— Maetenloch It be Friday. You know what to do.
So how about a little Godzilla to start the weekend
Along with Blue Oyster Cult's ode to the monster himself as the soundtrack. There's nothing like watching a guy in a rubber suit beating up other guys in monster suits. The funny thing about most Godzilla movies is that the parts with the fire-breathing atomic dinosaur himself are basically silent movies with explosions and monster sounds thrown in.
Oh and a little Godzilla trivia...in Japan he's known as Gojira which comes from the words 'gorira' (gorilla) and 'kujira' (whale). It's believed that the english version of his name came from a translation error.
Another true fact: the first concert I ever went to was a BOC concert. I was in middle school and no, I don't know what my parents were thinking. It was one of their few failures to say 'No' to one of my crazy-over-the-top-but-what-the-hell requests.

Interesting that in retrospect, no matter what the choice in 2008, we were going to get a dose of "1984". It was just a matter of which flavor that was to be served.

Actually this was addressed on the Corner. Science note: When it comes to CO2, volcanoes are not a major factor. This volcano is emitting about 10,000 metric tons a day, which is negligible compared to human emissions. In fact, the grounding of the flights probably saved many times more CO2 emissions than the volcano has put out. So don't let yourself go down that particular rabbit hole. The other emissions are much more serious.

Modern "education" has spawned people who are degraded. When I was young I read Brave New World. It horrified me, as it should any normal person, to imagine such a society as was depicted in that book. A friend of mine a grade behind me was discussing the subject when it came time for his class to read it. The bulk of his classmates thought that the Soma, the infantilist approach to instant sexual gratification, and all the rest of the communist horror depicted in that book would be quite nice. Sickening. The young people of the nation need a good, hard culling.

Liberals LOVE to pull this shit. They all think they're the bastard offspring of Sigmund Freud and Socrates, and try to turn every God-damned political disagreement into a "teachable moment." They insist you "define your terms" even as they throw around emotion-laden words themselves with wild abandon. They ask "why do you think that?" about your opinions, as if they're expecting you to say that you're just parroting Rush Limbaugh or something.
Trying to argue with them is like trying to debate windblown dust. There's no true substance and they refuse to be pinned down. You wind up quibbling over minor side-points like the definition of Socialism or the true authorship of some quotation, letting the whole business of how the Democrats are pillaging the country slip away.
DON'T FALL FOR IT. Sean Hannity gets criticized for his repetitive, allegedly "simple-minded" style but he has found the secret: stick to your point, don't let them lure you into rhetorical blind alleys, and don't let the libs define the terms of the argument.

One of the local talk guys had someone on who was talking about changing a school into a charter school. A teacher called in and voiced his concern that charter schools only select the "cream of the crop" and whined about the other kids that aren't as successful or are ESL kids.
I wanted to smack the guy. Why are we funding mediocrity when we should be supporting our best and brightest students? We do the opposite, esp here in CA. If you're smart and disciplined, you get ignored by teacher in favor of the dipshit in class who doesn't care and doesn't want to be there. So instead of kicking out the dipshit and focusing on the kid(s) who is (are) actually going to make it academically, they focus on making sure everything is "fair."

Indeed, I am sure that is wise. I, of course, have simple thoughts and simple ambitions. I would be content with a class that somehow manage to inculcate the following ideas:
1. Sometimes it's good to keep your legs closed, especially if you are unmarried and poor. In fact, it's usually best.
2. You are not the center of the universe. Other people do not exist simply to serve your whims. Men, for example, are also human beings - their utility extends beyond being an ATM and a sperm donor.
3. Regular bathing is important, and soap is cheap.
4. No, really, you are NOT the center of the universe. Others really do not exist simply to serve your whims.
5. You're liberated now. Get a job.

Yes - exactly! I was discussing that exact matter today with a co-worker while driving back from a machine validation. Here in MI we have a "schools of choice" provision that lets you send your kids outside your own district. My co-worker sent her kids to the school in the next town, just as every other parent of the better kids in her small city did, to get them away from the gutter trash who infest the schools where she lives. The underclass vermin were utterly without discipline, and disrupted the process for everyone else. The teachers/administrators had to waste all their time on those bad apples.
I think one key failure in the US is our insistence on enforcing truancy laws. This is absurd. If a kid does not want to go to school, it is better that they not go. Sending one of those brats to school is like trying to teach a pig to sing. It wastes your time and annoys the pig.

That wedding album looks like just about every nuptial I've ever attended.
A buddy of mine got hitched to a Cleveland chick whose very large and wealthy family was Ukrainian Orthodox. The wedding started at 11:00am and we had to be at the church by 10 just to make sure we knew the drill. The Monsignor was gassed on something and after a two hour ceremony followed by five hours of pictures, we were fucking tanked before we even made it to the reception hall.
It got uncomfortable when it came time for the best man's speech. As soon as he stood up, the non-English speaking contingent stood up and started singing something in Russian. We didn't know what to do so we just shut up and ordered more booze.
It was pretty fun but really bizarre. Russians are fucking wierd.

Good old fashioned humiliation would help, too.
I, for one, think another good measure to encourage better performance would be to make it mandatory that all grades be publicly posted by student name. Rankings should be kept current.

Parent notification doesn't seem to instill the same fear these days as it used to. When I was a kid, having to have my parents sign for a bad grade was mortifying. But a lot of parents either don't care or don't have time to care so they won't mete out punishment to their children. Or, again, their kids can do no wrong and it must be the teacher who is wrong. One of my friends who taught in Teach for America frequently experienced that latter.
Also, see 17 Again when Zac Efron takes down the school bully and threatens to notify the kid's parents. The kid just scoffs at it.

To My Fellow Co Moron With the 36 C's and Fine body:
Thanks for the constant cock tease. I really do enjoy the extremes you go to show off your smoking hot bod, e.g. the see through blouses, painted on pants, thongs, shirts that are super low cut to the navel, mini skirts, braless days, the hole nine yards.
Yet it's time to stop the double standard. As I explained to Ace, for every action there is a reaction. It's a physical law. Allow me to explain: After witnessing you parade around the blog all day, stopping to pose on my monitor, chat with your female colleagues whilst you bend over to display an ass that I would crawl a thousand miles to gander, don't be surprised and pissed off and run to Maet to tattle on me. It's only natural that I have become . . . . well, engorged.
And in my state of turgid arousal, I remain where I am, in my mancave, trying to hide a throbbing member who cannot be so easily hidden or controlled. I am a man. I like women.
You don't see us guys walking around the blog showing off our wood, do you? I don't prance in and announce to all within ear shot, "Gee, Bob, these new briefs really accentuate the length and girth of my now steel like cock" or "I'm not sure, but I don't think these slacks make my dick look big, what do you think Ted?". To do so would be, well, let's just say "inappropriate". Yet, you feel compelled to do just that after having made your latest purchase from Victoria Secret or Nordy's.
You got the reaction from me you wanted. I am just sayin'...
Thank YOU!

I realize this, and part of the solution is to repeal that law, or amend it such that posting grades is again legal.
There's plenty of shit in this life that the law forbids, yet should not be forbidden. We need about 5 years where the legislature is permitted only to repeal old laws - not to pass any new ones.
The long accretion of BS laws over the years is a good arguement for hitting the reset button. We need fewer laws, in simpler language. You shouldn't need a degree in order to understand the law of the land.

If any of you out there are considering teaching, try fifth and sixth grade: They're still kids but they know enough by then that you can learn from teaching them. At that age, they're still mostly nice kids, B.H. ( before hormones )

There is an argument to be made that the current state of affairs, where citizens constantly break laws because they are too complex or that the laws are ridiculous, is intentional.
To take the simpliest example, how on earth can we have a state of affairs where 90% of highway drivers disagree with posted speed limits, and yet those limits won't be changed?

It's not about who has some vested interest in seeing the grades. It's about using peer pressure and the fear of humilation, the fear of others thinking you're a dumb fuck, to motivate the student. When I was a kid I compared grades with my friends. Those who did poorly were mocked by those who did well, and life went on. It was amazing how the grades leveled up to the higher level, now that I think back on it.

I see your point, though. Maybe it can be limited to posting grades of those who are unmotivated/dead beat. They probably wouldn't care, but who knows.

Ever notice that men remember almost fondly getting a disciplinary swat in school. Rather than a debilitating violent act that left them scarred, it seems to more closely resemble a right of passage.
I am for discipline in school from early on. Not crazy whip your ass teachers. A controlled single but painful swat can remind them they are kids. That they are out of line and it can happen again. Their choice. Kids learned more. They didn't have to worry about a nutcase coming to school with a gun. Bullies knew the teacher was the real sherrif in town.

Speaking of kids, I think I’ve told you that the 2nd grade is doing a big social studies project where each class is a community. Well, today they had an “earthquake” and some kids got their houses damaged and had to pay to repair them. This led to the kids being able to buy insurance in case another disaster happened.
The kids also found out that they will be paying taxes next week, some for community things (streets etc.) and some to the hospital for health care—ironic, huh?
It is an awesome project and it really renewed my faith that sometimes good things can happen in public schools. The students are all engaged and learning and there isnÂ’t any political slant to any of it.

Don't weaken in the face of the feelings-sparers. Competition makes everything better. It's a law of nature. I suck at sports due to inadequate hand-eye coordination - does that mean I should hide my lesser ability by never picking up a ball? Because failure in athletics is very public. Yet we expect everyone to play hard and suck it up if they lose, and carry on. And we expect those who win to be good sports. The same should apply to mental endeavors.
Further, there are plenty of kids who ONLY do well when using their brains. They get no recognition with this secret grade nonsense. We need to go back to valuing high intelligence a little bit more than being born 8 feet tall and able to handle a basket ball or with a neck thicker than the diameter of your skull that enables you to be a good lineman in football. Modern society doesn't need much in the way of athleticism. We need people with brains. For fuck's sake - the nerdy/brainy kids don't even get laid. They have nothing other than the hope of one day leveraging their smarts for a higher paying job. Whoopdee freakin' doo. What a motivator for a young man. NOT.

269 When you're younger, you get graded on memorization of rote facts. As you grow older, your homework deals with applying these facts. In relation to the arts/humanities, you should get graded according to accuracy & application, & argument. A student may still be wrong as to their beliefs, but they gave a brilliant argument.
Those dead-beat kids aren't really going to care that you posted their grades. They aren't in school to learn, they're there b/c it's required. What they ought to do is completely overhaul the system to where students are more motivated to get a diploma. Make that piece of paper count for more than it currently does.
Posted by: Miss'80sBaby at April 16, 2010 07:43 PM (yfJ6g)
Wait? So they were playing a live-action version of SimCity?
Yes, no computers involved. They started out by building their houses, then they filled out resumes and applied for jobs. Next they decided on laws for their communities. This week they got paid and then had the chance to buy insurance and also buy a driverÂ’s license. Also the disaster. Which isnÂ’t as bad as one of the other communities, theyÂ’ve already had a fire, and their banker arrested for bank fraud, and in the earthquake everyoneÂ’s barns were destroyed. The urban community lost an apartment building in the earthquake. Next week taxes.
I predict that by the end of this project the kids will know way more about being productive members of a community then if theyÂ’d just read their social studies books and done the worksheets in them. Nobody gets welfare by the way.

Actually Undead, proportionally theyÂ’ve done a good job. The kids make $10 a week if they turn in their homework and there are a few extra jobs here and there that allow them to earn money. But, taxes are $7--$4 for the community and $3 for health care. Pretty big hit when you only have $10.

Our school had an anti-slavery lesson when I was a kid. Half the kids in my class were randomly selected to be slaves, and the other half were owners. (We are all white, so there were no major issues) We had a slave auction, and the slave kids had to do whatever their owners demanded (within reason). It only half worked, though. Half the class learned that slavery sucked. The other half saw that maybe it had some advantages... Ahhh, that was a fun week.

I agree. People seem to think there is only one type of intelligence, but there are several. Some people only have academic, others are practical, & the special few are both. But both types are needed in society, so that the academics can impart knowledge to the practical, which benefits all parties.

Right? What right do I have to be able to google you (if I knew your name) and find your home address and heaven knows what else about you that is captured on line somewhere? What right do I have to find out your criminal record with a background check? Those seem like more serious issues to me, as far as privacy is concerned.
I am unconcerned with the petty privacy issues involved with this matter. I see no great risk to anyone's well being if their grades are exposed to the world's view, especially since many employers require them to be submitted when you apply for a job. Grades descrimination is already legal.
This approach - using social pressure to motivate students to better performance - has potential benefits that I believe outweigh little Timmy's hurt feelings from people finding out he's the dumbest kid in class.

Well, yes, but again - I'm looking for something that motivates a young person. Marriage and kids is not high on the list of motivators. Indeed, for many it is a disincentive. As well it should be.
That wasn't the point. Many of the intellectuals I've encountered in life are doing quite practical things, like designing weaponry, fighting disease, teaching, clerking in the courts, managing businesses, etc.
As for the comments about marriage, there is a reason so many young girls play house when they are young. Women are not to be confined to being house wives, but being a wife & mother is something wanted by many of them. The way that our society has been removing that desire is by telling little girls that it's wrong to want that, that you can only have a career. Why not both? Learn a skill & trade before you get married, get married & have kids if you so choose, then work more as they grow older. Best of both worlds, & it's something to fall back on if your husband dies or if you get divorced.

Human beings generally don't work like that. In fact, the abolition movement should be considered as a much greater human achievement then it is. Wanting you group to take from other groups is pretty much the norm. If you can get people to think as individuals this is less of a concern, but the left is all about thinking as a group, not as an individual...

Well, as I've said, the young people today need a good culling.
Anyway, posting grades is not an imposition of humiliation - it's not wearing a dunce cap and sitting in the corner. I think that some are exaggerating the likely negative effects, while ignoring the obvious incentive that most normal people have to NOT look like a dummy.

360 All of socio and anthro is included within history and poli sci..Some disciplines are inherently 'progressive' in their very nature.
I think they are progressive in their current forms. Looking back through history, can we say with certainty that everyone looking at history & politics was liberal, & that the people who taught that were always the same way? Besides, you still need those fields. The Founding Fathers weren't born in a vacuum.

I am unconcerned with the petty privacy issues involved with this matter. I see no great risk to anyone's well being if their grades are exposed to the world's view, especially since many employers require them to be submitted when you apply for a job. Grades descrimination is already legal.
I was the kind of kid who competed on MY OWN fucking terms and wanted PISS-ALL to do with anyone else. You post my private records without my consent and I jam a fork in your fucking eye.
This approach - using social pressure to motivate students to better performance - has potential benefits that I believe outweigh little Timmy's hurt feelings from people finding out he's the dumbest kid in class.

Many things used to teach a child their behavior is out of line has been outlawed or shunned to the point that teachers have little or no power left to control the room. Teachers keep saying we need smaller classes. Public schools keep adding more administrative personnel. My 6th grade class at St. Gabriel had 64 kids in it and we were ahead of the public school kids. We had one principal in the school and one secretary. They, however, didn't have to report everytime a kid farted to 15 state and federal agencies.
Teachers had games that promoted competition, like being the first with your hand up with the capital of a state. The kids with "A's" were lauded by the teacher. And even though you might be a little jealous of that kid you worked harder so you could get that recognition. We didn't have 15 names for the particular mental impairment that prevented you from getting good grades. You were either stupid or smart. For most of us that was a choice. We could continue being stupid or we could work harder and be smart.
Hyperactivity wasn't a problem because rain or shine, cold or hot, dry or snow you went outside for recess. That is unless you were a dumbass like me and misbehaved. Then you could spend recess copying pages from the dictionary or writing multiplication tables. Take as long as you want to do it Mr. Keith but no recess till you are finished to my satisfaction. Worked for me. We are creating most of our problems today

Actually, I only advocate the extermination of one specific population - the group that would happily see you and everyone else not sharing their love of sharia stoned to death or enslaved. The vermin who would eagerly drag us all back to the 7th Century. I am by no means ashamed of that view, as it is easily defensible as the only effective long term solution to the threat they pose. Anything else is really just a form of waiting around for them to figure out how to kill us.

yes, but you dodged my question: Where is college-level teaching of socio or anthro 'done right'? Those subjects, along with 'humanities' can be included in the comprehensive study of history
Because so many 'disciplines' have splintered off from history, the study of history has been reduced to dates and laws and battles and descriptions of pretty pictures in textbooks. History can be taught from many perspectives, emphasizing many things

The last math class I took in high school was Algebra 2 and Trig (10th grade), and the only math class I took in college was Prob/Stat (barely got out of there with a C-. We had to take it so we could write our senior research paper. I could do math fine in chemistry, and geometry was fine, but not when it was math for math's sake. We as a nation have allowed our educational system to degrade. We broke up the nuclear family through divorce and out of wedlock births. We chase the almighty buck. We make the choice that it is better for Johnny to wear $100 sneakers and have the latest video games than have a parent home when he comes home from school. We hire lawyers to sue our neighbors and when we have a dispute.

Your question was:
When and where are they 'done right'?
Nothing in the question specifically re. teaching, so I didn't dodge it by discussing research. As far as teaching it goes, I haven't been in classes in these subjects since undergrad days thirty years ago, when there weren't so many people chasing so few jobs, hence less need for the candidates to distinguish themselves, usually by producing some sort of spectacular crackpot "research". I do run into literary types at conferences, doing Chaucer or some such, some of whom are actually good at their jobs, as anyone can tell by listening to their presentations.
Because they aren't the same subjects, and they don't use the same methods. If you are teaching a history survey you don't have the time to go into the physical anthropology of the Vikings or the X-Group Nubians, or the genealogy of the metre or language used by Chaucer; if you want to delve into those things you need separate classes. Unfortunately these subjects are too specialized to deal with that easily.

Heh! That reminds me of an extra credit problem my physics teacher gave us in high school. He put a piece of steel in an aquarium and it sank. He put a piece of wood in, and it floated. He posited that all boats were wooden boats painted to look like steel since boats float. We had to prove why this was not a correct hypothesis.

yeah, but most history classes are not intro or survey. And I should add 'philosophy' to history, because all these other disciplines grew out of those two. History used to be broad enough to encompass all of these 20th Century inventions like socio, etc
Whatever methods you use in those splinter disciplines, you can use in history--or I can. My point was that a lot of what is featured in those classes is idiosyncratic and not well-suited to academic study

For me math and algebra was almost a license to cheat. Just keep your work neat, as well as your thinking, learn and apply the rules. As a former Marine going to UC on the GI bill I was shuttled to business school only to find out after I graduated I had more aptitude for engineering.
I did stink up the place when it came to calculus. My initial prof was a lousy teacher who absoulutely could not stay on one concept long enough to teach it. Silly me, I thought that was his freakin job. He was a brilliant man just goofier than batshit. I changed classes but it was too late. I never got it. That was the only "D" I got in college.

Being in the legal field (God luv ya AmishDude, don't start ), why the eff do I need to know how to graph a parabola (sp)?
Here is why.
Think of a pendulum, swaying back and forth. Think of the foce acting on the pendulum. The force as a function of distance is a parabola.
Think of a spring, vibrating back and forth. The force between the two ends of a spring is parabolic.
Think of a lens, focusing rays of light onto a point. This lens is parabolic.
Think of a molecule, with atoms vibrating back and forth. The vibration is parabolic.
Parabolas are everywhere, if you look close enough.

As I get older I become more aware and fascinated by history. Man's history seems so much shorter. When you are a kid the revolutionary war was forever ago. Now, it was just a little more than three of my lifetimes ago. Ten of my lifetimes ago we were in the middle ages. Thirty Rome still ruled the world.
Without history being taught we seem so isolated. Unfortunately, the teaching of history is subject to the vagaries of the time and place in which it is being taught.

Posted by: Ex Consort of Hades, former Courtesan of Pain at April 16, 2010 09:15 PM (Yq+qN)
Obviously survey courses aren't the be-all and end-all of history courses. If, however, you are researching, say, the Black Death in Italy, learning all about Bocaccio's literary antecedents and style won't help much, although reading his detailed account of the effects of the plague in Florence will. Nowadays history has its own methods, and they are not those of anthropology, sociology, lit crit, philosophy, or whatever. All these subjects become very specialized in a hurry when you get beyond surveys.
Not that those studies aren't useful. My UG minor was chemistry, which when I had to cope with medieval alloys later was more than a little useful. But using tools is a long way from creating or improving those tools.

I live in Kirkland, WA, across the lake from Seattle. We had a Tea Party yesterday in Bellevue. It was pretty well attended (during lunch time so a lot of people coming and going because a lot of people came from work on their lunch break). I think there was maybe 4-500 people there, hard to tell with people filtering in and out. They had about 3000 people show up at the state capitol in Olympia, and there was another fairly large one (I think I read 1000 people) in Seattle. There were also some other ones in Renton and Kent, I think. This is a pretty darn blue state. If it wasn't for Eastern WA, we'd be deep, dark indigo.

I flew out to my friend's wedding a few years ago in Enumclaw. I only learned about the town's reputation later here on AOS. I wish I had known then. He and I met while we were both stationed in Korea. He's very conservative politically and at his wedding, most of his friends there were libs. I got to make fun of them all night. Then I flew back to Detroit and he dealt with the fallout. He would have done the same for me!!

Chemjeff,
Earlier, I started to write a comment on your being upset with the wide brush that was painting academia this evening but I hadn't coalesced to what was bothering me.
The frustration that was shown obviously was not with you but any teacher who brings his politics to the classroom. When one is being paid to teach a subject then teach the subject. Whether I like your politics or not I don't want you to pass them on to the students in any other way than by the example of your hard work and your expectation of the same from your students. It is the same as an audience shouting to Linda Ronstadt, "Shut up and sing."
I would think you are more aware than most that our universities have become bastians of the worst of liberal thought and policy. I would never want to throw the baby out with the bathwater. Some research is good and some worthless. Some teachers are good and some not. Let's keep the babies and occasionally change the bathwater.

Education is an extremely sensitive, depressing, and angering subject for me because my own was quite deficient. The school system I came up in was a disaster; the schools were bad, the teachers were worse, nobody cared. Before long I didn't care either, my grades slipped, and school became a long and painful ordeal that to this day I don't know how I got through and the particulars of which left me with lasting anger and bitterness towards everyone. The more perspective I have, the worse I realize that it was and the angrier I get. My reactions to it all were my own fault, and I have to live with those failures. Most of what I now know about language and nearly everything about government, civics, and history is self-taught. Meanwhile, I do my best to block many of my memories from before age 18.
I know the kinds of kids whom a certain person recommended should be "culled". Many of them were children nobody gave a shit about and their fates were sealed before the appearance of their first pubic hair. I remember the kind of dehumanizing "competition" that was put into practice in some classes and I will carry the memories and the fury until I die.
Sorry for ruining everyone's evening. Good night.

I don’t really remember much of the documentary. It was really boring and disjointed. The only thing that sticks with me is that the guy who died was a “normal” engineering type, never said where he worked outright, but I got the feeling it was Boeing. He was divorced and was supposed to see his kids the next weekend—that seemed important to the filmmakers for some reason. Oh, and he lived in a nice condo.
The parts about the farm just seemed like a bunch of hicks getting together and smoking weed and eating and talking smack and then going out and saying “wow what pretty ponies.” The documentary didn’t really get into what happened next.
I honestly couldnÂ’t tell if the people who made the documentary were pro or anti bestiality.

HELL EXPLAINED BY CHEMISTRY STUDENT
The following is an actual question given on a University of Washington chemistry mid term.
The answer by one student was so 'profound' that the professor shared it with colleagues, via the Internet, which is, of course, why we now have the pleasure of enjoying it as well :
Question: Is Hell exothermic (gives off heat) or endothermic (absorbs heat)?
Most of the students wrote proofs of their beliefs using Boyle's Law (gas cools when it expands and heats when it is compressed) or some variant.
One student, however, wrote the following:
First, we need to know how the mass of Hell is changing in time. So we need to know the rate at which souls are moving into Hell and the rate at which they are leaving. I think that we can safely assume that once a soul gets to Hell, it will not leave. Therefore, no souls are leaving. As for how many souls are entering Hell, let's look at the different religions that exist in the world today.
Most of these religions state that if you are not a member of their religion, you will go to Hell. Since there is more than one of these religions and since people do not belong to more than one religion, we can project that all souls go to Hell. With birth and death rates as they are, we can expect the number of souls in Hell to increase exponentially. Now, we look at the rate of change of the volume in Hell because Boyle's Law states that in order for the temperature and pressure in Hell to stay the same, the volume of Hell has to expand proportionately as souls are added.
This gives two possibilities:
1. If Hell is expanding at a slower rate than the rate at which souls enter Hell, then the temperature and pressure in Hell will increase until all Hell breaks loose.
2. If Hell is expanding at a rate faster than the increase of souls in Hell, then the temperature and pressure will drop until Hell freezes over.
So which is it?
If we accept the postulate given to me by Teresa during my Freshman year that, 'It will be a cold day in Hell before I sleep with you,' and take into account the fact that I slept with her last night, then number two must be true, and thus I am sure that Hell is exothermic and has already frozen over. The corollary of this theory is that since Hell has frozen over, it follows that it is not accepting any more souls and is therefore, extinct......leaving only Heaven, thereby proving the existence of a divine being which explains why, last night, Teresa kept shouting 'Oh my God.'
THIS STUDENT RECEIVED AN A+.

I'm skeptical. First, Русская Культура is in nominative case, which means its the subject of the sentence. Secondly, заравствует is clearly third person singular, so it'd be more like "Yes, Russian Culture ___________s". My dictionary's in the other room and I'm too lazy to fetch it, so I have no clue about the verb.

What are the downsides to just saying 'screw it' and wearing a swimsuit, vans, and a tee-shirt for a week?
None. If staying in a hotel, you can simply launder your outfit in the hotel pool/hottub.

I'm going to a friend's ranch in AZ. My ticket says Tucson, so I'm sure it's near there. I'm pretty sure they have clothes or at least know where to get them.
I really didn't know I was supposed to be there until my ticket was couriered over this morning.

332 If it were up to me, I'd bring back classical education, trivium & quadrivium, plus add some strictly practical classes. It's a much more rigorous (exacting) system, but one which requires children to prove they actually learned something. The emphasis on roll-playing, acting, & activities like PGiS described is also highly encouraged in those circles.
Posted by: Miss'80sBaby at April 16, 2010 11:56 PM (yfJ6g)
Those both came up right next to each other as I was thinking about the whole grading / posting of grades thing, trying to catch up.
I was very lucky in that I stumbled upon a pretty unique College that I eventually earned a degree from.
You will hate me Amish Dude because I got my degree in Liberal Arts.
Don't hate me too much though, we all did. And when I say we all did, I don't mean all of the people I knew or a all of the people in my class. I mean everyone who ever earned the same degree that I did.
No choice I'm afraid. To get this degree every single student has to go through pretty much the exact same course of studies, in the same order, based pretty much on the classical trivium and quadrivium in education.
No electives really. Thank, Goodness!
If I'd had my way I would never have met the basics (and the beauties) of mathematical proof through the study of Euclid in Freshman math, nor even be capable 2 years later of trying to brute it out, teaching myself the basics of Vector Calculus (on my own time) to follow Maxwell's papers in Jr. Physics.
I had other required projects going on concurrently; learning how to read and translate 2 other languages, dissecting some animals, playing and teaching others to play musical instruments, calculate epicycles, write observations, write theses, write essays, read a bunch of philosophers, but mostly be able to show up every day and have something intelligent to say about all of this stuff in a classroom discussion.
We never got grades publicly posted.
What we got instead was something called a Don Rag.
1st 2 years, a Don Rag is where all of the Tutors who have been observing you in classroom discussion and have read all of the papers that you turned into them the year before, discuss you with each other as if you are not there.
It's clearly the first time that they have shared their observations about your own precious self, because at some point there is some confusion in the committee about whether your failure to meet some particular expectations are a question of laziness, honest confusion, or complacency.
At which point you will be invited to speak, so as to shed light on the matter.
(It is official policy not to discuss letter grades at this school but hey, there is no law against asking the Registrar about the A's and B++'s you just got raked over the coals for, huh?)
Jr. & Sr. year are a little bit different. At that point, they figure if you have been through two of these reports given by all of your Tutors in your presence, you should be smart enough to start the conversation by being able to report your academic progress to all of your Tutors first and then have them respond
Okay, hope I kind of gave you a taste but there is another option than the "laziness, honest confusion, or complacency" that I mentioned when I was thinking of my own Don Rags.
Every Sophomore also has to go through a process called "Enabling".
That's where every Tutor that a student has ever had, gets together and they decide whether or not that student has the ability to complete the next two years of the programme.
It's not a matter of grade point average. This is an all required course, all four years, all courses in chronological order. Either you pass ALL of Freshman year or NOT, either you pass ALL of Sophomore year or NOT.
Sometimes, some people have what it takes to pass Sophomore year but the Committee decides that they are probably not able to pass any further.

Uhm. I was talking about my Collge experience but as a matter of fact, I went to a hippy fucking Arts School in Chicago my JR & SR yr of HS and they were pretty much fucking desperate for me to goddamn write them something impressive by the time I got out.
Too bad, I was not pliable enough for my Jr. History teacher.
Too bad I figured out 3 mo. in, that my English teacher had some sort of weird ass agenda going on that involved Noam Chomsky, Malcolm X, Thoreau, PBS, Guatemalan shirts, and wire hanger earrings.
Good thing that I was drinking in the spirit of becoming a rebel and a thinker in order to become a good artist in all of my other classes.
Too bad that I thought that my English teacher's ravings about the evils of George Herbert Walker Bush being sworn in next semester, in English class, sounded...improbable.
Here is where the whole liberal smear machine broke down for me: I just did not think that it was reasonable to believe that any and all Republicans were so implacably motivated to crush the downtrodden that they would go out of their way to do so out of spite. In every case, no matter the consequence.
I mean, really. Absurd! That just can't be the way human nature works!
And in those days it was absurd!
Should still be.
I didn't bother with politics at all until about 2002. (Mostly because I spent a lot of that time either out of the country or as a student in other states where I never felt personally comfortable voting about issues in a locale where I felt more like a guest than a resident).
Didn't ever bother to register as a Republican in AZ until 2007 so I could vote in the Repub. Primary against McCain.
It's bee a long strange trip for me but the vector seems pretty clear...
I turned out even worse than my Jr. History teacher thought.
My Senior Year in H.S., she became an Academic Dean.
She made sure that I would be excluded from all of the top-level Senior year classes.
Uhm, my graduating class was 28 students.
I'm the one who needs to be kept away from 4-8 student AP courses?
Noted.
Bitch.
10 or 20 years from now, I'm going to be as bright as always but a little bit more shaped and a bit more honed.

Underwear I packed, but I don't wear socks and suits anymore except to funerals.
I settled on five pais of underware, a tooth brush, a comb, a pair of jeans and a few Hawaian shirts and if I need to get dressy a polo shirt from an old company I used to have. I designed the logo, so that's a vanity thing for me. Oh, and an extra pair of dresss vans tennis shoes.
I'm still tempted to wear the swimsuit onto the plane.

HAH! I've been on a Godzilla kick lately since I saw the very first one earlier this week. Although in the last two films from what I saw some CGI is used -- "Tokyo SOS" uses it to show Godzilla swimming underwater, and in "Final Wars" there's an appearance by the American Godzilla who is all CGI, who gets soundly defeated.
I love the hell out of these movies. What some see as cheesy special effects, I see as sticking to your roots.

Just curious, Maetenloch, when was that BÖC concert?
(Another true fact: The first concert I ever went to was almost Blue Öyster Cult. I was in high school and the band was supporting their release of Fire of Unknown Origin. The show was 50 miles away and I needed a ride. This dude said he'd bring me and my parents remarkably assented. Then the dude told me that my seat in his car got bumped for a girl. I totally understood: She was cute and I was just another dude. I found out the next day that she partied too much before the concert, was passed out in the theater for the whole show and threw up in his car on the way home.)

What do the left want? Obedience.
"The past two years have seen a profound change occur in the American system. Our basic currency is no longer the dollar. People like Jason Levin understand the nature of our new currency, which is obedience.
Obama Democrats worship central planning. They have repeatedly expressed the belief that only powerful, maternal government can be trusted to allocate the most essential resources, or manage vital industries. The free market is a playpen, filled with the stuff that isnÂ’t serious enough to merit direct control by the Mother State. When a particular toy causes the children of the electorate to scream, it is quickly snatched out of the pen. The free market canÂ’t even be trusted to deal with airline fees for carry-on luggageÂ… which turned out to be a market response to previous government action. You are expected to sit quietly and swallow your tears if Mother State chooses to beat you over the head with one of your toys."

I finally figured out why the Republican party is so inept. We don't have anyone who asks the question, "Hey, you know what, why don't we use this issue to score some political points and do a little damage to the Democrats?"
Opportunity after opportunity being blown, every day. And these aren't trivial matters. National security. The farce that is global warming. Asinine executive orders. Malfeasance. Corruption. Fraud. Scandals. A 2700-page health care reform act that is chock full of ammunition.
Every day the Democrats are handing the Republicans political opportunities, and every day the Republicans continue on their present course with their blinders on.
