Overnight Thread - Cataclysm Edition (chad)
— Open Blogger

The downtown L.A. hobo hunting safari vacations continue for the regular posters so here I am stepping in again:

Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water, the mortgage crisis gets worse again:

In court testimony earlier this week former Countrywide execs testified that mortgages that originated with them were never properly transferred to other entities which purchased them:

As to the location of the note, Ms. DeMartini testified that to her knowledge, the original note never left the possession of Countrywide, and that the original note appears to have been transferred to CountrywideÂ’s foreclosure unit, as evidenced by internal FedEx tracking numbers. She also confirmed that the new allonge had not been attached or otherwise affixed to the note. She testified further that it was customary for Countrywide to maintain possession of the original note and related loan documents.

This is apparently a huge hairy deal. Without the paperwork being transferred in a timely fashion purchasers of the mortgages may not be able to foreclose, at least not without time consuming and costly litigation. In addition all those Mortgaged Backed Securities out there, they may be backed by nothing (well even more nothing that previously, I think we are starting to get into SQRT(-1) territory here) so look for a gazillion lawsuits as purchasers of those securities sue everyone and their brother trying to recoup their losses.

3 ...What, you guys still here? Lemme tell you a story. I remember this time we got a real goosing from some freakshow alien, literally grabbing my ship. Now, our own fifteen bevawatt tractor beam is fucking cool, but you know what's really cool? A super-bugfucking tractor beam that actually looks like a giant green hand crushing your ship within a single pubic hair of its life. On the other hand, I'm the only one around here that's supposed to be squeezing anyone's saucer, so after the comparative shock of reading a not very promising fortune on a giant green palm filling our viewscreen, I'm ready to go all Red Alert on someone's nutsack. But it gets weirder. Next some dude who looks like Mr. Grecian Formula "After" appears onscreen and starts into some line of nutwankery about how he's a god and we're his beloved "little children" and we have to get our asses down below or he'll crush my ship. I'm thinking "Great, little children? An alien pedophile with a god complex." I'll bet all Spock can say is 'fascinating' and Bones will refer the case to the ship's shrink, probably that Dr. Ding-Dong-Noel who won't let me forget about that xmas party nookie in the back of the shuttlecraft. Well, as usual I gotta go planetside and iron out this summer stock Napoleon so we can get back to the serious business of spaceflight and notching my bunk pylons. No way I'm doing this shit myself so I drag along the usual idiots, including Scotty plus this one new babe. I admit I was asleep through any classes on anthropology I might have stumbled into when I was a strapping cadet, but now I regret it because there's this smoking slinky blonde archeologist Carolyn Palma... Palmyr... Papa... let's just call her Digger Tits. Anyway, she not only sends most of my blood below my waistline but Scotty's too, because he's obviously making the moves on Digger. I plan to straighten out my personal Chief Grease Monkey of the Moors later; first things first: Plant boot in alien ass. We beam down to find a plaster picnic table and what looks like a bad scale model of the Parthenon. I guess the local Greek model railroad society ran out of columns and modeling putty. Lo and behold, out steps Mr. Steve Reeves back from the dead and wearing a dress. He's so buffed and oily, I can only thank God I didn't bring Sulu or he'd be climbing him like Sir Edmund Hillary on Everest. I don't know how any of us kept from howling with laughter but this steroid case in a toga shuts off our cell phones and the transporter and then inflates himself forty feet tall like a blow-up doll on a burst test, so I guess the joke's on us. Then Mr. Muscles starts trolling on Blondie and this makes Scotty a wee bit jealous, even more than when he's missed out on a free round of drinks. The alien in a toga totally smacks down Engineer She Won't Take Much More Of This, and check it out: He turns Blondie's uniform into this Fredrick's of Hollywood gown and her happy pillows look like they're ready to fall out of bed. While I'm wiping drool off my chin, I'm thinking this guy is a real puzzler. He's making the moves on Lt. Indiana Joyride but he can also whip up a fabulous dress like he's Halston's dream gay tailor. I can't tell which team he's on. Well, the two of them go off to compare hairstyles or something, and I figure the way to get out of this is to make Toga Muscles really pissed off, because that will make him tired and then we'll dish up some serious whoopass. I don't know. It sounded like a good idea at the time. Then Lt. Evening Gown shows up again, all weepy over this guy whom she now says really really is a god. So either she has gone all fag hag or she thinks we landed on Planet Harlequin Romance and Greasepaint Apollo is just the man to rip her bodice. Freaking women. Fickle bitchÂ… to cap it all she went from "Kiss me my lord" to comparing him to bacteria in the time it takes to watch fifteen minutes of a show on holovision. Now I decide Scotty can have her, if that's the kind of grief a guy gets for designing the dame a frock. For once Spock decides to use a little initiative and push the big fucking red button marked "PHASERS" so we can get the swinging Christ out of here. He gets the brainstorm to nuke the plastic Parthenon and he gets lucky, because I guess that's where Space Caligula keeps his batteries and force fields and dress-making machines. Once melted into slag, I figure we can jet off this rock for good, but noooo, Charles Atlas in a golden pinafore has to have a big swansong like he's doing the death scene from Don Giovanni. Hey, beam down a metric pantload of Kleenex and get over yourself already. Well, he evaporates, Scotty resumes Defcon Doe Eyes for Lt. Marilyn Makeover, we beam aboard and I mutter some crap about wearing laurel leaves. I think my hay fever must have been making me loopy.

This ain't MSNBC you overpaid button pusher. Sulu did the driving, Spock pinched anybody who looked at you funny, and when you couldn't tell which end of a Kelvan tart to put your dick into, Spock googled it and gave you all the data. Then when we couldn't overcome your ignorance of a Constitution Class starship's limits, I had to patch the holes with fabricated commissary trays and repair the Jeffries tube with duct tape.

This clown always wanted a major overhaul done in the middle of star system Shitholeus IV, and he sits in his Lay-Z Boy easy chair demanding I have the warp engines fixed at full power in 20 minutes. Are you fuckin' kidding me? It takes 20 minutes to call into Starfleet's warehouse to order the fucking parts before they run a check to tell me we've gone over our quota because Capt Dickswagger keeps beating the shit out of this bucket. On the chance I have the Warp Primary Manifold venting valves in the storage locker, Hot Pants doesn't have a clue that it takes longer to cold start these engines than a 1974 Plymouth Duster with a bad choke plate.

Well that’s true, but in earlier books it wasn’t so ding dang obvious whodunit so they were still good reads. Even with Eve whining nonstop about being fabulously wealthy. Now, it’s just kind of “blah blah blah” page after page of “blah blah blah” interrupted with a sex scene-but even those are “blah blah blah” now, I mean come on they’ve done it in pretty much every conceivable way at this point, there’s only so many times you can write “he gazed deeply into her eyes as they both went over the edge” before it gets cliché.

The "I hate being feminine" is my least favorite character in a book... and Eve too it to extremes, along with the constant resistance to having money.  For me, the biggest is her clinging to her past traumas  in a 'future' where it would be a relatively easy fix.  It got real old real fast.....  Fix it and move on.

181 Editor, I stayed home but my neighbor took his wife to dialysis and he said it was fine—of course he was a Metro bus driver. The boys went out too, they said it was fine as well. I think that was mostly a product of not that many people being out on the roads, not that the roads really were all that great. As is evidenced by the fact that the fire trucks couldn’t get up Somerset Hill to put that fire out.

Hartsfield TSA worker allegedly abducts, assaults woman

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

8:19 p.m. Tuesday, November 23, 2010

A TSA employee based at Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport tried to kill himself after allegedly abducting a woman, sexually assaulting her then giving her a suicide note to deliver.

MARTA police are among the law enforcement agencies investigating the claim that Randall Scott King, 49, kidnapped the woman from the Lakewood station Wednesday night. King accompanied her there from the airport where she left with him voluntarily, Hartsfield-Jackson spokeswoman Katena Carvajales told the AJC.

But King allegedly restrained the woman in the MARTA parking lot and took her to his house in Hogansville, about 50 miles south of Atlanta, where the sexual assault occurred, police there say.

"The victim stated that she was released by Mr. King who provided her with a suicide note and instructions on where to deliver it,"  Hogansville Police Department Sgt. Jeff Sheppard said in a press release.

A relative brought the woman, who was still bound in leopard print, novelty handcuffs, to the Union City Police Department, Det. Gloria Hodgson said.

Union City authorities notified the Hogansville Police Department, who dispatched officers to King's home. They found him with "several wounds about his body," Sheppard said. King was airlifted to Columbus Regional Medical Center where he remains in critical condition. Criminal warrants have been obtained by Hogansville police.

King, a behavior detection officer, has been with the Transportation Security Administration for nearly five years, spokesman Jon Allen told the AJC.

"We are cooperating fully with law enforcement during this ongoing investigation," Allen said.

It was kind of meh. But I like the fight Sarah was in. I want to be able to fight like that. (Yeah, I know it's all coordinated.) But I also like what she did to the guy in the bar and I definitely want to learn how to do that.

However, I really don't like how the episode ended...the sneak peek for next week looks awesome though! "Come with me if you want to live!"

And as for why 50% don't care?  Because they're stupid.  They don't realize that its a dose of radiation.  And they are uninformed that they are not actually making them anymore safe than they were previously.  I really liked the point someone on Rush made today, that if these naked scanners and gropings are in response to the panty bomber from last year why did it take a year for the gropes to happen, while waiting on the new Pervert 2000?

I have two girls (now 19 and 24) and two different personality types.  If yours is "strong-willed", you will probably know it from day one.  She will burst on every scene with a trail of smoke behind her and cats clawing up the wall to get out of her way.  She will drive you crazy with her tendencies to public nudity and her insistence in granting her every thought whether it is invited or not.  Type two will be all sweetness and light.  She will be compliant and agreeable and have tea parties and dress like a princess.  Watch this one carefully.  Chances are she is sneaky.  Behind that sweet smile is a plot.  Be afraid.  Be very afraid.

377 If the mortgage mess is slowed down to lawsuits, it might be helpful...or not. This information, however, proves to me that Wall Street is not full of brilliant people. Seriously overpaid attorneys and investment bankers couldn't come up with two little niggling doubts to nail down for MBS? 1) What actual mortgages make up this particular MBS? 2) Do we really own those mortgages, i.e. show me the paperwork. Seriously how hard is it to ask those two simple questions if you're making a million a year to do this stuff?

I was kind of disappointed in the episode.  I was kind of hoping for Chuck to get his Intersect back via Sarah being in danger after all of last week that dick claiming that she was the hinderance to him unlocking it.

I'm getting disappointed in Chuck.  They've taken away the Intersect and he's still a whiny loser.  Was hoping he'd get it back, but noooo... they don't want to wrap that up yet.  Isn't the whole point of the show the Intersect?

And Sarah did not apologize for being such a mean person to him about his spyness.

Was also disappointed that Chuck didn't wake up to a realization that Ellie's a bitch.  Really?  She wouldn't ask his advice about the laptop because it would suck him back into the spy world?

Oi.

385 It can be very exasperating working with humans with their drama and illogical emotional issues.

The biggest case of shark jumping illogic I ever experienced was when Starfleet decides we're done chasing stolen space vehicles and now we get to go rock collecting and doing Google Galaxy map surveys. I'm starting to believe some Federation hack wants to get Kirk away from his teenaged daughter. We're logging big hunks of rocks that pass for planets out in this wasteland and suddenly Abe Fuckin' Lincoln pops up on the view screen. I'm just about to chew out some dorky ensign for leaving his Ken Burns dvd in the computer when Honest Abe requests permission to come aboard.

I'm talking myself blue in the face telling Kirk that this isn't really Lincoln, Santa Claus, or Elvis, it's just some mind-fucking tricks like those Talosians pulled on my old boss Chris Pike. Well, Kirk loves to brag at Starfleet quarterly meetings on all the big shots and celebrities he knows, so we all have to get in our dress uniforms and play Hail to the Chief for whatever this is.

Honest Abe then says he came to invite us down to chat and meet his wife and kids or something, and for once McCoy and Scotty make some sense and tell him he's lost his fucking mind. I can't for the life of me figure out why I agreed to this suicide mission, McCoy must have forgotten to fuse the synapses that fed into "common sense" when he put my marbles back in the jar when we were on Planet Bimbo

We beam down, figuring we're going get an instant lava enema when we materialize on the one clearing they've made for this place. And just who or what has Abe brought us down here for? Some talking pile of steaming shit, that's what. Why did Lord Shithead invite us down here? He and the other Turds on Steroids want to know about the concept of good and evil ! Well Shit-for-Brains, go to church and get some Oakland Raiders season tickets, we've got more important things to do!

Shithead decides that me, Kirk, Elvis Lincoln and a mystery guest will play for the "Good" team in a battle royal. Whoopee. For the mystery guest they materialize the Vulcan equivalent of Jesus named Surak, who is the Gandhi of Vulcan, but he looks too much like Ashton Kutcher to scare anybody in a cage match.

The "Evil" team is consisted of Col Green, who looks like Gov. George Wallace, Jenjis Khan, Kahless the Founding Asshole of the Klingons, and some butt ugly bitch named Zora who should have asked Shithead to materialize a razor and deodorant for her.

First problem we have is that Ashton the Vulcan doesn't want to get his hands dirty and thinks he can sweet talk pure evil with big words. For once Kirk's macho bullshit makes sense and we go about making spears since Shithead's planet had strict phaser control laws. Ashton of Vulcan goes to engage the bad boys in dialog and gets a spear between the shoulder blades for his trouble. Damn, why couldn't they create an ancient Vulcan who would have ripped their heads off and shit down their necks? Meanwhile we have to listen to Elvis Lincoln bore the shit out of us with his damn memoirs, and he decides to go find Ashton the Vulcan and bring him back. That lasted about as long as the Ali-Liston fight, and now it's just me and Kirk's Flying Leg Kick against four homicidal goons.

Kirk goes to The Supreme Shithead to tell him we're not going to play any more bullshit games and what the fuck are they going to do about it.  They reply that if we don't fight, they'll beam up and clog every fecal disintegrator up so badly that we'll be swatting flies for the rest of our lives. Having no other choice, we figured we'd die fighting and we make a last whooping charge at the Goon Squad. Thankfully the Kirk luck appeared once again because the goons were total pussies who couldn't win a fight with elderly interior decorators and they shit and ran.

Shithead tells us that he still couldn't tell the difference between good and evil other than evil was a pussy when faced with force. No shit Sherlock.

I'm really pissed that we had to waste our time with this little sideshow just because of Kirk's celebrity worshipping. I really have to ask dad if the Vulcan Science Academy is still hiring, I've had it with this shit. Literally

Okie dokie...feel free to resume your off topic discussion.  ;o)

Posted by: kakypat at November 24, 2010 03:19 AM (b8jZZ)

Derivatives are financial instruments (contracts) that have value derived from some other sort of financial instrument. For example, a contract to pay the amount by which the value of 5000 shares of a certain stock exceeds $100,000 next Thursday.

CDSs, or credit default swaps, attempt to turn iffy investments into sure things by insuring that they won't go bad. So you buy a $5000 note from Joe Schmoe, but you note that his only assets are his car and a packet of blow -- and you go to a bank that knows Joe better and say, "I'll pay you $10/month until Joe's note comes due, and if he's in jail on that day, you pay me the $5K instead of him."

Both of these can be legitimate ways of managing business. They can be something like insurance.

In insurance, however, you must have what is known as an "insurable interest" -- you can insure your house against fire because you'll be hurt if your house burns down.....but you can't just insure some random structure against fire (for one thing, gasoline and matches are too easy to acquire).

In high finance, however, they broke the link between the insurance policies and the assets being insured -- to the point that a half-dozen people might collect the $5K if Joe skips town. Nobody thought that he would, so all sorts of people were willing to take the $10/month. And those people who knew Joe thought, "suckas", and were willing to bet he'd be busted or dead when the note came due.

This dovetails nicely into the vortex of bad real estate practices. Mortgages R Us writes 2 NINJA (No Income, No Job or Assets) loans to a couple of crackheads in Modesto, Jeb and Charlie. Bank of Whassup funds the loans and immediately rolls them into Modest Investment trusts A, B, C, D, and E. Trust A is 50% Jeb and 10% Charlie, trust B is 40% Jeb and 20% Charlie, trust C is 30% Jeb and 30% Charlie, trust D is 20% Jeb and 40% Charlie, and trust E is 10% Jeb and 50% Charlie. For those keeping track, they have now committed 150% of Jeb and 150% of Charlie to the trusts, so they obviously can't physically deliver the paper.

Bank of Whassup then sells each of these trusts off to some pension fund or other bank. Since people generally want to see something nice in their hands before letting go of their money, they attach a CDS from some plausible sucker to make all the paper look good. Since they just funded 100% of the loans and sold 150% of the loans, they've got a tidy profit to bonus out to their top executives.

Posted by: cthulhu at November 24, 2010 12:06 AM (kaalw)

425 The great unwind occurs when it is noted that Jeb and Charlie are crackheads, and home prices in Modesto are plummeting. All of a sudden everyone wants out of the burning theater through the same small doors. Since Mortgages R Us and Bank of Whassup ensured that their protection money was paid up current to various corrupt politicians, it is unthinkable to just let things go......those pension funds and investors might string some bank executives up instead of letting them spend those cosy bonuses.

So they decide to let Bernanke print the money to buy up all the bad paper -- all five trusts' worth. Since the Federal Reserve banks were all in on the original swindle, it's not like they're going to get religion and start going, "how did we end up with 150% of Jeb's house?" They can just bury it inside the Federal Reserve's opaque books and wait for someone to refi it or for house prices to go back up or something.

This is, BTW, why you hear about "audit the Fed" like it's a BFD.....'cause if someone did a proper audit, it might be noticed that none of the trusts had the proper mortgages inside in the first place, and that the sum of them added up to more than the mortgages were worth in the second.

432 For instance, I casually note that Bank of Whassup attaches CDSs to the trusts.....but don't go on to say that they can get these CDSs because the people providing them don't insist on there being an insurable interest......thus, you can insure 150% of Jeb and Charlie's mortgages.

I did have this "thing" once with an Asian chick - she was a total nutcase though.  had some serious family issues and some serious spoiled brat issues too.  man I'm glad that one didn't work out.

Hospital IT. yes not many left we were using the new line IBM Z9 which is modular in design just add more drives and turn on more processors as you need them. We had our own inhouse medical program (Hissprod)  which ended use this summer, now it EHR which is mostly vendor supported and has been down more then hissprod in it's entirety.

449 beanervt sorry to hear about your divorce, sorry to hear about your technology issues
yeah proprietary software stuff sucks, it seems like the companies put so much effort into pushing their stuff but then they forget that if they are successful, they have to do all this customer support

when I was in grad school, I had to deal with vendor-specific proprietary software to run lasers, optical detectors, etc.  it truly and utterly sucked.  after a while I ended up writing my own program to interface it all.  it was easier than having to deal with tech support.

Wowzer, gives new meaning to if you want it done right do it yourself.. Good job. Yes besides not having control of your program you still get the wrath when the shit hits the fan.. and can't do anything about it.

Population in the 60's was around 250k mostly sane common sense and value of money had meaning. Most politics were fiscal conservative with moderate
social. Now the pop has bloated to 450k of which most were die in the wool libtards hence no more common sense or financial responsibly and now a total way beyond left of center political machine control...

LOL, yeah, the day-shift crowd is rolling in now so the graveyard shift can leave.

And its Wed morning as well! The significance of that is that back in my younger days working rotating shift work after 7 days of graveyard shift when we got off on Wed morning we had off until 2nd shift on Monday (15:30). Everyone on shift would pile over to my house on Wed morning and we would drink beer and watch porno movies.

Wifey would get home from work and find a bunch of drunks passed out in the chairs, couch, and floor.

478 I've had similar experiences with cheating (not with test banks, but with other issues).  He's basically bluffing - catching cheaters via statistical analysis like he said is pretty hard, and very unlikely to hold up under challenges.   As a result, given how risk averse college administrators are, it's unlikely that the university would go forth with actions like that.

So, he's trying to bluff the students.   If the cheating was as widespread as it seemed, there's likely going to be one or two students who cave.  At least he get to cause the pucker factor to go up among the cheaters, and some will likely cave.

I usually don't use testbanks, and in cases where I do, it's only for a small part of the exam - I prefer to write my own questions (usually one or two after each class, so that they are targeted more towards the discussions that took place in class).

But damn, cheaters piss me off.  Kinda like liberals.

Thats the crux of the problem for small dairies, can't produce enough as most goes for cheese and factory farms rule that game. If we kept all milk local and processed it local we spend enough to keep them in business.

Posted by: beanervt at November 24, 2010 02:37 AM (gH/SX)

480 If we kept all milk local and processed it local we spend enough to keep them in business.

The other thing needed is to get the damn FDA out of the milk business. I would dearly love to have some fresh whole milk once in a while but that has become next to impossible.

Posted by: Vic at November 24, 2010 02:46 AM (e4sSD)

481 love to have some fresh whole milk once in a while but that has become next to impossible.

The state gave approval for small farms but they can only sell limited amount.
It's just high priced whole milk, couple local farms are selling it. I use to work farms in the summer haying and there was nothing like dipping into the cold bulk tank and drinking until your brain froze, might be my problem come to think of it..

I have another financial question.

Where the hell are the derivatives...CDSs?    Aren't they still out there?

Yep. They're actually not a bad risk management tool if used properly.   However, a lot of CDS were written on bad paper by people who had serious recto-cranial inversions.   They've got a lot of leverage inherent in them, so relatively small movements in price of the underlying asset can make for bog movements in the value of the CDS.   So the folks who wrote them "Naked" (i.e. without a position in the underlying asset) got pretty thoroughly hosed in the recent meltdown.

But like many things, they're useful in the right hands/settings but not in the wrong ones (kinda like hobos in for AOS members).
