— Maetenloch Welcome to the boringest quarter-assed ONT ever.
Okay this might have appeared on the ONT before but what the hell, it's worth watching again. This lady was testifying before the Santa Cruz city council about east coast slavery, the need for a perfect pesticide, and why food should be free.
Just remember - her vote counts just as much as yours.
Yet more evidence that Obama didn't write his own auto-biography.
In late 1994, Obama finally submitted his manuscript for publication. Remnick expects the faithful to believe that a mediocre student who had nothing in print save for the occasional “muddled” essay, who blew a huge contract after more than two futile years, who wrote no legal articles, and who turned in bloated drafts when he did start writing, somehow found the time and inspiration during an absurdly busy period of his life to write what Time Magazine would call “the best-written memoir ever produced by an American politician.”

Do you think he'll start every part of his testimony with, "Because I studied the martial arts for many years...."
After over-exerting and injuring myself last Tuesday, I managed to run 8 miles again tonight.
I was tired, almost to mile 8 and ready to quit... but a fetching girl came in and started on the treadmill next to me. I suddenly wasn't so tired. Imagine that.

Guy goes to confession. "Father, I have sinned. I said the F-word."
"Well," says the priest, "give me the context."
"OK, Father, I hit my first shot off the tee and it was a beauty! All of a sudden the groundskeeper drove by and my ball hit his cart."
"Was that when you sait it?" Asked the priest.
"No," said the guy. "The ball then hit a nearby trash can."
"Was that..."
"No, the ball bounced off the trash can and hit a tree."
"Was..."
"No," the guy interrupts, "the ball bounced off the tree and hit another tree. Then, it bounced off that tree and rolled to just about a foot from the hole, then..."
The priest interrupts him. "You missed the f*cking putt, didn't you?"
Anyway, hope y'all are having a great evening!

I think I just over exerted myself, because when I tried to run again, my muscles were too tight and hurt, and my knees and ankles hurt too bad to run on them. It's likely that I increased my speed by too much that day, and then didn't get a good enough stretch in after.
I took a couple days off and built myself back up on the elliptical.

Actually knew a guy that did the mail order bride thing....I felt a little sorry for him when I heard he got scammed big time.
Me too. Guy I grew up got a mail order bride from Indonesia about 15 years ago (not sure exact date but soon after they had that huge financial collapse.) Course she was his "pen-pal" coincidence he had female pen pals - all from countries where mail order brides come from, Indonesia, Ukraine, etc.
They got married - big church wedding. She was from Christian minority there. Went to the wedding and thought it was the saddest thing I had ever seen - bride barely spoke and drank only warm water the whole time and wouldn't eat. Turns out she's college educated former banker who lost her job and married a big, fat loser here. They're still married - although I think the relationship is more like brother/sister than anything else - like Henry VIII and Anne of Cleves. They had a daughter who's about 10 now. She's back into banking and he's Mr. Mom. strange. The wife is very close to the mother-in-law and her family has been to visit several times. Still very, very strange. He just picked her out of a brochure for crying out loud!

Yeah, you need to be careful. You also should do a couple of days of cross training to prevent injury. You really need to find a race. I bet you would be ready for a 5k early this summer, and a 10k by later in the summer. I even think it would be possible for you to do a late fall half marathon. runningrn, actually donÂ’t the hobo spiders around here give a nasty bite? Not the same class as the black widow or the brown recluse, but not the nicest thing to endure either. But I can never remember if itÂ’s the hobo or the wolf spider.
I wouldnÂ’t let my neighbor kill a spider that was in the box where the switch for my pool cover is, he took it out and put it down at the end of my very large yard. The next day the spider was back in the box. It didnÂ’t get a 2nd chance.

The worst had to be after Hurricane Isabel a few years ago. Our area has lots of oak trees, and the morning after, all the neighbors were helping each other clean up all the leaves and debris from adjoining yards. My neighbor's wife was picking up the leaf piles the guys raked and putting them onto Mr. RB's truck. When they unloaded the truck in an empty lot, the guys found a copperhead in it. They figure the wife picked it up with a bunch of leaves.

Surely you've heard of the Homestead Act from the ~1850s. I'm pretty sure there still is free land, in Montana and Wyoming anyway, if you can provide a convincing strategery for paying the property taxes.

Yoshida, who throws her knuckleball with a sidearm motion,
A sidearm knuckleballer? What a nightmare for the hitters - they've never seen anything like that.
They'll hit her balls out of the park more than they did Mitch Williams in the 93 World Series.
She can't knuckle ball her way through the whole game either -- what about her other pitches? The article doesn't say. This seems to me nothing more than the baseball version of "hope 'n change."

I love Pawn Stars. (Unfortunately, my kids do too, though I don't think it's appropos for their ages!) I just went looking at AMC to see the premiere date for Mad Men. It's not listed, but I did find this promising tidbit for tomorrow morning:
9:15 am The Three StoogesCurly enters a state-fair milking contest.
9:45 am The Three StoogesThe boys are mistaken for interior designers
Wonder how I missed those?

runningrn, actually donÂ’t the hobo spiders around here give a nasty bite? Not the same class as the black widow or the brown recluse, but not the nicest thing to endure either. But I can never remember if itÂ’s the hobo or the wolf spider.
I wouldnÂ’t let my neighbor kill a spider that was in the box where the switch for my pool cover is, he took it out and put it down at the end of my very large yard. The next day the spider was back in the box. It didnÂ’t get a 2nd chance.
I believe we have mostly wolf spiders which are harmless, and yeah, the hobos are bad (funny that!) I guess it's true, the only good hobo is a dead hobo--ha! And yeah, if it's really big and scary, then as the dude in Karate Kid said "No Mercy, sweep the leg(s)"!

I have a similar question. I was running..well stumbling... to the refrigerator to get me some sweet Sam Adams and I stubbed my ankle. By that time, I was so far in the bag that the busted ankle dint really hurt yet but the sensation of falling caused me to void my bowels. Now, I usually anticipate this kind of thing and don't eat a whole lot of corn or peanuts as that kind of roughage tends to rip the delicate tissues of the old tan tail pipe.
Do you suppose if I was actually to visit runnersworld.com they would have a remedy for profuse bleeding of the ring meat??

RE Graves Disease: both HW and his wife developed it while he was in office and it doesn't affect your looks that much, just temporary hair issues and the potential "fish eye" syndrome which I don't think either of them has. It does make it harder to maintain your weight after treatment but it's not impossible. I happened to get it during the same time frame they did and went through the same iodine treatment.

I wonder if Barry wrote about those big ass Hawaiian cane spiders, or the deadly poisonous centipedes with bodies the size of pencils (legs are extra)...
Hawaiian centipedes get bigger than that. I remember seeing lots of them as a kid, bodies about the width of your thumb, up to a foot long. Nasty things, caused lots of nightmares in my youth.
That's an idea. Hit up JugEars about Hawaiian creepy-crawlies. If he doesn't remember centipedes, cane spiders, wharf rats, aggressively carnivorous roaches, mynah birds, mongoose or geckos.....I'd call bullshit on his Hawaiian roots.

So I replied that I wished I was as stupid as Sarah Palin who reportedly made approx. $12 million last year. Spoken by two women who have husbands who have been laid off for over 2 years, course that all happened under "George W. Bush's watch" so he's to blame.
I just get depressed by how stupid so many people are and uneducated on the issues.

Say "hi" to Teh Palin for me! I think she's risking her life in front of that crowd, though. I think there'll be a ton of deranged moonbat infiltrators there. I'm going to the Richmond Tea Party on Thursday and wonder what we'll have in the way of whack jobs. When I was out protesting Warner and Webb's offices this past fall there were some really hateful 20-somethings making nasty remarks to our Patriot group. I don't know if they'll have enough gumption to be there, though. Charles Payne from FBN is coming.
We've been doing the "Walk for Life" in October for over 15 years so we've seen some NASTY counterprotesting. One of my daughter's won't be coming because she's afraid of the potential ugliness. And the fact that she thinks we might get arrested and sent to re-education camps!

Douchebag alert! I found this guy's blog while googling for pictures of the Yellowstone magma chamber.
Right at the top center of the blog: "About Me" Followed by: "40's something modern explorer, dad, husband, businessman, and intellectual vagabond searching for connections at the chaotic confluence of science & art, life, ideas & adventure"
(Emphasis mine.) Douchebag! Douchebag! His blog has been around about three years it looks like, and has had 700 profile views!
Here's a sample of his writing. From the latest entry:
James Krenov, who just passed away in October (2009), taught an entire generation of woodworkers to converse with wood; to listen and respond with a thoughtful approach; the dialog informing the very shape and feel of a thing. Design is a tricky thing, but through such a conversation we can at least arrive at a semblance of design quality. We can follow the threads which challenge our notions and preconceptions and thus raise the tenor of the look and feel of a piece beyond that which typically lies within us. Often those ideas raise our skills pushing us to explore new methods and new approaches.
I gotta go talk to my wood.

spiders (non venomous) in my house don't bother me. anything that flies means all out war.
Heh! We had a bat in our house once. I was watching tv and saw something fly by out of the corner of my eye. I thought, "wow, that's a big moth", then I realized it was a fricking bat. I locked myself in my craft room and yelled for my husband (who was downstairs). I told him about the bat and told him to get rid of it. He didn't know what to do. He ended up bludgeoning it to death with my brand new Swiffer Sweeper. We called our county animal control to see how to dispose of said bat and see if we needed to take it somewhere to be tested for rabies. They told us it was illegal to kill a bat (it was the fall, mating season and they are a protected species--who knew?) They told us to just throw it in the trash.

I personally think that's a bunch of crap. I have asked plenty of guys out and had it turn into a semi-serious thing (only reason it didn't get serious is because I decided I didn't like them enough). I stalked Mortis on facebook to meet him (not really stalking, but you know what I mean). I think most guys appreciate it when a woman can be forward enough to ask them out.

"My existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves lives. You don't want the truth because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that wall, you need me on that wall. We use words like honor, code, loyalty. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said thank you, and went on your way."

Negative polls in his "home state" would sink him - course we are dealing with the stupid party.

It becomes harder for the guy to ask out a girl if he's been spending time with her. Because if he's rejected, now he has the possibility of losing the friendship he has with her. Better to be satisfied with what he has, he figures...
If it's going to happen, she should go for it, and if rejected, there really isn't much to lose. Girls can rely on the guy being a gentleman, whereas guys don't know... is he going to get rejected by some girl who will try to embarrass him? Or distance herself from him? No one counts on her being a gentleman. She won't be considered an asshole no matter what she does.
If PGiS has been spending time with this guy (I didn't realize this), then even more so, I say she should ask him out.
PGiS, you definitely need to be the one to ask him out. You've been spending time with him; I bet he says yes. I sincerely do.

We were both invited to an event by a mutual friend who had the intent of us meeting each other.
She and I exchanged phone numbers after having fun talking for a couple of hours.
I went home, tossed the number on my nightstand and said "she's probably not interested and won't call and I won't risk it".
A couple weeks later she calls.
That was Feb 1993. We've been together ever since.

Went to RedState to find out what y'all were talking about and can't believe what I'm reading.
I've lost count of the number of times Erickson posts something incredibly venal and stupid and then has to follow it up a few hours later, after his own perplexed readers ask him what the fuck is wrong with him with, with another post explaining and reinforcing his nose-in-the-air, conservative-activism-isn't-legitimate-until-I-say-it-is shitheadedness, one designed to sniff that all the people left over after his latest round of bannings have "reading comprehension" issues and just don't understand his strategic brilliance. He does it every time he throws a candidate under the bus because they're not Rand Paul; he did it with his drama-queen "birfer-banning" weekend epic; and he did it after calling the entire GOP racist because Kay Bailey Hutchison wouldn't step down to let Michael Williams run. But oh, mama does he love drawing in those GOP congressmen as guest bloggers and does he ever love telling everyone who'll listen how great it is being a CNN tool commentator.
Erick Erickson is a jealous, condescending, race-baiting, bloated opportunistic sell-out cockblob of the lowest order. I wouldn't piss on this fat-faced self-infatuated fucking asshole son of a bitch to put him out if he were on fire.

rum, I think all the Moronettes get "guy" humor and aren't prissy. That's what makes 'em fun. Way back before electricity (maybe not that far), when I used to date, I had a couple guys say, "You'd be fun to be married to." I took that as a great compliment and can easily see all our wimminz commenters as fun ppls for Moron types to be married to. The Morons don't seem too bad either. Heh, heh.

The trick here, given that Hawaii is very liberal, is to get Hawaii to reject Obama by the 2010 elections - dismiss him as typical "Fookin Haole Mainlander"* - not Kama'aina.
Negative polls in his "home state" would sink him - course we are dealing with the stupid party.

Ooh, I think Editor, has a Droid. It looked really cool at the Seattle Moron Meet-up. I believe he liked it a lot. Outside Magazine (March issue, p. 90) recently reviewed/rated it as the best smartphone, has better remote range than the IPhone.
Here's the review:
"$300 with contract. Has the processing power and razor-sharp touchscreen for true Web use--and in far more remote areas on Verizon's network than the city-bound iPhone on AT&T. You can scroll fluidly thru maps, zoom in on hi-res satellite images, and breeze thru complex websites. The keypad is flat and typoprone, but the brilliant 3.7 inch display more than makes up for it."

wasn't open to civilians - no such thing - military positions are not recruited for via OPM. Perhaps it was 'promotion/internal' only.
The key is most of these jobs are 'screened' with software which looks for certain buzzwords - HR filters out the false positives, nothing puts back in the false negatives.
Aside from job related jargon load down your resume with AA terms. Asian may not help, but "women's studies" does, send in twenty bucks to every ethnic front group in your home town and put it on the resume as 'memberships'.
Most of the world was under the 'Spanish Empire' at one time (wiki can be your friend).
If you think you are qualified for a job series, rewrite your resume (in the past tense) to reflect buzzwords shown on a sample of the job descriptions for that job series.

My parents house in NH isn't allowed to have one because the house is too rural for a mail route. In my case it is because the post office is so close that they decided that everyone in this rural area can walk to the small post office to get their mail at their free PO Box. The one woman who works in the post office does to door to door delivery for the elderly people though.
I have no problem with the government saving money by making people in rural areas go to the post office to get their mail. I actually think it's a good idea to have a small rural post office rather than wasting money sending a mail man driving through the entire area. My only problem is that the same government won't mail things to me because I don't have a street address mail box.
Alright, I'm off to bed for real now. Good night everyone.

Black widow spiders are pretty common, all over the country.
Brown recluse spiders are very rare. Usually it's an "Aggressive House Spider," not a Brown recluse.
"House scorpions" are more common, across more of the country, than you would expect. So I've been told, though I've only ever seen one . . . in the basement of a house in the temperate rain forest of the Oregon Cascades, of all places.
"House centipedes" are also common. You are more likely to see one of those than any of the aforementioned critters, but be reassured . . . they are the coolest, the least creepy, of them all. And while they are predators, they are not equipped to do harm to anything but other bugs.
That's all I got, entomologically speaking. Another tot of slivovitz, and I'm off to bed. G'night, M&Ms.

Seriously
We are talking about an automated resume screening system which looks for certain buzzwords (which may not appear in the actual job announcement - hence the sample of related job series). Without hitting the required buzzwords the applicant is rejected. Hit those buzzwords you get your score.. an actual human being in HR might add on the points for veteran status and a short list is generated.
This is a .gov job - the census should show you what they are asking for - say you met the automated screening, made the first cut, then say during the (telephone) interview that you are (i.e.: imply) a handicapped lesbian hispanic asian with native american and some other not-european roots - BANG - they got SIX AA points for that little twelve person office.
One SIX point piece of AA overhead goes a long ways in hiring the people that does the work that .gov actually does. Yeah, anecdotal, I heard a GS-14 bragging about having one three pointer... they do keep count - just like the census. That is revolting, but it is done.
One SIX point piece of AA overhead that actually performs will go a long way - like THREE points will get you the White House.

I believe the PresidentÂ’s children have a better chance of escaping the Secret Service detail then the President does. And even then it is pretty tough. I mean come on, itÂ’s not like the White House is some unprotected suburban dwelling you can walk in and out of.

Hmm, good question. I'm inclined to think no because their #1 duty is to protect him no matter what he wants. Karl Rove talked about that in his book re Bush after 9/11. Bush wanted to go back to DC but the SS were adamant about diverting AF1 somewhere safe and they got their way.

I doubt it. I suspect, though I have no direct knowledge of how this works, there is likely one or two "top" agents in charge of a "shift." I think that no matter who say what or who orders who to stay behind, that top fella would refuse to be very far away. As I understand it, the Secret Service folks take that very seriously and very impersonally.

I'd like to believe he wouldn't or couldn't, but he's done so many things I never thought were possible that he might. But I would hope he doesn't. Those individuals take their commitment to protect his life very seriously.
Though I do wonder, if
the President ordered the Secret Service to stay behind if theyÂ’d have

Wouldn't that be a violation of some oath or code, since it's their job to protect him? Besides, those kinds of scenarios always seem to end badly.

HR/OPM is centralized, dumb, lazy, (typical libs) and got sales pitch on some crap AI software to screen applications to make their jobs easier (typical libs).
In all fairness, HR/OPM does not have the capabilities to screen resumes from 300+ milliuon potential applicants forevery job, so they bought the crap AI software. All the software does is look for buzzwords. So if you find a job series which meets your skills/interest then do a broad search for all jobs in that series and incorporate those buzzwords into your resume.
The software filters and rates according to those buzzwords as selected by the hiring authority and these may not appear in the job announcement. For example, the job may be an anthropologist in NV, the job description may be be generic, but key buzzwords might be 'Hopi' or 'Navajo' which NEVER appear in the job announcement.
Somehow this AI software grades one's resume and scores it from 0 to 100.
Veterans get 0, 5, or 10 points added. It is illegal to pass over those with 5 or 10 points. If the list with 5 or 10 point veterans is 'undesirable' the job is canceled... to be re-announced later... all nice and legal like in case you wonder why the same job keeps getting posted...
Having get to certain AA standards, not quotas, but standards... Oh, and performance evaluation criteria for the GS-15+. Performance evaluation, as in performance based pay bonuses. So, yeah, the .gov gives bonuses for hiring minorities, homos, handicaps, and general weirdos. Not that if you are a SES or GS-15 you give a shit if a GS-05 does a damn thing... but you do get an extra few extra $k in your pocket by making sure your subordinates hire them...
So, if you qualify, like student grants, get them.
If you are really qualified you will go up...
if you are not, you will still go up, maybe even to POTUS!11!!

Have you seen her? Celibacy (actually, chastity - celibacy is "no marriage," not "no sex") might not be voluntary in her case.

Hugo was fun back in 88 or 89. Seeing the chunks of trees impaled in stuff was kinda cool.
They still need to have Hurricane Adolf, though, or maybe Skip. Hurricane Skip wouldn't be too bad. Sounds kind of mellow.

I hate rewarding them with a link, but it's the only way to get the full experience. Not only is the article just plain silly (full of bizarre logic problems and all too accepting of fatuous premises--beyond the obvious one), but you get the bonus of the comments! Full-on stupid, fast as the speed of, well, stupid.
Over here at AoSHQ we play at comments because at heart, we all are afraid we'll wake up some day with a serious mental deficiency, and begin take our own bullshit as seriously as do the fine folks at this "Ongoing review of politics and culture."
One day we should all drop by and play with them awhile.
Ahh, culture. It's what's for breakfast.
Posted by: K~Bob at April 13, 2010 11:39 PM (9b6FB)
AoSHQ allows commenters to select their own screen names. The use of humorous or ironic names, or monikers taken from dead celebrities, former government officials, and the like, is an integral part of the culture of AoSHQ. Recurring confrontations between "Alexander Hamilton" and "Aaron Burr", who, despite their deaths nearly two centuries ago, have failed to reconcile on matters of national policy, remain a staple, as does random visits from former president "Thomas Jefferson" who generally drops by to clarify and amplify upon his published and unpublished opinions.
Also noticed that someone updated it to include well-deserved jabs @ Chuckles.

I was thinking that, too. I want to know what she looks like dressed as a normal person. According to the news, she stays celibate--and that's the word they used, not chaste--because of the increase in HIV/AIDS in women.

Hurricanes, eh? I've lived through several. I When I was a kid (in Florida) , you didn't evacuate, you hunkered down. Of course, you're supposed to build stuff that takes 120mph winds into account.

I keep hoping for Geraldo to get knocked over by a tree trunk, crushed by a Subaru, or sliced in half by a flying street sign during one of his hurricane coverage stunts. Does that make me a bad person?

That would definitely be bad in event of a hurricane. Beautiful view, though, I must say.

No, that's Loews Coronado Beach Resort.
The Del is further down the strand.
I have pictures of that from Christmas Eve. It's kind of a family tradition that we eat Christmas Eve dinner there with the family.

I'd blow up all entrances into the Valley from the Westside and Downtown. After too many years of taking our tax money and screwing us over, they're not worthy to take refuge within the Valley. (Morons will be allowed in with verification.)

Thanks!
Last year a did a CD picture album that I uploaded for a fried that wanted to walk on my beach whenever she was stressed at work so I did one up and sent it to her to watch on-line every time she was stressed.
It was sort of a photography experiment for me where I paced the picks and did the transition timing so the walk would take as long as it really would if she was actually doing it.
I'll dig up the link incase anyone wants to see it. Set to '80s music.

Besides, in all actuality, the assignment is more about applying high school reform than about the author's views. In answering the questions put forward by a few of my classmates, I can see they bought it wholesale. Wish they wouldn't.

See, that's funny right there, (and ironic) since Sebelius used to be insurance commissioner before she became governor of Kansas.

Is it a case of students these days just regurgitating whatever is in the book, or do they buy whatever it says hook line and sinker with no critical thought? From what I recall of college a couple decades ago, a lot of stuff sounds good to people with zero experience outside a campus to measure it against. And that included some of the profs, unfortunately.

I'm glad this is the last section of postings, b/c those things always annoy me & it's difficult to take them seriously. The instructor actually doesn't teach; they give us this bk to read, then they shove all age levels into one rm & we talk about whoever is important that day. So, the middle school ed people get to do our thing, & we do their thing.
But it's highly ironic that a bk about school reform & teachers asking probing questions is being pushed by a prof who is hardly seen & who never asks us about the bk except to "engage" with one another on a campus web forum. I know part of it is a $$$ issue, b/c she has to go watch the student teachers teach & give them pointers, but this could be done better. I feel bad for all the undergrads in this course.

Mrs. North and I just put the kids on the school bus. She's in the shower right now, washing her breasts.
We're going to Washington, DC today.
I have a list of 66 moron Congressweasels, cross-referenced with their caucus (in the case of the Blue Pigs) and their relevant committee assignments.
My message is simple:
NO to the VAT,
NO to AMNESTY,
REPEAL, don't REPLACE, healthcare,
and in the case of the Senators
NO to CAP and TRADE.
We're watching you and waiting. We may never in my life vote for someone who believes as you do, but we're eagerly awaiting your votes, in order to see who we should be sending money to defeat, who we should be phone banking against, etc., etc.
I carry with me, I hope, your blessings.

That big-ass snake was a blue indigo, just for the record. Called a coachwhip down in Tejas. Water moccasin is Akistradon Locastoma in sciencey talk but I just like to say it cause it sounds cool. They are always ready to fight.
We used to go to the Davis Mountains in West Texas and catch snakes for profit. The Trans Pecos sub-species sell for big money to collectors.
Yeah, I know...who cares? Ya'll are all asleep.
