WTR - a little (boring) personal history: I started out as a 17 year-old Pre-Med at Texas. Partied hard and long and my GPA got somewhere below Zero degrees Kelvin. Got booted off the varsity Track team and stumbled around as a pipeline welder for Brown & Root in Mississippi and drilling rig roughneck back out in West Texas. Shoveled mountains of shit for a couple of years, then went to  my boss at Schlumberger and they agreed to send me back to school as a Petroleum Engineer at UT/Austin. I won a Halliburton scholarship and I was even let back on the Track team. I switched over to Geology and got the highest GPA in the department.

I would work in the oilfield over the summers, for the pay, but that is a lot different when you know where you are going.

It took those first three years of awful and dangerous shit jobs to wake me up. Life is serious..

As for the truck driving thing; I had a CDL but let it lapse, as I was all teacher-y employed and all that.  Now I'm thinking I should have kept it current.

316  The driver jobs around here are one of three kinds: agriculture, short haul (mostly for small businesses), and distributorships...oh and the freaking schools, which decided they needed to hire out their bus drivers to companies (although I don't think they call for a CDL).

The ag jobs will probably stay, but right now things are very unsettled in that industry, and the short haulers are kinda in the same boat...the reasons are well so well known as to not warrant repeating them.

We need to take trucks off the road to save the planet. We will create green jobs using light rail to get our aragula to Whole Foods

First.  I am totally crazy.  Completely insane.  I have friends who are concerned that I live in my own head.  Guess what?  I do.

In principle, my math is very applicaple to computer science.  In practice, it's totally theory.  Totally.  I think about networks, so there are lots of applications, but I tend to ignore the applications because they get in the way of the theory.

What bothers me is when graduates of fancy law schools are called "smart".  They have really no idea what international competition is all about.

American public school grads cannot compete against the subsidized graduates from the rest of the world.

Chick, I would heave in half a second if I could.  I hate academia and academics, but (I admit it) I love math.  Math is perfection.  It's the distillation of human knowledge.   I think that if most of my colleagues couldn't do math, they'd be just as happy doing anthropology.  I'm basically qualified for 3 jobs: mathematician, CEO of a Fortune 500 company or Supreme Emperor of the Universe.

Chick, I would heave in half a second if I could.  I hate academia and academics, but (I admit it) I love math.  Math is perfection.  It's the distillation of human knowledge.   I think that if most of my colleagues couldn't do math, they'd be just as happy doing anthropology.  I'm basically qualified for 3 jobs: mathematician, CEO of a Fortune 500 company or Supreme Emperor of the Universe.

Modern liberalism is an interesting thing to behold. People are bathed in it and it becomes normal to them, and therefore it may seem like a crutch to someone not deep in it - but the mechanism is actually more rational. I believe that and while I believe he wasn't above some political deviousness, he is also a basically honest man. He may not speak in the platitudes that everyone is fawning over Obama for but at least when he was asked a direct question, you usually got a direct answer. People have been getting on Brett Baier for interrupting the president in the recent interview. It was only 15 minutes and if each nonanswer took 5 minutes there would have been only 3 questions. Obama likes long-winded answers without really saying anything.

It took us about 8 hours from central OH to DC on a big charter bus, and that was with about a 45 min stop at a McDonalds.

I also used to drive Audi's from NY to Seatlle. 

 I made it from NY to Seattle in the Winter of 1995 during the a Blizzard that covered the Country from Beaver, Pa. to Seattle.  One stop = Wyoming.  The Highway was closed for 6 Hours.  I made it in under 3 days, solo.

I have done 1000 Mi. days in MontAna just to get one more hunt in!

I'll join you on that part, at least. He tried to destroy not only Bush's presidency but the R Party just to get back for '00. I'm almost to the point that I think he threw the election on purpose. Am watching Crossroads on CMT with Jimmy Buffet and Zac Brown. Buffet just said Elvis was supposed to do Margaritaville but died before it happened and he was the one who recorded it. I never knew that. I may be Buffet's biggest hit, at least the most recognizable for those who are not parrotheads.

Yes.  She did look better before the makeover.  I hate most makeover movies, too.  Especially The Princess Diaries or whatever that crap with Anne Hathaway was.  The ugly friend should have been the princess, not the "pretty underneath" Anne.  Grr.

Talking about the Psyche finale, I liked it.  However, Jules should not have pulled the beer tap while standing in front of it.  I would have gone around to the other side of the bar and pushed it.  Also, not enough Gus.  And the end part was a little... too odd.  Was that picture of Sheedy and young Shawn?

As far as CMT being an affiliate of MTV, I don't care. GAC doesn't have Crossroads on it and my cable company doesn't carry it anyway. There are 2 CMT channels on my TV and one of them has music all the time. The other has a bunch of other programming in addition to the music but it also has Crossroads. I like the show and hope they do more.

MTV is the suck hole of popular culture. If I were a "savvy" producer I'd hook up RayJ with Gaga on primetime just to blow shit up.
