So I will rewrite that after I get a decent signal and can watch the video.

Christine was just on with Laura Ingraham and they laughed it off.
There is no way Laura Ingraham would side with Christine if she thought Christine was a dummy -- especially on the content of the Constitution. Laura is on the team, but she's also intellectually honest and she takes the Constitution seriously and Laura does not suffer fools gladly.

It starts with
O'Donnell: Where in the Constitution is the separation of church and state?
{crowd gasps and laughs}
Coons: It's in the First Amendment... no an excellent ques...
{interrupted by moderator to silence the laughing crowd}
Then later...
Coons: The First Amendment establishes the separation, the fact that the federal government shall not establish a religion, and decisional law by the Supreme Court over many many decades...
O'Donnell: The First Amendment does?
Coons: ...clarifies and enshrines that there is a separation of church and state that our courts and our laws must respect...
O'Donnell: So you're telling me that the separation of church and state... the phrase "the separation of church and state" is in the First Amendment?
Then it jumps to the part I already transcribed.

It all depends on what "that" refers to. The interuption in the transcript makes it appear that COD is responding to Coons statement (which in itself is inaccurate as far as what the First Amendment actually says) when she could be refering back to her own question. Either way she's correct. Niether the preposition she poses in her question nor that posed by coons in his statement are in the First Amendment.

Levin had it all last night.
To answer, she says both things.
But she is repeating herself over Coons talking, and Coons got the establishment clause (misquoted) in while she was trying to talk over him, so she says "you are saying that is in the First Amendment" (I put quotes around it but am speaking from memory) after he said that, but clealy she is repeating what she had said earlier to the separation of church and state, not responding to the establishment clause. Even so, Coons had what the First Amendment says wrong, anyway.

48 Mega Independent,
That's what I heard at 6:34 of the exchange, she used the term "phrase separation of church and state"...The exchange at 7:30 is a continuation of that since she was talking over Coons at 6:34 but I think had she repeated exactly what she said at 6:34, it would have been much less clumsy. It appears to me she knew exactly what the 1st amendment is about and that she simply didn't properly repeat herself.

Okay, so Ben Jealous would call my use of "pimping" RACIST. Fuck him.
Lots of assertions, lots of accusations, virtually free of facts. One sign at a Tea Party event is used as "proof" of racism. Lots of charts showing how the eeeeeevil Tea Party movement is growing. One of the report's major claims seems to be that Tea Partiers are racist because they oppose the wonderful progressive policies of Osama Obama.
In short -- and I'm not wasting my time by checking this shit line-by-line, since I need to be looking for a job -- it's the kind of hatchet-job the lefties revel in, with little (if anything) in the way of truth, but lots of whining about how blacks are oppressed.
This is a balloon: a thin skin wrapped around stale air. I'd like to believe the majority of people will have enough sense to see it for what it is and burst it.

Poll shows Corbett lead shrinking in Pennsylvania governor's race
A new poll shows Pennsylvania Democratic gubernatorial candidate Dan Onorato closing the gap between him and front-runner Tom Corbett.
The Muhlenberg College poll released today shows Republican Corbett holding a slight lead that has shrunken since two earlier surveys taken by the same pollster since mid-September.
In the latest poll, Corbett is backed by 47 percent of likely voters, Onorato is favored by 40 percent and 14 percent are undecided. The totals include voters who said they are leaning toward one candidate, but havenÂ’t totally made up their minds.
The telephone survey of 403 voters who said theyÂ’re likely to vote was conducted during the four days ending Tuesday. The sampling error margin is plus or minus 5 percentage points.

Here's the problem for O'Donnell:
It may be true that 'separtation of church and state' is not in the Constitution, and it is in fact not but...
.... it's not worth debating that. People *like* the concept.
What she means to say is that the 1st Amendment was never intended and does not itself prohibit free exercise of religion; but it DOES prohibit teh state restricting religious speech.
So just because the state does not have an official religion, that does not mean it has the right to keep people from speaking freely about religion, practicing religion, praying or ercting religious displays (one way of speaking freely about religion) on public property, grounds, facilities or schools.
Personally, to me, though she is technically right, the way she communicated it, was not good politics, not good electorally and a mistake.
Posted by: Sobieski at October 20, 2010 09:40 AM (4EVyh)
HEre is how AOLNews has it:
Later in the proceedings, after fielding questions on the candidates' views on repealing the 14th, 16th and 17th Amendments, Coons returned the conversation to the question of the constitutionally mandated separation of church and state.
"I absolutely oppose the widespread proposals by tea party candidates for us to repeal the 14th, 16th or 17th amendments." Coons said. "I also think you just heard, in the answers from my opponent, and in her attempt at saying 'where is the separation of church and state in the constitution' reveals her fundamental misunderstanding of what our Constitution is, how it is amended and how it evolved. The First Amendment establishes the separation, the fact that the federal government shall not establish any religion, and decisional law by the Supreme Court over many, many decades --"
O' Donnell then interrupted. "The First Amendment does?" she asked, skeptically.
Coons continued his explanation, and O'Donnell interrupted again. "So you're telling me that the separation of church and state is found in the First Amendment?"
Coons went on to cite cases the Supreme Court had decided that backed up the position of a wall between church and state.
"Let me just clarify," O'Donnell pressed. "You're telling me that the separation of church and state is found in the First Amendment?"
"The government shall make no establishment of religion," Coons said, summarizing the gist of the specific words in the First Amendment's establishment clause.
"That's in the First Amendment?" O'Donnell asked again, eliciting further laughter from the room
Again if you watch the video or listen to the audio, she is NOT responding his misquote, which is charitably cast as "summarizing the gist" but she actually has the words partly out of her mouth, she is interrupted, and repeats talking over Coons while he says what he says.
Yeah, they are liars. And everybody on the OMG can you believe what a ditz she is train is in league with them.

New England's Most Independent Congressman Jim Himes is calling in a last minute Hail Mary visit from, you guessed it, Barack Obama. This isn't about fund raising as there is no money in Bridgeport. You go to Stamford for that. Obama is coming on Oct. 30th to rally the base, ie. Blacks, in Bridgeport and get them out and voting for Himes. Without large margins in Connecticut's largest city the Democrat is a sure loser as they always lose the rest of the District. It won't help.
Hime is running against Dan Debicella, a great guy, really. This district has been listed as a Safe Dem forever and moved to Likely Dem. It's BS. Himes is going to lose.
How bad is it this year for Dems? Where will their firewall be? Inner cities, that's it. The only truly safe place for a Dem this year is the inner city. Everything outside the border of a city is in play.

Not what "that' means, what it is refering to. This why Ace wants to see the tapes, because the liers at the WaPo are doing the parsing to discredit COD. I believe Ace wants to figure out what and how exactly the WaPo is lieing about before he renders his final verdict that these people are scum now and forever.
By the way, what is wrong about a local school distrct deciding what their schools teach? Or is that too far away from the totalitarian project that's being set up by twisting the Constitution into always saying the opposite of what is written? Concern about maintaining centralized control by the ruling class through the federal apparatus is very important. Coons, who seemed surprised by the question, responded by quoting chapter and verse: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion.” To which O’Donnell, channeling Homer Simpson, asked, “That’s in the First Amendment?”

But no, the libs are not a bunch of desperate filthy scumbag liars.

She's doing more damage to the standard liberal line that somehow traditional conservative Christians and constitutionalists should never have anything to say against the Progressive lies that we've been fed for the past fifty years. The Commerce Clause, the Common Welfare clause, the penumbras that have eminated to make the clear language mean the opposite of what it means to be a Free People living in States that possess their own soverienty, all of this under a Constitution designed to define the limits of federal power, with all other powers belonging to the States and their people. I think because of this people are taking a closer look at the Constitution. Your concern concerns me. Who else do we want to throw overboard because the SoC MFM are not in their approval? DeMint? Wasting Syndrome
How much trash do hospitals produce?
[.....]
That's a number that should give the medical industry pause. After all, doctors have a particular reason to worry about climate change, which the World Health Organization has noted "will inevitably affect the basic requirements for maintaining health: clean air and water, sufficient food and adequate shelter." And air pollution from the health care sector's own electricity usage increases cases of asthma, respiratory illnesses, and emergency department visits to the tune of $600 million a year (PDF), according to a discussion draft paper published by the WHO and the organization Health Care Without Harm. To fulfill the Hippocratic Oath to "do no harm," hospitals need to keep the planet healthy along with their patients.

President Obama is giving Republicans a 10-day window to set the agenda for a lame-duck session and the new legislative year by leaving the country right after the midterm elections.
The timing of the presidentÂ’s trip to Asia is worrying some Democrats, who believe it could cede further momentum to a resurgent Republican Party that might win a House majority on Nov. 2.
“Unless we're planning to hold the lame duck in India, it makes zero sense to take a 10-day overseas trip right after what could be a disastrous midterm election,” said one Democratic strategist, speaking on background so as not to anger White House officials. “It will demoralize Democrats and needlessly cede message and momentum to Republicans.”

.... it's not worth debating that.

Apart from that, you may be right about the politics, but then again people might be waking up to the fact that when the ruling class lies to them about the Constitution about stuff they generally approve of, the ruling class will lie about stuff they don't. War on Potatoes Day 1
Personal Diary of PFC Dick Blumenthal
We approached Idaho from the Cache National Forest, using old highway 91 as a funnel point. As we marched into Smithfield we began constructing a hasty assembly area. The Sarge says that a volunteer group from San Francisco's 31st Irregulars are supposed to link up sometime within the next 48 hours. We'll see.
So far we have only met some minor resistance from scouts from the Frito Lay Rangers. Nothing hot n' heavy, but we lost Corporal Burns to salt poisoning, and Johansen had to be airlifted from carb overload. Bastards are using everything they got. We expect to assault Preston and Malad City within the week.
Got to go, Sarge says that I got guard duty tonight. I just hope some of the Pringle SpecOps guys tries to get into MY wire. I got my trusty K-Bar Samantha waiting for their soft throats.

In their world it is. In the real world, it isn't. Everyone they do know thinks it's in there. They are stunned to find out it isn't. Who knew?
What this tells me is that she is closer in the polls than we know.

ID should be taught alongside evolution as competing theory since it is based solely on scientific evidence. In fact, evolutionism should be taught in a philosophy or religion class. I don't see why the defenders of evolutionism are so afraid of open/honest debates using modern scientific evidences of complex biological systems and compared them to modern computer systems. Show students how creative evolution can create human from fish so that students can learn to apply that knowledge to the design of computer systems. Then you can teach students how ID is just a pseudo-science by pointing out that complex computer systems are intelligently designed by thousands of engineers. Then we can teach the students how computer designs have "evolved" over the years!

yes, that is true for the professional politicians but regular people don't have the professional politician gene, they tend to not realize they have to pretend to be one thing and then do another. They are basically honest and hard working and truth telling and that could get them in trouble in the last weeks of the election cycle but then again, Americans aren't stupid. My kids are in Delaware public schools, and I can't even get them taught cursive; they simply stopped teaching it. They are getting crap loads of scare lessons about global warming and pollution. I mean, you DO realize this is Delaware, right? Not Kentucky or Tennessee. How much time and energy are you willing to expend toward that endeavor? Bear in mind, Election Day's just a couple of weeks away.

Only because it seemed to lead to the rest of the silliness (and the article in question framed the issues as such). Period. This was the wrong time and wrong place to try to make distinction between what most people think and accept the Constitution says about religion and state and what the actual words are.

I await your progress reports with bated breath.

You really want to hide behind this asshole? Delaware was one of 28 states to increase the number of educators AS the school populations was falling. The largest county raised its taxes three times since the whiz kid Coons took over. That doesn't count the ancillary taxes (including sewer) that were raised. The most importnat issues HERE IN DELAWARE are the economy, jobs and government spending.
And you're here peddling angst over creationism. You're not even close to adressing what Delawareans are interested in. But it may prove useful to hide behind.

yes, that is true for the professional politicians but regular people don't have the professional politician gene, they tend to not realize they have to pretend to be one thing and then do another.
Posted by: curious at October 20, 2010 03:37 PM (p302b)
Come on, curious. COD has been in and around political circles for at least a decade. Hasn't she run for office several times before? Cripes she was talking politics on national TV as early 1999. I understand this is her first time as a candidate for the U.S. Senate. But don't pass her off as the average gal next door suddenly thrust into the spotlight. She's been seeking it for a long time. Which is OK.
And there is no way the criticism of her performance amounts to demanding that she must "pretend to be one thing and then do another." She knows she is being used by Obama and the media to paint the entire GOP field as extreme. She is far down in the polls. How about she not question the traditional notion of separation of church and state two weeks before the election? It's not too much to ask.

No, you're not. You're still playing this insipid game. We have elected consumate idiots; Biden immediately springs to mind. We'll probably elect another idiot that raises taxes instead of reining in spending and who misuses the little power he had running a county.
I can understand your angst
More crap. I don't care about creationism; you and the leftist Greek chorus have been flogging this. As I had noted before, the schools here won't teach unbiased science and dropped cursive writing entirely.

He's pissed they picked C'OD once, and he's pissed that she's still running.
Maybe next time they'll call you up for your advice first before making such errors like voting for the candidate they want.

Sure, you got hung up on a point that the media didn't even focus on! You are trying to make it easy for them. I can understand that you didn't get Castle. But ACES at least tried his best to "understand" it. They asked her a question about teaching evolution. So she answered it! Your point is that she should have lied about it at least a little bit to get past the election. That 's OK as a tactical advice. The silliness is that you guys seem to be so eager to play along with the media. Looks like you have a prejudice against her already. As a tactic, I would have turned that around to show how Coons and the libs have such little regard for the constitution because of their big gov governing philosophy. Not you specially per se, but the talking heads with a megaphone.
You don't care about creationism. That 's fine with me. I just happy that we can agree on the fiscal issues. But I see all this crap and ignorance about evolutionism. So just try to set the premise straight. I think all this silly and ignorant attack on "religion" doesn't help anybody.

Meanwhile, I agree that the OÂ’Donnell focus is a deliberate distraction. But I also think itÂ’s important to use this opportunity — like the Sarah Palin “1773″ brouhaha — to point out that the credentialed gentry class isnÂ’t nearly as smart, and certainly isnÂ’t as well-educated, as it thinks it is. Because, you know, it isnÂ’t.

224 I understand this is her first time as a candidate for the U.S. Senate.
No it is her 3rd attempt at winning the DE US Senate seat. 2006 and 2008 were the previous tries.
227 I don't care about creationism; you and the leftist Greek chorus have been flogging this. - you don't care, but hear the debate exchange through the prism of moderate, independent, and Jewish voters in New Castle county. It's like a dog whistle to them, they're now convinced she's going to Christianize them. When I heard Christine first going down the evolution rabbit hole, I mentally pleaded with her not to go there. It's not the hill she should choose to die on, fiscal conservatism is where she should have focussed. God knows there is enough to go after her opponent on that front.
231 Your point is that she should have lied about it at least a little bit to get past the election. That 's OK as a tactical advice. Not lied, but finessed. This was a tactical error on her part, she went to a place that helped her in the primary, forgetting she is now in the general. Mike Castle did the opposite during the primary: he ignored the conservatives, and played to the general election voters.
Now I do believe she can win in November, and maybe due to a totally unforeseen and probably off-the-wall reason. Suppose that African-Americans in Delaware can't bring themselves to pull the lever for a candidate named Coons? Really - Christine might win because of a condition that's 100% out of anyone's control.

I am fined with your analysis. I do question the judgement to dwell on this at the expense of using this opportunity to put the libs on the defensive. Instead of caterwauling/harping on CO, we should play smart as Instapundit did. I know we are not running for the Senate, but a little tactical smart here also helps.

235 Like the voters?
That's an interesting question. If a candidate believes that voters are 100% out of their control, why would they spend so much time and money attempting to influence said citizens? The voters' hearts and minds are not necessarily out of a candidate's "control", but something as innocuous as a candidate's name is. For example, Christine was able to use her primary opponent's name to great advantage as a rallying cry: STORM THE CASTLE!
It is unfortunate that she will not be able to use the same rally cry with her current adversary: Storm the Coons! would be political suicide.

What has the Delaware GOP done wrt Coons? What has the national GOP done? I know it is her campaign to run, but are they that petty to attack Coons? What is so special about him and his Marxism? He has quite a few things to answer for. Given all the attention the right side has put on CO, I would expect at least as much on Coons.

As you can see from Ace's public struggle to come up with a definitive conclusion on the matter, unlike Palin's reference to 1773, the gist of O'Donnell's words is very much open to interpretation. Consequently, you can't paint her detractors as being flat-out wrong by an objective standard. So, you don't gain any advantage. You just end up arguing about what she meant when she said what she said.
Secondly, this all assumes that lining up to defend O'Donnell will benefit the cause of conservatism in the long run. That might be true, but I don't happen to believe it is. So, I just can't seem to muster the gumption to rally to the defense of candidate I don't really believe in -- a candidate whose supporters have never passed up an opportunity to question the loyalty and worth of any conservative who deigned to voice skepticism about her candidacy, preferring instead to tar them as elitists and RINOs.
Of course, Levin, Limbaugh, et. al., will swear up and down that the supposed "RINOs" wouldn't support her because they're embarrassed by her conservatism. That'll be a nice little bit of salve for those convinced that their purity ensures their moral superiority, but it won't explain why I can find it within myself to support Rand Paul after having supported his opponent in the primary.
No, I think the best think for conservatism right now is for folks like Levin to see if they can win an election without the help of all those dastardly RINOs he was so happy to alienate in the primary. If he can manage to pull it off, more power to him. But, if he can't, maybe next time he won't be so quick to crap all over good, solid, lifelong conservatives who happen to have different ideas as to how to go about advancing the cause.

Thank you. You simply don't want her to win. If Castle is that important to you, then it is your choice. I would rather have the attitude of the libertarian Instapundit.

I know that you didn't bother to follow the link I provided at Instapundit. He linked to Patterco, who was no fan of CO. He brought up the point about teaching creationism. But he didn't dwell on it. Today he did a yeomen job on the Wash Post 's dishonesty. The libs wanted a distraction wrt Palin and CO. In both cases, they have been caught red-handed. We should put them on the rope as a tactical matter. Since we have been talking about tactical error here. My hat to Patterco for not swallowing in pettiness here. I perfectly understand Patterco and Ace 's rationale for supporting Castle. I don't have any problem with that. I was warming up to Ace 's argument, but after a closer at Castle, I don't think he 's worth it. That 's all. The primary was over. We tried to drag McCain over the finish line, but we couldn't. Honestly, I didn't believe in McCain at all except for national security.

Patterico has a different set of concerns from mine. He has a readership to consider, and doesn't really have the luxury of time to dwell on this sort of thing. So, I fully understand why he doesn't feel any inclination to plant his flag on this matter, despite having ample justification.
But, for me, this is a matter of a couple of different principles that have become intertwined. The first principle is a matter of rewarding rewarding people who question your loyalty by offering them the very loyalty that they (rather publicly) called into question -- not to mention mental fitness and personal integrity.
In my mind, to do that sends a message to other would-be bullies that they can do the same thing and expect similar results. And that, of course, encourages more of the same treatment.
Some, actually most, people feel that now isn't the time to deal with that; that there are more important considerations to deal with. I happen to think that this is the time to do it. Because, if there isn't a consequence to that kind of treatment of fellow conservatives this time around, you can expect it again next time around. Only the stakes will be much higher then.
Also, there's the matter of the best way to advance conservatism. As I see it, it's not in the interest of the cause to encourage behavior that could end up giving the left another four years in the White House.
I may be the only person on the planet who sees it that way. Fine. As I said, I don't begrudge anyone for doing what they feel is in the best interest of the conservative movement. I just happen to see it differently.
It all boils down to this: If high profile conservatives are willing to slime and demean people who are in the trenches every day, doing the best they can to advance the cause, over someone they were scarcely aware of two months before -- well, they ought to get used to the idea of winning elections without the guys in the trenches.
