Overnight Open Thread - Jazz Age Edition
— Maetenloch

Welcome to the 1920's

The war to end all wars is over and now the jazz is playing, the hems are rising, and demon rum has been banished. So knock three times and say 'Johnny says hi' at the back door of the joint. It's time to grab some giggle water, dance the charles all nite with your Sheba, and everything is gonna be Jake.

Richard Fernandez: Getting to the Right of the Boom
The biggest problem with our airport security is that it's focused on finding bombs instead of the bombers. Plus security at the airport is really only a last-ditch way of stopping bombs. In the long run the only solution is to get to the left of the boom:

The process of stopping the bomb before it was emplaced is called “left of the boom”. It is a term used to describe the process of going downstream of the IED emplacement process. According to the Washington Post it was “vernacular developed by the Army in 2003: that is, to attack the bombmaking construct well before IEDs are emplaced. That involves understanding the financiers, bombmaker cells, and other aspects of this, long before a bomb appears at the roadside.”

So What's Mel Gibson Packing?
Well after Oksana Grigorieva filed for a domestic violence restraining order in July this is what he surrendered to police:

-- A blue steel, semi-auto 9 millimeter Glock handgun
-- A blue steel, semi-auto 9 millimeter Beretta handgun
-- A blue steel, semi-auto 12 gauge Benelli shotgun
-- A blue steel, lever action Winchester rifle
-- A magazine for the Glock
-- A magazine for the Beretta
-- A speed loader for the Glock

Two of the Gosselin Kids Have Been Expelled From School
Apparently for acting out and 'rage issues'. They're now being homeschooled by their mother. Allow me to point out that if they had been adopted by wolves as I suggested, bad words and mocking other kids wouldn't be a problem today.

L.A. County passes sweeping ban on plastic bags
November 17, 2010

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to ban plastic grocery bags in areas of the county under its jurisdiction, endorsing a broadly worded measure that proponents hope could become a model for California.

The ban, which goes beyond ordinances adopted in Malibu and San Francisco, most directly affects 1.1 million people who live outside the county's incorporated cities. But anyone shopping at stores in such areas would encounter the new rules.

Opponents suggested they might go to court to try to block the ban before the first phase takes effect in July, when 67 large supermarkets and pharmacies must stop providing disposable plastic bags. By January 2012, the ban will cover 1,000 stores throughout the county. The ordinance also seeks to keep shoppers from turning to paper bags as an alternative by requiring stores to levy a 10-cent surcharge per paper bag.

The 3-1 vote was partisan, with the three Democrats—Yaroslavsky, Gloria Molina and Mark Ridley-Thomas—supporting it. It was opposed by Republican Michael D. Antonovich; Don Knabe, also a Republican, was absent.

The county's ban is a significant victory for environmental groups, which suffered a major defeat in Sacramento in August with the failure of the state Senate to pass a sweeping plastic bag ban. It failed amid heavy and costly lobbying by plastic bag manufacturers despite winning the support of the state Assembly and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

L.A. County's decision to go forward with a ban may leave shoppers confused and cause headaches for supermarket chains. Without a statewide ban in place, chains will have to ask customers in unincorporated areas to pay for bags or bring their own, even as shoppers in cities such as Los Angeles, Pasadena and Long Beach can continue to expect free disposable bags.

I think tomorrow people will be talking more about the fact that Willow Palin went on facebook and called some kid from her school a "f *** ot" for mocking her Mom's reality show.

Never mind the grammar. Here's the quote--

"Haha your so gay. I have no idea who you are, But what I've seen pictures of, your disgusting ... My sister had a kid and is still hot."  "Tre stfu. Your such a f**got."

Bean Concedes to Walsh

Tea Party favorite wins by roughly 300 votes
Updated 8:37 PM CST, Tue, Nov 16, 2010

Republicans get to add another red seat to Congress.

Following the completion of ballot counting, Democratic Rep. Melissa Bean on Tuesday night called her Republican challenger, Joe Walsh, and conceded the race for Illinois' 8th Congressional District. Roughly 300 votes separated the two candidates.

"This is a huge win for all the grassroot organizations that supported Walsh," the Palatine Tea Party said in a release.  "Against all odds we defeated incumbent Melissa Bean (D) who had significantly more money and media support. This will be the upset of 2010."

Bean has held the seat since 2004 when she defeated Republican Rep. Phil Crane.  Walsh's victory means the state's 19-member congressional delegation will have 11 Republicans, contributing to the state's first GOP majority for Illinois in seven years.

289 Upset! High-scoring Brandy axed from 'Dancing'

(AP) – 18 minutes ago

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Brandy earned a perfect score for her Argentine tango on Monday's "Dancing With the Stars," only to learn Tuesday it would be her final dance in the competition.

The 31-year-old singer and actress was eliminated from the hit ABC dance-off just before next week's final showdown for the mirrorball trophy.

She was speechless when host Tom Bergeron said she would be leaving the show. Professional dancer Derek Hough, who is headed to the finals with his celebrity partner Jennifer Grey, didn't hide his surprise at her dismissal: His jaw dropped.

Brandy, who collected 57 points out of 60 on Monday, was pitted against Bristol Palin, who earned 53 points, for a spot in the finals.

Judges' scores are combined with viewer votes to determine which couple is ousted each week.

Hey Brandy, now you know what a Republican senate candidate feels like...

335 For what it's worth (which isn't much), there was polling in '06 that had him easily defeating Sanders which is why the NRSC kept pressing him to jump in (& never succeeding).

Douglas was smarter than they were.  Not a single Democrat seat fell in 2006 (to my knowledge, the only time in the history of American politics this has ever happened), and Vermont sure as hell wasn't going to be the exception.

In an open-seat situation, yes, Douglas might very well have a chance.  But he'd be the underdog.  Vermont is just too blue.  Even Brian Dubie had commanding polling leads for governor earlier this year.

Boy, the way Glen Miller played. Songs that made the hit parade.
Guys like us, we had it made. Those were the days.
Didn't need no welfare state. Everybody pulled his weight.
Gee, our old LaSalle ran great. Those were the days.
And you know who you were then, girls were girls and men were men.
Mister, we could use a man like Herbert Hoover again.
People seemed to be content. Fifty dollars paid the rent.
Freaks were in a circus tent. Those were the days.
Take a little Sunday spin, go to watch the Dodgers win.
Have yourself a dandy day that cost you under a fin.
Hair was short and skirts were long. Kate Smith really sold a song.
I don't know just what went wrong. Those Were The Days.

366 Taking a leaf from The Joker in The Dark Knight:

A Muslim woman gives birth by C-section.  The surgeon implants a bomb into the space vacated by the baby and sews her up.  She goes home and heals up for six weeks or so.  Then she gives the baby to her mother or sister and heads to the airport.

Depending on the detonator tech, how would anyone ever find that at the airport screening?

I think he's much more careful than his father and she's more grounded than his mother. The British press is still going gaga about how unfair it was to keep everyone waiting for 8yrs ( "Waity Katie" ), but I think it shows that Prince William is trying not to repeat his father's mistakes. Kate is also a commoner with some royal blood, so he was allowed to choose his own bride. The Queen looked happy and not irritated, so I think it's a good sign. Could be wrong, but they seem to have better chances.

Interesting is a separate point.  "Does it belong on the History Channel" is the bigger point.  I find Ancient Aliens interesting too, just to hear their stupid arguments and when they occasionally had real historians on to say their theories are a load of shit.  My favorite is when they show the Egyptian toy and it has wings and they claim that its obviously based on an alien craft that actually flew during the times of ancient Egypt.  I'm just sitting there looking at it thinking, "gee that looks an awful lot like a bird"

I once explained the show to my friends that if in 10,000 years people discovered kids stuff animals and actually believed that creatures that looked just like them actually existed in our time.

Which is too bad. Cause the History Channel used to have some great shows. I really like their Conspiracy theory which did a good job of debunking a lot of the carzy theories that are associated with such events as Kennedy's Assassination, Lincoln's assassination and 9-11.

I liked their expose on Secret Nazi Vibrators of WW II.

Werner Von Braun's  V-4 Bunny was interesting, but it was fueled by ersatz synthetic gasoline. Actually, a little known fact concerning the V-4 Bunny , the Fischer-Tropsch process was invented to fuel that dildo because the the Germans couldn't reach the Caucaus oil fields to supply enough dildo fuel to the women of germany.

In a nation that still HAS royals, pomp and circumstance are required. Besides, wouldn't they be blowing all that money on services that employee people? Folks like caterers and drivers and florists and hotel staff could probably do with a bit of royal dough right about now.

It only happens such as this about once every twenty years or so... A big event it must be!

426 438 True. Still, I think I wouldÂ’ve chosen a different ring, but that was very frugal of him I guess. Maybe it has happy memories for him of his mother. I donÂ’t know, I think if my mother died tragically seeing her ring every day on my spouse would get to me. But, IÂ’m not British so what do I know.

From what I've seen, William and Harry have a tendency to keep certain things that belonged to their mother and even give them as presents. Saw an article from when they went to Africa and Harry did something similar (can't remember what the object was). It's something the Queen would do more than Charles*, so maybe she encouraged that.

The monarchy equals tradition and works well in certain countries. The magic of royalty is also appealing to some people, though when you read about it you'll find there's nothing magical about it (sorry, George V).

As for the state of the current British monarchy, I think the British republicans are sore due to Charles poor behavior, but even they admit that a good monarch is a great thing to have. So, I'm not sure how much they really want to abolish the Crown.

While in Bengal to see what comfort he could offer in times of inter-communal violence in the run-up to independence, Gandhi called for his 18-year-old grandniece Manu to join him – and sleep with him. "We both may be killed by the Muslims," he told her, "and must put our purity to the ultimate test, so that we know that we are offering the purest of sacrifices, and we should now both start sleeping naked."

That must be remnants of the storm we had earlier this week, or at least something like it. The rain was so heavy and the clouds so think that it was dark by 4pm.

I have some fond memories of that paper.... used it as the focal point of my 6th grade social studies project on newspapers.  Built a big triptych (sp?), put together lots of charts and diagrams, compared and contrasted USA Today with conventional papers, etc.

Yes, I thought USA Today was a great idea, the apotheosis of the newspaper industry.  I was also eleven years old.

Berserker.   I LOVE guitars.  I play every single day of my life.

I own 22 guitars.   They are like pets to me.   I have them insured.

If they burned, I could go search for new pets.  But it would hurt like hell emotionally.

Neil Young is beyond LIBTARDISH.   He doesn't get much sympathy from me.   His LIB-LIKE-RELIGIOUS-OBSESSION  with all things PC.   DEVOURED HIS OWN GUITARS.

Neil Young is a walking talking singing, CONSUMING, GIGANTIC, CARBON FOOT PRINT.

Words of wisdom per Red Green:

Remember, you may have to grow old, but you don't have to mature.

There's only two things that excite a man, expensive toys and real expensive toys.

Men are like gas, they take up the space available.

If a person could find a better way to kill bugs, they would not only get rich, they'd probably get a lot more dates.

one from Reg Hunter

"Vegetarian" is an old Indian word meaning "I don't hunt so good."

758 A couple more from Red:

When the going gets tough, switch to power tools.

Some men look at a problems  and try to find a solution. I prefer to figure out whose fault it is and let them take care of it.

761 Good Morning Morons

Ah, the 20s. Flappers, bathtub gin etc etc etc. One wonders how much of that is pure hype from the media. I know having lived through the 60s that the "love and peace hippie" crap was all a totally exaggerated hype fest by the media. I know that in small town GA where I grew up the 60s were pretty much like the 50s. People worked, joined the military, and graduated from school without all the crap.

I suspect that it was the same thing with the 20s. In fact if you go to shorpy and look at pictures from the South for the 20s you will find that there was very little in the way of joy and dancing with the flappers. In fact, in those days children still worked in the garment mill sweat shops and the mines of Appalachia.

Life was filled with back breaking toil for most of the population.

Dammit! I know something relevant, and I'm too late! Here gores, anyway:

About 2:15 into the first 20's vid, there's seven women with long hair, standing in a row. Here in Niagara Co, NY, we know that this is a reference to people who were from here and became nationally famous back then. They were the Seven Sutherland Sisters, famous for their long hair. The women in the video don't look like sisters, and do not have long enough hair to be them (their hair went all the way to the floor), but - like I said - it's an obvious reference, since there's the seven with long hair.
