One of These Things Is Not Like The Other
— Dave in Texas

Swiping the Sesame Street theme, take a look at the four pics in the header of this (head's up) NYT story.

If you don't feel like clickin, I'll describe them,

FDR signing the G.I. Bill
LBJ signing the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (gee I wonder why they picked this?)
Ronald Reagan Showing Why We Must Lower Taxes
Barack Obama signing the Health Care Reform Act

...

These are the examples offered under the lede "A Progressive Agenda to Remake Washington".

Of course Reagan isn't praised in this steaming pile of journalistic analysis, he's blamed for cutting taxes for the rich, cutting social programs and growing the (then anemic) military. But that is just a sidebar in the story, the real point being offered is this:

If there is a theme to all this, it has been to try to lift economic growth while also reducing income inequality. Growth in the decade that just ended was the slowest in the post-World War II era, while inequality has been rising for most of the last 35 years.

Allow me to suggest that part (a) is nonsense, part (b) is precisely the point, only these ninnies do not understand the ramifications of killing the goose.

There's another subtle swipe intended to depress the conservative wave that is building toward November, a shot at Scott Brown's vote on the financial regulation POS.

Still, the turnabout since Jan. 20 — the first anniversary of Mr. Obama’s inauguration and the day after Scott Brown, a Republican, won a Senate seat in liberal Massachusetts — has been remarkable. Then, commentators pronounced the Obama presidency nearly dead. Today, he looks more like a liberal answer to Ronald Reagan.

It's a pretty nice little jujitsu move, deflecting the loss of Kennedy's seat to a Republican with some RINO red meat, I'll give them that. And for those of us who want so much to put a stop to Obama's agenda, kinda frustrating. Scott Brown is not Ronald Reagan, but neither is he Ted Kennedy. The sisters and Scott will piss us off a few times, but hey, Arlen won't anymore.

I see that as a net gain, not a net loss. I'm willing to take "the needle's amoving the other way" and accept that "there's aways to go" (we Texans love to mutilate language).

I'm prepared to take the long look. The landscape has changed. Granted, largely because a completely Democrat controlled Congress and White House have shoved their agenda down the throats of America. But a majority of Americans surely are rejecting their crap.

5 Dave,
I made the mistake of reading that article and had some of the exact same take-aways.  I nearly threw up in my mouth when I read the part that fluffed B to the O for actually getting "stuff" done considering the grid-lock in Congress.  Hello...he has fng majorities in both chambers????

Scotty puked on his shoes with that vote...his inability to see what that pos should have been flushed is troublesome.  However, every day we have without Ted in the Senate is a better day than the alternative.

Well, we won't have Scott Brown to kick around too much longer; he's gone after 2012.

Why? Because he's fucking stupid. Something happens to Republicans when they get into the Senate in D.C. This is who he's listening to these days:

"It’s the kind of vote that he has to take in order to maintain a position of independence,’’ said Dan Payne, a veteran Democratic political consultant. “His reelection will be measured not by how loyal he is to the Republican Party but by how independent he is from the Republican Party.’’

14 Mr. Obama has been trying to reverse the Reagan thrust in some important ways. Although the Reagan administration did not shrink the size of the federal government, it changed the ways that Washington collected and spent its money, by reducing taxes on the affluent, cutting some social programs and increasing military spending.

In NYT speak, "the affluent" must mean everyone.  And what "social programs" were cut?

It seems a bunch of muslims are whining about bias and being mistreated by, well, everyone else here in the United States of America.

So Obama is meeting with them to figure ways to 'raise awareness' and 'educate' people about Islam.Meanwhile...none of the myriad moderate muslims we keep hearing about have condemned the terror attacks or even helped in rooting out the extremists in their stupid fucking religion.

Liberals view wealth as a fixed entity; pieces of pie to be distributed.  Some people get a bigger piece, they see it as "inequality".

They don't seem to get the notion that wealth is created and lost every minute of every day.  Take the wealth of the top 10% and burn it in a big bonfire, and there'll be less "inequality", but that really doesn't do much to help those at the bottom.

They'd rather have us all be equally poor than tolerate the fact that some people- usually those that create wealth- will be wealthier than someone working at Wal-Mart.

They'll get indignant and act offended if you call them Socialists... right before they follow up with asking "...besides, what's so bad about Socialism?"

32 26 Permit me to quote Ann Coulter at length here...

Boehner is like the guy who just got raped in prison and doesn't know what happened to him. Hey -- what was that? Should I have thanked the guy?

As Pat Caddell says, Democrats are whores, but they expect to be paid; Republicans' names are scrawled on the bathroom wall: "For a good time, call the GOP!"

As depressing as it is to watch the Republican Party dive headlong off a cliff, at least we have Dick Blumenthal.

Connecticut's attorney general, pompous, freakishly ambitious, self-righteous, hold-a-press-conference-every-day Blumenthal, was a shoo-in to take Chris Dodd's Senate seat this fall.

After all, he was a Medal of Honor, Distinguished Service Cross, Silver Star and Purple Heart winner from his days as a four-star general in Vietnam. (And captain of the Harvard swim team to boot!)

But now we find out from a front-page article in The New York Times that, despite Blumenthal's repeated references to serving "in Vietnam" -- he was never in Vietnam. He got five draft deferments and then joined an elite unit of the Marine Reserves to avoid going to war, serving in their heroic "Toys for Tots" brigade.

He also wasn't on the Harvard swim team. (Oddly enough, though, the story Blumenthal likes to tell about owning a necklace of human ears? That one's actually true.)

Blumenthal may as well have shown up for a press conference in a dress. Suddenly, Connecticut is in play!

Naturally, therefore, Republicans are planning on running a World Wrestling Entertainment "impresario" against Blumenthal. Yes, in Connecticut ... a state that is among the wealthiest and most highly educated in the nation ... a state that isn't Minnesota. The average Nutmegger doesn't even know what a turnbuckle is, and that includes me.

Republicans could run Rob Simmons, a Connecticut legislator with a distinguished record of service in the House of Representatives, the CIA, and as a Yale political science professor -- who actually did serve in Vietnam, winning two Bronze Stars and retiring as a colonel.

But defeat is so close! Republicans can almost taste the bitterness of yet another crushing loss!

43 There's another subtle swipe intended to depress the conservative wave that is building toward November, a shot at Scott Brown's vote on the financial regulation POS.

According to BB's Big Gov article that vote for the financial bill was enabled by David Vitter R-LA. He pushed through and amendment that made it more palatable.

That is one of the things that aggravates me. R's take a bill that has NOTHING in it worth a shit, and everything bad, put in a fig leaf amendment and the RINOs jump on.

This bill was never intended to be anything other than more reward for Dem cronies and a trap for Republicans.

As for the "rich getting richer" meme on the Bush tax cuts, Bush never replied and fought back on that lie. It has been debunked over and over again on the conservative blogs with in-depth analysis, but to date, there has never been a concerted effort by Republicans to debunk it as the lie it is.

Is it no wonder that the Republicans always lose the media war?

Ah, the inequality line, usually phrased in terms of "disparity" or some "gap" or another.

Which I never understood. I have a gift (if you can call it that) of understanding the other guy's point of view and seeing the rationale behind his arguments. But when someone takes that tone and shakes his head and points out that the United States has one of the highest proportionate differences between the richest people and the poorest people, I respond with, "So? What difference does that make? What does that have to do with anything?"

That's when I get that look -- the You just don't get it look with the You're not one of us glare mixed in. And that's usually about the time I'm reminded that the discussion has nothing to do with economics; it's just Lenin's grand plan playing out at the interpeersonal level.

Or you are a woman who strays, and can be justifiably killed by your male relatives.

Or you try and convert from Islam to Christianity or Judaism, or Buddhism.

Yeah, Islam is peaceful.

One probably unspoken benefit of this whole so-called War on Terror (of course that's over now), is that a lot more Westerners actually know something about Islam now, and are not deceived so much by the "Islam is the religion of peace"  BS.  I know Bush pushed this for one reason, hoping for democratic change within the Arabic/Muslim countries, but it is ultimately a falsehood that we cannot forever tolerate.

72 #71  The gap between rich and poor has been getting narrower for a hundred years.

Clarence Thomas (or was it Walter Williams?) once described the rich/poor "gap" from this perspective.  Imagine two guys, one who's annual income is 100k and one who's annual income is 10k.  What if their incomes were then doubled, to 200k and 20k respectively?  Has the rich/poor gap been widened?  Yes, but have both men's lives been improved?  YES.

Libs either don't intuitively get this or don't want to get it.

Canada is the largest exporter of oil to the United States.  About 20% more than Saudi Arabia, the next one on the list.

If one truly believes all races are equally capable of excellence, doesn't it follow that if you pursue recruiting excellent people diversity will necessarily follow?

"Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Gary Roughead said his top long-term priority is increasing diversity in the officer corps."

That sort of statement overlooks the fact that grads have to have a talent for higher math and engineering studies.

Oh, and minorities that do have such talent usually apply that talent in the private sector instead of the armed services.  That's reality.  Gary Roughead is in for some disappointment.

83 The Republican party though, is looking at RINOs with "The trend is your friend" attitude when it comes to tendering candidates for office. Seems that there are a different species pandering to conservatives, moving further left. If we wind up with another Bush-type, elitists have won, we lose, and take default third world status position. Game-over. No return to US Const. will make up for the socialist movement by all elitists. Socialism is indoctrinated into all elites, its all about control and power over the people, been that way since the French Revolution, its humanist nature.

85 57...I like LK and usually agree with his positions, but he wrote something I read this week that made me throw up in my mouth a little.  Regarding the crisis in Europe, he pushed an "answer" that does include government intervention.  His point was that extraordinary circumstance, blah, blah, blah.  He even prefaced his solution by stating his free-market cred.

So, LK, if government intrusion is the answer in tough time, why wouldn't it work even better in not so tough times?  Are you saying free-market principles only work when things are good?

I just don't get it, how this stuff escapes really smart people.

Kudlow is deeply invested in his V shaped recovery he has been pushing for the last couple of months and he sees it slippping away so he is pulling out the stops to keep it going. He has already said the economy is going to suck next year but be great this year so he is hoping the government dump a bunch of sugar into the economy to get it through December.

Ah, the inequality line, usually phrased in terms of "disparity" or some "gap" or another.

Which I never understood. I have a gift (if you can call it that) of understanding the other guy's point of view and seeing the rationale behind his arguments.

From their point of view, wealth is a fixed commodity.  Therefore, one can only become wealthy by denying wealth to others.  If only "the rich" didn't have such a big piece of the pie, there'd be more to go around.

It's a completely ignorant viewpoint, but it's how they think.  They see the rich as only having gotten there through an unfair advantage and by somehow "stealing" from the less well off who would have more if not for "exploitation" by the wealthy.

There's a reason that lefties have always had a soft spot in their hearts for Marxist / Socialist / Communist "revolutionaries" around the world.

Posted by: Hollowpoint at May 22, 2010 08:04 AM (plsiE)

91 89...pretty self-serving, eh?  Reminds me of the corporate executives who are all free-marketey, until they can use government intrusion to insulate their own positions/companies from competition.  If they truly believed in free-market, they would relish everyone having the same opportunities.

To me, free-market principles are like eating healthy and government intrusion is junk food.  Sure, you can get away with junk food now and then.  In fact, some junk food gives a great temporary feeling and can be "worth it".  But, in no way is a junk food diet EVER superior to a healthy diet.  Especially when one is already deathly ill.

We've lived on a sugar-high so long that we're addicts.

It's not just wealth.  The main problem - the genesis - of the left's problems with all of their theories is that they are STATICISTS.  They view the world as static and unchanging.  This is why they so naturally move to centralized control, because it is simple and efficient to centralize control for a static system.  When all needs to do is assign the number of paper clips going to desk #25432 for the month, there's no reason nor need to have that decentralized.

Growth and dynamics kill all implementations of leftists theories ... which is why leftist control structures fight against dynamics and growth and move to stagnate everything they touch.  Of course, in the real world, stagnation is death.

There is more crony capitalism going on now than ever has before I would guess. GE the company Kudlow works for and the company that has 3 Obama boosting TV networks took $148 Billion in TARP funds and got a special exclusion that none of their execs would be subject to salary or bonus controls. This year GE made $10 Billion but paid $0 income tax because they had a loss in the US and were able to defer their offshore earnings.

Even when the crony corps. pay taxes they do so willingly and happily because the government has already either blocked anyone competing with them or loaded them with government cheese. So while they may pay alot of taxes they double their profits anyway. That's the danger of letting 47% of the people off the hook on income taxes, the government depends on high earners and corporations to fund them so those individuals get the cheese.

Posted by: robtr at May 22, 2010 08:13 AM (fwSHf)

94 "If there is a theme to all this, it has been to try to lift economic growth while also reducing income inequality."

Every time I hear this, it infuriates me. You cannot have both at the same time!  And the reason that we have "poor" people over the last 3 years is because the government pays them to be poor!

There is no downside to "income inequality", at least, none that anyone can point to with any accuracy. So fucking what if incomes aren't equal? Why is that a relevant argument? Incomes have always been and will always be unequal. That's life.

I don't understand this focus on income disparity, to the exclusion of wealth creation. Progressives want to paint capitalism as anti-social for not insuring that everyone makes the same amount of money? How insane is that?

Ironic how Michelle was making $500,000 a year doing nothing at that hospital job, which didn't exist before they gave it to her and no longer exists now that she is First Lady, when other people who were doing nothing had a much lower income.

Seems to me there is some inequality in that.

Posted by: Speller at May 22, 2010 08:29 AM (o0R2E)

100 100...because wealthy need government less.  And there is only one way to get a society where all income in equal.  And that way insures the power of the political class has infinite shelf life.

The Hammer, #83: If one truly believes all races are equally capable of excellence, doesn't it follow that if you pursue recruiting excellent people diversity will necessarily follow?

Yes, of course. But then they would get to pick themselves by being excellent -- kind of like how the best products, services and ideas make themselves successful in a free marketplace.

But we don't want them to pick themselves. We don't want to surrender our influence to natural forces, even if the natural way finding excellence is better than our way. We want to do the choosing. We want to be able to steer things according to our ideals, needs and wants.

That's why diversity tops our agenda.

(end, chanelling the progressive mindset)
