Overnight Open Thread - Commie Day Edition
— Maetenloch

Today is May Day otherwise known as Communist Victim Day.

The 4 Chord Song!

Here Aussie musical comedy group Axis of Awesome show that all you need to have a hit song is the right 4 chords. And in case you're wondering they're playing a I V vi IV progression in E. If you include the classic I IV V progression and the Ice Cream changes (I vi IV V) that pretty much defined 50's music, I bet you've covered 75%+ of all pop songs. So go write a 4 chord song and you too can have a hit.

Jimmy Carter: Kitteh Killer
Yeah this is old as in from 1990. And yes he killed his sister-in-law's cat with a shotgun. And like usual he blames the victim. What a bastard.

Crazy Tinfoil Hat Rumor: N. Korea Torpedoed The Gulf of Mexico Oil Platform
And Obama has ordered a total news blackout on it. Also the only way to stop the oil flow may be a nuclear bomb. Of course there's absolutely zero sourcing on all this and it seems to be missing the requisite extraterrestrial involvement. Oh and remember - it's shiny side out to block the mindrays! H/T to CH.

Is Apple Getting Too Big For Their Britches?
I have a iPhone and have had Apple products in the past and have always happy with their quality and ease of use. Which is pretty much why I considered them in the first place. But recently Apple the company has been showing their dark side which was easier to ignore when they were basically an also-ran. But now they're the largest phone company in the US and their neurotic obsession with secrecy and control is beginning to become apparent to the general public. With their recent use of law enforcement to punish a blog for showing a lost iphone prototype, banning a seal hunt iphone game without explanation, and refusal to allow users the option to even install flash if they want to, they're making their famous 1984 ad look more and more ironic. It's one thing to want to offer a nice user experience, but this seems more about control and paranoia. I still respect their engineering and attention to detail and I love my iphone but as soon as Android matures and is a decent alternative, I'm completely open to switching over.

The 9 Deadly Words Used By A Women
Yeah 'Fine', 'That's okay', and 'Go ahead' all pretty much mean the opposite. And 5 minutes means 30 minutes minimum unless it refers to something that you have to do. And then there's the deadly 'Whatever'.

Yeah where I live they've slowly been shrinking the regular garbage bin and enlarging the recyclable bin. And they keep adding stricter rules as to what is recyclable. So in response I've declared everything to be recyclable once the main bin full.

112 I've been listening to more and more country music lately. It's the only popular music with genuine lyrics. Plus, nobody hates me.

What are my choices otherwise?

-- The utterly sophisticated eunuch voices on NPR telling me how awful I am for being a white American, interrupted occasionally by bland and obscure classical music or nasal white boys talking about jazz.

-- The cries of dinosaurs and mastodons on the classic rock station.

-- Whiny little f****ts on the prog-rock station singing about how awful I am for being a white American, interrupted by whiny little f****t disk-jockeys telling me how important it is to wash my FUCKING GARBAGE.

-- Middle-class black guys trying to sound like badass m*****f*****s on the "urban contemporary" station while they sing about how awful I am for being a white American, interrupted by admittely awesome DJs.

So more and more I listen to my own disks and iTunes files, or to the country music station.

The Daily News

Police evacuated New York’s Times Square Saturday night after a dark-colored sports utility vehicle was found to be smoking and a small “flash” was observed by firefighters on the scene.

Officers at the scene said the evacuation order stemmed from an “emergency investigation” and dozens of officers blocked access to the busy central Manhattan square, which is popular with tourists and theater-goers.

New York Police Department spokesman Paul Browne said a vehicle had been left in Times Square, with smoke seen coming from it.

There was an unconfirmed report that someone was seen running from the car, Browne said. A bomb squad responded and a small fire was extinguished, he said.

“We’re just trying to determine if it was anything other than a car fire,” said Browne. “We don’t know yet if it’s anything more than that.”

274 One of the great ironies of this moment in history is that to liberals, national socialism is the ultimate put down - "My Dad wouldn't buy me an iPhone - he is a total NAZI!" While at the same time, the left has basically adopted national socialism as its agenda.

Why does the Left automatically to Nazism as the Greatest Evil That Ever Was? I never understood why liberals compare everything they don't like to Nazis/Hitler. As if no other greater evil on this planet ever occurred. Except maybe slavery, but I don't hear them whine about being enslaved as much as oppressed.

281 82 Yeah where I live they've slowly been shrinking the regular garbage bin and enlarging the recyclable bin. And they keep adding stricter rules as to what is recyclable. So in response I've declared everything to be recyclable once the main bin full. ------------ Round my neck of the woods, the state came to the city and said "you're not in compliance with the recycling statutes (how much gets recycled vs landfilled), so we're going to fine you unless you implement mandatory recycling", to which the city responded with a study showing we are, in fact, in compliance. The state replied with "we don't care, we'll fine you anyway if you don't implement mandatory recycling". So the city cut a contract with the local monopoly garbage haulers and mysterious new bins started showing up. Except there's no actual recycling program behind it (which I'm willing to bet can be put back on the state), so I hear the recycling all ends up in the county landfill anyway. We just have to pay lots more, because we've got recycling collection fees in addition to garbage collection fees.

what is tethering?

Well, that opens up a lot of great chances, but the real answer is tethering is connecting your cellphone to your laptop and using the cellphone's broadband connection to run your laptop's internet connection.  It is cheating the man.  Instead of buying a laptop card from verizon or att, you use your unlimited data plan to run your computer, without buying a card.

Posted by: wherestherum at May 01, 2010 11:04 PM (gofDd)

The effect of Soviet propaganda and their useful western idiots.

The NAZIs were pretty damn bad - genocide level bad - obviously. However, the Soviets and Red Chinese were no better then the NAZIs.

After the German attack on their former Soviet ally, not only were there no more then a few crackpots defending the NAZIs, there was the powerful Soviet propaganda arm to make sure that the NAZIs were seen as worse then the Soviets.

This allowed the NAZIs to become the definition of evil in the post-WWII era, even though they were at least equaled in some places after WWII (China, Cambodia)..

National Socialism (fascism)

Traditional Authoritarian regimes

Real libertarianism

Conservatism

Moderatism

Liberalism

Democratic Socialism (Euro Socialism)

International Socialism (Communism)

Anarchism

This is a bloody wreck. Anarchism should be an extreme version of Libertarianism, and neither of these should be near either communism or fascism. A much more meaningful breakdown;

Anarchism

Libertarianism

Conservatism

Moderatism

Liberalism

Democratic Socialism

Traditional Authoritarian regimes

National Socialism

International Socialism

Hell, the progenitor of the damn "Democratic Socialist" European Union was Oswald Mosley, aka the head of the British Union of Fascists.

I've always thought that it would be enlightening to teach kids about both the African and Mediterranean slave trade - where the latter of course was Muslims raiding southern Europe for slaves.

Partly this is a tough point for the PC police to deal with, partly because it is a fuller lesson - there is nothing special about the Atlantic slave trade. Human beings have enslaved each other whenever they were given the opportunity.

359 'Rum, I'm just pointing out that slavery has far, far been the norm in history then it has been in the last couple of hundred years. And even at that, not only Nazi Germany but Imperial Japan  during WWII used captured peoples as slaves. So slavery is not only commen, but was also used up and within the 20th Century.

I remember when it was on TV and I dismissed it as stupid. It was before I was huge Whedon fan, too. Then my dad rented Serenity so I sat and watched the last half of the movie with him. That sparked my interest in watching the series and the beginning of the movie.

I can't seem to get into Dr. Who, though.

And I know this because I got in trouble in high school for telling off my lefty teachers and classmates that if they wanted to teach black people about genocide (because they were comparing slavery to genocide) they should talk about Rwanda and Ethiopia. I was shut down and whined to about how many people died in the Middle Passage.

The school I am getting my degree at hosted a conference on slavery in the U.S. last March, and one of the speakers was our senior, technically retired, Southern History professor. He was asked to deliver an address on on how his views of slavery had changed over the years, he having been born in 1930, and probably teaching from the 1950s on. He started out by commenting that if he kept to the assigned topic, it would have been a very short address indeed, as his views on slavery and race had not changed at all, and after that proceeded to declare that slavery and the Middle Passage, while evil, where not nearly as bad as the Holocaust and suchlike, that America was not as wicked as she was made out to be, etc. Presumably the implication was that people focused to narrowly and blew it out of proportion.

Unfortunately, I was not attending at the time, so I didn't get to hear it, though the substance of the speech was relayed to me by some of my peers who were there. Evidently it didn't go down well - I heard that one person in attendance said that they wanted to vomit after hearing it, and all my peers and the professor in whose class we were currently in were aghast and shocked that he would says such things. I just tried not to laugh out loud.

When you are 70+ years old you can get away with saying such things - you have already had your career!

Within the last year, our local med MJ dispensaries have had several burglaries or robberies; one of them had the owner arrested for kidnapping his partner and forcing him to sign over his half of the business; and one was shut down because the owners were using it as a front to produce large amounts of MJ for shipment to the midwest (they got caught when one of their employees was caught transporting a load to Oklahoma). I wouldn't bat an eye if it was made completely legal, but Med MJ dispensaries are an abomination. If it's legal, it should be distributed through existing pharmacies, like any other legal controlled substance.

Ummm, ok. Then before that they were referred to as 'servants', like in the Bible.

Slaves are slaves, no matter what the English derivitve is.

Uhm, no, the Bible mentions slavery as an established practice.

You can also find references to slavery in the Code of Hammurabi.

My point is that slavery has been around probably since the time humans begin to practice agriculture regularly (roughly 10,000 years ago IIRC).

I think it was Aristotle who believed in natural slavery, the idea that some people, by their very nature, are destined to be slaves.

Adolf actually was a less-than-original thinker / para-phraser.

But he was such an egotisical, narcissitic tool (remind you of anyone?) that he believed that the German people could pull off any stupid fucking thing he wanted to do, simply because they were the German people.

He had posted an article on Town Hall on the subject and I emailed him telling him about a black chick I worked with who had told me "no people on earth have been as mistreated as the black people, including the Jews." A statement that absolutely floored me.

To my surprise he emailed me back talking about the Slavic peoples, and in more recent history, the Irish, who, while not enslaved per se, suffered 800 years of oppression by the English who took everything from them, cattle, crops, etc for their own use. During the potato famine, the English continued taking everything, leaving the people to starve. There are accounts of people with their mouths stained green as they resorted to trying to survive on grass. Those who escaped to America were forced into indentured servitude.

One of the things that absolutely infuriates me about the oppression wars is that it's assumed only "colored" people were ever persecuted. History so obviously debunks that, but the Left has co-opted everything and no one ever learns different. What's also ironic when the Left bleats about how black slaves were treated, they overlook the fact that the Chinese and the Irish were given the most dangerous jobs because they were considered expendable. You don't want to accidentally kill your slave that cost you $2,000 to purchase.

I would've slapped that coworker of yours and tell her to ask the millions of Chinese who died at Mao's hand and at the hands of the Japanese.

549 #564  ! The Ex Consort of Hades is shocked to hear of this development.

Why?  I just think that was put in there so they can have more God of War games later (although not starring Kratos).  I'd rather have the game series end on a good note than some half-ass way to reboot the series later.

561 #569  But that doesn't allow for a God of War 4 game.  Video games are where Hollywood got the idea of Franchises for films.  Then the Video games took the idea back with making storylines requiring fluidity.  Always something I've enjoyed about the Zelda games, is that they're not really sequels to eachother in most cases, and you don't need them to be.

It makes the backstory for Zelda aggravating to follow though. And that's part of the gaming experience. Admittedly, God of War doesn't have the most coherent backstory either.

I don't want a 4th God of War game.  (There's actually 5 already, if you count the mobile version and the prequel).

Well mpur, my son’s Star Wars phase was rather young, between 4 and 5 years old. Then he moved on to Power Rangers, and then Doctor Who. Indiana Jones was recent, like 7 ½. I think my son was so into Star Wars because he has sci-fi geeks for both parents, which also explains the Doctor Who. Indiana Jones was thanks to the Lego sets though. I’ve never been able to explain the fascination with the Titanic, though; he’s had that since he was 3 years old. If I believed in past lives I’d swear he was a passenger on the Titanic.

The way the bond market works is that the Greeks would still be paying 6%. Whoever sold the bond discounted the price enough that the 6% the Greeks are paying would actually be a 20% return on the new bondholders investment.

If you're talking about the ones zerohedge freaked out about, that's not really accurate.

Those were 10-years, but ones which mature in 3 weeks. They dropped enough that the annualized return would be 30% or so; the actual return would have been a little under 1.5%.

753 A lot of people complain about the dialog in Ep II, especially the fireplace scene with Anakin and Padme.  I watched that scene about a dozen times before I realized they were even talking.  Goddamn I love that leather corset dress.

754 One of my favorite bad movies is a late seventies b-movie with Tom Hanks going schitzo from playing Dungeons and Dragons. The movie is Mazes and Monsters. D&D was in its early days and people were scared of it because some players went overboard trying to play for real, getting stuck in sewers and stuff.

755 How are we supposed to believe that a whiney little scared bitch became Darth Vader?

The whole time I was watching the 3 movies I just never made that connection in my head. I mean, I knew he was going to be Vader, but there's no emotional correlation AT ALL. I remember cheering in the theatre when he became Vader, though it wasn't Christensen I was thinking of as Vader.

Does that make any sense?

757 okay so I was thinking about what to do on Memorial Day, and it strikes me, that all the fun things to do, you need someone else to do them with you, and I don't have anyone else

hmmm

761 774 Any of the Star Wars prequels.  I watched a little bit of II earlier.  Until Hayden Christiansen opened his mouth and started whining.  How are we supposed to believe that a whiney little scared bitch became Darth Vader?

You can't.  You can't even believe that him and Obi Wan had a friendship, because they don't really show it.  They describe what they've gone through together, but you don't see them bond like Luke and Han did over the original 3 films.

/The prequels should be buried in the Marianas Trench.

827 From Patterico's front page:

“What troubles me is when I hear people say that all of government is inherently bad,” Obama said after receiving an honorary doctor of laws degree. “When our government is spoken of as some menacing, threatening foreign entity, it ignores the fact that in our democracy, government is us.”

Government, he said, is the roads we drive on and the speed limits that keep us safe. It’s the men and women in the military, the inspectors in our mines, the pioneering researchers in public universities.”

828 I understand, TEX.  We'd been broken down, too.  We'd spent an entire year building our house, with our own bare hands, sweat, blood and tendons, only to be told we would not be allowed to finish it.  So, it's been sitting there for 2-years without anything being done to it.  Neither party was budging.  Bank said "no" to negotiations.

Finally, we decided we had put so much into it we couldn't just walk away.  We have a lot more invested in it than the loan "servicer".

I think he's in fundamental disagreement with the Founders.  For them, government was something to be hated and feared.  A necessary evil, with emphasis on evil.  And the difference between the military and most of what liberals like in government is that the military is one of the few specific duties that the Constitution gives to the feds.  Redistribution of wealth is not one.  Nor health care.

857 I understand, TEX.

We have a lot more invested in it than the loan "servicer".

i,m kind of in the same boat..3 years ago i got new central air..new compressor, dbl pain windows..got every thing done but the kitchen and to think i have to walk away really puts the hurt on a mind

Well not in any one place. I know I've covered them a few times on various ONTs and I believe Ace has covered them as well in one of the Epic Threads. The short version is nothing too explicit (e.g. I like X done to my Y) or likely to spook Ace's advertisers. Ace survives off this blog so it's uncool to put that at that risk since he has a certain, uh, lifestyle that he's accustomed to.

Interesting article about New Coke, but my tin-foil hat started tingling, so here's my conspiracy theory: Everybody was switching to the new artificial sweeteners during that time, so the "classic" sodas of the past were gone regardless. Coke was losing ground to Pepsi, so they came up with a plan to essentially sell Pepsi while capitalizing on Coke's iconic status. Sorta like Harley selling a more reliable Japanese-built bike, if you will.

The plan all along:

1) Introduce "New" Coke  using a different formula (but not the one that did best w/ focus groups)

2) Astroturf "protests" calling for the return of "classic" Coke

3) The public is reminded that Coca-Cola is an "institution"

4) Release "classic" Coke with the new formula that tastes like Pepsi (the one that tested best among focus groups). Media buzz causes people who had stopped drinking old Coke to try "classic" Coke.

5) Profit!

892 Good Morning Morons;

Day shift coming in now.  So Jimmeh killed his sister-in-law's cat who was sitting under a bird feeder. I hope that was down there in Plains and not in Atlanta.  In addition, I suspect that Plains is like most Southern towns and has laws against firing a weapon in residential areas (which he is in).

Of course most residents don't have a permanent security detail who will keep out the local yocals. I also like the part where he "only meant to sting" the cat.  What an asshole.

I used to have one of the neighbor's cats who would come over and sit under the bird feeder. After a while a different neighbor's dog noticed the cat and the game was on. After a while the cat figured it wasn't worth it.

It's like people who have things consistently given to them, while doing little or nothing to earn it, develop a strong sense of entitlement and continually demand more and more.  It's like he's a liberal fascist or something.

Coincidentally, heard Darius on one of the cable country networks.  He's as good as ever.  Not a slam at all since I've been countried out generally for 30 years what with Dad's non-stop Marty Robbins, Johnny Cash, Sons of the Pioneers with breaks for the odd Russian romantic and the Kingston Trio, inhale, the pure county station is fabulous for insomnia.  Something to look at and listen to that eases you back to sleep without fillng your mind with hatred and filth.  I also finally get Kenny Chesney.  There's a show on that channel they air occasionally that features slightly uncategorizable artists that is really compelling.

Thanks for the videos.  The Axis is indeed Awesome.  The lead has that Jack Black/Steve Harwell [Smash Mouth] look that is somehow quite entrancing.  Harwell's gotten thin in the meantime.  Love that cat.  Tell you what, when any of my cats get the black eye look, it's time to break out the welding gloves because they have mayhem on their minds.
