10 Things 'Idiocracy' Predicted Would Happen, and Sadly Already Have

Garbage Avalanches

In the film, it is the "Great Garbage Avalanche of 2505" that frees our protagonists from their cryogenic sleep. This prediction that trash will eventually pile up to unmanageable amounts has started to come true in many parts of the world. Particularly, Guatemala is known for their regular landfill landslides, especially during rainy seasons. Sadly, this is the cause of many deaths per year there to those who make their living as trash miners.
Ads EVERYWHERE

This one was a fairly obvious dig on society as it already was when the movie came out, but it's gotten way worse since. You virtually can't go anywhere without being bombarded by advertisements, and it's only going to continue to get worse and more prevalent as technology advances. Think about it, when was the last time you watched a YouTube video, surfed the Internet in general, or even watched television for more than five minutes without some product being pushed in your face? Heck, even phone apps are loaded with them if you aren't specifically paying them not to.

Plus you have the ubiquitous cursing and general talking like a tard.

tarryltons

But the absolute proof that we're now in the late pre-Idiocracy era is the fact that this aired on America's Got Talent:

Ow My Balls Society!

Why is Rick Perry Now Under Criminal Investigation?

Short answer: Politics. And opposing DWIs.

Can You Buy a License To Speed In California?

Yes. Yes you can via the 11-99 Foundation.

Alex Mayyasi reports that in the parking lots of Silicon Valley's venture capital firms, expensive cars gleam in the California sun and a closer look reveals that the cars share a mysterious detail: they nearly all have a custom license plate frame that reads, 'Member. 11-99 Foundation.' Are the Bay Area's wealthy all part of some sort of illuminati group that identifies each other by license plate instead of secret handshakes? The answer is the state highway patrol - the men and women that most people interact with only when getting ticketed for speeding. A number of the frames read 'CHP 11-99 Foundation,' which is the full name of a charitable organization that supports California Highway Patrol officers and their families in times of crisis. Donors receive one license plate as part of a $2,500 'Classic' level donation, or two as part of a bronze, silver, or gold level donation of $5,000, $10,000, or $25,000. Rumor has it, according to Mayyasi, that the license plate frames come with a lucrative return on investment. As one member of a Mercedes-Benz owners community wrote online back in 2002: 'I have the ultimate speeding ticket solution. I paid $1800 for a lifetime membership into the 11-99 foundation. My only goal was to get the infamous 'get out of jail' free license plate frame.'

The less Americans know about Ukraine's location, the more they want the U.S. to intervene

And since we seem to be entering the age of quick territorial snatch-and-grabs from your neighbors, beware the Senkaku temptation:

If Chinese troops were to seize the Senkakus, might they also wrest the nearby Ryukyu Islands from Japan? It's not so far-fetched: Japanese strategists fret about how to forestall a doomsday scenario in the Ryukyus, the southwestern island chain that arcs from Japan's home islands southwest toward Taiwan.

Americans should worry as well. The southern tip of the Ryukyu Islands sits only about 80 miles east of the Senkakus. Unlike the uninhabited Senkakus, the Ryukyus host not only roughly 1.5 million Japanese residents, but also the U.S. Marine and Air Force bases that anchor the U.S. presence in the East China Sea. Occupying the Ryukyus would fracture the U.S. strategic position in East Asia - separating U.S. forces based in Japan (to the north) from those at Bahrain, the other permanent U.S. hub in Asia, far to the west. At a bare minimum, U.S. ships and aircraft would have to detour around Chinese-held islands, waters, and skies - incurring the additional time and costs longer voyages entail.

Posted by: Misanthropic Humanitarian at April 17, 2014 06:58 PM (HVff2)

42 I wonder if the generation of short attention spans, instant gratification and make no moral judgements can be turned around. I say this because late last night I received a call from my closest, dearest friend telling me he was leaving for New Mexico because his 25 year old nephew overdosed. He died at 2am this morning. Weapon of choice? Heroin. His parents are devastated, he was their only child. They lost everything trying to help him. He and his friends rented a hotel room and then proceeded with the drug use. His so called friends left him alone then came back to find him unresponsive. Dial 911 but medically he was gone. When did it become common behavior to stick a needle in your arm to get a thrill? Is life that boring? Why?

43 ugh, don't ask, I am sick of hearing myself complain.  burglars are targeting my neighborhood (and particularly my street) lately, so I'm driving around LA with a loaded gun every day so they won't get that if they hit me.  and my prescription medications because if I get home and find the place ransacked, the first thing I'm gonna want is an atavan.  wtf, people have worse problems, eh?

44 Bryan Singer, accused molester, threw gay pride parade parties with Roland Emmerlich. The parties featured boys, nude swimming, drugs and private "audition" rooms for Singer and Emmerlich to use From Emmerlichs wiki In 2007, on behalf of the LGBT community, he held a fundraiser at his Los Angeles home for Democratic Party presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.[35] There is a reason they have ne'er been charged. We must not ignore this story

47 Legal Insurrection recognizing the obvious -- Snowden was Russion Op. Snowden Self-Incriminates http://wapo.st/1j93fge Equally interesting is the Russian government’s implicit endorsement of the Snowden “mass surveillance” talking point. This television program is tightly scripted, and Snowden’s question must have been approved at the highest levels of the Russian government to get past the screeners. So this is clearly a message that the Russian government wants to promote. I’ve suspected for a while that Snowden’s objection to mass surveillance point was a phony. It doesn’t explain most of the stories Snowden has fathered or most of the documents that Snowden has compromised. Is it mass surveillance — is it even remotely a scandal — for NSA to monitor the communications of the Syrian military or to join with Norway in scrutinizing Russia’s activities in the Arctic or to modify a USB cable so it can extract the secrets of a single computer – to name just three programs that the Snowdenistas have disclosed? Now we can see not just that the “mass surveillance” justification is false but where the falsehood came from: it was almost certainly manufactured by the same Russian government that has now embraced it. .. To sum up, for the last several months, while living in Russia, Snowden has been putting forward a justification for his acts (a) that he knows is not true, since it doesn’t explain his actions, (b) that is approved at the highest levels by the Russian government and (c) that gravely harms the US and helps Russia in its confrontations with the US around the world.

86 Also remember that that Chi-Com representative at the Davos meeting back in February flat-out said that China was going to try to take the Senkaku islands in the future and that it would be no big deal. 90 From the write up of Emmerlichs fundraiser for Clinton Hillary Clinton recounts a story of her father, who grew up in Scranton, PA with, sad to say, typical rural prejudices, very common among proud WASPs at the time. After his stroke, she and Bill moved her parents to a condo in Arkansas to live more closely to take care of them. Her parents' next-door neighbors were two gay men (L. and D.), a couple, who, poignantly enough, met while serving in Vietnam. Hillary's parents became very fond of them, and the men looked over her parents and cared for them as if they were their own kin. One day, her father was watching TV with his wife and saw some footage of a gay couple. He exclaimed, "Why do these people have to do this? It's not right!" In effect he made it very clear that his prejudice was alive and kicking. His wife turned to him and innocently asked: "You mean, people like L. and D.?" He irritatingly responded: "What on earth do L. and D. have to do with this?" So she sweetly explained: "Well - let me tell you a little bit about L. and D. ..." [laughter from the audience] Hillary explains that her father was completely unaware, but his prejudice toward gay people now had faces, and they were faces of two men he had grown very fond of. After a massive second stroke he was hospitalized and her mother, L. and D. took turns being at his bedside. He later died in the hospital, holding one of these men's caring hands.

91 When did it become common behavior to stick a needle in your arm to get a thrill? Is life that boring? Why? Posted by: mpfs A friend of mine's youngest son (in his late twenties) OD'd on heroin about 4 years ago. He had drug problems in his teen age years, but hid Dad (my friend) thought he had gotten over them. Then in the winter of 2009-2010 he was in a car accident, and was given oxycodone as a pain killer for his injuries. It lit off his drug addiction again. There is supposed to be some real killer form (literally) of heroin loose, which is really toxic. Poor kids, really. Such a heartbreak.

108 China will never trigger WW3 by invading Ryuku. The ever expanding "demilitarized" Japanese navy (the 4th largest in the world) would annihilate the Chinese one without American help. A lot of people forget that China's current ascent is just making up for a catastrophic 20th century. The 20th century was "the American century" but it was a nightmare for China thanks to the Empress Dowager Cixi, Hirohito, and Mao. Had they stuck with Chang Kai Shek, China would resemble Taiwan's prosperity and probably be democratic. Another reason I son't worry is that China has fucked its demographics up worse than Russia or Japan with a little policy called "One Couple, One Child." They will grow older faster than the US within the next 30 years and their economic and military power will wane accordingly. You want to see the consequences? Imagine Japan's economic problems caused by its ageing population and low birth rates over the past 25 years and then multiply it by 300,000,000 abortions. They also have a brain drain of their most talented individuals who like living in countries where they aren't worried about eating adulterated meat or getting rabies from stray dogs.

113 I've been told by someone who should know, that addicts are very location-dependent on a particular dose of whatever it is they take. Meaning, they can handle a set amount at the place they usually shoot up. If they go to another location to do their thing, it's very easy to OD, because they can't handle the same amount they might take in their usual place. I don't understand how that all works, but there it is...

133 "my closest, dearest friend telling me he was leaving for New Mexico because his 25 year old nephew overdosed."

Age 25. So, in the generation who were just out of high school in the bright dawning of the Glorious New Era Of Chairman Hopenchange.

"He died at 2am this morning. Weapon of choice? Heroin. His parents are devastated, he was their only child. They lost everything trying to help him."

Have had to deal with addicts. Only they, and perhaps God, can help them.

It really is necessary for them to realize that everyone else around them is reluctantly willing to step back and let them go all the way into the grave. Rushing to help every time just gives them a safety-net sensation.

It's horrible to watch parents in particular having to come to terms with that. But it's the honest truth.

His so called friends left him alone then came back to find him unresponsive. Dial 911 but medically he was gone. When did it become common behavior to stick a needle in your arm to get a thrill? Is life that boring? Why? Posted by: mpfs at April 17, 2014 10:58 PM (8quwT) I wish I knew. My cousin killed herself "huffing" about 4 years ago. She was a beautiful woman, 2 great kids, but she just loved huffing. She and I were the same age, but went to different high schools growing up. She got into drugs in high school and progressed to that. Sad thing is that her brother, who I was tight with, was died driving drunk about 25 years earlier. Sadder? The surviving sibling's husband was killed by a drunk driver about 4 months later.

179 I know some people who got into heroin and managed to get off it so there is hope. Just seeing them rapidly deteriorate should be enough to scare anyone off drugs. Posted by: SpongeBobSaget I read somewhere that once a person becomes a heroin addict, their "average" lifespan afterwards is about 15 -20 years. Which statistically includes the people that quit and get clean.

182 "There is supposed to be some real killer form (literally) of heroin loose, which is really toxic."

The typical mechanism of heroin overdose hasn't changed in many decades.

It's because street drugs aren't labeled and are not of constant potency from batch to batch. Impossible to tell a dose from an overdose.

Now, though, synthetic opiates like Fentanyl are getting mixed in with heroin from time to time. I can't recall the exact proportion, but Fentanyl is several orders of magnitude more powerful, so a small error by the dealer will kill an entire crew of junkies.

There wasn't much of anything going on in the Northwest Territories that early on. Some fur traders of the Hudson's bay Company and the Northwest Company. David Thompson, the great explorer, didn't do his first survey, to Lake Athabaska, until 1792.

188 "Plus you have the ubiquitous cursing and general talking like a tard."

This brings to mind the movie I tried to watch last week: 'This Is The End' starring essentially everyone who owes their career to Judd Apatow. There were some funny subplot where the actors playing themselves suggested they had oddly twisted problems, like James Franco being obsessed with Seth Rogen and resenting any competition for his attention.

But most of the self-portrayers also chose to come off as if they suffered from Tourette's Syndrome. It got really tedious. Overall the movie was a failure (Heaven features Backstreet Boys reunions where grown men reveal themselves to secretly be twelve year old girls?) and the vocal idiocy of the cast was part of that failure.

They also see these islands as a matter of national pride. Put that with a shaky economic outlook and you get a volatile situation." You make a good point but I kind of see China as a continuum of bureaucratic rule dating back thousands of years. The current regime is Communist in name only but they closely resemble the corrupt, venal, anti-democratic ruling class of so many Chinese dynasties- essentially predictable dickheads without much ideology other than self-aggrandizement. There have been times when China has been the most powerful country on Earth (historically it's actually the norm over the past 4000 years) but they've always been fairly conservative within their sphere. In other words, they've never "gone Mongol." Their periods of decline tend to make them even more insular. Confucian and Daoist ideas tend to contribute to that.

210 I understand why people complain about ads but it makes me cringe a little (although i admit to using adblocker with the caveat of turning it off on sites i like), ads pay for a lot of the stuff we get for free here on these tubes and they're generally a pretty good way of doing business. They can be abused such as cable tv which rakes in horrendously high monthly fees while raking in even more with ads, and also lead to self censorship/boycotts and the like. But all in all they're a good way to get stuff you probably couldn't afford otherwise.

224 Epobirs - yeah, but I got a soft spot for failures in movies if the writers meant well. "This Is The End"'s main task (as I saw it) was to explain Christian apocalyptic to non-Christians, especially to Jews (like those who wrote the script). And it did all this with some faithfulness to the source material. Then there's "Wishmaster" - this was at its best when describing the Irano-Islamic views of the djinn. I couldn't find much wrong with that. The commentary of the DVD turned up that the writers had, in fact, spent a lot of time researching this stuff (which time they probably should have spent on editing the dialogue and getting a decent main actress, but what the hey).

You are probably thinking of Krokodil:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desomorphine
Desomorphine typically has large amounts of toxic substances due to it being "cooked" and used without any significant effort to remove the byproducts and leftovers from synthesis. Injecting such mixture can cause serious damage of the skin, blood vessels, bone, and muscles, sometimes requiring limb amputation in long-term users. Causes of this damage are from iodine and phosphorus (and other toxic substances) that are present after synthesis. The large volume of tissue damage/infection is what gained the drug its nickname of the flesh-eating drug. Gangrene, phlebitis, and HIV are also common amongst users of desomorphine. Sometimes, the user will miss the vein when injecting the desomorphine, creating abscess and causing death of the flesh surrounding the entry-point.

I don't believe that crock of a story about Mr. Rodham's Special Friends for a second. More imaginary Dem friends. It's on a par with how she suddenly revealed that she had been a diehard Yankee fan since childhood when she was running for the Senate. When she was running for the primary in PA, remember how old man Rodham suddenly became a duck hunter who used to take little Hill out to the blinds with him? That's the story she told when she was sitting around having a shot and a beer in some western PA gin mill.

287 "Torquewrench, my best friend is going thru this with her daughter. She is a fucking train wreck and mom just keeps trying to help her out."

There is a specific time to have The Talk with addicts. The tough love talk. It has to be carefully calibrated.

The time is after they have scored whatever their fix is, and dosed up. But before they pass out or become incoherent. Sometimes that's only a few minutes.

If you catch them when they're jonesing hard for that fix, you can talk at them and they will nod, but they will not hear a word you say. After they get dosed, though, you might have a few minutes where the drug/alcohol hunger abates briefly, where your words might reach them.

Parents don't want to see their kid shooting up or what have you, and the kid doesn't want to be watched, but that's the price of admission to the talk.

And what you have to say in that talk is horribly tough stuff.

One mom I know had to sit in front of her grown child, after watching the poison get inhaled, and say, "I held you in my arms when you were a tiny baby and I swore I would always protect you, I told you I would give my life to save yours."

Deep breath. Long pause.

"But I can't protect you from this. Only you can do that. And I still would give up my life to save you from this, but this doesn't work that way either. It would be throwing my own life away for nothing. I still want you to live, my love is still strong, it will always be, but breaking this spell is your doing. If you can't break it I will see that you get a decent burial. And I will cry every day of every year of the rest of my own life, missing you."

That worked. At least for now. But for any parent to have to say those words... just freezes and shatters the heart in the chest.

304 Speaking of China, I read an interesting article about reactions in China to the new Captain America movie. Apparently the Chinese public loves it because of the idea that a film company can make a film that dares to show its own government infiltrated by hostile agents. Apparently Chinese citizens have been joking that a "Captain China" would only be allowed to be a policeman because the government would never allow for the idea that there were serious criminals out there that merited a more powerful response. That would imply that those criminals had somehow escaped being re-educated by the government, which would make it look bad.

(presently ampersandless) at April 18, 2014 12:07 AM ...Yep as my Dad explained, it was all about getting the commercials in. the bands really took a risk in making a long song. They only got played when the song became so popular that they had to play it, and even then it was a shortened version. BTW I loved that song. One plus is that having your dad as the DJ, we would call him and ask him to play songs Good memories.

349 231 Ashley Judd's Puffy Scamper, aka MrCaniac@170. It's a Good Thing we're accelerating towards legalizing all manner of intoxicants. I'm almost all for Doing What One Wishes To Do To Oneself Because Liberty, but the consequences of these policies when it comes to drugs (mind altering substances, BTW) specifically reach beyond one's personal sphere. So, ultimately, I'm not the most Libertarian-adopting advocate. 'Course, if you live on a deserted island, knock yourself out. Posted by: AnonymousDrivel at April 17, 2014 11:43 PM (1CroS) I've got family that is all about the intoxicants, and from my dealings with them, they are going to get it/do it no matter what you do. Had a family member that would go on benders, and it was god awful. They would drink any alcohol they had, and they usually started stocking up for the bender a couple of weeks earlier. Drinking shit like creme de menthe straight nasty. We finally tried to get one into rehab, had them in the car driving them there. While talking to their physician, the doctor said that they couldn't stop cold at that point because of the DT's. At that point we had to stop at 7-11, buy a bottle of wine, pour that wine into a sippy cup, and hold it to their lips so they could drink it. But, I have come to the realization that there is nothing anyone can do to help those who do this, so why not let them? As a matter of fact, I don't mind that pot is sold in licensed stores and think the other stuff should be too. The reason? Quality control. At that point, the drug user would actually know what potency of drug they would be getting.

WASHINGTON—Speaker John Boehner and other senior House Republicans are telling donors and industry groups that they aim to pass immigration legislation this year, despite the reluctance of many Republicans to tackle the divisive issue before the November elections.

Many lawmakers and activists have assumed the issue was off the table in an election year. But Mr. Boehner said at a Las Vegas fundraiser last month he was "hellbent on getting this done this year," according to two people in the room.

377 "The one thing that did make me smile today. It is the 50th anniversary of the Ford Mustang. 50 years ago. Damn I'm old but I have my Mustang convertible"

The Horde got to talking cars on a previous ONT and one of the questions was, what was the most significant automobile of the 1960s/1970s?

My reply was that you could spin that a bunch of ways.

But one way is, what car was most significant in terms of changing the way the auto industry does business? And the original Mustang was very significant in that sense.

Manufacturers now obsess about "platform engineering". Taking one basic vehicle and turning it into five or six or more different models, pitched sometimes at very different markets and income levels.

The Iacocca Mustang was a pathfinder for that approach. It's mechanically a Ford Falcon. Except with carefully chosen performance and styling improvements and a completely different image. And more marginal profit per sale than there was in a bland Falcon. A lot more.

It's been a while since I read Halberstam's book on the auto industry, but one of the takeaways from that is that the Mustang basically saved FoMoCo from irrelevance. Ford had spent the previous couple of years getting beat up by GM on all fronts, back when GM was *** GENERAL GODDAMN MOTORS *** and unstoppable.

The fount of cash from the Mustang paid for factory and product improvements all through the rest of Ford.

Iacocca is still a jerk, though.

Oh, and then he went to Chrysler in the '80s after Ford pushed him out, and he pulled the ultimate dick move, doing the same trick all over again, and putting the hurt on his former employers. Turned the lowly K-car into the hot-selling original minivan. Platform engineering, baby.

415 Upon reflection (and sobering up), I find that I need to issue an apology for a most injudicious and wrongheaded comment from the previous (Mark Steyn) thread. I unwittingly painted an entire Generation as the root cause of our evils and that is, and the comment was, just plain wrong. As we all are, I am tired of being lorded over by corrupt, self-aggrandizing bastards. I am frustrated at a populace of fools, who refuse to understand that they are being led by the Free Shit Pied Piper, to utter calamity. I am exasperated beyond exhaustion at having to be allied with a political party that neither cares what I think, shares what I believe nor fights for anything, but scraps from Marxist tools. There is plenty of blame to go around to all of us, as we watched the country sink to this. The lie is truth and the game only has rules for one side. We didn't let it happen so much as we were utterly powerless to stop it. ....and it burns. Thus, I do heartily apologize for that bit of impertinence. Now, I must prepare for my flogging through the fleet. Good thing is, they are letting me bring a cooler of Labatts Blue along.

444 Good news regarding the Obama works projects from the stimulus bill of 2009. The local Federal building's renovation here in Roanoke was of the projects in the bill. $50 million for the renovations and "greening" of the building. Our local congresscritter said "whoa there, that sounds like it costs more for renovation instead of replacing". GSA said "FU", we are going to renovate. Now that the project is "finished", they found out more work needed to be done, $30 million more work. So instead of building a new building for about $40 million, we get an $80 million building that will be obsolescent in about 25 years.

Russia's GNP is about $2.5 trillion.  New Jersey's GDP is less than $500 billion.

And, to respond to a comment made by someone else, "unleashing" domestic US energy production to punish the Russians won't really work, because domestic producers have the same interest that Russia does, i.e. keeping the prices relatively stable and high.

Not at all.  What I am pointing out is that producers in the U.S. will not bring additional production online if the net effect is to reduce prices and thus negatively affect their bottom line.  They would rather have larger profits from current production than equal or lesser profits from greater production.

The most likely result of  "unleashing" domestic production is that current producers would buy up the new leases and sit on them until they needed them at some point in the future.  They are now too heavily invested in relatively high-cost extraction processes to switch gears now.

Posted by: CQD at April 17, 2014 09:59 PM (4iOIE)

498 "They would rather have larger profits from current production than equal or lesser profits from greater production." This is the reason that energy companies love the "environmental" movement. It gives them cover for charging more to produce less.

Posted by: People Corporation That bespeaks a serious personality disorder -- one, unfortunately. shared by a substantial proportion of the population. I am the exact opposite. I learned when I was till very very young, the secret of long-term financial stability: It's not how much you earn, but how little you spend. I too have had wildly varying income levels throughout the years (I am a serial entrepreneur, sometimes successful, sometimes not). But no matter how much I earn in any given time period, my rule is to ALWAYS spend less than I earn. Always. And if I earn a lot, I save a lot. If I earn nothing but 10¢ all year, then I will spend only a nickel and eat out of garbage cans to survive. Always save. Always. And you know what? It has paid off -- big time. In the long run. With every passing year, the residual income from past ventures and investments slowly increases, and I'm always "letting it ride" and still living efficiently, that it's gotten to the point where the income just self-multiplies and grows with no effort on my part. Yeah, the downside is I don't have $7,000 worth of Walmart junk in my closet. But actually, I consider that an upside. Lean years, fat years, just sock it away. We do not need to form our own cartel. I am generally opposed to market restrictions - they rarely turn out according to plan. However, taking punitive measures against a foreign cartel would be legitimate. If domestic companies were colluding the way OPEC has been for decades, the US government would be prosecuting them. So, tariffs, lawsuits, targeting the assets of OPEC members - that's all good as long as they are conspiring to manipulate the oil market in the USA.

I can think of no good reason to put export restrictions on domestically produced petroleum products. If someone can make more money by drilling and refining oil in say Texas, and then shipping it to France, well then, that's what capitalism is about. Let the oil flow!

I agree with you 100% regarding Europe. If those Socialists don't want to stick up for themselves, why would we worry about it. Maybe if we were more willing to go our own way, they would be more interested in getting and keeping us on their side instead of sticking it to us every chance they get.

Heh, zombie. Was just talking to the daughter about this yesterday. She's been at her post college job for less than a year, and struggling a bit with the bills. But she has some self control; like she dropped cable cuz the money was too tight.

Anyhow, she is signed up for a work IRA with a small percent withheld. I emphasized how important that is; money you never see in your bank account is money you learn to live without, and the earlier you start the more it will amount to when you want to retire. (Assuming it all doesn't crash and burn.)

A trick I used was to take a percentage of any raise, say .5% of a 3% raise, and increase IRA withholding by that amount. Same principle -- money you never see is easier to learn to live without. Of course in the TFGEconomy raises are now a rare event. She says there are no raises in sight at her place of work; in fact they are in the hole for the year.

But it won't always be like that.

And trust me, there will always be ways. The most creative people on the planet are finance managers who scheme ways to protect big piles of money. 523 #523 GnuBreed: I get depressed just thinking about what I used to call back in my more anarchist-leaning days as "wage slavery": only earning W-2 wage/salary income. Even during those times when I did have a "regular job," I always spiced things up with an endless stream of entrepreneurial side ventures, from the tiny to the huge. When the ventures flopped or fizzled, the job kept me going. But if the ventures occasionally caught fire -- I'd quit the job and pressed the advantage full force. I've struck success enough times that now the need for the wage-slave job is no longer there. Freelance and entrepreneurialism is now all I need. Of course, not everyone is cut out for such a "career" or lifestyle. Such people find security in just earning a salary and getting drunk on the weekends. Takes all kinds, I guess.

The Norwegians take it even one step further, sentencing wealthy people to intentionally humiliating hard labor as well, such as the drunk driver who not only had to pay a $85,000 fine but also chop wood for 30 days. The idea is catching on. Pundits in Wales want the same variable pricing scheme to be enacted in their country. And yes — inevitably — some writers have already suggested bringing similar laws to the U.S., making all fines and fees be not a fixed amount but rather a percentage of your annual income. …”

532 Ah, PJMedia is back online, so I can now copy and paste this sample quote from the essay: "The same argument can be applied to every single transaction, price, expense, fine or fee: A rich man can afford it more than a poor man. So, “to make things fair,” we should charge the rich man more. The price of a $3 hamburger is a burden on a poor family, but it’s nothing to a rich man; therefore he should pay $300 for the same hamburger, so he can feel a similar financial burden. Ten dollars to see a movie is outrageous for someone just trying to scrape by; but a wealthy family can shell out $40 for movie tickets AND buy popcorn for everyone, and still not even notice the expense. Thus, it is rational to charge a wealthy family $100 per person to see a movie. Underlying this whole drive toward “fairness” is what I consider a rather twisted worldview. The whole reason why anyone bothers to become rich in the first place is so that minor expenses don’t remain burdensome. If you’re broke and shivering and unable to pay your heating bill, your immediate response is usually, “I need to get a job!” But what if, having gotten that job and made more money, your heating bill is raised proportionally, to account for the fact that you can now “afford” to pay more. If this happens with every expense — and it already does happen to a certain degree with taxes — then what’s the point of making more money in the first place? You’ll always be at the same level of brokeness, since however much you earn, your expenditures will rise and fall in conjunction with your earnings. This, of course, is the recipe for individual inaction, which, multiplied a millionfold, becomes societywide inaction, which leads to the kind of cadaverous economies seen in communist countries. This is the complementary flipside of the overly generous Welfare State, in which the poor have little motivation to work because they can live just as comfortably on government benefits as they could if they earned a low-end salary. With progressive pricing, the wealthy also have no motivation to work or earn, since their expenses will rise in proportion to their wealth. Why work? It won’t gain you anything. ... But where does it all end? If it’s unfair that the rich can easily pay their speeding tickets, then it’s also unfair that they can easily pay for their health insurance, their Frappuccinos, their underpants and their bongo drums. Those damn millionaires! They can afford stuff! One can only hope that the United States Constitution is that last gate preventing us from careening down the slippery slope toward a “progressive” utopia of Marx-inspired economic class punishments."

538 301 @274 The White Satin Hat, how do you even know about a crazy version like that? it's an 80s thing, you had to be there

539 I thought it was law but apparently it is just a tradition now that puts dead presidents faces on U.S. Currency.

In that case I would have to go with St. Trayvon.

540 Scientist discover new planet 500 million light years away. Cooler but very much like earth. Very possible it could support life.

IRS immediately announces plans to open new office as does the BLM to protect the newly discovered Keplar 186F Land Dragon.

Harry Ried also announces plans to sell entire planet to the chicoms for solar power production.

541 I thought it was law but apparently it is just a tradition now that puts dead presidents faces on U.S. Currency. In that case I would have to go with St. Trayvon. Posted by: GMB (et al) Need I remind you of the Sacajawea Dollar? Susan B. Anthony Dollar? Who is on the $10,000 bill? Salmon P. Chase. $10 bill in your pocket right now? Alexander Hamilton. $100 bill? Benjamin Franklin. And what do Sacajawea, Anthony, Chase, Hamilton and Franklin all have in common? None were ever president of the United States. Really, the field is open to anyone. They don't even have to be born in the US (Hamilton, Mr. $10, was born on the island of Nevis in the Caribbean, for example). Personally, I'm leaning toward Angela Davis or Bella Abzug to get the nod for the $1 Trillion note.

542 I beg your pardon, it is only 500 light years away. Not 500 million.

Chicoms have already claimed the planet stating that ancient chinese soap salesmen visited there .

543 $10 bill in your pocket right now? Alexander Hamilton.

$100 bill? Benjamin Franklin.

None were ever president of the United States.

Nixon was the president who completely detached the dollar from any real-world asset, thus making the $T possible. So he should be declared rehabilitated and his face put on it.

546 Pray that NASA figures out that Alcubierre warpship design they're working on, in some fashion that we could actually power it, before the US completely collapses. If they do, and if there's even one ship going to the stars, humanity's future will never dim afterwards. No matter how iron a grip the tyrants establish over the Earth, people will leave to flee them to infinite worlds.

548 My only goal was to get the infamous 'get out of jail' free license plate frame. Hmmm...and what's to stop me from...appropriating yours? I mean, you're one of the 1% and I'm one of the 99%, so you don't mind so much if I swipe your plate frame?

549 FYI, Travis County Texas has a long history of unethical, highly political DAs. Ronnie Earle is the most infamous of those. I'm normally for local control, but for Travis Co. and D. C., I'll make exceptions.

550 Here's a sample of Ronnie Earle in action: http://www.nationalreview.com/article/359032/delays-vindication-texass-shame-editors I doubt the current Travis Co. DA is any better.

551 That License to Speed "story"?  Really?

Do you ever feel like you've been hoodwinked by a clever fund raiser?  Because if you believed that story and run out to buy your "get out of jail" license plate frame,  you have been.
