The Great 2013 Commenter Stats Tally
Last night some of the commenters were asking about how many commenters there are around here which reminded me that I had completely forgotten to calculate and post the 2013 overall commenter standings AKA the Hall of Shame. So here they are.

Update: Commenter Laurie David's Cervix puts it all in perspective.

Well there you have it. There's nothing to see here - it's just the government doing its job. Move along now citizen unless you'd like a random audit.
I recall reading in the Manchester books that Churchill had the final drafts of his speeches written out in a sort of blank verse form, and had not only the pauses written in but sometimes instructed himself to stutter slightly for emotional emphasis. A master of wit, word, and the delivery of both, he had a general rule about speech-writing and speech in general:Short words are best and the old words when short are best of all.You will note that most of Churchill's speeches - and virtually all of his most memorable quotes - feature short, "old" (Anglo-Saxon root) words. They also tend to have the cadence of the best poetry.
Were There Peaceniks and Blame-America-Firsters During WWII?
Apparently so and enough of them that Walter Winchell devoted a column on Feb 3, 1944 to calling them out.
Russia has never quite been part of the West (even when the elite wanted to be) nor part of the East either. Russia is just Russia. It's been that way since Peter the Great and likely will be the same in the the year 2214.
Before I first visited Russia, I took it for granted that Russians were grateful for the collapse of Communism. In fact, for most Russians this simply isn't the case. The vast majority of Russians living today are Soviet-born and Soviet-educated, and among them nostalgia for the Soviet Union and burning resentment at the loss of superpower status are powerful. Even young Russians, who may care nothing for Marxism-Leninism, envy their parents for having lived in a superpower that made the world tremble. The cult of the Great Patriotic War is recalcitrant. It's the greatest single obstacle to Russian democracy. In the eyes of many Russians, Stalin's cruelty was vindicated, or at least rendered irrelevant, by his leadership in the war, which gave collectivism and authoritarianism a saving veneer of heroism and nobility in the Russian psyche. "No matter how bad Stalin may have been," a student in Chelyabinsk told me, "we don't forget that it was under his leadership that we defeated the enemy, saving Europe's a** in the process, and probably America's, too." Russians take macabre, gruesome pride in their 20 million casualties in that war but are largely unaware that many of those deaths resulted from Stalin's stubbornness, incompetence, and merciless disregard for the lives of his own people, soldiers and civilians alike.
Pessimism about Putin's Russia has made people yearn all the more for the bad old days. Putin has been known to praise Stalin's leadership, but that's not the only way he has helped rehabilitate the infamous Georgian. "These are the worst days in Russia's history," a Nizhny Tagil woman in her 20s told me. "Things were better under Stalin. People had everything. The only thing was, if you spoke out, they killed you."
And for a classic look at Soviet Russia read PJ O'Rourke's account of traveling with American Leftys on a cruise in the Soviet Union, "Ship of Fools":
Also a Russian high school graduation:
Also Has the Russian Dyatlov Pass Incident Finally been Solved?
"Fifty-five years ago, nine young Russians died under suspicious circumstances during a winter hiking trip in the Ural mountains. Despite an exhaustive investigation and the recovery of the group's journals and photographs, the deaths remained unexplained, blamed on 'an unknown compelling force.' Now American film and television producer Donnie Eichar believes he has solved the mystery of the Dyatlov Pass Incident. Working in conjunction with scientists at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in Boulder, CO, Eichar developed a theory that the hikers died because they..."

Reviewing the Samsung UN85S9 85-Inch 4K Ultra HD 3D Smart LED TV

>By James O. Thach TOP 500 REVIEWER on November 25, 2013My wife and I bought this after selling our daughter Amanda into white slavery. We actually got a refurbished. It's missing the remote, but oh well-- for $10K off, I can afford a universal, right? The picture is amazing. I've never seen the world with such clarity.
Amanda, if you're reading this, hang in there, honey! We'll see you in a year.
*****
I just wanted to add an addendum to my review. Since posting it, we have received a flood of responses. People have said some pretty hurtful things--even questioning our values. Let me assure you, this was not an easy decision to make, and we made it as a family. Obviously, it's very personal. But in light of all the second-guessing, I wanted to explain our thinking.
First and foremost, screen size. I really think you can't go too big. 85" may seem huge, but you get used to it fast. Second, resolution. Is 4K overkill? Please, that's what they said about 1080P! More dots = better. Period. And as far as this being a $40,000 "dumb" TV, people need to re-read my initial post: WE BOUGHT IT REFURBISHED. It was only $30,000.
Some of you may think I'm avoiding the "elephant in the room"-the real reason why this was such a heart-wrenching choice. So let's just get it out there. Yes, the 120 Hz refresh rate is a disappointment, especially on a 4K. But life is full of compromises. And frankly, we hardly notice. All in all, no regrets.
P.S., as for our daughter, NO ONE has the right to question our parenting. Totally out of bounds. Amanda was going into 7th grade, so it was going to be a transitional year anyway. Now she gets to see the world. How many kids her age get to go to Bahrain? I sure as heck didn't, but you don't hear me screaming "child abuse." Bottom line: MYOB! Seriously.
Apparently back in the 60s it wasn't uncommon for pop stars to redo their hits in another language to appeal to international markets.

Good video.
In CO you can open carry. In fact, I had slacked on my CC renewal last year and had to go 2 months without a CC. Sheriff told me "just open carry."
LOL
You can have a handgun with a round in the chamber in your car (as long as it's not a long rifle.... it's the poaching game from the road thing) without any permit whatsoever.
And I've seen more and more people open carrying in public. And noted the response in public. It's surprisingly positive.
I don't open carry because I think it's inviting bad stuff and I prefer to look like that harmless guy if the shooting starts.

Dyatlov Pass incident theory is compelling, but it's speculation. The low frequency sound effect they think panicked the people hasn't been observed at that site.
Also, why did it panic everyone on site? Wouldn't a subsonic audio event affect different people differently? Eg feelings of dread, unsettled feelings, freezing in place and panic are all possible reactions.

Pro tip (and there will be endless argument about this)....do not overdo it. Guns need to be wiped of sweat (the salt is awful for the steel) and gunk, but stripping loosens the actions.

Okay I read a book about the incident awhile ago and the guy put forth the low frequency sound waves as a theory but he added to it. I can't remember what they're called now but he also theorized that a sort of recurrent low level tornadoes hit the mountain at the same time.
Sounds crazy but he talked to some scientists here in the US that looked at pictures of the terrain where the campers were and they said it was entirely possible. The author also said they may not all have panicked, just a couple of them and it had a domino effect that ended in tragedy. Pretty interesting book.

Have a couple wheel guns, a .38 spcl and a 44. spcl cannon. Now, my mom is 77 and I placed both on her kitchen table and asked her which one she wanted.
She picked the cannon.
Gotta love cowgirls.

May have to look into the froglube. Been using silicone spray on the shotguns and any other weapon exposed to inclement weather.
Anyone who's ever waterfowled in the shit weather you get knows how hard it is to keep the gun functional. So I use it because it is a "dry" lube and doesn't pick up mud and stuff.

Also, wouldn't such a thing be much more likely to affect lone individuals? A lone person could be driven to panic, but one would think a group would be able to reassure one another, that, "hey, there's weirdness going on, but we are all safe and warm in this tent, maybe it's just the wind acting up..."

Have you played any online games? The language can get pretty harsh. If someone says the language is pretty adult, then that means something because even the non-adult channels get pretty rough.
Maybe your friend is just re-thinking giving out the info and he is hesitant to let a kid on where there is probably some pretty extreme and vulgar language.
I get where you're coming from and if I was a kid I'd be crushed too. However, if it was my kid I wouldn't be letting him on an adult server to begin with. I know you want him to play with your friend but it just might not be a good idea in this case.
I'm 30 and I know how I talk. If I had a minecraft server I would strictly enforce a 18+ policy no exceptions. But that's just me.
I'll admit that I can't really tell you how to see it from a father's perspective because I don't have kids, but I'm hoping to show you my perspective as a 30 year old which might be similar to that of your friend.

I agree that Bill O is most likely a lib, but I disagree if you meant to say that so is Beck and Levin. Levin has his legal foundation that actually goes to court over conservative causes. So Levin talks the talk but also walks the walk unlike most of the other pundits.

The overwhelming majority of times when I have failed to let anger properly fester, I have ultimately regretted it.
Anger is there for a perfectly good reason.
I don't get angry lightly. But when I do get angry, I stay that way for a good long time, sometimes permanently. And it's better for EVERYONE, trust me, that it works like that.

I was hoping her 15 minutes was over but good God I would be ashamed knowing she was elected to federal office. Someone said in the Waxman retirement thread that his replacement would be worse and it looks like they might be right.

Kroil for general cleaning and barrel maint. SlideGlide grease for the pistolas, except for the Browning HP which really likes a synthetic bike grease, somethingsomething2000, makes it feel like the slide's running on ball bearings. Can't use the bike grease at all on my 1911, visibly slows down the slide and induces stoppages with mild loads.
As for Chinooks, one of the great thrills of my long past mil life was setting up some scrap trucks for slingloads to dump on an Alaska live fire range for targets. Then standing on the hood while the Chinook hovered overhead to slap the web ring into the sling hook.
Yeah, a Chinook hovering 20 inches above your head......fucking awesome.

They are in a business of making money. Making money for themselves, their station(s), their advertisers. (not saying that is a bad thing. Just a fact.)
They have a "schtick". Whatever it is, they try to stay in character because off air digressions can cost them viewers/listeners and/or advertisers.
Just because someone seems to be have a certain political bent does not necessarily mean that's their TRUE opinion or leanings.
And just because they help some foundation or group does not add veracity to their persona. Those groups are non-profits and thus receive donations that are not taxed.
Prove to me where they put their money (not some foundations money) and how they vote and who they truly support and I might give them the benefit of the doubt.
Having been around and watched some really good political chameleons, I'm very skeptical about infotainment people's true political leanings.
You and anyone else should also. It's also another way they make their money; by selling INFLUENCE and access.

It's a beauty--just read it.
Here:
Absent the media at all for a bit.
Civilian views on conflict and risk analysis are different than militarily trained individuals. Civilian perspectives on loss and conduct by extension are different than military ones. Military morality and conduct is codified and husbanded through top to bottom enforcement of discipline and standards.
As such, on a personal level Jake Tapper's logical observation on his view of the situation in play and overarching theme of the conflict is different than Lutrell's as it HAS to be. Anna Puma touched on part of the reason why, for the most part military members are not nihilistic and perceive their actions as being a token of effort through duty laid at their nation's feet. Jake Tapper angel or demon cannot comprehend that mindset.
Now returning for a moment to the media in the "civilians must be allowed to judge whether or not a war is senseless", I ask you to consider that since the civilians are the ones who send the military to war through their vote they have as a body already decided the utility of the conflict in question? The sitting President of the United States executed the response he felt the harshest attack on US life since Pearl Harbor merited. The public reelected him despite the media's engaging in an unpatriotic attack on his conduct of the war non-stop.
It is the CIVILIAN not the solider who renders the military sacrifice meaningless through undermining the carrying of a conflict through to its fruition. Civilians have a four year recurring edit button on their judgement of the conduct of warfare and strategic objectives. Bush was reelected and the GOP maintained the House until '06.
The media is silent on worse loss per day in Afghanistan than Bush suffered with numbers slowly approaching Bush's total loss of US life. The media is attempting to assert that the Republican party does not get to have foreign policy. They will use their power to undermine the will of a nation at war to see victory through for partisan gain.
The Republic cannot hold if this is not addressed. Once the die is cast civilians have a duty to see the conflict through not decide that because Chris Matthews looks like he soiled himself for 1200 days running the war is lost. We failed that and what enrages me at the public and the media is they are not as angry at Obama's failures as Bush's alleged ones.
The media does NOT get to have this power in an ethical nation.

No personal experience, but general intertubes scuttlebutt on the Norinco 1911s is that they're a pretty good value, simple but well made. Before he passed awhile back, Stephen A Camp had good things to say about the Norincos, to the point where it was his most common carry 1911.
Camp's site hipowersandhandguns.com is still up, lots of great info there, including some great ammo reviews.

If memory serves, she quoted a cost for a specific brand of birth control that this mystery friend of hers had to have for something other than preventing a pregnancy. I thinks he said she had PCOS and needed a certain brand to prevent or ease her symptoms.
That should have slapped down immediately...there were a thousand other colleges this "friend" could have gone to that would have covered her meds. But everyone latched onto incorrect info and didn't expose the lot of them as liars.
They were trying to argue that because it wasn't needed for birth control, they should be allowed to have it. That's a slippery argument to let them win.

The thing to do is explain the ages of those doing it, that it doesn't impress anyone except those too young to understand what they're saying and doing and that later in life, they will be judged harshly if those words have become a major part of their vocabulary.
In some milieus it is very common (in all senses of the word) and can become a habit. Especially in situations where unit cohesion mutual acceptance is a requirement for survival. It can be done and controlled but it takes discipline and the self monitoring that that requires if the need is seen.
There are a number of articles and essays on the topic, have them research for those and explain any confusing parts.
Tell them a very old guy with a lot of experience regrets the years that I let my mouth get away from me and that their were people that shunned me or thought me beneath them that I really needed on my side but failed because of my language. Even though I have a very large vocabulary and use it regularly, the curse words and obscenities were jarring and mostly unhelpful if not insulting for those listening to have to listen to it.
Swearing is like a really wet and smelly fart. Sure it's funny under certain circumstances but would they want to do that sometime serious? In front of someone they respected or wanted something from? What would they think of someone who did that around them?

AOP, you won't find Harbor Freight in Canada, but trust me, it is not a place where I would comfortably buy something as complex as a firearm. A hammer or some pliers, sure.
Anyway, I have a box full of low value scrap metal out in the garage that I periodically go upend at the local recycling station. About 20% of the typical contents of the box are various Chinese "stainless steel" items, marked as such, covered in massive rust. Keep that in mind when you read about "forged steel components and chrome-lined barrel".

There's an iconic photo of a Huey loading on a rooftop in Saigon which is often represented as being the very last flight out, from the roof of the U.S. Embassy.
If I'm remembering correctly, the photo in question was not actually *the* last flight, nor was it from the embassy roof. It was actually from a CIA annex nearby.

Oh, my God, it's a Harbor Freight gun.
A gun-savvy friend of mine had a Norinco 1911 in the late 90s and he was quite happy with it. The frame, slide and barrel were solid and after upgrading a few parts he had nice shooting 1911 for under $500. Unfortunately by the time word got out that they were a good value (especially for building up a custom 1911) the supply had already dried up.

I was adamant and more than a little indignant over the matter, as I'd spent those working hours doing a lot of mowing and trimming around some fairly sizable properties.
But, the mutual friend just looked at me and said, "You know, I can get it straightened out. But, you know, sometimes the least important thing is who was right."
I think about that every time I'm tempted to get into an argument with someone I care about.

Any SST casting that may have rust on the surface can be the right alloy. Due to the lack of doing the after process of Passivisation. Free Iron from the casting process remains on the surface. Or Lax processing of SST with Iron wire wheels and contaminate grinding wheels will produce rusted surfaces. But more likely it is crap Chinese alloys. Or Indian.

I think the Hat is on to something, this occurred to me when reading a sidebar item about Repukes negotiating with Dems in the Senate about amnesty. Here is the correct response:
You got your amnesty in 1986. Where is the border security that was promised? Where is the mandatory E-Verify system?
You will get nothing, period. No path to citizenship, no legal status to come out of the shadows. No more chain migration. You will build a fence, you will approve an increase in the size of the Border Patrol, and you will not de-prioritize the deportation of any illegal who comes to the attention of law enforcement.
Furthermore, English will become the official language of the United States.
Do all these things, give it a decade to prove they're working, and then and only then will we discuss amnesty for those still here, and by amnesty we mean "will not be prosecuted". Go to the end of the line like everyone else who followed the rules.

Harbor Freight (disclosure -- sister's husband used to write their ads) has some buried gems among their stuff -- their mini-mill is built in the same factory on the same line as Grizzly's -- it's just a different color. OTOH, quite a bit of their stuff is sufficient for a single use but loses its edge/breaks/rusts out before a second use.

to Win an extended war.... is for the Civilians to pull the trigger on
war.... but only allow the Military to decide when to declare that war
over...
Because otherwise... if the enemy is allowed to hold on...
eventually Democracies will tire of War.... and it will end... prior to
actual victory.

All out. As brutal as possible, because that makes it as short as it can be made. "It is a good thing that war is so terrible, lest we become too fond of it." Gen. R. E. Lee

I hope and pray, nightly, that this is not the end of our republic. As an man whose served his republic in uniform I can tell you that, without a doubt we do NOT want a civil war.
I am not smart enough to figure a way out of this while keeping the republic intact. But I guess that just means that wasn't why I was put on this earth.
killing each other is never the solution, but dammit, I do NOT know what the solution is. To some extent, as a warrior, you have to feel like you've failed when the only option is the option you hate.
This cannot happen. We have to grind it out on the ground by being good men and women. Every day. Not by pulling triggers.

I always thought a good bumper sticker would be:
"Bring the Troops Home (and put them on the border)"
That kind of thing works well on the progs because they're stupid. They see "Bring the Troops Home" and their onesie jammies start getting wet, but then they see the rest of the slogan and due to their inability to think, they just get confused and quiet.

I can tell you that it's nothing personal -- Pixy weirdness occurs in cycles. I've had this hash for a comparatively long time, even through router reboots and ISP and power outages....but I've also seen times when I had a different one every three days for a month -- on the same computer, with the same router, on the same ISP, and hadn't had to reset a clock for a power outage. I think it's when you get a runt hamster.

Toilet paper was hoarded even by the rich. And every day they lived in fear that someone with a grudge would say shit against them to the wrong person, and they would... Disappear.

Today, I took this little guy (Bear, the Australian Shepherd -- about 12 weeks old) outside to play in the snow for the first time. Up until now, I thought he just didn't like it because I'd put him out in it before, and he would hardly leave the porch -- and only then to run to another door to be let in.
Well, today I decided to go out with him, and he absolutely LOVED it. He jumped and rolled around and had just an all-around great time until I finally decided to take him back in.
Then, after toweling him off I wandered back to my bedroom where my computer is and left him in the living room while I checked email and Facebook. I'd wander back through the living room every so often to get a cup of coffee or check on my laundry, when I noticed one of my shoes by the pillow he likes to doze on. So, I picked it up, gathered my other shoe, put them on an old decorative footstool before going back to my routine.
When I went back through, both shoes were by his pillow, and I thought, "Did I just forget to pick them up after I got my coffee?" So, again, I picked them up and put them in the same place before going back to my routine again. And, again, the next time I went through, there they were -- right beside his little pillow, un-chewed and and right within close proximity of one another.
I know Aussie Shepherds are smart, but I try not to attribute too much to their antics. But, after the third time, I can't help feeling he was trying to get me to take him back outside again to play in the snow. He really did love it out there!
Anyway -- now, for the picture:

Some horses are just about dinosaur huge. Heavy horses, meant for pulling, are quite impressive. The ones they have at Disneyland pulling the streetcar are generally Belgians -- the staff won't let you get super-close or interact, but they're big. I hadn't known about them before seeing 'Cheval', a horse-themed show by one of the founders of Cirque du Soleil, but there is a Canadian breed of horse -- probably the largest I've ever gotten to touch. And then there is the Shire horse -- the world's largest breed -- that I saw in the distance pulling a group around the gardens of Hampton Court in England. It looked fake -- like some kid had combined toy playsets at different scale for the people/wagon and the horse.

I can still remember saying something like that to my mother when I was seven years old, and her becoming absolutely furious with me for back-talking when I really didn't intend the meaning she picked up from it. It was simultaneously embarrassing as hell, and I was just crushed that my mom would think I was trying to back-talk her at all.
I guess the one thing it did teach me was to be more careful in my word choice. But, still, I think I know what Little must have felt when Steve said that to him. It was mortifying for me, and I can still remember that ass-chewing almost like it was yesterday.

he was some kind of Dutch warmblood he had an old brand on his shoulder as i remember. Cost a LOT of money. was shipped in from Europe for some much richer person who got tired of him, then he was sissys horse. Some days she would go to ride him and he'd be all like LETS GO! and there were other days she said she would open the stall and hear him say OOGA BOOGA! and she would just clooooose it up again, and quietly ask to ride my horse.

@ 653 [gushka] -- He's a regular one. I didn't know there were minis until someone asked me that same question on Facebook today.
Bear has the sweetest disposition of any puppy I've ever had. Every time I see him in the morning and let him out of his crate, and when I get home after work, it's like I was gone for years.
I was afraid there was a separation anxiety thing going on at first, the way he carries on yelping and whining for a minute or so after I pick him up. But, he doesn't tear things up or howl after I crate him. He just curls up in his bed and watches as I close the door behind him.

I haven't thought about this in years but your post reminded me: at a county fair one time, before Mrs. Strangepork & I had become parents ourselves, we were walking through the horse barn, in the heavy horse section, and there was a great big Belgian. Even for a Belgian he was big. Anyway, perched up on top of his back, was a little baby, just laying there. OK, not a newborn, but a baby, not a toddler yet. At first I was horrified, and looked around for the Mama or Papa. Then, when I didn't see them, I saw how the horse was standing perfectly still, and the child was likewise perfectly still . . . not sleeping, awake, but perfectly content. The details of the scene have grown fainter over the years, but the little child on the tabletop back of this huge horse, with no one around but a couple of passers-by, I'll never forget it.

12 freaking servings?!?!?
Incidentally, I'd sub 1/2 cup red wine for the water and sugar, and "Italian Seasoning" is just equal parts basil, marjoram, oregano, rosemary, and thyme -- if you get them separately, you can vary the mix and do other things like French Onion soup (which only uses the thyme) [you'll note that they have an extra thing of basil, so they're assuming you keep separate basil anyway]. The other substitution is for the tomato sauce -- that's typically tomatoes, olive oil, garlic, oregano (another Italian Seasoning component), maybe some salt/pepper. If you begin instead, with the basic components instead of using blends, you have much more ability to vary the result.

Like 78.29% of all statistics, made up on the spot. But, yes, humility is involved. Getting crossways is not usually about violated innocence -- it's about two people misreading signals and behaving inappropriately. If you can shape the situation to one where you can both improve, you may both benefit.

i am a professional horsebreeder with no designs on your money. let me give you some free advice: There is no big money in arab fresian crosses. Foals cost money to make, in vet bills and fed to the mare. The big money is in purebreds and FHANA stallions need approval. Has this process of grading and approval been explained to you? Approved stallions make HUGE money. But show records and high scores at the Keurings are where its at. watch out, the horse world is wild and wooly out there. And get a purebred mare to breed him to. theres some older ones with good rating you might be able to get in this economy (and one of the big breeders has been forced into dispersal lately)

gotcha. You dont let her breed him in hand herself. its dangerous work and even a horse that loves you can hurt you by mistake. watched my best friend get the side of her face caved in training her stallion to cover a phantom, because he slipped and flailed. I hope you have a great experience with this and spend many years in the horse business, and have a great time cuddling baby horses.
i think theres no better life

oh no, I consider myself a gentleman farmer, I'll leave it to the hired hands who live and breathe horses to do the tricky stuff!
Mrs. Crank can take care of herself. The Arabian got spooked one day, thought the lead was a snake or something and went tearing around the pen. Well, she slipped and slid into the gate, taking it off the hinges and landing on top of her. Horse got up and charged Mrs. Crank (well, probably not at her, just in that direction and didn't care what was in the way). Mrs. Crank hopped the fence as the horse proceeded to easily jump two split-rail fences and just ran through and splintered a third, before going on a 10 mile chase through the woods, only to be found an hour later on the farm across the street, chewing on a corn cob as if nothing had happened. Once we can finish undoing 4 years of neglect she had before we got her and can get her broken, she'll be a thrill to ride.

I didn't get the same vibe from Miss Ellie that I got from the other one. I thought she was maybe "spooky" -- well beyond my taking her for a walk (and I got a little bit of that from Niece Horse, but I think it could be worked through). But I got the vibe from the black gelding that he'd lie to me to let my guards down when he wanted to hurt me all along.
On one of my rare visits to my cousin, I was introduced to one of his dogs who had been abused before adoption. Absolutely refused to be petted, growled at me, shied away....my cousin's family, the dawgs, and me sat down by the TV to chat and I got to the point in an hour or so where I could sit next to her, lightly rest my hand on her and scritch just a bit.....but nothing more. If I'd have tried to pet her, I'd have been bitten. I can do gentle and soothing. But I didn't trust that gelding.
