1. No pat downs, darn it!
2. Not selected for body scan at Salt Lake airport - was asked if I would set off metal detector, replied no, so they put me through that
3. Saw one older person being patted down at Salt Lake
4. Noticed an unarmed TSA agent (short, slight guy probably in his 50s) "patrolling" the seating/waiting area in Salt Lake -- very odd
5. I didn't see any body scanners at Ontario (in Los Angeles area) - just metal detector. Again no pat down.
6. While waiting for hubby, I watched two old folks being patted down in Ontario. The older lady had her skirt lifted up in full view of everyone. Lovely. The older man, whom I would describe as frail/elderly, had the full monty, including examination of the (elasticized) waist band of his baggy old man pants.
7. No additional security at Ontario
BTW, I think that the TSA is astroturfing blog sites. I've read a lot of comments in threads about how annoying/outrageous what they're doing now in which the commenter waxes poetic about how professional the TSA screeners are and how most of them are so darned professional because they are (supposedly) ex-military or retired police. I call bullshit. I have yet to see a TSA person who looks like they were ever in the military, even 20 years and 40 pounds ago.
But that raises an interesting thought. I wouldn't mind this crap nearly as much if it were being conducted by current members of the military. I guess it's a confidence thing.

It covers the end of Victoria's reign, the birth of modern liberalism, and the period up until Guns of August, just about minute by minute. Also great stuff on American Victorianism, and the career of TB Reed, without whom we wouldn't care who was Speaker of the House. Adn, she is some people's idea of a conservative, too, just ot add a chewy center.
Sorry this isn't in a book thread, but I'm trying to help with homework you see.

Reducing the padding that players wear would be the best option. Make lighter hits hurt more, and players will start being careful.
Posted by: Alex at November 21, 2010 10:32 PM (yY28H)
look at the pads players were wearing in the 80's and 90's. Compare them to today. The padding is reduced. You used to not be able to tell if a player had a neck when they were wearing shoulder pads.

No matter how much danger we were in, the lives of the crew and the ship itself were secondary to the Captain's Log. There was even one time we had to go hunting all over the galaxy to find him because he'd taken a shot to the head and went all Dances With Wolves on us. Took long enough too because he had time to knock up some Algonquin Princess and had himself proclaimed a god too. Hell, they were just joking in Starfleet that the difference between God and Kirk was that God didn't think he was Jim Kirk
The inhabitants of Earth should be glad that Capt Libido didn't have a hot date right as the roll of giant quarters was turning the whole planet into Seattle. No matter what, Jim Kirk getting laid is the Prime Directive.
I need to get laid once every 7 years or my balls will bust. Does Kirk divert some bullshit ceremony so the Federation diplomats can have a photo op? Oh no, for once the prick decides to go by the book and actually follow orders to the letter. The clueless fuck actually sends in Man Hands Chapel with a bowl of fucking soup in the hope I'd actually hit that tranny.
We get to Vulcan, and the Grand Exalted Old Bag of Vulcan is there to officiate my wedding. The little bitch my parents fixed me up with from birth decides she actually wants me to fight for her. What the hell is it with these arranged marriages on Vulcan anyway, are we Armenians or something? She gets to pick the guy who will take the business end of the giant can opener I'll use to bisect anybody who gets in the way of me getting laid. Instead of the uberdork she'd made a deal with before, she picks Capt Cocksman. Queen Helen Thomas tells Kirk that the little tart was probably just kidding and he didn't have to face me and my raging hormones. Kirk decides what the hell, she's pretty hot and if he's got to risk being sliced open, a lay is a lay is a lay.
I can whip Kirk with one hand tied behind my back even in normal climes, not to mention fighting in heat like Phoenix Arizona and air thinner than Denver. McCoy figures this out and gives Kirk an overdose of Cialis so his hardon will take the blood out of his head long enough to simulate death. For some reason this takes the edge off my blue balls, I guess nobody can hold a hardon when you're facing life busting dilithium rocks on some prison asteriod.

Yes. I was just commenting that she's the last Hanoverian, her son Edward is counted as being Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, and George V renamed S-C and G "Windsor".
Found this: When HG Wells wrote about Britain's "alien and uninspiring court", George famously replied: "I may be uninspiring, but I'll be damned if I'm alien."

While Vlad gets nailed for being an impaling asshole (err pardon the poking pun - heh), there is a lot of debate as to whether he was a "bad" guy or not. He did indeed enjoy a good impaling or two (because I mean, who doesn't, really?) but there is some evidence that he wasn't an indiscriminate murderer - that his actions were not really out of the ordinary for the times - that his subjects (those he was supposedly torturing) loved him. Hell, if you mention his name in Romania today, he's revered as a hero.
Posted by: Arne Fucking Duncan at November 21, 2010 11:01 PM (uCjoj)
Don't forget he made the Turks shit their pants. The image of him as the vampire has probably tarnished him some and made the rest of the world view him as a bloodthirsty murderer. I think its much more likely that he was a ruler for his time and place and certainly worthy of respect given to other "good" rulers of his time period.

Whole thing kind of reminds me of this fucked-over situation Jim and Spock dragged me down to on Pyris VII. It was this weird Halloween scene dreamed up by a couple of three-inch high aliens made out pipe cleaners and Nerf balls. Yeah I know, that doesn't SOUND too threatening, but just ask Crewman Jackson how cute the little bastards were. Oh that's right, you CAN'T ask Crewman Jackson about it, because the moment we beamed him back on board he tumbled off the transporter pad face first in a fall hard enough to liquefy neutronium. Yep, fucker was dead, but that didn't keep him from talking to us afterward. Walking dead indeed, baby.
Anyway, next thing I know I'm down there on the planet surface, and I don't know what I'm doing there. I'm a DOCTOR, dammit, I don't deal with witches and giant cats and pipe-cleaner aliens and zombified crew members. What the fuck was I supposed to do when Scotty and Sulu stumbled along with stares blanker than my ex-wife's when I told her I was signing on to the Flying Dutchman for five years just to get away from her nagging bitch ass? NOTHING, that's what. Anything that kept that hairless fucking twink Sulu from running around bare-chested couldn't be all bad anyway, and it was kind of nice not having to hear Scotty open up his braying mouth like when he calls up to the bridge every half-hour or so to warn us that the engines are headed straight to Shitville at Warp Factor Fuckall if Jim doesn't ease up on whatever Christ-humping joyride he happens to be taking them on. I don't remember a whole lot after that and I was told by Jim later that the pipe-cleaner fucknozzles turned ME into a zombie for a while, which is no skin off my ass because at least I had an excuse for stumbling around like some limp-dicked Goddamned machine. Let Jim eat this shit sandwich; it wasn't going on MY record.
I don't know, maybe this show isn't so great after all. It's starting to depress me. I was looking forward to getting back to Georgia after having my atoms scattered to hell and gone for five years, now I've got to wonder if there's going to be nothing there but rotting corpses when I get back. Ah, fuck it, even if it is, it can't be worse than space. Fuck space.

So, when the wife (gf at the time, of course) went to use the restroom, I had to do some sweet talking in the pro shop. They escorted us to hole 12 to start the round. I honestly do not get most of the pre-rituals associated with events. Baby showers, ok... so people can give gifts ahead of time in order to stock up on clothes to free up money for the essentials. I kind of get that. But wedding stuff? Eh. It's some sort of bonding ritual between the bride and her friends? I think?
I'm not even very keen on the idea of a reception. If you don't hold one, then no one can complain later about it.

let me put it this way, every girl I've known that did something similar has been uber high-maintenance and been the 'it's all about me!!!1!1!' type of bride. so that's the pov I'm coming from on this. you know the, it's my day! type of girl [and they never want just 'the day'. they want the year leading up to the day].
you and your wife, at least from how you've described her, hardly fit that bill.

When my mom turned 50, the other kids wanted a surprise party. I hate that kind of thing, so I said to them - you figure out how to get her there, I'll pay but don't involve me.
So after going out for dinner, my sister says she left something at the hotel and we go there. Everyone gets out of the car but my mom, who sensibly was going to sit and wait.
I had to literally drag my mom into the hotel ballroom and push her in the door. She later said she was surprised - she just figured I had gone insane.

Honestly? I like receptions as long as there's dancing. Went to one where just the bride and groom danced, then they danced with their parents. After that, everyone went home. I flew 3000 miles just to sit and watch them dance. (The rest of it was nice and enjoyable, though).
I do like the new(ish) tradition of the family having breakfast the morning after. Maybe it's because I love breakfast foods, but it's so nice to be a part of that when it occurs.
Worst reception? We sat around for about an hour after the ceremony waiting for the bridal party to come in from getting their pictures taken. It was a buffet and our table was the last called up to the line. We were HUNGRY like dehibernated bears. It was also a Sunday night. It took forever to get to the dancing part, at which time, we all had to go home because we had work in the morning. So, no dancing there either.

My eldest cousin had a morning wedding and luncheon for her reception. No open bar, no dancing. And the family table, the 18th table, was the very last one to get called up to the buffet. That also sucked.

Unfortunately, I know lots of people who do that, and they use both their blog, Facebook, and the blog's feed to FB. Then there are also the engaged couples who have to post "I can't believe I have to wait 2 days until I see you again" every hr on their Facebook. Really, people? I understand the waiting bit, but do you have to post it on FB? The posting of intimate conversations is also annoying, though I admit I once did the "I love you, honey" thing.

TodayÂ’s bride embraces all forms of technology to bore everyone--she tweets, she FBs, she has her own blog, and in some cases she even sends update e-mails.
It’s one thing to do something simple, like those pages that are “the story of us” where it does talk about how the couple met and how they got engaged and some wedding details because for some of the people they invite to their wedding they may not know all the details and are interested.
But, some people have to take it a bridge too far. When they start tweeting from the wedding cake sampling for example. “Vote for our wedding cake flavor now at poll inanity dot com”

ThatÂ’s what scares me because as a Mom it freaks me out to think of my son being touched like that and yet thereÂ’s nothing I can do about it, and if I decide flying that day isnÂ’t worth the pat down, they can hold me there at the airport and even possibly arrest me.

This is their commercial: Favourable Lie

It sort of bothers me when my friends post so many pictures of their children, and videos too. I mean I know people have privacy settings etc. but still, those can be gotten around. And, they post details about where the video is taken etc. so that you know what their typical schedule is.
I donÂ’t know, I guess I must have a criminal mind or something because I immediately think of all the bad things that could happen.

Little did I know that Kirk would use me as a guinea pig to see if something was too hot to touch or too dangerous to go. Hey, we don't know if we're beaming down into molten lava, let's send Chekov!

The Next Generation? Are you talking about that massive Frisbee-shaped clusterfuck that took our old ship's name and had a bridge that looked like the lobby of the Regulus Marriott? Yeah, I was there. Saw her off when she was launched. Let me tell you, I was laughing my ass off the entire time. Just wait'll these baby-faced fuckers found out what kind of horrors they were going to have to deal with out there in deep brainfucking space.
Really, the opportunity for a little schadenfreude was about the only thing that could have dragged my 137-year-old ass off the porch. I'm OLD, God damn it. I've DONE this shit and DEALT with these fucking parodies of nature with weird shit on their foreheads and CURED stuff like Rigellian fever and Antarean clap and even put Spock's fucking BRAIN back in his lime-green head. I even FOUND A CURE FOR DEATH, for Christ's sweet fucking sake. How many other ship's doctors did THAT? The fucking quack on the Exeter couldn't even keep his crew from turning into exploded packets of FUCKING SWEET 'N LOW in orbit of a planet where everyone else lived to SIX THOUSAND and here I am in a cramped sickbay unlocking the secrets of Life itself. Yeah, motherfuckers, you better fucking BELIEVE I deserved a promotion to Admiral.
Anyway, where was I? Oh yeah, the "Enterprise-D" or whatever they called it. (Real fucking cute.) I had some sickly-looking fucking robot who kept blathering on about how he wanted to fuck the tactical officer escorting me around all day. He was a joke; the ship was a joke; the entire fucking crew of Spandex-wearing shitheads were a joke. The men wore miniskirts, for the love of shit. What was that all about? In my day we kept the WOMEN in miniskirts manning the switchboards and doing the laundry. Those were the good old days, I tell ya, before all this touchy-feely metrosexual ratshit infected the service.... oh fuck where was I ANYWAY Astroboy showed me the hotel-lobby bridge, that sucked; I met the new ship's doctor and her bitch-ass genius kid and wanted to kill myself right there; I even ran into Captain Baldo and told him in no uncertain terms that his effete French faggot ass had better GET ITS SHIT TOGETHER AND DO SOMETHING about this sad joke of a ship before he got everyone under his command killed. This isn't a fucking pleasure cruise to Alpha Centauri, I told the frog; you may think you can run around in these painted-on uniforms with your cock hanging out on this shitfuck of a vessel that looks like a 1980s Kenmore appliance ad but you're going out into DEEP FUCKING SPACE, FRENCHIE, and it's not PLEASANT out there. All your fucking around is going to get everyone KILLED.
I don't know if fucking Frogboy heard me; he just wandered back into his Ready Room to ruminate over a cup of fucking tea, if you can believe it. Yeah, I figured, this ship is definitely fucked. So I let C-3PO drag me back down to the airlock, but before I disembarked he showed me this weird fucking thing he called the "holo-deck". Tell it what I want to see, the droid said, and it'll appear right there in the room as some kind of hologrammatic light show. Okay you fucking blasted machine, I said, I'LL TELL THIS FUCKING SHIP what I want to see, and lo and behold when the doors opened there was Chapel, 27 years old, tits even bigger than I remember them and wearing nothing but a giant shit-eating smile and the cuffs that were pinning her ankles behind her ears.
So I pulled rank and told Talky Toaster to go pound sand, and my flight back to Georgia was delayed. Several years later I heard they blew the whole thing up by letting the God damned woman psychiatrist drive the fucking thing right into a planet, which is about the way I expected that tin can to go. A shame about the holo-thing though.

One reason might be they don't have access to the hall that early.
But most likely its bad planning. Most guests are like extras, just there for effect around the star and costars. They slip out of mind. And it doesn't help that the weddings are as complicated as minor military operations, but orgainzed by someone who has never done it before and isn't thinking to clearly.

My eldest cousin (as mentioned above) had a cash bar. It kind of made sense because no one in her church drinks - but I think they shouldn't have had a bar at all, then. Not only that, she didn't give anyone party favors. Our "party favor" was a card that said, "We donated money to our favorite Christian charity for you." Wow. Thanks.

I've had two party favors from weddings - one was a pre-party favor. All out of town guests (all of us, I guess, since it was at a hotel) got little bags full of good snacks (fruit, trailmix, water). Lifesavers after a long day of travel.

The last Chinese wedding I went to the party favor was fancy silver chopsticks in a pretty little bag. Chinese receptions suck, but they have some pretty good party favors.
The cousin whose wedding I was in, their favors were shotglasses that said, "I got lei'd at [cousin] and [cousin in law]'s wedding." It was a Hawaiian themed wedding.

I haven't a clue either. Drinking alcohol is not forbidden in the Bible. In fact, in Deut 14, God allowed the Israelites to exchange their tithes for money to purchase fermented drinks to celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles. However, drunkenness is frowned upon, as Paul mentioned several times in the NT.
Some Christian sects go way to the extreme and keep Old Testament kosher laws, such as some Seventh Day Adventists, IIRC. My college friend's father went so far as to not eat any seafood or drink any alcohol at all, and was adamant that Church had to be attended on Saturday.

Depends. The Catholic Church performs Closed Communions, so you'd have to be baptized Catholic to receive communion.
Most Protestant Churches perform Open Communions and baptism isn't required (at least that I know of). Regardless, Communions should be for believers only.

Well, you figure before we turn this guy over to Starfleet to answer for grand theft shuttle, another mime shows up with some fucking invisible ship whose been hunting this guy down like he's some sort of checkerboard Lt Gerard. It was bad enough that these two wouldn't shut the fuck up about politics, but they had some sort of funky talent for generating heat and electricity from their bodies and Lt Gerard could actually mind fuck the control computers into steering the ship to some bitch planet called Sharon. In the meantime Kirk is shitting in his girdle because besides the highway patrol duty we're supposed to drop off some sort of vaccine that's got a few days left before the whole batch goes bad. All that work rigging the dispersal nozzles looked like it was going to be a big waste of time, but Kirk finds his balls and tells the checkerboard boys he'd nuke his own ship if mind-fuck didn't return the navigation back to him.
Well, good thing I wrote the code down on a bar napkin, because I had to give the frigging 3rd code before Jimbo would give the order to cash in our own chips. Kirk's luck kicked in once again when Bounty Hunter blinked before it was too late for Kirk to back off the self immolation
Well, Checkerboard the Bounty Hunter figured out how to fry the self destruct files of the computer, leaving some more shit I'd spend weeks fixing and back we headed to Lisa or Nancy or whatever bitch name their planet was called
We just about get there after listening to those two assholes ignore Kirk's wimpy please for "compromise" and "civility", and Spock looks through the scanner to tell them their homeworld now looked like fuckin' Detroit.
We offered to take them to another place that could stand having them around, but they just couldn't shut the fuck up and beamed themselves down to New Newark to duke it out for centuries. Good riddance

This is a long one. Can we pick it up, tomorrow... if either of us are around? I started to answer, but this will take some time. I'm sure there are some still around who will continue, but if you're up to it we can continue, tomorrow... or you could hit me up via email... uh, somehow, since you're not in the yahoo group.

Being exiled from your native country because of Communist invasion gives you a new perspective on how tyrannical big governments can become.
From what I can recall, you are right about Americans of Vietnamese decent being the most Republican-friendly amongst Americans with Asian ancestry. My sophomore year Army ROTC college instructor fled Vietnam as one of the "boat people" with his parents after Saigon fell.

I just pass it to the person next to me, which I guess is refusing it. But the last two Catholic events I went to (a funeral and a wedding), only those who wanted to receive Communion did so.

I also have a Vietnamese friend who I met in college. His family are all staunch Republicans and all have served (or will serve) in the US military in some fashion. He complained to me several times that all the Americans he knew of Chinese or Japanese decent voted straight Dem.

Since Editor seems to be delayed, I'll take a shot. I was born and raised Catholic and haven't seen a reason to change. Catholicism has 2000 years of thought and tradition behind it, and plenty of mistakes that hopefully have taught us something. Judaism is the foundation, Christians see Jesus as the fufillment of their religion. Jews do not see it this way, of course.
As to why, the ethics of Judeo Christianity are the basis for our entire civilization that has pretty much covered the world. Attempts to base eithics in other places have produced monsters like Communism, or feeble systems that borrow the concepts isolated from the causes. This hardly is a sound basis to build a world on. In effect they are trying to be free riders. It can't work for long.

I don't even bother trying. All of them are children of immigrants. One of them is full on moonbatty. She's a lawyer and lives in SF. No converting that one. The other two are apolitical mostly, but definitely lean D. One of them, during the 2008 election, said she believed both McCain and Obama to be honorable men. She also thought Sarah Palin was stupid to put her family in the spotlight and "allow" all the viciousness against Bristol. They're all about helping people and I guess they think the gov't should be the one to do it.

It's been a while since I attended, but I've never (asfaik) been to a church that passed around the communion plate. We usually went up and the pastor did the passing out of the bread and wine part. Anyone who didn't want communion stayed in their seats.
I would say to just politely pass the plate.

so another question about baptism: i'm aware that in Catholicism, baptism is supposed to wash away original sin, but is that the purpose for Protestant baptism too? I get the impression that baptism means something else, beyond just original sin

Yes, we don't actually really know what baptism is other than an obedient thing to do. We don't know why he says to do it (though many will claim they do). It's a public statement of your commitment to Christ. Not much more than that. Believers who have not been baptised are no less believers.

Asia is a big place, with a history that eclipses that of the West in depth and breadth (though not necessarily in height). There are grudges that make the Serb/Bosnian thing look like a Sunday picnic, and stuff about 'ethnic purity' or 'religious observance' that would make people cringe if they knew about just the outline (and would piss people off beyond belief were they to know the details).
There are almost twice as many Thai as there are Spanish, and the uplands and peninsular people are vastly more different than the people of Castile and Aragon -- and Spain had an empire from California to Tierra del Fuego in the New World. Everyone in that area knows about the Spanish Armada, Ferdinand and Isabella, the Moorish conquest, the Spanish Inquisition, Granada and Madrid.....oh, and "Asians".
I freely admit that I know jack dick about the histories of the Asian peoples -- but I have some sense of how much there is out there. We've got about 2000 years of well-documented history -- e.g. where there have been Romans and French (Franks)......they've got about 4000 years of well-documented history about Bengali and Malays and Cantonese, Japanese and Koreans, Islanders and mountain people, steppe riders and fortress builders.
Trying to lump together a group whose diversity substantially exceeds "European" is a bit of a stretch. Trying to give them a single political viewpoint just won't work.

I agree with this, but isn't that in and of itself subjective? I mean what hard proof do we have that that is anything more special than someone "getting it mostly right" back then? Couldn't you keep the framework and discard the rest?
The religion is the framework. Thou shalt not kill is the result. They why is because every man is god's creation.
why couldn't people pervert a religion into something? I almost see the latter as more frigthening (see the radical Islamists). If you're fighting for Communism, you're fighting for an ideology & a state, if you're a radical fighting for religion, you're fighting for a 'higher power' that cannot, by definition, be proven wrong
They can and they do. God can't be wrong, men speaking for him can and are. All human institutions have failings. Part of sticking with an established one is that hopefully they have learned this already.
It seems to me that we should be at the point where we don't have to base our assumptions on the unproveable
Might be nice, but it hasn't happened yet.

Before I came out here, I didn't realize how big LA county is. It probably takes an hour to cross it from Ventura Co to Orange, at midnight with no traffic. Or an hour and a half.
You don't just pop down to Orange County from the Valley.

It seems to me that we should be at the point where we don't have to base our assumptions on the unproveable. You raise valid points with regards to Communism but just like someone could pervert Atheism into Communism (and obviously that's verrrrrrrrrrry simplistic in and of itself as Communism had - indeed was primarily -composed of other elements - class warefare & all), why couldn't people pervert a religion into something? I almost see the latter as more frigthening (see the radical Islamists). If you're fighting for Communism, you're fighting for an ideology & a state, if you're a radical fighting for religion, you're fighting for a 'higher power' that cannot, by definition, be proven wrong. Therefore you are always right. Because you are "good" and they are "evil".
I think the point he's trying to make is that if you try to keep the frame work and discard the rest, you're left with something pretty hollow and not going to last. You're also likely to try filling in that framework with a bunch of bullshit that will pervert your goal.
And you're also right in asking about people perverting a religion into something else. However most religions seem to be designed to stop those efforts or push them away. And it is stuff that does happen going back to the crusades where some soldiers decided that a Crusade to retake the Holy Land involved killing Jews in the Rhineland. The Pope excommunicated the ones responsible. So yeah you're right in that it could theoretically be perverted for the wrong goals but it doesn't seem like history holds that evidence that any attempts have been successful.

Well, maybe not that long. I used to go up to Hollywood to watch movies at the Arclight and would get out after midnight, and would have the 5 all to myself all the way back to Anaheim. Pretty sure it didn't take more than half an hour to get home at those times.
During the day though, yeah. Going from the Valley to anywhere in OC is a definite trip, and not the good kind.

The rise of Isamism is partly because the Islamic world lost its structure when the Mongols sacked Baghdad and killed the Caliph. Since then pretty much anyone can become a mahdi, if he can get followers. This means that instead of the one organization deciding that Wahabis are unislamic, you have 20 saying yea and 20 nay, and the naysayers have weapons on their side.
Usually organizations have enough stake in the future to be disturbed by ultra radicalism.

Sounds like you took it as intended.....if you look at the time between the posts, it was taken up by my attempting to share the humor involved while not unintentionally sounding dismissive or negative. In the West, we live our entire lives with details about the leadership change between Julius and Augustus in Rome -- but miss out on the rise and fall of empires in the East.
The people of such a dynamic area will all have an exciting and detailed history -- even if it's different for each person who we meet. But they all disembark through the same immigration processing at SFO.

Also I consider Islam to be a bit fundamentally different. I mean one of Islams primary method to convert is by the sword. That is a method acceptable to them and that seems to be a part of their belief system that can allow them a lot of leeway in things. Christianity is different. Their method of conversion is based on preaching the Word of God and spreading Christs message. I think conversion by the sword did happen when you had instances of the barbarian proto-kingdoms converting and then going on a conquest but that method has been mostly frowned upon, and has even had instances of the Pope smacking down the people that try and telling the forced converts that their conversions don't count if they do not choose to remain Christian.
And OT: I was taking a break from the blog and was playing some Empire: Total War. Interestingly enough one of the load screens had a quote come up that was relevant to a topic discussed on the blog this week. It had a quote from Madison that basically said calling him the writer of the Constitution is a load of horseshit and the credit is due to many people and not just him.
Posted by: buzzion at November 21, 2010 11:51 PM (oVQFe)
But that raises an interesting thought. I wouldn't mind this crap nearly as much if it were being conducted by current members of the military. I guess it's a confidence thing.
Funny. I recently had a conversation with a guy who I will call John (I call him that, for a host of reasons but mostly, because his name really is John) who was a retired LEO who did some duty, screening airline passengers immediately post 9/11.
"So John, are you cool with this shit?"
"I basically don't have any problem with deploying these pat-down searches and training personnel to do them in a professional manner, so yes. Yes, Deety I am "cool with this shit"!
"So, if I were a speeder 20 years ago and you or one of your guys caught me, I should expect the same treatment?"
"Oh, Hell No! There is nothing in the law that even closely allows for this! (You and your hypothetical case of lead foot!) if you are truly curious Deety, about law enforcement, you should do something worthy of landing you in the county jail."
"Which would be worse, boss? Buying a ticket or committing a crime?"
"Well, as far as personal dignity goes, you are probably better off in the county jail than in an airport right now. That being said, in jail, they don't give you your shoes back."
"Seriously, boss? No shoes? None at all?"
"They give them sandals."
"I don't know. Sounds kinda scary to me. I shall endeavor, as always, to never-ever be a bank-robber! I'm not sure that I can avoid air travel though..."
"Gawd you are a fucking jackass, aren't you?"
