Steve McQueen Celebrates the 4th
One interesting thing about the Great Escape is how close it stayed to the real story plus the fact that most of the actors were themselves WWII veterans with several having been POWs during the war.
E.J. Dionne Is Smarter Than You
So he's able to explain the 1,337 words of the Declaration of Independence to little people like you in just 747 words. It turns out the original revolutionaries really wanted higher taxes and larger federal government.
We need to recognize the deep flaws in this vision of our present and our past. A reading of the Declaration of Independence makes clear that our forebears were not revolting against taxes as such — and most certainly not against government as such.In the long list of “abuses and usurpations” the Declaration documents, taxes don’t come up until the 17th item, and that item is neither a complaint about tax rates nor an objection to the idea of taxation. Our Founders remonstrated against the British crown “for imposing taxes on us without our consent.” They were concerned about “consent,” i.e. popular rule, not taxes.

Remembering the Bicentennial
It's hard to believe that the Bicentennial was 35 years ago. And the sad thing is that it happened deep in the 70's with all the attendant tackiness and subliminal gloom. I was a wee lad then but my memories of that year's 4th of July in Nashville were something pretty much like this video. Note the prominent display of muskets - I doubt you'd see that nowadays.
2011 Nathan's Hot Dogs Winners
This year it was Joey Chestnut with 62 dogs and Sonya “The Black Widow” Thomas with 40. Former champion Kobayashi didn't compete again this year due to the Major League Eating exclusivity clause. He ate 69 dogs at an alternate competition.

The Creepiness of a 7x Slowed Down Modem Dial-Up Sound
If this were in a movie soundtrack it would be playing when the crew first enter the derelict alien spacecraft.
An Inspired Version Of ‘Stars And Stripes Forever’
They just don't make talent and jackets like this anymore.
Can I become a Scottish laird for £30?
Yes. But you can also become Galactic Emperor for the same price and it'll be just as official. On the other hand real Scottish titles can be bought with the cheapest coming in at around $106,000. So start buying those lottery tickets.

Katy Perry
Sure why not.

The Yahoo AoSHQ group. Bla bla bla. And don't forget about the Job Bank.

So, if Obamacare is a tax, as the administration is arguing, and it was passed by an illegal procedure in the face of widespread opposition how does that mean the founders would feel about it?

I've got an idea.
People who believe "universal health care" is a right could all band together and agree to include anyone, regardless of ability to pay, can join the collective. From each according to his ability to pay, to each according to his need of healthcare.
There'd be no legal wrangling, since it would be a choice, not raw government force. And of course, all the good little Hollywierdoes would sign up...right?

Tsk, tsk, E.J. - that's a straw man. While more and more of the tax burden is being shifting upon less and less people, that doesn't mean the current levels of taxation are the "lowest in decades".
Of course, this statement is from the man who stubbornly insists there is no "liberal media".

Katy Perry's tits aren't spectacular enough to give her credibility on healthcare policy. But they're nice enough that I'd probably hear her out on tariff and free trade issues.

But since it didn't directly say how much the tax was in the Declaration of Independence, the Founders must have not cared that much about it, just that they didn't get to impose it themselves!

"We must not let our rulers load us with perpetual debt. We must make our selection between economy and liberty or profusion and servitude. If we run into such debts as that we must be taxed in our meat in our drink, in our necessities and comforts, in our labors and in our amusements, for our callings and our creeds...our people.. must come to labor sixteen hours in the twenty-four, give earnings of fifteen of these to the government for their debts and daily expenses; and the sixteenth being insufficient to afford us bread, we must live.. We have not time to think, no means of calling the mis-managers to account, but be glad to obtain subsistence by hiring ourselves to rivet their chains on the necks of our fellow suffers. Our landholders, too...retaining indeed the title and stewardship of estates called theirs, but held really in trust for the treasury, must...be contented with penury, obscurity and exile.. private fortunes are destroyed by public as well as by private extravagance.
This is the tendency of all human governments. A departure from principle becomes a precedent for a second; that second for a third; and so on, till the bulk of society is reduced to mere automatons of misery, to have no sensibilities left but for sinning and suffering... And the fore horse of this frightful team is public debt. Taxation follows that, and in its train wretchedness and oppression."Posted by: Thomas Jefferson at July 04, 2011 05:46 PM (vRJ+m)
Posted by: E.J. Dionne, Constitutional Scholar at July 04, 2011 05:47 PM (Txl/u)
I know states’ rights advocates revere the 10th Amendment. But when the word “states” appears in the Constitution, it typically is part of a compound word, “United States,” or refers to how the states and their people will be represented in the national government. We learned it in elementary school: The Constitution replaced the Articles of Confederation to create a stronger federal government, not a weak confederate government. Perry’s view was rejected in 1787 and again in 1865.
Pray-tell EJ, given what you've said in this paragraph, why do you think the 10th Amendment was insisted, by the anti-Federalists, to be part of the Bill of Rights? Thereby, the 10th Amendment makes the States' rights de jure part of the Constitution (except it has been made nigh-useless now, thanks to all kinds of judicial tampering *sigh*)! You wouldn't say that just because the 1st Amendment wasn't in the main Constitutional text proper that Freedom of the Press isn't part of the Constitution now, would you EJ?

In honor of Independence Day, which grievance from the Declaration of Independence do you think is most enduring and applicable today?
1) "He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good";
2) "He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harass our people, and eat out their substance";
3) "He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws; giving his Assent to their Acts of pretended Legislation";
4) "mposing taxes on us without our consent"; or
5) A different one of your choosing?
Interesting how it seems governments all eventually tend toward the same abuses, isn't it?

I was in Washington DC on July 4,1976, with my family. Including parents, there were 8 of us. I was the second oldest kid (daughter). It was the most awesome fireworks display and I felt the total patriotism of normal Americans that night. We had to wait around until about 2 -3 am to catch a bus back to our campground, and there were no issues with the crowd or any anxiety about being out that late.
G_d Bless America, and I hope someday I can go back there in my middle age and enjoy the spectacle and patriotism I felt that day, when we get vot out the current administration.

The bigger the difference between the two fingers, the smaller the size of a man's penis. Or, to look at the other way, the longer his ring finger is compared to his index finger, the better endowed he is.
(Emphasis added.) No. The smaller the difference the smaller the size. If the ring finger is longer compared to the index finger, the difference is greater. Duh. And the weiner is bigger.

I lost the only maple tree on the entire property that wasn't planted too close to the house. It was at least a couple of inches around the trunk and the wind just snapped it about 18 inches from the ground. A couple of people had ornamental bushes uprooted but are pretty sure they can save them.
One of the neighbors lost a big chunk of shingles, but they're on vacation so no one can contact them to let them know there's a problem.

I have great neighbors. They have an electric chainsaw, which I didn't know existed, and they cut the tree down to ground level for me. The people across the street said they saw one of the larger maples laying over in the storm as well. but it was fine once the wind quit ( which is a good thing since both big trees are much too close to the house and could have made a huge mess).

Oh, Chemjeff, I know this is late but I second those who advised you to wait on any drastic measures with your greenery. I just found out I have Scarlet Pimpernel, whether native or planted I have no way of knowing, in a couple of spots around my flowerbeds. I'd never have found it if I'd been more agressive in removing the previous homeowner's plantings.
Posted by: Polliwog at July 04, 2011 09:40 PM (oMKP8)
Yeah, I read that too.
Here's two things that made me laugh.
"As critics point out, “The Star-Spangled Banner” didn’t become the official anthem until 1931. One long-standing rival: “America the Beautiful,” which celebrates the nation’s spacious skies and shining seas rather than a long-forgotten naval battle in the War of 1812. Supporters have long loved its optimism—and, they note, you can actually sing it."
Long forgotten? It's commemorated in the Anthem! And the song is easy to sing. EASY to sing. It's not hard. And I'll get to why in a second. But the problem isn't the song, it's the singers. More often than not, at large events, you get some poptart throwaway celebrity douchebag who's always looking to show off. Always! Those idiotic little R&B singers trying to warble their way through the verses, trying to show off their impressive pipes. But if they would stop trying to preen and actually sing the song they could do things like, I don't know, remember the lyrics maybe? It's a simple melody, it's an easy song to song. Do it write and people will gladly join in.
Next...
"New England poet Katharine Lee Bates wrote the words, New Jersey church organist Samuel Ward composed the music—and the American public put them together after finding Bates’s poem in a magazine and Ward’s stately melody in a hymnal. That, say fans, is democracy."
Fuck that! The Star Spangled Banner is sung to the tune of To Anacreon In Heaven. What's that? That, my friends, is, or was, a rather popular drinking song. A drinking song. And that, my friends, is how is should be. Wishy washy put together by committee feel gooderism versus getting buzzed and singing LOUDLY about hardcore sht that went down? I know what I'm game for.

One of the peculiarities involved is that you have to blow off the first rain in a while so that it rinses the crap off your roof, and only then you can collect. Seems like a hassle.

okay I'm feeling better now about getting an electric lawn mower
I mowed my lawn and I didn't even use 1/4th of the battery (yes it's a small lawn)
Posted by: chemjeff at July 04, 2011 09:51 PM (8CvZg)
cthulhu it does seem overpriced for what is tantamount to a sealed barrel. $100? Srsly? BUT, I have this one side of my house, it's a narrow strip, which is essentially just a mudpit. Not much vegetation grows there. And so I'm thinking about just paving it over, but getting a rain barrel to collect the water from the drain spout on that side of the house. Or I could get a big tube and just run the rain water down to the garden beneath the mudpit. Maybe that would be better? I'm not sure.

Don't let your grass get too high before mowing though. I shorted out our electric mower by doing that. I would like to point out though that I never ran over the cord in the couple of years I used it, a sore point since John and his dad were taking bets on how soon we'd need a new one.
Aaand now I'm off to sleep for reals.

People that have cisterns usually have a "damper/diverter" thingo in the downspout. After it rained for a couple of minutes, you would run out and switch the handle so the clean rain would go into the cistern. (The first couple of minutes the rain runoff would clean off the dirt off of the roof or from in the gutters)

Not everyone needs the vocal abilities of Luciano Pavarotti. Most people can't sing to save their life, anyway. It's a moot point to me.

that's the ticket. pipe from the barrel then use soak-er hose (small holed or porous hose) in the garden area.

I have a friend who is a mezzo soprano... the time I heard her sing the Star Spangled Banner was the most amazing! She lives in Hawaii now, so I haven't heard her sing for a while, tho.

Hmm I hadn't thought of that idea - so hook up a soaker hose permanently to the outlet of the drain spout?

Unless you have a particular need for rain water (e.g. carnivorous plants) or water in general (live in a desert without a well?), I'd just run it off to somewhere else in your yard or to the storm drains.
If you are going to do rain water collection, you have to let every early rain of a series go -- which means you have the same disposal problem you have now. Then you catch only the capacity of your barrels....after which, you guessed it, you have the same problem you have now. Then you have to pump it out for use somewhere -- when you could probably just use city water under pressure without a pump. And, of course, you'll regularly run out of water in the system.
Posted by: cthulhu at July 04, 2011 10:03 PM (kaalw)

use like pcv pipe from the barrel, then use the soaker hose only where you want watered.. where your plants will be. You also want to make sure and have a good screen between the barrel and pcv pipe to keep out leaves a crap. The garden would have to be lower then the barrel so you have a incline in the pipe to soaker hose.

ThereÂ’s an incredible amount of swashbuckling packed into the last hour of the movie, and it mostly feels exhilarating instead of exhausting. Much of it comes from good-guy Autobot leader Optimus Prime, voiced by the redoubtable Peter Cullen, who has been doing this character for longer than most of the audience has been alive. Optimus is such a likable character that he should have a career beyond the Transfomers films. Based on box-office returns, I think he could open a rom-com better than Tom Hanks at this point. Hook him up with Sandra Bullock playing a lady trucker coming off a hard divorce, who climbs into the wrong Peterbilt at a truck stop one night and begins the ride of her life, and I think youÂ’d have the perfect date movie.
It's funny 'cause it's true.

After the celebration here. The final reports of the rocket's red glare echo across the San Fernando foothills and I am sitting here reporting this to my few M&M's still on watch. The day was spent as it should be, friends, family, BBQ, kids having a good ol' time keeping cool in da pool. Talk was simple, easy and slow amongst my friends no heated debates this day. Just simple catching up, enjoying the company commenting on the heat of the day and Dave telling about his trip to Texas and what a show we would all have tonight with his pyrotechnic grabs from the Lone Star State. And a show we had. The kids were in barely controlled mayhem as the adults fired off everything up to and including 100+ mortars right out in the front yard. Remember we are in LACO and right up against the hills that seem to burn up every summer, but we kept the tragectory clean and ended up in a rumble with the neighbors to the north and south as to WHO had the best BOOM-BOOM!
Quite a show...and quite a Nation.....I'm ready to fight to keep it.
Are you?

"Shah begins the book with an anecdote about her own childhood as an American visiting her relatives in India; sleeping under a bed net while her cousins sleep in the open, fearing mosquitoes, and India, and being ashamed of her fears. She notes later that, when her family hears she is writing a book about malaria, they ask her why--to them, it seems as silly as writing a book about the common cold. Shah notes this several times throughout the book--for example, explaining that many in malaria-endemic regions, people would rather use their bednets for fishing than to protect from mosquitoes, so while programs which deliver such nets can tout high numbers of bednets distributed it doesn't necessarily mean that everyone who receives one is using them correctly."
Hell, even when used properly, after you've gotten your eight hours wrapped in a net what protection will you have the 16 hours of the day?
