Photoblogging: Charleston At War?
— Gabriel Malor

It's been ages and ages since we had one of these, but since there's no real news doin' and I'm all out of patience for music videos after yesterday's post, take a look at Charleston, South Carolina:

That's the small size. Definitely click over to SHORPY to see the jumbo size with all it's details.

SHORPY says that what you're looking at is the bombed-out remains of the Cathedral of St. John and St. Finbar after the U.S. shelled Charleston. It's dated 1865, which makes me suspect it was taken after Sherman blew past on his way to burning the shit out of Columbia. At that point, the Confederates had already retreated and surrendered the city.

However, I was a little curious about this because after a bunch of poking around I couldn't find a date to put to the bombing. The Cathedral's history page seems to indicate that what we're looking at is not battle-damage, but fire damage:

On December 11, 1861, a fire broke out in a factory on Hasell Street, destroying much of Charleston including the cathedral. Everything was lost.

Fund-raising for a new cathedral continued for the next 45 years, and the cornerstone for the present Cathedral of St. John the Baptist was laid in January 1890.

So, dear readers, fire damage, battle damage, or both?

You can also take a look at the Cathedral today. It's currently getting a massive face-lift and all-around restoration. Videos, photos, and articles from the restoration are available here.

I certainly prefer Savannah over Charleston. I used to live in Hinesville/Ft. Stewart and we used to love going "Downtown" on the river and do the Pub Crawl. We got good at it. Still try to get back for St. Patty's day.

48 The old lime based mortars don't hold up too well in a fire, and when the roof burns off, that weakened mortar gets more direct exposure to rain and the lime starts leaching out pretty quick...leaving you with not much better than a kinda stiff sand holding everything together.

But you always hear cat owners talking about their new kittens, and dog owners talking about their new puppies all the time.

Savannah claims to have the oldest synagogue in the U.S., and the first golf club.  Same with Charleston.  I give credit to Charleston for the golf club, but the synagogue here is really old and oddly enough, designed as a Catholic church with a nave.  Really weird, but really beautiful.

In 1790, the Touro synagogue's warden, Moses Seixas, wrote to George Washington, expressing his support for Washington's administration and good wishes for him. Washington sent a letter in response, which read in part:

...the Government of the United States...gives to bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance...May the children of the Stock of Abraham, who dwell in this land, continue to merit and enjoy the good will of the other Inhabitants; while every one shall sit in safety under his own vine and figtree, and there shall be none to make him afraid. May the father of all mercies scatter light and not darkness in our paths, and make us all in our several vocations useful here, and in his own due time and way everlastingly happy."

That was when Presidents actually believed in Freedom of (and not from) Religion.

Okay, so where do they come from? Where do baby parrots come from?

144 Found something awesome looking through an old family trunk yesterday.  We've always wondered why my dad's dad was awarded the Croix de Guerre.  Well, my Marine reaches into the trunk and pulls out a small, green booklet, "Officer's Record Book" from WW I.  Inside my grandfather's commander has written him up for "Outstanding courage and ability in handling his platoon of "B" company in the Argonne offensive Nov. 9-10, 1918. Separated from his infantry, without support, while within the enemy lines, he held his platoon together and extricated them with small loss."

My grandfather died in his early forties, and so none of us knew him.  He never once spoke even to my dad about the war.  Even when a newspaper attempted to interview him.

I'm so stunned we found this little booklet.  We were about to allow a cousin to discard the trunk.

A family friend's father died recently and he was kind of like a grandfather to me. I had no idea he'd served in WWII. Well, not quite. He joined the army to fight and they discharged him because of a medical condition within a few months. Boy, was he disappointed, too. He was the only one of his 3 brothers to live past 40 (he died at 90). He looked very handsome in his Army uniform however. In his later years he used to wear a cowboy hat and bolo tie. That's how I always remember him.

195 Some folks who take a side in the war of northern aggression can probably trace their descendants back to Europe during the time of the conflict.

Actually I'm sure they can.  Dad's side, for example, was still in Ireland in the 1860s and didn't come over to Tir n'a 'og until the 1880s.  Mom's side, tho, was spread across the southern Indiana counties on the North, and the northern Kentucky counties in the South.  Brother against brother indeed, or at least cousin against cousin.

My Marine wanted to visit my mom's grave, since she died the week after he arrived at P.I. and he wasn't allowed to attend her funeral.  He got up yesterday morning at the hotel, put on his full dress blues, and we drove to the cemetary, where he stood and saluted my dad's grave, and kissed my mom's headstone.  It was the most moving and beautiful thing I've seen him do.  He wrote to us he wanted to do that before graduation.  Damn, my parents would be (are) so proud!

198 How do your dogs react to twisters, Tommy? We had some thunder and lightning here and the dogs were totally unruffled.

199 Rum, these guys are totally relaxed about the numerous storms we get here (not like Southern California). It's part of their upbringing. We have to get them to come in from the rain. They're so smart to be so stupid.

Naww Tommy, it's gotta be more like "rum, how YOU doin'?"  with a head nod at the same time and a cheesy grin.

201 Ms. Jane, that's so sweet. I know you must be so proud. I can see it everytime youe Marine is mentioned. Was he at Paris Island or Coronado?

Dang, I knew I could count on you for tips. Being the Southern Gentleman I am, maybe I should call her Ms. Rum, ma'm,  from the get go with the extra cheesy grin.

203 Animals have a sixth sense about storms and such.  When my dad retired from the Air Force, he bought some acreage in upstate South Carolina so I could have horses.

One evening we looked out and my palomino was going nuts in the pasture, running like mad.  A few minutes later we had a minor earthquake (tremor).  Oh, and our beagle was whining for a couple of minutes prior as well.

204 I thought Charleston was great, but please smack me upside the head if I ever agree to go down there in July or August ever again.  Good grief, y'all.

205 Tommy, he was at Parris Island.  And yeah, I'm proud.  He's a different (and skinnier) young man.

Ohh, good angle, make sure and work that southern charm in Vegas.

He got up yesterday morning at the hotel, put on his full dress blues, and we drove to the cemetary

The Marine dress uniform is awesome.  Army greens look like.. ugly green suits in comparison.

209 Why, thank you Heather.  He is a good kid and an Eagle Scout to boot.  Damn, I love him.  Now, if Prez Prissypants will just leave the military alone........

210 I had a chubby friend growing up that rebelled against his career Navy Dad by going into the Marines. Oh, man, was his Dad pissed. When he came back, he was ready for combat. Lean, mean, fighting machine. Even impressed his ol' swabby of a Dad. Hardly recognized 'im.

212 Ms. Rum, Ma'm, some people would think Southern Moron would be redundant but I think it's an oxyMoron.

Jane,

Tell your marine to stay safe.  We:ll  keep fighting tyranny at home.

Prayers for all Marines.

218 That Shorpy place gives me the heebee-jeebees. Everyone, I mean almost everyone, in those photos is, well... they're dead. Every little dog and horse is surely decomposing somewhere. Maybe some of the kids are still alive. But seriously, I get sad looking at that place sometimes. Maybe it's just the poverty. Anyone else feel like that?

Well, if that's how you feel you better not watch any movies made before 1940.

220 Thanks for posting the pic. I work not too far from that Cathedral. It's a beautiful place. A lot of time after work I'll take a little bit of food to the cats that live in the graveyard there.

221 If you look at the details in the picture, there are small trees growing in the rubble.  Assuming the picture was taken in 1865, there wouldn't have been enough time for that much growth.  I looked at the picture before I finished reading the post, and couldn't figure out how they had gotten so big so fast.

223 All the "Fuck Sherman" makes me laugh. He was the greatest general this country ever produced in terms of strategy. He is rolling in his grave at what out military has been reduced to in places like Afghanistan, sucking up to the locals who hate us because we are well infidels, and take our money and laugh, then shoot us in the back. Pakistan is the same, in fact the Muslim world in general is the same... The Sherman method of war is correct, total war, something our military did in World War II and last time I checked we did win that war, something we have not done very well since...except perhaps the cold war...but no hot wars...

#226

YES Sherman was a great General, and YES, he was before his time in total war theory and practice.

Just understand there are many in the south who cannot wait to share the experience of rape, plunder, waste, and pillage on you assholes in the north (PS this time we have the guns)

Posted by: Gerry Owen at January 23, 2010 10:19 PM (4Hy88)

225 #227 ??? You assume I live in the north, or that my ancestors, who lived in the Shenandoah valley, fought for the north. You sound just like a Black Nationalist complaining about what the "white man" did to them a long long long time ago....I mean a really long time ago, and cannot wait to rape, pillage, and plunder the "white man's stuff". My take is get over it. Plus there was hardly any cases of rape etc during the campaign, you need to put down those "War of Northern Aggression" books, and look at the facts: (1) Hood ran off to Tennessee to impress a woman, so the army left Georgia defenseless...smooth...great pick for a general Jeff.. (2) Sherman destroyed property...and lots of it, but compared to our carpet bombings of Japan during WWII it was nothing. (3) Sherman actually like southerners, bizarre I know, for example Johnston was a pallbearer at Sherman's funeral. (4) Don't start a war you cannot win...and yes the object of war is to kill people. Plus let us not forget the State of Georgia produced Jimmy Carter...that alone should be enough to get Sherman a pass...at least for Georgia...as for South Carolina...well...read no.4 above.

226 After starting the Civil War at Fort Sumter, Charleston should be thankful that General Sherman did not burn the entire city, turn all of the buildings to dust, and thereafter salt the ground.

Posted by: Bender at January 23, 2010 10:55 PM (802+s)

227 Naw. Sherman wanted to take the city more or less intact. Nobody's sure if the fire was set by Southern troops on the way out of town or if the Northern troops got a little carried away - mebbe one of the fires for a Sherman necktie party got out of control - ...or if it was caused by sumpin' else. At the time, Charleston was a tinderbox. Once the fire started, there was no puttin' it out. Parts of the city burned so hot that nuthin' was left but ash. Parts of the docks(?) and railyards burned until nuthin' was left but twisted metal. Historians - and others - are still arguing about how it started or who may have started it.

228 In 1790, the Touro synagogue's warden, Moses Seixas, wrote to George Washington, expressing his support for Washington's administration and good wishes for him. Washington sent a letter in response, which read in part: ...the Government of the United States...gives to bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance...May the children of the Stock of Abraham, who dwell in this land, continue to merit and enjoy the good will of the other Inhabitants; while every one shall sit in safety under his own vine and figtree, and there shall be none to make him afraid. May the father of all mercies scatter light and not darkness in our paths, and make us all in our several vocations useful here, and in his own due time and way everlastingly happy."" But... but... the progs told me Washington wasn't religious! This sounds like a blessing! Help me, Mr. President!

229 Actually, Charleston had been attacked by federal naval forces at least once before 1865.

And remember the movie "Glory"?  The finale was at a fort on the south end of the bay.  The federals had setup batteries near there that could and did reach the city proper.

As to Sherman, he liked Southerners well enough.  He was the first and founding president of what became Louisiana State University but left to join the Union.  However, he knew that the only way to permanent piece was to change the Southern elites.  I recommend reading his Memoirs - a darn good war story.

As to "charleston really is a nice city....still doesnt beat pittsburgh though lol"

In my book, Pittsburgh is my favorite wurst!

Actually, P'burgh isn't bad at all.
