— Genghis ”This is my ONT! There are many like it but this one is mine!”
Happy Ferretday! So yeah, there will be ferrets below the fold. Whether you like it or not. And you will like it. Why? A brief word from Gunnery Sgt. Hartman:

Strong, yet cuddly words indeed. Stuff n' things below the fold.
Yesterday was recycling day at my place, so I rummaged around and found a couple of old things I could re-post. Because, after all, hunting for new and interesting content for you freaks seriously cuts into my “me” time (which mostly consists of serious binge drinking and macrame, but that’s really none of your business, now is it?)
Ace posted the following a couple of years back, when the blog had, like, 3 readers (two of whom were Ace). It's the revised first draft screenplay of Alien III, by William Gibson, and the version that should've been made instead of the dismal thing that was filmed.
Spoiler alert! (It's kinda' self-explanatory. Also, old):
More old: Comedian Tim Hawkins updates some classic songs by now geezerish rock stars.
Here be ferrets!
This first one is for all you wymynfolk here tonight. It's a heartwarming video of a superhawt guy and his adorably playful ferret/roadkill. No, there's no need to thank me. I do this for the love of the work and for the smiles/horrified looks it puts on your faces. What can I say? I'm a giver:
More ferret goodness: Who among us doesnÂ’t own both a ferret and a lion? And to the credit of the owners, it looks like theyÂ’re doing yoemanÂ’s work trying to get the lion to learn to read, even if it would prefer to gulp down the ferret in a single bite. Plus there is soothing music involved.
Ok, fine. You crybabies can haz kitteh vs. ferret, but I do this under protest and only because of the awesome soundtrack:
Speaking of soundtracks, I note that Maet declared an official ONT theme song last night. Well, hold on there Mr. Big Shot Fancy Pants. I'll see your Boy George and raise you one Nick Gilder:
How do ya' like them apples pal?
This concludes tonight's ONT (mercifully). I'll be here through Sunday. Please be sure to tip your waitresses and co-bloggers generously. You've been a lame great audience! G'night!

Unless they've been de-scented, yes. Anyway, I was more talking about their looks (& sometimes playful personalities) than anything. Other than that, the ones in the pet stores mostly sleep.

Weasels are not illegal in CA. Sacramento is full of them.

Clearly true conservatives should resist this bigoted attitude to President Obama, who is a black man. He has had to shoulder the burden of a hostile culture. Only if conservatives support this President will they be able to triumph in November, and work productively with Barack Obama, who is not only historic but also a black man.

Just a little one and I tried everything to alert my four spoiled cats to that fact. i was practically dragging them from room to room after it and throwing them at it. It finally was exhausted, probably from laughing so hard, and I picked it up by the tail and let it go outside. It deserved to live after that. I've never seen another mouse come in, but I can hear them snickering from outside sometimes and am really ashamed of my kittehs on this one. They were pathetic.

We have 14 major projects, including 2 in which we have to set-up & troubleshoot a cassette recorder, overhead projector, video camera, dry mount press, opaque projector, LCD projector, & a document camera. Some of those sound legit, & the others are rather expensive items you'd only find in a large school.

Miss80sBaby, my son's school district has "active pads" for the classrooms which have replaced all the other technology. They are awesome, but require a bunch of training to use. Just turning them on is a challenge. But, they can write on them, play videos, use them as an overhead projecter, link to district videos (for science), play music, run slide shows, etc.

PGIS, she's a Senior in HS this year - we tried to hold her back the first day of kindergarten (it was obvious she wasn't ready to be in school), but it took us 6 years to get the school district to agree to it. Best decision we ever made -
redstaedeb, we had a cat like that - put her down to try and take care of a mouse (our "mouser" was AWOL that night), and she just sat there, looked up at us, and made a face that basically said, "Whaddya want ME to do about that?". I loved that cat, but she was worthless when it came to mousing.....

Now that's pretty cool. In HS, my teachers made copies of everything so we didn't really have textbooks. It sure put a lot of pressure on the copy machine, though. The magnet had their own because we used the packets instead of textbooks. I guess it was cheaper than textbooks and we could write and take notes on the packets. It was definitely easier on my back.

Jane D’oh, you reminded me, I was at a high school this week for a meeting and one of the parents said when the school was built they didn’t put in lockers, it was going to be this forward thinking strategy—safer if there were no lockers (I’m assuming this was just after Columbine). Anyway the plan was the students would have one set of school books for home that they wouldn’t need to bring to school, and each class would have another set of books for the students to use in class.
Only, the school district ran out of money and could only buy 1 set of books. So, for years the students have had to use rolling suitcases to transport their stuff from class to class.
Public school, obviously.

Tolkien travellers upset locals by pitching up camp on picturesque site one month before Pope visit
Irish gypsies
Gypsies have set up camp near an historic beauty spot in Birmingham claiming they have travelled from Ireland especially for the Pope's visit next month.
Fifteen traveller families arrived in caravans and trucks at the picturesque Sarehole Mill - said to have provided inspiration for JRR Tolkien's Lord Of The Rings books.
Local residents now fear hundreds more gypsies could follow suit and descend upon the site, which is gearing up for Pope Benedict XVI's visit in September.

In both cases, it's a matter of depth & having to be careful. With the miners, this Australian company haa to drill 2000-3000ft without further damaging the mine. As for BP, they had to drill 2 holes 18,000ft below the ocean's surface. Neither one of those tasks can be done quickly, which is highly unfortunate.
Best wishes to the miners.

Yes, mentioned in my comment above. Truly sick song. That and the
one about some motorcycle dude who loses an arm or something and he's
laying there dying and ambulances are wailing. Crappy song. Anyone
remember that one?
I remember when it came out and I had to turn the radio off every time they played it. Then I read Alive! which creeped me out even further. There was apparently this whole cannibalism craze going on the the seventies of which I was unaware. Of course, I am from a small town.

Anyway, they were heavy, so we were allowed (well, have our parents) to put casters/wheels on them and pull them.
For a while. Eventually they noticed the floor got all scratched and we had to carry the crates again.
Grade school. Why did we have such heavy books in grade school? WTF?
In middle and high school, classes and lockers were far apart, and you only had five minutes (or maybe it was ten) between classes, so you probably couldn't get to your locker and switch between every single class, so you had to plan ahead.
I still have nightmares sometimes about forgetting where my locker is, or which books I'd need when, or my combination (or missing the bus), but I don't get college dreams, even though I disliked it more.
Thanks, high school. It's been ten years and I still haven't gotten over you yet.

About the miners, what's incredible is the amount of supplies the people at the surface have been able to give them, & through an incredibly narrow slot. They have a diagram here: http://tinyurl.com/2cfbsx2. It also explains part of the difficulty, along another diagram:
Experts are still examining two possible options to rescue the men.
The first, which entails drilling directly downwards from the surface, is considered the safest because it would minimise the risk of another potentially catastrophic collapse.
But even carving through the rock at a maximum speed of 20ft a day, it would take at least 100 days to reach them men, and a further hour to winch each of them up one by one.
The second option is to follow a shorter route to the men by building an underground platform for the drill at the lowest possible point, then cutting vertically through the zig-zag tunnels used to travel around the mine.

Well said! Those worthless fucks only show up if you dare to defend your property so they can arrest you for discomfiting the robbers. The actual theft is an event of no concern to them. That's one thing I like about crooked American cops - generally they still don't mind arresting other criminals who victimize the public.
Anyway, regarding the gypsy vermin, ever notice how they so rarely mention how the Nazi's were rounding them up and eliminating them? I think I know why - they don't want people to start sympathizing with the Nazis.

a lawyer representing two women whose allegations triggered the investigation by Swedish authorities suggests that not only are his clients standing by their claims, but that he may well challenge the decision by prosecutors to close the rape probe of Assange.
So the general vibe was the the Swedes made up charges against Jazz Hands at the behest of the US...an odd idea to put it mildly.
What if the reverse is true? What if the Swedish government curtailed a sex crime conviction to try and keep Assange, as a lefty hero in good standing, going?

338 Do the miners have any equipment they can use to dig from the other end? Even if it's an order or two of magnitude slower than the machines used now, even half a day sooner would be good.
They'd have to dig up the mine shaft. Diagram shows that the vertical tunnel collaped somewhere near the 2,300ft mark on the left, with their refuge being much further down on the right.

Fire destroys all Harris County voting machines
Harris County Clerk Beverly Kaufman Friday morning said she is confident of timely, clean elections in November, even after a fire that destroyed the county's entire inventory of 10,000 electronic voting machines.
Kaufman urged voters to cast their ballots early to help the county cope with a possible shortage of equipment on election day.
"Because I donÂ’t expect to have 10,000 pieces to work with, no matter what we do, IÂ’m sure that weÂ’re going to be putting on a full court press urging people to vote early," Kaufman said.

It's the cloths he wears with it (the helmet has a very sporty appearance, which clashes with the jeans and a poloshirt theme) and the fact that he looks awkward. He looks like a dweeb who is riding to his job at the science lab.

'Israel ready to destroy LAF in 4 hours'
By JPOST.COM STAFF08/27/2010
Report: US envoy told LAF about IDF's plan to another border incident.
The US warned Lebanon that if it did not prevent any recurrence of the border-fire incident that occurred earlier this month, the IDF would destroy the Lebanese Armed Forces within four hours, Israel Radio cited a report by Lebanese newspaper A-Liwaa on Friday.
According to the report, Frederick Hoff, assistant to US Middle East Peace Envoy George Mitchell, told Lebanese Army chief of staff Jean Kahwaji that Israel was ready to implement a plan to destroy within four hours all Lebanese military infrastructure, including army bases and offices, should a similar confrontation occur in the future.

Heh, That's going to make Obama's peace talks next week uncomfortable isn't it.
Posted by: robtr at August 28, 2010 12:12 AM (fwSHf)
Why no, not at all. The talks are between Israel and the Palestinian Authority.
Besides, if some Hezbollah sympathizer in the Lebanese Armed Forces triggers another incident and Israel does in fact wipe out the military infrastructure of both Lebanon and Hezbollah, it will be a very instructive reminder to Abbas about what the Israelis could have done, and could yet do, if the Palestinians choose war over peace.
THIS is what's going to f*ck up Obama's peace talks: counting his damn chickens before they hatch. Here's a thought: why not wait to find out if there will even be a peace deal before planning a sales trip to force it on the two sides?
Barack Obama 'to visit Jerusalem and Ramallah to press for peace'
President Barack Obama will visit Jerusalem in coming months to press for a Middle East peace deal to be signed this year and implemented within a decade, according to a leaked White House report.
The US president's peace plan calls for Israel and the Palestinian Authority to hold a series of regular meetings over the coming year.
Mr Obama, who set Middle East peace as one of his top foreign policy goals when he assumed office in 2009, will make his first visit as president to Israel and the West Bank to persuade both sides to agree to concessions for the sake of peace.
Mr Obama will oversee the relaunch of direct talks between the two sides next week in Washington.
Although Washington is pushing for a comprehensive peace deal within 12 months, implementation will be spread out over a 10-year period, according to a report in Yediot Aharonot, the Israeli newspaper.
Washington wants the intensive talks to cover core issues, including borders, refugees and the future status of Jerusalem, according to the leaked White House protocols of a conference call held this week between senior administration officials and American Jewish leaders.
If the sides fail to reach an agreement on a particular issue, US officials will intervene and offer a compromise, the report said.
At the same time, Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, and Mahmoud Abbas, president of the Palestinian Authority, will meet regularly, the paper reported, citing the leaked report.
Such a strategy should appeal to Mr Netanyahu, who has proposed face-to-face talks with Mr Abbas every fortnight.
"Real negotiations in the Middle East are only direct, quiet and continuous talks between the leaders on the fundamental issues. This is why I offered to hold the talks in this format", he said on Thursday.
Washington will introduce its own bridging proposals if the sides reach a deadlock in the talks.
American pressure will also be exerted on friendly Arab states to make moves towards normalisation of relations with Israel.
However, the US president will have a difficult task ahead of him, as Israeli and American officials are still debating how to breach the first major hurdle expected in the talks: the end of Israel's 10-month West Bank settlement freeze on September 26th.

I just discovered hobos had a ratified code of ethics as of 1889.
Decide your own life, don't let another person run or rule you. When in town, always respect the local law and officials, and try to be a gentleman at all times.6. Do not allow yourself to become a stupid drunk and set a bad example for locals' treatment of other hobos.
8. Always respect nature, do not leave garbage where you are jungling.
etc.

We hit Marmaris, Turkey back in '07. Med port in an Islamic country, very confused town. And we were there in February, so we were the only ones in town.
Sat down at an outdoor cafe/bar, and as soon as they brought us the shitty Turkish beer, the mosque across the street opened up with the call to prayer. We tried to be nice, but every time the guy started up on a new verse, I took a big drink. Was very happy by the time he got done wailing.

Look what happens when you try and search for Lincoln Memorial (site of the Glenn Beck rally) on Google Maps.
It actually changes your search query, that can only be done by someone at Google.
commodore on August 27, 2010 at 10:57 PM
Sure enough, Google is directing people to the wrong spot even when the Google search bar proactively fills in the "Washington, D.C." as you type "Lincoln Memorial." The entry box and sidebar ads will state "Lincoln Memorial" so there's no mistaking that their search engine is working properly... but miraculously, the FDR Memorial is the site which is pinpointed and not Lincoln's.
In conclusion Google Corp is a rat bastid.

Indeed. One of my criteria for determining whether a place has reached a "nuke-worthy" state is the germ situaion. If the environment is so contaminated that drinking the water will kill a person from a Western nation, it's time for nuclear fire to do its cleansing work.
Luckily Detroit can still be suitably destroyed by conventional weapons. That place would be ready for rebuilding if all the ruined structures and welfare leeches were gone. A few MOAB weapons would prolly do.

@623 I would burn myself constantly on that. Also, when the individual honeycombs turn off, or turn down to low, is it instant, like on a gas cooktop? The problem with electric cooktops has always been that they retain heat so you donÂ’t have as good a control as you do with a gas cooktop.
But it sure is damn cool looking and all futuristic.

Apparently, Dang Straights it is, though perhaps the husband did some mischief the police donÂ’t think so. TheyÂ’ve had cadaver dogs in the house several times to search for the body, but because of all the decomposing food, rotting garbage, and animals in the house the dogs couldnÂ’t pick out the scent of a dead body.
I mean I’m leaving open the window of skepticism that the husband did away with the wife and used her hoarding to his advantage, but after having watched episodes of “Hoarders” this doesn’t surprise me.

The fact that you need to do this proves how idiotic microsoft is. The most commonly used items that everyone uses must be added as a custom item.
And I did a quick search and if you want classic menu views it requires third party add in software.

Posted by: ParanoidGirlInSeattle at August 27, 2010 10:00 PM (RZ8pf)
I pick her up and took her into the city where we have a beer, watch a band, walk around the city and talk. It's all good, but I admit there was a strange tone to it all. Like she thinks there's some underlying secret about me that I would never tell.
Then on the drive home, she says, "Can I tell or ask you something and you can be honest or you don't have to say anything at all."
I'm intrigued. This is not the way she talks, so I know this is something super serious.
She tells me after our first date, she was telling her friends at the coffee shop about me. One of the guys who works there hears my name and says he knows who I am. He says, "Ryan ***, I know that guy. Be careful."
. . .
He says I'm a n ice guy, but a paranoid schizophrenic.
After she heard this, she says she distanced herself from me, and was now going on this second date because she wanted to observe me. She said she thought it was really interesting how incredibly functional I am despite being a paranoid schizo.
Needless to say, I am not a paranoid schizophrenic. She told me the name of this guy who told her that. I've never met him, but he's the brother of a girl I was friends with in jr. high and high school. I wonder if he's heard my name before and got his wires crossed and mixed me up with someone else. The girl I was on the date with thinks maybe he has ulterior motives.
It was all very off putting. I mean, how would you feel to find out the girl you're on a date with thought you were a paranoid schizophrenic the whole night? Or, how would you feel that someone you don't know is saying this behind your back. . .to people you're just meeting!! And now there's the uncertainty of if she even believes me when I say I'm not.
She said she thought she was going to tell me what she heard, and I was going to admit this horrible secret. The whole evening after that had just this really disconnected feeling to it. It surprised me completely! And it surprised her when I denied it.

Reallyo, I have no clue how the brother could have gotten it. The only reason I know who he's related to is his last name. I don't know the names of any of this girls' siblings.
Yeah, we're going to see each other again. Our first date was strange but good. We have a very odd interaction. This date, you can't get anything out of or make any judgments on. The deck was stacked and... how could I have guessed?!! "I heard you're a schizo," is the last thing I expected. Why would it ever have occurred to me?
This date might as well have not happened. Neither of us got anything out of it and our relationship progressed no further. Hell, it turns out I never had a chance.
I don't feel mad or anything. It's weird. I feel hurt.

OK, Z Ryan, here’s the thing that bothers me, that the girl didn’t discuss this with you before the date but went on the date with you to “observe you.” I mean what was that about? Was she trying to decide if you seemed OK enough to date even though she thought you were a paranoid schizophrenic? In that case it seems like maybe that’s not a wise choice on her part. I mean not that you actually are one, but she couldn’t have known that until she talked to you.
I guess what IÂ’m saying is, if it were me and I heard from someone that they knew you and you were a paranoid schizophrenic, before agreeing to go out with you again IÂ’d probably bring it up in a phone conversation. I guess you could lie about it on the phone to her, but still you were on the date at an unfair disadvantage, as a specimen under a microscope as it were.
ThatÂ’s just my 2 cents, which arenÂ’t really worth much in todayÂ’s economy.

Z Ryan,
I have no real meaningful advice to give you, but if she will agree to it, ask her to go back and ask that guy some specifics about "your condition". Where did he hear about it and ask her to dig for specifics from him.
That will tell you if he just hates you and is telling lies or has you mixed up with someone else.
You could confront him directly, but people like that will usually just lie some more, if he really is a liar.
Please keep us posted.

Why is everyone in the news for the last few days all hyped up on Katrina and New Orleans?
From Fox:
The sight of people, overwhelmingly children, seniors and poor black people, scrambling for survival like third world refugees in one of America’s major cities, remains a scar on America’s self-image as a modern, powerful society and a beacon to all the world of the promise of “justice for all.” The clogged highways, the racism against people seeking to reach safe ground, the talk show hosts quick to shout “looting” at desperate people simply seeking food, all made for a very bad time.
What absolute bullshit. The biggest thing we should learn from Katrina is that the 24 hour news cycle will cause news people to run amuck. When they can't get news, they'll just make shit up. As for children, seniors and poor black people, scrambling for survival like third world refugees in one of AmericaÂ’s major cities I have this word for the news people.... America's cities ARE the third world!
They are all ran as corrupt communist fiefdoms. Any federal dollars that come in must be doled out to the chiefs of the local gang leaders in power. New Orleans was a prime example of that. So after spending billions of MY tax dollars to build dikes around shit city we find that the money actually disappeared down the corrupt rat hole of Democrat big city corruption and socialism.
And the supreme irony???? The fucking assholes who stole the money for building the dikes sued the federal government for the inadequacy of the dikes and collected more billions of my tax dollars. Its damn easy to win a case like that when the DOJ agrees with the thieves and just says "OK take the money, its not coming out of my pocket".
So my take on Katrina? Fk the news, the lesson that should be learned is big city commies should be left to stew in their own juices. If it was up to me I would eliminate the federal flood insurance program and disaster relief. The Consitution doesn't give them the authority to steal money from my pocket to pay off Ray "Chocolate City" Neagan and his cronies.

So she was a passenger in the vehicle which was stopped for "leaving a smoke trail". Now why do I suspect that that little bit of "probable cause" is ludicrous? And then, how did that give rise to searching a passenger in said vehicle?

EPA Rejects Calls to Ban Lead in Ammo, Fishing Tackle
The Environmental Protection Agency has denied a petition filed by environmental activists seeking to ban lead in ammunition and fishing tackle, saying such regulation is beyond the agency's authority.
The agency's decision, announced Friday shortly after FoxNews.com published its report on the issue, sided with hunters and fishermen who had argued that the such regulations weren't allowed under the Toxic Substances Control Act of 1976.
So perhaps the assholes will listen when the press does act like the press is supposed to act.

LOL, that was the first thing I thought of when I read the news article that said this:
"Officers noticed a vehicle leaving smoke trail of a contolled substance (and) made a stop based on that," Las Vegas police spokesman Marcus Martin told The Associated Press.
One wonders if those officers had watched C&C. One also wonders how they were able to analyze that "smoke trail" to determine that it was a controlled substance.
One also suspects that all charges on this will be dropped as soon as the parties lawyer up.

As for their activity off the East coast we used to not allow them to patrol that close. We have too many pussies in office now.
One wonders if we still do the depth charge thing with hand grenades as an aggravation and to let them know we knew where they were at and could take them out at any time.

I especially like these Armey statements:
As he looks towards November, Armey says that he is “very disappointed” with GOP leaders for not embracing Rep. Paul Ryan’s budget plan. “The decision to not sponsor Ryan’s ‘road map’ is a political decision,” he says. Many conservatives, he believes, “find it intolerable” that only 13 Republicans have cosponsored the proposal.
and,
After Armey praised Lee, NRO asked whether Republicans like Bennett still have a place in the GOP. “We are not interested in a Republican majority in Congress — we’re interested in a conservative majority in Congress,” Armey says. “It is the ideas that are greater than the man or the political party. Senator Bennett has had his time. He had a chance, for example, to stand up for the Constitution that he swore allegiance to [by voting against the Troubled Asset Relief Program]. His failure to do that upset the voters of his state.”
I'm good with all of the above, so I wish Armey would take it upon himself to convince his former colleagues that they need approach the future of the GOP with those thoughts in mind.
Of course, that doesn't address the reality that we won't just wake up on November 3rd having elected nothing but true conservatives, that will take several election cycles. It does set some very reasonable goals though.

An interesting piece on Bloomberg and the mosque:
In recent days, New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg has become a beloved press figure as a result of his unshaking support for the Ground Zero mosque.
Isn't it fascinating how in this environment where rich people are being demonized at every turn all you need to do is a support a popular liberal cause and your financial sins are instantly forgiven?
With this in mind, the good folks at Big Journalism have uncovered some rather startling financial connections between this media mogul and the Arab world that haven't raised any eyebrows from journalists that love to follow the money when there's a conservative at the other end of the smoking wallet.
Consider the uproar last week surrounding News Corporation's contribution to the Republican Governors Association.
As you read Mondo Frazier's marvelous piece "Follow the Money: Could Mayor Bloomberg's Media Business Interests in the Middle East Have Anything to Do with His Support of the Ground Zero Mosque?" ask yourself why the seemingly always curious press have ignored any examination of this billionaire's motives:

Recall that the route doesn't go through ANY populated areas in SC and is actually barely with the State's boundaries. Only just enough to force Sc to pay for a significant portion in construction and maintenance.
But Lindsey's PR had this to say (gladly printed by our own version of the MFM:
A study released in January 2009 suggested that building the South Carolina leg of I-73 could create thousands of jobs and generate more than $1 billion in household income during the five-year construction.
“It’s going to cost billions of dollars,” said Graham during the conference at Magnolia’s in Myrtle Beach, “but when you are talking about stimulating the economy and creating jobs I can’t think of a better use of taxpayer dollars than to construct this new interstate. This is what the federal government is supposed to do.”
Doesn't that sound very familiar? Like I said yesterday, Lindsey, you can take that I-73 route and shove it up your ass sideways.

Bloomberg has learned that the Arab world doesn't do anything without getting something back, and the return will be far bigger than their gift.
What Tiny Mike hasn't yet learned is that when the excrement hits the rotating ventilator and the Muzzies make their serious moves, his chances for survival are no better than those of any other infidel.
The stupid fuck is going to have a look of genuine surprise on his face when he finds himself in the path of the next attack and his pimping of the Muzzie cause doesn't earn him a pass.
