— Ace Thanks to Niedermeyer's Dead Horse and the cobs for helping me put this together.
Do you think your kids would appreciate having their Easter baskets stuffed with healthier items? Well sure they would!!! What kid wouldn't love to find an Easter basket stuffed with plastic eggs, inside of which are dried fruits??!!
But the best suggestions have to be: Tea, and Stationery.
Yes, stationery. Because children love quality writing paper.
You know, if you give your kid tea and stationery for Easter, you're kind of giving them permission to kill you in your sleep.
Might as well go whole hog and give your kid a Pet Fart (TM) as a gift.
And while you're breaking your children's hearts with gag gifts for Easter, you might keep in mind that some people treat even rats better than that:
For anyone feeling a bit sad, here's a picture from a woman who makes Teddy Bears for her pet rat! pic.twitter.com/4KtU3esTnq
— Animal Planet (@MeetAnimals) March 17, 2014A type of insect has been discovered in which the female has the penis -- well, the "intromittent organ," the thing that gets stuck into the other organ.
It's not really a penis, of course. It's just something she sticks inside of the male to painfully leech the sperm out of him.
A study of four species of the Neotrogla genus showed that the penis-like structure of the female, called a gynosome, is inserted into males and used to receive capsules of nutrient and sperm.Once within a male, part of the gynosome inflates and projects spines which anchor the two insects together.
The scientists found it impossible to pull coupling males and females apart without causing injury.
The insect has been named "Paul Begala," from the Latin for "fivehead twatmuffin."
To save money, and to like be "green" or whatever, the Netherlands is attempting an experiment on a length of road whereby they take down all the streetlights and provide illumination instead only via glow-in-the-dark paint used for the road lines.
Here's a mock-up (I think) of what that might look like:

You might not think the basic design of the axe could be improved upon after... what, gotta be like 40,000 years of constant human use, right? But these Finns say they've done just that.
The traditional axe is simply a heavy wedge that is swung at the wood. If it has enough momentum, it penetrates into the wood, spreads it and thus splits the wood.In designing the traditional axe the challenge is to find the optimal wedge shape which both penetrates into the wood and splits it. Too shallow an angle and the axe will not split the wood and too wide and the axe will not penetrate.
In practice, everybody who has tried splitting wood with a traditional axe knows that it takes a lot of power to penetrate and split the wood. Consequently, women and children may have serious trouble operating the traditional axe.
...
When using a traditional axe the work is quite slow. It happens quite often that the axe penetrates into the wood but does not have enough energy to split it. The reason is that there is an enormous amount of friction when the wedge penetrates the wood and tries to split it and this friction consumes the axeÂ’s energy. As a result, you have a log that has the axe stuck firmly inside it. Removing it can be quite challenging at times.
So basically the axe is designed to be used by a powerful man using brute force, and only a small amount of mechanical advantage, to split wood.
The "Leveraxe" is built oddly-- the center of momentum isn't in the middle of the blade, but off to the side. So when it strikes wood, it turns, and in turning, it uses some of the momentum you've given it to split the wood apart.
This video shows what I'm talking about:
So, they built the axe "wrong," making it wiggly and wobbly in the hand instead of straight and solid, deliberately engineering a lot of girlish flopping around into it, to allow a weaker, more feminine sort of man to achieve good results with it.
Gee, I wonder where they got that idea from.
They're showing off new composite photographs from the Hubble space telescope.
Below, a movie of a zoom in from the night sky to a cluster called CLASS B1608+656. I'm not sure if they're implying this is real or really real -- that is, is this actually just a video of the zoom in, or is there CGI animation inserted to make the movement smooth?
I don't know. Cool, though.

Nothing makes me happier than playing with puppies (and talking to them like they're human beings). I'm a big fan of coloring, preferably with chalk or crayons.
BTW - this woman is a college grad, in her mid-twenties.

Well Kool-Ade contains citric acid, which should etch the egg shells enough that the dye "takes." You can dissolve nails with concentrated citric acid; it's pretty potent stuff.

There should be widgets available for most shipping options. So you only have to supply size and weight classes for your items.

On a related note, I wasn't sure how crazy I was about the 2015, but the more I see it the better I like it. Not quite ready to trade the 2011 CS 'vert in yet...but I'm working real hard on talking myself out of a fastback...

I'm not a lumberjack (but I'm OK). But I did stake mining claims for quite a few years, and that required that one chop down a tree every 500 meters on the perimeter line, and square the top of it to make highly-visible posts. Corner posts got metal tags nailed on them. Non-corner posts (identification posts) just had the claim name and post number written on two faces of the squared post with a marker. Of course, I rarely had to chop down anything more challenging than a six-inch spruce or pine to make a claim post. I liked to carry a Hudson Bay pattern axe for that work.

Look for a widget that lets the buyer enter their zip code and it returns a shipping price.
I see it on other sites and I would imagine they should be available as a drop in to the shopping cart web page. Check with your hosting people they may have small business stuff for you to use. For a price of course.

Maybe do actual cost for the foreign shipping instead of a rough percentage? I've had that done for me for some hobby materials although that was through PayPal and not a credit card. Some places used a rough percentage for the initial bill and then refunded the unused amount to my account.

And hell, even cutting wood with saws is still pretty damned impressive when you realize a house must have gone through something like 400 lbs of firewood PER DAY, even in summertime. That means some poor bastard had to cut down and saw up about 80 tons of wood per year for each household.
By comparison, I get plenty of exercise cutting (with a chainsaw) and splitting (with a maul) about 2 tons, total, per year. Posted by: Trimegistus at April 18, 2014 10:31 PM (xaTUa) Hide posts from (xaTUa)

The service departments of Mercedes-Benz dealerships will apply a mysterious white powder to flush the cooling systems of customers' cars. There's a part number for the powder and all that. Meticulous German instructions for how much water to use to dilute the stuff.
It's citric acid, with a ten million percent markup.
It works. Well. Just not worth what is charged.

Many construction trades have a 4 year apprenticeship. With overtime many people have 10K hours by the time they finish their apprenticeship. So, at 10K hours, they are a lower level journeyman with solid-to-excellent skills, but they still have plenty left to learn.
For an engineer/architect, there is a 4 year degree, followed by a 4 year pre-licensing period. Again, at 10K actual work hours that engineer/architect is now a lower level professional. They, too, can have solid-to-excellent skills, but they are rarely in the same class as a solid professional that has been licensed for 10 years.
So, for many pursuits, 10K is more like the first place a person achieves competence -- which is far from mastery.** And that includes putting the damn smart phone down and paying close attention to learning their craft. 10K hours may not make much impact at all on people who don't really try.
**Except for very rare uniquely gifted prodigies who apparently became a master just by being born.

To understand the modern and/or conservative mindset, read some samples of what was said about the Garand between the time it was introduced in trials and, well, we won the war. There was a far better rifle, you know, but political connections made the choice. The damned thing was never going to work right, it was practically an enemy plot. Only sissies need semi-autos anyway. It would never have the hitting force of a 1903, with half its energy bled off for the action. And so on. There were similar rumors on the plus side. It's just how the mind works, or, some days, doesn't.
Also, did you know that John Garand (also Gene Stoner, Leonardo and Michelangelo) was gay? Or was it just Canadian...I forget.

The original Garand chambering in, if I recall correctly, a .257 caliber, would have been magnificent.
Still, the .30-'06 version kicked ass on every battlefield.
Don't get me started on the Johnson rifle though. Great ideas, some good battlefield trials in the Pacific, but I smell the whiff of Chauchat in it's magazine system.
To me, the ultimate Garand variant isn't the M-14 / M1-a....but rather, the Beretta BM-59. Converted Garand, uses M-14 mags, just all round tuned to perfection rifle. Lust. LUST!.
As for a perfect modern service cartridge? Give me a modification of the 6.5 Grendel, but with the shoulder moved forward more like the 6.8 SPC. Then, the damn thing would work with the M-249 and other belt-fed weapons. The Grendel's shoulder is too far back, and the '249's feed-pawl can barely engage it on the shoulder radius.
Barring that, I'll stick to my 6.5x55 Swede rifles. Tack drivers, incredible penetration, great external and terminal ballistics, modest recoil.... what's not to love?
Oh, this isn't the gun thread? Damn, guess I was as think as I drunk you was, after all?

470 The M4 is shorter, has a railed upper, carbine-length gas system, collapsible stock, faster twist in the barrel, and extended feed ramps.

To elaborate a little. Being a leftist means everything is negotiable -- including one's personal morals.
For example, it finally dawned on me (yeah, I'm pretty slow) that every single thing Hairy Reed ever sez can be translated into "this person has not paid me." or "this person has paid me." There is nothing else. All that BS about the Koch's is just a brazen demand that those who make political contributions make sure he gets his cut, too.
Posted by: jc at April 18, 2014 09:17 PM (PlzOe)
Axes, by their nature, are used for cutting, not splitting.
Despite those statements, I've split many cords of stovewood with an axe. It takes at least two skills: 1) reading the grain of the subject piece, and 2) an ability to place the blade in the desired spot.
As far as 1) - techniques can help a great deal. On a straight grained, dry piece, a centered hit can work, as in the movies. On more usual, difficult pieces, an orthogonally oriented, near edge hit will be easier to accomplish, and result in whittling the round into smaller pieces.
The traditional test of 2) is to see if you can split a wooden match stuck upright in the splitting block (let alone hit it). That can be a very humbling experience, especially in a competition.
Sometimes, burying the blade on purpose, and lifting the entire unsplit piece to drop it axe-poll first onto the splitting block, will give the most satisfying results against the more difficult pieces.
Some wood pieces (particularly knotty chunks, or any elm) should be taken as physical embodiments of personal frustrations, that can only be solved by the release of an inordinate amount of exasperation. Most satisfying, once done. Everyone who has done this knows about those special blocks of wood they've set aside, and after much thought and an embarassing amount of effort, finally found a way to split them to size.
In any case, as the saying goes, heating with wood heats you many times: cutting, hauling, splitting, stacking, and burning.

577 Hahaha yeah I don't get why people's ability to live safely in their communities gets so readily trumped by some abstract vision of what the 4th amendment means.

What is the most-consumed (by volume) kind of hard liquor, worldwide?
(We're talkin' generic genres of distilled spirits, rather than specific individual brands. Thus, "rum" would be a correct answer [if rum was the most-consumed, which it isn't], whereas "Bacardi" or some other brand would always be wrong. Also, beer and wine don't count, because they are not distilled.)
Easy enough -- right? Start guessing! And no googling, cheaters! (And even if you do google, its not easy to find the right answer, because there is intentional misinformation out there. I, however, recently saw an industry insider report with the real stats.)
And we might as well make this a drinking game, so for every wrong answer, everyone has to take a shot of the incorrectly named spirit! Posted by: zombie at April 19, 2014 01:18 AM (mizYg) Hide posts from (mizYg)
Actually, your statement "there aren't many options to choose from" is entirely incorrect. Anything sweet will ferment in water (even if unpleasant to behold) and can be distilled to liquor. So you initially go to fruits (brandies) or grains....
Then you note that you're talking about "consumed (by volume)" rather than "sold". Especially in less-developed areas, there is a hell-of-a-lot of liquor that is consumed but never purchased.
I'd suspect that it's distilled rice wine -- whatever that is named -- and that it's popular in a swath from Africa through Bangladesh to Indonesia and north to Manchuria, and virtually none of it has tax stamps. Or labels. Or makes it more than 10 miles from where it was distilled.

Plus the consent decree severely curtails their ability to pull people over.

Distilled fermented sugar cane -- rum
Distilled fermented fruits -- brandy
Distilled fermented potatoes (now mostly wheat) -- vodka
Distilled fermented corn -- whiskey
So I went with the most popular staple food that you can ferment and distill and figured it would be rice -- and rice has been grown across Africa and Asia long enough for everybody and their brother-in-law to set up a mash and a still.

Non-distilled booze usually comes from three sources:
1). Grains
2). Fruits
3). Honey Posted by: The Ethanolic Hat *hic* at April 19, 2014 01:48 AM (AymDN) Hide posts from (AymDN)
Basic booze comes from fermenting sugars. These can come, as you note, from Grains, Fruits, or Honey, but also from sugarcane, sugar beets, potatoes, or -- in extreme cases -- mare's milk [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kumis ].
Any basic fermented alcoholic drink can then be distilled. If you make wine -- whether from grapes or plums -- the distillate is a "brandy". If you ferment something else, the distillate can be called a wide variety of things. In many cases (sour mash Tennessee whiskey comes to mind), the intermediate product is not at all appealing and would presumably never be consumed. In other cases (e.g. nicely-hopped IPAs), the intermediate product is so appealing that distillation would probably never be performed.

Non-fermented drinks usually aren't made directly from sugarcane, sugar beets, or potatoes - compared to the three I listed.
Indeed, any source or sugar can be used, including mares milk and spit.
Also, jenkem, which was mentioned previously. Posted by: The Ethanolic Hat *hic* at April 19, 2014 02:08 AM (AymDN) Hide posts from (AymDN)
Interesting note on the "spit" -- saliva contains enzymes that crack starches into sugars. Thoroughly-chewed starchy food is almost all sugars before it hits the stomach, where bolted starchy food can still be relatively indigestible starches....which your gut fauna will then gleefully turn into methane.
But I digress -- for brewing / fermenting purposes, a certain amount of spit worked into the starchy mass before the yeastie-beasties get into it can do a lot to improve your yield. Typically, this was provided by consecrated virgin hotties in your tribe, so that you could quaff the result without going, "ewwww....it's like being tongued by Aunt Jennie."

Wow. The sugar market is more f***ed than I imagined. Enough of it is grown to not only provide all the raw sugar, molasses, C&H sugar and rum in the world, but also to ferment for the #3 worldwide alcoholic beverage. And it's still price-controlled so that Castro can stay afloat and Floridian land-barons stay wealthy.

No doubt -- but I was thinking: "staple crops -- wheat, corn, rice". They'd have enough acreage to put out some serious alcohol. But sugarcane? I was figuring that was a niche crop. Hell, in Brazil, I figured more acres would be devoted to pasturage than sugarcane. I understand that relatively minor tweaks in the world market for sugarcane allowed Russia to keep Cuba as a client state and are the true wealth of the Bacardi clan. Seems like something small and contained.....
......but #3 distilled beverage?!?!? There's more sugarcane around than I thought.

One thing that didn't make sense about 'Idiocracy' though. Who kept the TV systems and other tech working? Was there somebody secretly running things from behind a curtain or was it just artistic license on Mike Judge's part?

If you have a lot of irreplaceable stuff like personal photos and videos or critical financial and business documents, a BD-ROM (Blu-ray) burner can be a worthwhile investment. 25 GB on a single disc makes it easy to keep many backups in multiple locations. Some expense going in but no worse than the long term cost of off-site backups like Mozy.
If you shoot HD video the capacity is really needed. Otherwise, you may be able to get by with burning DVDs.

In the majority of external drive failures I've seen, the drive itself is fine but the electronics in the enclosure portion failed. The accumulation of bare drives that used to be in enclosures lead me to purchase a drive dock. The first one was a cheap USB 2.0 model but I now have a much better USB 3.0 that handles two drives at a time. The brand is Cavalry and it's usually around $40 but sometime deals turn up.
There are a few externals that cannot be extracted to be used as a bare drive due to integration of the SATA to USB bits but I've yet to run into one.

Nah, we've got this "family retainer" guy.....the BH's sister originally found him by virtue of being a social worker for an adjacent county and picking up his nephews.....but we started working with Roberto even before we bought this house.
A while back on this thread, people were talking about clearing ground with axes and saws.....Roberto would fit right in. I'll be talking about "we need a hole right here, about this big, and deep enough to put this in it -- let me go get some shovels and a cart" -- and when I get back, he's cleared half the hole with his bare hands. It's a serious challenge to try to keep ahead of him.
So, tomorrow is going to be some stuff that the BH decrees, and an 8-hour scramble to try to manage the feedramp for Roberto.

I am thinking LTD may have tax advantages too. If the pain originates from the neck is it a vertebrae problem? If it is similar to lower back pain it is caused when the soft tissue between the bones collapses and caused the bones to pench on the nerves (IIANM),
I have neck pain if I go w/o my neck pillow for more than a few hours. I strained the neck muscles and probably flattened out that soft tissue when I fell down the stairs here. Aldo broke my left elbows in three places.
Have you tried using one of those neck pillows? You have to use it for a while, before the pain starts, or it plays "catchup".

Good Morning Morons. Today is Saturday, April 19, 2014. On this day in 1775 the battle of Lexington and Concord occurred in the American Revolutionary war. It was hailed as the start of the war and made famous in a poem by Ralph Waldo Emerson as the "shot heard 'round the world". In actuality shots were fired before this battle and, like most wars, it is difficult to pinpoint a single day, event, or battle as the start of the war. But after centuries of school children reading the poem aloud and crying out that phrase it has become the popular myth. In another 100 years the phrase will probably disappear because the amount of coverage the early patriot events get in history books is shrinking to minuscule paragraphs.
Perhaps stuff like the Schoolhouse Rock thing will still be around:

The Obama administration once again has punted on a final decision for the Keystone XL pipeline, announcing ahead of the holiday weekend it is extending a key review period indefinitely -- a move that could push off a determination until after the midterm elections.
I don't understand Fox's rationale for saying it will be postponed until after the elections. The support of the eco-Nazis does not get the Democrats a whole lot of votes and neither does pissing off the unions. I also predict that this pipeline will never be implemented as long as the Communist 'n Chief is President.

And make sure you have the Irving Berlin song all down. I had to sing that song and do a bible reading for an Easter play when in the second grade. I suspect that any school doing an Easter play now would be immediately shutdown, razed, and burned by elements of the ACLU and the BLM. But not until after the Dept of Education SWAT team had killed every teacher and participant with heavy weapons and tanks.
