Overnight Open Thread - Countdown Edition
— Maetenloch

Since everyone's probably in a pissy mood as we await the final ObamaCare vote, I figured we might as well steer into the anger and enjoy a little revenge fighting...

10 Fight Scenes That You Can Watch Over And Over
All of these are pretty good scenes and still fun to watch including even the completely unnecessary fight in They Live. But of all of these my favorite is still the bar fight in Kill Bill Vol. 1. Mostly for the choreography and the music and editing. Plus I just enjoy watching bad people get cut up with sharp things. Not quite as much as seeing them blown up but it's still pretty damn good.

Obama restores Full Funding to ACORN
This was done quietly in a Mar. 16th OMB order. So we have that to look forward to.

Why does bacon taste good? It could be the umami.
You probably know about the four basic tastes that we all learned in school: sweetness, sourness, bitterness and saltiness. And we're all pretty familiar with these. Well, it turns out there is fifth taste, called umami, that was first isolated by a Japanese scientist back in 1908. It's been described as a 'brothy' or 'meaty' taste that's found foods such as Parmesan cheese, ripe tomatoes, prosciutto, Worcestershire sauce, asparagus, and yes bacon! This is probably why people love the baconz so much - it activates all of our taste buds.

crispy_bacon_1.jpg

But wait - there's now a 6th taste - the fat taste - and bacon has got that as well.

13 Candies From Your Childhood
I miss candy cigarettes. Real cigarettes don't taste nearly as good.

Springtime means one thing: Penis festivals in Japan!
Well fertility and a good harvest used to be one of the most important things to societies. So carrying around huge phalluses was cheap insurance. And yes there is a vajayjay festival too.

Woo hoo - Bee keeping now allowed in NYC
In case you were being apiarily oppressed in the big apple.

19 OK, humor for you all. My son was watching Star Trek Generations today (he loves the whole borg/Data thing) and Picard threw a hissy fit. My son said "Wow, James T. Most of those candies must be from relatively recent childhoods because the only one I 'member is the candy cigs, which were awesome. The others? No clue.

from Fox News:

With his health care holy war, President Obama is sending America at least 10 messages since taking office:

1. I win; you lose.
2. My will; not the will of the people.
3. Government of Obama, by Obama, for Obama; not government of the people, by the people, for the people.
4. Corrupt House rules and autocracy; not play by the rules and democracy.
5. “I’ll tread on you” now steps on “Don’t tread on me.”
6. “I, the president”; not “We, the People.”
7. “All men are created equal” but I am more equal than others.
8. “The dissent of the president” overrules “the consent of the governed.”
9. “Give me tyranny and give me debt” replaces “Give me liberty or give me death.”
10. “That government is best which governs most” supersedes “That government is best which governs least.”

logprof,

The selections commitee needs to get there noses out of the big east/acc butts. And also some of the other big conferences as well. The big 10 should not have had five teams in the tourney. Minnesota had not earned it. The so-called mid majors are getting better every year.

Why? It's pretty simple. There are more and more good players becoming availbable to these colleges, and they can't all go to "major" schools. Therefore, the mid-majors are getting stronger and stronger and that must soon be recognized.

Georgetown deserved to be in, but a three seed? They were one of the best twelve teams in the country? Really?

Louisville and Marquette had no business making this field. Sometimes I think the only reason they want to expand the field to 96 teams is so they will have an excuse to put the entire Big East conference in the tournament.

I suspect those who are more sanguine about this bill are young enough to think they are benefiting from it.

But, honestly, trivializing the emotions of anyone at AoSHQ as whining deserves a STFU.

You know what I hate: making the bed with all the fitted sheets and pillow nonsense.

But you know what I love: sleeping on clean sheets!

My sheets are all clean and lavender-y smelling....heavenly!

(okay, that's random and kinda boring, but we're all pretty much spent at this point, right? it's all I've got )

Posted by: laceyunderalls at March 21, 2010 08:11 PM (qRU1N)

202 I actually like making the bed.  I feel better being in my room just because the bed is made.  And crawling into bed at night, when it's been made just feels right.

203 laceyunderalls, I hate how all the fitted sheets have the elastic all the way around now so you can never tell which side is which and you struggle to get the damn bed made.

Posted by: ParanoidGirlInSeattle at March 21, 2010 08:12 PM (RZ8pf)

204 When the kid was yammering on and then saw the boots, the first thing I did was to say in mock Mexican (trying to use my Italian knowledge), "I think I'll shut up now and ignore you guys. I've never seen you before." See? That chatty illegal got a bunch of people shot. Although I didn't mind seeing the American truck driver shot as he deserved it--and probably a Dem. (Although somehow I doubt there are that many Texan illegal smugglers.) I was doubly happy about his shooting when the guy didn't have enough brains to fake being dead after the first, single, shot hit him. He should be a fictional character Darwin Award winner.

PGiS, I look for the washing instructions tag. I deem that the bottom and put on the sheet accordingly.

207 Yeah, no kidding.  They were going to let him go if he could have just refrained from crawling.

As founder of the ONT and Blogger Emeritus I have to call bullshit on the list of "10 Fight Scenes."

I can cite at least 3 scenes from "The Warriors" that I would much rather watch on an endless loop than anything included on that list.

And speaking of "The Warriors," there's a long-standing policy at AoS that all posts must have at least 15% "The Warriors" content, though I note that the policy hasn't been adhered to as of late.

I've spoken my piece and shall say no more.

287 tonight's disaster in D.C. reminds me of Damon Albarn's song "Herculean"

Standing on the dark canal
By the gasworks
Celebrate the ghost gone by
When all love hurts

And the medicine man's here 24/7
You can get it fast in Armageddon
Everyone on the way to heaven
Slowly

Call for prayer has come around here
In the morning
Wash our faces go to work
There is no warning

That it all gets better when life is straight
It's bigger than you and the Welfare State
And we'll keep singing it's not too late
For you

God forbid the gov't ever be competent. (Military excepted.)

The soldiers are competent.   Government oversight has made all the processes by which the military operates nonfunctional, just like the rest of the things it is responsible for.

302 291 M80sB, how do you know "did I stutter?" lady?

On my FB? Old friend of the family from church camp. She was a good kid for many yrs, but something happened to her in high school & she completely changed. For some reason, she got married out of nowhere & it seems her reasoning was that she'd be better off in Canada.

She's aiming for dual citizenship, but what she doesn't know is that it's difficult to get one. My pastor's wife is from Canada, & she's been telling my mom about the difficulties in getting one. Don't know if she ever will--& her record is spotless. But the old friend of the family doesn't want to see anything other than her little world. I feel bad for her.

303 I was so tense the 2nd-half of my Spring Break that I feel I need another one. Anyway, TX AG is going to make a statement tonight or tomorrow outside our state capitol. Hope it makes me feel better. I'd be crying in my beer right now, if I actually drank the stuff.

The Texas Medical Association has already come out and said (and I paraphrase)

"If the government can't fix Medicare, how in the hell are they going to manage every single American's health care? "

I think Texas is getting hit with something like 24 billion in unfunded mandates over the next decade. My guess is the AG is filing a lawsuit.

330 It was pretty clear watching Pelosi that she knew they were signing their one way ticket to the minority tonight. Her speech was perfunctory, she was obviously nervous and laughing creepily while the applause from her fellow D's was tepid at best. Compare that to Boehner who gave an aggressive and confident speech to energetic cheers from the R's. And Stupaks little soliloquy was so laughingly full of shit that the only time you'll see it again is when the R who opposes him uses it in an ad against him. Ain't no way the dems buddies in the media will show it.  And Fox News was a disgrace tonight and Hot Air spent more time threatening it's commentors than going after dems so they've apparently decided to become little green fuckwits part duh.
