— Open Blogger Well Moron Nation, I spent half a day in blogger retirement and I got the emergency call to fill in for Genghis. I promised to keep it on the down low but it would seem Maet is in Mexico trying spring Genghis from a Tijuana jail. He wouldn't tell me what he's in jail for but I'm sure we can have fun speculating!
Well let's get this Caturday started. How about a little musical ditty?

I swear, this video here is a sign of the apocalypse or at least that the recession is deep. So deep that the Decatur Central High School in Central Indiana, so desperate for money, shot this little video to raise funds for their school. I know, I know, it's a reenactment of a scene from Glee.
Once again the UK is on a story that I haven't seen over here. Increase in American squirrel consumption.

(LEAD) S. Korea evacuates islanders on signs of N. Korean shelling (ATTN: RECASTS lead, para 3,5)
SEOUL, Nov. 28 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's military ordered civilians on Yeonpyeong Island to evacuate to shelters, military officials here said Sunday, as signs of North Korea's artillery firing were spotted.
"The emergency evacuation order was issued as of 11:18 a.m.," a military official at the South's Joint Chiefs of Staff said. "The military was also put on high alert."

Good grief! Just go to Costco, RiteAid, CVS, Target, pretty much anywhere, they're about 3 bucks a box. I put up some lights today on the big front window (inside), major climbing around bullshit, two sets of icicle lights, got it finished, plugged 'em in. D'oh! One set twinkles, the other doesn't. Sigh. Open first beer of the day. Start over. But they look really nice. I put some in the bedroom window, too. All twinkling. Labeled the rest of the sets for future reference: works/no twinkle, works/twinkle, doesn't work (yes, I kept that one, I still don't know why).

Posted by: OldcatIndeed, you're right about 1950. But that was when they were led by a true believer. I have done some reading about the Kims and their regime, but I'm finding it harder to get a grasp on them than on the Soviets.
Is it correct to assume that the rest of the military has a better grasp of reality than the family Kim? And that they can guide the nut-jobs (or nudge their insanity?) in a rational direction?
The initial assumption that this was another round of Dane-geld still feels accurate, but I keep having doubts.

Perhaps. But the NKs do have artillery that can range on the capital. While the damage would be less than alarmists say if they started firing. people would get killed. That's a hole card that SK can't ignore just because they are in a snit.

Well, a nuke missle overhead would be a real bad time. But yes, that's why its a good 'sabre rattling' move. Fire a air to ground missle in the general direction of the fleet, watch it get shot down and you have a new 'incident' without anything irrevocable happening.
Seoul would get some damage, and civilians would die. But the estimates of deaths and damage are probably excessive - look how hard it was to kill the soldiers in trenches in WWI. And in the other direction you just have to blow up all the holes they have to shoot out of with smart bombs to eventually wear them down. So the time they would have to fire would be limited. But a single preemptive strike to take them out before firing a shot is impossible.
Its just the kind of sticky situation that makes bribing the bad guys compelling.

This is true and it might take awhile to eliminate those tubes. When I was stationed at Kunsan AB in the 90's we knew that but weren't worried too much about their Air Force. The people near the DMZ would be in for a rough time but as soon as the NK army started moving south it would be like the road to Basra in Gulf War 1. There are only a couple of corridors that are suitable for tanks and they are well known. They would be like sitting ducks.

The fact that their artillery is in hardened bunkers and only pops out to fire is an unintended weakness. Certainly they will be able to get off a withering initial volley. However, if the South Koreans and the US can force their artillery pieces into their bunkers and keep them there until Pyongyang is riddled with bomb craters, the regime may fall before it gets to use the artillery pieces for a second wave of strikes.

As to a nuke lit off over our carrier group, the Norks have barely demonstrated the ability to weaponize plutonium, let alone miniaturize a warhead for missile use. Plus our mil spec computers are hardened against EMP (gallium arsenide microchips, Faraday cages and so forth).
As Bill so aptly pointed out, a land invasion of the South is exactly what our military is most suited for countering. 'Bloodbath' wouldn't do to describe this outcome.

Bill R. & Oldcat, I'm sure not advocating that the Norks stand any chance on a successful invasion of the South. I'm just saying that there would be a human and infrastructure cost to the South. Remember that our troops are suffering casualties via 1911 era Enfields in Afghanistan.
I agree. Actually going to war has almost zero chance of working out well for the Northern leaders. Attacking them in turn has a pretty severe human and political cost for us and the ROK. Maintaining the status quo by buying the NK off is by far the best option, even if a decent president was in charge. With Barry running things, we really really want them to buy them off. Fighting the Korean war would be bad enough without bullshit rules of engagement the Dems might well put in place.

They have had surface to surface missles that can hit most anywhere in SK except Cheju Island for many years now. Their artillery can reach Seoul which is close to the DMZ. That missle they sent over Japan could probably hit Cheju but it is unknown if they have a quantity of those or not. And as Gnubreed pointed out, the ability to explode a nuke and put one on a missle is two distinctly different things. The big question is, are they moving their troops to the forward staging areas or are they just playing chess with their missles? The troops are key.

Given that the report seemed to indicate these were based near the china sea, where the exercises are being held, it seems like this is the chess move. In a real war, it would be a good way to get your missles blown up, to put them on the pad and not fire them at once.

"Barack and Michelle Obama sent a goodwill message to Prince William and bride-to-be Kate Middleton today during an interview about their own private lives. The U.S. First Lady said William and Miss Middleton looked like best friends, adding: ‘Hopefully you will be as happily married as Barack and I.’"
Wow. Just wow.

Their marriage is the stuff of legends. Like Jack & Jackie, Bill & Hilary, and Al & Tipper, the Obamas have a marriage that we should all emulate.
BTW, I walked in to the room while MrsCaniac was watching something about the Prince William marriage. The lady being interviewed said that his bride to be is a fashion icon like Jackie O, Princess Dianna, and Michelle Obama. MrsCaniac turned the TV off and decided the litter box being cleaned was more interesting than the show.

Is it because she looks like a movie character, or is it the setting? Doesn't really bother me, but I don't have any problems with dolls.

Reminds me-- when I was an understand, our history club would watch historical movies. One year we were stuck watching National Treasure (long story), and lots of jokes were made about Masons. Someone wanted to know about Masonic rings, and one of the guys held up his hand. Yeah, there were some red-faced people in that room.

You may want to rethink that.

The setting is merely disturbing. But there's something about the way she's staring into the camera.

The setting doesn't bother me much either from watching so many classic movies that involve children's nurseries (The Railway Children, etc.) Though I guess she does look a bit like those twins in The Shining, and the lighting could cause it to look creepy depending on how you approach the photo. I also viewed the original 1st, and it makes the picture look different.

I must confess, I didn't read any of the above comments like I normally do. I just wanted to once again express my deep gratitude for all the subloggers who filled in this week and did such an outstanding job. You guys rock!
So that whole Somalian would be bomber/terrorist was in downtown Portland trying to get his Jihad on while we were down there. We were shopping really nearby the Christmas Tree Lighting. We had some friends from Seattle who we hadn't seen in a while who were at the event with their kids. We met them for dinner at 6 p.m. a few blocks away from the site, blissfully unaware (until this a.m.) of the potential harm we were all in.
You can imagine our shock this a.m., when my BIL showed us the article (brief) in The Columbian newspaper. Later, while at the mall, my husband got on the Yahoo news page and read their article. The guy began wanting to kill Americans at the age of 15. We read through some of the comments in the Yahoo article. One of them mentioned that this was all George Bush's fault since this man's desire to kill started when he was in office. It also mentioned in the article, that the undercover FBI guy tried to give this guy an out. He mentioned to the jihadi wannabe that a lot of women and children would be killed at this tree lighting ceremony. He said he didn't care.
My favorite comment was something along the lines of "I hope he enjoys his 72 virgins when he gets to the Oregon State Prison." Another commenter mentioned that the city of Portland opted out of some federal anti-terrorism program some years back. Yup, The City of Roses and tolerance was one "Allah Ackbar" away from sustaining a major terrorist incident--all while I was there!

Posted by: Racefan at November 27, 2010 10:32 PM (E9Tuy)
Thank you, racefan! My BIL and I were talking about it. I was like "What if that guy could have assembled the bombs on his own? What if he had found someone to help him who was not an undercover FBI agent?"
I think we would have been ok, but our friends (3 dads with 5 kids) could have been killed or seriously hurt. It's ironic because Portland is Moonbat Central, The City of COEXIST and weekly anti-war marches in the downtown area. Of course the libtards are blaming:
1. GWB
2. The FBI for "entrapping" the guy.
I'm sure he'll lawyer up and get a few months in some psych ward, be declared mentally incompetent to stand trial, then be miraculously "cured" and released shortly thereafter.
