— DrewM Today is the real start of the Olympics for meÂ…MenÂ’s and WomenÂ’s Curling and MenÂ’s Hockey started today.
Unfortunately the MenÂ’s Curling team took a tough loss to the Germans 7-5. A great double take out by the German skip in the 9th end was the final blow to the US team that never quite got going. Despite what Dave in Texas thinks, Curling players are tough since they play double headers. The US men are back in action tonight against Norway.
The US women are just getting underway against Japan (CNBC)
As for the hockeyÂ…meh. The US beat an over manned Swiss team 3-1.
The Swiss didnÂ’t have the size, speed or scoring talent to keep up with the US. The Swiss had some great scoring opportunities and just couldnÂ’t put them away (kind of like the NY Rangers on a nightly basis).
The US leveraged their speed and size advantages but their absolutely porous defense would have been fatal against an elite team like Canada, Russia or Sweden.
Before the game I said on Twitter that I think the US is the 4th best team in the tournament (I should have added "at best") and there was nothing in that game that made me change my mind.
On the upside, tomorrow is practice day before ThursdayÂ’s game against Norway (should be an easy game) and then two days off before the big match up against Canada on Sunday.
ThereÂ’s never been much doubt that the US would get out of round robin play but whether or not they have enough to make the medal round , let alone win one, seems to me to be very much in doubt.
Bottom lineÂ…sloppy game against inferior talent but they did what they had to do to win. This isn't figure skating, there are no style points and a win is a win (and 3 points). Hopefully itÂ’s something they can build on as they head towards the first real test on Sunday.
tmi3rd's thoughts below... Well, it's a start. I'm a bit surprised there wasn't more emphasis placed on defense... there were a few face-palming breakdowns I saw defensively (and some really bad decisions in neutral ice) that must be worked out before playing Canada, but as Drew mentioned, they have what amounts to a practice against Norway on Thursday. Shouldn't be too bad.
Up front- there's a whole lot of continuity that just isn't there... hopefully, they'll get that worked on a bit in practice on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday, and in live situations on Thursday. I'm not sure what I think yet of the first line of Stastny between Kane and Parise... you have two centermen on that line (Parise and Stastny), and they're still playing like it. The second line of Kessel and Ryan as the winger for Pavelski has some better punch than I expected, and it looked like they're still juggling 3rd and 4th lines.
Defensively, they really let off the gas in the third period... it would have made a bit more sense to play Tim Gleason (Carolina) more in the 3rd, as he's used to being the #1 defenseman... Rafalski was not as good in the 3rd as I would have preferred.
Bad bounce on the Swiss goal- these things happen. The power play (being run by DrewM's own John Tortorella) is going to need some serious practice time to get itself together- it's not horribly complex, but there are still assignments being mishandled. That said, getting a marker on the power play is a good start. They should get a nice tune-up on Thursday.
Bottom line: there is some stuff to get excited about. We'll get our first look at Canada tonight (7:30 PM ET on CNBC), and we'll see what of the men's teams the brass at NBC shows.
Drew has them at 4th- I think that may be a bit generous yet. I'm not pessimistic about them, but I want to see the Czechs, Swedes, and Finns before I start handing out rankings.

I'm not one for many of the "new" sports, but I saw the snowboard cross for the first time last night and it was very cool.

Anybody watch the Men's Mogul Comp?
The Canadian who won Gold probably desereved it, but it wasn't that obvious, but the American got screwed. He won Bronze, but clearly deserved Silver, and possibly Gold if he wasn't an American.
It's B.S...I tell you...B.S.

Curling? Seriously? Hmmmm -- maybe we can get Tiddly-Winks sanctioned for the next Olympics...

4th best team?
I'd say, unfortunately, 5th at best. Canada, Russia, Finland, Sweden, then maybe the US...Czech Republic?

I watched the US vs. The Nazis curling match today...and the announcers were talking about the amazing athleticism of the competitors..
..reminded me of that scene in Kingpin where the Woody Harrelson character said "it's kind of intimidating to be in the presence of so many great athletes." ...

Neither is Quarters.
But as fans of Beerfest know, it could probably qualify as an Olympic event as much as some that already are.

All subjective judging "sports" are a fucking joke.
Can we add field dressing to the biathalon and get Sarah in the hunt for a medal? She's in pretty good shape.

I gotta admit, when I sit down to watch the Olympics, I have a hard time turning away, regardless of the event.
Usually, I'm like that, but I've turned it off two nights in a row after:
1) the announcers were just enjoying someone's death a little too much (not enjoying-enjoying, but really getting into talking about The Great Tragedy and showing the guy's family) and
2) "Send in the Clowns" in the pairs figure skating, complete with nightmare inducing clown costumes.
Posted by: Mama AJ at February 16, 2010 02:40 PM (Be4xl)
They were also talking a bit too much about how awesome the speed was during the women's luge last night... and they referred to Seth Wescott as a "master racer". I'm not sure what their deal is.

Re: USA vs Japan: women's curling
Is it me or do the Japanese babes look like they're damn near starving & couldn't actually pick up one of those stones or whatever the hell they call it?
Conversely, the USA women can mostly be described as.....corn-fed? Looks like they can heft one of the stones on each of their shoulders & toss them like a shot put......

Biathlon is the ultimate sport, if you consider "sport" to be a demonstration of a person's ability to master his or her body.
They have to ski cross-country--nice cardio exercise, that--and then slow down their heart rate and respiration in order to shoot accurately, then take back off.
Controlling one's heart and lungs, simply through one's will. My fellow morons, that is wickedly awesome.

I actually like the winter olympics.... the downhill ski jump is one of my favorites. I grew up in Brooklyn playing stick ball and whiffle ball in the street... while you could still do that without fear of being mowed down by speeding cars... so anything beyond that looks exotic and athletic.
Bi-athalon is cool but strange... I don't know how you aspire to that growing up as a kid though... in Brooklyn we call that armed robbery in the winter..... oh well, it's a nice diversion anyhow.... it was getting a little boring watching re-runs of dirty jobs and mega disasters.

The Japanese babes were hotter by Richter factors. Freaked me out with their Bonzai! Tora! Tora! Tora! look in their eyes as they curled those stones. Very nice, I like.
If you've got to lose, lose with style.
It was a great time. Grats, Japan!
Our girlz made some stoopid mistakes -- can't do that and expect to win in the Olympics.
Hope the pull it together and put a good face on it next time.

Trying to steal 2 is a really tough job so the idea is to put up guards in the front
of the house and hope the other guys miss taking them out.
If you get lucky, the next move is to slip one in behind the guard and once again
hope the other guys miss.
At this level of play,"hoping" isn't exactly a winning technique.

So let's review what we learned tonight:
1) There are two kinds of Scandis - those that can play hockey and the Norwegians.
2) 7-0 is a nice warm-up, but Team Canada may have to take off the skate guards when we face a real team like Russia, Czech or Finland.
3) Having THREE awesome NHL goalies is a good thing.
