— Gabriel Malor Yeah, it's a little early in the day to be stealing from Hot Air, but I think Ed missed the real jaw-dropping part of this story:
Today, an American newspaper breaks news of yet another scandal involving AGW scientists and e-mail — but this time here in the US. The Washington Times obtained e-mails sent through the National Academy of Sciences that show AGW scientists conspiring to attack critics:
Undaunted by a rash of scandals over the science underpinning climate change, top climate researchers are plotting to respond with what one scientist involved said needs to be “an outlandishly aggressively partisan approach” to gut the credibility of skeptics. In private e-mails obtained by The Washington Times, climate scientists at the National Academy of Sciences say they are tired of “being treated like political pawns” and need to fight back in kind. Their strategy includes forming a nonprofit group to organize researchers and use their donations to challenge critics by running a back-page ad in the New York Times.
“Most of our colleagues don’t seem to grasp that we’re not in a gentlepersons’ debate, we’re in a street fight against well-funded, merciless enemies who play by entirely different rules,” Paul R. Ehrlich, a Stanford University researcher, said in one of the e-mails.
Perhaps the scientists should concentrate more on science than advocacy. In fact, that was the conclusion of several people in the e-mail chain, warning against getting into a big public-relations battle when the supposedly “settled science” of the IPCC has all but utterly collapsed. Even if one is inclined to the most paranoid possible perspective on the meltdown, a $50,000 back-page ad in the New York Times will hardly offset all of the negative publicity that AGW scientists have managed to create on their own.
Click over for Ed's well-taken points about the retarded PR approach being suggested and the lack of anything that can be termed "science" from these fellows.
But then come back here and recall with me that Paul Ehrlich is one of the most discredited pseudo-scientific alarmists of all time. In 1968 he predicted that population growth would exceed the resources available on the planet, resulting in decades of famine and disease. He conned universities and governments into thinking that hundreds of millions of people would die by the 1980s.
His error, though he refuses to this day to admit it, was failing to consider such obvious things as: (1) more people means more land being farmed, not less; (2) improvements in farming techniques; (3) people (outside of academe, I mean) don't just sit around and wait to starve; and (4) the market regulates scarcity far better than idiot pseudoscientists expect.
So that's the guy? That's the guy giving advice to the global warming alarmists?!? Awesome.

There's one caveman. He does all the hunting, gathering, shelter building, etc.
There's 10 cavemen. They all have a job or two, more gets done. There's progress.
There's 50 cavemen. The hunting, gathering, shelters, clothing, tool making are all taken care of. A few older cavemen now have the luxury of leisure. They become story tellers and bullshitters.
When you get up to around 3 billion cavemen you get assholes like Paul Ehrlich.

These guys are making it clearer and clearer everyday that the entire scam from the "scientists" point of view is an effort to obtain as much grant money as possible.
The libs then go out and attack the insurance industry and the oil industry and the weapons industry and the energy industry et al while those industries at least provide either a service or a product.
These "scientists" are peddling fear and taking in huge amounts of money to produce nothing but fear and socialism. Talk about GREED. Wall street are pikers compared to these dicks.

The sea level has gone up 300 feet, and down 300 feet from today. Temperatures have been a lot higher and a lot lower. CO2 has been up to 20 times higher than today. The ice capes have formed and disappeared. The current 100,000 year ice age cycles started about 3 million years ago when the Ithumus of Panama was blocked by plate tectonics completely blocking the gap.
Change is natural and will continue regardless what man does.... You don't think we can stop the plates from banging into each other.

Obama to the UN:
The danger posed by climate change cannot be denied. Our responsibility to meet it must not be deferred. If we continue down our current course, every member of this Assembly will see irreversible changes within their borders. Our efforts to end conflicts will be eclipsed by wars over refugees and resources. Development will be devastated by drought and famine. Land that human beings have lived on for millennia will disappear. And those wealthy nations that did so much damage to the environment in the 20th century must accept our obligation to lead. But responsibility does not end there.
I still want to know what land inhabited for millennia is going to disappear?

WTF?
The fact that they would take such an approach proves that their ideas are bunk. That is one step DOWN from the nutters who have websites claiming to have invented perpetual motion machines.
Legitimate research gets published in legitimate journals. Not all the journals are equally prestigious, but even the least prominent does have standards.
For someone to take out a paid ad in a newspaper means that they have no interest in the truth. If their findings cannot withstand peer review, then those findings are invalid. Desperately trying to convince laypeople that the findings are true doesn't make them so.
The truth does not have an agenda. What is, is.

The god of AGW is dead. It killed itself by overdosing on vanity. Now all of its acolytes are following in its footsteps.
It's sad. People who once had credibility are pissing it away. For many they had sacrificed years to earn their credibility and their positions but because of their vanity and their belief that they deserved to influence how little people should behave, they gouged their own eyes out.
Poor Rick can't accept the fact that his god and his heroes are finished.

Well, it certainly would be important to understanding the planet, past, present, and future. But I think Biology would be a weak background when climatology would require many branches of specialists to study. From physics to chemistry. Paleontology also. It would warrant being a specific field of study, but without a political agenda to push.

Oh and one of the things that bothers me about the "climate experts" is how little they seem to take into account that great big gassy ball in the sky and its effects on our planet.
The thing is we could all go back to living in caves and yet factors out of our control (meteor anyone) would still make us their bitch.

When Borlaug died and I posted Iowahawk's tribute to my Facebook, O-voting AGW-believing idiots informed me Borlaug was evil for "promoting overpopulation" with "chemicals" (outright lie, he created hybrids)--it would have been better if he and his employers had let billions of brown people starve to death instead of employing science to let them live.
Years ago I had to take a "Critical Thinking" class to fill a checkmark for my UC coursework. The introduction to one of Erlich's population books was assigned reading, and there was a passage where he described walking through the streets of Bombay with tens of thousands of "brown faces" looking at him. He claimed this experience as one of the primary motivators for his population work.
Brown faces.
The class was not amused when I pointed out the rather obvious racist animus.

There is information out there about the indoctrination that is happending in Universities. Maybe that will get her to second guess how correct she is. If she starts second guessing, then she might be more open to listening to you, especially if you can take specific topics, and clamly back them up with hard evidence.

Yes, but the Indian cried beautifully on cue now, didn't he? I can still picture him standing by the side of the road, one tear sliding down his face as he surveyed the once majestic beauty of the land covered in garbage.
Interestingly, I do believe that a campaign to stop littering was a good idea and also effective. At least the 70s campaign was. My problem with the current movement is the absolute overkill on the subject and the ridiculous ideas for "saving the planet."
I'm also bothered by how much they are indoctrinating the kids about it. And how the slogan is no "Reduce, Re-use, Recycle, Re-Think." Re-think indeed.

Actually, yes. She had a nervous breakdown a few years ago now, and quit her job. She was diagnosed as manic depressive, and is on more medication than my 96-year-old Grandmother. She has become a cat lady, taking in 35 cats that she refuses to take care of (she leaves that and everything else to me). She was actually supposed to adopt them out, but that requires effort on her part...too bad there.
She barely gets out of bed to even feed herself, and is like this all the time. Her attitude is alright, but she's just lazy; doesn't want to do shit. Expects me to do everything. She wasn't always like this... Her independence and work ethic actually attracted me to her at first. After her semester at college, she changed and became completely dependent on me for everything.
She is "sick", so I can't really abandon her. I feel guilty about resenting her, but she's damn hard to take care of. I'm still fairly young, and don't need this shit in my life! She actually threatened to kill herself if I ever leave her... Gah...

I get to be the bad guy because I've stopped going along with all their horseshit. It's not a fun place to be. Just remember that you don't have to feel what she wants you to feel, or do what she wants you to do -- it's your choice, and you can choose "against" her if you wish. I won't lie; the backlash is gonna suck. But if you can ride it out you'll feel better in the long run.

Don't know about that. I think the modern Malthusians are just the "let's find an excuse" brigade of the early 20th century Progressives. All the same tics are there -- the compulsive bowing and scraping to "science", the assertions that freedom Just Doesn't Work, the absolute belief in their own morality... Plus, all the "problems" they find have the same solution -- government planning, directed by the intelligentsia/nomenklatura.
Ehrlich's "population bomb" was just another try at eugenics -- it wasn't an accident he was freaked out by all those "brown faces".
Carson's "silent spring" was just another try for industrial planning.
It's no accident that the loudest preachers for "smaller, poorer, simpler" lives spend their life in luxury, jetting around the world to lecture people on how much the rest of us are wasting things. The greatest threat to the powerful is liberty, and they're determined to get rid of it.

Yep, I vacuum weekly with a Shop Vac. I clean all 25 litter boxes every weekend; takes about 5 hours. All while she lies on the couch doing nothing. I don't have time to clean daily, as I work 40 hours per week while she does nothing. Let her stay at home laying in filth; she doesn't seem to mind.
I want to start going with her to her counseling sessions. So far, her therapist doesn't think "it's time yet"... God knows when it will be "time".
And believe it or not, she's on the best combination of medication that she's tried yet. She's not really depressed at all now, and acts pretty much like she always did. It's just her motivation that's totally gone. She doesn't seem to care about anything or have any ambition. I'm questioning if she ever had any to begin with.

Dude, You tell him that you want to be a part of it, or you changing Counselors. He just saying that, because he is just bleeding you guys for money. Demand results or go to new people. There are places on the web, where you can find reviews of these people. Just keep going to different ones until you start getting results. If you not a part of it, the counselor isn't going to be able understand the dynamic at home, and he doesn't understand that there is no way anything is going to get accomplished.

Two suggestions when burning them. First, do it at night. The smoke is really thick and black and this way the local EPA won't be able to track you down. Second, have leather gloves and a couple pitchforks ready for clean up. The leftover steel cords are a real bitch to handle.

Ok, as a former animal shelter employee and cruelty inspector -- Pyrocles, you have to contact a cat rescue or shelter, tell them what's up, and that you need help re-homing at least some of those cats.
A sane animal inspector will work with you (just be careful, a lot of them are leftist nuts anymore) -- that many cats in one house is unhealthy for you and unhealthy for the cats, even unhealthy for future occupants of the house; especially if they aren't being taken care of during the day by her. That's not fair to the cats -- in a sense they are like children in that they depend upon the people to take care of them, which they aren't really getting (that said: are you sure you want kids with this? She's likely to treat a baby as badly as the cats...or worse; seriously, think about it). What kind of life do you think they are leading right now?
You have to get that number down to a reasonable level (which sounds to me like no more than two). If she pitches a fit, frak it -- you are responsible for those animals, so take care of them, get them out of there.
And it makes a very strong case against her -- my advice would be to secrete away a stash and find a lawyer...at some point you do have to look out for yourself. Sounds to me like she has more issues with control than depression -- and possibly has some addictive and abusive issues as well (as in she's an abuser).

With all the bullshit "do-gooder" causes out there, it's one I can totally support. Of course, like with so many others, donations and proceeds often go to a select few to be doled out among lobbyists, partners, lawyers, honchos, etc. and the little guy takes the feathered shaft.

Ehrlich was wrong. Spectacularly wrong. And as many have noted his opinion, if not publicly ignored, should be considered as a negative for whatever cause he signs on to. He should not be teaching and should be considered a public disgrace.
In fairness though - no one pays the kind of price they should.
This creates an odd dynamic though. If you make a claim that falls within respectable conventional wisdom, you get little to no credit for it if it comes true and pay essentially no price if it is wrong. If you make a rather unlikely claim that proves true, you get major credit, irrespective of whether you had any basis for the claim. Conversely you pay no price again if wrong.
So the only way to get credit with the public is to make extreme claims and hope one comes true more or less. Which pushes people in this direction.

I know this is turning into Moron Intervention Day, but the girl I was dating prior to finding my wife was also clinically mentally ill. Depression is one thing, but the description you give sounds remarkably closer to full-blown psychosis, perhaps schizophrenia. I think Unknown Jane's advice is pretty sound- get those cats out of there; you can't help them- and the bottom line is that your wife isn't going to get healthier anytime soon.
Rebalancing the endocrine system (to say nothing of brain chemicals; I haven't had a psychiatry rotation yet) can take a very long time, and behavioral modifications take even longer.
If I may offer this: you need a lawyer, qucikly; a new psychiatrist for the wife (and I mean an MD or DO- someone who can prescribe medication or hospitalization); and to seriously contemplate pulling the eject handle on your marriage.
I know it isn't pleasant to contemplate, but, bro, I've been there; just not with a ring on my finger. Make this happen- for both of you.

Obviously, you're getting a plethora of advice on this, so take this bit of input for what it's worth (probably little):
Given the situation that you've described, if I was in your situation, I'd get the hell out as fast as possible. From my perspective, it sounds to me like you have a parasite on your hands instead of a wife. People like that are going to do nothing but drain you and drain you and drain you until there's nothing left and you end up in the grave. The suicide threat is just a manifestation of that; she's knows the minute you leave she's hosed, so she's manipulating your emotions to keep you from leaving.
Don't feel guilty for resenting her. You have every right to be resentful. She's not pulling her weight in the marraige.
I don't believe, based on what you've said, that anything you try will end up changing her. People like that have to hit rock bottom before they change, if it even happens at all. But you are not responsible for her well-being. She's a grown woman and needs to take care of that herself.
Get out. She's either going to straighten herself out, or she's going to end up like the people you see on that show Hoarders, but I think you need to wipe your hands of the situation and cut off all contact with her before it literally kills you.

Here's the full story.
The division of the human family into its two distinct branches occurred some 10,000 years ago, when humans coexisted as members of small bands of nomadic hunter/gatherers.
In the pivotal event of societal evolution, beer was invented. This epochal innovation was both the foundation of modern civilization and the occasion of the great bifurcation of humanity into its two distinct subgroups: Liberals and Conservatives.
Once beer was discovered, it required grain, and that was the beginning of agriculture. Neither the glass bottle or aluminum can had yet been invented, so it was necessary to stick pretty close to the brewery. That's how villages were formed.
Some men spent their days killing animals to barbecue at night while they were drinking beer. This was the beginning of the conservative movement.
Other men who were weaker and less skilled at hunting, learned how to live off conservatives by showing up for the BBQs every night and doing women's work like sewing, fetching and hair dressing. This was the beginning of the liberal movement. Later, some of the liberals actually became women.
Liberal achievements include the domestication of cats, invention of group therapy and democratic voting to see how to divide the beer and meat that the conservatives provided. Women were not interested in democracy at that time because most of them were still women back then, and the conservatives fed them.
Conservatives are symbolized by the largest, most powerful land animal on earth. Liberals are symbolized by the jackass.
Modern Liberals like imported beer (they add lime), but most prefer white wine or foreign water in a bottle. They eat raw fish but like their beef well done. Sushi, tofu, and French food are on liberal menus. Their women have more testosterone than the men. Liberals like deviant sex and want others to like it too. Their first successful city governments were Sodom and Gomorra.
Most social workers, personal injury attorneys, journalists, and group therapists are Liberals. Liberals invented the designated hitter rule in baseball because it wasn't "fair" to make the pitcher also bat.
Conservatives drink domestic beer. They eat red meat, and still provide for their women. Conservatives are big-game hunters, rodeo cowboys, lumber jacks, construction workers, medical doctors, police officers, corporate executives, soldiers, athletes, and generally anyone who works productively outside government. Conservatives who own companies hire other conservatives who want to work for a living.
Liberals do not produce anything. They like to "govern" the producers and decide what is to be done with the production. Liberals believe Europeans are more enlightened than Americans. That is why most of the liberals just stayed in Europe when conservatives were coming to America.
Conservatives have principles, believe in a Creator, and the rule of law. They practice charity and give to the poor, normally through their churches. When in doubt on an issue, they check both the Bible and the Constitution, which they use as a constant reference in a changing world. They believe in the concept of truth.
Liberals do not have principles, except for their dedication to stealing production of conservatives and undermining principled references such as the Bible and Constitution. They are never in doubt on an issue because they always do whatever is best for them without regard to others. They have no standard of reference.
Liberals do not give to charity. They cultivate the poor like a cat cultivates a field of mice. They use the poor as voters and give them a portion of stolen tax money which they vote away from conservatives.
Conservatives believe in self defense, both at home and abroad. They own guns and use them to discourage liberals and other common criminals. They provide guns to the armed forces to discourage foreign liberals and other foreign criminals.
Liberals do not believe in conservative self defense. They disarm conservatives, and then attack them with impunity by liberal armies with guns. King George, Hitler and Stalin were all liberals who abandoned the rule of Law, had no principles except their own self indulgence, and attempted to tax and govern conservatives. Liberals believe in BIG government. They think the United Nations is the ultimate answer.
Conservatives believe in the rule of law and when sitting on juries, convict common criminals and acquit fellow conservatives who have been charged by liberals. When serving in the armed forces, they shoot liberals from other countries who want to govern our country.
Liberals only believe in whatever laws are appealing to them, such as the privilege of making a living by taxing conservatives. When sitting on juries, liberals convict producers and acquit liberals and other common criminals. Modern Judges are all liberals as they do not produce anything except chaos, and are paid with confiscated tax money. They consider it against the law to reference any source of law such as the Bible or Constitution. Like other liberals, they just make it up as they go and do what is best for them.
The American cowboy, of course, is your basic, full-bore Conservative. A hundred years ago, an Englishman visiting Texas was attempting to find the owner of a huge cattle ranch. He rode up to one of the ranch hands, and inquired, "Pardon me, but could you perhaps tell me where I might locate your master?" To which the cowboy replied, "That sumbitch ain't been born yet".

And believe it or not, she's on the best combination of medication that she's tried yet. She's not really depressed at all now, and acts pretty much like she always did. It's just her motivation that's totally gone. She doesn't seem to care about anything or have any ambition. I'm questioning if she ever had any to begin with.

The poster who said get rid of most of the cats is right. Having that many cats in a house is cruel and unhealthy. I'm surprised no one has turned her in for animal cruelty or for breaking the law. Most cities/townships have laws governing the number of animals you may keep. A person would be required to have a special breeder's license and have a much different habitat. You may need to call the SPCA or Humane Society yourself and help those animals. You're living with an animal hoarder and it is one of the most difficult mental health issues to deal with.

292 Be nice! Actually, they would be remanded to the ASPCA most likely; with the current economy and that concentration of animals in a small space under questionable circumstances (primary caretaker is unable to fully provide for them and they are left with the abusive party for most of the day) probably a number of them would be put down, but some could potentially find homes, and if Pyrocles here wants to keep some of them he would probably be allowed to. A lot better for the poor damn cats than shooting them all.
Just remember: people who do this to animals will often do it to their children.

330 Actually, it's the Humane Society that you have to watch out for; the ASPCA is still holding out as far as the animal rights' crap. That's the reason they don't get as much funding and are losing influence. From my experience the SPCA folks usually try to work with people and save animals...HSUS is inflitrated with PETA and they are far more likely to run people into court, confiscate animals, and ultimately euthanize them without really trying to adopt them out. They're bastiges.
And now you've got me working up to a big old long post on what's wrong with the pet situation today...don't say I didn't warn you!

Yeah. When life was scarce, life was cheap. And when it was scarcer, it was cheaper. And now that it's plentiful, it's very dear.
And population growth is not a problem anymore. The population is projected to start declining in this century. I wonder why hidebound conservatives know this and forward-thinking lefties don't.

When I was a kid we used to chase the DDT fogger truck on our bikes. We thought riding around in the fog was cool.
Remember 'The Godfather"? I was watching it years ago with my sister. In the scene where he has the heart attack? He's spraying the plants. My sister turned to me and said "Hey, remember when we used to do that. Back in Upstate NY"?
I went "Yeah, why do you ask"?
She went "It was DDT."
Can't say as I've had any long lasting reactions from doing that, considering I was about 6hrs old at the time.

Whatever happened to that cult de-programming shit? That would come in handy for me, because other than being a moonbat, my old lady is actually kind of okay. But moonbattery doth pervade all aspects of married life, and I do mean ALL, IYKWIMAITYD.

Pyrocles @ 308 -- don't just balls it out and leave. That is a mistake and you will get screwed. Have a plan.
That, I agree with. Sort of. If you do plan to get a divorce, my thinking is that you (having finally decided) and your divorce attorney should be aware of this at least a few months before your wife is.
In legal terms, screw her on everything you can. Cheat her anyway you can.
If you do not wish to be immoral, don't. You can GIVE her however much cash you please out of the goodness of your heart and the burden of fair dealing. You can uncheat her later, but you can't uncheat yourself.
It's like cutting your hair - you can always cut more off and go shorter. You can't really glue it back on.
Step 1 is to put yourself in a position where you get by law (or by successful cheating of law) as much as you possibly can get, deserved or not.
Step 2, satisfying moral obligations and deciding who deserves what, is very easy once you have everything free and clear. If she deserves half your house and it's the 'right thing', then give her half your house after the court has given you all of it. Do not give her a blank check court judgement about the house that might hand her the whole thing and naively expect a court of law to deliver justice.
Seek counseling to save a marriage, by all means, I support that and generally oppose divorce. But if it comes to divorce, or just in case it does come to divorce, don't use ultimatums about divorce. Don't let on your leaving until after you've burried the krugerands.
You can always dig them up afterward and give her half if you feel guilty. It's much harder to break in and steal half if you feel like a victimized shmuck.

Explain the generally higher levels of social barbarism when population levels were much smaller a few thousand years ago.
That depends very much on which societies you compare. I can point to lots of densely populated places, even in America, that can be pretty barbaric, and lots of historic places that weren't so much.

I made this argument on David Thompson's blog "Culture, Ideas, and Comic Books" in a comment to a 25-Oct.-2009 post "Culling for Gaia", and addressed most of the objections you'all raise in this thread, so I won't impose on Ace for the space. The one objection for which I do not have a good, simple answer is The Chicken's, in #339. My thoughts on that look ad hoc and incomplete to me, so I'll have to think on it.
Please do read Garett Hardin's essay "The Tragedy of the Commons". It's on the web.

Why is social barbarism tied to population density?
It's not.
Someone's drawing a half-assed correlation. The past was generally more barbarous, and generally less populous. QED.
Except, notsomuch.

Indoctrination is forcing people to accept something. Nobody made you watch the commercial. You could have gone and gotten a bowl of Life like Mikey said instead. The commercial would have been over by the time you got back.
And yeah I'm a Conservative. If running a few commercials, inconveniencing the various Joe Sensitives out there who can't seem to watch a commercial without it causing life long trauma, can save having to create a town, state or federal bureaucracy, with the taxes and laws that go with it, to deal with the problem then yeah I'm for it. And I would call that Conservative.
If DC suddenly had a collective brain fart and not only withdrew the laws banning handguns but actually encouraged people to buy them and defend themselves, showing a poor mother whose baby just got shot in a drive by crying, would you call that indoctrination? Are Army recruitment commercials appealing to you sense of duty indoctrination?
You probably think Smokey the Bear is the Antichrist or something.
You watched a commercial, you felt guilty, so it's bad. I don't remember reading in the Constitution the part that says you have a right not to have your feelings manipulated.
You don't have to buy into the entire Green revolution to agree that people who litter are scumbags and they should feel guilty.
I hope I am not judged by the company I keep. You are around here too.

Don't know if anyone's posted these yet - from wikipedia. One says a lot about Dr. Borlaug, the other is just funny:
“In 1968, Borlaug received what he considered an especially satisfying tribute when the people of Ciudad Obregón, where some of his earliest experiments were undertaken, named a street after him.”
“Borlaug was also featured in an episode of Penn & Teller: Bullshit!, where he was referred to as the "Greatest Human Being That Ever Lived". In that episode, Penn & Teller play a card game where each card depicts a great person in history. Each player picks a few cards at random, and bets on whether one thinks one's card shows a greater person than the other players' cards based on a characterization such as humanitarianism or scientific achievement. Penn gets Norman Borlaug, and proceeds to bet all his chips, his house, his rings, his watch, and essentially everything he's ever owned. He wins because, as he says, "Norman is the greatest human being, and you've probably never heard of him." In the episode — the topic of which was genetically altered food — he is credited with saving the lives of over a billion people.” (Emphasis added.)
The latter, by the way, is why Leftist hate him. They reserve admiration for someone who kills millions of people.
