Overnight Open Thread - Merry F'n Christmas Edition [Rajiv Vindaloo]
— Open Blogger

Per Genghis:

I'm having a PC meltdown tonight (something screwy with the BIOS).

Obviously, this is God's way of telling Genghis to not take any face time away from the baby Jesus tonight.

However, being a miserable agnostic, I can safely ignore such celestial interventions and fill your screens with crap.

Merry f'n Christmas everybody!

(I moved the Christmas video after the jump because CDR M reminded me it has a naughty word in it. And we run a clean, family-oriented ship around these parts, by gum. To prove it, here's somebody's grandmother making Christmas dinner that I found on Webshots.)

Is that a toque? No matter, it's still wholesome, even if Canadian.

Still Need a Last-Last-Minute Christmas Present? Give the Gift of a Home Colonoscopy!

Introducing the USB Home Endoscope. It claims to be "plug & play" (huh huh) and to have a "flexible design" (uh huh huh huh).

I shall name him ... the iCouric.

It provides a 640x480 image, which is about where digital cameras were circa 1994. Obviously, anal photography has much room to grow.

More holiday cheer after the jump... That Disgusting, Filth-Ridden Christmas Video I Referenced Above That Used to Be on the Front Page But Now Isn't

Speaking of 640x480 Digital Cameras from 1994...

This is one of the first entries in the consumer digital camera market. And it has an Apple logo on it.

The QuickTake 100. It wasn't quick and didn't let you take much.

As you can see, it's the size of a pair of binoculars. At 640 x 480, it produced pictures of a whopping 1/3 of a single megapixel. And with a generous 1MB of flash memory, it could store fully eight of those hi-res beauties at one time. (By comparison, a top-end iPhone 4 comes with, uh, 32,000 times as much memory, and its camera, which is not exactly considered state-of-the-art, is 5 megapixels and can take video as well.)

All for $1070 in 2009 dollars.

Over the next couple years, Apple put out improved models. But needless to say, you can tell by looking at it that it's the sort of thing that would make Steve Jobs want to punch walls. The moment he regained sweet, sweet ironfisted control of the company, he killed the QuickTake program and never looked back.

The Best Christmas Song You've Probably Never Heard

Sherwin Sleeves is the alter ego of Sean Hurley. No, I don't know who Sean Hurley is either, but he makes some great old-man-in-a-cabin-in-the-woods music. He does lots of songs for Opie & Anthony and Ron & Fez on Sirius XM. Ever since I first heard this last year, I've never been able to get it out of my head.

A Very Brady Meaty Christmas

I really don't know what this is, except that this guy throws a metric bleepton of bacon on the table while screaming "Bacon! Bacon! Bacon!" over and over, which is really about the only hurdle one needs to clear for inclusion in an AoS ONT. Also, CDR M emailed it to me, so if you think it's weird, it's all his fault.

Surprisingly, This Video Has No Meat In It Whatsoever

Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you the Official Lady Gaga 2010 Christmas Video, featuring Beyonce! Except that by "official," I mean "somebody made it in his basement with a five-year-old copy of Windows Media Maker," and it doesn't appear to have anything to do with Beyonce. But again, CDR M sent it to me, so I pass the savings on to you.

And Finally, A Heartwarming Holiday Story From Iraq: What Should Be Done With This 600-Page Quran Written Entirely in Saddam Hussein's Own Blood?

It took over two years and more than seven gallons. And you have to wonder how he was ever able to part with it, given how bloodythirsty he was. *rimshot*

Anyway, the Iraqis can't decide whether it's worth untold millions of dollars or if it should be taken out back and burned. There also seems to be some question of possible eternal damnation hanging over all their heads.

My conclusion? Bush's fault.

"I do not understand. Why is all the ink green?"

Merry Boxing Day Eve, everybody!

13 Sadly, the home endoscopy scope has been manufactured because a market study somewhere indicated it would sell. Maybe folks will at last hold off at Christmas and wait for, I don't know, maybe Valentine's Day. Or, St. Patrick's Day. Whichever involves the most alcohol.

Did you see the South Park Christmas card? You can go find it yourself if you're curious. Jesus will hate me if I link it.

Scientists study post-election habits of Morons, with predictable results:

Voting for the winning candidate makes guys want to watch pornography, a study suggests.

Building on past studies of testosterone levels, a husband-and-wife team of psychologists examined Internet usage and found a pattern between the number of search requests for porn and the states that backed the winners in the last two presidential elections, as well as in the congressional election between them.

No mention of a possible followup study monitoring pudding sales.

So Merry Christmas, Morons.

85 82 okay so I've been doing some googling, I see that some people recommend using dental floss, small flathead screwdriver, the tip of a mechanical pencil, a sewing needle, to bend it back into place - what do you recommend?   A piece of flint, or a sharpened bone splinter.

No, but you must be reading my mind.  I bought a bunch of books on sale recently, some for our kind of people, and others, like cookbooks and whatnot, for THEM.

I'm giving my aunt...clerk of the highest state court where she lives...Levin's Men in Black instead of the wine book she was going to get.  And now I must pour another drink and ponder some other changes that need to be made.

It.  Is.  On.

so, suppose you're putting a processor into a socket, and you just accidentally bend one of the pins - is there any hope? is the pin bendable back without snapping?  or am I just boned?

1) Modern Intel chipsets are Land-Grid-Array (LGA). The pins are on the motherboard. If you bend them, they are harder to fix. But if you have a high end CPU, the motherboard is cheaper so be thankful.

2) All is not lost. Fine toothed pliers and a razor blade are your friend. The latter doubels as an antidepressant if you fail in mission one.

3) It's a royal PITA. It used to be easier but there are 1) more pins and 2) greater density so 3) less room to work with.

Conclusion: Don't bend the fucking pins.

I use a large-bore mechanical pencil , and slip the bent pin into the end where the lead comes out. Then GENTLY bend the pin straight.

OH--- I've also got three flavors of 'vodka' soaking....add about 3 pounds of fruit and 3 cups of sugar to a liter of cheap vodka--- let sit for a few weeks, taste and adjust flavor with more fruit or sugar.  Let sit for a day or two more, strain and give as gifts.  For those,  I got pretty blown glass bottle stoppers for 5 bucks.

So, seriously, Christmas rocks when you have a 5 year old. He literally hugged the Handy Manny construction set when he opened it and said "I've been wishing for this!"

Wait til he sees the bicycle Santa is bringing. He'll probably crap himself. Have the camera ready!

Evening and Merry Christmas, ya'll.

Y

Going Ann Coulter is like going nuclear around here.

A couple of years ago, some relatives of my brother-in-law came down here for the Michigan State game. I didn't go to the game, but went to the house afterwards for festivities. The relatives were both Michigan school teachers.

During a discussion on what kind of books we read, I mentioned that in addition to thrillers, I also read some political opinion. The teacher-wife babe asked me who my favorite political editorialist was. I told her Ann Coulter.

It was a telling joke, and he got killed for it.  That really pisses me off.  More motivation for the ol' conservative book bomb going off in the house of NC Ref's mom tomorrow.

I revel in the cold stares from the left. We have a hard-core PETAhead at work. I once told him my tuna sub didn't taste right. He asked me what I thought was wrong with it. My reply? "Not enough dolphin."

Yep. Cold stare.

And yep. I smiled.

340 Merry Christmas, all.  Last night was my third midnight mass here in Amman, and every time, we have visitors from the Moslem community--most often women and young people, often young couples, and when we approach them, hanging around shyly in the back, they want to talk about Christianity, and the difference they see between the joy of Christians walking out of a church, and the anger of Moslems walking out of the mosques, and they ask about baptism and its significance, and how they themselves can be baptized.  And quite often we see these people again, wearing crosses around their necks, and attending services.  And it is a joy to see.

And it is this that makes me so adamant against the there-are-no-moderate-Moslems-kill-them-all-and-let-God-sort-them-out mentality.  They are there, and we can reach them.

Nope.  A 4 and soon to be 6 year old.  They're up at the crack of dawn every day!

I was contrasting what Christmas morning use to be like when my kids were that age and how it is now at my house.  I miss the Christmas morning you're having now.

371 Yippie-ki-yay, mofos! And Merry Christmas to all!

Had the big Christmas Eve to-do at the in-laws' and with the in-laws' last night. Twenty-two people and three generations. Noisy and chaotic, but great fun. I served as the emcee / moderator / court of final authority for the greedy Santa gift exchange (i.e., I herded cats) and emerged unscathed.

Today pretty much the same cast assembles at another home to restart the chaos. It would have been our house, but the other alternate host (a brother-in-law) swapped the engagement with us last year in order to remodel his kitchen. (Whew!)

Enjoy that while you can.  They are what Christmas is made for. (On the non-religious side)

Mary was a single mother too, what do you say now, reich wing h8rz!

Nope, Mary was not a single mother.  When I was a child it was explained to me thus: Mary and Joseph were an engaged couple and it was simply assumed that they anticipated their wedding vows.

Merry Christmas one and all.

LOL, just saw CK doing that song on the old JC show. We had a Christmas thingy with my brothers where we stacked gifts and did the gift taking and stealing thing. Those came up AFTER my turn and I didn't get to steal them.

anyone else have hyper kids begging to pop open a present?

Posted by: navycopjoe at December 24, 2010 11:36 PM (uIQK6)

That would be Mrs D.

Ours never make it past Christmas Eve.  When the kids were young, we used to go to mom and dad's for Christmas, which meant we travelled Christmas Eve, so the kids opened their stuff here before we left.

Mom and Dad are gone now, and the kids have moved out, but the family tradition remains.  Presents are for Christmas Eve.
