Party Like It's 1994 1980?
— Ace

The New York Times discusses the 12-seat Republican Senate pickup in 1980 (link to Hot Air.)

In 1980, shocked Senate Democrats lost 12 seats in a rout that ended the Congressional careers of such notable lawmakers as George McGovern of South Dakota, Birch Bayh of Indiana, Frank Church of Idaho, Warren Magnuson of Washington and Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin.

...

“It was a very weird time,” recalled Senator Patrick J. Leahy, a Vermont Democrat who narrowly won a second term that year. “A lot of those people had no idea what they were doing.”

While party strategists and analysts say Republicans still face a steep climb to gain the 10 seats needed to flip control of the Senate, polls and circumstances in contests around the country suggest it is not inconceivable that Republicans could seize the majority if crucial races uniformly break their way on Nov. 2.

If they do, it is a certainty that the new membership of the Senate would include sharply conservative Republicans with a deep skepticism of government and a determination to change Washington.

...

Given the prospect of a marked ideological shift in the Senate, some are already asking what the institution would be like upon the arrival of a cadre of fire-breathing conservatives.

Fire-breathing. Okay.

Odd what makes for extreme in the State Media's mind.

I hope we can find some of the sorts of leftist comments I remember seeing in early 2009 about how if the Republicans didn't kowtow to the leftist agenda the Dems would pick up more seats.

11 In other words the Republicans currently holding it to a tie need the MOST CASH to scare the Dems into a cornshit panic. Dump as much $ as possible in Illinois, Nevada, Washington, and California (Fiorina has money but not nearly as much as Johnson in WI, Raese in WV, or McMahon in CT). We have 5 states now looking very, very likely (AR, IN, DE, ND, PA), 1 leaning that way now due to an imploding Bennett (CO). There are 5 races that are truly tossups now (especially since Meek and Rubio are now finally tearing Crist down): WA, WI, CA, NV, IL. CT will probably pop in there too if McMahon keeps hammering and Blummy keeps floundering. FOCUS like hell on these, bring the fight to THESE states.

14 This must be the same NY Slimes that editorialized today about what Osama Obama should do to "fix" the economy. They went on at length about the eeeeeevil Repubs blocking his measures (given the current Dem majority, one wonders how) and the necessity of further taxing the rich and providing more handouts to the protected classes.

I'm sure it was only a shortage of space that kept them from calling for massive reductions in government spending, waste, and failed programs and agencies, right? Same with all the money being shoveled overseas to corrupt governments....

Haven't been over to Tepid Air yet today, ace. Did "Poppin' Fresh" tell us the Slimes got it wrong but, in fairness, maybe they had a point?

17 As a thought exercise, here is what a hard right wing Senate would be working on;

Eliminating the DoE, the DoEd, HUD, CPB.
Rolling back the EPA dramatically.
Taking away large area of legislative territory from the Courts. Impeachment for Holder (over Panthergate and Walpingate).
Rolling back Obamacare and Medicare Plan D.

And that is just for starters...

Unfortunately I'm pretty sure that even if the Republicans retake the Senate it will be pretty squishy, but considering how far left wing it is now, that is the best we can do.

Yeah, voting out their betters like that and replacing them with people who actually read bills before voting for them, read the Constitution, and understand that their job is solely to represent the will of the people and not to feebly attempt to explain that voting against their constituents' will is somehow for the greater good.

Yeah, what were those people thinking? Weird times. Don't these people know that the only way a Senator should be replaced is after they die in office? Even then, replacing them shouldn't involve voting or the will of the people. They should be appointed by their betters in a manner and pace that is consistent with the Democratic need for Senate votes on bills that the people oppose.

But in liberal areas the same people get returned to office as you point out for the rest of their natural lives. And this includes objectively horrible, corrupt people like Byrd or Kennedy,

Here is a US House race we need to concentrate on, if we really want to strike fear & loathing into the democrats & their agenda.  Joel Pollak is the republican candidate in IL-9, the house seat currently held by Jan Schakowsky (D).  Schakowsky is Pelosi's best friend in the House, she is to the left of Lenin.

You may remember Joel Pollak from a couple of years ago, he was the Harvard Law student who stood up at a Q&A with Barney Frank at Harvard, and asked Frank some pointed questions about the financial mess, etc.  He had Frank on the ropes, sputtering and shouting.

Only 52% were wise and thoughtful. The rest were a bunch of bitter, clinging racists. Now that hateful 48% has taken their rabble rousing, hate speech to the Lincoln Memorial other KKK rallies (forgetting that the KKK was a Democrat entity and Dr. King was a Republican) throughout the country and is confusing the wise and thoughtful 52%. No worries though. The MFM will rally against those racist tea baggers and set things right.

Part of the problem is that those bitter clingers can't read and therefore missed the message on all the stimulus-funded road signs. Hmmph! In 2006 and 2007, he tried to fund raise for the GOP and the official Senate campaign committee. "I discovered that people were just so frustrated with the Republicans. I was over there at the Senate committee making fund-raising calls and so many people were saying, 'I'm not giving you guys another dime until you start acting like Republicans.' It jsut struck me as to what this is really all about...

The Media is part of the POLITICAL Class... they are part of the entrenched system...

And this election is all about the disconnect between the Political Class, and the rest of us.

On issue after issue, the polls show the "Political Class"'s beliefs are the opposite of what the rest of us think....

On the Mosque, saw one poll that said 68% of the Pols wanted it, yet 77% of the rest of us did not...

And the Media is PART of the system... and will defend that system because its how they make their living.

Repubs will do OK this election, but the current R leadership will see this election as prooving support for them... when it is not... and will thus try to keep the Political Status quo in tact.

52 by the way, Joel Pollak is having Vivica A Fox at a campaign event on Labor Day.   CAC

I went back to the campaign website and looked at the header, I have no idea who Vivica A. Fox is, but she's headlining the Pollak campaign event on Labor Day at Evanston High School.  Evanston, IL is the center of the universe of suburban Chicago north shore lefty politics.  For students who show up at the event, school supplies will be distributed.  That and Ms. Fox ought to get a good crowd of the younger demo out to the event.

79 We need something strong.....dragons would be great!  Anything with an ounce of passion and a bit of fight.   I'm really sick of seeing all these legislative trainwrecks, gang rapes of the constitution and slaughters of ethics happen while all these bland meallymouths stand around with their hands crossed over their privates.   Like they're more afraid of showing they have no balls than actually losing them.

I hate that we have a majority of weak, vain, self-absorbed cowards in power.  Damn...dragons sound really good.

All they leave is ash and cinders--- easy to sweep the mess out.

The NYT article is (not surprisingly) wrong about the GOP class of 1980; they were actually probably the best Senate freshmen in the last several decades.  They enacted the Reagan tax cuts, ending stagflation; paid for the defense buildup, ending the Cold War; and dropped leftist projects of the Democrat Senate such as gun control, the ERA, and socialized medicine.

The Dems won back the Senate in 1986, not because of the poor quality of GOP Senators, but because (1) a drought in the Midwest caused farmers to vote for Democrats who would give them handouts relief; (2) the Jesse Jackson candidacy in 1984 registered millions of new black voters, who in 1986 voted for southern Democrats who put on enough of a moderate front to also get a large minority of white votes; and (3) Reagan, in an unusual failure of nerve, put freshman Republicans in a bad spot by first supporting cuts in cost-of-living increases for Social Security, and then opposing it after they had voted for it and put themselves on the record.

Vivica A. Fox is very descriptive.

1980 was the year of Iran hostage and Afghanistan, presaging most of our current foreign policy disasters and problems with Islamic holy warriors and theocrats.   The similarities are striking.  Now Iran hopes to hold whole cities hostage.  So that's different.

Sluggish economy, high unemployment, trade deficit, energy crisis...  But then they had high interest rates.

OT but important:  Republican primary candidate for MA-3 has had his home vandalized for a second time

from the press release:

Holliston, MA ...Today, Marty Lamb, ">Republican candidate for Congress in Massachusetts Third District, has filed another police report about vandalism that took place at his home late Saturday night at his home in Holliston.

This time vandals threw broken glass, old books, suit cases, and broken lamps on to the candidate's family lawn along with stealing their campaign signs.

"I am concerned about the escalation of vandalism at my home where I live with my wife and two daughters.  It is one thing to have a political disagreement, but going to a candidate's home is just plain wrong," said Lamb.

During a campaign candidates often see lots of theft of signs.  It is unusual to have people throwing glass and dumping garbage on a candidate's lawn.

Mr. Lamb graduated from the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law at Yeshiva University in 1985 and received his Bachelor of Arts from Hampshire College in 1982. He has an extensive background in real estate law, formerly with Adelson, Golden & Loria, P.C., Edward A. Sokoloff & Associates, and Lamb & Shaffer, P.C. and is currently with Lamb and Browne, P.C. He is a member of the Real Estate Bar Association of Massachusetts. An active participant in community affairs, Mr. Lamb sits on the Board of Directors of New England Region of United Synagogue and is a past president of Temple Beth Torah in Holliston. He has also served on the Holliston Elementary School Council and the Campaign for Holliston Schools. He resides in Holliston with Peri, his wife of 20 years, and his two teenage daughters Elissa and Simma.

I do think that the NYT article has one thing right, however:  this is looking more like 1980, which was a lasting political shift, than like 1994, which was more a reversion to the normal after the left-wing policies of Clinton's first two years.  In 1994, I don't recall huge rallies for conservative politics.  Also, politics does seem to follow a 30-year cycle; i.e., the 1900's, 1930's, 1960's, and 1990's were either somewhat or very liberal, and the 1890's, 1920's, 1950's, and 1980's were either somewhat or very conservative, with the other decades being transitional.

I've said it before, and I'll keep saying it.  The Left ALWAYS goes violent.  In past decades they were too-few to really dare poke their heads up.  Now things are polarizing to the point where radicalization is more extensive.  The worthless fucks have gone too far in this administration, and now that America is rejecting them they'll see they can't win through the democratic process.  That leaves only two things - the courts, and violence.  They'll try the courts first, since that has been effective at destroying the law in the past.  But if that fails, they'll move on to the only other thing they know.

Arm up.  It'll be a hell of a turkey shoot.

139 O/T: Murkowski only winning 54.1% of EARLY votes. The absentee ballots that came in later should favor Miller because his surge came so late in the game. Even if she did win the rest of the outstanding ballots by 54.1%, it probably wouldn't be enough to pull off a win. Murky is toast.

Also, the AK Libertarian Party vice-chairman says “More than likely — 99 percent — there’s no way Murkowski is going to be our nominee. I don’t see that happening, honestly.” And the LP chairman and their Senate nominee are apparently big-time Palin fans. So I don't think Murky will be running under the LP banner anytime soon.

They have no idea what kind of bear they're poking.  If the Right was driven to violence, it would probably be pretty epic.  Conservatives are invariably law-and-order types.  We don't rise up, we don't go around breaking the law, and we don't shoot the neighbors.  But if pushed to that extreme through constant abuse, the hammer would come down pretty hard.  The Leftist orgs had better keep their member lists closely guarded - I'd pay handsomely for those should the civil war break out.

Ah, maybe that's why I don't get the animosity. I don't follow either of those two topics super closely, so most of what I read from him is when people link him bringing the snark, which I deeply enjoy.

156 Someone posted a story about their interactions with ordinary people who seem to be newly "tuned" into politics as of late.

Let me offer you my own anecdotal evidence of the wave that is coming.

I see 1-3 clients everyday.  Some of them have been my clients for years, while others are new clients that I have never had interaction with.

For the past 10 years that I have run my small biz, hardly any of my clients talked about politics.  Sure, you would have the odd person here or there that would spout off some about "X" politician, but this was always by name.

Within the last 4 months, almost every client that I see now has something political to say, and most of these people are fucking angry.

There is a lot of talk about the R's picking up seats, but I really do believe it is more than that.  There is a monster out there, and it has awakened.  And it's hunting for the political class.

181 The fact she's winning the absentee ballots by a comfy margin doesn't concern you?

Posted by: mr magoo at August 29, 2010 02:36 PM (GfGBM)

No, because this isn't all outstanding ballots we're talking about, just the early votes.

There are something like 23,000 ballots outstanding.  Some of the absentee ballots won't be returned at all, a quarter of them or more are Dem, and 10% of the votes cast on election day didn't include any preference for Governor, with some voters opting only to vote on the abortion-parental-notification initiative.

So assuming there are 15,000 outstanding R ballots that are returned on time, accepted, counted, and include a vote for the R Senate candidate (and I think 15,000 is a very generous figure), and Murky wins 54.1% of those ballots, she still comes up 400 votes short.

But she won't win 54.1% of the remaining ballots unless there is some major shenanigans going on.  Remember, the 54.1% number was EARLY votes, not all outstanding ballots.  The votes cast later will favor Miller more heavily, I would assume, since he surged very late.  Also, a significant number of the outstanding ballots in question are ballots that have been challenged, meaning some of them will probably be thrown out (probably cast by inbred mouth-breathers who wrote in "lizard people" or whatever).

The obamacare bill is probably the only one that could be taken apart, as most of the administrative changes have not yet been put into place. People need to keep track of proposed bills that make small modifications to existing acts and laws, as this is the stealth way that the obama team will get around any daylight into their shenanigans.

224 These campaign staffers will never work on a winning campaign, effectively ending their careers in the long run.

Seriously?  I thought some of them were now working on Kirk's Campaign in Illinois.

Obviously "TurningThePage" is an Axelturfer Troll.  Giannoulias is a longtime dem from a mob-connected family, which owned a mob-connected bank named Broadway Bank (which just "failed" a couple of weeks ago, resulting in taxpayers giving the Giannoulis family a couple hundred million bucks.  How convenient for the Giannoulis for Senate campaign.  Hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars.)

Giannoulias and Obama go way back in Illlinois, and neither one of them can be trusted, or would ever vote as a conservative.  There is a greater chance of Saul Alinsky himself coming back from the dead and joining the Tea Party.

Not even close.  Wrong side.

The Mob & unions & democrats & Illinois go hand-in-hand.

You are an Axelturfer Troll - HardToBelieveBut UnfortunatelyTrue, or TurningThePage, or Trounced...Not, or whatever nic you use.

228 Okay.

Then I suppose I can claim that you, Boots, are one of the McCain hangovers working on the Kirk Campaign now.

See what I did there?

Well, Meow, if you were really from Illinois, you would know that nobody nobody nobody on either side of the political fence thinks that Alexi Giannoulis is a closet republican or a conservative or has any right leaning tendancies whatsoever.  You don't have to be a Kirk supporter to know that the Giannoulis family goes way back in democratic politics.

Also Meow, I've been commenting on this blog for a couple of years now, and you are brand new.  Trolls helicopter in, with new & multiple names, write their paid by the word drivel, stay on dead threads in order to get the last word, and generally make a nuisance of themselves.

231 Giannoulias' family is from Greece.  He wasn't born here.  When he wanted to get into politics, the Rs ignored him and Obama befriended him.  Rumor has it--from reliable sources--that his "ideology" hadn't yet developed. And you are right, he is not being accused of being a "closet Republican" though he does believe in acquriing wealth--and NOT paying taxes when it is legal to do so.

However, Kirk IS being accused of being a closet Democrat, and many Republicans--Conservatives especially--believe that his "profile" and voting record support that.  Furthermore, he and his Campaign seems to have an extreme "distaste" for wealth and he is on record stating that Giannoulias "should have found a way to pay taxes".

Kirk's "credibility" and "honesty" have also taken a beating, making it even more difficult for some people to support him now.

And, BTW, "discrediting people"--especially Republicans this way, Boots, is becoming a trademark of the Kirk Campaign.  And I thought "sockpuppets' were common on this blog.
