— Genghis Welcome to Otterday!
ThatÂ’s what you people call it, right? IÂ’m a little out of the loop on these things. So there will be some otterish things below the fold.
Remember after the 2000 & 2004 elections there were all sorts of stories about depressed Dems & liberals threatening to flee to Canada in order to escape from McChimpybushitlerton’s Amerikkka? (And some didn’t even wait for the elections to make their threats, stamping their feet, folding their arms and screaming “If Bush wins I’m leaving this country!!! And I want a juice box too!”) A couple of articles on the subject here and here. Actually, the WaPo piece is sorta’ pro-American but at least references the topic.
But you never really hear people on the Right making similar threats, and probably won’t this year since the November elections look promising. But simply as a mental exercise, where would you go if you finally decided to say “screw it?” I hear Australia mentioned occasionally. Probably more than any nation on Earth, Oz seems to share the closest affinity to Americans. (Was that redundant?)
Anyway, more and more I hear people suggesting Belize as an alternative. A member of the Commonwealth, English is the official language, nice tropical climate (excepting the hurricanes), seemingly stable economy and government, favorable exchange rate (though someone needs to school me on that if IÂ’m wrong) and fairly relaxed immigration policies. WhatÂ’s not to like? More info. on the place at the CIA World Factbook and blogs such as this one.
So should Moron Nation pool our resources, move en masse and carve out a jungle compound in Belize or in the Aussie Outback? Maybe kidnap Ace and force him to be our king? (We could call the place “Moronia” or ”Moronistan.” Other suggestions are welcome in the comments) Of course, knowing this crowd, it’ll probably end up like this or worse, this
At least we have a ready-made national anthem (Pardon the low quality. Please write to LauraW if you'd like a refund on your AoSHQ subscription. Go ahead, I dare you.):
But enough of that. It's Otter-time!!!
More otters:
And one final Otter:

Pretty abstract, no? I'm a deep thinker...way ahead of my time. Someday my work will be appreciated. But today is not that day.

--I have thought about Belize as well (my dad considered incorporating there), but one huge drawback to it as an escape hatch is that their currency is pegged to the US dollar. They do that for obvious advantages to their stability, so maybe if it got so gawdawful Americans would flee there we could expect them to drop the peg for the same reason they originally adopted it.

The problem is - if a substantially smaller number than 10-15 million flee to Canada, then there's no real change on either side of the border and those who did leave would be saddled by even bigger libtard douches
so I'm still kinda liking Belize, or Galt's Gulch in Detroit

Australia is a wonderful country, sort of America with a bit less of an edge, but as you might imagine, its politics also can be somewhat lefty, sort of intermediate between England and America before O. Were it not for family, I would definitely consider retiring there. Perth is simply a delight, with spectacular beaches on the Indian Ocean. Sydney is more of a NY wannabe, but still a very nice place. Lots and lots of coffee shops, though, which serve Long Black, which is sort of American coffee, but closer in flavor to an espresso. I had a permanent caffeine buzz.

These people have a functioning economy...that's NOT FAIR.

Don't they have absurdly strict gun control laws there?
To be honest, I have no idea. I was there for a conference and a bit of vacation. At the risk of getting all serious during the ONT, besides the election, the biggest topic of interest in the papers was immigration, and how to deal with it. The IIs come in boats all the way from Indonesia, and the Aussie navy seems to capture them and put them on an island. The usual suspects in the government want to let them in to Oz, thereby encouraging others to make the journey. There are mush heads in every country.
BTW, most of their TV shows are US imports, so we feel right at home, if not terribly proud of the picture conveyed of the country. We are from NoVa, and one of the documentaries they played was on the go-go scene in DC, and how the city was pretty much a war zone. I didn't recognize my own city, but I think it made the Aussies feel good.

I have yet to devise a way to capture the tasty tasty quail living in my yard, but I may need to try harder as they make a tremendous racket when roosting on the eaves of the house, right next to the 3 story high chimney!
Also, I would like to collect their eggs. We had mussel shooters tonight at dinner which were garnished with tasty tasty quail eggs. Mmmm.

When he gets practice at that, he'll have learnt how to apply that little filter which keeps most of us from saying the shit we really shouldn't say.
Also, if alcohol is to blame for some of this mess, then he should drink less of it. I'm actually hoping that it's not, because addiction is one motherfucker of a gorilla to have on one's back.

We should encourage behavior that we want to see more of. It's like I tried to tell the idiots in high school: sluts are our FRIENDS. We should be nice to the sluts and encourage their sluttiness. (Not that PGiS is a slut, it's just an analogy.)

Digging it.
Right now the weather is not too different than we were getting in our little corner of SoCal. (I know that'll change!) Main difference is that there are pretty fluffy clouds and the occasional thunderstorm (which freaked out our retarded collie). The other main difference is that something that is 75 miles away takes... get this... 75 minutes to get to! The locals are complaining about the road construction - and there is a fair amount - but it isn't bad at all and, more importantly, it's road improvements like adding lanes, not patching huge holes in crappy roads.
Oh, and we bought a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. It's sweet.
So our transformation to red staters is well underway. Next up: firearms training! :-)

PGIS, I have never been offended by the boob talk or attributed the moniker "attention whore" to you or any of the Morons or Moronettes. I think of this place as being like hanging out with friends at a bar. While having a drink, everyone jostles to get a word into the conversation, while their opinion is topical. If you wait too long everyone has moved on. Also, new topics are continously thrown out. Some peak others interests, Most don't. It takes a while, not to get so much the rules but the flow of the haunt.
When the mood takes a turn for the decidely dark, as when someone decides to rag on blacks or Jews, I don't like it and duck out for a while. I am genuinely dissappointed when someone, whose opinions have earned my respect, spouts some hateful gibberish and gets their ass deservedly booted and banned. It is also disturbing when Ace gets into a very dark place and stomps about eviserating all who disagree with him, even though the vast morjority of the M & M's including myself hold him in high regard.
I like the soft side you ladies bring to the place. Without you we men devolve into dirty, vulgar cave dwellers.

PEORIA, Ill. — Caterpillar Inc.., the world's largest maker of construction and other heavy machinery, said Thursday it will build a hydraulic excavator manufacturing facility in Victoria, Texas, that will employ more than 500 workers.
The facility will triple Caterpillar's hydraulic excavator production capacity in the U.S., and double the number of Caterpillar's U.S. employees making excavators. Construction on the 600,000-square-foot structure will begin next month, with production expected to start in mid-2012.

My son and I were in Seattle at a hotel the last two nights for our annual trip and my neighbors were watching the place. Apparently last night they saw a light on they hadn’t seen before and knew I wasn’t home yet and called the non emergency number and a couple of police officers came out and my neighbor let them in to make sure everything was OK. I told my son that when they saw the mess he’s made of the family room they probably went “Holy crap, call for back-up the place has been tossed”. He didn’t think it was funny. But, there was no bad guy lurking in my house turning on random lights, all was well.
So, the light that was on, here is the funny thing, it is a new solar wind chime a friend gave me last month for my birthday. I couldnÂ’t find the on/off switch so it hasnÂ’t been on, well the other day it blew down from its hook, the cover popped open and there was the on/off switch. So, I turned it on, hung it back up outside and went on my merry way. This being Seattle, it took a few days for it to be solar charged and apparently it came on last night for the first time. It changes color too. It must look really strange from my neighborÂ’s place. It is hanging right next to the window into my family room so from their place it definitely wouldÂ’ve looked like a light on inside.

How's your job? I've lost track - you had a transition not long ago, is that right?
The job is going well. I still don't feel like I know what I'm doing, but I'm told I'm doing well and catching on quickly. My coworkers are pretty cool and most of them are conservatives! It's crazy. I still try not to get too political at work, but it's nice to know there are like-minded people working with me.

That happened to me once too and I felt the same way even though I don't think they rifled through my things. I had set my alarm, then accidentally didn't close the door all of the way. My alarm company's policy is to call my house if the alarm goes off. I had driven off before the alarm sounded, so they sent the police when I didn't answer their call. The cops left a note saying they'd been in my house.

Now, if I had to put kids in school in this day and age, I'd send them to a good public university. I think small liberal arts schools and weird engineering colleges have run their course. For those Seattle morons who havenÂ’t done it, itÂ’s a fairly cool view. Of course I still am having vertigo, which is just not a fun feeling on top of a skyscraper, even one that is only 35 stories! Luckily the walkway is totally caged in.
The elevator operator let my son run the elevator on the way back down, though he was a bit spooked after she pointed out to him the rather large gap between the floor and the elevator car and how you could see all the way down 35 stories to the basement.

1) Other countries are happy to take immigrants if they just wanna live there and spend retirement money (as long as they pay their own medical). Said countries are rather less thrilled about you moving there and taking a job that could have been filled by a local.
2) In recent years the US Congress has decided if you were ever an American citizen you are always subject to American law. So they expect you to keep paying US taxes, for example, and there are a bunch of US laws you will always be subject to (in their minds). Between the banking system and the marines they can pretty much get ahold of anyone that disagrees, too.

Posted by: logprof at August 21, 2010 11:37 PM (BP6Z1)
Typically it only fluctuates a point or two. But sometimes they're not listed for whatever reason due to issues with the match up like certain injuries. I mean a point spread for a patriots game is going to be very different if Tom Brady is injured for the game.
But yeah by thursday they're finalized and you can make changes up until like 5 minutes before kick off I think? As long as the moderators set them up for that. So you know if you think you can skirt that line between Jay Glazer's "is he playing or not" report and kick off on sunday go ahead and give it a shot.

I cried all night the night before. When he got up, I told him I couldn't believe he laid there sleeping while I was suffering. (It gave him a good laugh).

Yes. Let me think back to the plot.... It wasn't bad. The parallel between the old guys and the youngsters was kind of nice. I will admit to a teeny crush on Gus and for some reason, this week's episode screamed Gus. The actual murder plot was so/so. It was more fun watching the rivalry than anything. I think that whoever said it was right - Shawn's turned more into an idiot than a smart guy pretending to be stupid. That sucks.
I kind of like the UFO episode better. Minor quibbles, as usual, but it was fun and geeky. Predictable in the actual mystery (guessed it very quickly).
OH. As far as good shows go, Warehouse 13 is pretty good. Better than Eureka now that they've gone into dumbass territory.

Planning is key. You have to start liquidating in advance, and moving it quietly out in the largest amounts that are not reported to the IRS. There are still a few places left in the world that will hide your money. Liquidate it, hide it, bug out, renounce citizenship, and then retrieve it. It helps to know the right people. From what I've read the US can refuse to acknowledge your renunciation, but unless they know they can get a lot of money out of you I doubt they will bother. It also helps not to be a big fish.
The hard thing for any conservative is to take on the law-breaker mentality required, and to treat the government as what it is - THE ENEMY.

Memphis Beat is ok. I'm so disappointed that Lee only lip-syncs, after I heard that he supposedly has a good voice. So far, the show is better than Rizzoli/Isles (ugh... I'm only watching it for the guys) and not as good as The Closer.

My mom and I went yesterday. It was weird being in a theatre populated by all guys -1 (one other lady there, with another guy). The first exploding body was a little unexpected by both of us, but after that it went smoothly. If I'd known Stallone was the director, the explode-a-guy wouldn't have been so surprising.

I honestly haven't watched as much this season because of what you noticed, & Shawn doesn't even try to pretend he's psychic anymore. He still has great observation & deduction skills (forgot the word for that), but I think it's harder for him to say that they're strictly "psychic". 468 Miss 80's - is Good Guys that Fox show set in Dallas? If it's the one I'm thinking of, I couldn't take the fake Texas accents (you're from Houston, right?), and didn't like that they shoot it in all of the ugly parts of town. Only watched one or two episodes though, so maybe it got better.
IMDB says it is.
Yeah, most people in Houston don't have Texas accents; they either have neutral or foreign ones. Though Houston doesn't have as much Southern influence as it once did, so I think that's of it.
Show I watched one episode of this season was Covert Affairs, mainly because I was interested in her guy friend & b/c I'm a fan of Anne Dudek. It was actually better than I thought, but not worthwhile.

Disney's really getting to me with this Camp Rock thing. All the good and talented people are shoved into the background to make way for Demi and Jonas. The first one sucked (obligatory minority girl wins the contest, just like Bring it On!), so why would #2 be any more worthy of attention?

I like Covert Affairs, but they need to get rid of that godawful title sequence, stat! It needs something slicker and tailored to it. They should hire whoever did White Collar's. Or make an 80s inspired one like io9's Firefly masterpieces.
And yes, I watch Covert Affairs strictly for Christopher Gorham. I'll watch anything with him, ever since Jake 2.0. Pet peeve: His line about "kitten heels," was wrong, though. Skyscraper heels that cost an arm and a leg are nowhere near kitten heels. Whoever wrote that line needs some more research.

That actually sounds rather intriguing. I rather liked parts of last season, but it seemed they either had really high points or incredibly low ones. (They tailed-off @ the end until the big Hitchcock finale, IMO.) I've also heard they're trying to dig into the characters' parts more, which I think might explain some things. Really? I heard some accents where we lived (for 7.5yrs) on the outskirts of Plano, but it was "more country". That particular area was actually more of a farming community until the population explosion. But I agree, H-wood tends to stereotype, esp. when it comes to Texas. I can only imagine the fun they'd have with East TX & the accents & customs here.

Also, I like the story arc of her lost love, and how he hooks in to the CIA. I think the speed they are developing it is good too, better than Rubicon which is taking forever to let the story unwind.

Very true. I always say that a show shouldn't last past three seasons. That seems to be the magic number. Most shows I liked never made it past one season (or a season and a half). If they make it to three, they'll start going down the crapper in #4.
We (in my household) noticed that they seem to have moved Shawn's dad into the police station to save on sets. No more visits to the inside of his house. Kind of sad.
As to the last season, I will agree with the hig/low dichotomy. I especially hated the serial killer addition with yin/yang and how there's a second one. Overarching plot points with big bads are just terrible. (Don't get me started on Monk's big finale...)

Disney has this nasty habit of over-hyping every damn thing. It's gotten worse in the last couple of years, but was really noticeable with the Princess and Frog.

OK, hereÂ’s the thing about Camp Rock, Disney has had non-stop commercials for it all summer, I mean all fucking summer
Honestly? If you watch any cable channel this summer for more than an hour it seems like you're going to be bombarded with the same commercials 20 times. God I can't wait for the fall and Chuck, Big Bang Theory, and Castle to come back on.

As to the last season, I will agree with the hig/low dichotomy. I especially hated the serial killer addition with yin/yang and how there's a second one. Overarching plot points with big bads are just terrible. (Don't get me started on Monk's big finale...)
Personally, I liked Yin/Yang, but more b/c of the execution of the plot than the actual plot itself. Also liked episodes such as "Shawn Take A Shot", "High Noon-ish", & "A Very Juliet". I'd consider them all better than the Monk finale, because that had potential but they really blew the execution.

Miss 80's, I live on the Dallas/Plano border. There's no rural Plano anymore, but I remember the time you 're talking about. I guess there are still some people with country-type accents around here on the outskirts. But the accents I hear most are Vietnamese (nail salons), Spanish (yard services), Indian (computer geeks at work) and my hairdresser is Russian. Not exactly the accents people usually think of for Texas!
Posted by: Mayday at August 21, 2010 08:32 PM (TRgli)
I also think Sonny With a Chance as a show is horribly boring. It's not nearly as funny or cheesy as Suite Life or Wizards. Those are actually the only two shows I like on the Disney Channel. I don't mind Hannah Montana, but it's not my favorite, either. I'll watch it if nothing else is on and it's way better than SWAC.
Have either of you watched Good Luck, Charlie? I've only seen parts of episodes.
Posted by: wherestherum at August 22, 2010 12:22 AM (gofDd)
Suite Life jumped overboard with the cruise ship switch. Wizards is still cute, but I wish they'd get rid of the idiotic sibling rule. Hannah Montana is ok, but Ollie's gone off to another show and Miley rarely ever actually learns a lesson and matures. Not very good. Kind of like Harry Potter, without all the death.
572I like Covert Affairs. They haven’t made her into some sort of “super spy” or anything, she makes so many mistakes, but in the end everything turns out OK. Also, I like the story arc of her lost love, and how he hooks in to the CIA. I think the speed they are developing it is good too, better than Rubicon which is taking forever to let the story unwind.
Posted by: ParanoidGirlInSeattle at August 22, 2010 12:21 AM (RZ8pf)
The lost love piece is the only one I don't like in CA. Maybe because it was done with White Collar. The only saving grace is that she doesn't really know he's involved - and that the CIA is using her. Adds some interest to an otherwise boring plotline. I do like the developing respect between her character and the former director's son. And the fact that she's a little bumbling.
What is Rubicon?

The execution so far has been much better than Monk's. They gave up pretty much after Sharona left - maybe. After a couple of seasons with the new girl it got better, but then it got worse again. That finale was like a big "fuck you!" They didn't even have the decency to try to make it look planned.
I seriously want a Disher/Sharona spin-off, by the by.

What is Rubicon?
It is on AMC before Mad Men on Sundays. The tag line is “sometimes a conspiracy isn’t just a theory” which of course hooked me, being paranoid and all. But it is really slow and I’m having trouble warming up to the characters. Someone else on the ONT really likes it though so definitely other people’s mileage is varying on the show.
Me, I want the new season of Bones. I want to know if they can finally jump the shark and get together this season. I assume no. Of course IÂ’m also making the assumption that theyÂ’ll be starting it 1 year later, and not somehow jumped into the middle because of other circumstances. And hush you haterz, I donÂ’t care what you say David Boreanz is eye candy pure and simple for me.

If you are just retiring here - well, that's another story. You have to pony up $50K, that they keep (non-interest) until you either 1) leave or 2) die. So consider that $50K that you won't see again.
They will tax your monies transfered from the US government (like SS, SSDI, or a pension), if you do it the proper way and have it direct from Uncle Sam to a PI bank account. Me? I have a US bank account that my SSDI goes into, then I transfer using XOOM to my wife's PI account. I think we are wandering in a grey area there.
But other taxes? They don't tax like drunken liberal idiots here. Let's see - Marlboro cigarettes are less than $2 a pack. Local smokes are under $1. Alcohol is cheap ($1.50 for local vodka, $1 for a BIG bottle of beer, less than $0.50 for a can of 'Beer Na Beer'). Food is VERY cheap. You can live a very respectable moron lifestyle on the crap bennies they give you with SSDI. Medicines are cheaper than the US, and most meds, except for narcotics, can be purchased without a prescription.
It's not bad. And, yeah, there's a lot of eye candy for an old moron to leer at

We lived in the Parker/Murphy area back in the early '90s-'01, so we didn't go inside the city much except for school & other things. Dallas is definitely becoming more diverse, though I wouldn't say it's an international city like Houston. In Houston, you have an influx of people from all around the world, expecially with the oil companies. E.g., with my church, a majority of people work in the Enery Corridor, & you have people from Australia, the Netherlands, Puerto Rico, Latvia, you- name-it. It's actually raher interesting, & I like the variety.

As per PGiS and it's centred around a group of intelligence analysts. Their manager was killed and one of the team was promoted to take his position. The dead manager left clues about some conspiracy and the new manager is working on that in his spare time. It's slow because they're doing all sorts of character development about the team, although mainly the new manager, and the dead manager's daughter etc. It's not a 24 thriller.

Can't argue with any of that. They completely dropped the ball in S7, IMO, & I think it wasn't fair to Tony Shalhoub (though he may have played a part as producer). But yeah, the finale just seemed so staged. Even if they'd been able to get the actor who plays Monk's brother, it wouldn't have elevated the plot to a whole other level.

Kind of cute, but stupid in the long run of the show. They could have made up a different rule. For instance, to marry a non-wizard, he had to give up his powers. Or he gave up his powers to save her from something... Anything but only one sibling can be a wizard. It creates unnecessary tension, especially down the line. Especially when you have two talented wizards in the family (and maybe a third one if Max evolves).

My loser ex-husband had a gorgeous set of parlor pipes (smaller than the regimental), all ivory and chased silver and african blackwood, that he'd play once in a while. The bag was goatskin and he'd have to blow into it for days before playing them, just to soften it up. Then he would typically go up one of the Malibu canyons to play them, because it's not something that endears one to the neighbors. It was something to hear, that's for sure.

I think the tattoo is held in the Citadel, which is a great setting if not quite as much so as Edinburgh Castle. For a North American city, it has a lot of history: Royal Navy, Acadians, beautiful harbourfront. No. The Hulk is going to be in the new Avengers movie. So not a reboot. It seems that they have dropped Ed Norton as playing Bruce Banner though.
Ahem, Blade.
But hey let's say that they've had 4 successful franchises. That puts them ahead of DC, which has had only 2 so far. And Marvel is attempting to get crossover movies to occur, and are really only hindered by the franchises that are sold to other production studios. DC is owned by Warner Brothers and doesn't have that hinderance and they've basically given a big Fuck You! to the fans concerning a Batman Superman movie. But hey lets stick a poster of it in I am Legend anyways.

Well, not to throw salt in a flesh wound, but I saw a particular group of conservatives (on Facebook) using a NYT article with data from June (which the article admits). The liberal on both sides of the Atlantic are trying to pass-it-off as recent data, which they would realize isn't the case if they would read their own articles. I don't really care about protecting or lambasting anybody so much as I do about facts that can be scientifically verified.

My religion class in college was actually the opposite; that's interesting. The prof described himself as a Methodist-Buddhist-Hindu-mystic, so he borrowed from different religions. But we had many discussion about those evil white Christian heterosexual males.
I went to a private Christian academy until we had to move (transfer>work). Spent the remainder of HS @ a classical Christian school, & we debated many subjects. They didn't allow us to be intellectually lazy RE religion; rather, we were made to examine them all from every angle (w/ teacher playing devil's advocate). Sounds horrible, but it helped keep us honest & better understand our theology & belief system.

Also, he notes that his solar power system will pay for itself in 15 years (assuming he can ever get PG&E to credit his excess current). What he doesn't note is that this assumes heavy State and Federal subsidy of the initial cost and that the life expectancy of the typical solar installation is 10 years (as of a few years ago when I did some research). Note also that that 15 years payoff assumes PG&E rates and a lot of sunny days. PG&E rates are more than double my current rates.

I had new windows put in several years ago (long before the credit). They cost about $400/pop installed for vinyl double pane. I did not replace the large picture window though.
6 windows at $400 each was $2400 total. Figuring inflation it would probably be at least 3K now with a credit of 30% up to $1500 max. So you would get maybe $900 back out of that cost.
Also, they did decrease my electricity consumption by a significant amount, maybe about 10%. But the real need was driven by the fact the old windows were simply wore out and needed replacement.

924 913 Wow. I still haven't seen Lawrence of Arabia and didn't realize that O'Toole was in it. It seems remiss to have gone so long without watching it.
It's one of Sir David Lean's epics. Have you seen Bridge on the River Kwai, & did you like it? Somewhat the same format, though this one is more about a question of identity. Lawrence doesn't really know who he is, & neither do we.
I wish my religion teacher was more like yours (second paragraph). I went to a Lutheran school that was hung up on Lutheran = holy, everyone else = needs conversion or they go to hell. I have always been a little more... open towards other religions due to my mother and CS Lewis. Much balking and chafing at the bit occured in my two years at that school....
Having been in a school like that (the grammar school), I understand. Reflection & self-examination are good things, because you're now longer allowed to rest on the faith of your parents. I think my faith grew stronger, because I ultimately came to a better understanding of what I believed & why.
CS Lewis is a good one to read about "more basic" issues. My three favorites are Screwtape Letters, The Great Divorce, & A Grief Observed. I don't agree with all his theology, but those 3 explore the hard questions in a way only he can.

I believe so, at a very young age (unless I'm thinking of ... Sand Pebbles? something like that). I grew up on old movies and shows first and moved on to current media in my teens, so it's hard to distinguish films I watched during younger years. This is making me want to watch the older films again, though. Get a better hold on them.
CS Lewis is a good one to read about "more basic" issues. My three favorites are Screwtape Letters, The Great Divorce, & A Grief Observed. I don't agree with all his theology, but those 3 explore the hard questions in a way only he can.
As above, I read CS Lewis early through the Narnia series, which helped shape my views on religion. I tried the Screwtape Letters, but found it boring at the time. Maybe it's time to try the ones you've suggested, now that I am much older. I never even knew that he had a scifi series until this year, too. Sometimes, one needs more than just entertainment, but also thought provocation.

Hell, I'll help you Vic. It is 7:07 PM here in Asia and some the upthread questions to revisit:
I lived in Banchory Scotland for six years and loved it except for horizontal rain, poorly heated houses and wind that rattles the slates on the roof.
Billy Connelly did the song about the passed out Scotsman...."I don't know where you've been lad, but I see you won first prize." BTW, Robin Williams spends a month every summer with Connelly and some other lesser known ain't-rights. My buddies there know them and they leave them alone. (channeling Beach Boys by accident)
The Aussies and Kiwis who excape the high tax mostly seem to be going to Vietnam, along with the Scotsmen. I only know oilfield types but I bet there are other professions. To a man they say it's cheap and they live like kings.

Andy McCarthy's Which Islam Will Prevail puts it out there.
Whether Ground Zero mosque proponents realize it or not, the cause they are advancing — against the will of the American people, and, perversely, under the guise of “religious freedom” — is the Islamist [Sharia] cause. It is the Brotherhood, not American Muslims, insisting that this monument must be imposed on this sacred spot.
It is a “considerable comfort,” Mr. Stephens writes, “to know that there are Muslims in the U.S. like Irshad who are working, tirelessly but mainly out of view, toward the cause of reform. They could use more support and recognition.” But, of course, their tireless work must happen “out of view,” because the Islamists have made it too dangerous for them to work openly. And they are denied support and recognition because the post-American ruling class has made its bed with sharia salesmen like Rauf, who blame America for 9/11 and can’t bring themselves to say Hamas is a terrorist organization.
Two questions. Are Sen.Hatch and Mitt Romney enabling the Obama/Bloomberg post-American ruling class as if they can keep their noses clean by remaining silent on the pervasive Sharian invasion in America? Were otters in Mitt's varmint hunting "experience"?Posted by: maverick muse at August 22, 2010 04:10 AM (H+LJc)

I really liked that song from the classic original musical cartoons on TV.
Knocked my socks off when I finally read ETA Hoffmann's "The Sand-Man" (1816). "All at once Nathanael stopped as if spellbound: he looked down over the railing and perceived Coppelius. With a piercing scream, "Eh! Fine eyes-a, fine eyes-a!" he leaped over the railing.

My religion class in college was actually the opposite; that's interesting. The prof described himself as a Methodist-Buddhist-Hindu-mystic, so he borrowed from different religions. But we had many discussion about those evil white Christian heterosexual males.
I imagine any Indian reading this, knowing both religions, would ask "How in the hell can someone be both?" I don't know this for sure, I'm just guessing. I bet your professor was also guessing and making things up.

But simply as a mental exercise, where would you go if you finally decided to say “screw it?”
Estonia would be my first choice. (Tere, Delta Smelt!) A flat tax, a fiscally responsible government, and a wariness of communism to say the least.
Belize, of course, because they speak English. Also: Jersey, though I hear the cost of living is quite high in the Channel Islands; the same goes for Malta, where English in an official language. Italy maybe, or Slovenia.
Peru is up and coming. By the time I get to "screw it," basic security issues will have been dealt with and it might still be cheap enough to lead a comfortable expat life.

Krauthammer must preface everything he says with, "Of course The Precedent is a highly intelligent man ... so the reason for him doing something so stupid just escapes me. I can't see why such an intellectual, as The Precedent clearly is, would do something so strange as XYZ ..."
I like Kraut, but he's always a year or two behind the times. He's excellent, once he catches up, but that's a long, long wait and the damage is done by the time Kraut realizes it is damage.
Steve Hayes also pulls his punches. I like Steve (and Kraut, too) but they cannot be counted on to express anything close to the truth of what's going on. Delta smelt: I'll try to find you today on another thread but Union station is walking distance to the Capitol but not to the lincoln Memorial. The Lincoln memorial is miles from the Capitol even though it doesn't look like it from the pictures. The area called "Rosslyn" in Northern Va is right across the bridge from the lincoln memorial. The parking garages there would be 5X closer than anything near the Capitol. Howcver I seriously doubt that the garages close? Why would they close?
BTW, the rosslyn station and the arlington cemetry station on the metro are much closer than the smithsonian station to the lincoln memorial.
Personally, I would partk in Rosslyn and walk across the bridge.
