"When I gave Crystal the ring, she burst into tears. This is the happiest Christmas weekend in memory," Hefner tweeted.

In the eastern sky, Velveeta, beloved morning star of the elves and handmaid of the dawn, rose and greeted Noxzema, bringer of the flannel tongue, and clanging on her golden garbage pail, bade him make ready the winged rickshaw of Novocaine, herald of the day. Thence came rosy-eyeballed Ovaltine, she of the fluffy mouth, and lightly kissed the land east of the Seas. In other words, it was morning.

Perhaps it was, given Lucas' penchant of giving his characters terrible names. Such as "General Grievous", "Count Dooku", Padme...so on and so forth.

Oh, and lets not forget one of the most ignorant short phrases in all of cinematic history was uttered by Obi Wan: "Only a Sith deals in absolutes".

From OH Dan's link:
Prosecutor Keith Watanabe said the sentence calls for Malil to be eligible for parole in 12 years, but he said Malil could be freed in as few as nine years taking into account time already served and good behavior.
Malil, 45, testified at trial that he visited Kendra Beebe at her San Marcos home in suburban San Diego in August 2008 to apologize for taking personal items from her house and to warn that he e-mailed sexually explicit photos of the couple to her co-workers. He stabbed her with a kitchen knife after finding her drinking wine with another man, authorities said.

A buddy of mine was a homicide detective on the Seattle PD. His very first case found him in a house on Beacon Hill with a whale of a woman laying on the floor with 20 holes in her. The husband was sitting on the couch watching TV. When they asking him what had happened he said, "I shot her. It was an accident."
"20-times?"
Sure! Statistically, the leading cause of deaths at home is accidents.

That's one thing. I've never heard any of them complain. In fact, they never even really talked about it until the Reagan reparations. Not one of them is bitter about it. Their children (all left, some moonbats), however are very angry and bitter. You'd think it was them that were locked away at Minidoka. My mom and dad never spoke of it til my sister learned about it in H.S. and asked. My dad's family suffered horribly (his dad was thrown in federal prison because he was a Japanese born businessman in the timber import/export industry with Japan) and his mom committed suicide because she thought she said something that got him in trouble when the FBI questioned her. It was really sad for my dad who was taken in by his Uncle and Aunt and taken to camp with them and their daughter.
When my Grandpa got out of prison, he faced possible deportation and a custody battle for his son (my Great Uncle and Great Aunt wanted to adopt him because they always wanted a son, and they had him as a son for several years).

Didn't FDR forbid several groups of Jews from seeking refuge here before (during?) the war? I seem to recall reading something about that and wondering why Jews still vote for Dems en masse.
I would guess that since many death camps were liberated by the Soviets that Jews became a lot more suspectable to Soviet propaganda about the nefarious "right-wing" national socialists.

Yup. There were several huge ocean liners that were turned away. One of them made it to Florida where they sat for weeks to months trying to get let in. They were sent back to Germany and eventually exterminated.

Still, when you consider how much information about WWII is floating around the media it is amazing for how much WWII history is not.
For example, I'd don't think the "pre-mature anti-fascist" line would fly very well on college campuses if everyone knew the Soviets were allied with the Germans prior to Barbarossa. The "Non Aggression Pact" was rather more then that...

FDR ran as the candidate who was *not* going to send American boys to fight a European war. Of course he was also "illegally" attacking German subs at the same time.
I used to mention this a lot when the Left was going on about "illegal wars". The only response I could really get was it was ok because FDR did it, and "dude, Nazis".

I don't know that I call it ironic. Basically since Jews had been present for a thousand years, everyone in Germany had the blood if you were technical about it.
What it was really all about is to have an enemy to use as a threat and justification for whatever you did. The Jewish were the internal threat, the Communists the external threat.
Posted by: Oldcat at December 26, 2010 09:30 PM (CN+Qv)
Hitler personally issued over 100 Deutschblütigkeitserklärung or German Blood Certificates to Jews and "mixed race" citizens - exempting them from all of Nazi Germany's antisemetic laws. Many of these folks actually went on to become generals in the Wehrmacht.
Well its not as if it was solely a Jewish thing though, they were just the main target. I did the Holocaust Museum in the 8th grade and they handed out a card about a person in the camps and mine wasn't a Jew but a French soldier. So I can easily see Hitler making exemptions for any good little Jew that would happily help with slaughtering his brothers.

Well, the German leadership wasn't too fond of Catholics that took their faith seriously. Probably the most visible anti-NAZI in Europe before the war was Archbishop Galen.
He opposed Hitler on "euthanasia" for the handicapped and almost got himself sent to a camp for it. In fact, it was a running debate in the Fuhrer's inner circle whether eliminating him, even in the middle of WWII, was worth the likely Catholic revolt it would have caused in Germany...

I mean you had true "Jews suck" -line believers but you had a lot of folks who didn't give a shit - including the very people in charge.
The people in charge were, by and large, fanatical Jew haters. There were a few exceptions -- the evidence says that Heydrich was ambitious and ruthless, but not a visceral Jew hater. Goering seems to have gone along wihout any personal anti-Semitic convictions.
Eichmann is a puzzle. Hannah Arendt perceived him as a technocrat with no anit-Semitism in his blood at all, but other witnesses report that he was violently anti-Semitic.
Hitler, Goebbels, Himmler, Bormann and Rosenberg were all pathological haters of Jews to the very end..

The Mufti was in cahoots with the Nazis.
There are very few other examples of such protests leading to changes during the Nazi period. There's another reference I recall reading somewhere about a group of German women who were being separated from their Jewsih husbands (who were to be transported to death camps) at a train station. They caused a massive scene and the local police wanted to gun them all down (in public). He received orders from Joseph Goebbles to let them (and their husbands) go and they all survived the war.
There's a movie about that.

Til late in the 30s Mussolinin had Jews holding high positions in the Fascist Party. It was a major source of anoyance between Mussolini and Hitler. However, Mussolini doesn't get a pass; laer the Italian Fascists cooperated with the Nazis in rounding up Italian Jews.

Well, he probably didn't. But he was an ill-prepared pussy totally subserviant to Germany for protection because of his and his army's incompetance (and his own hubris in not understanding said incompetance). So he complied like a good little servant.
He actually did, I just binged it. He didn't send the Italian Jews to Germany which caused a little friction. He did end their citizenship rights after a while, but still they were not killed. Some were sent to labor camps, but the majority of them survived WWII.

When captured by the Israelis and questioned, Eichmann insisted over and over that he didn't hate the Jews.
He might have been telling the truth, as hate is a human emotion that we all hold for someone or something. Someone with a soul as dead as Eichmann was probably incapable of love or hate. To him it was nothing more than killing chickens, and you don't kill chickens out of hate. Not that it makes any difference to the chicken

The movie made by the German women who protested in masse over the internment of their Jewish husbands is called "Rosenstrasse". From the back cover of the DVD via Amazon:
In the cold Berlin winter of 1943, hundreds of women stood, and waited, in defiance of the Nazis. While countless Jews were being sent to concentration camps for execution, Jewish husbands of Aryan wives suffered a different fate; they were separated from their families and imprisoned in a factory on a street named Rosenstrasse. On that street these women stood in protest, in the name of love until they were reunited with their men. This is the striking story of Rosenstrasse: where the power of the human will stands inconquerable - for hope, dignity and love.

While its nice to find the few elements that protested, the real lesson about the rise of Nazism is how seamlessly the left and moderate socialists fit into the system and carried its programs forward where the Nazis couldn't do themselves. In those days there was no "right wing" as we understand it in Germany or Europe, of course.
And it won't be the freethinking left that opposes anything similar here in the US.

Tangentially related, my lib friend who lives in SF and I were discussing were discussing the BART cop shooting and she said she actually feels bad for the cop. I sort of expected her to have the automatic knee jerk visceral anti-cop reaction to the whole thing as her friends all think the cop's a cold blooded murderer. She said she has more sympathy for the cop than the guy he shot since that guy obviously wasn't guilt free.

The last time I visited DC...excepting this most recent SNAFU...my brother and my step-father and I toured the Marine Corps Museum in Quantico. Awesome stuff, I highly recommend it for everyone who doesn't think America sucks. My grandfather was part of the group that took Iwo, so it's a pretty stressful experience to walk through that museum.

Probably. They love to claim that the miracle workers of the Bible were actually using alien technology. I enjoyed the commercial for ancient aliens where they wanted to claim DaVinci's ideas came from aliens. We can promise you perfect weather if you just give us enough of your money. The debate is OVER, experts with credentials say so

If they only cover what they did before, the coasters still wouldnt care about flyover country.

I look at it this way - there is no way to really predict the weather a week in advance much less a hundred years. And it's arrogant and presumptuous to think that puny little humans can have a major impact on global climate. You'd think Katrina, the Indonesian tsunamis and earthquakes and such would prove to people that the planet could wipe us out rather easily if it were so inclined.

It's supposed to go from 20 degrees below normal to 20 degrees above normal by New Year's Eve. Of course 15 years in SoCal got me accustomed to those temperature swings
Posted by: kbdabear at December 26, 2010 11:06 PM (vdfwz)
I hate these sort of things from both sides. It's so overly simplistic. You can't talk about macro weather trends based upon whether winter is colder than normal for a month. Yet it's done both by the AGW folks and the more rational ones. Which makes it sound like I'm saying fuck you. But no...just fuck that line of thinking. Perhaps I could word that better so apologies in advance.
I think that part of the reason it comes from our side is that the global warming side has done it for everything! Drought in July? Global Warming! Floods in April? Global Warming! Large number of hurricanes? Global Warming! Fewer hurricanes? Global Warming! Exceptional cold December? Global Warming!
If they're doing that why not just start shoving it back in their faces when they make claims like "Snow in Virginia in December is now history" or whatever stupid shit they claim.

Just claim something else. Old claims never happened.
Heck, two weeks ago SoCal had a big week of rain. Last week, they predicted even worse rain. Didn't happen. This week, who knows what they will predict.

Depends on what the computers are fed. Garbage in, garbage out
Posted by: kbdabear at December 26, 2010 11:14 PM (vdfwz)
One of the ways this is dealt with is that in the "long term" time period, the deterministic forecast models aren't used. Instead, the computer is fed a set of multiuple data points, computes every outcome and spits out the mean. This is called the "Ensemble" model.
If you ever want to see an example of this, look up the "gfs spaghetti plot". This gives you a plot of the location of the 540 and 588 height lines at 500 millibars. The significance of that is less important in this example. Anyway - take a look at them. They start pretty consistent - looking like two lines. As the time period advances, they diverge and you end up not with two lines on a map but with 50 in every direction.
Which reinforces your point I guess. I just thought I'd use it as an example.

Numerical error in floating point calculations tends to make these kinds of thing even more of a joke. Even if the model is a good one, error propogation tends to make these things fall to pieces, and the more you add the worse it gets.

Quite pleasant in Freising. -4°C yesterday afternoon, we went for a walk in the woods by the Isar.
Was at a dinner party last night (meat fondue) with a couple who believe all the 'green' stuff, think Ahnold did a bang-up job implementing new restrictions on water and energy and plastic bags and fire in California, and look forward to Gov. Moonbeam continuing the good work. I smiled and had another Schnapps.
OK, I feel better now that I've had some contact with reality. Time for breakfast.

No. I am here. I am filled with a rage. I want these Obama people to hurt like I hurt. I want them on food stamps. I want them monkey hammered so hard that they won't remember their mother's maiden name. Oprah, Chris Buckley, Colin Powell, Mort Zuckerman, Chris Matthews, Warren fucking Buffett. The entirely unholy of lot them. I want them to be taxed until they bleed out their fucking ears. I want them to wake in the trunk of a car wondering what the fuck happened.
Is that so wrong?

Don't you guys know that trashing Carrot Top and Gallagher is hack by now?
I saw Carrot Top live in Vegas this past September. Awesome show. A tremendous standup comic. Not just props, either. It's a multi-media extravaganza. It's at the Luxor, if you're ever in Vegas... and you have a mind of your own and you don't just swallow the opinion of some recycled snark website.
Fortunately, the link to that leech site didn't work.
P.S.: He's a great guy besides.

LOL, I made the top ten while being gone for three days and drunker than crap yesterday?
M&Ms are getting slack!!!
Its 22.7° now and the local weather says it is not going to get much warmer today.
And watching Fox (yes dick in the door) fair and balanced talk with commie/Dem saying Sarah Palin cost Republicans the Senate. (keep that in mind you Sarah h8ters)
Oh and he says "saying this snow is the end of global warming is idiotic and we just came off the warmest year in history"
Good God, these lying assholes have no shame.
