Hah. No, his point was valid, if pissy. I was late with an update on the basketball pickers.

I was pissy too.

13 I've never understood all the Duke hate. Yea, they have been good for a long time but so has Kentucky and yet no one hates Kentucky quite like they hate Duke. In fact during their highest point I would take Coach K as a better human being than Pitino any day. As far as I know Coack K never cheated on his wife and then paid for his mistress to get an abortion.

I'm sorry.  I was thinking of Pete Marovich.

16 Truck Monkey, the Mountaineers have their work cut out for them with Truck Bryant out of the game. But DaÂ’Sean Butler, Kevin Jones and Devin Ebanks make up a terrific trio of forwards.

We hate Duke because of the cocksuckers in the faculty there. There are probably as many cocksuckers in most of academia, but the Duke eighty (or whatever the hell they called themselves) were particularly egregious.

Go Baylor Baptist Bears--kick some Blue Devil ass.

Posted by: nikkolai at March 27, 2010 06:51 AM (U0lNn)

20 You gotta' give the Boilers credit.  They hung tough last night, but losing Hummel really killed their offense.

Posted by: Y-not at March 27, 2010 06:52 AM (Kn9r7)

21 However, Kentucky is a good team but a little immature. A switch up in the Mountaineers game might throw them for a loop. West Virginia has a good coach in Bob Huggins. They've hopefully improved since playing Washington.

Posted by: Tattoo De Plane at March 27, 2010 06:57 AM (mHQ7T)

22 Kentucky will beat WVU,but I see them going no farther than today. I say this as a Kentucky fan, also.

Posted by: The Drizzle at March 27, 2010 07:00 AM (DZgJg)

23 I'm rooting for WVU because a.  Huggins is awesome and b.  it's the only hope for any of my brackets not to completely go to hell.

Posted by: alexthechick at March 27, 2010 07:03 AM (tNr7w)

24 So... this is basketball, right?  Or is it football?  Well, whatever.  I'm rooting for the team with the... thing.  You know, that thing with the guy.  I'll think of it in a minute.

Posted by: Cautiously Pessimistic at March 27, 2010 07:09 AM (pZEar)

25 If  Pure Concentrated Evil wins this weekend, I vault from 73rd to 42nd. If Almost Heaven does likewise, I end the weekend in 22nd.

And if Evil goes all the way, I finish somewhere between 3rd and 6th.

Meanwhile, there's six Kansas zombies clogging up the top ten with nowhere to go but down, and 48 dead men in the top 72.

Am I crazy, or do the points escalate too fast as you go up the bracket? It all hinges on your champion pick, and the first four rounds are one long, almost-meaningless tiebreaker.

I wouldn't prefer a simple one point per win, but the redoubling in each round is too much. Maybe 1-2-3-4-8-12? Keeps things more exciting.

27 Duke hate? I never cared that much, but when I spent some time in Chapel Hill, I wound up skating for UNC against Duke in a summer club league... scored 2 goals and had an assist before I realized everyone else was more concerned with... er... other aspects of the game, shall we say? Of course, that was hockey...

Well, got nothing to do here in KS until the game comes on. Trouble is it's gray and rainy here. It was also gray (and snowy) last Sat. when KU lost, so that may portend K States chances.

Speaking of the rain. Has there been any dust-storms anywhere that anyone is aware of? For some reason the rain seems to have dirt in it. My car was some-what muddy, and I just noticed that my out-door chairs have muddy water on them. And the pool cover now has the same.

Weird...

--I still can't stand Duke (full disclosure: Maryland alum here) but never had the hate for Coach K.  Still, like many legacy BCS teams, they get pimped every year coasting on reputation.  For example they did not deserve the #1 seed this year.

33 Fugatabout Patino (who is a sleeze). What about John Calipari?? He's a total dirtbag. You don't hear these things about Coach K. Despite how much people have hatred (irrational?) of Duke, they run a clean program. Can't say the same about how Calipari ran Memphis.

Posted by: laceyunderalls at March 27, 2010 07:33 AM (CnCRW)

34 15 I've never understood all the Duke hate. Yea, they have been good for a long time but so has Kentucky and yet no one hates Kentucky quite like they hate Duke.

I'll have to say Duke kids are great.  But, the professors all think they should be at Harvard, or that they are at Harvard and it's been renamed Duke and has a basketball team.

Dukies have an attitude, that's for sure.  Duke costs about $45,000 a year vs UNC, $6,000.

I never realized how small Duke is until son went there. Only about 6,000 undergrads.  60% are in Frats or Sororities.  Since 20-30% are foreign students, that means most all the kids party.  Compare that to UNC, 30,000 students, over half female, and most of the males think they are too, aka, they're gay.  Dukies love UNC girls, although talking to a brick is a little hard.

I don't know how Coach K recruits.  There are not many easy classes and some of the professors are openly anti-jock, aka the "88".

You might notice something else about the Duke team, I can't seem to put my figure on it, but they can jump!

My loathing of Duke goes back to the days of Dean Smith coaching at UNC and Krsysnki**  (whatever) coaching at Dook. K's minions were always inciting some kind of trash talk about UNC or its players.  No class.  Duke may not be pure evil, but they do sorta turn my stomach.

My loathingof UK goes back to the days of Adolph Rupp coaching there (before the days of NCAA recruiting rules), and goes through the days of various other coaches  (especially liked the tournament that Georgetown, led  by Patrick Ewing, dismantled UK). Everything about the UK basketball program smells of payoffs and being elitist, from the "Basketball Lodge" where the players live to all the other perks involved.  A lot of programs do the same sort of things, but UK basketball is praised in Kentucky for that sort of thing..

Smell. Bad.

PS. John Wall is a very talented athlete, but is not ready for the NBA.

Joe B. Hall after his team lost to Georgetown (1984?): "I slept like a baby... I cried all night."    Weiner.

Eddie Sutton: Crooked recruiter

Pitino: cheated on his wife

Tubby Smith: Nice guy they ran out of town. Figures.

Calipari: Crooked like Sutton.

Adolph Rupp used to recruit all the good basketball players in Kentucky (back in the '50's) , so sometimes he had 25  scholarship athletes on the team, to prevent competition in state.

The Baron.  Crooked.

Pattern to all this?  It's UK basketball!

47 Tried to tell y'all Baylor was underrated.

Yes a 3 beating up a 10 is a huge upset.  I know, I know, St. Mary's was underseeded, but they were hyped up too.  Btw, did anyone see the pic of Omar Samhan that yahoo sports had up yesterday next to the game link?  They used one where he looked like Cartman in the epi where he gets into the special Olympics (and I'm not exaggerating).

I'm actually kinda torn about Duke; I hate the faculty (and c'mon it's Duke), but kinda rooting for them in honor of the Lacrosse team, and I like Coach K.

No more Pac-10 or St. Mary's, what to do, what to do.  Drink?  Ah....

50 Really, blaming the Duke ATHLETES for the Group of 88 douchebags? See, the 88 hated the athletes precisely because they were athletes - and white. It was as blatant a case of racism and classism as you will ever see. But it was the acceptable - no, even better, ENCOURAGED - kind of racism and classism. It was against mostly white and supposedly rich 19-22 year old males.

So you are going to hate on the Duke athletes because of the Group of 88 that are notorious left (and commie-level left) asshats ALSO hate the Duke athletes?

Yeah, that makes sense.

Posted by: Beta Phi at March 27, 2010 10:43 AM (fRnux)

51 48.  Pitino cheated on his wife while coach of Louisville.

Smith was a nice guy who left on his own because he did not want the pressure associated with UK basketball.  He went to Minnesota and had the same sort of success he had at UK, which is fine for them, but not for UK.  Again, he left on his own.

Calipari is crooked like Sutton?  Really?  When did Calipari ship cash by Emery?  So, relying on the NCAA to clear a player, which they did, and playing that player, then having the NCAA declare the player ineligible, is Calipari's fault?  A player takes money from an agent and the Calipari is found to not know about the exchange by the NCAA and he is responsible? If you actually had the intelligence to read and understand what happened at UMass and Memphis, you would see that Calipari was not found guilty of any violations by the NCAA.

The drivel you list about Rupp sounds remarkably similar to what Bear Bryant did at Alabama.  Rule 15.5.9.1 of the NCAA rulebook says that a multi-sport participant who plays football must count toward the football scholarship limit.
Rule 15.5.9.1: In football, a counter who was recruited and/or offered financial aid to participate in football and who participates (practices or competes) in football and one or more sports (including basketball) shall be counted in football. A counter who was not recruited and/or offered financial aid to participate in football and who competes in football and one or more sports (including basketball) shall be counted infootball. (Revised: 1/10/95 effective 8/1/95, 1/9/96 effective 8/1/96)
