Overnight Open Thread - Boring Tuesday Version
— Maetenloch

Good evening all M&Ms.

Scientists: Everybody's a Little Neanderthal

So after sequencing most of the Neanderthal DNA, scientists now say that most people of European or Asian descent have 1 to 4% of Neanderthal genes in their DNA. Interestingly Sub-Saharan Africans don't since the Neanderthals only lived outside Africa. So apparently in between killing and driving off Neanderthal tribes, early humans were also getting jiggy with them. Which seems about par for human nature.

Of course having 1-4% of their genes is just an average, some people have more, a lot more. Such as your humble ONT narrator. With my natural hirsuteness, gorilla-like physique, y-5 molars, prehensile feet, indifference to cold, and deep love of fire, meat, pointy sticks, and rocks, I'm just a hop, skip and a few codons away from being a Neanderthal missing link. And I'm okay with that, having long since come to terms with my innate cave-manhood.

Neanderthal_pose.jpg

Luckily thanks to modern shaving technology and orthodontics I'm able to pass among humans with nary a strange look. At worst, thanks to Geico, people just assume I'm part of some kind of insurance event. And yes your modern world and magic talking boxes sometimes do scare and confuse me, but I do know one thing and that's that we cavemen are people too (mostly) and we also need love. So human ladies don't be shy - grab your spirit water beverages and let me show you around my newly refurbished love cave. It has authentic stone floors and gets HBO, Lifetime, and the Home Shopping Network.
North Korea Giving Up On Its 5/7 War Plan
For years North Korea's main war strategy was to overrun SK and US forces and take the entire peninsula within 5 to 7 days before American reinforcements could arrive. But after watching recent US air campaigns and noting their use of precision guided munitions, North Korea seems to have now given up on the plan. It's replacement seems to be a quick capture of Seoul followed by negotiations and a renewed offensive. Of course the ROK forces today are well trained and armed, so it's doubtful if NK could even take Seoul. But they probably could destroy it with artillery.

Mojave Cross Stolen - I'm Bummed
So just days after the Supreme Court ruled that the cross could remain on federal land, someone has stolen it. I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that it wasn't scrap metal scavenging mutants. I'm actually very familiar with this particular cross and used to regularly camp about 200 yards away from it. It's way out in the middle of nowhere in the middle of the Mojave Nature Preserve mounted on top of a rocky hill. I actually discovered it by chance back around 1991 while exploring back roads in the desert.

It was a great camping location because there was almost no traffic on the nearest road and there was a natural rock overhang and fire pit. Plus the scenery is beautiful with a forest of Joshua trees as far as you can see. It was kind of secret so pretty much only locals and a few other people even knew about it. And at that time it was on BLM land so you could shoot and hunt around there as well. Anyway I used to go out to it at least once a year and once spent the coldest Easter morning of my life there. Sometimes the cross would get vandalized but it was always fixed by my next visit. Oh well I guess with all the publicity my secret site is no longer. sigh.

Evening, M&M's - I'm starting to feel like one of those folks on the show "Hoarders".  We still haven't found a place for all of the stuff that I am storing at our house that belonged to my sister (passed away 12/0 to pass along to her son whenever he gets a place of his own (he's currently in college).  And no, I can't put it in a storage facility, because it's stuff that cannot be replaced....

Then we still have all of Daughter #1's stuff from when she left for college - and she's coming home for good in a couple of weeks after graduation, but she'll be in an apartment with 2 other girls for at least a year.....

Then Daughter #2 will be coming home for the summer with all of the stuff that she took with her off to college - and we still have all of HER stuff boxed up until she graduates......

And today my Dad came into town for a visit, and he brought several boxes of stuff that he and my mom don't need anymore, and "Where would you like me to put these boxes?".....

Ah, well, I suppose one of these days the house will be clear of all of these boxes and clutter; in the meantime, I'm trying to figure out how to make pathways for us to walk in to get from one place to the other!

Just needed to gripe about this tonight.....

42 PGiS, I've been thinking it over and I've realized I'm much more conflicted on your son's possession of those "Calvin and Hobbes" books than conservative/libertarian orthodoxy would urge. When you come right down to it, that "complete collection" set is frigging heavy and the poor kid might strain something trying to pick it up.

Now, I don't have kids but I have friends who do, and NONE of them allow their kids to have books of comic-strip collections any heavier than your average "Archie 'N Pals" digest. It's just good sense. And now here comes Andrews & McMeel with this gifuckingantic "Calvin and Hobbes" set the size and weight of Rhode Island! They're marketing this heavy, dangerous cartoon book full of glossy full-color pages to KIDS! How the hell does giving a corporation this kind of prioritization help us in November?

So, today I called my congressman and asked him to push legislation that would allow the federal government to control the marketing of comic-strip reprint books. Shut down those bulky, hazardous "Complete Bloom County" reprints and steer the kids toward healthier comics choices, like maybe those slim little volumes of "Doonesbury" strips. I figure that by prioritizing our liberty over the liberty of the big publishing houses, we can save your son a dislocated shoulder, make life around the house a little easier for you, clean up in the congressional races this fall, and basically all be better people. You can thank me later.

Just got back from a vacation to Washington DC.  The highlight of my trip was when we were touring the capital building, I was at the end of the line while we were passing the "Speaker of the House's Chambers".  I let loose a category 5, rotunda clearing silent but violent fart.  There was a security guard trailing our group about 40 feet behind us, as he got in front of the chamber door I heard from a distance "Jeeeeeeeezus".

Hey, here's a thought, we wish to offer you a replacement -- a statue of your President, the "Great Epancipator", as a young child.

See this works out perfectly. You get to fill the space once occupied by a hallowed memorial, and we get to dump this piece of crap, um, er, offer you a magnificent work of art in a gesture of solidarity.

Easy peasy!  So give us a call as to when and where we can drop it off.

Just let us know. Anytime is good for us.

CDR M - I don't think I've EVER seen silverfish in this part of Texas; some of the stuff out in the garage is in plastic bins, though.  Thanks for the tip!

Mr. "Carlin" - you owe me a new keyboard......  Actually, our house is plenty big - 2500 sq. ft. - we just never knew that we were going to be the recipients of all of this stuff all at once!

When my sister died - and for some reason the program substituted a smiley icon for '08 in my last post - my parents took care of going through all of her stuff.  They don't want me to have to do that when they pass on (I'm the only child left), so they are paring down their stuff now.  While I appreciate the gesture, I still haven't had time to find a place for all of my sister's stuff, and I am just now getting back to "normal" after her unexpected passing (I had to postpone my grief in order to make sure that my parents and my nephew were OK.....).

As I said, I just needed to vent - the hubs doesn't like all of this clutter, and I'm not overly fond of it myself.....

80 Was able to watch TV live tonight, which is always fun-- except I forgot about commercials. Anyway, tonight's NCIS was predictable (4yrs in the making) but with a tear-jerking finish. Love when an actor says nothing (verbally) but manages to say everything.

Also have been graced with doing jury duty tomorrow. Up by 5:45 to get downtown by 8am. Hope they eliminate me quickly. Perhaps I should yawn often...

Looks like a fight over territory.  They're pushing against each other shoulder to shoulder - and since neither is budging much, they switch to head-butting for a few exchanges before going back to the shoving match.

Lions don't bother giraffes much because giraffes have double-jointed front legs and can kick forward as well as backward.  The head-butting is not nearly as lethal as a kick from one of those hooves.

Just cuz something turns on SOME men, doesn't mean it turns on all, or most, men.  There are dudes who want to see a chick in high heels stomp on another dude's man parts, for example.  Very few men want to see that.  Some of this crap has a very tiny, but apparently lucrative, niche market.

I once tried to think of a form of porn that could be created to address such a niche, since making porn probably beats working for a living.  But then I realized that it was futile.  No matter what you can think of, someone is already doing it, or it's something that no one should ever do.

165 Miss80sBaby - just do what the old codger who taught one of my Engineering Design courses did whenever he was called up for jury duty.  When they would ask him if he thought he could render a fair judgment, he would just tell them that as far as he was concerned, if they had the person in court on trial, he automatically assumed that person was guilty.

Funny.  I have been called to jury duty 3 times.  They judge always goes through the pool and asks each juror to tell where your live and what you do for a living (amongst other things).  I always get eliminated immediately after I tell them I am an engineer.  I'm pretty sure both sides want a jury full of retards.

I made no such assertion.  Scientists have made various statements in that past that have been proven false or only partially true later.  In most fields of study this is not a huge deal - we learn what was wrong, adapt, and move on.  Human culture is largely unaffected.  But any time there is a link, whether real or merely "likely," between humans and lower forms of life, it is immediately trumpeted as an important new bit of concrete knowledge, and gets special emphasis, and when such assertions are later disproven they are never mentioned in media again.  The purpose behind this special attention is to create the idea in the average person's mind that man is, essentially, an animal.  It is not meant to enlighten us - it is meant only to dehumanize us.

I do believe that man is a specially created being.  However, I am not a 7-days literalist.  Perhaps we were made from an existing pattern that needed upgrading.  It may very well be that we're adapted from some other thing, or that our ancestors somehow interbred with it while maintaining their humanity.  But whatever the case may be - emphasizing a link to lower creatures has a social/political purpose that goes well beyond mere scientific curiosity.

I've heard of that.  Something similar happened in a school district close by where I live.  Thankfully not the one I pay taxes for...  There was a school dance and some couples were screwing right there in the gym.  Happily, they were actually disciplined.  However, the fact that they were willing to shamelessly do that in front of a crowd disturbs me.  When I was a young person the back seat of a large car, hidden away in the service lanes of a corn field, was the proper place for such things.  And you prayed the cops didn't happen by.

No, you just LET THEM GO FREE.

The pirates captured by Russian special forces after they seized and oil tanker have been released because Russia does not want to have to pay to feed them in prison.

Authorities initially said the pirates would be brought to Russia to face criminal charges after hijacking a Russian oil tanker. But Defence Ministry spokesman Col Alexei Kuznetsov said that the pirates had instead been released.

The Law of the Seas Convention, to which Russia is a signatory, says that the courts of a country that seizes a pirated vessel on the high seas has the right to decide what penalties are to be imposed. However, some countries are wary of hauling in pirates for trial for fear of being saddled with them after they serve prison terms.

The only ones I liked, besides the Corn Pops were Cookie Crisp and Cap'n Crunch. I hate super sweet sugary cereals. I don't have a sweet tooth so I don't like things super sweet.

Boy goes back to his buddy who asks what did you find out?  Boy 1 pulls douwn his fly and holding his joint and says, "This is a penis and if it was 2" shorter it would be perfect."

Anyone have a joke?

Posted by: Who Knows at May 11, 2010 11:14 PM (7FgWm)

Sure.

So it's 1845 and a ship is coming over to America from Europe, and down in steerage are a bunch of Irishmen fleeing the potato famine and an entire village of Polish Jews fleeing the Tsar's Cossacks.  In the middle of the Atlantic, a giant octopus -- we're talking Ray Harryhausen style here -- comes up from the deep, grabs the ship and starts shaking it.

The timbers strain and start to crack.  Suddenly the Captain shouts down to his crew, "THROW EIGHT OF THE JEWS OVERBOARD!"

The crewmen grab eight of the villagers and toss them over the side.  Sure enough, the octopus grabs up one in each arm and slinks back down into the inky depths.

The Rabbi of the villagers runs up to the Captain and says, "Sir, I have to protest!  I understand you did what you did to save the ship, but why did it have to be my people?  Couldn't you have thrown over maybe four of us and four of the Irishmen?"

The Captain looks at the Rabbi, laughs and shakes his head.

And he says, "Silly Rabbi!  Micks are for squids!"

Brace yourselves ladies.

A gal goes to the gynecologist.  She jumps up in that position you all hate and the Doctor gets in position.  The guy is an idiot who has the habit of blurting out his thoughts.  The first thing he says is, "My God, that's the biggest vagina I'me ever seen."  The woman is mortified and gets out of the office as quickly as possible.

Arriving at home she is still upset but is curious.  She goes into the bedroom, takes off her cloths and squats over a mirror to assess the situation.  About that time her hubby walks in and says, "What are you doing?"  She replies," I'm uh, exercising."  He says okay but be careful you don't fall in that big hole.

A pastor, a doctor and an engineer were waiting one morning for a particularly slow group of golfers.

The engineer fumed, "What's with these guys? We must have been waiting for 15 minutes!"

The doctor chimed in, "I don't know, but I've never seen such ineptitude! "

The pastor said, "Hey, here comes the greens keeper. Let's have a word with him. Hi George, say, what's with that group ahead of us? They're rather slow, aren't they?"

The greens keeper replied, "Oh, yes, that's a group of blind firefighters. They lost their sight saving our clubhouse from a fire last year, so we always let them play for free anytime."

The group was silent for a moment. The pastor said, "That's so sad. I think I will say a special prayer for them tonight."

The doctor said, "Good idea. And I'm going to contact my ophthalmologist buddy and see if there's anything he can do for them."

The engineer said, "Why can't these guys play at night?"

A ship sinks off a deserted island in the Pacific, and the only survivors are a physicist, an engineer and a mathematician.  Happily, they discover that the flotsam they were clinging to was cases of canned beans.  There's a little fresh water on the island, so they figure they'll be okay until rescue arrives.

The mathematician says, "I'm starving.  Let's break out some of those beans."

The physicist says, "Well, okay.  I can make a fire using my eyeglasses, and if we put the can of beans on it, the steam pressure building up inside will make it burst."

The engineer says, "Yes, but the losses will be pretty high.  I can use some of this coral rock to make a chimney to hold the can and constrain its bursting.  We can anticipate that the beans at the bottom will crust up and so the can will burst at the top, shooting the beans at a predictable trajectory.  We can set out clean leaves to catch them."

The mathematician says, "What is this bullshit?  First, part of the beans will burn in the can - I hate burnt beans.  Then, there's bound to be sand on the leaves - I hate sand in my beans.  And third, all this dicking around is going to take hours - I'm hungry NOW."

Exasperated, the physicist and the engineer simultaneously ask the mathematician, "So what do YOU suggest we do?"

"Easy," the mathematician replies, "we assume a can opener."

I was there the first week of March and the Wynn has more top tier restaurants than you can count. We walked over to the Venetian/Pallazzo one night and ate at Sushisamba. The teacher asked her students to make rhyming verses of two lines each.  Then she went around the room having each kid read their creation.  Little Johnny rose and read his:  "Mary Jane McKane of Boston, Mass.    Went into the water up to her ankle."

"Why, that doesn't rhyme at all," said the Teacher.

"It will," said little Johnny, "when the tide comes in."

451 In school, the teacher asks the class to use the word "beautiful" twice in one sentence.

She first calls on Mary, who recites "I saw beautiful flowers on a beautiful day"

Then she calls on Kathy, who recites "I heard a beautiful woman singing a beautiful song"

Very good, the teacher says. But she cringes because Little Johnny is next. She sighs and says "OK, Johnny, your turn. What is your example?

Little Johnny pauses a long time, then says he can only think of one example.

The teacher asks, "what is your example, Johnny?"

Little Johnny says "well, when my mom told my dad she was pregnant again, all dad could says was 'beautiful, fuckin' beautiful!"

Sassy... Vegas was seriously hurting when I was there a couple of months ago and I can't imagine that it's improved much since then. At that time, even the Wynn was offering great deals including drastically reduced room rates and credits in the casino.

Start negotiating. Also consider Encore, which is also on-site. Or, try next door at the Venetian. It's only a walkway from the Wynn and you never have to go out on the street.

Whatever you do, do not visit "The Drugstore" at the Wynn. They must spew crack into the in ductwork there because I walked into what I thought was a drugstore and dropped more than $300 before I walked out. (I love my Penhaligon's)

It's a trick.

Just walk right on by.

I can recommend a bit of sanity from the high prices at the Wynn by suggesting you take the walkway across the street to the little mall there. You can grab a starbucks and there's a Bloomies and a Belk and (I think) a Lord & Taylor. Unless you've been to the Wynn before, you might suffer a bout of insanity whilst walking through shopper's row there: Chanel, Alexander McQueen, Cartier, Vuitton, oh...and a Ferrari dealership.

It's insanity.

It doesn't have to be a lot of exercise, but you have to make sure you're burning the calories you take in, and you have to burn more calories than you take in to lose weight. In your case, you adjusted your caloric intake to be less than it took to run your body.

And you didn't gain weight when your exercised, you gained muscle mass.

516 Consuming fewer than 1500 calories a day will definitely do the trick. As to exercising, I might have been gaining muscle but I was getting way fat by gorging on food after those intense workouts. They were bootcamp workouts twice a week combined with pilates twice a week and you would have thought I would have been in the best of shape - but no, I looked like a fatass. Now I take jazz, tap and ballet - no workouts whatsoever, and just consume up to 1500 calories a day and I'm back to my size 4. Sadly, the bust has remained the same. That refuses to get smaller.

517 Totally agree.  Exercise is a tiny part of weight loss.

Perhaps, but it is a significant part.

Exercise helps your cells burn fuel more efficiently. In fact, many diabetics can control diabetes through diet and exercise alone.

It's like this. Maintaining your car is more than just pouring fuel into it. You keep tuned and have it checked regularly to maximze performance. Same thing with your body.

It sneaks up on you and can be brutal but I was always really active until I got sick. So, back to the gym for me. The first two weeks are always hell, but after that it just feels so gooood.

524 Consuming fewer than 1500 calories a day will definitely do the trick.

Everyone's metabolism is different. You've obviously found the best solution for you. But I wouldn't discount the exercise portion, even if it's minimal.

526 Actually, the worst part about getting out of LAX is if you are renting a car... you take a shuttle to an offsite location, and it drops you right out into the hood with terrible signage... really poor.

After my last experience with LAX I'm never flying in or out of there again. John Wayne Airport all the way, and I don't mind the drive.

And you didn't gain weight when your exercised, you gained muscle mass.

Yes. And some women build muscle more quickly than they drop fat but that usually only lasts a few short weeks and then the balance occurs. And, muscle mass will speed up the consumption of calories.

I think when people think of exercise they think they have to kill themselves but it has been shown time and time again that interval exercising of only a few short minutes at a time does the trick. No more is it necessary to wreck your body for 30 minutes straight.

Mystry is confusing Findlay with Toledo.  And don't pick on Ohio Dan, he's over 200 miles away, on the Ohio River (that's called the Apocalypse Now fallacy).

What do you like? Obviously there are some highly sophisticated persons above, who need a lot of stimulation. At Findlay you'd be minutes from the 25,000-person campus at Bowling Green and maybe a half-hour from Ohio Northern. Lots of very good free classical music, good jazz in concert but not in the clubs. Cutting edge music and a good blues bar at BG, but it is a college town in the modern sense now. I would not live in BG because of that, but would visit the campus and Main/Wooster. They have curling there. Findlay has a college university!, a nice one; there are two at Tiffin, and OSU branches at Lima. On a dare you could drive an hour to Toledo for their orchestra and museum, both among the top 10 in the country, not bad for a shithole, see above.

There is a Zagat-rated restaurant in Findlay, and a handful of other decent places, but if you eat out a lot you will need to develop a taste for country inns and bar & grills, of which there are plenty.  Try the corner of US6 and SR 199; they grow their own beef and have a graduate chef. Findlay has a municipal indoor ice skating rink that draws about 800 high school kids on open skate nights. Corny as hell unless you like to skate. Nice tennis club on the west side.

Sprint car racing (real ones) every Fri and Sat at Fremont and Attica. Findlay's old track runs a feature now and then, and may re-open. Norwalk for drags. About 90 minutes to Mid-Ohio. Half a dozen golf courses within a half-hour, couple of them decent.

The string of towns along the western border around Delphos and Fort Jennings, all within an hour's drive, are lovely, well-kept places that look like somebody's train set models. "Boring" towns with very pleasant people in them and beautiful churches. Hunting, fishing and boating are some of the best in the country. There are not a lot of curvy backroads, but the scenery is good for a drive. Yes, it is flat, so you will get good mileage. Cross-country skiing is great but you're 3 hours from the Michigan slopes, two from the sled run at Angola IN. There are designated bicycle routes on some rural roads. Lots of people have horses; you don't see them out on the roads much, but it can be done.

Findlay has a flood hazard area. Don't move into that part of town. It floods.

Hard to make recommendations without knowing what you think good living is.

Yeah, I think that's the problem. A nice 20 minute walk every evening is enough to do the trick, as long as you're not loading up the calories. Swimming is excellent exercise, too.

Rep. Alan Mollohan loses Dem primary in West Virginia. http://bit.ly/9H7rxN

Rep. Alan B. Mollohan (D-W.Va.) lost his bid for a 15th term Tuesday in a primary defeat that further affirms the anti-incumbent sentiment coursing through the country.

He is the first House member to lose a reelection bid in the 2010 campaign.

Mollohan hadn't faced a serious primary fight in more than a decade and was seen in some circles as unbeatable, given that the state's 1st Congressional District seat had been in his family since 1968. (His father held it for seven terms before he won it.)

@595  Apparently I missed my calling.

Once in a fit of idealism I undertook apprenticeship as a motor cycle mechanic. In those days I thought motor cycles were beautiful things. After about a year, I complained to the boss that we never saw the beautiful customs and strange exotics that our best customers owned; they took care of them at home, and all we got was battered rags and "tune-ups" that needed an overhaul.

He answered, "You oughta talk to my wife's gynecologist."

I learned a lot at that job.

616 Deborah @35, I can relate.

We have the stuff inherited from my mother - good furniture, that doesn't fit in my house or with my style as well as the less-good furniture (left over from my childhood, before she got the better furniture) plus a few things we bought.  This house of furniture is currently filling the garage, waiting for my girls to need it (one has already taken a fair amount of it, when she got married; yet somehow there is some of her own stuff still here).

Along with all the stuff of both daughters, neither of whom lives here anymore.  That stuff helps fill the garage, along with filling the last one's room after she departed.

There should be a name for this stage of life - when you end up holding everything for everybody!  But I'm not clever enough to come up with it.  Maybe the U-Store-It Stage or something.

I'll just be glad when we get out of this stage, whatever it could be called!

Didn't say that,

Trying to say, apparently ineffectively, that they didn't have a HIGH protein diet. Hence, hunters AND gathers. Also, they had to chase down the meat they did get to eat, so intensive exercise as well.

678 You know what, I read that the study which formed the conclusion of muscle mass=weight really only applies to body builders or athletes with very low body fat.  That doesn't mean weight training isn't an important part of good health, but for 90% of us, we're just toning and the "it's not fat, it's muscle" meme really doesn't apply.

I'm in the middle of losing weight right now.  I, too, used to exercise like a madwoman and not pay too much attention to what I was eating, then wonder why it wasn't working.  I was told that calorie counting was out and "portion control" and "eat what you want, just don't overdo" was in.  Finally, this time around, I decided to try it the old-fashioned way... got a meal plan and calorie limit from eDiets about a month ago, and the weight has been FALLING off.  I went from 152 to 143 (I am five foot four) and every time I step on that scale I'm motivated to keep going.  I do about 35 minutes of cardio 4-5 times a week with some yoga, 10-minute DVD weight work, and hiking thrown in every now and then, and it's working.

The first week was the worst-- I was hungry and had lots of cravings-- but I stuck with it and now I eat much smaller meals and still feel full afterwards.   I keep a food diary, which has made me very mindful of what goes down the hatch.  And I still have a couple small handfuls of candy a day-- just 80 calories or so of dark chocolate, not a lot, but enough so that I don't feel deprived.

I think part of it is that I was told as a child to clean my plate and to never waste food-- good advice to get a well-balanced meal and to learn what money means--but Colt and I are hurting financially and on the rare occasions when we would eat out or get our meals paid for, I would stuff myself to take advantage of the opportunity.  I had to learn to quit that mentality, that doggie bags and half-eaten orders of fries really are OK-- it isn't worth the weight gain to "get your money's worth."  Those starving people in China aren't getting that food anyway.

Every body is different, and there are times when I'd give my left boob for some Skyline chili, but this is the first thing that has worked for me in a long, long time.

680 183 Every time I got called for jury duty, I had a child under the age of 10 at home, and I have been a stay-at-home mom for the past 21 years.  When our youngest daughter was born with Down syndrome, I realized that I won't be serving on juries ever.....

Well, Teresa, it's different in my area.  (Atlanta.)  I was a stay-at-home mom at the time with two kids 5 and 7 and NO one to take care of them.  (Plus it's over an hour to the downtown courthouse.)

Tough, the lady said.  It's your responsibility to find someone.  We make no exceptions.  What about a breast-feeding mother of an infant?  I asked.  Don't be ridiculous, was her only response.

So my husband had to take a day off work.

681 I think part of it is that I was told as a child to clean my plate and to never waste food

I think that's a concept born of Depression era circumstance. Food is (relatively) cheap and bountiful these days, so it doesn't take the same amount of effort to keep everyone fed. I hear a lot of people say they were taught that growing up. That was never something my parents said to me. They would just say not to put too much on your plate because you won't finish it. They encouraged us to start with small portions and if we were still hungry, we could go back for more.

Ahh, yes, the "eyes bigger than your stomach" line.

Also remember the "try ONE bite" of everything.  If you didn't like it, fine, but at least you tried it.  As a very young kid, I was given some cooked cabbage on my plate, and by God, I was NOT going to eat it.  My dad insisted I try it, and still teases me today 32 years later when I leaned over to my mom and whispered "Can I have some more cabbage?"

Posted by: mystry at May 11, 2010 10:04 PM (kmgIE)

692 Ok, this one is actually good enough to type out the set-up as well:

A small production comes to town and hires pretty much every actor in town to fill out the cast. All except Nick, who is the worst actor ever.

However, they realize that they have one small part that needs to be filled, so they hire Nick and instruct the stage manager to make sure Nick gets it right.

The part has one line: "Hark! I hear the cannons roar!"

So, the stage manager is working with Nick and Nick is rehearsing like crazy.
"Hark! I hear the CANNONS roar!"
"HARK! I hear the cannons roar!"
Hark! I HEAR the cannons roar!"

Opening rolls around, Nick is ready. He's got the line nailed. His cue comes up, the stage manager shoves him out on stage, the sound effect of the cannon's roar goes off and Nick says "What the fuck was that?!"

My parents were like that, too. Try it at least once. I still live by that creed when it comes to food. Can't stand people who are narrow minded when it comes to eats. I'll try pretty much anything once. Exceptions are insects and animal genitalia.

698 JamesLee, I absolutely draw the line at insects unless I'm desperate for survival. It's just one of those things I can't get my head around. As for animal genitalia, I have to admit that a few episodes of Bizarre Foods made it look more palatable. I also won't eat brain. I think that's more of a textural reason, though.

I grew up going to Chinese markets where you can get any part of the animal you want, from snout to tail. My mom makes the best oxtail soup. I like picking my fish out of a tank and having it killed fresh. I'm also fond of chicken gizzards and love the way my mom prepares it.

mmm Chicken Gizzards.....

One of these days, I must get to Gizzard City in Michigan, the place that Guy visited on TripleD.

It got to the point that my Dad and I would fight over the gizzard.  So when my Mom would freeze the chickens, she would put two gizzards in half of them.  Now, because of healthy eating, my Dad doesn't eat them any more, so I suppose they are all mine!

711 Oooh, oooh, can I come play on this side?

I heard this is a good place to post some jokes.

Here's my favorite right now -- Obama wins in a landslide in 2012!

712 722  Nope, seems to be a few other morons lurking about the place.

Posted by: s☺mej☼e at May 11, 2010 10:38 PM (4y0YU)

713 I like the hearts, too, JamesLee. Almost like the insides better than the regular parts of the chicken.

I also like menudo. That grossed out my ex, who grew up in AZ, so I didn't understand how he was repulsed by a Mexican staple. Sweet meats are really underrated these days.

What are your thoughts on New Edition?

717 What are your thoughts on New Edition?

Is that supposed to be like New Kids on the Block?

There's a Disney formed band being promoted on the Disney channel called "All Star Weekend." Looks like a typical commercialized boy band.

I want to know how I get to be one of those Disney Channel host people.

Posted by: wherestherum at May 11, 2010 10:52 PM (gofDd)

718 Just to the point, you do it at night for......what ya kidding? Two passes down the street at 10 minute intervals so as not to spook the locals, then on the third pass ya place the package tight to the under-carriage, just on top of the muffler, then, you...................SPRAY SILLY STRING all over the windshield, toss 3 or 4 eggs on the hood and wait for the fun as the bag of dog-poop bursts into flames half way thru the morning commute! Brought to you by "PSYCHO NEIGHBOR KIDS!!!"

WTF is wrong over at Red Eye?

Now that they have ratings, they are trying to get "cool" so they can get invited to all the NY cocktail parties by calling AZ fascists.

Screw 'em!

726 Night, Rum and Joe.

Jim, what the hell's going on with Red Eye? Has it really jumped that far over the shark in the five or six months since I last watched it?

733 29 Hey, any of you morons have any experience with the airsoft guns?
Posted by: Terry at May 11, 2010 10:21 PM (ddL+W)

Stay away from spring guns - they are slightly more reliable if you spend enough money on them, but annoying and most of them are cheap. I have one that will probably last forever but I never use it.

AEGs (electric) are good, but again, don't skimp (though I got a great low-range AEG rifle for $30 that was fairly accurate.

Watch the FPS range and what weight BB that speed is for - over 300fps could injure things like eyes (wear glasses), under about 250 and it will just flop all over the place.

The heavier the pellet, the more accurate but slower - thus shorter range.

Generally speaking, the more expensive the more accurate.

Don't go overcomplicated - if it has a million parts and does 20 things, it'll break.

Check out airsoft forums and do a little reading, lots of info. Like buying anything.

American Citizens kidnapped in America are turning up dead in Mexico.

No real coverage in the media outside of local AZ news.

He was an American and not an illegal, White, no known ties to drugs, and gave generously to Mexico's poor cloths and other stuff collected up here. It seems they just wanted his truck, and then they killed him. He was 67.

Well, he was driving a pickup truck, was he not, SIR? Pickup trucks are symbols of racism, and therefore SIR, he deserved to die

Before you accuse ME of hypocrisy SIR, my chauffeur is Pakistani, my doorman is black, my maid is Salvadoran, and my psychotherapist is Jewish !!!

744 Don't forget the brand of  canada goose anyway. It is because Canada goose clothes could bring you all that you really need in the chilly winter. A nice canada goose coat absolutely brings a funny winter life. Canada goose label also earns great admiration and appreciation, which other winter coats cannot gain from customers. Perhaps you could experience canada goose clothing in order to learn well about this style of winter clothing. Then, you can leave your own comments on canada goose coats on the website. Of course, you also could find out other comments and reviews on Canada goose from the Internet.(yang)
