RUN-DMC Wishing You a Merry "Christmas in Hollis"
I remember seeing this on MTV back when it first came out. Back in a kinder, gentler time when MTV actually showed music videos, rap wasn't all angry and gangsta, and Ronnie was in the White House.
So South Korea is going to start live-fire exercises on Yeonpyeong Island within a few hours. North Korea has vowed to respond and bring "catastrophe" to South Korea. Efforts to defuse the situation through diplomacy have failed and neither side is going to back down. So uh, good times, good times.
Frankly I've had enough of Nork provocations and if the crisis has to come, better it happen when we've had a few weeks to prepare and US forces have surged toward the Korean peninsula.

This picture comes from Doug Ross's site and yes that is a burqa and yes she really is a TSA agent. I wonder if she has to feel up passengers' junk. And if not, why not?

Julian Assange Decries Leaks of His Personal Information
Chutzpah:
Bjorn Hurtig, Mr Assange's Swedish lawyer, said he would lodge a formal complaint to the authorities and ask them to investigate how such sensitive police material leaked into the public domain. "It is with great concern that I hear about this because it puts Julian and his defence in a bad position," he told a colleague.

Can someone explain the concept on the Santa Clause ad for stockings? Is there a reason that Santa has waited for the lovely to climb up a ladder before he hands her a gift? What's she supposed to do with it, spike it onto the treetop or open it while standing on the ladder?

NEW YORK—The National Hockey League announced Thursday that it had finished freezing an estimated 480,000 gallons of water, ensuring that every opening game of the 2010-2011 season would be played completely on ice.
Ice-making factories have reportedly been working around the clock for the better part of a month, and dozens of insulated trucks were employed to transport the slabs of frozen water to all 30 professional hockey arenas, some of which are located as far south as Los Angeles, CA or Sunrise, FL.
"We learned our lesson last year," NHL commissioner Gary Bettman told reporters. "We started freezing water a week before the season, and by the opening face-off only eight arenas had ice. It was embarrassing because not only did we not deliver as an organization, but you really need to play hockey on water that is frozen."
"We also now completely understand—and agree—that all parts of the rink have to be covered with ice," Bettman added. "Even the parts behind the nets."

So then, we go upstairs and Ron morphs into a tall scarlet-haired warrior woman named.... Scarlet. And I think she was supposed to carry a scythe, but she never used it because she sucked.
Okay, so then we're in this tunnel thing, that opened up (from both ends) into the vacuum of outer space, which didn't affect us in anyway, somehow. And then we're standing on the edge of the thing waiting for the Boss Monster to show up. And it wasn't just the boss monster of the video game, or the world.... it was the Boss Monster of the Entire Universe. And its name was... Jumbo Cat. (I shit you not). Imagine an orange tabby inflated into the shape of a globe a good fifty feet high. For a cat-balloon, it was the toughest boss fight ever. I am whipping out guns and giant swords and all kinds of crap, and wailing on it for an hour (and Scarlet isn't helping me at all, because apparently she was useless-female-side-character-chick), and I kept getting it down to half health and then it just regenerated. And unlike video game boss monsters, it could just transform into whatever it felt like, and it never used the same attack twice, so I couldn't prepare for its moves.
Eventually it beats me, and I give up, and the universe starts to end. So me and Scarlet are standing around on this platform in the middle of outer space, just waiting for Jumbo Cat to fly towards us and implode and end the world. And then my mom randomly shows up, and she's chillin' with us too, like "Hey guys, what's up?"
And we're like, "Not much, just waiting for our fiery deaths."
So then I'm like "Screw this, might as well dive into death head first." And we all jump off the platform into a pretty swirly vortex of doom. But then! Instead of the world ending, it was like I got to choose the crappy "alternate ending" for people who suck, where a helicopter randomly shows up (in the vacuum of space, mind you) and rescues us, and takes us back to this giant spaceship thing, where half the human race had been living while they went off to colonize the universe.
But the spaceship is on the way back to Earth after like 20 years, because... I dunno, they were bored of colonizing or something. And when we got back, we're docking on this cool space station thingy that was kind of.... projecting off the side of the planet. And I'm walking along on a bridge, which is, again, just sort of open, with void beneath it. And I discovered that I could make it bounce and there was no railing, so I could see out into these swirly galaxies and novas and things.
Then I went into the space station and I randomly had an adopted sister who was black, or something, and after that it got boring, and eventually I woke up.
Wow, that was long. Sorry.

The Patriots defense is short three defensive linemen, two linebackers, and a DB. And they've been on the field for 40 minutes already. The standing around thing, that's acceptable, considering the alternative is laying on the turf crying for oxygen and cheeseburgers.

And the think that drives me nuts about these sort of things is calling Obama a socialist is not the same thing as calling Palin a moron.
"Socialist" is not merely an ad hominem and treating it as such defeats the whole idea of politics. If calling an ideology by its name is so poisonous to debate, perhaps we should talk about why it is, or is not, a bad thing that Obama is a socialist instead if just pretending we can make words mean whatever we want them to?

That does contradict the Rimmer Law of Hair:
Rimmer: Well, I'm no stranger to the land of scoff. Perhaps you'd like to explain to me why it is that every major battle in history has been won by the side with the shortest haircut.
Kryten: Oh, surely not, sir!
Rimmer: Think about it! Why did the US cavalry beat the Indian nation? Short back and sides versus girly-hippie locks. The Cavaliers and the Roundheads, 1-0 to the pudding-basins. Vietnam, crew-cuts both sides, no score draw.

You could do a short newsletter to enclose with the cards. Even very short, just "I moved! Here's my new info: da da da da" Cut 'em up into small papers if that works. Business card is not that great an idea, imho.

Old Borscht Belt joke:
Mrs. Feldman is introduced to Mrs. Grossberg and Mrs. Katz, and they talk about their kids -- Mrs. Goldberg is proud of her son the doctor, and Mrs. Katz of her boy the lawyer. "So, what does your son do, Mrs. Feldman?"
"He's the President of a public relations firm," she proudly announces.
The other two women mutter, "That's nice, that's nice," and an awkward silence follows.
Mrs. Feldman says, "Oh, look at the time -- I've got to go. A pleasure meeting you ladies."
As Mrs. Feldman leaves, Mrs. Grossberg mutters to Mrs. Katz, "Did you ever hear such a thing?"
Mrs. Katz replies, "I know! 'Relations,' I understand. 'Public,' I understand. But relations in public? What is this world coming to?"

Address them to the "Finkledorf Family".
Even if it's just a couple, with no kids or grown kids off in the 4 corners of the world, this is kind of a standard Christmastime greeting and means of address.
At worst, Janette or Jeannine or Gertrude or whatever the fuck that Harpy's name is, will label you as a hide-bound traditionalist but at least she won't be "offended" by your not sending a card.
Give Gertrude a reason to rail against the Patriarchy. You'll never have to hear it!
Besides, no matter how closely these types monitor the inflow and outflow of Christmas cards and the way they are addressed, it still leaves leaves them with many empty hours to fill.
Also, this may present an opportunity for the husbands of these wives to "get some" by lamenting with their wives about what a colossal neanderthal douchebag you must be and how much better they are in comparison!

Yeah, there was a part on that, which I immediately put out of my mind.
The point at which I realized what a colossal waste of money it all was, was when we were watching this idiotic video... which was supposed to show how.. dumb Americans are insensitive to other cultures, or somesuch. And in this video, they had an American businessman, who is, of course, a dumb southerner in a huge coyboy hat, meeting with these Japanese businessmen, and they're bowing all politely, and he walks up and bearhugs the fuck out of them. Srsly.
And I'm sitting there, amazed that we were supposed to take this shit seriously, thinking "Uh, yeah, if he did that to another American, they wouldn't be particularly happy about it either, you dumb fuck."
I always love how the only people in America are black or from Texas.

You know the other thing I've always hated hearing about that bullshit. We're always supposed to be the culturally respectable ones. ALWAYS. When they come here we're supposed to greet them according to their customs and go along with their protocols. And if you travel to their country its the exact same way. I've never heard those who preach this sort of garbage talk about the situations when we're supposed to get them to follow our cultural norms.

Regulatory expansion, overreach, bigger gubmint for no fucking reason. Like we have this big problem with food saftey? And the feds are going to step in and make sure the incredibly infrequent outbreak of food bourne illness is more infrequent. Cuz they're going to go around and inspect and shit. You think that's going to keep the occasional outbreak of salmonella from happening? Meanwhile, people are going to be put out of business. "Last thing you want me to do is, "be passionate"!
"If I'm ever going to try and sell this hairball of lunacy and abject stupidity is for me to act all sphinx-like and bullshit the other morons at the table into thinking that I'm coming from a position of wisdom and intellectual superiority."
"You don't believe in our principles? This is unacceptable! We need a new actor!"
"You've got no bench!"
"Also, you are lucky to have me! I think that your policy recommendations are supremely silly but that's because, unlike most actors I'm highly literate and intellectually curious. That's how I know that the arguments from the other teams are as deeply silly and flawed as your own!"
"This is serious!"
"No, it's not. It's a fucking game!"
"Do you want to WIN or not?"
"You really studied the other teams' briefs?"
"Well, yeah. Improv is improv but you have to at least know where and when someone is likely to come on stage and why...
"They are at best equally as stupid as yours, for what it's worth."
"Or, if you want some genuine "passion" injected into this faux deliberation, you could go with that twitchy, buck-toothed Philippina chick, over there in the corner, with the unfortunate glasses that is part of your policy drafting team".
"Do you want to WIN, or not!"
"Why would you even participate in something you think is such an obvious scam?"
"I'm competitive.
What can I say?"
"Oh, hell! Go in and WIN it! Those guys are douchebags!"
*I did WIN it. Possibly in part due to acting prowess, possibly in part due to forensic skills, certainly nothing to do with the policy I was charged with promoting.
Heh.

Hey!
Some of us just plain have very little natural ability when it come to maths.
Despite the handicap of having my times tables kind of permanently fucked up since 4th grade and my confidence in basic arithmetic shaken to it's core, I managed to complete some higher level math courses not only in college but to tutor them afterwards!
Look. I know that there are some people who can read Maxwell's writings and know what the fuck he is talking about on first glance. I had to "cheat" and buy books like Div, Grad, Curl and All That, just to keep up!
It was worthwhile but I'll have to say, it takes a bit of work for the maths challenged to even try to be part of the conversation.
I don't excuse the self proclaimed "math-phobics".
It's a cheap label for a combination of poor training and low expectations that leads to excusing intellectual laziness.
That being said...
No matter how hard or diligently I could have ever worked, there was some stuff that was entirely beyond my grasp.
This doesn't gall me though.
I gave it my best shot and ran the race as hard as I could, even though I never heard the starting gun until I was well into my 20's!
I suppose it's like running track in HS with someone who is going to go on to win some Medals in the Olympics?
Just a different class.
You go girl (socially retarded but brilliant guy)!

The Senate unanimously passed it, meaning it was McConnell and his gang who rolled:
In Sunday-evening surprise, Senate unanimously passes food safety bill
Democrats first attempted to attach the food safety bill to the two-and-a-half-month spending measure but Republicans balked because they wanted to keep that measure clean, according to Senate aides.
Republicans, however, later agreed to pass it by unanimous consent.
Reid announced he would send the legislation — this time properly attached to a House-originated measure — back to the lower chamber for final approval.

At one point in my undergraduate career I had the opportunity to voluntarily view a film of a live vivisection of some dogs that had been floating around the Biology sciences for about 40 years and gain some insight into the pulmonary system in mammals.
I declined the invite, on the principle that vivisection is always wrong and did not wish to support it, even decades later, after the fact.
Now?
I kind of wonder...
Should we not at least keep learning from those horrific experiments?
I'm kind of alarmed to find that these films are not just not offered anymore but possibly illegal!

When I was a Freshman, this was before the world wide web fucking existed and every sort of sick possible fetish being promoted at the tunes of billions of $$ was not available for review in everone's home.
Do I want to see that vivisection video available on YouTube?
No.
Should it be screened and available for undergraduates undertaking an animal dissection?
Yes.
I chose not to view it, many of my classmates chose otherwise.
I have always liked knowing that it was an option.
Nothing out of bounds.
I could never be a surgeon!
Even the easy stuff like separating fur from skin, from fat from muscle, from nerves from, organs where you don't really have to worry about the skeleton makes me want to barf!!!
Sure, sure! I can get all focused and shit and do some close scalpel work on some delicate organs but I hate it, and it grosses me out!
Man, that "Sheep Pluck" experiment where we were supposed to "inflate" that fucking greasy-assed set of lungs and heart, with a straw, almost set me over the fucking edge!

Well, Otis.
I'd sooner have any creature vivisected rather than you!
The fact is, is that there have been vivisections done and filmed for educational purposes.
Which is worse?
Refusing to watch such a horror or refusing to learn from it?
I took the easy way out.
What about all those poor doggies that got vivisected? 3 decades before I was ever borne?
That would completely suck ass if they got shoved under the rug like they never existed at all!

Look, someone had to figure out how to open people up and fix them, and it seems unarguable that when choosing between opening up live animals or live people, the former is the lesser of the two evils.
Thank God for people who stare death in the face every day, so that they might preserve life. It is a blessed calling. It's simply that it is not my calling.

It's NOT okay.
But if has already been done by some monsters in the 1950's why not take a look?
My understanding of this Freeze- Dried, shot full of presrvatives, feline specimen on my bench, is pretty much predicated on the works of others, no?
I chose not to view those films.
I didn't think that I could handle them (emotionally) at the time.
But they were there.
That's what's important!
I am more terrified that my Alma Mater has likely stopped screening those films due to PC pressure!
I never went to see those "bad films".
Didn't want to!
I'm very concerned that they are not being shown at all anymore!

I used to hate this time of the year at work. We had one major unit who always schedule their major tasks to come due at the end of the year.
What that did was make them put off working on it until the end of the year. When they did their work finally they needed help from my unit to complete their shit. They would come to us with most of out people on vacation after busting ass to make sure all work was complete first and demand we help them with their overdue shit.
When we told them tough stuff they would go to senior management and say they needed an extension because of "our lack of support".
Such is the punishment for working for a large company. One of the many things I do not miss.

Meh. Nothing cuter than a box fish (read puffer), they have the most adorable, kissy faces, with big cow eyes, and the way they whir their little helicopter fins when you find them out in their hidey-holes is almost heartrendingly adorable.
I've never seen one of them "puff up", like a balloon, BTW...
I've seen pictures, so I know it can happen but what kind of bastard would want to instantiate that sort of extreme reaction in such a gentle trusting soul?
Me?
I don't eat Caribbean sourced lobster because I spent 9mo. cleaning the fucking SCUBA gear of fucking peasants who were not allowed basic fucking dive safety principals or tables on pain of a damn beating!
I had to go to a local resort to get certified physically by the local Dive Doc (My EARS might have been a problem).
"There was somebody in the DECO chamber!"
"Who was outside?"
"Two really sick dudes!"
"What did they look like? How old are they?"
"Fuckin' lobster divers. What's the point? 18 or 81 They all look the same all cramped up on the dock waiting for a chance at the chamber."
"Christ! Sometimes I fuckin' hate this island!"
"Next time I clean out a regulator "promise me" I get to shove it through some jack-holes fucking teeth!"
I like Carribean lobsters and they like me!
I can coax them out like little kitty cats anytime I WANT TO.

"Don't you find this educational?!?"
"Well, yeah! Mostly... Are you sure you and your wife are Canadian?
"You sound Scottish to me...
"Shut the fuck up and clean up that valve like I tuaght ewe.."

Ours is female and less than a year old.
Ours, too -- sweetly high-strung smaller shepherd/sheltie stray mix we rescued from "the dog house" downtown some months after our dear lab passed away last New Year. We just don't want to tempt beyond her ability to understand "no touch" yet. She's smart as a whip, and does like to please and "be good as good can be" unless something catches her fancy to "kill" with the death shake (my vegetable garden greens seem irresistable). As far as being housebroken, she's amazing. She won't do any business at all except in her own backyard spot, never attempts to relieve herself on walks. Definitely not male.
