— Maetenloch Happy Mother's Day all.

And it's not too late to send your mother a customized video naming her The 2010 Rising Mother of the year! It's pretty cool how they're able to work her name into all the videos and even create a virtual mom tattoo.
And here's a little video showing how love for mom can kinda overcome filial hate. (thanks to DPR VIII)
Biggest Cheating Day For Moms: The Monday After Mother's Day
According to ashleymadison.com their second busiest day for women signing up is the day after Mother's Day (the day after Valentines Day is the first). So treat her right on Sunday, or Sancho will on Monday.

Opium Poppies - in your back yard?
Well it turns out that the poppies people grow in gardens (Papaver somniferum) are exactly the same type as those used to produce opium. Afghan drug lords and US pharmaceutical companies just happen to use varieties that produce a slightly higher yield. But the ones you buy from Home Depot will work just fine as well. And apparently tea made from dried poppy heads is strong enough that several people have managed to OD on it.
Surprisingly it's perfectly legal to grow opium poppies just as long as they're for purely decorative uses. So when you're planting your apocalypse garden, you might want to decorate it with some poppies just in case.

Jerry Brown Use Investigations For His Campaign
California's current Attorney General, Jerry Brown, has become very fond of using his office's power to investigate to pursue his personal political aims.
In the month of April alone, Brown has launched investigations to embarrass Sarah Palin, aggressively promote union membership, clear ACORN of criminal activities, play catch-up on the Wall Street scandal by trumping up charges against Wall Street giant MoodyÂ’s, go after an oil company politically active in defeating CaliforniaÂ’s new green house gas emissions law, and grab headlines on issues ranging from home foreclosures to former child star Corey HaimÂ’s death.
The scary part is that Jerry Brown stands a decent chance of becoming CA governor again despite his well-earned 'Governor Moonbeam' record from the 70's.

6 True Stories About Disneyland They Don't Want You WTR to Know
Well there's the communal underwear and occasional lice breakout, the boobie monitoring and sweeping out human remains gigs. Plus there was the Yippie invasion in 1970 that resulted in Disneyland closing early for the first time ever.

Remember when I said IÂ’d remake you last? I lied.
For some reason Fox has decided to remake the 1985 movie Commando. Only without Arnold and his one-liners. So really what's the point of doing it?
20th Century Fox is going Commando again, setting David Ayer to write and direct a reboot of the 1985 film. Ayer is the former Navy soldier [sic] who wrote Training Day and moved into directing with the dark dramas Harsh Times and Street Kings. He will put his own real-world spin on this original premise: a retired elite special forces operative sees his daughter kidnapped and is told sheÂ’ll die unless he gets on a plane and kills the rival of a nasty exiled dictator. In the original, Schwarzenegger jumped off the plane before takeoff, and killed everyone involved in the kidnap plot, in a real beefcake turn that followed Terminator. AyerÂ’s protagonist will be less brawny, but more skilled in covert tactics and weaponry.

I read somewhere not too long ago (here?) a list of the Top 20 most deadly plants in the world and about 18 of them grow in my neighborhood. It was very surprising as I had already come to accept that the "most deadly" anything was bound to be from Australia, not suburban Florida.

The dad had the baby @ some group where they were singing with the babies. The song was about "mother Earth" and how she was going to take care of us... blah, blah, blah...
Well, the baby promptly got up and ran to the door, trying everything it could do to get out. It was hilarious.

My Ouija board met its demise after my 12th birthday slumber party. One two many 3am screams sent my Dad over the edge. He threw it out and I tried to tell him it was bad luck and he was channeling evil.
He said he was okay with taking his chances on that one.

However, my personal feelings aside, I must do my duty and give special thanks to the socks who made this possible.

Without Tony Montana, Billy Batts, Bob Bennett, Michael Barone, Jim Lehrer, David Frum, Andi and Levi, Carlhes Johanson, Daniel Son, Rio Linda, and Kitten Woods this just couldn't have happened.

I heard that Disney has a bad track record with how they treat their employees. Most famously those hired to portray the characters. Don't get sick or pass out in your costume. They just won't give a damn. And most importantly, make sure not to pull the head off lest you frighten the kidos.

I think I've mentioned this before, but when Mr. Y-not had a kidney stone attack while on a business trip, they gave him some vicodin and sent him home with the idea that he'd go see his doctor. However, an Indian scientist I knew recommended he drink barley water. We didn't have that, but we had beer (Rolling Rock, oddly enough). It worked like a charm -- the stone popped right out... and apparently wasn't painful in the process.
I'm guessing the alcohol in the beer relaxes the smooth muscle in the manly bits so there's a nice, clear channel and the other properties of beer facilitates flushing the thing out.

Fortunately, Mr. Y-not has not had a recurrence since that first one... most likely because he finally started to listen to his wife when she nags him to drink lots of fluids when he travels by airplane. He had two incidents, both while traveling. (We only realized after the fact that the first occurrence, which happened about a week before the second/final occurrence, was a kidney stone attack. He was on a trip that week, too.) It was one time that I felt totally vindicated for nagging him. He learned his lesson!

I heard that Disney has a bad track record with how they treat their
employees. Most famously those hired to portray the characters. Don't
get sick or pass out in your costume. They just won't give a damn. And
most importantly, make sure not to pull the head off lest you frighten
the kidos.
IMHO, that's BS. My oldest niece was down there for their summer college program; they got treated about as well as any retail employee. Also, talk to the cast members -- they love it. I've spoken to people who have worked for them for 20+ years as WAIT STAFF.
I won't go into my speculation as to why Disney gets bad mouthed so much; I'll come off as more of a crank than is normal 'round here. :-)
And the poor sods in the costumes have minders; if they start to get too hot, they're supposed to signal their minders to get them out of sight so they can get some cool air and water. If you'll notice, most of the places to "meet and greet" are inside now, the ones that aren't are right next to a doorway.

Well laceyunderalls, for me it was a tough decision, because I mean my God the Patrick Dempsey character took her to Tiffany after hours to pick a ring, that was some hot stuff. But, yeah, Josh Lucas was totally smoldering and the chemistry was way better between them.

Who would you choose?
Based on their faces only (I didn't find pictures of their bods), I'd go for Dempsey (I assume you mean Patrick). I like brunettes.

They call them "cast members". The story behind it is that, well, Disney was a movie studio before it was a theme park company. They viewed being out in the public at the park as being "on stage", and you were expected to be in character.
Supposedly, one day at Disneyland, Walt saw a space-suited cast member walking through Frontierland -- the only path the guy had -- so Walt decided his next park wouldn't have that problem. So they built Disney World's Magic Kingdom on top of tunnels that let people move from area to area outside of view.

There are almost always labor union employees protesting Disney. I know Disney uses union labor for stuff, too. I always tell the protesting people to fuck off. They're lucky they have jobs with perks. Don't whine to me about bad treatment when you're in a fucking union.
And that's why I think Disney gets slammed so much. Way back when, Disney was a completely "merit shop". When a CPUSA-backed union tried to organize the place, Walt resisted it. ISTR he took it personally that some people he'd bent over backwards for were trying to organize, when, if they felt like they were underpaid, they could have talked to him.
In any case, Walt noticed that BEFORE the union incident, his movies got rave reviews across the political spectrum, but AFTER, the lefties slammed them. Since then, lefties have pulled out all the stops to slam Disney on any grounds imaginable, even when the company bows to the left.

This is from a non-mother so maybe it doesn't amount to much, but I was the "far from home" daughter...
From reading your posts here I know your son loves you and you love your son. I think you should let it go. How much does it matter what he does or doesn't do to show you he loves you on a specific day or even any given week in the grand scheme of things? He's busy or he's happy or he's distracted or whatever. But he still loves you.
I know that when I got married and moved away (and this was well before the instant access afforded by internet and cell phones) there were many moments throughout the day or week or month when I missed having my mom nearby. But I had just gotten married, I was starting grad school, and we were living in the South Side of Chicago in a dingy, tiny apartment. Picking up the phone on a schedule or writing a long letter each week didn't matter.
I think my mom spent too much energy fretting over those things and in the process she became more and more demanding which just made her less accessible to me for support. We both suffered because of it, but I think she did more than I did.
Anyway, just my two cents, but it did occur to me today (while watching the ten billionth Hallmark card ad) that too much emphasis is placed on proving our love to each other on specific days - Mother's Days, wedding anniversaries, Valentines Day. It's the unexpected moments that matter, imho.
Today would have been my mom's 72nd birthday, btw. She passed away 17 years ago, when Clinton got inaugurated. (Yes, I blame him.)

I think it's okay to be a little bit petty on Mother's Day.
My hubby is a minister and his soft heart causes him to invite lost souls and stragglers to every event we have or go to (movies, out to eat, over to eat, etc). I told him that for Mother's Day, I wanted us and our kids only. No stragglers. I know it's petty, but there it is.

Walt paid me more and gave me more perks than anyone else, but in the summer of '41 I was one of the first ones out there on the picket line and wasted no time picking up a megaphone to heckle the big guy when he tried to get through the gates. He lost interest in animation and never really trusted anyone on his staff again as a result of all this, but hey, it was worth it.
It was all about the little people, you see. Had to make sure that everyone, even the revolving-door hacks with no company loyalty, got the same fair shake as the ten-year employees that gave Walt their all.
That's what liberalism is all about. Fairness.

Trust me, as a former stepmother, you will never ever be replaced. You are mom, she is a nanny.
Part of what ended my previous marriage was that I took those kids in a raised them after their drunken slut mother abandoned them at the doorstep and even as they grew into adulthood and were old enough to know better, their mom was always a fucking saint and I was the hired help. The kicker was when the step-girl got married. I planned the wedding, the rehearsals, the reception, made arrangements for the out of town visitors and my husband and I paid for it all. All mom did was show up and it was the most awesomenest thing ever!!!!
But I digress....the point is that you will always be mom, so don't sweat the stuff with the stepmom.

Not going to stay long as tomorrow's a school day for the offspring. Since it's Mother's Day, my motherly advice to 'rons with young 'uns is to never let them near hat shops at theme parks like Disney or Busch Gardens.
You wanna talk lice with the Disney performers? The school nurse said they have lice outbreaks following every spring break from kids trying on Mickey ears at D-world! Blech!
And as for the kidney stones, my dad has passed out from the pain of passing them a couple of times. His mom used to get them too. *Knocks wood* I pray to Gaia I haven't inherited them too. I have read that good advice for avoiding them is to drink a glass or two of water first thing in the morning to dilute all the salts and waste your kidneys have filtered overnight. It took a lot of work for me not to hit the coffee cup first, but you get used to it after a while.
Rant off.

I think the parks and the studio are working under different orders, so to speak. I think now the parks are better run than the corporate aspect. Maybe not, I don't know. Most complaints I hear are from corporate not the "little people" who work at the park. You don't become one of 600 maintenance and gardening crew who work in the wee hours of the morning to repaint and tend to the thousands of plants and props every single night if you don't like it.
Many of the dancers and performers in the shows move on to something bigger and better. Some even get their break at Disney. Maybe working at the park is better than working at the studio.

The difference between this and past oil spills is that this is a leak rather than a spill, with oil continuing to pour out of the earth. It's happened before, but it sure doesn't happen often. Until they can get the problem dealt with at the source -- and keep in mind that source is about 5,000 feet underwater -- there's no telling how much oil we could be talking about.
As for the environmental damage, trying to clean oil out of soggy Louisiana marshland is quite a different proposition from, say, cleaning it off rocks in Alaska. There really IS no way to get it out, other than wait decades for nature to take care of it. And in the meantime this is going to destroy commercial fishing in LA.

I don't blame BP (unless something really damning comes out about the cause of the explosion); offshore drilling always carries risks and they're actually doing something to try to stop this, while Predizzle Obizzle sits on his community-organizing ass and runs his purple fucking mouth. I do blame, in part, the government regulations on domestic drilling that are forcing nearly all of it to be done far offshore.

I think it's Disney's "diversity" thing. Notice that Brenda Song is the only Asian actress in all the current Disney shows. I think that's also why they added Doc Shaw to Suite Life on Deck. It's their "racially diverse" show.

If government could in any way be considered responsible for the levees breaking, it would be the state government of Louisiana, which over many years diverted who knows how many millions of federal dollars sent down for levee maintenance into the pet projects of the many crooks who've run the state. The fire-boom plan was a federal measure and it was the Feds who were AWOL when the plan was needed.
I absolutely blame Obama for sitting on his ass for ten days after the explosion and rabble-rousing over Arizona.

--That's right. I think GGE ranted about HR last night and I did not yet reply.
All I can say is: Yeah, there's a lot of water and it floods sometimes. However, if it were not for one of the finest natural harbors in the world the place would be as backward and obscure as, say, the Eastern Shore. Hell, even the one interstate highway goes in, circles round, then leaves. That said, it's got it well off with regard to avoiding hurricanes: very protected and while Isabel flooded my dad's basement a bit, there has not been a catastrophic hurricane since the 60s. Again, see the definition of "harbor."
Cost of living: maybe not great for servicemen, but my stepbrother still bought a house for relatively cheap a few years ago, while not making a load of money --and he had two small children to boot.
So, on balance, not awful, and not ideal for a young, restless man, but hardly hell on earth.

Memory by Donald Westlake - Can't believe this was a trunk novel as it's some of the master's best work.
The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet's Nest by Steig Larsson - Got an arc of this and it's a great way to end the series. Really wish he wasn't killed, would have loved to read more of his writing.
The Green Leopard Plague And Other Stories by Walter Jon Williams - Though he might be more known for his novels, I personally think it's the short stories where he shows his chops. Now, I've read most of these before but they got better with age.
Boneshaker by Cherie Priest - Its sad to say but this is is her coming out novel to the masses (which sucks as Not Flesh Nor Feathers was amazing). Some of her best work to date. Interesting take on steampunk with her clever southern twist to it.

Full disclosure: I'm engaged for the first time and have no kids. Kids change everything they say, but I doubt they could overcome my dislike of my ex. Just wondering.
Depends on the age of the kids. If they're not old enough to actually think of and/or do something for mother's day, then it is kind of incumbent on the father to make some sort of token effort.
If they're older, then it's his job to facilitate as best he can whatever surprise they've dreamed up.
Being married is not the same as being a parent. You can get divorced, but you're a parent forever.

If you have kids and get divorced, you're stuck dealing with your ex because of the kids. So if you can't get along, you have to at least be civil, for your kids' sake. The worst divorces I had to deal with (through a job) were the ones where the kids were used as pawns and/or the parents bad mouthed each other around the kids or within earshot.
I think it's nice of your friend to get his ex a Mother's Day gift. After all, even if she's no longer his wife, she's still the mother of his children.

C. And have you noticed that if you rearrange the
letters in "illegal immigrants" and add just a few more
letters, it spells out: "Go home you free-loading, no good,

holes
and take those other hairy-faced, sandal-wearing, bomb-making,
goat-loving, raggedy-ass camel jockey bastards with you"?

He should be glad he doesn't live in California. It would be worse, trust me.
As far as it where it ends, well, like mpur said, it depends on the age of the kids. If they're little, dad should still help pick out a gift. If they're old enough to do it themselves, then they should.
You don't say if your friend gets along with his ex. Some divorces with or without kids aren't acrimonious at all. Some people mutually decide being married wasn't right for them and get divorced without too many problems. The most acrimonious ones are the ones involving lots of money and each party has the maturity of a 2 year old.

Logprof, glad your bro could find cheap affordable housing. I was paying as much in rent for a townhouse there as I am in a mortgage now for a 4 bedroom on an acre. Yep, location matters, but I'm driving 30 miles each way to work and I love where I am. In Va Beach I couldn't live 30 miles away from work and get there consistently on time. Most states spread the imbeciles out evenly, in Virginia they make them all live in the Tidewater.
Keep in mind, this is only my opinion of the Tidewater. The rest of Virginia is basically OK, except that every damn time I get stopped by the state troopers for anything I get ticketed. And if they could measure the air you breathe they'd tax you on it.

logprof -
I totally agree. Kids don't need money to make a nice Mother's Day present. And yes, Louisiana child support tables are that messed up. It doesn't take $1500 from the dad making $3000 to support a nine year old.

It ends at the age of 18, 25 if the little darlings go to college, depending on what the divorce papers say. After that, as I told my daughter, I no longer have any reason to deal with your mother and I lost the desire to a long time ago.
Child support = the screwing you get for the screwing you got. Tie it to visitation and maybe it would be at least a little bit easier to take. As it is now, it's just a good reason to never have kids, ever. But I'm not bitter!

GGE, I also forgot to add that the assholes who bitch about the aircraft are in the minority: lots of people with "I [HEART] JET NOISE" bumper stix.
Now, have a good night all!

Maybe it's just that those are the ones you hear.
Maybe it's just that the bumper stix weren't so common 5 years ago.
Maybe it's just that Virginia Beach STILL has not complied with the requested building permit exclusion zones in the crash zones around the base.
Or maybe it's a combination of all the above plus some.

Visa card and a swim suit are all you need.
Wear the swimsuit on the plane. Maybe a pair of flip-flops if you want to get all dressy.
