While this is perfectly accurate, I'm smart enough to realize a starship command isn't much fun if you don't have a crew to boss around or get into bed, in the case of female crew. It's worse than Starfleet clamping down on officers' pension budgets or sending out more memos about sexual harassment. Somehow those memos always seem to get lost in subspace static, no matter how many times I tell Uhura to make sure they don't get through. Take this guy Commodore Decker. One day while Uhura was scanning the dial to make sure there was static on the channel to the HR Department at Starfleet, she caught a distress signal from Decker on his ride, the Constellation. I figure this guy Decker, being a flag officer, can't park a bicycle on a football field without banging into the goalposts. So he probably ran into an asteroid or something and needs the Tow Truck Enterprise to tractor-beam his leadbottom back to space dock. When we arrive he didn't just have a fender-bender with a chunk of carbonaceous chondrite. His vessel has more holes in it than the chorus line of the Rockettes and if the hull were any more scarred you could call it the USS Moby Dick. Commodore Ahab is still aboard when we beam over, looking like Ray Milland from "Lost Weekend" and deliriously tells us his entire crew is gone, vaporized along with the planet where they went after abandoning this perforated Pequod. Seems there is some monster machine loose that swallows planets like Sulu smokes poles. Now, this freaking disaster makes Decker about as unhinged as Bones gets when you sneak into Sick Bay at 0100 hours and mix the Cialis with the aspirin, so we send him over to the Enterprise for some antidepressants and a shave. Like I said, Decker is a flag officer, so instead of being a good boy and just pulling rank on the quartermaster for a free uniform and polished boots, he pulls rank on my entire fucking ship and plants his Commodore's cheeks in my chair. There I am with Scotty, still onboard the Constellation trying to get the engine to turn over, repairing shit with duct tape and jumper cables. Let me tell you, the inside of that ship looked like the Starfleet cadet barracks during hazing week and someone just pulled the Kobayashi Maru prank. Somehow Scotty manages to plug wire A into socket B despite his hungover state (the only state he knows), the viewscreen lights up and shows me Commodore Douchebag driving my ship straight at this bugfucking giant neutronium blowtorch with a mouth so big it makes Nurse Chapel's hands look almost feminine in comparison. Well, fuck me in a soda fountain because the planet-muncher looks like a five-mile long ice cream cone, except that it's been spray-painted by some colorblind alien with Krylon glossy Candy Apple Grey. I'm fighting like mad to keep from bursting out in laughter, but what is it with spaceships and food? The skinnies from Epsilon Eridani designed their old UFOs like pie plates, so this ain't new. I guess the next Klingon battlecruiser will look like a chocolate eclair, and after the Enterprise is refit, it will leave space dock looking like a banana split with maneuvering thrusters and portholes. So I'm asking myself how something that looks so nutfucking lame can really be so scary wicked, when I see it belch some kind of death ray at my farking ship because Commodore Obsessive-Compulsive has decided to attack it like a mouse fucking an elephant. A lot of ambition for little result. I'm screaming at my cell phone that I'm gonna grind Decktard the Delirious into Commodore Chili if he doesn't back off, and Decktard goes all "Don't You Know Who I Am I Will Have You Busted" on me. While I'm deciding how many different ways I'm going to pooch-rape this gold-braided gasbag once I get my mitts on him, a miracle occurs proving that if there isn't a God then at least there's blind fucking luck. Spock actually has an idea. He can use mumbo-jumbo regulations to relieve Commodore Crash'N'Burn of his phony command so we can do the sane thing and bug out of here before the Ice Cream Cone of Doom gets hungry again. With the perversity of the universe at a maximum, this stunt prompts Commodore Crazy to sucker punch a few redshirts and steal a shuttlecraft. Will someone at the Starfleet Design Bureau please explain to me why, on a starship with computer chips and sensor pickups built into everything from the coffee cups to the urine disintegrator, it's easier to steal a shuttlecraft than a ride on the turbolift at chow time? I mean, don't we even have keys to the damn things, or do they just start if you put them in neutral and push them down the hangar deck? Since losing half a starship and all his crew wasn't achievement enough for Commodore Car Thief I guess he had to see if dusting a shuttlecraft would burnish his record, which would be officially closed because he planned to frag himself in the process. He drove his ship straight into the Giant Death Bugle. Nice idea, bad execution. It figures the exploding shuttlecraft would give the monster killbot a little indigestion, but I'm James Fucking T. Kirk and I don't do things by halves, you fairies. The better plan is to cram the Constellation down Death Bugle's piehole and give it a battleship-sized version of Mentos-and-Coke Syndrome. The Constellation is such a steaming pile that I have to practically steer it by hand and bail out of the fucking thing at the last minute, but the transporter timing is critical. Unfortunately the timing has to be handled by Scotty, and he was never on a kissing basis with punctuality, much less full body contact. So I just do what I do best: Yell into my cell phone to beam me the ever-fucking sweet bugnuttery out of here, just as I'm entering the Krylon Waffle Cone of Destruction. Like solving most of my scrapes, yelling usually does the trick; that, or giving the Kirk eyes to a defensless female. That one is always more fun, but you need a female around for it to work, and not be on the verge of a matter-antimatter detonation the size of the Federation budget deficit. That whole fustercluck was a bad one. Lots of people got dusted, ships smashed into atom porridge. A loony four-striper stole my command and I didn't get laid once from start to finish. Memo to Starfleet: 1. Keys on the shuttlecraft 2. A spaceship is not a dessert

Been a while, but the way i remember us skinning them was to tie their cute little back paws to a string that was attached to a nail on a post and then we'd cut the skin away from the back legs and tail, then grab the tail and just pull straight back, the skin would come right off. Cut up, cook how how you want and chow down.

It's really surprisingly good - kind of short, but it's like Walpole was strung out on amphetamines when he wrote it. Imagine the entire plot of War and Peace condensed to about 120 pages. The pace is absolutely manic.

Good grief!  Just go to Costco, RiteAid, CVS, Target, pretty much anywhere, they're about 3 bucks a box.  I put up some lights today on the big front window (inside), major climbing around bullshit, two sets of icicle lights, got it finished, plugged 'em in.  D'oh!  One set twinkles, the other doesn't.  Sigh.  Open first beer of the day.  Start over.  But they look really nice.  I put some in the bedroom window, too.  All twinkling.  Labeled the rest of the sets for future reference:  works/no twinkle, works/twinkle, doesn't work (yes, I kept that one, I still don't know why).

Well, a nuke missle overhead would be a real bad time. But yes, that's why its a good 'sabre rattling' move. Fire a air to ground missle in the general direction of the fleet, watch it get shot down and you have a new 'incident' without anything irrevocable happening.

Seoul would get some damage, and civilians would die. But the estimates of deaths and damage are probably excessive - look how hard it was to kill the soldiers in trenches in WWI. And in the other direction you just have to blow up all the holes they have to shoot out of with smart bombs to eventually wear them down. So the time they would have to fire would be limited. But a single preemptive strike to take them out before firing a shot is impossible.

Its just the kind of sticky situation that makes bribing the bad guys compelling.

This is true and it might take awhile to eliminate those tubes. When I was stationed at Kunsan AB in the 90's we knew that but weren't worried too much about their Air Force. The people near the DMZ would be in for a rough time but as soon as the NK army started moving south it would be like the road to Basra in Gulf War 1. There are only a couple of corridors that are suitable for tanks and they are well known. They would be like sitting ducks.

The fact that their artillery is in hardened bunkers and only pops out to fire is an unintended weakness.  Certainly they will be able to get off a withering initial volley.  However, if the South Koreans and the US can force their artillery pieces into their bunkers and keep them there until Pyongyang is riddled with bomb craters, the regime may fall before it gets to use the artillery pieces for a second wave of strikes.

183 Fascinating book on the North Koreans - Nothing to Envy by Barbara Demick. She interviewed several people who'd managed to defect into China, and then on to South Korea. Basically, the book tells the stories of their lives in NK, especially during the last famine. Terrible and sad and infuriating. Also, she describes how hard it is for them to integrate into SK society. Peaceful reunification, if it ever comes, will be a real bitch. Not that that's looking really likely now...

Since they had to move them to the forward areas, these don't have the range to hit anything populated that their arty can't hit already. They could fire on the fleet if ships get in range.

They have had surface to surface missles that can hit most anywhere in SK except Cheju Island for many years now. Their artillery can reach Seoul which is close to the DMZ. That missle they sent over Japan could probably hit Cheju but it is unknown if they have a quantity of those or not. And as Gnubreed pointed out, the ability to explode a nuke and put one on a missle is two distinctly different things. The big question is, are they moving their troops to the forward staging areas or are they just playing chess with their missles? The troops are key.

Given that the report seemed to indicate these were based near the china sea, where the exercises are being held, it seems like this is the chess move. In a real war, it would be a good way to get your missles blown up, to put them on the pad and not fire them at once.

So that whole Somalian would be bomber/terrorist was in downtown Portland trying to get his Jihad on while we were down there.  We were shopping really nearby the Christmas Tree Lighting.  We had some friends from Seattle who we hadn't seen in a while who were at the event with their kids.  We met them for dinner at 6 p.m. a few blocks away from the site, blissfully unaware (until this a.m.) of the potential harm we were all in. 

You can imagine our shock this a.m., when my BIL showed us the article (brief) in The Columbian newspaper.  Later, while at the mall, my husband got on the Yahoo news page and read their article.  The guy began wanting to kill Americans at the age of 15.  We read through some of the comments in the Yahoo article.  One of them mentioned that this was all George Bush's fault since this man's desire to kill started when he was in office.  It also mentioned in the article, that the undercover FBI guy tried to give this guy an out.  He mentioned to the jihadi wannabe that a lot of women and children would be killed at this tree lighting ceremony.  He said he didn't care. 

My favorite comment was something along the lines of "I hope he enjoys his 72 virgins when he gets to the Oregon State Prison."  Another commenter mentioned that the city of Portland opted out of some federal anti-terrorism program some years back.  Yup, The City of Roses and tolerance was one "Allah Ackbar" away from sustaining a major terrorist incident--all while I was there!
