Overnight Open Thread - Temporary Stunt Version
— Maetenloch

Well our carefully crafted BCS (Blog Coordination System) has completely failed us again so y'all are stuck with this crappy last-minute desperation ONT. So enjoy!

The Year's 10 Most Popular Videos In Under 90 Seconds

How many of these can you recognize? I believe most of these have appeared on the blog at some point so you ought to recognize at least one or two of them. Well unless your name is Ace in which case these are all wonderful new internet discoveries.

The World Map of Social Networks
It turns out that Facebook doesn't rule the world - China, Russia, and India have their own social networks.

Attention Morons: New Year's Eve - The Night of the Year You're Most Likely to Have a One-Night Stand
So start laying your devious plans now. Helpful hint: chicks prefer beds with sheets on them. Also note that with the proper flavoring pure grain alcohol is almost entirely tasteless.

Congrats to Hugh Hefner and $(generic_blonde_girl)
Hefner, 84, announced on Twitter that he and his girlfriend Crystal Harris, 24, got engaged on Friday. This would only be his third marriage.
"When I gave Crystal the ring, she burst into tears. This is the happiest Christmas weekend in memory," Hefner tweeted.

Mark Steyn did a great bit on this "homeless family" a couple days ago.  They weren't actually homeless, they were traveling because they had to pay their tribute taxes to the Roman (i think) government.  Will offer this story next year every time I'm with my family and we pass a Nativity scene....assuming, of course, that Holder doesn't nix 'em all in the next 200 days.

146     "Aye," said Legolam, "the river is under a spell, for it is named after the fair elf-maid Nesselrode who had the hots for Menthol, God of After-Dinner Drinks. But the evil Oxydol, Goddess of Quick Tricks and Small Slams, appeared to her in the shape of a five-iron and told her that Menthol was two-timing with the Princess Phisohex, daughter of King Sano. At this Nesselrode became wroth and swore a great oath to kick Phisohex in the gut and get her mother, Cinerama, Goddess of Short-Term Loans, to turn Menthol into an erector set. But Menthol got wind of the plot and came to Nesselrode in the guise of a refrigerator, turned her into a river, and went west to sell encyclopedias. Even now, in the spring, the river softly cries, 'Menthol, Menthol, you are one wazoo. One day I'm the elf next door and then poof I'm a river. You stink.' And the wind answers, 'Phooey.'"
"A sad story," said Frito. "Is it true?"
    "No," said Legolam.'

= = =

The water was nowhere more than a few feet deep, and the boggies had little difficulty making their way across.
"This is indeed a queer river," said Bromosel, as the water lapped at his thighs.

In the eastern sky, Velveeta, beloved morning star of the elves and handmaid of the dawn, rose and greeted Noxzema, bringer of the flannel tongue, and clanging on her golden garbage pail, bade him make ready the winged rickshaw of Novocaine, herald of the day. Thence came rosy-eyeballed Ovaltine, she of the fluffy mouth, and lightly kissed the land east of the Seas. In other words, it was morning.

Actually, not only was that *stupid*, but think about Kenobi's supposed mental space. Your protege who you helped raise from childhood is slowly burning to death. What human being would not at least administer the coup de grace? The guy was on fire for God's sake.

"I loved you!!!" - Obi Wan

*Anakin screaming during his immolation*

Oh, and lets not forget one of the most ignorant short phrases in all of cinematic history was uttered by Obi Wan:  "Only a Sith deals in absolutes".

People can write entire theses on why this statement is terrible, even on just everything we know about the Star Wars universe, not to mention how stupid this statement, and its implications, are in real life.

We had our annual visit from our four-year-old grandson today. Born to our daughter out of wedlock, she and his father placed their baby in an open adoption and we are blessed to see him once or twice a year

Wow, that's awesome you guys get to see him!

We did and I hope you and yours did as well!

We did too!  We actually got to go to my inlaws because one of my co-workers took part of my call. I'm on call until 7 a.m., and I'm hoping we can make it through the night without working!

We had a great (but full of excess) Christmas.  We went down to the inlaws early Friday a.m., and we got home from there on Christmas night around 10:30.  I ate way too much and haven't run since Thursday.  Mr. runningrn and I are going tomorrow a.m. at 7:01 (when my call is over!)

From OH Dan's link:

Prosecutor Keith Watanabe said the sentence calls for Malil to be eligible for parole in 12 years, but he said Malil could be freed in as few as nine years taking into account time already served and good behavior.

Malil, 45, testified at trial that he visited Kendra Beebe at her San Marcos home in suburban San Diego in August 2008 to apologize for taking personal items from her house and to warn that he e-mailed sexually explicit photos of the couple to her co-workers. He stabbed her with a kitchen knife after finding her drinking wine with another man, authorities said.

That's one thing.  I've never heard any of them complain. In fact, they never even really talked about it until the Reagan reparations.  Not one of them is bitter about it.  Their children (all left, some moonbats), however are very angry and bitter.  You'd think it was them that were locked away at Minidoka.  My mom and dad never spoke of it til my sister learned about it in H.S. and asked.  My dad's family suffered horribly (his dad was thrown in federal prison because he was a Japanese born businessman in the timber import/export industry with Japan) and his mom committed suicide because she thought she said something that got him in trouble when the FBI questioned her.  It was really sad for my dad who was taken in by his Uncle and Aunt and taken to camp with them and their daughter.

When my Grandpa got out of prison, he faced possible deportation and a custody battle for his son (my Great Uncle and Great Aunt wanted to adopt him because they always wanted a son, and they had him as a son for several years).

Still, when you consider how much information about WWII is floating around the media it is amazing for how much WWII history is not.

I don't know that I call it ironic. Basically since Jews had been present for a thousand years, everyone in Germany had the blood if you were technical about it.

What it was really all about is to have an enemy to use as a threat and justification for whatever you did. The Jewish were the internal threat, the Communists the external threat.

Hitler personally issued over 100 Deutschblütigkeitserklärung or German Blood Certificates to Jews and "mixed race" citizens - exempting them from all of Nazi Germany's antisemetic laws. Many of these folks actually went on to become generals in the Wehrmacht.

Well its not as if it was solely a Jewish thing though, they were just the main target.  I did the Holocaust Museum in the 8th grade and they handed out a card about a person in the camps and mine wasn't a Jew but a French soldier.  So I can easily see Hitler making exemptions for any good little Jew that would happily help with slaughtering his brothers.

Well, the German leadership wasn't too fond of Catholics that took their faith seriously. Probably the most visible anti-NAZI in Europe before the war was Archbishop Galen.

He opposed Hitler on "euthanasia" for the handicapped and almost got himself sent to a camp for it. In fact, it was a running debate in the Fuhrer's inner circle whether eliminating him, even in the middle of WWII, was worth the likely Catholic revolt it would have caused in Germany...

I mean you had true "Jews suck" -line believers but you had a lot of folks who didn't give a shit - including the very people in charge.

The people in charge were, by and large, fanatical Jew haters.  There were a few exceptions -- the evidence says that Heydrich was ambitious and ruthless, but not a visceral Jew hater.   Goering seems to have gone along wihout any personal anti-Semitic convictions.

Eichmann is a puzzle.  Hannah Arendt perceived him as a technocrat with no anit-Semitism in his blood at all, but other witnesses report that he was violently anti-Semitic.

Hitler, Goebbels, Himmler, Bormann and Rosenberg were all pathological haters of Jews to the very end..

It wasn't a matter of convenience for Hitler.  Right up to the time he blew his brains out in the bunker, he railed against the Jews and warned Germans of the need to destroy them.

Myself and one other student were pulled aside after the finals and shown the speech, made by Hitler in 1932.  So those "dude, Hitler" moonbats could easily be swayed to vote for Hitler if you hide the name

The Mufti was in cahoots with the Nazis.

There are very few other examples of such protests leading to changes during the Nazi period. There's another reference I recall reading somewhere about a group of German women who were being separated from their Jewsih husbands (who were to be transported to death camps) at a train station. They caused a massive scene and the local police wanted to gun them all down (in public). He received orders from Joseph Goebbles to let them (and their husbands) go and they all survived the war.

There's a movie about that.

Til late in the 30s Mussolinin had Jews holding high positions in the Fascist Party.  It was a major source of anoyance between Mussolini and Hitler.  However, Mussolini doesn't get a pass; laer the Italian Fascists cooperated with the Nazis in rounding up Italian Jews.

Well, he probably didn't. But he was an ill-prepared pussy totally subserviant to Germany for protection because of his and his army's incompetance (and his own hubris in not understanding said incompetance). So he complied like a good little servant.

He actually did, I just binged it.  He didn't send the Italian Jews to Germany which caused a little friction.  He did end their citizenship rights after a while, but still they were not killed.  Some were sent to labor camps, but the majority of them survived WWII.

He might have been telling the truth, as hate is a human emotion that we all hold for someone or something.  Someone with a soul as dead as Eichmann was probably incapable of love or hate. To him it was nothing more than killing chickens, and you don't kill chickens out of hate. Not that it makes any difference to the chicken

The movie made by the German women who protested in masse over the internment of their Jewish husbands is called "Rosenstrasse".  From the back cover of the DVD via Amazon:

In the cold Berlin winter of 1943, hundreds of women stood, and waited, in defiance of the Nazis. While countless Jews were being sent to concentration camps for execution, Jewish husbands of Aryan wives suffered a different fate; they were separated from their families and imprisoned in a factory on a street named Rosenstrasse. On that street these women stood in protest, in the name of love until they were reunited with their men. This is the striking story of Rosenstrasse: where the power of the human will stands inconquerable - for hope, dignity and love.

Well my great aunt was taken while in italy, along with some other family. I don't know how they managed it, but they escaped. Well  actually, from what I heard they hid in a cart, or truck full of dead bodies, and when it got driven out they went with it and somehow bailed when it was safe. Still, no clue how they pulled it off, they were lucky. This was my grandmother's sister. My grandmother came over here in 1938, but her sister stayed. Talk about a bad choice..jeez.

While its nice to find the few elements that protested, the real lesson about the rise of Nazism is how seamlessly the left and moderate socialists fit into the system and carried its programs forward where the Nazis couldn't do themselves. In those days there was no "right wing" as we understand it in Germany or Europe, of course.

And it won't be the freethinking left that opposes anything similar here in the US.

502 I have a "fun" story about the DC Holocaust Museum. I went to visit for the first time and stood in line for the metal detector like everyone else. I walked through the metal detector first with my friend and his two sisters behind me. As soon as I pass through the metal detector and turn to reach for my purse, the security guards are suddenly herding me and the people in front of me into the gift shop - and I didn't have a chance to grab my purse which had my phone and my wallet in it. My friend told me after that he and the rest of the line were forced back outside and around the corner. So a handful of us waited in the gift shop for about 10 minutes until they gave us the all clear. Never did find out what they saw that freaked them out.

Right, but that really only applied to Catherine and Anne. He divorced Catherine and married Anne. Only one of the wives after Anne was decapitated. Jane Seymour died of childbed fever and Anne of Cleves was sent back to Germany because the king was repulsed by her looks. Kathryn Howard was beheaded and Catherine Parr outlived him.

It's actually pretty simple to explain the weather of the last month. A relatively strong positive NAO + a moderately negative PNA. The NAO has now gone positive or is heading there and much warmer air will move into the East the next few weeks.

I look at it this way - there is no way to really predict the weather a week in advance much less a hundred years. And it's arrogant and presumptuous to think that puny little humans can have a major impact on global climate. You'd think Katrina, the Indonesian tsunamis and earthquakes and such would prove to people that the planet could wipe us out rather easily if it were so inclined.

627 Global warming is making the heat come on again as I type, it hasn't gotten over 50 here today in SW FL

It's supposed to go from 20 degrees below normal to 20 degrees above normal by New Year's Eve.  Of course 15 years in SoCal got me accustomed to those temperature swings

Posted by: kbdabear at December 26, 2010 11:06 PM (vdfwz)

628

I hate these sort of things from both sides. It's so overly simplistic. You can't talk about macro weather trends based upon whether winter is colder than normal for a month. Yet it's done both by the AGW folks and the more rational ones. Which makes it sound like I'm saying fuck you. But no...just fuck that line of thinking. Perhaps I could word that better so apologies in advance.

I think that part of the reason it comes from our side is that the global warming side has done it for everything!  Drought in July? Global Warming!  Floods in April? Global Warming!  Large number of hurricanes? Global Warming!  Fewer hurricanes? Global Warming!  Exceptional cold December? Global Warming!

If they're doing that why not just start shoving it back in their faces when they make claims like "Snow in Virginia in December is now history" or whatever stupid shit they claim.

635 One of the ways this is dealt with is that in the "long term" time period, the deterministic forecast models aren't used. Instead, the computer is fed a set of multiuple data points, computes every outcome and spits out the mean. This is called the "Ensemble" model.

Depends on what the computers are fed. Garbage in, garbage out

If you ever want to see an example of this, look up the "gfs spaghetti plot". This gives you a plot of the location of the 540 and 588 height lines at 500 millibars. The significance of that is less important in this example. Anyway - take a look at them. They start pretty consistent - looking like two lines. As the time period advances, they diverge and you end up not with two lines on a map but with 50 in every direction.

Which reinforces your point  I guess. I just thought I'd use it as an example.

Posted by: Zombie Goering at December 27, 2010 03:11 AM (uCjoj)

Numerical error in floating point calculations tends to make these kinds of thing even more of a joke. Even if the model is a good one, error propogation tends to make these things fall to pieces, and the more you add the worse it gets.
