I drove my morcycle through the Alameda/Oakland tunnel drunk at > 100 mph and inching closer and closer to the wall as I hit the bumps between sections.
Also drove up Mt. Talmapias (?) drunk hitting the curves so hard I was drawing rooster tails from the stand dragging.
Used to be crazy on a bike.

Is it worth reducing the next generation of Americans to indentured servitude to pay for this poor New Yorker's dentured servitude? Yes. Because government health care is not about health care, it's about government.
Once you look at it that way, what the Dems are doing makes perfect sense. For them.

A couple times we froze in terror on the cliff-face, unable to retreat, and too fearful to make the necessary stretch for the next handhold. We should have fallen to our deaths or at least required the assistance of rescue helicopters. But somehow, we inched our way to the top, and lived to laugh about it.
That was about 25 years ago.

In a suicide attempt, when you fire the first 2-inch nail into your own head with a nail-gun and you don't die, what do you do? Keep going until you get lucky? At what point do you decide that it's not working and give it up as a bad job? Then how long do you leave it until you go and get medical attention?
The man pictured here, high on methamphetamine, shot 12 nails into his own head, even reloading the nail gun once when the nails ran out. He then left it a further day before going to hospital and complaining of 'headache.'
As a bonus, the man now holds the record for surviving the largest number of foreign objects ever purposefully penetrated into the skull.
Sounds like a Moron.™

Sitting in a storm drain, waiting for a summer monsoon to pass in Tucson, Az.
And about a quarter-mile from the enterance in said drain. And we heard the water coming.
Lemme tell you, that water rises really, really fast. Like in 30 seconds it goes from your ankles to your mid-thighs. And man, is that current strong...
Damn we were lucky to get out of that one. Oh, and no way in hell you could swim that if your feet had gotten knocked out from under you.

A guy I worked with at IBM took three in the ass in Vietnam. He was sitting on his helmet at the time. If he'd been sitting on the ground they'd have shattered his spine and he'd be a KIA or at minimum a paraplegic. Funny how a few inches one way or the other makes all the difference sometimes.

Palin fits right it with the average American.
----
As she has been before, Palin was critical of some of the coverage she received when running with John McCain, and said her patience wore thin with the "mainstream media."
She noted a reporter told her she had a Canadian accent. Palin said she responded, "So?"
"That interview didn't go very well," Palin told Saturday's crowd. "Not many of them did."

I took an unexpected swim in the Gulf of Alaska in 1985. The weather was fairly snotty with sustained winds at about 60 gusting to around 80. Seas were running around 20 feet or so. I was in for about 20 minutes.
Took me about 6 hours to quit shaking.

Naa, the rigger who packs my reserve is top notch. If you could frame a pack job and display it as a work of art, his are. Those three I had were early on. Its been over 500 jumps now since I've had to use "Plan B".
With more experience, I might have been able to land two of them. The third was really hopeless - the canopy blew apart into flapping shreds on deployment (turned out to be a bad batch of fabric from the mill and it was happening to everyone who had one of those)

We were going into what we were told was a 'cold' LZ. It wasn't. I was sitting in the door with my legs on the skid. As rounds went into the fuselage, the guy behind me stiff-armed me in the back and I started to pitch forward. Problem. We were still about 20 feet off the deck. Guy realized this, grabbed my harness and pulled me back. To this day the bastard says I'm "ungrateful" for him 'saving my life'.

"Oscar Rodriguez of Las Vegas, Nev., was labeled a hero by firefighters and paramedics for helping them communicate with non-English speaking passengers just after Friday's pre-dawn crash on an interstate.
They presented him with gifts and a certificate that reads "Hero of the day" during a visit with him at a Phoenix hospital Saturday.
"This kid stayed calm and was brave more than any other veteran I've worked with," said Kenneth Leslie, a paramedic who, with his partner, was the first to arrive at the scene."
"Federal transportation officials said the bus, owned by Van Nuys, Calif.-based Tierra Santa Inc., was operating illegally. The company was told in April and again in December not to transport passengers across state lines.
The Arizona Department of Public Safety has wrapped up its investigation, and spokesman Bart Graves said details will be released sometime next week."
the article says all the passengers who were injured were taken to area hospitals. Seems like no one asked if they had insurance coverage?

Look what unrequited love can do to a young man. He still dreams about that goat...
As for stupidity, I had finished most of the high school chemistry text in 4th grade. So when I got to high school, my best friend (similar nerd type) and I would take turns distracting the chemistry teacher so the other one could boost chemistry supplies from the closet. He was the kid of a single parent (his mom had died a few years before), so we were mostly unsupervised after school (he was also the local dealer).
So, we were smart kids, unsupervised, smoking large amounts of weed, and making explosives. Nice combination, eh?
He went on to get a chemical engineering degree and get a job (wait for it....) in the explosives industry. He's now an independent consultant with a couple of patents for detonators, and consults with Homeland Security.
Our personal best was the 5 foot wide crater we left in the front lawn of the high school one Halloween.
Amazingly, we still have all fingers and hands. But we both have some hearing loss (but that might be due to all the Tull and Zeppelin we listened to).

The times I shoulda been dead but walked away, including those times when other people didn't walk away? Over a hundred. All together, I have over three hundred stitches, plus several - now healed - broken bones from various incidents. I've done everything from fast cars to moron-cycles to climbing cliffs to jumping out of perfectly good airplanes (too boring for me, I only did it a few times.) to martial arts...(some of those guys are sociopaths. Beat 'em inna ring and you'll have to do it over again later, for real, inna street. ...and if you beat 'em there, you have to beat all of their buddies, later.)
Scars everywhere, torn ligaments and torn and worn cartilidge in almost every joint in my body...and lots of memories.
If I had the chance, I'd probably do most of it again. Well, jumping outta airplanes was kinda boring. The first step is interesting - the first couple times, that's a real rush - after ya get past that first step, booo-oooring.
(The view from the top of Mount Whitney is spectacular. The air is kinda thin, though...five minutes to look around, catch your breath, take a few pics and get the hell down.)
These days, I indulge my other passion. Academic research. I once tested the limits of my body and my physical courage.
I now test the limits of my mind...which is often a much more dangerous and frightening prospect than anything else I've ever done.

I was once trapped on a moving train. It was going way too fast to jump off and I really had no idea where it was going or how long it would take to get there.
So, I jumped from the boxcar of this fast-moving train onto another slower-moving train as it was passing it in a trainyard. I jumped off that second train onto the ground. (The second train was moving slow enough to attempt this).
Should have had both legs severed at the knees. Alas ... I lived to tell the tale.

what was the most dangerous/stupid thing you ever did that could/should have killed you, but you managed to walk away from.
Rolled a Renault LeCar at 65mph after getting bumped off of the freeway. All witnessed by an off-duty sheriffs deputy. The car flipped once, popping the hatchback open and ripping the cloth sunroof off. The hinges on the hatch broke, leaving the lid attached with only the wiring leading to it. The car flipped again, crushing the windshield frame and causing my head to pop out like a whack-a-mole. Car went over one more time, swinging the hatch across my head. That bent the sheetmetal over double. I certainly didn't walk away, though I only spent one night in the hospital with cuts and bruises, and had about 2 weeks of fairly intense pain. The paramedics told me later that they saw so much blood, they thought I was dead. I went and looked at the car the next day- there was a large chunk of scalp and hair where that decklid hit me. 1) Seatbelts work. 2) All things considered, the car held up surprisingly well.

Easy.
Chased a train leaving Mountain view (back in the days of the Harriman cars)--grabbed a hand rail, was yanked off my feet, lost my grip on the rail, tore me and clothes all up.
Why I wasn't thrown under the train (was not the last car) can only be explained if you attend church regularly.

Sat on top of a truck with several Indian men while hitch hiking from Darjeeling to Nepal. The truck was going at speeds that were dangerous for the curves and there were no barricades or fences to stop the truck if it plunged over the cliff. Did I mention I was 19 and a girl. I walked out on a sand bar spear fishing and netting crabs at night on the Fla coast. After a time I looked up and realized I couldn't see shore in any direction and was pretty sure a shark had just given a big tug on my game bag tied to a 30 ft tether.
Then there was the time I stayed on site to guard the communications gear on an Island as a hurricane was to pass by. Only the hurricane didn't pass by, it turned and ran over the island. The original plan was to fly us out before the storm got close, or failing that to take the 5 ton truck across the one bridge that could support it. But when the storm turned it created such a tidal change in the bayou that it washed debris all up against the bridge creating a dam,and then the water found a way around the bridge where the rams were lower and that washed out the bridges on ramps. The bridge was still there but it was a 6 or 7 foot ledge to get on it, and fast water trying to flow into the bayou carrying all manner of flotsam. So we jumped into the 5 ton truck and pointed it at the shore on the other side of the bayou, tied a inflatable to the back of the cab, took off the canvas cover, stood on the seats, set the throttle lock and steered it with our feet. We were determined to run the truck as far into the bayou as we could and then paddle with the wind, in the inflatable, to shore on the other side of the 1/4 mile wide and growing slew. Much to our amazement, the truck never stalled even when only the top frame of the cab and air snorkel were the only things above water. It just hopped and lurched and gurgled along until it rose from the water like a monster from the lagoon with three very tired and dripping wet grim Airmen clinging to the cab. If that truck had rolled, they never would have known where to even start looking.

I was stationed in Fla and picked up a cute little gal who's car broke down while she was on her way to work. I told her I would give her a ride home after work and take a look at her car. Turned out she worked at a strip club. When we pulled in to the place she told me not to go in, but I did anyway. So a local biker gang took offense at my being there and began giving her a real bad time about it.
I decided to defend her honor.
I had no idea why they didn't just kill me and feed me to the gators, but somehow I convinced them that I wasn't worth the trouble.
She wasn't impressed and told me to take a hike and never come back. So in a way, I got away with more than my life, twice in that one night.

Broke into an abandoned mine in college (complete with ore buggies and tracks and 15 story shafts dropping out of nowhere- throw a rock- wait 10 seconds- splash-) to collect crystals to sell at the gem and mineral show in Tucson. Roof of the mine had fallen so low in places we had to push our backbacks in front of us and crawl on our bellies with only our headlamps lighting the way. Broke out slabs of x-stals with a pickax in one "room" deep in the mine, whilst a fellow mining student blew blasting caps in another room to free up fresh layers. BOOM! Can't believe I'm still here to tell the tale.............
