Overnight Thread - Thanksgiving Edition
— Open Blogger

Sarah Palin's Thanksgiving Day Message

My fellow Americans in all 57 states, the time has changed for come. With our country founded more than 20 centuries ago, we have much to celebrate – from the FBI’s 100 days to the reforms that bring greater inefficiencies to our health care system. We know that countries like Europe are willing to stand with us in our fight to halt the rise of privacy, and Israel is a strong friend of Israel’s. And let’s face it, everybody knows that it makes no sense that you send a kid to the emergency room for a treatable illness like asthma and they end up taking up a hospital bed. It costs, when, if you, they just gave, you gave them treatment early, and they got some treatment, and ah, a breathalyzer, or an inhalator. I mean, not a breathalyzer, ah, I don’t know what the term is in Austrian for that…

Despite my occassional criticism of her this why I love Sarah. Let the press beat up on you a little then stuff it back in their faces.

A valuable life lesson - Call the Better Business Bureau not the police

The next time Ryan McNames wants to lodge a consumer complaint, heÂ’ll know better than to call the Columbia Police Department.

The Missouri man, 19, dialed cops Saturday night to report that he paid $60 to a pair of prostitutes to perform sexual acts for him.

...

He also requested that officers contact the woman who did not fellate him and “get $40 of his money back,” police reported.

This woman needs to be beaten with a sockful of batteries

For breakfast, I usually have a cappuccino—espresso made in an Alessi pot and mixed with organic milk, which has been gently heated and hand-fluffed by my husband. I eat two slices of imported cheese—Dutch Parrano, the label says, “the hippest cheese in New York” (no joke)—on homemade bread with butter. I am what you might call a food snob. My nutritionist neighbor drinks a protein shake while her 5-year-old son eats quinoa porridge sweetened with applesauce and laced with kale flakes. She is what you might call a health nut. On a recent morning, my neighbor’s friend Alexandra Ferguson sipped politically correct Nicaraguan coffee in her comfy kitchen while her two young boys chose from among an assortment of organic cereals. As we sat, the six chickens Ferguson and her husband, Dave, keep for eggs in a backyard coop peered indoors from the stoop. The Fergusons are known as locavores.

I don't really know what else to say except get over yourself lady. Yes, you make some points about food insecurity but even those are pretensious twaddle. If you really want to make a difference donate to a food bank.

h/t Instapundit

That's it for tonight. It's a holiday so have fun enjoy the family (speaking of which the al-Jazeera correspondent I was supposed to be supping with cancelled, so I am truly thankful.) So thankful that I will skip mentioning that the Army of Morons World of Warcraft guild is still recruiting on the Hellscream US server.

Edit: spelling correction made in title.

39 Food insecurity is especially high in households headed by a single mother. It is most severe in the South, and in big cities.

Perhaps clustering a poor dependent class into cities that are no longer needed isn't the best way to structure a society...even if you can get them to vote for you and your friends...

43 the distance between rich and poor continues to grow, the freshest, most nutritious foods have become luxury goods that only some can afford.

Back when I was making almost nothing as a college student, I could somehow always afford enough nutritious food to get by. No organic, no imported, no hip food. But enough calories and nutrients to not starve...

Yes, some people can't easily get to a grocery store in the inner cities...but as I pointed out above maybe this is a problem with clustering them in cities to begin with?!?

93 "This woman needs to be beaten with a sockful of batteries ."
Damn right ! These people are a fuckin' plague upon the earth .
This coming from someone like me , a real locavore , or as much as one can be in these United States . Wife's chicken flock provided the numerous eggs involved in the feast , the star of the meal was "harvested" about 270 yds from my back door. He was really reluctant to parcipitate too .  Damn gobbler was flaunting himself with a bunch of hens for two weeks in my neighbors field before he'd finally come to my calls  at a reasonable shotgun range . The sausage in the dressing was killed  about 200 yds from same back door .

If , god forbid , a total collapse ever occurs , I'm going to keep a couple of over educated urban metrosexuals around to do simple chores . Nothing of real import, just wood cutting , garden weeding , things of that nature , as it's obvious they can't be trusted to do skilled tasks .I'll have my ten yr. old keep an eye on 'em, you know , tell 'em when to come in out of the rain , take a bath , tie their shoes , that kind of stuff .

xbox360.

And pat yourself on the head for not even including the Wii in it.

(also do you play multiplayer games, if so 360 hands down)

Yeah, wii is great, but it is targeted for like 5-13 year olds.

The last consol I has was PS2, which was great. PS3 is 100 bucks more than xbox 360, but i think they have all the same games.

111 I love when she starts going on about how they need to start talking about the food crisis in Washington DC.  This woman has no clue as to the real reason that there is food insecurity in this country today.

Incidentally, I don't understand how cooking at home and shopping can be more expensive than fast food.  I've always eaten well and for less when I could cook for myself, and this was using nothing but the local supermarket.

Of course, from a young age, my parents required my sister and I to help in the kitchen, and mom often left $20 on the counter and a note that said "Working late, it's Fend For Yourself Night".

189 ...OK, I read that whole Newsweek food article, and it's stupid.  The woman with two kids on food stamps is buying "bodega food", McDonald's, donuts and lattes at Dunkin Donuts, Chinese takeout...but she's not buying fruit or vegetables because they're "too expensive"?  And this is the fault of the government and people who make more money than she does, and not her own damn fault?

(Full disclosure: There's some bananas--59 cents a pound, or "one banana is way the fuck cheaper than a donut"--rotting on my kitchen counter because last time I went grocery shopping I thought they would taste good on peanut butter toast, then I had weather-related sinus migraines all week and didn't eat breakfasts)

244 Alexandra says she spends hours each day thinking about, shopping for, and preparing food. She is a disciple of Michael Pollan, whose 2006 book The Omnivore’s Dilemma made the locavore movement a national phenomenon, and believes that eating organically and locally contributes not only to the health of her family but to the existential happiness of farm animals and farmers—and, indeed, to the survival of the planet. “Michael Pollan is my new hero, next to Jimmy Carter,” she told me.

Without reading another sentence penned by Alexandra, this tells me all I need to know about her.

True.  My grandmother loves to tell the story of the Christmas we had when I was 4 years old.  Allegedly, I had received a small stockpile of gifts but I ended up playing with two spoons and one of the toy boxes all day.

278 300 293 True.  My grandmother loves to tell the story of the Christmas we had when I was 4 years old.  Allegedly, I had received a small stockpile of gifts but I ended up playing with two spoons and one of the toy boxes all day.

I have never received independent confirmation of this story, so I still claim it is a fabrication.  "Pics or it didn't happen" and all that, .

My mom has pics from my 1st b-day, and it appears I was absolutely fascinated by the wrapping paper and bows. "Pretty colors!"

Agreed.  The next time Kim Jong Ill tries anything, anything at all, we should kill him, his family, and all of his top military generals and their families.  They should be the ones who suffer, not the brainwashed commoners.  Then the pimple on the ass of the world known as North Korea may have a chance to be excised and cleansed.

China won't allow it, of course.  Any war between the Koreas will most likely end up in victory for the South, albeit a costly victory.  Millions of refuges will flee into China.  Also, China prefers a divided Korea for historical reasons.

I will definitely visit home for Christmas and New Year's. This is just one of those strange years. But we don't really have the entire family over for Thanksgiving (they're on the Left Coast); Christmas is a much bigger deal, actually.

Also hope I didn't rain on anyone's parade. I'm thankful that Fall Break wasn't that long ago and it's almost Christmas Break.

I cover mine with a clear vinyl sheeting. It comes in 36" and 48" rolls 25' long. Put it up with wood lath and a staple gun. Do it inside and out, and there is no "puffing." Creates a dead air space, which is a great natural insulator. Come spring, I take the outside off and on the inside I just take it loose at the bottom, roll it up to about halfway to the top of the window and tack it in place. That way I can open windows for a breeze in the warm weather and recovering the inside is quick and easy the next winter. The stuff is 4 mil, so it is pretty durable and lasts for several seasons.

It is also as clear as looking through glass. Great stuff.

Yeah, they also have the Vikes but both that game and the Lions are on the road. And yes, the rest of the sched is pretty tough as well.

Kratos, njc's happiness may be short-lived.

I'm a Colts fan, and their remaining schedule is so-so, but they are so beat up with injuries I'm surprised they've won as many games as they have.

If it's a small group, as it was this year, sis inisists that we all sit at the table. But if we have a large group, then we have to disperse a little bit.

That's when all we football watchers say, "Hey, let the kids sit at the grown-up table for Thanksgiving. They'll get a kick out of it."

And we load up our plates and head for the tv trays in front of the tube.

513 Good Morning Morons

I hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving and not those horrid ordeals described in the horror post yesterday. I had a beautiful day with an orgy of eating.

My day was estimated at 3300 calories. With 660 mg of cholesterol. I say estimated because I didn't have my scales to weigh out portions with, and of course I would never "fudge" those estimates. Especially not when we had a fudge cobbler topped with hi-test ice cream for desert.

Posted by: Vic at November 26, 2010 03:11 AM (e4sSD)

514 In reference to that linked article about the incredibly stupid libtard from NYC the kind of crap she said is what I expect from that segment of the population.

What pisses me off is that release from the FDA:

According to data released last week by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 17 percent of Americans—more than 50 million people—live in households that are “food insecure,” a term that means a family sometimes runs out of money to buy food, or it sometimes runs out of food before it can get more money.

So we have a new stupid libtard commie term "food insecure".  Having the FDA come up with "data" like this is tantamount to having a used car lot releasing data through its "salesmen" representatives about people who are "travel insecure". All we need is a borderline criminal with a low IQ in a plaid suit telling us we need more government supplied pre-owned vehicles because this poor drug addled bum laying in the gutter at the corner of Archer and Taylor Ave doesn't have a car.

Of course this woman would help that drug addled bum by buying a BWM without a sun roof at the same time she screamed for the government to provide free bus rides for the bum so he travel back and forth from the shelter to the alleys where he can score his hit for the day.

The truth is that there is absolutely no reason for any child in the United States to be hungry. The welfare program in the U.S. has once again expanded beyond all measure. This time in the name of "the children".   We have seen stories of welfare moms scoring $80,000 a year in direct payments and then added food coupons to support hordes of illegitmate children.

The United States (and possibly the U.K.) are the only countries in the world where poor "hungry" children are more in danger from diseases like diabetes due solely to the fact that they are morbidly obese. Contrary to what the lying scrunts say nutritious food is NOT expensive. The U.S. has the cheapest groceries on earth when compared to available income. These poor overweight "food insecure" people are that way because the "mothers" are lazy and uneducated (because they were lazy).

Again, the solution to this problem. NEVER vote for a Democrat or a RINO ever again.

Posted by: Vic at November 26, 2010 03:29 AM (e4sSD)

515 And as usual, the socialist justice idea of How To Fix Inequality is to spread the misery.  (See: railing against GM foodstuffs, shoving corn in our gas tanks, etc.)

That's out of the way, back to enjoying the holiday.  (Though if the quality of the TV I'm having to watch doesn't improve, I may call on my fellow Morons to put me out of my misery.)

My understanding was that that SCHIP bill that passed with the help of numerous RINOs now has government coverage for children up until they pass age 25.

There may be some "conditions" to that, but you may wish to look into it. It is probably "means tested" so that it contributes to that host of things that makes indigents have more disposable income than someone working and making 60K a year.

Quinoa porridge and kale flakes...that sounds really tasty; there's a kid who's going to grow into an angry adult.  And what the hell is so special about Nicaraguan coffee?

I also notice these precious, wealthy bastards can keep chickens and whatnot to keep up with their affectations...but the working and lower middle class, even in rural towns, cannot, because of zoning ordanances and animal keeping regulations.  Yes, I just did the class warfare thing by calling these cats "wealthy bastards", won't take it back (because they are; let's face it: these people make a lot more money than most; they can afford freaking Danish cheese for God's sake -- and they vote just as "preciously" as they eat, which ruins the rest of the country...they are the "rich" I'd loved to see taxed into ruin -- and by the way: while they are usually brand D there are a lot of brand R who are of the same ilk; I could care less about them).

609  I said "seriously"...and somehow I am doubting it brevity of your explanation   Perhaps I asked incorrectly, because fluffed (manual or otherwise) coffee beverages seem a bit odd to me.

And Vic's right: but I'll qualify it -- food prices are going through the roof, but whenever anyone brings up the idea of allowing just plain folks to keep gardens or some chickens (you know, be self sufficient), it's people exactly like these fluffed coffee drinkers that put the kibosh on it -- damages their property values, and the animals may not be kept the way they (and HSUS) approve of...and well, it damages their property prices (yeah, I've had run ins with them).

And the day may be quickly coming where those gardens and chickens are going to be needed, when the poor really aren't all that fat.

544 I have some friends who always eat organic food, drink powdered nutrition shakes that cost 40 dollars a canister, and see their chiropractor/healer/svengali twice a week.  Then they complain about how poor they are.  And they complain that the government won't help them because they feel they are poor and the government disagrees (they have a combined income of over 100k).

They get pissed when I point out that poor people are people who can't afford to put any food on the table.  Not just super-expensive organic gourmet food but any food at all.

Oh, and they just dropped 5 grand on a big TV and his-n-hers matching laptops.  He got a 1,800 dollar Alienware gaming netbook.  He spent 2 grand on a fucking netbook and they're whining about how poor they are!

612  To be fair, my chickens would hop up and peek in the window at feeding time; peck on it and cluck if you were running late.  They can be fairly nice pets; well, the few you allow to be, the rest get eaten when they lose egg production value.  As for the poop...well, theirs, if they are chickens being taken care of decently, is no more dangerous than the dog shit you see on the streets, and it composts well for the garden, unlike dog shit (eww, nasty).  Plus you just keep it picked up -- manure fork, muck bucket...hand to kids, tell them to earn their keep...no problems

Yeah, I liked my chickens (when I was allowed to keep them -- zoning ordanances got me last year, no more goats, no more chickens, had to move my horses to a rented place -- actually my military serving kids...I had to sell all but my old show horse, now the younger kids' lesson pony, to afford the move).

546 In the 19th century, fat was called "portly" and considered an admirable, attractive sign of wealth and success. The ideal female figure was rounded, with thighs and butt fuller than a man's. Today's fashionably thin waifs would not turn heads, back then. I think we can blame the media for foisting anorexic values on society.

Unknown Jane,

God bless the service of your military children!

Jane, I like your thinking. Actually, that sounds like pretty much the working world in general.

617 Those are exactly the people I'm talking about.  Those and the ones who do home improvements they can't afford, get in over their heads, don't pay their credit off, then go around and act like the neighborhood lawn cops because it isn't the fault of the housing market that they can't flip their house for big bucks and pay their bills...it's the poor slob down the street who didn't pay to get his garage re-sided...or the poor slob a block away on the edge of town who has livestock (who were there before Mr./Mrs. Flip this House...yeah, I'm bitter).

I have noticed that the granola munchers do tend to vote D and identify as liberal, but the other ones tend to vote R and identify as conservative.

I prefer to call them both assholes, and think they are ruining our country -- because each in his/her own way wants the world to run according to how they decree...and they want to get a cookie for just being so wonderful.

554 625  It was, but the boy and I did morning chores (and the temperature dropped like crazy in the past 24 hrs.) and on my second cup of coffee -- so hell, I'm wide awake!

Vic -- that story you reference appears to be I-net BS...do you know of the original story link?

Posted by: billygoat at November 26, 2010 09:23 AM (5qJM5)

Sorry for the late response. I have been working a different computer upstairs (complete fail).

In any case that story was linked in one of the threads on here a few days ago. I believe it was the "Monty Gloom and Doom" replacement thread.

Anyway it linked to another site which provided a chart from various income levels vs taxes and benefits you could get. That site in turn referenced back to one of the alphabet soup of federal agencies.

558 okay, I survived the shopping horde
went to K-mart around 6:30, got (close to) the deal I wanted
it only had 7 registers! argh! it took an hour to get out of there
then, went to walmart just to see what it was like - it was like a usual day, no huge crowds or anything

so, uneventful all around
