the tapes were edited, O'Keefe broke federal laws, should be in prison, etc.
As Mark Twain said, “It ain't what you don't know that gets you into trouble. It's what you know for sure that just ain't so.”
BLAST! I thought that was a Will Rogers quote -- but when I looked it up to get the quote right, everyone on the internet attributed it to Mark Twain.
For what that's worth.
There's some disagreement on that -- Wiki notes that there's no good source to base attributing it to Twain, and some attribute it to Will Rogers.
I don't know who actually said it. I know I thought it was Will Rogers.

Seepage is the new tingle:
OÂ’Keefe and fellow activist Joe Basel ran the same sting at HUDÂ’s Chicago office and at several federally supported independent housing groups. Breitbart paces the parquet floor. The video is damning but not exactly Acorn-explosive.
Then O’Keefe stops the playback. “Oh yeah, I forgot,” he says. “We went to the Detroit Free Press, to the managing editor. We told her the whole thing. She said she wasn’t interested. Wanna see the tape?”
Breitbart starts to cackle. Of course he wants to see the tape. Sleazy HUD administrators are important, sure. But media covering up sleaze? That’s entertainment. “Dude, that’s the most important part!” he says. “I have seepage coming out of five parts of my body right now.”
O’Keefe hits Play. A world-weary Freep editor listens to O’Keefe’s kickback story and politely declines. There could be a thousand reasons why, but to O’Keefe and Breitbart, there’s only one explanation: liberal bias. Breitbart slaps the walls like they were congo drums, grinning. “OK,” he tells O’Keefe, “now I officially adore you.”
Please, no tickle parties.

Holy shit this is hilarious. It's just a short term solution, though. ACORN has too many scandals for this to work for long. In the end, it looks like O'Keefe told the truth and ACORN used liberal MSM to smear and lie. that makes O'Keefe look more impressive and more credible the next time someone claims he lied.
The GOP House will have a fucking field day with this. It's obvious that the White House stopped the investigation and we all know Obama worked with these thugs. And we know ACORN thugs lie and contradict themselves quite a bit. That's all it takes to start sending them to prison. Laugh all day, democrats, about how easy it is to spin when you have one party rule. When you don't, and you won't, that kind of thing backfires badly. The pieces are in place for a very very scandal filled 2011 and 2012 for the white house. All it takes in one independent council, and the 'they found no criminal wrongdoing!' crap goes away pretty damn quickly.
Obama's only edge in 2012 is that he's the experienced president in our turbulent times and we shouldn't take a chance on Paul Ryan/Sarah Palin/Whoever. If he looks like an incompetent scandal clad loser, he can't be reelected and the democrats lose the Senate too.

Where can you buy a house for 80K?
Cook County, Illinois.
In some areas of Chicago (Pullman, Ford City) and some surrounding townships like Robbins, you can purchase a home for as low as $5,000.00.
I'm guessing some places in East Chicago, IN, Gary, IN, East St. Louis, IL, or Detroit, MI don't exactly have soaring real estate values either.
Hell, they want to turn Detroit in farmland.
But even in nice peaceful middle-class suburbs with high property values you can sometimes get small lots for $80,000.00 or less, provided the house is basically a tear-down.

I like the way the Wired story on Breitbart ends:
He takes a breath. “They call us tea-baggers. They call us racist, sexist, homophobic, and we are finally punching back. It’s over, dude. It’s over. You think you’re gonna be able to put the genie back in the bottle? It’s over. And if you don’t like my aggression, there are going to be millions more of me,” Breitbart says, the cell phone connection skipping in and out. “Because the new media provides the tools and there are millions out there who are outraged. Now they realize, ‘Wow, anybody can do that. We can hold these people accountable. We have the means. We have the technology.’”

It's a really good deal, and it's a shame HUD doesn't give a shit about integrity. It's just more government cheese.
And one really interesting aspect is that it locks down professionals and others into a geographic area during an economic downturn. One of the most important aspects of being OK when laid off is being able to relocate to a new job. If you get one of these $8000 checks, you can't move for 3 years without a huge penalty.
That's bad for the economy.

He just said that everyone would know that Joe Biden is what everyone already knows Joe Biden to be.With that in mind, CNSNews.com asked Senator Hatch: “What about the notion that if (Democrats) try to pursue reconciliation on health care that Vice President Biden might be able to break whatever parliamentary procedure you—”
Hatch said, “He’d have to be very careful there. He’d go down in history as a real dolt if he started to play that game. That’s why you have parliamentarians. And, you know, the worry is: Will the parliamentarian be fair? I don’t have any worry about that. I believe that Alan Frumin or the other parliamentarians will be fair. But there’ll be a lot of pressure on them.”

The propane company indeed installed the tanks and pipes, as is pretty standard for gas companies, at least in this part of the state.
They didn't own the original land. What appears to have occurred is that the company that developed the land gets a kickback.
But this is a pretty extreme example. People in Texas having $200 gas bills in July is just unfair. While the deed restrictions are there to read, and no one is willing to buy these houses anymore because most of them use professionals at some point who won't let them (including mortgage officers), it's still destroyed a part of town. The deed restrictions do not make clear what the price for propane is going to be, and if you call the propane company ( I did), they refuse to tell you or show you their contract until you own a house they service.
Just an extreme example. It didn't burn me, and I don't see anyone buying these houses, but it still was devious and ugly. People buying a new home, especially a smaller one, should be able to rely on their developer to not completely screw them (and when the house is unsellable, I think that's screwing). I don't want to name names, but one investor of the development company is a significant Texas state level politician.
One the one hand, you have to take personal responsibility and avoid this kind of crap on your own. On the other, these people were snakes who hurt a lot of Texan families. Always be extra careful when looking over your deed restrictions to make sure you aren't getting something you aren't cool with. I managed to get a much better investment property that didn't even have an HOA (which are pretty worthless in this part of Texas, and usually associated with the lesser, dirtier neighborhoods rather than the nicer ones). But there's always some element of risk in any purchase. You can't to a truly thorough inspection most of the time, you can't know everything about the neighbors. While dealing with jerks is part of life, I still think the jerks should be tarred and feathered.
what happened to this neighborhood is not OK with any decent person. Should the government intervene? I don't like that solution, but the argument can easily be made in this extreme case.

That is one of the things your lawyer is supposed to do when you get a title search. He is supposed to protect you from such shit is this. Also, if they are hiding this crap in a manner that makes it hard for new buyers to know what they are "buying" it should be fairly easy to break the deed covenants.
Once any single deed covenant is broken in the development, then they ALL become unenforcable.

The propane company indeed installed the tanks and pipes, as is pretty standard for gas companies, at least in this part of the state.
What would happen if you bought the place and converted it to natural gas or electric or used kerosene heaters, and said, OK, I'm buying my propane from them... but I didn't use any propane this year. Or last. Or the one before.
I mean seriously you're in Texas. You think you know what 'cold' means but you don't. It don't get cold there. You don't really even need heat.

Posted by: Entropy"Believe it or not, the deed restricts this. You have to have a specified number of propane appliances, and you have to use them.
you're right that you don't actually need heat 350 days a year in this location, but you do need a water heater and perhaps an oven. Anyway, even if you use zero propane, your contract has a fee every month. If you remove too many propane appliances, they apparently have the power to find out (how, I do not know), and you owe them a penalty AND must reinstall propane appliances.
I talked to a few people in the neighborhood, just walking through, and asked this exact question to several of them. At the end of the day, it is just easier to stop paying for the house and walk away, which I think is highly dishonorable, but that's how people operate. As you can imagine, this neighborhood was not filled with software engineers and professors, though the houses were very nice.
Buyer beware. Always talk to people in a neighborhood before you buy a house there, and you can't underline enough that there is no such thing as a free lunch. The houses are ridiculously cheap in this neighborhood for a reason.
I don't begrudge utilities for expecting some kind of penalty if you disconnect service, actually. My current gas company has a similar restriction in the house I live in (though they don't charge a ridiculous rate, they just want to get their initial investment back).
I'm going way way way too long on this issue. There are a lot of scams out there. I just noted an example of what it takes to get a nice house down to $80,000, since that's what I was going to offer on a house in this neighborhood before I realized I'd never be able to sell the house.
Posted by: throwaway handle at March 11, 2010 12:57 PM (dUOK+)
Indeed, anyone who buys a house without a lawyer is really asking for trouble. It's worth the few hundred. There's a chance this case will indeed get the deed restrictions dropped (that was part of my thinking when I was tossing the idea of buying the house around, but it just was too unsure a bet, to say the least). But it's still a strange neighborhood. Most of the houses have sale signs, few of them have mowed yards, a lot of the people living there are, frankly, not good neighbors. It's not on my top hundred lists of things to get worked up about... just another scammer fucking up a lot of stuff. But it still pisses me off. I've heard of a lot of HOA complaints, but usually it's just petty silly shit most people can live with.
And here's another problem with pushing people to buy a house with a huge check from Uncle Sugar. People getting into something this huge should take their time and think it through. Renting is a loser for most families in the long term, but if you can't put a down payment together, rent.

But there's another warning that people buying property in Texas should heed, although this will piss people off - Be *Very* *Very* careful if you ever buy any land or housing outside of an incorporated city or town. Make sure and hire good professional help if you do. This doesn't mean it's a bad idea, but you have to protect yourself because no one else will.
People from other states don't realize that there are almost *no* standards or controls for residential housing in unincorporated areas. The TCEQ does make sure that your septic systems are installed correctly, because dumping raw sewage is just nasty, but other than that there aren't many rules. Texas decided to allow incorporated cities to do all of the zoning and housing regulations, which means outside of those city limits pretty much anything goes. The State doesn't get involved, and the county level of government is so pathetically weak that it's hard to come up with a reason they even exist. (Texas Counties do county roads, the sheriffs dept, the county jail, and whatever county courts are necessary. That's it.)
A lot of developers who set up outside of any incorporated areas are doing so for just this reason. They'll say it's because it's cheaper - and it is, because not having to deal with any inspectors or codes is always way cheaper. It also makes it trivially easy to cut corners and rip your buyers off, and that happens a hell of a lot.

Up until a few years ago we didn't even have codes in the "incorporated areas". Yes, some builders cut corners in a few places but there are still laws in place regarding builder responsibility for work. All in all, everyone knew who tended to cut corners and who the reputable builders were.
We now have codes and a code enforcer. Nothing gets built any better and the county gets a new code fee. It turns out to be nothing more than another tax.

A few weeks ago at a Canadian national newspaper site, asshole Kilgore Trout was the first commenter. And no, he didn't use the n-word and try to have the site declared a racist Klan site and voluntarily close itself down by way of apology.
And I think that you're right about it having been a Will Rogers' quote, Ace. The inflection of the quote seems out of period to me for the (mainly) late 19th Century.

You mean the farms? Check out the Omnibus Farm Bill. It is the single largest piece of graft and corruption in effect in America, and it is politically untouchable.

I need an email or contact for James O'Keefe.
I have a young conservative college blogger here in the Mahoning Valley of Ohio trying to blow the lid off HUD here, and an ACORN group under another name associated with it.
Anyone?
