— Maetenloch Happy H-Day all.
Here Steve McGranahan who calls himself the World's Strongest Redneck shows how he trims his hedges using his lawnmower on a stick. Probably not recommended for those with weak arms or a need for all 10 fingers.
And lest you think Steve is a one trick pony, he's also developed his own style of martial arts. But do not confuse him with the original Redneck Ninja.

Gay Approval Now An Academic Requirement?
Well one student at Augusta State University has been threatened with expulsion unless she renounces her views on homosexuals and a professor teaching a course of Catholicism at the University of Illinois was fired for daring to criticize homosexuality. Note that in both of these cases the victims are being punished for merely expressing their views and not for any actions.
Meanwhile today a judge ruled that a graduate student in counseling at Eastern Michigan University could be expelled for refusing to see gay patients. This case is little murkier since it's unclear if she refused to counsel gay patients that were assigned to her as part of her education or if she merely stated that she wouldn't do so after graduating. If it's the latter, then this is a serious attack on freedom of thought. Schools are now imposing an ideological view as a requirement for graduation. Since almost all Christians (and Muslims) view homosexuality as a sin, this new standard amounts to a de facto (anti-)religious test to graduate.

Charlie Rangel Introduces Another Mandatory Service Bill
Well the Democrats sure do seem to love the DraftNational Service these days. And this bill would require two years of national service (either in the military or in a civilian corps) for every American, male and female, between 18 and 42 years of age. And the president gets to decide who goes into the corps and what they do. What could possibly go wrong?

6 Words That Need to Be Banned from the English Language
Well according to Dan O'Brian. They are: moist, jowls, bulbous, yolk, slurp, pulp.
The Refudiation of the Palin Haters
There was a kerfuffle last week when Sarah Palin used the word 'refudiate' on Fox and later in a tweet. Critics immediately jumped on this as just more proof that she's teh stupid since she used a word that doesn't exist. Oh the horror!! Of course readers of the ONT know that I'm very much a descriptivist when it comes to English. My view is that if you make up a word and its meaning is pretty much obvious to English speakers, well then it's an English word now MFers.
Anyways it turns out that Palin didn't make up refudiate. It was used in a paper as far back as 1925 and Sen. DeWine also used it as recently as 2006. So Palin 1, critics 0. But of course you'll never hear a hint of this in the MFM. Or any criticism of Obama's own made up word, 'wee-wee'd up'.

The Great Bacon Odyssey: Is Bacon Ice Cream Worth the Effort?
Well Matt Blum tried it and liked it. But added the caveat that he likely wouldn't try it again. My usual theory of food is that if you like A and B, you'll probably like A and B mixed together. But this may be an exception.

Remembering the Mold-O-Rama Machines
They're practically extinct these days but I have very strong memories as a kid of convincing my parents to buy a gorilla mold at a visit to the zoo. And yes the pungent chemical smell of the hot plastic is still embedded in my brain some place. There are still a few machines left and a single repairman who keeps them going.

Lost Kafka Writings Resurface, Tied Up in Court
When he died in 1924 he ordered all his unpublished writings to be burned, but how they ended up in an Israeli safe deposit box over seventy years later is practically a Kafkaesque story in itself.

I saw that in the British papers, & they said there was 'much furore' over his comments, though more because he was implying Britain is week. PM Cameron is as conservative as David Frum, IMO, & many Tories have been complaining about it.

Re: the mandatory service bill. If that bullshit becomes law (presumably there is a very very low probability, but these days who knows??), it's emmigration time. Fuck that. The US is rapidly becoming the least free nation in the Western Hemisphere. And you can bet your ass the welfare layabouts will be exempt from it, or else their service will be to look after their welfare brats for once, and/or to use their fat asses to hold down their couches.
I'm a big supporter of a military draft in time of need. But 2 years indentured servitude to the state, on top of already confiscatory taxes, goes too far.

I damaged myself politically at work today, and I'm feeling a bit anxious. My wife is upstairs watching one of those ghost reality programs again. I cannot stand to be in the same room when she watches that crap. That's generally what brings me to AOS. The programs are, for some reason I can't fathom, quite popular. They are on 2 or 3 channels now including the Sci-Fi channel. That channel has gone to crap. I am an afficianado of sci-fi but haven't seen anything worth watching on that clinker for years now. They even had big time wrestling on there. WTF does wrestling have to do with science fiction?
On another note, I have an uber geek friend. He is seriously retarded in his social skills. A few years ago he was storing some stuff in a Public Storage facility for $85 a month. I helped him bring it to my warehouse where I kept it at no charge. There have been multiple 20 mile trips using my truck and back, the last couple of which, hoping he would take a hint, I stopped to get gas. So tonight, after stopping for gas, I mentioned with a little sarcasm in my voice, "Hey Kev, I made this drive what 4 or 5 times? Do you think you could throw in $20 for gas?" He replied, "You want $20 for gas?" Me, "Yea uh!" The guy is clueless but we go back to kindergarden together. What are you going to do?

I went to lunch with my 89 year old mother last week and commented that some of her "retirement resort" employees were sure having large lunches. She said, "Honey, I think that's their dinner."
It took me a second to translate that into: They eat at a discount here and therefore make their noon meal the largest of the day (dinner).

OK, let me straighten the supper vs dinner thing for you platypus fellators:
Breakfast is breakfast.
Lunch is the mid-day meal. "Dinner" can apply if the main meal is eaten mid-day, such as a 2pm Thanksgiving Dinner.
The evening meal is supper, except in a more formal setting or going to a resturant (dinner party, going out to dinner). If a less formal family meal, it's supper.
And anyone who says different is wrong. And possibly gay.

The jury in the trial of the 57-year-old man, who has denied fondling the boy, performing oral sex on him and having the boy touch his penis, is likely to retire today.
The man is facing two charges of indecent assault and one of sexual violation by unlawful sexual connection.
Giving evidence yesterday, the man denied any of the sexual activity described by the boy took place and said text messages he sent the boy, taken out of context, had been read the wrong way.
One text, suggesting the boy could "take a picture of woody" while he was home alone, was a mistake caused by his use of predictive text to write the message.
He said "woody" was a term he and his son used to talk about Woodstock beverage. He said the boy used the term to describe an erection, but he did not use the word in that sense. The man said he used predictive text and "woody" had appeared in a text when he meant "face".
"This word had obviously come up and had not been seen by me," he said.
When asked by Judge Raoul Neave what he meant by a text "I get excited thinking about you", which came after several texts between the pair after 1am on September 29, the man said he was unable to explain.
"I have no idea. I had woken up out of a deep sleep."

That there's no reason for him to be single when Ryan Fitzpatrick is in the same town.
Ryan Fitzpatrick: Carolina boy
Age: 27Hometown: Lake Toxaway, N.C.
Political party: Democratic
Relationship status: Single
If youÂ’re looking for Ryan Fitzpatrick, heÂ’s likely one of the attractive young men playing Ultimate Frisbee on the National Mall or the water skier zooming around the North Carolina lake on which he grew up.
These are two of his favorite pastimes. He never tires of playing a pickup game of Ultimate with friends, and as for waterskiing, “I always have to get a trip in when I visit home,” he says.
FitzpatrickÂ’s career in politics began while he was painting houses and working at a bar.
He had just graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and slapped together odd jobs while, in his free time, volunteering on Rep. Heath ShulerÂ’s (D-N.C.) first congressional campaign in 2006. It was a bonding experience.
“ really early on, when everything was still informal,” Fitzpatrick says of the campaign. “It was like a family, where you make do with what you have.”
When his boss won the election, Fitzpatrick landed a job in ShulerÂ’s Washington office.
He describes himself as courteous and thoughtful and is also a music lover. He likes playing the part of the cosmopolitan, getting to know the city beyond Capitol Hill through a few of his favorite things: the arts, restaurants and karaoke. He enjoys reading, writing, tutoring his 9-year-old mentee and “learning about the problems the city faces — just like any other city,” he says.
Fitzpatrick is single and acknowledges that he doesn’t do too much to stay beautiful. A gym buddy keeps him motivated to exercise, and he “tries not to overdo it on the ice cream,” although he admits that’s easier said than done. He attributes his looks mostly to good genes, he says.
“Thanks, Mom and Dad,” Fitzpatrick says.

You're not really wrong but
Breakfast is Break fast and hence the morning meal
Lunch is Luncheon or a light midday meal
If the midday meal is the big meal of the day as it used to be when men labored in the fields--they didn't wait for their big meal at night--it is dinner.
Dinner is the big meal of the day
Supper is eaten as an evening meal if dinner was eaten at midday. If lunch was eaten at midday then the largest meal is dinner--the evening meal.
Suppers are lighter than dinners.
The phase, "A light supper" or "A simple supper" exists. "A light dinner" does not.

I'm not buying it.
When I was a yoot, I was given instruction in photography by my godfather, a WWII combat photog who came home to teach his craft at a world-famous "college of design." One of those he considered a "great" was a guy called Will Connell, who did industrial photography that was, in its own way, equal to Adams's nature work.
It was his contention that there were dozens of photographers who could do what Adams did in a technical sense. The difference was that each one "saw" the resulting image in his or her own way. The necessary skills were known, and taught to pro photographers back in the days when darkroom work was an integral part of the image-making process.
I used to know some of the tricks, from a particular way of developing B&W negatives to creative dodging and burning of select areas when making prints.
The negatives this guy claims came from Adams were obviously the work of a good photographer. We would have to see how Adams would have printed them to know if they really were his. Conversely, I'm told some Adams negatives result in pretty dull prints if the work is done by someone lacking his darkroom skills.
This is like finding a "lost trove" of any artist's work. Unlikely and, in this case, not provable.

So if you've got everyone over for Christmas Dinner, it's dinner, even if you're eating at 2 p.m. so the old folks don't have to drive in the dark. We talked about how ignorant the electorate was, he being the pessimist. He had a study hall coming up and told me to just watch. He asked each student to name one of their Senators. Again, MA in the 90s. Only one out of 20 could. And this precocious girl guessed Tim for the first name...

I'm amazed they can pay for all this. I seem to recall, that when they bought the house in Chappaqua, there was all kinds of gossip about them not being able to afford it and not being able to get a mortgage cause "they had never owed a home" and the next thing I find out is that they have a house on the property and they are renting it to the government for their SS detail. People like this always find the angle, always manage to get away with everything. People like us always are honest and the honest ones always lose and they laugh at us.

The only reason he rakes in those fees is because he can get whatever company or foriegn goverment that hires him access to lawmakers who will give them money. Our money.

I have a problem with that movie actually. The issue is not, as the left (supposedly) used to believe that the dumb are reproducing and drowning out the intelligent. The issue is the content of our public thought, though I believe the genetics models seems to work there.
Or more specifically, the problem isn't that the redneck moron's children are drowning out the smart couple's non-existent kids - it is actually that too many of those smart people have willingly decided to embrace idiocy in our society in the name of ideology.

Yea, I asked this morning on the Headline Thread what the hell was wrong with the GOP in ColoradoÂ…was it some sort of Tom Tancredo vs. whoever blood letting or what.
I think Norton can win. Buck, however, has proven to have foot in mouth disease. And we really need Colorado.

When Holder was asked about the presumption of innocence and the possibility of KSM's acquital in a civilian court, the brilliant AG replied, "Then we'll charge KSM for being here illegally."
Guess we always have the illegal immigration gig to fall back on in trying terrorists in civil court.

No argument there. But I'm going to channel Steyn and say that the bigger threat than these smart people embracing idiocy in the name of ideology is that demographically, the trend is against the West (maybe with the US as the only hold out), and for the Muslim world. Remember, the future belongs to those who show up.

The real problem with the draft in this day and age is you can't afford to take everyone, which means the people who actually get picked to go are gonna be angry about it.

Lunch, on the other hand, used to mean strictly luncheon -- a formal meal for entertaining. Seems that over the years, the meanings have muddled in the USA: lunch is the informal, ordinary midday meal, a luncheon is still a formal entertainment, and dinner is only the midday meal in some regional dialects.

I never paid much mind to the boys on Hillbuzz and their pot-stirring about congressman Aaron Shock.
I just saw the congressman make an appearance on a Bravo program that I TiVO.
A Bravo program. About cooking.
So very, very, gay.
If he's not all out and proud, methinks he ought to catch up and work on the proud bit.

Sassy - I have an open invitation to Logprof and his wife to go to Taco Tote - a Juarez taco joint that he loves that has opened four restaurants on this side of the border.
The trouble is that his wife is scared of returning to Juarez or the surrounding area for vacation, so the invite is still open, but unfulfilled.. they'll come as close as Dallas - 600 miles away.

If I were going to guess, I'd say on the gas giants, their higher gravity is the only thing that keeps it from evaporating into space. We might have had large amounts here, but the would have lifted out of the atmosphere long ago. I think (could be wrong here) that most of what we have is a part of the process that formed oil, not an original thing like on the giants.

My complaints about the "Big" sites: Too many folks allowed to post to the site. It's like "Townhall" or worse. Better to have a few stars on the front page and have a section for second and third-tier writers. Or just cut it down a bit. It's a firehose.
Also, comments are overloaded. It helps to require signing up to comment, but the signup javascript was buggy and I had to give up my "K~Bob" moniker because after the glitch, I had to re-signup, and "K~Bob" was still unavailable (from the first time).

I'm a from CO also. East side of the Rockies. I'm a better lurker than poster. One thing I'll say about this dry state (not my imbibed state) is that it cools off at night. And the water knows to be in streams and lakes or be in the clouds. The water doesn't make you walk through it in everyday life. I lived in a place with high humidity that didn't cool off at night. You get out of the shower and never dry off.

I will refrain from correcting the misperception from many, on both coasts, about the amount of snow and cold/ cloudy days the front range has.

PPIC released a poll for the CA Senate.
Fiorina 34
Boxer 39
Undecided 21
Yeah, PPP sure is hitting it on the head, Boxer is just SURGING here.
Boxer is about as safe as any incumbant democrat to poll below 45% in both Field and PPIC just 3 months before reelection in one of the most liberal states in the country.
BTW, an overlooked bonus for Californians- Field pegged generic vote preferrence in CA at 50D 32R in January...its now 44D 41R. Republicans have obliterated the Democrats' overwhelming advantage, yet NO pollsters are brave enough to reflect this...
Posted by: CAC at July 29, 2010 12:33 AM (lV4Fs)
The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Likely Voters in the state finds Boxer with 49% support versus FiorinaÂ’s 42%. Four percent (4%) favor another candidate in the race, and five percent (5%) are undecided.

It was always going to be an uphill battle, but we're doing well for ourselves. This one will be swaying many votes right up to the end.
Posted by: Legendary Film Star Rick Moranis at July 29, 2010 01:38 AM (dUOK+)
Fiorina simply needs to convince more Boxer voters to reject her nastiness, spending, shilling, etc. I think that's a more advantageous position to be in, and certainly doable for a few percentage points. Undecideds will also break for Fiorina, of course.
It's a tough fight anyway. this is normally a blue state. But it's going to cost the dems a fortune to defend, and they very easily could lose.

A lot of people who Boxer needs, were once Boxer supporters and have moved to Fiorina. What can she do at this point to bring them back? Obviously harsh attacks... but again, these people already went from voting for Boxer to rejecting her now. That's not going to translate into much positive momentum for Boxer.
Can you say "Absentee Ballots, Bitches"? What's a little fraud amongst Democrats? Yeah those people don't live in Cali any more and are in fact they are residents of Florida, but they still know their former addresses and they stayed in an Holiday Inn once!

“Thank you for standing alongside us, with the President. Now can you make a donation to help us take on the year ahead?” -- and a disclaimer that funds would not go to political candidates.
If not directed to candidates, then it's an obvious personal slush fund project of the DNC to fund dirty tricks against political opponents, or simply paying bribes.

I'll be 42 in December (damn!). I'll perform my duty in another manner. Seriously, I already volunteer in an organization called CERT. Civilian Emergency Response Team. After 9/11 and Katrina, someone in the gov't realized the feds couldn't be everywhere, or anywhere, johnny on the spot. We might do anything from helping firefighters, to doing searches after a tornado, assisting during an ice storm, looking for missing persons, evac during an H2S leak from the oil fields. We get equipment and training funds from the feds, and do our training a couple of times a month.

He knows that the stupid bill has absolutely zero chance of being passed but he can tour Harlem and tell them all he submitted it so that whitey would have to do some community service.
He has a hearing with the ethics committee chairman(?) today at 13:00 and it is his last chance to strike a deal. Many of the other Democrats are ready to throw hm under the bus.
My feeling is "why should he get a deal"? Most of the stuff is not just unethical, it is illegal and he should not be immune from prosecution.

If I get drafted I will show up. I wouldn't shirk my duty because I hate Obama. Obama, like that burrito you ate last night, will pass. He won't always be president, but our country willl remain and if it requires conscription for defense, so be it.
That aside, this will never pass, it is a political stunt as it always is, even the army has said they oppose this 100%.
Posted by: Ben at July 29, 2010 05:05 AM (wuv1c)
also, something that rangel leaves out is that our government can't afford a conscription army. Where would we get the money to pay for another 1-2 million soldiers, their healthcare for life, benefits, housing, equipment, etc.
We couldn't have a conscription army if we wanted to at this point
Posted by: Ben at July 29, 2010 05:07 AM (wuv1c)
EE's position was that she was "retooling"the campaign and implementing a new strategy with regard to the hostile press. They expected a dip in the polls while they were doing this, but expect to come back strong was they start implementing the new strategy.
Yes we all hope she is successful. In particular I hope the "hostile press" strategy works out. Republicans have been in dire need of something on that score for a long long time.
To date their strategy has been to try to kiss the press's ass and adopt no position that could be tarred as "extreme" which meant keep to the middle of the road RINO positions.
That strategy has been an absolute loser since 2006 and the MFM still hits them with "extreme" over every position. They have to since that is the supplied commiecrat talking point.

I don't know the details, but standard practice is to capture problem bears, tag them, then move them to a different location. Second 'offense', is when they put them down. I had an incident (actually two on the same night) with such a bear a number of years ago. The ranger had been after him for two weeks at the time of my contact. Thankfully, he wasn't particularly aggressive, and I had a gun in case he was.
