Overnight Open Thread - Last Minute Hackery Version
— Maetenloch

So genghis is out sick and none of the other blogger-types would fill in so I had to throw this ONT together at the last minute out of the scraps of lesser ONTs. You're damn right I'm grumpy. Maybe banning someone would cheer me up - any suggestions?

Zero to Ten in 90 Seconds

One little girl grows up in front of you in daily pictures taken over ten years.

And if you liked that you'll probably like Dan Hanna's time lapse video of his head taken over 17 years.

10 Hilarious Movie Scenes
They're all good, but I think this one is my favorite. Although I do love the fucking Catalina Wine Mixer as well.

6 Hey, Racefan!  Nobody knows the *extremely tardy* ONT has been posted  yet.  I do have a problem, Maet, if you're listening, with having to look at all manner of fabulous fast food that I don't currently have here in front of me to stuff in my face.  And I would.  Oh, yes, indeedy, I would.

Since I've had a few belts of whiskey, a nice dinner (no not meatloaf), I'd like to thank Maet for the work he puts in here at AOS.

I figure it's fitting because of his OT duty, and I haven't kissed his ass in 2 or 3 months.

Thank You Makers Mark.

Agreed. I saw it once in the theater, which was OK, and a year later on DVD at a Christmas party. Twice in one lifetime is more than enough. (And I was never much of a Farrell fan to begin with. There seems to be an unpleasant weirdness under the surface).

Thinking back to what their hamburgers were like in the early '80s, I think you're right.  'Course, I was a little kid at the time and not all that discriminating, especially when their "Dukes of Hazzard" Happy Meals came in cool molded-plastic containers shaped like the General Lee.  With "01" decals for the doors and everything.  But the burgers themselves.... yeah, they're better now.

The F-22 is to the F-15 what the F-35 is to the F-16. One's the supreme dogfighter of the world - the other is its multirole sidekick.... just as the F-15/16 fought side-by-side in Desert Shield/Storm. The 15 and 16 together have guaranteed 40 years of US air dominance.

The problem is that the F-35 is turning into a boondoggle.  Also, different services have different requirements that can't all be met with one jack of all trades craft.  The Marines and Navy may need the F-35 due to space issues, but the Air Force would be better served by having a dedicated air superiority fighter and a set of multirole fighters to serve for close air support, ISR and secondary air to air duties.

201 The problem is that the F-35 is turning into a boondoggle.

Every 7 years or so, I eat some Wendy's food and "re-discover" that not only do I not like it all that much but that it disagrees with me to boot.

Except for this summer...

I got some sort of a meal deal and the burger was (of course) total FAIL but the fries were AMAZING!

I think that I even commented on the ONT thread about how great they were.

I can't imagine what they could possibly be doing that is so different from every other fast food chain in the world but the end product was almost a damn revelation compared to every other order of fries I have ever 'et.

Eh, ok... but if that's the plan, I wouldn't stop at 400 Raptors. 781 was the original request, so that's my floor. Plus, the ANG already flies a bunch of F-16s. Not saying they can't use more, but F-35As would make a lot of sense there.

so I went and saw 3 houses on Thursday
one was a total dump - the foundation had settled so much, walking through it I almost got seasick

so I gotta keep looking, I guess

Independence Day 2: Oh No You Ditt'n

Plot summary: The aliens are fully aware of the task force they sent to Earth, having watched the entire debacle unfold live on alien cable news networks.

Seeing their ships and troops taken out by rodents enrages them & they send a revenge task force 10 times as big, back to our solar system and Death Star the entire planet. Total screen time: 10 minutes.

419 Have inflammatory bowel disease?  That's okay, go eat worms!

Parasitic worms are known to modulate the human host's intestinal immune response, in order to promote their survival in what would otherwise be a hostile environment. Now, some researchers think that worms can be used therapeutically for inflammatory bowel disease, and these researchers has also come up with a mechanistic explanation for this apparent benefit.

Writing in Science Translational Medicine, researchers at New York University and the University of California San Francisco describe a patient with ulcerative colitis who deliberately infected himself with the worm parasite Trichuris trichiura under their supervision.

It's kind of a cool looking move especially if you have a partner who knows how to "follow" but can get out of control.

433 Beware the "spinners" though...

It's kind of a cool looking move especially if you have a partner who knows how to "follow" but can get out of control.

(Yeah, laugh all you want.  Not so funny when some midshipman gets too enthusiastic and ends up breaking two of your toes by stomping on them!  Centripetal, centrifugal, whatever! )

GAH!  My biggest peeve is seeing guys trying to show off at a social dance.  The trick is to stick to the basics unless you have a lot of experience or confidence in your partner.

Besides, BYU has an excellent ballroom dance group, IIRC.

There is no cure for the gene itself.  Like the Scarecrow, they need a brain.

With the discovery that, potentially, fully differentiated cells can be converted to other cell types, it may be possible to convert fat cells full of bong resin to brain tissue...it's so crazy that it might work!

This is actually happening in many schools

Posted by: kbdabear at December 03, 2010 09:38 PM (vdfwz)

452 They've banned PE.

No, they just made it a federal requirement that all children get some unreasonable number minutes of PE a week.  Even if they're playing interscholastic sports, or doing farm chores, or any number of school or family activities that provide enough exercise.  The school district in my hometown had to have a bond issue to build a third gymnasium, because there aren't enough hours in the school day to get all students, 4K-12 that many minutes of PE in two gymnasiums.  Hysterically, there was no place to build it near the schools, so they're going to bus kids out to the edge of town for PE, even the ones going out for sports, which hovers around 80% of the high school.  WTF. There is no need for federal involvement on that level (even if it was funded with federal dollars, which it shouldn't be).  There just isn't.

(PE is where I learned to hate my body.  I'd have a bit of empathy for M'Shell if she wasn't projecting her self-loathing onto everyone else.)

I hated PE in middle school, except when I got to play softball and flag football. Flag football rocked. 10 minute runs sucked, though. You had to run 3 laps to get an A. I think 3 laps was a mile. On the NASA arsenic story; local paper headline for it:

Second genesis on Earth?

That is a bit of a stretch.  In that story, the authors admit they couldn't eliminate all of the phosphates from their growth media, so its possible the bacteria are still using phosphate for growth, albeit in a reduced role.

Also, I would like to know the phylogenetic tree of these bacteria.  If the progenitor bacteria used phosphates, then the arsenic incorporation is merely a unique adaptation rather than a whole new "genesis".

Correct.  That the Atacameno people have been exposed to arsenic for generations doesn't give them protection against the skin lesions seen in populations recently exposed to higher amounts of arsenic via their water supply.   The money quote:

Based on the present study, the prevalence, if not the severity, of skin lesions among Atacameño people exposed to arsenic in drinking water may be as high as in the various populations in the world where the use of arsenic-contaminated drinking water commenced in recent years.

520 In re PE and fat fuckin' kids nowadays:

Little Deety:  Mooom! I missed my bus!  I'm gonna be late for school!

Deety's Mom:  You sure are gonna be!

LD:  I know, let's go!

DM: Get a hustle on then, I'm not stopping you.  It's barely over a mile, it will probably take you a half hour to walk there.

LD: What?!  You're not going to drive me?

DM:  No, I am not going to drive you.  You're 11 years old and that's old enough to suffer the consequences of your perpetual dawdling in the mornings.  Your little brother hates school and yet somehow he managed to catch his bus this morning, didn't he?

LD:  But it's January!  And snowy and cold outside!

DM: That's why I assume you will be walking.  On your bike, I bet it would take you 15 minutes, tops.

*30 min. later... Little Deety grumbling to herself and feeling very put upon, looks up through the blizzard to see the Principal waiting outside the dead quiet front entrance of the school.  Gulp!*

I was such a little kiss-ass "good-girl" as a kid I couldn't imagine anything worse than being late to school unless it were "having to go to the Principal's office" (that was my brother's bag).  I just about crapped myself when I saw him waiting outside for tardy students (like me!).

Looking back, I'm pretty sure that my Mom called the school as soon as I sullenly trudged off, explaining my imminent tardiness and that the Principal bundled up and kept a look out for me about 10 min. before my ETA.

School dodgeball goes to court in New York

But the game is also being targeted as unfair, exclusionary, and warlike for school-age youngsters; some schools in Maine, Maryland, New York, Virginia, Texas, Massachusetts and Utah have banned dodgeball, or its variations, including war ball, monster ball and kill ball.

/Warlike?  WTF?  But I do love the other names for the dodgeball variants - war ball, monster ball, and kill ball.

That even though real scientists who are into politics have stated repeatedly that sea ice is NOT disappearing. Note that they changed the text to "projected" this time.

The federal government on Friday proposed listing two seals that depend on sea ice as threatened species because of the projected loss of ice from climate warming.

It is truly time for zero budget in some of these worthless federal agencies. NOAA has become so politicized over this AGW scam that its entire mission has been trashed. We need to just get rid of it.

600 Republicans are likely to "make a deal" with the commies in the Senate to get a two year delay on the Obama tax hike.

Fine by me.

If this is what it takes to let the fuck-tards in Congress who constantly try to foment "class -warfare"  to save some face, I'm for it!

I'm not sure that raising the tax rates won't prove to be disastrous, 2 years from now.

I know that raising rates on the rates on "the rich" come January 1st, 2011 will most certainly screw me out of some jobs.

601 Think not paying your mortgage and still keeping your house is something new? Think again. Here is a woman in FL who hasn't made a mortgage payment in 25 years but has successfully fended off foreclosure.

http://tinyurl.com/2cz3tvk

It appears she was able to do this for three reasons; (1) FL has some laws which favor deadbeats and (2) lenient judges have expanded those laws in her favor and (3) the banks and mortgage companies have been really sloppy in her case.

What I find funny is that the mortgage companies and banks have been fighting this for 25 years using high paid lawyers. The house is valued at about 200K so the outstanding mortgage can't be much higher than that.

They have probably paid out millions in attorney fees. They would have been better off just "giving her permission" to live there and repossessing the house when she dies.

Some are saying that we may actually be heading into a new ice age now and all the evidence is actually pointing that way. That is when you sample real weather stations and not the fraudulent crap NOAA pushes.

605 The articles I have seen based their findings on the sun's output going into a decline as well as actual measured temperatures declining.

But if you look at drudge right now you'll see the newspapers in the UK are blaming their current blizzard conditions on AGW.  I think Europe as well as the U.S. and South America has had record low temperatures for the past three Winters now. We have also had very mild Summers three years running.

When you have that it is no longer weather, it is climate.

Posted by: Vic at December 04, 2010 02:23 AM (e4sSD)

606 and they get warming from that? ...

When you have that it is no longer weather, it is climate.

200 years is weather, 10,000 years is climate.

No the UK newspapers were saying the cold weather is due to AGW, not the articles I was referencing that said we may be in for a new ice age.

And I disagree on the time frame for "climate". The last mini-ice age did not last that long. Which brings up another topic.

One wonders if the general public know what an absolute disaster another "mini-ice age" would produce?

607 Damn, I had a long post going about the latest from Nikki Haley hit the wrong damn key and lost it all.

Posted by: Vic at December 04, 2010 02:45 AM (e4sSD)

608

Good article at NRO doing an interview with Nikki Haley:

Nikki Haley Rolls Up Her Sleeves

One of her proposed actions that will address the concerns Deety had about the small business tax increase is elimination of the corporate income tax in SC. If she does that, and because SC is a right to work State, businesses will flock to SC.

“People have lost faith in Congress, and it’s up to the governors to really step up and show what good reforms are,” Haley says. “You will see me fight to eliminate the corporate-income tax in our state. We are already a right-to-work state. If we can eliminate the corporate-income tax, we will be a magnet for companies that want to move here.”

She will have one major hurdle though and it is something I have been bitching about for a long time.

Republicans currently hold a 75- to 48-seat majority in the state House and a 27-to-19-seat majority in the state Senate. Most governors would be thrilled with those numbers, but HaleyÂ’s aspirations go beyond simple partisan advantage.

“I’m not going to settle for a Republican House, a Republican Senate, and a Republican governor,” Haley says. “It’s about a conservative House, a conservative Senate, and a conservative governor. It doesn’t matter how many Republicans seats you take if you don’t have
conservative seats. So we have to watch the officials being elected.”

We got those Republican majorities not by electing conservative Republicans. We got them by turn-tail Democrats switching Parties when it became apparent that Democrats were no longer going to be elected in most parts of SC. So when they switched did they change their voting ways?

Hell no! If anything they became worse. This State has become even more tax and spend than it was in the past. My sales tax (which is their latest whipping boy) has gone from 3% when I first moved here in 1977 to 8.5% on most stuff and 10.5% on pre-packaged/cooked food. And on top of that, they are talking about raising it, the gasoline tax, and any other tax they can get their hands on to get out of the current budget mess. In short, they are just like the Democrat “deficit commission”.

The idea of cutting socialist programs just doesnÂ’t come up on their radar at all.  Note that Haley recognizes that the SC legislature is full of RINOs above. I call them FDR Republicans and we need to get them out. They are a plague.

But I guess Haley is a “purity” Republican.

Yes, remember the "year without Summer". We had snow in June in CT and frosts every month of the year in parts of the NE.

Of course if you look it up now all those old articles you used to read about the mini-ice age have been revised now to blame the entire thing on volcanic activity.

Never mind that we had had volcanic activity may more times in the past and since then without that kind of freezing weather.

But the AGW commies have always got some kind of glib explanation for it. They never make sense on the surface but they spout it like it was the gospel according to St. Peter and call us "deniers".

We already had bad times agriculturally due to the mini-ice age. The year without Summer put the cap on it.

But I guess the Russians loved it. That is what killed Napoleon (the ice age).

The supposed Republican didn't even respond to that.  This is what I hate about the "fair and balanced" debates. Fox rarely gets someone who actually fights this kind of shit.

Where was the real response. This "investment" was mandated by the damn courts and what should happen is all the parents and kids be deported.

Also the commie says "CBO" has scored this as saving money. No response there either. Other studies says it will cost us billions on top of billions.

And it is all there for one reason. More drones to vote for Democrats.

616 But I guess the Russians loved it. That is what killed Napoleon (the ice age).

Those Russian winters and Hitler's timing as well.

Back in the day, when wars or battles were promised to be won within weeks or months, always before Christmas, troops beginning campaigns in the spring--the French Empire Army of 1812 in Russia clad in spring uniforms, our Revolutionary and Civil War volunteers ill clad for the duration in the elements, the Nazi force invading the Russian front in the spring, our forces stuck in the Battle of the Bulge and later in Korea without proper winter gear.

That's one thing to hand our Military Industrial Complex today given the newly devised never ending wars with never ending supplies and newly fabricated insulating uniforms, heavy in the Iraq desert. Afghanistan's a nasty bitch of terrain and climate, just the place to sell and utilize all the newly invented gimmicks.

Now for the inevitable showdown there overhead given all the time in the world. It isn't as if the Taliban are hurting for Iranian alliance. Trick is, who's going to pilot Islamic purchased Russian fighter T-50s? Russian pilots? Will we live to witness a newly devised Russian satellite/allied nation in Afghanistan after all? hm

628 Russian pilots were flying Egyptian jets in that conflict.

I remember.

As per US/Russia ending the "cold war", the more things change the more they stay the same.

There are Russian trained pilots who'd be better paid as mercenaries by rich Islamic nations. Putin might even formally assign training of his elite pilots in contracted service abroad in Islam. And the Islamic overlords will spin their own propaganda that Russia is no longer the USSR enemy when conniving the to-be alliance amongst their people, as if Islamic authoritarians give a rat's ass what their subjects think or feel about a damned thing, the Afghanistani population in particular. As long as great satan US exists, there's the rallying point for all enemies of that enemy. Putin has his cake and eats it as well. Unlike Americans, Democrats in particular, at least Putin knows hard-nosed with a cherry on top Islamic diplomacy given his singular policy Russian foremost agenda.

Using the Freedom of Information Act, our investigators obtained documents from the Obama Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) regarding a series of three Medicare television advertisements featuring actor Andy Griffith, which were deemed misleading by a number of press outlets, including the nonpartisan (but left-of-center)FactCheck.org."

631 One wonders if the general public know what an absolute disaster another "mini-ice age" would produce?

Few crops to feed the massive population.

Inability to repair the power grid network given old and downed lines everywhere and no power to replace under impaired circumstances. Places that bury their lines will at least be insulated from the ice, but of what avail if disconnected from the power distribution center and source?

Japan has been publishing satellite research regarding massive weather manipulations via stimulated tectonic activity, simply to note even skeptically to file in memory for recall. Worst case, what avail would solar power be without access to the sun?

Whether a mini-ice age depleting crops and/or long lasting drought, it would seem that the globalist overlord eugenicists can wipe out the undesired populations via starvation without the long term mess of biological, volcanic or nuclear mishaps.

For all that it should be v. what it is, the HHS needs the ax.

HHS began merely collecting statistics since none really existed prior. But it was without authority to mandate anything other than enforcing epidemic carrying homes closed and isolated until occupants were well. It could encourage treatments, as with TB and polio, but not force people to accept vaccinations.

ObamaCare would mandate every human subject to healthy/unhealthy "preemptive health care measures" to enhance eugenics while pharmaceuticals profit regardless of product safety. Try telling the government mandated doctorPA that you're allergic to a particular medication that is mandated prescribed for your own good. [That sort of informative explanation per unique individual citizen works wonders with TSA agents who "must" perform according to obtuse standards.]

636 The last mini-ice age is said to be responsible for ...

One good thing that the last mini-ice age produced was the American Revolutionary War's victory, only because our founding patriots endured the unendurable, barefoot and ill clad marching and campaigning with no insulation during THOSE winters while the British/Prussian forces awaited spring, our patriots diving into frozen rivers to retrieve lost cannon crossing the ice for battles and retreats. God bless their souls.  If they can and will, I pray they work hard upon the hearts and minds of Americans today. From them, I'll take the directive to buck up. We owe them.

THAT is what we owe ourselves, constitutional governance. Not the politicians' collective debt that never maintained our public works infrastructure last built by Ike, or our social security funds forcibly withheld to be returned upon retirement. Who owes what to the Obamarx and an authoritarian Congress further corrupted by "social justice" perverted activist courts directing our destruction even within our PC Military?

641 Since it looks like there won't be a top headlines thread here's the latest news on WikiLeaks:

PayPal Freezes WikiLeaks Account

In potentially the most significant attack on WikiLeaks to date, PayPal on Friday froze the account of the German foundation accepting donations for the secret spilling website, claiming that WikiLeaks was in violation of PayPalÂ’s terms of service.

“PayPal has permanently restricted the account used by WikiLeaks due to a violation of the PayPal Acceptable Use Policy, which states that our payment service cannot be used for any activities that encourage, promote, facilitate or instruct others to engage in illegal activity,” reads a statement on PayPal’s website. “We’ve notified the account holder of this action.”

Most of the over $1 million in contributions WikiLeaks has drawn in the last year have come through its PayPal account, which belongs to the Wau Holland Foundation, a German non-profit group that manages the bulk of WikiLeaksÂ’ money.

Attempting to donate to Wau Holland though PayPal on Friday night produced the message “This recipient is currently unable to receive money.”

Shortly after the State Department info began leaking Hillary announced this is her last public office. Coincidence? (oops! that's a second question). But at the same time the info reflects very poorly on Obama.

648 Ed Anger on Wikileaks

Everyone has a lot to lose with Wikileaks. But the meager Congressional wrist slap to come won't happen without bipartisanship. And look out since Congress only knows how to amass itself more unconstitutional powers "for our own good" ignoring the obvious infringements upon due process, ignoring law enforcement because "comprehensive legislative reform packages" suit the corrupt bastards power grab in the name of "security".

The squeaky wheel gets the oil. "Who counts" includes Republicans slow on the draw, asleep at the wheel, who'd better sharpen the points of law on the House and Senate Floors and in committees.

Quit awaiting a proper response about anything including Wikileaks from the Left that lacks common decency when national security is sacrificed in their power grab to knock out the Right. They think that no matter, America is invulnerable to total collapse since there's always fresh meat given illegal immigration; but if the worst comes, that they'll be on top the heap.

Political magnetic poles are shifting, the first being last and visa versa.

Meanwhile, the Right is redefining "responsibility" with the platform CUT SPENDING BY DELETING FUNDING TO SOCIALIST BUREAUCRACIES AND MANDATED PROGRAMS en route to eliminating entire federal departments better directed at state/local levels.

Fred Thompson's initial Monday response to this wiki-round pooh-poohed the brouhaha radical kneejerk reaction from Democrats caught with their collective pants down in diddlysquat posture.

Subsequently at the end of the week, his guest, a journalist ethicist, went on about ethics required to supersede the law that has no teeth requiring journalistic RESPONSIBILITY towards national security v. exposure of the highest degree of governmental vaudeville exploits. Profit entered the discussion, not as evil but as a motivation with less stature than accepting responsibility for our nation's denigration. She rationaled that the law is malleable. Heck, ETHICS are transitory, and not being written, leaving ethics all the more malleable than application/disregard for constitutional law, and all the more malleable yet than unconstitutional law (by nature awaiting to be overturned--don't hold your breath).

Fred didn't call her on that, being at the end of her segment on air. /So I did for him now. Fred can thank me now with a gold coin./
