On Another Gubernatorial Note
— Dave in Texas

Rick "Adios Mo-Fo" Perry holding strong against Kay Bailey.

I still don't get this. I mean, I live here, I should get it. But I don't.

Anyway, he's going to smack her around tonight and Bill White in November.

9/11 Truther (sorry, she is) Paulbot Deb Medina actually holding around 17% or so.

8 If KBH wanted to be gov, she should've run last round. I probably would've have voted for her then. But she stayed in DC a few years too long and now has the stink of corruption on her, deserved or not. Personally, she lost me when she voted for the 9/11 as a day of service bullshit.

She's only pulling 17% of the vote or so. Perry had the tea party folks long before Medina showed up.

13 Rick Perry also laid claim to be the Tea Party candidate so it wasn't that clear a choice between "establishment" and "tea party." Slick Ricky's plan was to paint KBH as the establishment, insider-Washington candidate with him as the conservative choice. Once positioned there, he could claim the tea party mantle and just ignore Medina - especially after she showed herself to be a Ron Paul wing nut. There are a lot of us voting for Perry not because we like him, but just because he was the only viable choice we had. Most of us would have killed for a true conservative tea party candidate.

22 KBH hasn't resigned her seat yet, right? She is establishment GOP, has deep pockets with national party backing, and believes in term limits only as applied to the governor whose seat she wants.

She really loses nothing but money at this point. She's still senator with ample time and opportunity to campaign for reelection when needed.

Perry was the best of the lot when Medina pandered (or worse) to the Truthers. Texas' diversity and relative economic strength under Perry keeps him in good standing. His grasping on to Tea Partyers' platform early last year earned him some brownie points that are helping him now. Perfect? No, but good enough under the circumstances. Hopefully, the other state institutions will keep him checked.

And what really sold me once and for all on Perry was when he and Abbot sued the EPA.   My God, I like Perry better now than I have for the 20 years he's been in State Government.

Mormonism is goofy, but they are the nicest people ever.  So if the sacrifice is some strange theology for generous and kind people who would give you the shirt off your back, I'll take it.

When they start flying planes into buildings, then I'll look at their theology again.

As to "Bush might have had something to do with 9/11".  Yeah, I know, just asking questions, no matter how irrational.  Hell, by that standard, anybody might have.  George Soros is a more likely candidate.

But what it does is absolve the muslims, which is pretty much what any good anti-Semite wants.

Just remember, every Paultard believes the same things Medina does.  Some of them are just better at keeping it to themselves.

They weren't illiterates, you heathen.   Paul, for one, spoke and wrote at least 4 languages fluently. (Latin, Greek, Aramaic, Hebrew.)

And his skil was fairly typical for any educated man in that era who had received a hellenistic influenced eduation.    The teachings of Plato peak out from behind his words several times.

44 Uhm, there is no religious test for public servants.

Secondly, despite it's beginnings, Mormonism has some quality values, namely the family. My husband was raised in the Mormon church (he's not a practicing Mormon), my in laws and extended family are all Mormons and there's not a damn thing wrong with that.

Romney's religion has nothing to do with his fitness for office. He has a long record of service to look at, so taking cheap shots at his religion is, well, un-American. (Same thing was done to JFK, btw)

I Live in Austin (barely, considered Round Rock for all intents and purposes) and I was really excited when KBH anounced for the Gov race. I have no real love for Perry, his stupid Trans TX corridor, the HPV vaccine, the fact the rainy day fund is going to be blown by next year's budget.....well.......lets just say politically and policy wise I have my doubts with him. Added bonus: I think I think he is an asshole.

But I voted for him. Happily.

KBH did nothing to close the deal. She offered me me nothing on standing up for Texas. What Texas needs is more Texas and less DC, and she had told Texas in the debate that "States can't be allowed to make their own decisions"

her words ,. look them up.

I was all set to vote for Medina after the first debate, but then she came out as a  truther- those freaks need to move or have their heads beat in with baseball bats to clean up the gene pool.

Please don't give me that "it was a set up" crap, that is a set up like a slow pitch soft ball to a major league hitter. SHE IS A FREAK.

60 I voted for Rick Perry. Gotta say, I'm not crazy about the Gardasil controversy, but he backed off when the voters went ballistic. If Obama were only that smart! As far as I've seen KBH has not given me a cogent reason for wanting to be Texas governor, unless she just believes it's her turn. She seems so tired. And her ads about Rick Perry "wasting" money on rest stops blah blah - well, that clinched it for me! I've always judged a state by their rest stops, and I use the new ones along I-10 on a regular basis. As a woman traveling alone, I like a rest area where I feel safe, and these new ones are terrific. WiFi is available, so I can check in with the family, make reservations for hotels etc, or just chill for a bit and check email. Another thing I've noticed, is that in response to the horrible traffic situation before Hurricane Rita, when traffic clogged the freeways for 24-36 hours, we now have hurricane contraflow lanes and extra evacuation lanes along I-10 and I-45, and I doubt we'll have a repeat of people trying to get out of Houston to safety, only to have a 40-mile trip take 12 hours. IMHO that is Perry responding to a very serious need, with serious and fast changes to prevent another disaster. That is what government is supposed to do - provide infrastructure, and keep people safe. Re Debra Medina - I had a chance to talk to her at the tea party where Lord Monckton spoke, but when she walked up and gave me her literature, I wanted to hear m'Lord, so I didn't quiz her on her views. She says she's a small business owner. I may be wrong, but her description of her business on Glenn Beck didn't convince me that she's meeting a payroll. A state as big and important as Texas needs an actual executive, and though I'm sure she has more business experience than Barack Obama, I don't know if she has enough to choose staff of sufficient caliber to run the state. I was driving home from San Antonio and though I do not normally listen to Glenn Beck on the radio, I caught him out there and what do you know, it was the Medina interview. It was awful. It was not an ambush. If she does not hold out the possibility that the government was involved with 9/11, she had ample opportunity to debunk that. She lost in my view, at that time. Beck was leaning toward her candidacy, but she lost him because she wouldn't answer that question with a HELL NO! SHe lost me because of that. Another two items in favor of Perry. 51% of the new jobs in the United States are being made in Texas. That's a very great accomplishment. My husband and I were in San Francisco in October, and during dinner with friends, one mentioned that Medtronics was in San Francisco. Interestingly, it is moving to Texas, because Rick Perry went to California and solicited them to move here. This is a very active governor, who knows how to make things happen. Finally, Rick Perry is an Eagle Scout. I'm the mother of an Eagle, a special needs Eagle, to boot. Although this is not a guarantee of moral behavior and high character throughout life, it is a much stronger indicator of that potential than finding a deeply rooted belief system in an adult who grew up as a mall rat. Most of the men who walked on the moon were Eagle Scouts. I rest my case.

Math Mom, you've got it exactly right.

My lovely Iris and I were on the road from San Antonio back home to Galveston today.  (a bit chilly out, but gorgeous Texas day from inside the cozy car)

Perry has been far more good than bad for Texas, and all in all, for basic conservatism.  Not perfect, but better than worse.

Plus, he's hella strong on 2nd Amendment issues, even spending considerable time at his local Austin shooting ranges.  He's not just a dillitante at the range, either.  He's known to be a good shot, knowledgeable on 2A issues and supportive in the extreme.

I can gauge a lot of a polititian by his or her 2nd Amemdment stances.  If they trust us with full, free and unfettered access to arms, and the carriage thereof, then it's more likely they're on our side of freedom, too.

65 kbh ain't bad.  hell, Dick Cheney likes her.  Texas is damn lucky.  Their best two choices are both competent and relatively ethical professional leaders.  How many states can say that?  Bash Rick Perry if you want, but he's got a bona fide success story on his hands.  And he's stuck it to Obama and the big spenders in DC.  He's a very good governor and Texas is lucky to have that when you look at all the idiotic states that put up with shit choices.

Of course, you get the government you deserve, voters.  Texas voters deserve low taxes, low unemployment, and a government with a surplus, apparently.  Who points out the 10th amendment and changes course when he pisses the people off.

Just got in from our precinct convention ( in Ellis County here in TX. Joe Barton is our house rep). The lines were long at the polls and (R) outnumbered (D) at minimum 10-1...

I and my family voted Perry as KBH has been on our shit-list for some time. During the course of the last few years, EVERY attempt to contact KBH has been pointless. Never once has she responded personally to any correspondence. I (and many people here) can and do speak with Joe Barton, John Cornyn and practically any other credible (R) rep... With KBH, you always get a canned "form" letter that doesn't even address the issue. And that is a prevailing theme relayed by numerous people at every meeting I have attended who has tried to contact KBH. She is a master of tap-dancing the subject. She had the endorsements of heavies like Dick Cheney and celebs Roger Staubach and Nolan Ryan. But she is out-of-touch.

KBH's TV ads were made up of newspaper headlines that slammed Perry. Sources like the Dallas Morning News, Houston Chronicle, Washington Post, etc...in other words; KBH figuring the dumb-assed (R) voters would take some rag's op-ed headline as a reason to vote for her...She is clueless.

Anyway. The way I see it-It's been a good night for TX. At least for me; Born, raised and always a Texan...

@74.

I am sure it was a bunch to not very many. The working people and business owners are involved.

Ya, know...the best part will be when that ass-wipe, scumbag Chet Edwards is gone come November.

The state-wide totals of (R) vs (D) are staggering...

My son waited 35 min to vote at 1:30 this afternoon.  He said that the entire time, not one Dem. voted.

76 60, I wasn't picking on Romney. I was saying the other dude was saying Trutherism is no nuttier than the Mormon religion. I don't like Romney, but I don't give a rat's ass about his religious beliefs.

77 I hope Kay Barely Republican honors her statement that she will resign "soon".  Michael Williams would be a great upgrade.

Paul didn't record Christ's life and death, nor did Matthew, Mark, Luke, or John.

Or for that matter Thaddeus, Simon Peter, Anderw, James, Thomas, or any of the rest of the remaining eleven.  The Gospels were not written by the disciples, but by their followers.  That is the reason for the undeniable historical inaccuracies and holes in the narrative.  The point is, they were written down because the discoples' followers witnessed their martyrdom and miracles.  Now whether the miracles happened or not, the martyrdom sure as hell did, and the second generation (or third) recorded the stories passed to them orally by the eleven disciples.  And believed enough in what they had witnessed to similarly go to their deaths.  Faith is far different from self-delusion, though you might not recognize the difference.

It's like arguing with Hitchens . . . Gee, you don't believe in the same God I don't believe in.

"I was in TX this past weekend.  Heard a KBH radio ad with an ominous boogey-man voiceover slamming Perry for living in a house that was "costing the taxpayers $2000 a month."

I think I actually laughed out.  You can barely get a run-down one bedroom here in NYC for that price."

$10,000 a month.  And I actually felt this a bit unfair since the only reason for this is cause some jackass burned down the damn governor's mansion.  Sure, $10,000 a month is expensive, but state business isn't conducted out of a damn trailer.

81  I've not been a KBH fan since she and her husband (her campaign manager turned away from me in the middle of a sentence I was speaking during a campaign event. Seeing as how I was then a Republican Precinct Chairman one would think that they'd have had better sense. Good manners with one's constituents is an important part of politics.

Having said that, KBH ran the worst campaign I've seen since Mondale v Reagan.  She could have added at least another ten percent to her totals had she backed up Bunning. Instead she acted like all the other gutless Washington Republicans.

 Williams for Senate!

I don't understand her challenge I meant.

Well, if I wanted to be conspiratorial (though not quite at a truthiness level of conspiracy), KBH might have run as a favor to Perry so that all the oxygen would be sucked out of the primaries by two large campaign chests, thus preventing effective challenges to Perry.  Kinda like McCain/Obama.  Hutchison's job was to lose gracefully and hand victory to Perry.

I don't really believe that.  Just asking questions, you know?  Personally, I think the grays got to her, and she was running as a Manchurian candidate for them.  Thank goodness the grays don't understand our culture well enough to run an effective campaign, yet.  Yet.

I agree with others, Bailey's add about the $10,000 mansion did it for me, that is almost as stupid as truther comments by Medina.

Dick, #70,

Fuck you. I heard what she said. She's an idiot.

She's also a coward for trying to walk it back. So she's a gutless idiot too.

Piss off.

Nope. Love Coombs but it's Michael Williams we need in the Senate.

Probably not gonna happen, but I would love for Gregg Abbott (our fantastic Attorney General) to run for President.

My guess for KBH running for Governor is total hubris.  I think she wanted an Executive position, and she thought it was her time.  Hell, the national and state GOP probably told her it was her time, and she just believed it.  She's nothing if not establishment.  So it doesn't matter want the voters say, she just wouldn't believe until the ballots were counted.

Otherwise, I never truly understood why KBH came back.  She lost me as a Senator a long time ago.  Perry had lost me as Governor too, but as others have pointed out, he's become somewhat a changed man in the last 2 years.  KBH: no change.  I'm not Hope and Change guy, but when you had a Governor more interested in Mexico than Texas, we needed change.  Again, KBH: no change.

Medina could have been change.  I wanted to vote for her.  I really did.  I even refused to buy the talking points after Beck's interview.  But like others, I finally heard the full exchange on the radio.  She was set up like I used to set up my daughters in T-Ball.  She didn't even need to slam it home with a "Hell No".  She just needed to say, "I'm not a Truther".  She could have then pushed her Ron-bot: "We should always question government".  Yet none of that.  Not even after Beck put the ball back on the T and gave her a second chance.  Not a few days later when local newsmedia put a mic in front of her and asked the question again.  Finally, as another pointed out, her claim of executive capability is questionable at best.  Now is not the time to learn on the job.  The only reason to vote for Median is to send a message to KBH, and Perry.  So...

Big note to Perry:  YOU WILL LOOK LIKE BUSH III IF YOU RUN FOR PRESIDENT IN 2012.  Some may miss him now, but deep down, we all know the US could have done better than W.  Just because W is better than Gore, Kerry, Obama, or McCain isn't any significant accomplishment.  Stick with Governor and keep using that stump to push State's rights while leading Texas to greatness.

89 I watched part of Perrys "victory" speech with the sound down.

He reminded me a whole lot of Fidel Castro, or maybe Chavez.

I wonder if Perry will be branded a "quitter" like Palin when he decided to run for Prez in 2012?

91 In TX 14, Ron Paul with 81% against THREE challengers who claimed that he wasn't "real Tea Party". Apparently, the voters in his district thought otherwise. Maybe some Morons should listen to them.

the 3 challengers had hardly any campaign funding, and still got 20% of vote.

To beat a challenger you need plenty of funding to overcome name recognition

93 JQ @95 - Some morons have, and he comes up wanting. I was talking to a friend yesterday, and he asked what I thought of Ron Paul. I replied that 2/3 of what he says makes perfect sense, and the other third is raving batshit craziness. Batshit crazy is no way to go through life, wholly or in part.

Posted by: Patton at March 03, 2010 01:50 PM (bQoya)
