Palin In Iowa
— DrewM

If, like me, you are living the life and watching CSPAN on a Friday night, Palin is about to speak at the Iowa Republican Reagan Dinner.

Let the 2012 GOP speculation games officially begin!

Coming soon...Murky's announcement.

It's Alaska night here at the HQ.

Drinking game?

Added: She's going after Murkowski. Not by name but addressing 'candidates who have lost their primaries', 'primary voters have spoken'.

Is it true that Merfkowski is still the head of the energy committee for republicans?

Why hasn't she been stripped of this job yet?

Also Drew, since it is a write in campaign, we need to start intentionally misspelling her name

"hilarious. you assholes are NOW saying things like "what Sarah said". TOO LATE. you establishment losers attacked Christine O'Donnell, and sat on your asses and supported some RINO scumbag like Mike Castle. fuck off. you are nothing to real Americans. NOTHING. I'm waiting to be shown, through her accomplishments and specific policy initiatives, that Palin is something more than a smart, attractive spouter of high-minded generalities.

And you'll make a helluva lot of friends among those who haven't made up their minds by going into attack mode right off the bat, especially when calling someone a RINO has been so overused as to lose all meaning.

56 Let's not forget that NY Repubs have picked the " crazy guy" from Buffalo for running against Cuomo.  Lots of 'not the incumbent' fever running the nation right now.

The problem is the GOP isn't listening.  Too many are tired of the same old shit in DC and Albany and the other capitals.  The GOP thinks they are the answer and to paraphrase Reagan... "Government is not a solution to our problem, government is the problem."  Right now the GOP is stuck in the mode of ignore the people.  O'Donnell is right in the 'We the People' meme.

Surprise.. They work for us.  And this year they will be reminded of that fact.

It's time the weirdos and right wing radicals take back DC and stop things from becoming worse.  Obambi is not the problem.. he's a symptom.

Right now? I'd have to say "none of the above," though Christie looks good, at least for his ballsy stance on budget/union issues.

But he, and everyone else, have some 'splainin' to do if they choose to run in '12. I've only crossed two names off the list: Shuckabee and Mutt Romney.

If we're stuck with one of those two against the Mohammedan Mouthpiece, I'll go all LOTE, just as I did in '08. And I won't like it any better than I did then.

78 MrScribbler,  Palin negotiated that Canada gas line,  which is no small accomplishment.  She has actually created JOBS.

Aside from that,   I should point out that she is runninng quite an operation from Wasilla,  Alaska (which I prefer to think of as The Arctic Stronghold).  She has managed to derail the healthcare acclamations of the democrats,  to the point they are refusing to talk about it.  She has been crossing the country helping candidates win elections.  She is speaking out for conservative principals.  She has managed to get Obama off message and reacting to her every word.

And she is doing this with a staff of 10.

I don't know if she will run or not.  She may prefer the freedom of fighting guerilla warfare and not dealing with a large campaign staff.  She is very effective as an encourager.

She is a very serious person who has already taken a lot of fire from the media-dnc consortium,  and is wiling to spend a lot of time firing Republicans and conservatives up.  Other candidates seem to me to be paying it safe.

I appreciate her contributions to the effort.

82 Incidentally, my 2012 list of realistic candidates is probably Daniels, Pawlenty (no joke: he's seriously underrated), maybe Pence or even Romney.  Heavy emphasis on fiscal conservatism, and a particular desire to downplay the importance of socon issues.  NO MORE HUCKABEES.

Way back when, I started by asking basic questions about Palin's experience, and got abuse, platitudes and references to Facebook postings in return.

And people who breathlessly post "Sarahcuda!," "ooooh, I love her!" "thrilla from Wasilla" and all that jive are not exactly helping their love-object project any kind of serious, capable air. They're fapping.

87 Republican Pres Primaries, and debates are my Super Bowl and Oscars....I always wait until after the debates to choose my nominee.

It is so exciting, can't wait!

As far as SP goes, I used to watch her on Charlie Rose (before 0 talking about energy issues, and it never entered my mind that she was not competent.

She also had a high approval rating in AK, had a reputation of working with the Dems, editorials were praising her for her oil co dealings, and for her surprising agility during her q & a with the editorial boards, where they stated that she was the 1st Gov ever to come into meetings with them without aides and staff.

So, all this was written BEFORE McCain chose her. I don't know what happened to her during that campaign.  DC just chewed her up, and McCain's staff hates conservatives (as does he).

So my bet is she is not running.

But if she starts to travel...to Israel, UK.....then I would guess she is going to go for it.

I wouldn't let gossip magazine articles about her family life deter me from  serious consideration of her as a presidental candidate.

I certainly feel more positive about her than I did after the election and (especially) after her sudden resignation.  But despite her awesome influence as kingmaker, she *STILL* hasn't shown me anything that would qualify her for the Presidency.  Don't tell me "she can win" as if that's a justification for putting her in the Oval Office.  Hey, 2008 proved that if you nominate a complete cipher as your Democratic candidate, then HE can win provided the right circumstances.  So that doesn't show me anything.

She still needs to earn it from me.  Hasn't yet.  She can do it, theoretically, but I suspect she isn't all that interested.

Posted by: A Balrog of Morgoth at September 17, 2010 05:57 PM (Snu7z)

91 Ok.. lemme be blunt here.

First, I love Palin.  She's a great personality and has done wonders this election season as being a cheerleader for conservative candidates.

But.. she's a lightweight.  She's not that bright.  Either she doesn't care or she doesn't have the mental wherewithal to tackle the complex issues of our day.

And let me be even more frank.. anyone who thinks she was anything more than a disaster in her debate with Biden is, in my book, blind.  She was as embarrassing as you can get with her ignorance of most subjects even a House member should be familiar with, much less a President. And even if she was fluent in those subjects, she completely failed to show she was, which is even worse than a good bullshit artist that most politicians are.

She's a great conservative cheerleader. nothing more.  We don't put the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders in as starters just because they are cute and have a lot of enthusiasm.

92 Slightly off topic. But can anybody name one blogger, columnist, TV talking head, or radio host that has been a supporter of Palin who was for Mike Castle? My vague observation of the 12-15 people on Fox, 15-20 bloggers, 10 news columnists and 6-7 radio hosts that I am aware of was that without exception, if you knew who you thought wasn't or was a solid fan of Palin, you knew their opinions on Castle vs. Odonnell. Especially pre election. Serious question.

93 Chitown Jerry -

FWIW, that's the impression that most polling seems to return about Palin.  I know we don't trust the guys at PPP that much, but they've done some pretty interesting polling on this matter that reflects the same point: conservatives and Republicans seem to like Palin for the most part, but are much, much, MUCH less thrilled with the idea of her being a presidential nominee.

I think a lot of us just like the idea of her as a hellraising cheerleader.

95 Chitown Jerry,

If you wanted to argue that her interviews were awful, be my guest, but I saw the same debate you did and my only conclusion is that "not that bright" is a two edged sword.

Posted by: A Balrog of Morgoth at September 17, 2010 06:01 PM (Snu7z)

96 I always figures, when she resigned, that she would spend 2010 doing two things:  One element would be PR, call it an "I'm not the Anti-Christ" tour if you will.  Hence, the books, the book tour, the deal with Fox, the TLC show, etc.

And, I figured that the second element would involve collecting chits and trying simultaneously to bridge the gap between the GOP establishment and the Tea Party while establishing herself as a queen maker.

Side note:  Say what you will about her voice or anything else, but she INSTINCTIVELY understands the mood of America right now better than anyone, because it in many ways resembles the mood in Alaska when she ran for governor.

Anyway, the second half of the equation, I figured, would be the first six months of 2011.  Policy details don't matter now.  BUT, they will matter in the first half of 2011 IF she wants to run.  And, that, if what I figured plays out, is when I suspect we'll see the details that some people wonder why we're not seeing them now.

No, it's a fair point, but you have to careful how you define "supporter of Palin."  I mean, all of here on AoSHQ are 'supporters' of Palin to a greater or lesser extent, but a lot of us just don't think she's quite Presidential timber yet.  I support her WILDLY as an unbeatable cheerleader and media-magnet and attention-rallier for our cause (yes, even when it leads to stuff like DE-SEN -- the occasional cock-up is still worth it...Sarah Palin singlehandedly helped bail out Nikki Haley from the cesspool of SC politics, solidified support for McCain and Fiorina, and put Joe Miller over the top in AK).  I don't support her as our Prez nominee.  It's all about how you define it.

100 As for the details, I'm personally curious to see how she'll run IF she runs:

If she runs as a social conservative, then she may or may not win the nomination, but she won't win the election.

If, however, she runs as she ran for governor-- as a libertarian who happens to hold personally social conservative beliefs-- then you'll see two things:

One, she'll run on three big ideas a la Reagan.  National security and national pride will be two parts.

The third part will be to make the US energy independent within 5 years by doing anything and everything to empower the states decide for themselves whether to develop their resources and to get out of the way as some states decide to develop oil resources, some decide for clean coal, some decide to build refineries, etc and as the banks holding a trillion dollars in capital stumble over one another to lend money for these projects and then as hundreds of thousands of blue collar jobs are created and then as the 500 billion that currently flows out of the economy stays, leads to a multiple in terms of GDP that increases GDP by 20%, and in turn leads to the creation of tens of millions of jobs.

Two, if that's her platform, then I go from curious onlooker who sees a ton of potential to full-fledged supporter.  Then again, I, to paraphrase George Bernard Shaw, am not one of those people who looks at things as they are and asks "why".  I'm one of those people who sees the potential and wonders "why not".

I try not to be too hard on the wild supporters.  It's just that they can be pretty friggin' hard on us, especially when we don't join them in their wild enthusiasms.

You nailed with "overly protective," though.  That's exactly the mentality here -- same thing with O'Donnell.  I don't think I'm crossing any sort of unmentionable taboos here, either, by suggesting that a huge amount of that "overprotectiveness" is due to the fact that she just happens to be a.) a woman; b.) who is cute as a button.  There's no point in even pretending that's not a serious gut-level factor: her fans defend her instinctively the way you'd swoop down to scoop a cute li'l baby out of the way of a gang shootout.  But that sort of overprotection actually harms her in the end, because it prevents a full airing of views and issues.

Actually Jeff, my point is totally on the presidential support. Of course its assumption to assume that Krauthammer-Rove-Perrieno-O'Reilly etc. don't want her to be the nominee. But thats my assumption. And they all "seem" to be not O'donnell fans either.

My point is that the Delaware race was much more then a race about Senate control. And there was a lot of Romney-Bush canidate vs. Palin quality to it. And the Romney-Bush people are going to continue to fight against Odonnell. If Odonnell can win in Delaware, Palin can win anywhere. And electability is the main argument against Palin. That election for them has more to do with 2012 then 2010. Just my take.

Huckster sounds reasonable on the radio, to me the one or two days a week I can listen (the old Paul Harvy slot).

He follows the conservative vibe I think, And so I dont understand the vile attitudes against him.

I am aware of the paroling of a convict, who i guess served his time and then went on to kill again.  How many other Govenors have had the same result?

Similarly, Pawlenty's immediate disqualification is that he's a global warming true believer, and I understand he's been free and easy letting Dems jack property taxes sky-high in MN too (my parents live there and they completely hate him - we're talking vote-for-Obama-instead levels of hate).

111 This thread is dead, so obviously it's time for my two cents worth.
I like to see Jeff B and MrScribbler polish each other's knobs. It isn't that they don't like Sarah Palin, they just haven't seen anything that makes her presidential. It doesn't matter what she accomplished in her short time as Governor of Alaska, so darn it Sickinmass, quit throwing that in their faces.

We all know that  the only people that think she can do anything other than cheerlead are of the same lower mindset crew that adores the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders. Obviously, no plain speaking person has any business in national politics. That's why Obama drops all his g's and tries to talk rural in all of his sound bytes. That's why GWB could connect with the people, even though he was way too compassionate. That's why that rube from Arkansas could charm the pants and dry cleaners bills off most of the country.

I guess I'm too simple minded to see that we need to look for someone with the charisma to take the Presidency.  No, I guess I mean  I guess I'm too stupid to see that you people haven't thrown anyone else in the ring that can beat Palin, so put up or shut up.  Make it easy for an ignorant fuck like myself.  You all are so smart and all that shit, I know it didn't take eight years to pay for your degree that it took me, so show all us ignorant bastards what we should know.

All us stupid bastards that have never seen  an unemployed day, and could call their boss a lunatic tomorrow and have another job on Monday would sure like to break through the ad-homenim (or whatever you cool cats call it?) rhetoric you guys bitch about all the time.

Best regards,

Damn, that was some righteous shit right there.

I think she is gonna do it, and she is gonna kick some serious ass.

None of the guys on the list currently can even come close to Sarah Palin in retail politicking. She is a natural superstar with people. It is something you cannot teach, you either have it or you don't, she has it and then some.

She is a fighter by nature. She likes the bloodsport of politics, enjoys the combat.
Thrives on it even. The primaries are going to be fun if she is in it. People on both sides are going to completely shit themselves watching her rack up the momentum relentlessly. No state will be conceded ahead of time, like others have done. She will fight like hell for every vote in every contest on the calendar, bar none. She won't concede New Hampshire to Romney cause it's his backyard and skip ahead to South Carolina, she will go head to head in NH, all out and may the best one win. It will be that way everywhere. She is a dynamo of energy, a hurricane. Look the fuck out.

More effective than what? You have never seen her run her own style of campaign on a national level. It won't be a 2008 rerun, I can assure you of that.

If she wants to run, she damn well should run. If she isn't effective running, well she will lose and we will all have the answer. Why should the attempt not even be made? This makes no sense to me. If you think she will fail in the primaries, then you should want her to get in there, get beat, and be right with undeniable proof.

If she jumps in, and storms through Iowa and wins handily, well then you would have been wrong and we are off to the races. If she wants to run, somebody is going to have to step up and beat her fair and square. If nobody does, then she is our girl, damn the torpedoes full speed ahead.

Really Hardy, I cannot see the signal.  Exactly what "views and issues" have not been fully aired?  The Palin cadre wants a federal government that at least resembles the one described in the Constitution.  The anti Palin crowd wants to keep on keeping on.  How does one "air" that difference any more than it has been already?

Personally, I would like to see Gov. Palin and Gov. Christie run against each other in the 2012 primary.  It would make both of them stronger.  The loser would fully support the winner.  They would raise more money than even the Beltway chevaliers can imagine.  The loser would still be young enough to take over in 2020.  And, all RINOs would be DOA for a generation.

125 Ripped off from a comment on FapperAir: "For anyone who thinks Palin as Prez would be a crap shoot, let me share this post from C4P with you. Every once in a while I visit the Indiana University Water Cooler Discussion board. Today I saw a post over there that I thought would be of interest here. Keep in mind that most of the posters there are ultra liberal, so I’m sure it made their heads explode. Here it is: CO. Hoosier, I’m not even sure that I can be classified as a “Palin fan”, but I am kind of an observer. An old school buddy of mine has worked within the Alaska legislature for the last twenty years or so. He’s a registered Democrat and has worked on projects that allowed him to cross paths with her going back when she was a city commissioner, as the mayor, and as the governor. He told me that the picture painted of her as a mindless ideologue is about 180 degrees off base. He said that over the years, he’d probably dealt with her a couple of dozen times and that her input and/or decisions were always supported by law and not by personal beliefs. The thing he told me about her that really peaked my interest of her was her ability to process information and then to quickly forge a plan with the information she was given. He said she was a living, breathing CPM chart. He said he had seen her on multiple occasions on a variety of subjects instantly absorb input from others and then respond with cogent solutions to problems. He said if you put her in a room with a bunch of people, the chances would be great that she’d be the smartest one in the room. He told me that when he saw her debacle with Katie Couric, his first thought was, “who is that Sarah Palin imposter?” He said that was not the Sarah Palin he had worked with for years. He was sure that the interview was highly edited. It came out later that there was almost six hours of the interview that people didn’t see. He told me that if I really wanted to get a feel of who she is and how she dealt with powerful people, I should read the book, “Sarah Takes On Big Oil”. It was released in October, 2008 and written by two of the state’s top oil & gas editors. The lady they described had no fear to stand toe-to-toe with heavyweights and leave them slinking away with their tales between their legs. She told them that she was the advocate of the citizens of Alaska and there would be no deal making that would adversely affect them. The big boys at Exxon-Mobile and BP folded like a cheap suit. One other thing he told me that still amazes him was how she managed to get people to work together. According to him, she could take two people with opposing opinions, sit down with them, listen to them, offer her solutions, and both guys would leave happy and not feeling that they had compromised their position at all. He laughed at the “she doesn’t read” meme. He said it is well known in the capitol that she was a voracious reader. She truly did read most of the national mags and newspapers, mostly on line, as well as a dozen or so energy trade magazines. According to him, there were stories about how she would take home stacks of papers and reports to prepare for a next-morning meeting and it was as if every word of those reports were stamped into her brain when she sat down at the meeting. He told me not to be fooled by her syntax or her colloquialisms because they were not a fair barometer of her smarts. He said if people would just listen and not try to read between the lines, she was easy to understand. He said he’d love to see her and Obama in a debate about energy or even healthcare. He said she’d clean his clock. He even said that if she were given a day or two to prepare for a debate on foreign affairs, his money would still be on her. He said she was the epitome of a leader. She assembled her staff, listened to their advice, allowed opposing ideas to be heard, and then acted accordingly. As a manager, she advocated making a plan based on the best info available, budgeting the plan, working the plan, measuring results, and quickly adjusting the plan if it was determined it wasn’t working as expected. She believed in the First Law of Holes. He thought her biggest struggles in the 2008 campaign were the product of trying to endorse McCain’s positions on issues. She was able to voice her dissenting opinion on ANWR because her views were known, but on everything else she was expected to toe the McCain line. He said that she lacked the ability to shovel crap and sell it as perfume. He reminded me that anyone who denies the accuracy of her “death panel” metaphor should go back and read her exact words, both her initial FB post and her rebuttal of Obama’s attack on her words. He said “read what she wrote, not what someone wrote or said what she wrote”. Her words in those posts have already been proven to be true. He said that “divisive” is not a word that should be used to describe her. He said that was just a simple use of Alinsky’s rule #13. He said, “look at all the issues. Her position is in line with the majority on virtually all of them”. He told me she wasn’t perfect, but if I read something or heard something that was negative, I should check it out a little closer. He shared a lot more, but I’m afraid I’ve already rambled on for too long. Should she run in 2012? I really don’t know. Would I vote for her? It depends who she’s running against. Will she drive the agenda if she doesn’t run? Yes, for a long time."
