Is This Recession Different?
I'd say yes. And this chart showing the percentage of workers unemployed over 26 weeks seems to agree. It only goes back 40 years but I bet we haven't had this many people out of work for so long since the 30's. Plus there's this scary chart.

Do Programmers Need a College Degree?
Well Zoho says no and they're putting their money where their mouth is by taking high school graduates and putting them through a two year training program and paying them a stipend while they apprentice with the company.
Based on a few years of observation, we noticed that there was little or no correlation between academic performance, as measured by grades and the type of college a person attended, and their real on-the-job performance. That was a genuine surprise, particularly for me, as I grew up thinking grades really mattered ...Over time, that led us to be bolder in our search for talent. We started to ask "What if the college degree itself is not really that useful? What if we took kids after high school, train them ourselves?"
Lawlessness in the UK: Anti-Israel Activist Vandals Freed By Jury
Five activists who caused £180,000 damage to an arms factory near Brighton were acquitted after they argued they were seeking to prevent Israeli war crimes by damaging the factory. They admitted to the sabotage but claimed that they were legally justified since the factory made military equipment sold to Israel that might be used in the occupied territories. Apparently a jury of their peers agreed.
Remembering Axis and Allies and Avalon Hill Games
I never played Axis and Allies but I did play a lot of Squad Leader, Afrika Korps, and similar games. And yeah the manuals did get a little thick at times. But as the manual itself pointed out, acquiring knowledge of the detailed rules over time is also a way to realistically model how combat leaders gain experience. One of the benefits of playing wargames as a kid is that I learned a lot of history along the way. Plus I also learned (often the hard way) why historical leaders chose the strategies they did.

Meanwhile the makers of Dungeons and Dragons are sponsoring a contest to reunite D&D playing groups who haven't thrown the dice together in years.
Should Married Couples Have A Sex Contract?
Dennis Prager has supported this idea in the past pointing out that having sex is the only obligation between a married couple for which "I don't feel like it" is considered a perfectly valid excuse. Feminists hate the idea but women who've tried it seem to be glad they did.

The Swastika Quilt From 1900
Well this is only shocking to those who think the Nazis invented the swastika. It's actually an ancient good luck symbol that literally goes back to the neolithic age and has been used all over the world. Carl Sagan has speculated that it was inspired by a near-Earth comet in prehistoric times. In Buddhism it symbolizes eternity and you'll find it in temples throughout Asia. But sadly a bunch of evil Germans have ruined it for the world.

Man Kills Self After Being Caught F*cking A Chicken
“His wife stormed into the kitchen during his intimacy with the chicken,” an investigator told reporters. “He failed to give a satisfactory explanation as he was caught in the act.”

How do you play Rock-Paper-Scissors with 7 people?
Why with Monkey-Pirate-Robot-Ninja-Zombie of course!
Zombie kills monkey and pirate but is taken out by robot and ninja.

The problem with that situation is that if they need to interact directly with the customer, and if the customer's needs are sophisticated, they do a crap job of that. So the programs are functional, but useless. My experience is that folks in white collar support roles who do not have 4-year college degrees tend to have major gaps in their communication skills, particularly written. So you spend an inordinate amount of time managing their work.

I'm in complete agreement on the zero correlation between a computer science degree and on-job performance developing software.
Someone coming out with a degree doesn't know how to develop real software. At most they just know some of the terminology and some general concepts. There is nothing in the degree that tests their mettle for real development projects.
There is something that has a good correspondence, though. People who are good at music tend to be more likely to be good software developers. I've heard theories that the symbolic stuff going on in music is similar to the symbolic stuff going on in a computer program, and thus uses the same part of the brain. All I know is that when I had a staff of a dozen developers, we could have put together a really excellent band from them.

This was the other great cause of Byrd's career: the earmark. He famously promised to be West Virginia's billion-dollar industry, and he kept his word. That's why there's the Robert C. Byrd Highway, Robert C. Byrd Freeway, Robert C. Byrd Cancer Research Center, Robert C. Byrd Rural Health Center, Robert C. Byrd Federal Building, Robert C. Byrd Federal Courthouse, Robert C. Byrd Academic and Technology Center, Robert C. Byrd Hardwood Technologies Center, Robert C. Byrd Institute for Advanced Flexible Manufacturing and a few dozen other pork-barrel projects named for the former chairman of the Appropriations Committee. At the Robert C. Byrd Center for Legislative Studies, academics can study how he moved the Bureau of Public Debt to West Virginia — and made sure it remained relevant.

Archaeologists have uncovered the remains of a 'massive, muscular
woman' who may have been a female gladiator during the Roman occupation
of Britain.
The woman was buried in an elaborate wooden coffin
with iron straps and copper strips in Credenhill, Herefordshire - close
to the headquarters of the SAS.
Her remains were found in a
crouched position in an area thought to be a suburb of the nearby Roman
town of Kenchester.

Seconded: programmers don't need a college degree. Most of the "programmers" are going to go into 2nd tier tech support, where they will be tweezing the bugs out of code some lazy sod crapped out back in 1997. What you need there is the ability to keep your cool around a panicked help-desk caller, and the ability to troubleshoot the bug. C++? How to code up a hashtable or a binary tree? Forget it; none of that will be on your inbox in the corporate world.

I don't think I'll enter the D&D reunion contest. When I used to play regularly 20+ years ago, I was banging the DM who subsequently dumped me after to 5 years to marry his then ex-girlfriend. One of the group became addicted to crystal and I'm not sure he's even alive, a couple of others are probably in jail and the rest would never admit to playing the game.

Did y'all see the story at Big Hollywood about the jimmy kimmel film crew deliberately and sadistically shining a really hot huge spotlight on a teenage boy at a pro-life protest? they even partially melted his bracelet, but he wouldn't run away. very brave by him, very sick by the crew.
I still don't understand why Hanks made it out of the 80s while Keaton didn't. I always liked Keaton much better, he had a better sense of fun about himself. And he's great in the batman movies, especially the second one with michelle pfeiffer, yowza. katie holmes or maggie gylenhaal couldn't hold a candle to that.

Keaton was pretty active during the 90's too, but he wasn't in anything spectacular. Only things I remember Keaton in during the 90's, early 00's was Multiplicity and that god-awful Jack Frost.
Hanks, on the other hand, had A League of their Own, Saving Private Ryan, The Green Mile, Forrest Gump,Toy Story 1 and 2...(and they're all from the 90's).
Hanks had his own stretch of bad luck for roles during the late 80's early 90's, and he learned well how to pick better roles. Unlike Ben Stiller, who'll star in any damn thing.

Don't care to hear any crap about, like from Lalas, about "Yeah, well, but rules are rules and you have to admire Uruguay's wiles." No, I don't. Nobody else does, either. The principle of equality before the law is made a mockery when the law is used as a tool to uphold an injust result. What are you going to tell me, that I should admire Billy Ayers' wiles for getting off scot-free? Well, fuck him, too and the horse he rode in on. As well as fucking Uruguay. In the 90s, mere talent and experience would land one a software development gig in a fairly quick fashion; that changed in the 2000's. In this dog shit economy, the lack of a degree renders one virtually unemployable in the software development field. And it will only get worse as the economy continues to be slowly murdered by this administration.
The last remaining large employers of software developers in the US are a) defense contractors and b) the gubmint as they wont be outsourcing their sensitive development work any time soon. In every such job description I've examined--and I read a whole fuck-ton of them over the past few years--they've require a minimum of a four year degree in Comp Sci/Comp Eng/etc. Many positions require a master's degree.
After having returned to the university to complete my CS degree and despite the 8 years of professional software development experience under my belt, it took me a full year to land my current job. Hell, I had actually given up hope and decided to enter the graduate CS program as I was rationalizing that I could, as a student, get my foot in some employer's door.
I don't know what it's like in non-engineering fields but there is no walking the streets, knocking on doors, and handing out resumes. You input you resume into many databases and hope to receive a call. Potential employers in the field do not want to talk to you unless they initiate contact. Lacking even a four-year degree means said contact is even less likely to occur.
I still need to learn Hindi as a backup plan.

so the pretty girl from zombieland and superbad is in a new high school movie kinda-sorta remake version of the scarlet letter. um, okay, i get why some feminist movies in the forties and fifties pushed ideas about double standards and sexual freedoms, but really? after everything that's happened? after how ridiculously, insanely slutty girls have become? we really need to keep insisting that america is too repressed and puritan? WTF.
speaking of, i was watching one of kate hepburn's characters critique the double standard a few days ago on TCM. about how men could cheat and it was okay, but a cheating woman's reputation was ruined. i wonder what she would think of the tramp culture we've got today. at least there's no more double standard! no more standards at all, actually. in retrospect, maybe she should have put more emphasis on the solution being less sleeping around by men, not more by women...

Yeah, that's the only thing that makes sense to me. It would be easy enough to make it where you just plugged the wire into it like you did a cellphone plug and when you were done charging just give it a good yank and it pops out. The only drawback would be having to carry multiple hooks if you were going to be out for a while.
If you are close enough to a house to steal power from the secondary why wouldn't you just go plug in to an outside recepticle?

Yeah, kinda'. I think he has a picture with Nixon (or of Nixon). And later, when he's (inadvertantly) renting his house to Matthau, the nemesis (played by Ned Beatty) tells his real estate agent not to rent to Democrats.
It's a gratuitous dig, but the rest of the movie is so fun (if you like Matthau) that it's pretty easy to ignore.

Defense cuts will kick the shit out of San Diego, and the aircraft companies left L.A back in the 90s. About all I can think of is Silicon Valley, and the SF and LA ports. Agriculture is being turned into dust. Once the state institutes their own version of Crap N Tax, the refineries will surely say fuck it.

Someone said to me that soccer is the most watched sport in the world. To which I replied, "Good. Then they don't need me to watch it."
But, it's the World Cup. I had to give a try watching the American team
play (and lose to) Ghana. I am a diehard NFL and NASCAR fan. There are all kinds of noises associated with football and fast car racing. There is nothing in the NFL or NASCAR comparable to the horn called the vuvuzela.
The vuvuzela drone is so irritating that the Ultimate Fighting Championship has
banned the horn from their events. If you were caught in the middle of a mass
barroom brawl, and you started blowing on a vuvuzela, everyone in the fight
would join forces to turn against you.
By the half time of the United States/Ghana soccer match, I had come to realize why the continent of Africa is locked in the stone ages.
All the same, I got through the U.S./Ghana soccer game. Mostly by wearing
headphones playing Pink Floyd's 'Dark Side of the Moon.'

Counties had an option of charging that to pay for safety services.. police .. fireman ect. You picked a county that decided to do it.
That's interesting. You would think Lawrenceburg and its county would have gotten enough tax revenue from the Argosy / Hollywood Casino to choke a horse. Who knew they would want more. Who am I kidding. They always want the money. I will do a little research next year.

You guys remember that jilted Park Service girl in Arizona who went out to burn her lover's letters and accidentally set off a rampaging wild fire that nearly destroyed a whole National Forest? What the funny uphot of that was the negotiation between the Bush admin and the libtards over the need to clear out underbrush. Libtards finally caved and allowed some trees to be logged. If, that is, IF they were cut down using solar powered chainsaws.
I'll ask the same question now that I asked back then. Anybody got a solar powered chainsaw?

Was at dinner with some friends and family tonight, several from Texas, and a lengthy and very serious topic of conversation was just how long it's going to be before the Lone Star State really does "assert some sovereignty" and what the chances are of Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana joining it. Since what's happening is quite literally a question of survival for this part of the country I wouldn't rule anything out. Scares the shit out of me but when you dump a 40-50% unemployment rate onto a bunch of very angry Cajuns who knows what's going to happen.

There's a local chain in Baton Rouge called Brew-bachers that serves excellent burgers. And beer.
*but then, who doesn't love a little in-n-out?

Yup. Agreed. Dennis Prager makes this point. We ARE in a civil war.
I see this everyday. I have more in common with African bushmen than I do with many aging middle class white folk in suburban Denver. It's that bad.
I'm relatively young, but I figured out that this country was in a slow decline when Bush, in a time of war, only a couple years after 9/11, could only beat a pathetic loser like Kerry by, for all intents and purposes, one state...Ohio, in 2004.

You know, it's funny, the country's more multicultural, more "minority," less "northern european" than ever, but I've noticed a lot lately, esp. in discount stores and dept. stores in minority areas... when they're trying to sell stuff, the pictures of the models are all of Northern European descent of one sort or another. It's baffling to me, especially in demographic areas where people of scandi or irish descent aren't a significant part of the population.

Those are fantastic. When I was in CA there was one in Buena Park that had to be about 50 years old; a true classic. Old, somewhat dilapidated, but wonderful. I went out there one gray day to find it had suddenly closed down, and was moved to write a small tribute to it:
I'd almost forgotten there was such a thing as an A&W Restaurant. And yet, I can still remember Mom and Dad taking me to one as a little kid, a small, aging, isolated stand that stood on Carmel Ave. near the cemetery, back in a distant time when north Lafayette wasn't as dangerous. I vividly recall being excited by the novelty of curbside service, of being able to get a root beer float in a glass mug at a fast food place (no McDonald's, this); I'd never heard of such a thing, which is why I remember that trip to the A&W to this day. It closed down long, long ago; years later I read that more than half the A&W franchises in America closed in the mid-to-late '80s due to corporate mismanagement.
In all the years since Carmel Ave. I never saw another A&W, had almost begun to wonder whether sipping a frosty glass of root beer in the family Suburban was simply a false childhood memory, a trick of the mind -- until one Saturday a few weeks ago I stumbled upon an actual, functioning, decades-old ghost on a quiet stretch of Orangethorpe in Buena Park, California. This was a genuine carhop place from the golden age of drive-ins; it had to date from the late '50s to the early '60s, no later. The kind of place you can't find anywhere, anymore. The carhops had long since vanished, the curbside service had long since ceased, but you could still walk up to an outdoor counter and they'd still serve you their signature product in a genuine glass mug.
And if you stepped inside, you'd swear you had entered Arnold's Diner itself. This was a classic after-school hangout, from an era when the kids all spoke English and didn't kill one another. As I sat in a quiet corner of this run-down museum piece, its lone customer on a Saturday afternoon, sipping a mug of root beer and enjoying a delicious cheeseburger, I could see its past as surely as if the doors had been a portal through time. The sights and sounds of Atomic America -- of rock-and-roll and roller skates and Chevrolets and phone booths and laughter and young love and days that never ended, of the carefree fun of life supplemented by an endless supply of "All-American Food!" -- were palpable. The room was crammed full; the kids were spilling out into the parking lot, which itself swarmed with cars; the A&W, long ago swallowed up in a gray industrial park, was a beacon of noise and light in the Southern California twilight. All of this and more once existed here, without question. It was a resilient outpost of reflected glory in an increasingly unrecognizable country, an anachronism bravely resisting its own ending.
I went by there again today, hoping for another of those great burgers, a mug of root beer, and the persuasive aura of the past -- only to find that everyone was gone, the taps were dry, the restaurant was closed. It turns out mine had been one of the final mugs to be served up at the Buena Park A&W, on its final day of business after five decades; that my aluminum Honda had been one of the last lonely vehicles to occupy a lot that once was a sea of domestic steel and chrome; that I had been one of the last to step through the doors of a fading slice of Americana before it disappeared forever.

Bush made history in 2004 in several ways. For one, he became the first Republican ever to win the Presidency without carrying New Hampshire. For another, more ominously, he won the smallest margin of any re-elected President in the country's history. I'd like to chalk that up just to Karl Rove's 50% + 1 win-on-the-margins strategy, but I'm afraid there really is more to it.

Good points. I think a couple states were probably stolen but who knows.
I think their is more to it though as you say. Reagan, and even Bush 1 won by landslides in the 80's. This ain't possible now I'm afraid. The left has done an outstanding job of dumbing down and making the public dependent on government. I'm not optimistic. I'd like to delay the inevitable for selfish reasons though.

LOL, Bat Hook for power lines. This should name this "Don't try this at home kids". The average overhead residential power line is 7KV and not something you need to "sticking razor blades into". What is funny is that if they had built this thing a little bit differently no tap in to the line would be necessary. You you postion it correctly you can pull current induced by the high voltage line. For a major line of 220KV or 500KV you can just stand under it and pick up the induced current.

The division officer got wind of it and came down as he was climbing back up the ladder and he went and complained loudly. The division officer told him to take a bath next time.

Are we live here?
Just wondering, 'cause apparently Comcast in Tucson is pretty much going to crap out every 15 min. or so and they all are on vacation.
Seriously.
It is not possible to get a live rep, no matter what, no matter which phone tree branch you dangle on.
EVERYONE at this company is on vacation, 'till Monday.
Not possible to get an answer, much less a solution, to manually re-setting the fucking modem every 18 goddamned minute suntil the crisis of the holiday weekend is abated.
Fuck Comcast!
There ain't shit on TV worth watching this Summer and their ain't gonna be much better come Fall.

How can you refuse the sweetness of your internet connection? You were an early adopter, because of your business interests!
Well, Fuck Off!
So, so, so...
Fuck Off!
You have unilaterally decided that if shit gets funky on your networks, it can all wait 'till Monday?
Really?
Really, Comcast?
Your solution is to have your subscribers manually re-boot the fucking cable modem every 15 godammned min. until someone rolls into a cubicle to apologize on Monday?
Yeah well, put it that way...
You kind of have a good point there!
WTF do I need with 24x7 "Hi-Speed" internet access anyway?
Probably unreasonable of me to want to look at the internet for the four days that anyone who is not a complete idiot, spends eating Lobster Sammiches on Martha's Vinyard!
So.
Got it.
I probably don't need to have internet access when everyone important is on Vay-Cay, in fabulous places.
So, what am I paying you for, every month?
It's kind of expensive, really.
Hell! If I can go for 4 days with a crappy or non-existent internet connection, who's to say that I can't go for 14, or 40 or 400?
This has been very edifying.
Thank You, Comcast!

That is direct access to your modem. There should be a menu there with a selection for "signal". Click on that selection. Most modems require an incoming signal strength of at least -12 dBmv. If you are bloew that or near it then that is your problem and it means that your provider is not giving you enough signal.
If it is ok then check for a diagnostic menu and check that out.

I should add, for teh Moronz, that I finally vacuumed up the wee-wee mess that she made the morning of her demise.
It was all covered with Arm & Hammer carpet powder stuff almost as soon as she made it.
So, anyway. I (finally!) vacuumed up that mess (worked like a charm!) and I also vacuumed up some of her fluffer-nutter.
That was awful!
Ever since I got her I have waged a war against her pernicious, ever-shedding, lovely, 3 types of amazing hair, mostly by shaving her ass down "for the summer months" and brushing her furiously, in between groomings.
It never worked. BTW.
I know that she's gone and I know that it was only a trick of perspective with the coffee table that allowed me to "not see" the evidence of her humiliating last days (covered with carpet powder, like I did).
I know that those "bits of fluff" wouldn't have been as big and white and fluffy, were she not so terribly ill at the time that she shed them.
I dunno why, but for the past couple of days, I let things sit and I looked at those bits of fluff from her with, something like, fondness....
So, I let the vacuum rip and did the necessary cleaning but I also vacuumed up her fluff.
I finally got what I always wanted!
Here is a direct, freshly vacuumed path to the back porch!
No worries about muddy paws tracking dirt in and out!
I am bereft.
Kind of makes me hyperventilate to look at it, right now.
