10 Things 'Idiocracy' Predicted Would Happen, and Sadly Already Have
Garbage Avalanches
In the film, it is the "Great Garbage Avalanche of 2505" that frees our protagonists from their cryogenic sleep. This prediction that trash will eventually pile up to unmanageable amounts has started to come true in many parts of the world. Particularly, Guatemala is known for their regular landfill landslides, especially during rainy seasons. Sadly, this is the cause of many deaths per year there to those who make their living as trash miners.
Ads EVERYWHERE
This one was a fairly obvious dig on society as it already was when the movie came out, but it's gotten way worse since. You virtually can't go anywhere without being bombarded by advertisements, and it's only going to continue to get worse and more prevalent as technology advances. Think about it, when was the last time you watched a YouTube video, surfed the Internet in general, or even watched television for more than five minutes without some product being pushed in your face? Heck, even phone apps are loaded with them if you aren't specifically paying them not to.
Plus you have the ubiquitous cursing and general talking like a tard.
But the absolute proof that we're now in the late pre-Idiocracy era is the fact that this aired on America's Got Talent:
Ow My Balls Society!
Why is Rick Perry Now Under Criminal Investigation?
Short answer: Politics. And opposing DWIs.
Can You Buy a License To Speed In California?
Yes. Yes you can via the 11-99 Foundation.
Alex Mayyasi reports that in the parking lots of Silicon Valley's venture capital firms, expensive cars gleam in the California sun and a closer look reveals that the cars share a mysterious detail: they nearly all have a custom license plate frame that reads, 'Member. 11-99 Foundation.' Are the Bay Area's wealthy all part of some sort of illuminati group that identifies each other by license plate instead of secret handshakes? The answer is the state highway patrol - the men and women that most people interact with only when getting ticketed for speeding. A number of the frames read 'CHP 11-99 Foundation,' which is the full name of a charitable organization that supports California Highway Patrol officers and their families in times of crisis. Donors receive one license plate as part of a $2,500 'Classic' level donation, or two as part of a bronze, silver, or gold level donation of $5,000, $10,000, or $25,000. Rumor has it, according to Mayyasi, that the license plate frames come with a lucrative return on investment. As one member of a Mercedes-Benz owners community wrote online back in 2002: 'I have the ultimate speeding ticket solution. I paid $1800 for a lifetime membership into the 11-99 foundation. My only goal was to get the infamous 'get out of jail' free license plate frame.'

'Repeated Requests for Phillips to Stop Masturbating and Ejaculating on Her'
Well I think for most people a single request is more than enough. When you're going on year three of making requests, well...
The less Americans know about Ukraine's location, the more they want the U.S. to intervene
And since we seem to be entering the age of quick territorial snatch-and-grabs from your neighbors, beware the Senkaku temptation:
If Chinese troops were to seize the Senkakus, might they also wrest the nearby Ryukyu Islands from Japan? It's not so far-fetched: Japanese strategists fret about how to forestall a doomsday scenario in the Ryukyus, the southwestern island chain that arcs from Japan's home islands southwest toward Taiwan.
Americans should worry as well. The southern tip of the Ryukyu Islands sits only about 80 miles east of the Senkakus. Unlike the uninhabited Senkakus, the Ryukyus host not only roughly 1.5 million Japanese residents, but also the U.S. Marine and Air Force bases that anchor the U.S. presence in the East China Sea. Occupying the Ryukyus would fracture the U.S. strategic position in East Asia - separating U.S. forces based in Japan (to the north) from those at Bahrain, the other permanent U.S. hub in Asia, far to the west. At a bare minimum, U.S. ships and aircraft would have to detour around Chinese-held islands, waters, and skies - incurring the additional time and costs longer voyages entail.
It's got the smell you crave.

I think it was The Other McCain that put up some of the numbers a while ago at his site. For him, he was getting 4% of any purchases made through his Amazon thingy. I don't know what the deal is with other kinds of ads, or if that 4% is a standard deal for Amazon, or if they have different deals based on volume.

Age 25. So, in the generation who were just out of high school in the bright dawning of the Glorious New Era Of Chairman Hopenchange.
"He died at 2am this morning. Weapon of choice? Heroin. His parents are devastated, he was their only child. They lost everything trying to help him."
Have had to deal with addicts. Only they, and perhaps God, can help them.
It really is necessary for them to realize that everyone else around them is reluctantly willing to step back and let them go all the way into the grave. Rushing to help every time just gives them a safety-net sensation.
It's horrible to watch parents in particular having to come to terms with that. But it's the honest truth.

The typical mechanism of heroin overdose hasn't changed in many decades.
It's because street drugs aren't labeled and are not of constant potency from batch to batch. Impossible to tell a dose from an overdose.
Now, though, synthetic opiates like Fentanyl are getting mixed in with heroin from time to time. I can't recall the exact proportion, but Fentanyl is several orders of magnitude more powerful, so a small error by the dealer will kill an entire crew of junkies.

There wasn't much of anything going on in the Northwest Territories that early on. Some fur traders of the Hudson's bay Company and the Northwest Company. David Thompson, the great explorer, didn't do his first survey, to Lake Athabaska, until 1792.

This brings to mind the movie I tried to watch last week: 'This Is The End' starring essentially everyone who owes their career to Judd Apatow. There were some funny subplot where the actors playing themselves suggested they had oddly twisted problems, like James Franco being obsessed with Seth Rogen and resenting any competition for his attention.
But most of the self-portrayers also chose to come off as if they suffered from Tourette's Syndrome. It got really tedious. Overall the movie was a failure (Heaven features Backstreet Boys reunions where grown men reveal themselves to secretly be twelve year old girls?) and the vocal idiocy of the cast was part of that failure.

I will NEVER forget the night I called a close friend and said, you gotta come with me to ex's place. We stomped in and found him on the bed with a needle in his arm. Blood sprays all over the place. I called his bro, who is super respectable and all. Two in-patient programs and about 30 grand later, I believe he is still clean. Still an epic fuckin' loser, though. I washed my hands of the whole thing after dialing his family in that night. It was disgusting.

You are probably thinking of Krokodil:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desomorphine
Desomorphine typically has large amounts of toxic substances due to it being "cooked" and used without any significant effort to remove the byproducts and leftovers from synthesis. Injecting such mixture can cause serious damage of the skin, blood vessels, bone, and muscles, sometimes requiring limb amputation in long-term users. Causes of this damage are from iodine and phosphorus (and other toxic substances) that are present after synthesis. The large volume of tissue damage/infection is what gained the drug its nickname of the flesh-eating drug. Gangrene, phlebitis, and HIV are also common amongst users of desomorphine. Sometimes, the user will miss the vein when injecting the desomorphine, creating abscess and causing death of the flesh surrounding the entry-point.

The Clinton Global Iniative.
All of the big money Dems donate to this thing, the Iniative pays Clinton a nice salary to host some of the meetings, and he in turn goes around the world shaking people down for donations.
And Chelsea just got a job there.

I don't believe that crock of a story about Mr. Rodham's Special Friends for a second. More imaginary Dem friends. It's on a par with how she suddenly revealed that she had been a diehard Yankee fan since childhood when she was running for the Senate. When she was running for the primary in PA, remember how old man Rodham suddenly became a duck hunter who used to take little Hill out to the blinds with him? That's the story she told when she was sitting around having a shot and a beer in some western PA gin mill.
She's every bit as transparently phoney as Barry. But the idiots buy it.

There is a specific time to have The Talk with addicts. The tough love talk. It has to be carefully calibrated.
The time is after they have scored whatever their fix is, and dosed up. But before they pass out or become incoherent. Sometimes that's only a few minutes.
If you catch them when they're jonesing hard for that fix, you can talk at them and they will nod, but they will not hear a word you say. After they get dosed, though, you might have a few minutes where the drug/alcohol hunger abates briefly, where your words might reach them.
Parents don't want to see their kid shooting up or what have you, and the kid doesn't want to be watched, but that's the price of admission to the talk.
And what you have to say in that talk is horribly tough stuff.
One mom I know had to sit in front of her grown child, after watching the poison get inhaled, and say, "I held you in my arms when you were a tiny baby and I swore I would always protect you, I told you I would give my life to save yours."
Deep breath. Long pause.
"But I can't protect you from this. Only you can do that. And I still would give up my life to save you from this, but this doesn't work that way either. It would be throwing my own life away for nothing. I still want you to live, my love is still strong, it will always be, but breaking this spell is your doing. If you can't break it I will see that you get a decent burial. And I will cry every day of every year of the rest of my own life, missing you."
That worked. At least for now. But for any parent to have to say those words... just freezes and shatters the heart in the chest.

WASHINGTON—Speaker John Boehner and other senior House Republicans are telling donors and industry groups that they aim to pass immigration legislation this year, despite the reluctance of many Republicans to tackle the divisive issue before the November elections.
Many lawmakers and activists have assumed the issue was off the table in an election year. But Mr. Boehner said at a Las Vegas fundraiser last month he was "hellbent on getting this done this year," according to two people in the room.

The Horde got to talking cars on a previous ONT and one of the questions was, what was the most significant automobile of the 1960s/1970s?
My reply was that you could spin that a bunch of ways.
But one way is, what car was most significant in terms of changing the way the auto industry does business? And the original Mustang was very significant in that sense.
Manufacturers now obsess about "platform engineering". Taking one basic vehicle and turning it into five or six or more different models, pitched sometimes at very different markets and income levels.
The Iacocca Mustang was a pathfinder for that approach. It's mechanically a Ford Falcon. Except with carefully chosen performance and styling improvements and a completely different image. And more marginal profit per sale than there was in a bland Falcon. A lot more.
It's been a while since I read Halberstam's book on the auto industry, but one of the takeaways from that is that the Mustang basically saved FoMoCo from irrelevance. Ford had spent the previous couple of years getting beat up by GM on all fronts, back when GM was *** GENERAL GODDAMN MOTORS *** and unstoppable.
The fount of cash from the Mustang paid for factory and product improvements all through the rest of Ford.
Iacocca is still a jerk, though.
Oh, and then he went to Chrysler in the '80s after Ford pushed him out, and he pulled the ultimate dick move, doing the same trick all over again, and putting the hurt on his former employers. Turned the lowly K-car into the hot-selling original minivan. Platform engineering, baby.

Russia's GNP is about $2.5 trillion. New Jersey's GDP is less than $500 billion.
And, to respond to a comment made by someone else, "unleashing" domestic US energy production to punish the Russians won't really work, because domestic producers have the same interest that Russia does, i.e. keeping the prices relatively stable and high.

Not at all. What I am pointing out is that producers in the U.S. will not bring additional production online if the net effect is to reduce prices and thus negatively affect their bottom line. They would rather have larger profits from current production than equal or lesser profits from greater production.
The most likely result of "unleashing" domestic production is that current producers would buy up the new leases and sit on them until they needed them at some point in the future. They are now too heavily invested in relatively high-cost extraction processes to switch gears now.

I'd create the Greater North American Energy alliance...
Mexico, US, Canada... with its OWN Energy Market... and Export and IMPORT restrictions...
The worldwide energy market is anything but free.... between OPEC and so many Nation State owned companies... its an economic weapon...
We need to get ourselves out of their line of fire...
Oh... and F Europe... they can defend themselves and take care of their own business for a change.

We do not need to form our own cartel. I am generally opposed to market restrictions - they rarely turn out according to plan. However, taking punitive measures against a foreign cartel would be legitimate. If domestic companies were colluding the way OPEC has been for decades, the US government would be prosecuting them. So, tariffs, lawsuits, targeting the assets of OPEC members - that's all good as long as they are conspiring to manipulate the oil market in the USA.
I can think of no good reason to put export restrictions on domestically produced petroleum products. If someone can make more money by drilling and refining oil in say Texas, and then shipping it to France, well then, that's what capitalism is about. Let the oil flow!
I agree with you 100% regarding Europe. If those Socialists don't want to stick up for themselves, why would we worry about it. Maybe if we were more willing to go our own way, they would be more interested in getting and keeping us on their side instead of sticking it to us every chance they get.

Heh, zombie. Was just talking to the daughter about this yesterday. She's been at her post college job for less than a year, and struggling a bit with the bills. But she has some self control; like she dropped cable cuz the money was too tight.
Anyhow, she is signed up for a work IRA with a small percent withheld. I emphasized how important that is; money you never see in your bank account is money you learn to live without, and the earlier you start the more it will amount to when you want to retire. (Assuming it all doesn't crash and burn.)
A trick I used was to take a percentage of any raise, say .5% of a 3% raise, and increase IRA withholding by that amount. Same principle -- money you never see is easier to learn to live without. Of course in the TFGEconomy raises are now a rare event. She says there are no raises in sight at her place of work; in fact they are in the hole for the year.
But it won't always be like that.

The only way they can do that is institute an "asset tax," i.e. just start taking the money you already have, rather than hyper-taxing income.
And the moment such a thing is anywhere on the horizon, is the moment I (and countless million other people) will start strategizing ways to keep assets out of their greedy hands. And trust me, there will always be ways. The most creative people on the planet are finance managers who scheme ways to protect big piles of money. They are always one or several steps ahead of the grabbers.
In a worst-case scenario, there's always the "Kruggerrands in the mattress" option. Posted by: zombie at April 18, 2014 03:42 AM (mizYg) Hide posts from (mizYg)
Alternatively, they can set up a "tax" on things they know you will need -- such as medical care or food -- that is somehow based on assets. Gee, isn't qualifying for EBT based on assets rather than income? I seem to recall Obamacare subsidies being based on "need", as well......

only that Us/Them is an interesting topic in all aspects and a lot of people have noticed it before.
There is a huge range to be considered -- at one extreme I'm sure some long dead idiot told his village they had nothing to fear from the advancing Mongols. On another extreme, the Us/Them gene leads people to do the exact thing your comment was foreshadowing. On yet another extreme, is that paranoia that creates scary monsters out of all the people one has not yet met in real life. And there are many more extremes built into this topic.
All in all, it is a lot of big questions with very small or even non-existent answers originating from me.
