Open Thread -- Global Warming Edition
— Purple Avenger

The PRC news agency Xinhua has a nice one-stop shopping list of global warming news links here.

With the ONT approach 1000 comments, and load times slowing accordingly, all things Dolph/Coakley/Brown/AGW and other random loose shit can be directed here now to improve response times.

BTW, the Xinhua roundup definitely rates better than a B+

Byron York on the latest Dem spin on the Coakley fiasco:

The same sort of thinking is emerging in Massachusetts. "This is a Creigh Deeds situation," the Democrat says. "I don't think it says that the Obama agenda is a problem. I think it says, 1) that she's a terrible candidate, 2) that she ran a terrible campaign, 3) that the climate is difficult but she should have been able to overcome it, and 4) that Democrats beware -- you better run good campaigns, or you're going to lose."

Report from Washington Examiner via Drudge link

This will be the spin on Tuesday when the elction shows how bad the Dems are doing.

7 All those heavy snow, freezing to death articles? Absolute proof the science is settled and Coakley needs to help pass health care. In related news, the peyote this year seems much stronger; the Aztecs are buzzing about Ted Kennedy's gristle-encrusted head, and how well it handles in the soccer matches.

The question is "what will the Repubs do if the Dems elect to implement the "Nuclear Option"?

Will they fold like a cheap suit or will they fight?

This is just fucking incredible.

The IPCC report issued in 2007- that was claimed to be based on the most recent and detailed, and painstaking, peer-reviewed  research -saying the Himalyan glaciers would be gone by 2035 was based on nothing more than some Indian scientist who was just speculating...and actually did not do any research on it

...apparently it was just too delicious for the sciencytists to check

17 I don't think Coakley's problem is that she's a "terrible" candidate (although obviously a terrible human being).  He problem is that she's a rather ordinary democrat candidate trying to run during extraordinary times.

Had this same election been held in 2006 or 2008, she'd have walked all over Brown, even with her inept campaign.

What will they be able to do? They can throw a big fuss about it, but the media will all be mostly silent and won't give 'em any face time. If I were them and Reid pulled this crap on the American people, I would walk out of the Senate and protest outside on the streets with the people.

Thats only if one or both of the Maine sisters doesn't decide to flip which I'm not exactly convinced of if Brown gets elected.

IPCC "report" that Himalyan glaciers to melt by 2035 is a lie. (Yeah, it surprised me, too.)

The lead role in that process was played by Graham Cogley, a geographer from Trent University in Ontario, Canada, who had long been unhappy with the IPCC's finding.

He traced the IPCC claim back to the New Scientist and then contacted Pearce. Pearce then re-interviewed Hasnain, who confirmed that his 1999 comments had been "speculative", and published the update in the New Scientist.

Cogley said: "The reality, that the glaciers are wasting away, is bad enough. But they are not wasting away at the rate suggested by this speculative remark and the IPCC report. The problem is that nobody who studied this material bothered chasing the trail back to the original point when the claim first arose. It is ultimately a trail that leads back to a magazine article and that is not the sort of thing you want to end up in an IPCC report.”

It will be our job to work early to caucus and elect conservatives in the primaries instead of liberals with an R after their name. --sorry about test but I have floating IP# internet service and sometimes get a banned notice here.

They will never use the nuclear option.  It would only help conservatives, especially when the Senate is more evenly divided.  In other words, the Dems could have a slight majority and still lose major votes because of conservative Dems choosing to vote with the minority Repubs.  They are having a hard enough time with 60!

A year into his presidency, President Obama faces a polarized nation and souring public assessments of his efforts to change Washington, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.

Nearly half of all Americans say Obama is not delivering on his major campaign promises, and a narrow majority have just some or no confidence that he will make the right decisions for the country's future.

More than a third see the president as falling short of their expectations, about double the proportion saying so at the 100-day mark of Obama's presidency in April. At the time, 63 percent said the president had accomplished a "great deal" or a "good amount." Now, the portion saying so has dropped to 47 percent.

Republicans are particularly critical of Obama's efforts in general and on big domestic and foreign issues. Just 20 percent of Republicans approve of his overall job performance, compared with 87 percent of Democrats. That partisangap is bigger than any that Presidents Bill Clinton George H.W. Bush or Ronald Reagan ever faced among the general public. It's about on par with divergent ratings of George W. Bush across his second term

I did a little more research on the convention thing. This may be a case of sour grapes by one of the sponsors who pulled out. There is a statement over at Hot Air in which they said this convention was not intended to be a media event and that it was a working meetting for nationwide tea party members.

They said the convention wassold out/completely booked and they just did not have accomadations for all the requestes they had from the press so they limited it to just a few press outlets, one of which was Fox. All the press outlets that were allowed were ones who have been generally favorable to the Tea Party moevement and/or conservatives.

I guess I can see if you have to limit the number that you reward your "friends" first but this will still get distorted by the media who was excluded.

The secret to the left's success is to move slowly and stealthily. Most people don't care enough to really dig into politics, so the left can slowly take their income and freedoms without the average voter noticing.

The leftists took the 08 election as a sign that the populace wanted to ramp up he speed of this loss though, even though the only *issues* Obama actually campaigned on were tax cuts and deficit reduction.

It is hard to ignore Obama giving trillions away to his friends though, and government healthcare? Yeah, that's pretty obvious too.

So the left has reminded the mushy middle why they don't like about the left. Not a good idea...

93 Will someone get that amozonian idiot off my tv every five minutes telling me about Haiti.

I think this couple sits up at night thinking of excuses to stand in front of a camera. I dont remember Mrs. Bush hogging all the publicity after the Indonesian quake. and I don't remember Bush trying to sell shit on late night TV either (Barry has that awful commercial about building dikes or something) Am I wrong, or is this too much. F-ing oprah, f-ing vegetables, f-ing Haiti.

Maybe she will get more cash from the public than Bush/Clinton, but I really f-ing resent the first lady asking the public to send money. Makes my heart hard. F them. If Bush/Clinton wants to ask, like Clinton/Bush did a couple years ago then fine, but for a sitting first lady to beg it is unseemly and insincere.

NPR's Political Editor got himself interviewed on air this morning, and holy shit it was like listening to Harry Reid.  The idiot talked on and on about all the problems facing the Dems, including Obama's alienation of the left, the litany of all the things inherited from the evil GWB, and the "obstruction of the Republicans", "Like Ben Nelson and Joe Lieberman" - I fucking kid you not!!

He moaned and groaned (it is his party obviously) about all these things... everything but the truth - That Americans are angry at how the Dems in the White House and Congress have tried to shove a leftist agenda down our throats, as if it was their right to govern by fiat, and calling anyone who disagrees with them racists and Nazis!

All the high-paid staff and Senior Senile News Analysts and Political Editors combined either will not ,or can not, see the truth staring them in the face about what is going on in the country, and they call themselves a news service!!  What a farce!  This interview explains why when you are listening to NPR it sounds like you are listening to people living in another reality... because that is exactly what you are doing!

Mark Steyn on the Mass. race including...

"The educated class" turned out to be not that educated – if, by "educated," you mean knowing stuff. They were dazzled by Obama: My former National Review colleague Christopher Buckley wrote cooing paeans to his “first-class intellect” and “temperament.” I used to joke that “temperament” was for the Obammysoxers of “the educated class” what hair was to Tiger Beat reporters. But you don't really need analogies. As David Brooks noted after his first meeting with Obama, "I was looking at his pant leg and his perfectly creased pant, and I'm thinking, a) he's going to be president and b) he'll be a very good president." And once you raised your eyes above pant level it only got better: "Our national oratorical superhero," gushed New York magazine, "a honey-tongued Frankenfusion of Lincoln, Gandhi, Cicero, Jesus, and all our most cherished national acronyms (MLK, JFK, RFK, FDR)."

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama will attend church services with his wife, Michelle, and speak to the congregation about helping the people of Haiti.

Later Sunday, the president flies to Massachusetts to campaign for Democratic candidate Martha Coakley who's in a tight Senate race with Republican Scott Brown. Obama and other party leaders are concerned that Democrats could lose a key 60th vote in the Senate if Coakley doesn't win the race to succeed the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy. It takes 60 votes to stop a filibuster

Well, not so much here. You submit your plans along with a "fee" that is based on the total cost of the new construction (1 point I think with a minimum). They examine your "plans" and give you the go-ahead to build. Once built they do a short on-site inspection.

There is one "inspector" for the entire county so you can imagine what kind of inspection you get. The thing here is nothing more than a new tax gouge.

Besides that, in a true code State/county neither you notr I would have been able to do ANY wiring because neither one of us is licensed.  Here that was enforced by the utility (which I worked for). The wiring from the meter base to the panel had to be done by a licensed electrician and I could do the rest.

America needs Mass. to 'help' the other 49 states to break up this 'madness & insanity' in Washington..

As a campaign tactic, this really isn't the best use of Coakley's few remaining hours.

When the POTUS comes to town, all those with him get trapped in the bubble where it is nearly impossible to connect with everyday, undecided voters. The people who wait in the long lines to see the speeches or watch the motorcade pass are already going to vote for her, so other than some additional media coverage this gains her nothing. It will be a much needed pep rally, but it won't move the needle much since it isn't a surprise to anyone that Obama supports Coakley. Plus, the DC-based, helicopter campaign only contrasts more with the guy in the truck. The first he should do when he arrives is whack Coakley in the side of the head for losing the election.

"A lot of people don't want Barack Obama to succeed, and that's who we're fighting against. They don't want him to be a president that leads this country."- Boston's Mayor for Life

The president of the United States doesn't "lead the country." That phrase is reserved for dictators and kings. The Constitution spells out very specific and limited powers for the office of the president. If the obama Marxist succeeds, it will be end of the Republic and the beginning of the long slide into the dark ages. It will be centuries before people can recreate a Constitutional Republic on this continent.

The scumbag shouldn't be interfering in any state's election process.

When its a run parallel to a 2X4 stud, essentially you have to do that to avoid a NEC 300.4 violation.   300.4 states the cable must be 1.25" from any edge where there's nails or screws.  That only leaves you a 1" wide area you have to stay within on a standard 2X4.

I would definately bust someone on a 300.4 violation if they wandered outside that range if I was an inspector. We had a guy killed down here in FL because of that a few years ago.  A sheetrock screw penetrated the Romex and hit the black wire, energizing the whole steel framing in the house.   A worker installing a bathroom cabinet later on touched the framing and was killed on the spot.  An emergency FBC change went into effect because of that fatality.  Now, all steel framing has to be grounded.

I grok what Truman's saying.  The first person I ever met from MA is--no shit--a blind albino lesbian who counsels women to get abortions and teaches "safer sex" for a living.  Scott Brown is a freakin' miracle.  The people waiting for a Massachusetts Steve King are off their nut.

YooTube - Why Jon Stewart failed to make John Yoo squirm. By Christopher Beam at Slate.

"How did he do it? It's a question John Yoo has been getting a lot lately. How did he manage to outwit Jon Stewart? ("He slipped through my fingers," Stewart recalled after Yoo's recent appearance on The Daily Show. "It was like interviewing sand.") Easy, says Yoo. "I've spent my whole career learning to settle down unruly college students who have not done the reading.""

To flesh out the Seattle dispute, I rather think that having sex with one's "girlfriend" in the park is what brought this issue to a, er, um, head.

I agree there's a really wide range of on-site involvement from building inspectors. I had to watch my little municipality go from the old rural outlook, with an avuncular old pro who'd point out what he wanted to see and explain why, to the modern big-city revenue source system. It was pretty transparent, so to speak. The old guy had approved my roof framing plan and even complimented the draftsmanship. He retired; when the new guy came to the job for the sign-off, he did a slow, slow 360, gazing "up in the groins" with his mouth open, then said, "Okay, somebody's going to have to explain this to me."

One of my closest friends voted for Obama and it was the first time he'd ever pulled the lever for a Dem. He was never a conservative in the first place but his excuse was that he was so sick of Bush (he fell for the media bias) that Obama was the only answer.

When I pointed out that Obama wasn't running against Bush, he kind of mumbled something about the GOP and then changed the subject.

I'm pretty sure that he's suffering from voter's remorse because he has NOT brought up politics since.

Unfortunately for so many other people, their hatred for Bush seems to be the only engine that drives them. Must be a pretty shitty existence.

About Brown-Coakley:

I can't help but get the feeling that there's something else going on in the minds of Massachusetts voters.  I think their enthusiasm for Brown is partly because of suppressed resentment about Edward Kennedy.  I think that a lot of them voted for Kennedy because of some illogical sense of guilt over the death of his brothers.  Now that he's dead, of natural causes, they feel released from their "duty" to support left-wing candidates and issues.

That's why there is such a huge joyful support for Brown.  Republicans have won in Massachusetts before, but Romney and Brooke never had this kind of enthusiasm among their supporters.

In related news my wife called from the Logan airport tarmac, where she was sitting "for some reason" after flying in from Philly.  I told her to look out the window for AirForce 1.  Sure enough, Obumblefuck's 'chine rolled past and took off, no doubt flying w/o a cockpit crew  made uneccessary by the radiant energy of Sheer Genius.

280 Re #16 (Incredible disappearing glaciers... not!)

Here's a link to a small article on it in American Thinker. This paragraph of Rick Moran's nets it out:

"Got that? The IPCC Report on which the science of global warming rests - a report being used to justify ruining industrial civilization - used an old story based on a brief telephone interview with a scientist nobody ever heard of, in a general interest science magazine geared for non-scientists (The New Scientist) to push the notion that the glacier's in the Himalaya's would be gone in 25 years."

Okay, I get it now. Real science is just too fzking hard for the AGW folks. I'm almost tempted to see if I can find a link between their "research" and articles for kids in magazines like Highlights and Ranger Rick.

282 112, 257, 279 And the use of the word "lie."

This is a word I hesitate to use. Lefties sling it around so much it has lost all meaning. But it is a serious word. It should be. To be caught in a lie should be a career-ending moment. It should generate shame. Being caught lying puts all relationships in jeopardy. It weakens one's resolve, and destroys one's credibility. With such a profound effect, we should pause before using such an unequivocal term. We should search for alternative explanations, if we can find them. The seriousness of such a charge demands it of us.

For example, we can attribute much to ignorance. We can try to see where an honest disagreement over ideas comes into play. We can try to argue in good faith, and assume the person we think might be lying, is in fact convinced he is not.

At some point, this becomes an exercise in futility. At some point the excuses provided become venal, and the apologists visibly uncomfortable. At some point, we are left with no other conclusion but the bald fact that a man who we should trust is in fact lying to us. In such a case, we must be sure he knows he is lying. In such a case we must have evidence. And most importantly, we should be saddened to make such a determination, and we should do so soberly, and with no joy.

For President Obama, the time for this determination is overdue. I urge you all to be more careful with this word, so that it retains its awful power. I also urge you all to read a brilliant summary, by Victor Davis Hanson, of the reason we must sadly conclude the President is a contemptible liar.

Posted by: K~Bob at January 17, 2010 03:13 PM (9b6FB)

283 In contrast to my above post, please check out the article here, at Macleans, by Andrew Coyne, which features an amazing quote about lying and dissembling from Vaclav Havel, the former president of the Czech Republic.

I believe George W. Bush had his moments where he decided to avoid comment instead of lying. I think he also was a bit of a poor public speaker who probably said some things he regrets. I doubt he was an intentional liar to the American People.

Vaclav Havel feels he was able to avoid lying to the people after making the move from dissident to President. Further, he believes lying should be unnecessary in a public official. That's good to read.

(I have one caveat I should mention, and it is unfortunately in President Obama's favor: on matters of national security, just as in matters of law enforcement, misdirection to one's enemies is sometimes an important tool of statecraft. We must expect a Commander In Chief to be able to tactically misdirect our enemies, and that includes making false statements in public. I'm confident the average citizen understands that, and also is smart enough to detect to whom a lie is targeted. )

284   >>All Obama did was belittle Brown about his truck

Senator Brown will probably remember that...Posted by: Purple Avenger ..

PA,

Heh! Incredible day on the trail..

Scott Brown responded to ObamaÂ’s mockery with the following statement:

Mr. President, unfortunately in this economy, not everybody can buy a truck. My goal is to change that by cutting spending, lowering taxes and letting people keep more of their own money.

Maybe under ObamaÂ’s economic plan, everybody is getting a truckÂ…

Brown was surrounded by signs dubbing him, “Unsinkable Scott Brown,” and by chants of “Scott’s the man.” He shook hands and posed for pictures before he was whisked away aboard his campaign bus for his next campaign stop at Wachusett Mountain in Princeton.

I ate dinner at Barber's Crossing in Princeton before driving home.

Have a trip to Logan to pick up Mrs. SiM and Sgt. Chris arriving from Ft. Meyers.

Full report on the ONT or a 'Scott Thread"

*hint hint*

I am so boned I have to take a cold shower. If this is what it takes to stop Obumbles I WILL NOT SLEEP UNTIL WEDNESDAY!!

The energy for Scott is amaaazing.
